R O TA R Y NEWS Rotary’s Motto“Service above Self”
and today can claim by its efforts to have eradicated polio in the world with only Pakistan and Afghanistan remaining with victims of the disease. As Rotary grew, its focus became more orientated to community service and the motto of “Service above Self” became its mantra with the Four Way Test of the things we think, say and do: 1. Is it the truth? 2. Is it fair to all concerned ? 3. Will it build goodwill and better friendships? 4. Will it be beneficial to all concerned ?
When I ask strangers or friends if they are familiar with Rotary, they have often heard of it, but are not sure what exactly the organization is about or what Rotarians do. It is not a cult or religious organization, but actually was the world’s first service club founded by an American attorney, Paul Harris in Chicago and formed in 1905. It was originally intended to be a an organization for professionals of diverse backgrounds to exchange ideas, form meaningful, lifelong friendships with the intention of giving back to their communities. Rotary’s name came from the group’s early practice of rotating meetings among the offices of its members. Little did the founding fathers of Rotary realize that it would become an organization of men and women today with 1.2 million members to over 32,000 Rotary Clubs in more than 200 countries and geographical areas. Whenever I travel to another country, I can usually find a Rotary Club with an open invitation and warm welcome to join their meeting. I have been to meetings all over the world from Beverly Hills, California to Nairobi, Kenya. Almost every city in the world has a Rotary Club and maybe two or three in one city. The 114 years of Rotary with the formation of the Rotary Foundation in 1917, has been one of historical impact in the world with members such as Thomas Edison, Charles Lindbergh, Sir Winston Churchill, Albert Schweitzer, Franklin D. Roosevelt, Buzz Aldrin, John F. Kennedy, right up to the present with Bill and Melinda Gates working with eradicating polio in the world hand in hand with Rotary’s Polio Plus Program. This Rotary program started in 1987
For example, prior to World War II in 1933, Rotary sent 3 delegates to meet Nazi officials to mediate a peace agreement, which was unfortunately rejected. Thereafter many clubs in Europe were forced to disband after the onset of the war. Other clubs stepped up their service efforts to provide emergency relief to victims of the war. In 1942, looking ahead to the postwar era, Rotarians called for a conference to promote international educational and cultural exchanges. This event inspired the founding of UNESCO, which even today Rotary has joint projects and participation.
Rotarians in the past assisted with the charter of the League of Nations under the Presidency of Woodrow Wilson in 1921 and that vision did not live on, it was in 1945 that 11 Rotarians set up agendas and served as official delegates for the formation of the United Nations. Thus Rotary has been actively participating since then with UN Environmental Program (UNEP), World Food Program (WFP), World Bank (WB), World Health Organization (WHO) and thousands of Nongovernmental Organizations (NGOs) throughout the world. For more than 110 years, Rotarians have joined together from all continents, cultures, and industries to take action in our communities and around the world. With a commitment to achieving lasting change, we work together to empower youth, enhance health, promote peace, and most important, advance the community. While Rotarians can serve in countless ways, Rotary has focused its efforts in six areas, which reflect some of the most critical and widespread humanitarian needs: Peace and conflict prevention/resolution, disease prevention treatment, clean water and sanitation, maternal and child health, basic education and literacy, economic and community development. With likeminded membership dedicated to their motto“Service Above Self”, Rotarian members work together as friends to serve the community. In Bali alone, among the 13 active clubs, thousands of local communities have benefited from the projects of service rendered by Rotary. By Past President Anita Lococo Rotary Club of Bali Seminyak

Ubud News JAZZY SNAZZY EARLY BIRD First up, get moving quickly for your Early Bird pass to this year’s Ubud Village Jazz Festival. Lock in the dates - Friday and Saturday, August 16 - 17 and dust off your dancing shoes! We’ll have more info on this year’s line up of world class Indonesian and international jazzsters in future Ubud News columns. For now, go to Ubudvillagejazzfestival.com to whet your appetite and book those early bird tickets! DON’T BE A DODGY DRIVER! Next, drive safely people, please! For everyone, driving conditions in Bali are different from a few years ago - either as a guest or relatively new resident in a different country with different rules and customary behaviours, or as a local navigating around the hugely increased traffic on Bali roads. And for nondriving Balinese residents who live in the little villages around Ubud, it’s all a bit nightmarish! When I first came to Ubud in 1990, “my” street - Jalan Tirta Tawar - was a little dirt lane, with two tiny villages on the way to my home in Junjungan. People sat and had a chat on the side of the road - sometimes literally on the road - and they put out great sheets of tarpaulin to dry their rice. For many of them - and, wake up, it’s THEIR home we’ve made major thoroughfares where those safe, quiet paths past their front doors used to be. International toad traffic standards tell you to stay one vehicle length behind the person in front of you, for every 10km/ hour you are travelling. If that seems impossible in Ubud traffic, SLOW DOWN and keep your eyes tracking everywhere! And if your path to your destination is challenged by other drivers, do us all a favour and - courteously - ask them or their organisations to drive safely too. Traffic is busier every month it seems; it’s up to road users to help keep it safe for everyone. AKASHA COMMUNITY NIGHTS

PARADISE... IN SICKNESS & IN HEALTH PTSD - Post Traumatic Stress Disorder The recent events in New Zealand, I am sure, have brought memories flooding back to many who have been involved in similar mass casualty events. The ongoing damage to those who are exposed to this kind of trauma, either as part of their work commitment, or as someone that has been thrown into an unfortunate circumstance by fate, is often unseen, but the effects no less devastating. I recently spoke to an old friend who I remember as being such a wonderfully positive and happy person. She was the smile on a cloudy day, the life of the party. That was until she became a 911 operator, and after 5 years of service found herself thrown into the depths of PTSD to the point that she could not function…let alone smile.
exposure therapy. Exposure therapy. This behavioral therapy helps you safely face both situations and memories that you find frightening so that you can learn to cope with them effectively. Exposure therapy can be particularly helpful for flashbacks and nightmares. One approach uses virtual reality programs that allow you to re-enter the setting in which you experienced trauma. Eye movement desensitization and reprocessing (EMDR).EMDR combines exposure therapy with a series of guided eye movements that help you process traumatic memories and change how you react to them. You may try individual therapy, group therapy or both. Group therapy can offer a way to connect with others going through similar experiences.
Diagnosis of PTSD requires exposure to an event that involved the actual or possible threat of death, violence or serious injury. Your exposure can happen in one or more of these ways: • You directly experienced the traumatic event • You witnessed, in person, the traumatic event occurring to others • You learned someone close to you experienced or was threatened by the traumatic event • You are repeatedly exposed to graphic details of traumatic events (for example, if you are a first responder to the scene of traumatic events) You may have PTSD if the problems you experience after this exposure continue for more than a month and cause significant problems in your ability to function in social and work settings and negatively impact relationships. TREATMENT
MEDICATIONS
Post-traumatic stress disorder treatment can help you regain a sense of control over your life. The primary treatment is psychotherapy, but can also include medication.
Several types of medications can help improve symptoms of PTSD: Antidepressants. These medications can help symptoms of depression and anxiety. They can also help improve sleep problems and concentration. Anti-anxiety medications. These drugs can relieve severe anxiety and related problems. You and your doctor can work together to figure out the best medication, with the fewest side effects, for your symptoms and situation.
Combining these treatments can help improve your symptoms by: • Teaching you skills to address your symptoms • Helping you think better about yourself, others and the world • Learning ways to cope if any symptoms arise again • Treating other problems often related to traumatic experiences, such as depression, anxiety, or misuse of alcohol or drugs You don’t have to try to handle the burden of PTSD on your own. PSYCHOTHERAPY Several types of psychotherapy, also called talk therapy, may be used to treat children and adults with PTSD. Cognitive therapy. This type of talk therapy helps you recognize the ways of thinking (cognitive patterns) that are keeping you stuck - for example, negative beliefs about yourself and the risk of traumatic things happening again. For PTSD, cognitive therapy often is used along with
COPING & SUPPORT If stress and other problems caused by a traumatic event affect your life, see your doctor or mental health professional. You can also take these actions as you continue with treatment for post-traumatic stress disorder: Follow your treatment plan. Although it may take a while to feel benefits from therapy or medications, treatment can be effective, and most people do recover. Remind yourself that it takes time. Learn about PTSD. This knowledge can help you understand what you’re feeling, and then you can develop coping strategies to help you respond effectively. Take care of yourself. Get enough rest, eat a healthy diet, exercise and take time to relax. Try to reduce or avoid caffeine and nicotine, which can worsen anxiety.
C/He/I-13 Feb 19
Don’t self-medicate. Turning to alcohol or drugs to numb your feelings isn’t healthy, even though it may be a tempting way to cope. It can lead to more problems down the road, interfere with effective treatments and prevent real healing. Break the cycle. When you feel anxious, take a brisk walk or jump into a hobby to re-focus. Stay connected. Spend time with supportive and caring people - family, friends, faith leaders or others. Consider a support group. Ask your mental health professional for help finding a support group, or contact veterans’ organizations or your community’s social services system. WHEN SOMEONE YOU LOVE HAS PTSD The person you love may seem like a different person than you knew before the trauma - angry and irritable, for example, or withdrawn and depressed. PTSD can significantly strain the emotional and mental health of loved ones and friends. Remember that you can’t change someone. However, you can: Learn about PTSD. This can help you understand what your loved one is going through. Recognize that avoidance and withdrawal are part of the disorder. If your loved one resists your help, allow space and let your loved one know that you’re available when he or she is ready to accept your help. Offer to attend medical appointments. If your loved one is willing, attending appointments can help you understand and assist with treatment. Be willing to listen. Let your loved one know you’re willing to listen, but you understand if he or she doesn’t want to talk. Try not to force your loved one to talk about the trauma until he or she is ready. Encourage participation. Plan opportunities for activities with family and friends. Celebrate good events. Make your own health a priority. Take care of yourself by eating healthy, being physically active and getting enough rest. Take time alone or with friends, doing activities that help you recharge. Seek help if you need it. If you have difficulty coping, talk with your doctor. He or she may refer you to a therapist who can help you work through your stress. Stay safe. Plan a safe place for yourself and your children if your loved one becomes violent or abusive. There are now some excellent private mental health services on the Island which I would be happy to share with you via email - balikim2000@gmail.com.

BOOMER CORNER
When you need Palliative and Hospice Care in Bali As we grow older and enter into our twilight years we will be faced, perhaps inevitably, with the spectre of palliative, hospice or home based health care. If we are lucky enough to live to a ripe old age without major health concerns, all we need is home care and that is relatively straightforward and fairly uncomplicated. It suffices to have a trusted, responsible and capable caregiver to help us with mobility issues, bathing, food preparation and the various tasks we have difficulty performing. And lucky you, in Bali, this type of care is still very affordable. Combined with regular medical checkups or home visits by a health care team, you can thank your lucky stars you don’t need more focused attention. It’s a totally different matter if you suffer a medical condition that needs constant attention and professional intervention. Then you need palliative care and your options are either daily at-home visiting nurses if your condition is manageable by that or institutionalised treatment. Just to be clear on the difference between palliative care and hospice care: palliative care is targeted medical treatment if you have a diagnosed serious condition that can be treated though not necessarily healed. Hospice care takes over when treatment is no longer effective and is stopped as it is determined that the patient is not going to survive the illness. Hospice care is mainly about pain management and making your last moments as comfortable as possible. Bali does have these services but not in the ways of our western world. As previous Boomer Corner articles have pointed out, at this time there is only one full-fledged private medical assistance facility in Bali that provides palliative and hospice care and that is SadaJiwa in Sembung village, Mengwi. A few of the area’s hospitals provide palliative care but the services are limited. Sanglah Hospital has a Palliative Care Unit and Home Care services but no inpatient hospice care. Prima Medika only provides palliative care for oncology patients. Home nursing care services exist but if you google the providers you will find out there is not an abundance of them. Regardless of all the talk and hoopla by the Ministry of Tourism about making Bali the Mecca of retirees by promoting senior living programmes, very little actually exists in the matter of providing services and infrastructure when those retirees, after a number of healthy and active years, become dependent upon medical care and assistance. Real estate developers who promote the so-called retirement villages that are sprouting like mushrooms after a big rain just offer blocks of villas or apartments designed for the still active and healthy retired set. There are no medical clinics or nursing services on the premises.
of visiting or resident expats. A mobile team consisting of a doctor and a nurse visit patients at participating hotels, resorts and private villas to perform checkups, monitor vital signs, consult on dietary needs and personalised exercise routines. At this time several hotels in Ubud, Bedugul and some beach areas are part of the project which is expanding at a rapid pace and is also being promoted to the existing traditional tourist villages (Desa Wisata) that are dotted all around Bali. Obviously this concept would be ideal for the retirement villages and communities, especially in the more remote areas or places where medical attention is not around the corner. This home care programme is also available upon individual request on a daily, weekly or occasional schedule. More information can be requested from Dr. Patra by calling 0812 3951 364 or email gede_patra@yahoo.com. Another exciting development is the acquisition of a remote telemedicine diagnostic system which allows real-time clinical analysis and performs up to 11 different medical and diagnostic tests like measuring body temperature, height and weight, blood pressure check, blood tests, urinalysis, oxygenation, electrocardiogram, heart monitoring, etc. The system is essentially a sophisticated portable machine - operated by a nurse or clinical assistant - that can be deployed at remote locations, even in the privacy of your own home. The results of the tests are sent online to a remote physician for diagnosis and a treatment plan can be developed if necessary. This is ideally suited to serve patients in offsite or remote areas and should be available soon as Dr. Patra is already in the testing phase of the project. Plan and Check - It is obvious that geriatric care in Bali is still wobbling in infant shoes. It is not a glamorous or popular specialisation and there are only 5 geriatric specialists in Bali at this time. Coupled to the scarcity of adequate care facilities for older and sick people, this picture is not very encouraging for expats with serious chronic and end-of-life conditions. So it behoves us doubly to plan and prepare for this eventuality, especially since health insurance plans do not always cover palliative, hospice or home health care. Best check your policy now. If you are a veteran, check those benefits too. Let’s hope geriatric care will get better in time and we can all enjoy Bali to the very end of our lives. Resident Care - SadaJiwa’s founder and director is Dr. Gede Patra - who is also the president of the Bali Hospital Association - and he kindly explained that SadaJiwa currently has 2 resident programmes. One is a plan for healthy people who do not need medical treatment other than occasional checks and vital sign monitoring. The other plan is for people requiring focused medical care. SadaJiwa looks like a model retirement village with attractive villas set in lush gardens and a quiet environment but it has an onsite medical clinic staffed by doctors, nurses and therapists, therapeutic facilities, an ambulance and links to BROS hospital in Denpasar. It is home to a number of Indonesian and expat patients with medical conditions such as Alzheimer’s, cancer, stroke and cardiac disease who are undergoing treatment and are cared for by attentive staff and nurses. Some of the nurses have been trained abroad in palliative and hospice care. SadaJiwa’s programme is holistic in that it incorporates care for the physical, social, mental and spiritual needs of the members of its community. Whatever your creed, belief system or level of physical and mental condition, the mission of SadaJiwa is to provide an environment conducive to retaining the quality of life for older or ailing people. Check it out at www.sadajiwabali.com. Home-based Care - Dr. Patra is fully aware of the dilemmas faced by the aging expat population in Bali and he has devised another programme to cater to the medical needs

One & a Half Cheers for EAT-Lancet... We are Saved! Maybe so, but Watch out for the Usual Suspects Last month an extraordinary road show hit 35 major cities around the world promising to save the planet. The EATLancet Commision had come to town – big time. The roll-out of the EAT-Lancet diet comprises some 40 prominent scientists presided over by a beautiful 40-year old founder, a physician herself, name of Gunhild Stordalen, a longstanding environmental activist, married to billionaire Norwegian hotelier and property developer, Petter Stordalen.
More sober critics do wonder at the carbon footprint of all this and, more to the point, flying nearly 40 scientist plus spouses to slap-up bashes in 35 big cities around the world. You would have thought perhaps these ecologically-minded scientists might also have given a thought to this. Point is, if they can achieve even a fraction of what what’s intended, who give’s a witch’s whatnot if the Stordalens enjoy the celeb life?
The “EAT-Lancet Commision on healthy diets from sustainable food systems” is a remarkable initiative 3-years in the making involving the EAT Foundation, leading medical publication “The Lancet”, and the Welcome Trust, with active co-operation from the World Economic Forum at Davos and over 40 of its member corporations, as well as UN endorsement.
In other words, we won’t starve, we will all be healthier, global warming will be solved, the rain forest and habitat are restored, we don’t kill off most of our our fellow mammals, and we get to clean up the air and the oceans too.
How should we now trust the organisations and people, who have never failed to put their own interests first? Especially now that the profits to be made are so astronomical and the law itself is to be required to compel or favour use of their goods and services?
We can have all this – just so long we eat a lot less meat, reduce dairy, while getting the bulk of our protein from plant sources.
Well, yes and no... Predictably the tabloids, climate-deniers, Trumpists, in fact all those Hilary was foolish enough to have described publicly as “deplorables” are having a field day. A goodlooking blonde 40 year old Scandinavian MD, wealthy and married to a billionaire and who did a few modelling gigs at university, and who espouses green causes? That’s catnip in all the best deplorable circles. “Hypocrite!”, they shreik on line. “Billionaire ex-model wants to tax your hamburger!”, they chorus. Dr. Gunhild does enjoy her wealth and might have avoided some of this stuff had she not put pictures of herself and her husband Petter on social media, jetting around the world in their US$26m Bombardier private jet, sunbathing in Mexico, relaxing in Greece, hugging a tree in Costa Rica, meditating in Antibes, posing by a pool in St. Tropez and then lecturing people about eating meat against a Manhattan skyline. Clearly publicity isn’t a problem for the couple, given that they flew in over 230 people back in 2010 for their marriage in Morocco and a 3-day party with the ceremony performed by Sir Bob Geldof, no less. Less well known is that Dr Gunhild suffers from systemic scleroderma, which is incurable and often fatal. For all we know, she may be a lady in a hurry, wanting to achieve her lifework and enjoy life to the full in the time left to her. For all we know, the couple may have more than offset their carbon footprint. We cannot say, we don’t know.
Third: The scientists who put together the EAT-Lancet are all proponents of the various parts of the diet. Nothing necessarily wrong with that, unless they are paid consultants to the corporations which stand to benefit massively from the program, and quite a few of them are compromised in that way (for full report visit online: Would you Eat-Lancet? Optimum Nutrition). This is the big question mark hanging over it all. Of the 40 or so companies involved, the majority of them, some of the biggest corporations in the world, have criminal convictions, mainly for price fixing, rigging or ignoring research, as well as bribery and corruption. They make their money out of palm oil, sugar, genetically modified crops, processed foods, mass animal husbandry, chemical insecticides and fertilisers. They each maintain massive political lobbying machines, make large political donations and are virtually unaccountable.
The EAT-Lancet diet we are being told, gives us the strategy to feed the 10 billion of us that will crowd the Earth by 2050 with a healthy diet that reduces greenhouse gas emissions, saves half the planet for nature, halves food waste and achieves all the UN’s Sustainable Development Goals.
Hallelujah! At long last... the politicians and the Big Business are listening to us and they’re going to do something.... We know Big Ag, Big Pharma, Big Food et al. are the problem. Finally, even they are seeing sense. If not vegan or vegetarian, any fool can see that eating less meat is going to do a lot to clean up the mess we’re in. Right?
Second: for the diet to be widely adopted and in time to make a difference the EAT-Lancet Commissioners call for state action through taxation and regulation to encourage us to adopt the diet. That is a big worry (see below).
Here they are by industrial sector [* incicates criminal and/or civil conviction(s)]:
For the first time we actually have a co-ordinated stategy that is a serious attempt to address all the planet’s ecological problems, which we humans created. Given EAT-Lancet has the active support of some of the largest coporations in the world as well as the major international organisations there is a chance it could work. The question is, will it? Broadly speaking the scientific consensus is – yes, it could. Such a program, tweaked a bit, can reduce GHG emissions to currently acceptable levels, and satisfy the rest of the program, but we have to act fast before we reach the global warming tipping point. But hang on, haven’t we been here before, with the Green Revolution of the 1960s and 70s? Wasn’t that when Big Ag got farmers in South America, India and Southeat Asia to adopt hybrid seeds, artificial fertilisers and chemical sprays? Aren’t we now experiencing terrible droughts, struggling to make good on massive land degradation, loss of biodiversity and bankrupted farmers - all caused by the industrialised agriculture we call the Green Revolution? Right now informed criticism of the EAT-Lancet program comes in three main areas. First: the diet is not quite as healthy as claimed. Protein from plant is nowhere near as efficient as protein from animal sources. Certain important nutrients would be signicantly lacking from the proposed EAT-Lancet diet. Most notably retinol, Vitamins B12, D and K2 along with minerals sodium, calcium, potassium and iron. Such a diet would be bad for diabetics. The over-reliance on carbs and plant-based oils with the exception of olive oil is dangerous (visit online Dr. Zoe Harcombe, EAT-Lancet diet).

What it does mean is that the utmost rigour must be consistently applied to ensure that these corporate titans are kept honest. It means, that if they transgress their CEOs and their chairmen must face jail time, they face fines so large that total redress can be made and their shareholders suffer significant financial pain so as to demand compliance with the law. Anything less, and it will not go well for us.

Bali’s Late Night Feasts Hungry after a night of partying or just feeling peckish while binge watching your favorite TV show? Luckily, McDonald’s and KFC are no longer your only options. Bali is booming and so are its options for a midnight snack, or feast. Here are just a few of the island’s late night eats. Warung Laota - http://warunglaota.id Serving delicious Hong Kong-style porridge in three locations—Jimbaran, Tuban and Kuta—Wrung Laota is the brainchild of Mr. Laota, a fisherman who decided to change career paths after his boat met with misfortune off the coast of Bali. While the eatery’s specialty is porridge—select from toppings such as beef, chicken, fish, squid and crab—it also serves a huge variety of other dishes. Some of the standout options from the extensive menu include steamed crab with Chinese arak; deep fried gurami with tofu and fermented black bean; and roasted duck Hong Kong style. There is also a selection of steamed and fried dumplings, siomay and buns. Those feeling particularly brave, or drunk, may wish to try Warung Laota’s porridge with frog (live). Consider yourself warned. Opening Hours: Warung Laota Sunset Road: Daily from 8 am to 12 am Warung Laota Tuban: Daily 24 hours Warung Laota Jimbaran: Daily from 8 am to 11:30 pm Chandi Bali - http://chandibali.com Open from 12 pm to 12 am, Chandi Bali in Seminyak delivers a “gastronomic twist on Asian cuisine” bound to satisfy your midnight craving. The restaurant, which specializes in modern Indonesian and Asian cuisine, serves dishes made from organically-grown fruit, vegetables, spices and roots, as well as imported New Zealand and Australian meat. Chandi caters to even the fussiest of the island’s gourmands, so if you are vegetarian, vegan or gluten free, the venue has you covered (it even has paleo and pescatarian options). The evolving menu features dishes such as caramelized butterfish miso dashi, pan seared ginger and soy giant prawns, and spicy purple eggplant curry with coconut rice. Alternatively, opt for the set seasonal or vegetarian menu (might not be the best idea in the middle of the night). The venue also features an eight-meter bar for a pre- or postmeal tipple.
Opening Hours: Daily from 12 pm to 12 am BO$$ MAN - http://www.bossmanbali.com
With a new Kuta location that stays open until 4 am, this Seminyak establishment (which incidentally also stays open until 4 am) has been dishing out quality grub since first opening its doors in 2015. The fast food joint serves six worldclass burgers, most of which come with either a 60-day dryaged chuck steak or pork that has been slow cooked for over 18 hours. Opt for the Al Capone with an 160-gram beef patty, bacon, grilled onion, smoked cheddar, creole chutney, aioli and house-smoke barbecue sauce, or go veggie with the Gandhi with an edamame, quinoa and sunflower seed patty, baby spinach, creole chutney, cucumber and dill tzatziki. BO$$ Man also serves sides, but when ordering keep in mind that the restaurant’s hearty burger portions are a meal in their own right. Opening Hours: Seminyak: Daily from 11 am to 4 am Kuta: Daily from 12 pm to 4 am Luigis Hot Pizza Bali - http://luigishotpizza.com Masterminded by the crew behind Da Maria, Luigis is a laid back outdoor joint in the heart of Canggu. Those who like a story with their pizza will be pleased to know that their late night dinner has been prepared in an oven brought to the island directly from Naples—two ticks for quality and authenticity. In terms of toppings, try the spicy beef meatball,
mozzarella, parmesan, tomato, parsley and onion pizza, or go for the good old mozzarella, salami, chili and onion option. Luigis also serves vegetarian dishes and pizza by the meter with up to four toppings. This venue is not just about Italian fare, however. Luigis is well-known for its cocktails and happy hour. Some of the pours on the menu include elder gin tea with gin, elderflower, pomelo and tonic, and Sicilian margarita with tequila, aperitivo and lime blood orange. Opening Hours: Daily from 5 pm to 12 am Mad Ronin - https://www.facebook.com/pg/madronin.bali Mad Ronin in Kerobokan is a cozy Japanese restaurant that recommends you to “strip bare from the pretentious fine dining bullshit” and get lost in the world of ramen and craft beer. Blending traditional and modern elements, the venue invites you to make yourself at home amid the Japanesestyle murals and custom skateboards that line the wall of the open kitchen. In terms of fare, try the tonkotsu ramen, the big daddy of all ramen made with pork bones boiled for 8 hours, hakata noodles, yakibuta and egg, or the tori momo ramen with chicken broth, shoyu, hakata noodles, chicken thigh, nori and egg. Not into ramen? Opt for the tori katsu curry with breaded chicken or the tempura don with shrimp, shitake, okra and egg. If you are still in the mood for a drink grab a sweet stout from the Hitachino Nest Brewery. Alternatively, walk to the back of the restaurant and up the stairs to enter the world of 40 Thieves, a prohibition era-style speakeasy that specializes in quality cocktails. Opening Hours: Monday to Saturday from 6 pm to 2 am

GARDEN DOCTOR Chlorophyll in Plants and Diet - The benefits of Parsley and Anything Green Hi I’ve been reading about the health benefits associated with the celery juice craze, it’s been everywhere lately in the news, problem is most places in Bali only offer fresh fruit juices. Celery is one of the more expensive greens to buy, I was wondering if it is feasible to grow my own or are there any other alternative vegetables to grow and juice for maximum health benefit? Regards Nicki. As the years roll on, so to do the superfood fads. People claiming to discover things which have always existed. I say, beware of the ‘Instafad’ and those who peddle them. Last year it was kale and goji before that. So, now this year it’s celery! If I was running the show next year it’ll be parsley but unfortunately for Instagram I’m not signed up - more likely fortunately if the truth be known!
Haven’t you noticed that celery stalks in the store are a pale shade of green, transitioning to white at the base? That’s not how it looks in my garden and that is the heart of my gripe with the celery food faddists. Real home-grown celery is a chlorophyll filled deeper green - better said ‘chlorofilled’ perhaps!
cells. It has been shown to stop the division of breast cancer cells and kills existing ones. It can also kill existing colon cancer cells.
A green juice should have chlorophyll levels at a premium, yet your average store-bought celery is deficient somewhat. For health it’s much better to be juicing some parsley which is especially high in chlorophyll, and also extremely bitter - but hey, no pain no gain! But you can always just throw a few sprigs in with a watermelon juice, you’ll barely taste it, but the benefits will be there as parsley is extremely nutrient dense - a tiny amount goes a long way.
According to the Oregon State University, some of the most chlorophyll dense raw vegetables are (mg per cup): • Parsley - 38 • Spinach - 23.7 • Cress - 15.6 • Green beans - 8.3 • Arugula (rocket) - 8.2 • Leeks - 7.7 Parsley tops the list - so let’s talk about its apigenin content while we’re here! Preclinical research shows that apigenin which is found in parsley, retards mesothelioma cancer cell development. Natural compounds are often shown to interrupt cancer cells and their spread. Over 50% of chemotherapy drugs come directly from plant sources or were developed in the lab by synthesizing a plant compound into a drug. Dried parsley, with 13,000 mg of apigenin per 100 grams is one of the most abundant natural sources. Fresh parsley is abundant also, with 225 to 300 mg per 100 grams.
But despite that, one thing is for sure - I’m not trying to sell you anything, get likes or increase my subscribers, so read on without suspicion. Now while I’m all for people growing their own fruit and vegetables, just beware of the fads and fashionable foods! A healthy balanced diet is the most important thing. I find it amusing that the celery juice junkies are usually the same people posing on their Instagram feed next week, espresso martini in hand as the sun sinks low from their daybed vantage point - which could be anywhere on Bali’s west coast. But then again, what would I know…I’m not on Instagram right? But geez I love to have the occasional rant. Look, the truth is, any green vegetable juice will no doubt have health benefits, it’s just that I take issue with the misinformation of the celery nuts. Yes, celery juice is good for you - much better than a coke, beer or cocktail. But it will always be so much better if you grow your own. A lot of these people talk the talk, but do they walk the walk? Where do they get their celery from, and why is that important? Well, chlorophyll is the key and I’ll explain why it matters for celery, in particular. Chlorophyll is the green pigment that gives plants their colour and is an extremely beneficial nutrient to humans. To simplify, chlorophyll converts solar energy into plant sugars through photosynthesis - without which human life on earth would not be possible! The benefits or green juice come not only from the vitamins and minerals - but the chlorophyll content also is key. Regarding celery, most people are not aware that store bought celery is a heavily sprayed crop, so enjoy those chemicals with your juice! Another biggie people don’t realise is that commercially grown celery is ‘blanched’ in the fields a few weeks before harvest whether it’s organic or not. The term ‘blanched’ in this respect refers to the mounding up of soil around the stalks or other methods of light deprivation so that only the tops remain exposed in the final weeks of growth. Why is this done? Well, ‘blanching’ celery makes it sweeter, reducing bitterness, whilst also rendering it less stringy and more tender to the bite - but who cares if you pulverise it into juice anyway? But what I really need to mention is that the undesirable side effects of ‘blanching’ are reduced nutrients and a lowered chlorophyll content!
If you’re a sceptic, do some of your own research to uncover the facts.
To get a 10 mg dose as used in the clinical trial by Prof. Harald Hoensch of the University of Frankfurt, you would only need one tablespoon of raw chopped parsley per day, otherwise sprinkle a little dried parsley onto your food. Other sources of apigenin include grapefruit, peppermint, thyme, celery, and even chamomile tea.
But as for store-bought celery as the new superfood? Sorry, I’m not buying it! Not to dis celery, I am a fan of it and I grow it as well - it’s required for stock base in soups - in which case who needs it blanched anyway? I’m just saying that celery with pale green stalks is an inferior product in my opinion - a pale imitation to the real thing. By the way, when juicing anything include the fibre by using a blender not a juicer - expel the fibre and there goes all the beneficial cellulose with it! So back to chlorophyll - How will you know if your foods are packed with it, and what is so great about it? Well, any green coloured leafy vegetable or herb is bound to be rich in chlorophyll, think parsley, kale, wheat grass, spring onions, spinach etc. The word chlorophyll is derived from the Greek words: Chloros (meaning green) and phyllon (meaning leaf) - no more explanation needed! The health benefits of chlorophyll are extensive - here’s a quick rundown. Chlorophyll detoxifies the liver, alkalizes the blood, boosts immunity, regulates iron levels, assistes healing, regulates blood sugar, activates metabolism, aids weight loss and has anti-ageing effects on the skin. Research has shown chlorophyll to retard cancerous tumour growths. It slows down the progression of lung cancer, allowing other healing agents to eliminate the already present cancer
The apigenin that is so abundant in parsley has been found to have remarkable anti-inflammatory and antioxidant effects as well. Parsley also has more vitamin K than kale, with just 2 tablespoons of raw parsley containing 155 percent of the RDA. Vitamin K is known as the blood vitamin. The more I write the more I side with parsley over celery, though in reality a little bit of everything good is usually the way to go. Parsley is just so potently good for you that you can’t afford not to have it in your diet - so next time eat your garnish! In conclusion, grow and juice whatever green leafy vegetable you like, I just think that parsley is so good because of the health benefits and the fact that it will effectively grow on its own, flowering, attracting bees, easily self-seeding, multiplying and sprouting up in rock crevices and pavement - hence its common name - rock celery. Quite possibly parsley will be the next years fad - especially if I can have anything to do with it….now how about that Instagram account!

At Home in Bali
Design ideas and inspiration for tropical living
Getting in the swing with a hammock Visiting friends in the UK recently, I was struck by how every piece of furniture in the house was suffused with memories: the distressed leather armchair, sole survivor from post-student, pre-living-together days; the Ercol coffee table salvaged from a London skip in those tentative first days of home ownership, that Victorian drop-leaf table inherited from a long-gone relative, the lacquerware cabinet acquired during an overseas stint in Shanghai. Every piece is a repository of memories, a trigger for stories. It got me thinking. What memories does the furniture in my Bali home hold? Most of us lucky enough to be here either live with what comes with our rental or, if starting with a blank canvas, embark on a glorious shopping spree — worshiping at the likes of Warisan and Pondok Padi, and pouncing on increasingly hard-to-find Dutch antique furniture. I only know a handful of people who brought a (carefully curated) lifetime of home items with them when moving to Bali in recent years… giving us a fascinating glimpse of their former lives in the process. The furniture we have acquired in the decade since we first took up residence in our ravine-edge home, is a mix of custom-designed (yes, I am proud to say our dining table was designed by Jesus), and ‘finds’ in Kerebokan. I am particularly fond of an over-sized Javanese daybed overburdened with cushions. It’s impossible to sit in stately formality on this ‘antique’; instead, it’s designed for sprawling, for whittling away the hours watching the dragonflies hovering over the pond and kingfishers patrolling the ravine edge. But by far my favourite piece invites even more indolence; a hand-woven hammock in my favourite colours (green and orange, if you ask) — a gift from our daughter years ago following a trip to Bolivia. Stretched between two coconut-wood pillars in the living pavilion, it swings (perhaps too precariously for some delicate souls) over a 1.5-metre drop into the garden. I swear this has magical powers; the ability to settle the mind and induce a serene Zen state within seconds. Lazily swaying in the frangipani-infused breeze, suspended midair in a dream-fuelled state, is as close to heaven as it gets. Every Bali home deserves a hammock or two. Not any hammock, mind you; not those garishly coloured ones made of parachute ‘silk. But the kind that evokes thoughts of toe-curlingly delicious siestas on a white-sand beach, Tequila Sunrise in hand, blazing sunset on the horizon followed by a canopy of stars high above. And there’s only one hammock that will do: a made-in-Bali Muntigunung hammock.
Arguably the best in Asia, these supremely comfortable creamy confections are the stuff of gossamer dreams, just as at home in a starkly contemporary villa as in a more traditional setting. They come with a wonderful back story too, as Ubud’s ‘walking angel’ Daniel Elber, the Swiss exbanker behind the phenomenal Muntigunung project and non-profit Future for Children, explains. “I love hammocks, and wondered if it was possible to create hammocks up in Munti, as a sustainability project to provide work and income for the villagers. A Swiss volunteer researched this, and presented the concept to create hammocks in Muntigunung in the same way as Central America. It was a convincing paper, so I suggested she head to central America to find a teacher. She found the ideal candidate in El Salvador – the ‘Land of the Hammocks’ considered to produce the best in the world.” Somehow she persuaded macho master hammock-maker Walter Cruz to travel to remote Kul Kul to teach 35 Munti women his ancestral craft. “Walter put his heart into teaching them to produce top quality hammocks — it was a nine-week party,” Daniel chuckles. “He spoke only Spanish, my Swiss volunteer had a little Spanish, English and basic Indonesian, and a Balinese team member had a little English. But somehow they all managed!” The result is a stunning collection of high-end hand-woven hammocks. Top of the range is the statement-making Agung, with its beautifully carved camphor-wood spreaders and crocheted decorative detail. Popular with luxury villas and boutique resorts, it is IDR1.950.000, or IDR2.200.000 if you’d like to incorporate custom lettering such as your villa name. (Note to self: what a fab wedding gift, or way to mark a special birthday.) If you’re looking for one that takes up less space and adapts to the body, then consider the spreader-free Muntigunung Hammock with Chongos tassles, weighing in at just 3.5k, with a price tag of IDR1.500.000. The Chair Hammock (IDR1.100.000) is, in Daniel’s view, “probably the most under-estimated decorative object, because, with colourful pillows, you can hang it anywhere.” And finally there’s the Baby Hammock,
the lightest and least expensive at 2.5k and IDR800.000. How irresistible! I first came across these amazing hammocks at the tail end of a 12km hike into the dry drought-prone mountain slopes of eastern Bali. The award-winning Muntigunung Trek offers so much more than jaw-dropping vistas and a completely different view of Bali; it’s the chance to contribute to the livelihood of Bali’s poorest communities, and to witness the social enterprise initiatives created by Daniel’s non-profit, among them hammock-making. “When you buy a hammock, you are creating up to three weeks’ work in Muntigunung,” he explains. “You are creating work for someone who previously may have never worked, never had water, was never registered, or had to beg for a living.” Isn’t that a compelling reason for acquiring a Muntigunung hammock? Added to the fact that each one is a work of art! I have my eye on an Agung and a baby hammock. Which will YOU choose? Buy yours at the newly opened Muntigunung shop in Sanur (Jl Danau Poso 57), or at Above the Clouds, Nyuh Kuning. You can also get in direct contact with Ngurah and order through ngr012000@yahoo. com. Or, as Daniel urges, “In order to understand what your gift is creating, go and do the trek yourself. Sit with these people, look at what they are doing, how they are talking with each other, their sense of pride and strong community.” To book your place on the trek, email muntigunungtrekking@ gmail.com If you would like to share some interesting home design products, services and ideas, please get in touch. The Frugal Balinist ✱ Back to school tips Be warned that stalls that set up on school grounds or on sidewalks outside schools hawk teh gelas, chocolates, puffed corn, rice snacks and sugary powder drinks with high levels of fat and sugars and zero nutritional value. Bali’s international schools have their own canteens which serve healthier fare. *From mid-June to mid-July is the most expensive and most crowded time to fly around Indonesia. Avoid traveling during these hectic months altogether. *Pertinent discussions about schooling in Bali can be found on the Bali Expat Forum website.*Copy shops around schools tend to have the best prices for copying and scanning. *The cheapest food stalls (warung) are found around schools. If the parking lot is packed with motorcycles, it means the place is full of students from nearby schools who go there for the discounted pop mie (Rp2000), bakso (Rp5000), mie ayam (Rp5000) and drinks (Rp1000). *The best time to buy a pig or used motorbike is during school enrollment time when families are stressed paying out for school fees upfront.
Lion Air Rp1,126,000; Sriwijaya Air Rp1,732,500. You can lower these airfares by changing your departure times and routes. Additionally, Indonesian domestic airlines have abolished checked baggage allowances and have limited carry-on luggage to just 7 kg. Substantial charges are now applied for checked baggage. As a result, different types of land travel are now becoming popular because it allows passengers to bring more luggage on their journeys. *On the upside, many of the Bali’s hotels offer rooms at 50% off what they cost in July and August. Spring is also the best time to head to Europe without the crowds. Airfare is about 20% cheaper in March, April and May versus June, July and August, - savings that can add up to between $160 and $210 a ticket. *Procedures for processing a 10% VAT tax refund has become more user friendly at Bali’s Ngurah Rai Airport. Instead of spending a minimum of Rp500,000 at a single shop on a single day, travelers are now allowed a refund if shopping receipts from a (limited) number of qualified shops across a number of shopping days totaling Rp500,000.
✱ Back to the garden Build a strong animal and fowl proof fence that can be made cheaply and easily from local resources such as sticks and earth bricks or buy pagar kawat (wire fencing) or pagar kawat kasa (mesh fencing). A water source is needed nearby. If it’s too far, your housekeeper may not have the desire to water the plants. Build a garden at the bore-pump (sumur bor) to make use of the wastewater. Buy only non-hybrid open pollinated vegetable seeds indigenous to the area, which are more resilient to pests and local conditions. Hybrid commercial seeds from farmer’s stores are weak and require chemicals. Use flat topped raised beds as wide as two arm’s length, allowing the gardener to reach the center of the bed without having to step on the bed and compact the soil. The harsh sun damages open soils, so mulch all soils. Mulch turns into nutrients in the soil. Mulched soil is more productive, more pest resistant, conserves moisture in dry periods and protects the soil from erosion in heavy downpours. Fertilize gardens weekly. Use animal manure to make compost and liquid fertilizers. Mulch crops can be grown nearby to cut and refurbish the garden’s mulch. Grow food everywhere. Climbing vines can be grown on a fence, shade tolerant plants can grow under tree canopies. Wastewater can irrigate a pumpkin patch.
✱ Travel sense Domestic air travel has become costlier. Direct tickets from Jakarta to Bali: Garuda Rp1,951,100; Citilink Rp1,610,000;
✱ Finding the right school There is a wide variety of preschools, neighborhood kindergartens (taman kanak-kanak or TK) as well as international standard (sekolah bertaraf internasional) schools (Gandhi, Dyatmika, Taman Rama National Plus School, Bali Island School, Asian International School Bali, tri-lingual Chis School, etc.) offering international curriculums at a cost less than foreign international schools. To find the one most appropriate for your child, first ask friends and colleagues what schools they recommend. Visit at least three schools to meet the principal and teachers and assess the environment and atmosphere. Computers and flashy toys don’t make a school; what matters most is your child’s experience. How long has the school been operating? How much schooling do members of the teaching staff have? What is the child-to-teacher ratio? How
clean are the bathrooms and cooking areas? Where are diapers changed? How good are the school’s fire and building safety standards? Check out the library? Do the kids appear well occupied, healthy and well cared for? Are the toys accessible, safe and appropriate for their ages? Is the school van safe?
✱ Open for business!
Denpasar’s newly rebuilt 4-storey Pasar Badung, Bali’s largest public market located it the heart of its capital city, now opens every morning at 4 am. Though still retaining the charm of a traditional market, it has been updated to modern, hygienic standards with escalators, handicap access and tabletop vendors and enclosed kiosks selling fresh meats, fish, vegetables, fruits, spices, herbs and flowers at local prices. Now there’s a children’s play area and an adjoining river walk that is popular with anglers (closes at night). Wear good shoes as the potholed pathways as you wriggle your way through the chaos can be muddy and slippery. At the Pasar Seni Kumbasari across the river, entrance is free and the prices are half or a third cheaper from normal tourist souvenir shops; open 6 am-12 am. Even parking a bicycle can be problematic due to the lack of space, so the cheapest and easiest way to go there is by using Grab (Rp100,000 for two from Kuta). *An even bigger produce market is the 24-hour indoor-outdoor Pasar Badung Baru in North Denpasar on Jl. Cokrominato near Ubung. Vendors start setting up the open-air stalls at 6 am. Dirt cheap prices! School News Gandhi Memorial Intercontinental School – Bali GMIS-Bali is an established IB World school in the heart of Bali, where young people thrive, learn and succeed. As an IB world school, GMIS aims to provide exceptional opportunities for each student in a supporting and challenging environment. GMIS-Jakarta is our mother school which was incepted in 1950. The well experienced teachers, well-versed programme coordinators and highly intellectual Principal Mr. A.P. Singh keep advising us from time to time. GMIS Bali is affiliated to International Baccalaureate Geneva-Switzerland and Cambridge International Examination UK. The IB programme provides students with a world-class, inquirybased learning experience that is linked to real life examples, enabling young people to be prepared for a future that is constantly changing. We are committed to the spirit of international education. We have a belief that each child is special and we encourage differentiated learning and teaching in our classes. Also students who need special attention are extended with this help after the school hours are over and also during June-July and December holidays (subject to the availability of the teacher). GMIS-Bali offers the three programmes of the IB: 1. PYP for Grades Nursery to 5 (age range 3 to 10) As an authorized PYP (Primary Years Programme) school, our aim is to develop a caring school community fostering respect for individual and cultural diversity. Among the key components of IB-PYP at GMIS, we are teaching international-mindedness: who we are in our school, in our community and in the world; focusing on the social, emotional and academic well-being of students; continuing professional development for teachers to expand their knowledge and expertise in teaching IB-PYP to high international benchmarks; and regular visits by the International Baccalaureate Organization to affirm the quality of the program. 2. MYP for Grades 6 to 10 (age range 11 to 15) The MYP (Middle Years Programme) is built upon three fundamental concepts which include culture, connections, and communication. Learning experience for students in the MYP will focus on concepts that are timeless, abstract, universal, global, holistic, and transferrable. This investment will authentically prepare our students to become internationallyminded. Thus being innovators and critical problem-solvers that are able to compete effectively in the 21st Century. In striving to
meet the needs of a demanding and internationally relevant education we work diligently to create a progressive learning environment. For all subjects taught in MYP grade 9 and 10 we use the Cambridge International Curriculum, IGCSE also which is the world’s largest provider of international education programs and qualifications for 13-16 year olds. 3. Diploma programme for Grades 11 & 12 (age range 16 to 18) We believe that IB fosters a kind of independence, an interdisciplinary style of thinking and questioning that creates scholars and global citizens. For this reason, the IB Diploma is widely recognized by universities around the world as a symbol of academic excellence and one of the strongest educational experiences available in secondary education today. GMIS prides itself on high academic standards (IBDP 2016 Highest Score is 43 out of 45). Truly excellent education is about developing a passion for life-long learning and capability for independent thinking. Our confident and articulate students are encouraged to discover interests that extend beyond the classroom. Our school community has 33 different nationalities, enabling students to develop moral values, and display kindness, courage, respect and integrity towards each other and throughout our diverse and multicultural environment. CO-CURRICULAR ACTIVITIES Co-Curricular Activities (CCAs) are an integral part of the holistic education that will enrich the learning experiences of our students. In GMIS, our CCA programme is designed to cater to the interests and abilities of our students, guided by our school’s core valuesCare, Teamwork, Resilience, Excellence, Confidence, Integrity, Respect and Service. We believe that through sustained and active participation in CCAs, our students are able to develop social- emotional competencies that will prepare them for a rapidly changing world. Hence, the CCA department places great emphasis in fostering camaraderie, developing individual potential in sports, clubs, performing arts and uniformed group activities, instilling a life-long passion for the activity, inculcating leadership qualities, sportsmanship, as well as, developing robust character with a sound body and a disciplined mind. ISS team has been hired for the purpose to ensure that GMIS- Bali is a clean zone in every way.
THEATRE IN GMIS-BALI At GMIS, we offer Drama as part of the Middle Years Programme as a subject. Through both the IB Theatre course and our co-curricular theatre company strive to help students develop a lifelong passion for the arts as well as strengthen their ability to take risks, solve problems, collaborate, persevere, listen and empathize with others. Our students not only study works of the established playwrights, but also, more powerfully, they create their own theatrical pieces to examine important issues. They learn to modulate their own voices, both individually and as part of an ensemble, to enhance their experiences of life. Last year we boast of staging two plays which are “Les Misérables” and “Ali Baba and 40 thieves”. We are incredibly excited to celebrate the twelve glorious years in Bali. This promises to be a year filled with golden opportunities for all of our students. We strive to find ways that we may better ourselves in every field. We embark on this journey with a pledge to you, our students and parents, that this will be a year of engaging, meaningful and rigorous work in our classrooms, combined with special events and a plethora of extracurricular clubs and activities, performing arts groups, and numerous sports activities. Bali For Kids This week I’m featuring ocean-based activities to do with kids. Considering that Bali is an island surrounded by water, and that many people come here for its beaches, sun and sand, it seems fitting to include family trips that involve the sea. Besides, if your kids are like mine, they are restless just sitting on the beach and need to stay active.
Benoa Beach in Nusa Dua or Sanur Beach in Sanur. The cost includes pick up and return transfer from most areas. The tours are run by Wira Water Sports Bali. You can contact them on +62 822 4714 8222 or+62 813 3956 3400 or by email at info@water-sports-bali.com, or check out their website at https://www.water-sports-bali.com/seawalker-bali/.
****************************************************************** Odyssey Submarine (Jalan Raya Kuta No. 9X, Kuta) offers an underwater experience for kids without the need for scuba or snorkel gear (or training). The Odyssey Submarine is a battery-powered sub that carries 36 people down to a depth of 150 feet (or more) in air-conditioned comfort. Your kids can catch a peek at coral reefs and schools of tropical fish from the safety of this underwater excursion vessel. The ride lasts around 45 minutes. The ticket price includes a transfer boat to reach the sub, as well as lunch back on shore. Departure starts at Amuk Bay, in East Bali. The submarine ride costs USD $95 for adults and USD $65 for children under 12 years old. Visit their website at http://submarine-bali.com, call them on +62 361 759777 or 759888 or email them at reservation@submarine-bali.com.
******************************************************************** Aditya Tanjung Benoa Watersports offer parasailing adventures from Tanjung Benoa beach in Nusa Dua, in Bali’s south. Parasailing involves being harnassed to a giant parachute-like sail which is then pulled along high over water by a speed boat. Parasailers wear life jackets, as they’ll be landing in the water. Life jackets are provided and there is a guide to assist bringing people down who rides in the boat. This is a quick adventure, lasting only three or four minutes. You can choose single parasailing or tandem (more than one person). Prices start at IDR 110,000 per person. The minumum age for participating in this sport is eight and professional guides can accompany children on their parasail, or parents can take children with them. You can book online thourgh Wira Water Sports Bali at https://www.water-sportsbali.com/booking/ or call them on their office line at +62 366 558 1096.
******************************************************************
Bali Seawalker
Another underwater adventure that also doesn’t require scuba certification is the Bali Sea Walker. During the sea walk, you use a special helmet that is fitted with oxygen so you can breath air and walk along the sea bottom. The Sea Walker guide (who is also a trained scuba diver) takes you down a flight of stairs to a depth of six meters, and you hold onto a special pipeline as you walk along the sand on the bottom of the ocean. You will see coral reefs and fish up close, without needing tanks. The walk takes about 30 minutes and costs IDR 760,000-830,000 per person. The minimum booking is for two people. Kids must be at least ten years old. The Sea Walker tour runs from either Tanjung
water safety standards, and in swift water rescue.
Bali Sobek
The Sobek Light River Run covers about six kilometers, with Class 2 & 3 rapids with some drops, starting at 400 meters above sea level and finishing at 250 meters. The trip runs for an hour and includes towel, hot shower and buffet lunch. The minimum age for this trip is seven. Price is USD $45 for either child or adult. The Sobek Classic River Run covers about 11 kilometers, with Class 2 & 3 rapids, with drops and pools. The trip runs for about two hours, and also includes towel, hot shower and lunch. The minimum age for this trip is also seven. Price is USD $790 for adults and USD$52 for kids. Sobek also offers the Sobek Classic @ Telaga Waja, which is a more intense rafting trip, covering about 10 kilometers, with Class 3+ rapids and continuous drops. The price is USD $79 for adults and USD $52 for kids over seven. You can book online through Sobek’s website at https:// balisobek.com or contact them at +62 361 729016 or email reservation@balisobek.com.
Tanjung Benoa Watersports
******************************************************************** This last is not ocean-related although it is on water. I try to mix up activities around Bali so they are not exclusively down South or around Ubud, for example. I would personally recommend going on a river-rafting trip and it’s a fun family activity, although not with very young children.
This column is published monthly. If you have any events or activities, anywhere in Bali, for kids or teens, that you would like publicized, please email all relevant details (time, date, description, location) to LizinBali@gmail.com.
Bali Sobek Rafting (Jl. Waribang No. 9, Denpasar Timur) runs on the Ayung River near Ubud. Established in 1989, Sobek was the first river running adventure company in Bali and is still the oldest. For safety reasons, all Sobek’s river guide leaders are trained to both US and Australian white

Restaurant Review
Not Only Sushi!
Sushi Hana began many years ago as just a small sushi bar, in the early days of Sunset Road. Unlike many other restaurants that have opened on this busy roadway and failed, Sushi Hana prospered. So much that it has moved from its initial small space into a much larger one a bit further along Sunset Road. It is now a very impressive Japanese restaurant offering all the standards plus many innovative menu items.
Kamameshi dishes are unique to Sushi Hanna. The literal translation is one of ‘Kettle rice’ as it is cooked in a ‘kami’ or kettle. The original is just baked rice marinated in spicy snow crab, with salmon, unagi, grilled chicken and hanakatsi [a crumbed batter]. Being a Japanese restaurant there are many seafood and vegetarian options. One of the best is their Baked Scallops, 8 scallops, each topped with snow crab, tobiiko, wakame, mayo and eel sauce. Even the Gyoza at Sushi Hanna, that steamed then pan-fried dumpling, is stuffed with seafood rather than the usual meat filling, or there is Cheese Baked Crab and Salmon Mentai Don [half baked salmon with mentai sauce on rice]. Teriyaki Tofu is silken tofu [the soft silken Japanese version of tofu] with a mayonnaise and teriyaki sauce. Enoki Mushrooms are wrapped with pan-fried marinated salmon and nori, also serve with a teriyaki sauce. For a bit of fusion they also serve Calamari Rings, lightly crumbed and crunchy. Head of the soup list is a traditional Miso as well as a Salmon Miso which is with Shiitaki mushrooms and Shirataki noodles. The great Sukiyaki [beef hotpot] is also listed here under soups, and they offer both chicken and seafood versions as well.
The new Sushi Hanna consists of many small rooms as well as an indoor garden courtyard, very impressive! Appetisers include Cawaw Mushi, Agedashi Tofu, Edamame and Baked Salmon with snow crab, wakame and eel sauce and Crisp Salmon Skin, also with eel sauce. Special dishes, always available include a Salmon Mentai Don, a rice bowl topped with baked salmon and that tasty mentai sauce [spicy mayo], Baked Scallop [8 scallops with snow crab, tobiko, wakame and sauce, and the great Kawaii Maki [pictured] a combination of crab stick, salmon, tamago, and oboro served with torched creamy eel sauce on top, Flamed Mentai Roll [crunchy chicken katsu, wakame, cream cheese and spicy sauce]. Sashimi, of course, is also available; Salmon, Tuna, Salmon Belly or a mixed platter. The Maki Rolls incude Kappa, Avocado, Tamago, Smoked Salmon, Tuna, Prawn Tempura and Kani. The Volcano Rolls are very popular, jelly fish and kani, tempura flakes and a bit of spice as is the Futomaki Roll; wakame, kani, ebi, inari, oboro, tamago and cucumber. The Sakura Roll has baked salmon and snow crab with tamago and cucumber.

Sushi Hanna. Sunset Road, Kuta. 849.6501. 11.00 a.m. to 10.00 p.m., daily. Inside in air-con. Garden Courtyard. Large area at front. Rp. 300,000 for two [+ drinks]. All major cards. Japanese. Limited. Smiling. Relaxed. Innovative.
Other mains include Chicken [or Salmon] Teriyaki, and Obonomiyaki, which is often referred to as a Japanese pancake or even pizza due to its round shape, in fact it is more like an omelette. Then there is the Yofu Hamburg, or Japanese hamburger of minced beef stuffed with a cheese filling and served with cajun fries. Butter rice is prepared in the teppan and can be topped with either chicken or salmon. Other seafood dishes include Salmon Head and Grilled Squid and pan-fried Salmon, both with the hot and spicy peri-peri sauce. Dinner sets are available; Kamameshi, Donmono and Kare, as are Bento Boxes [teriyaki, katsu, salmon or karaage]. Interesting desserts include the Wobbly Pancake and Chewy Waffle or Honey Toast. Parfaits can be many different flavours as too can the Kakigori [shaved ice]; chocolate, strawberry, matcha, honey dew and bubble gum. A very interesting Japanese restaurant with an extensive and innovative menu, good value.

Update Reef is probably one of the best, if not the best, seafood restaurant in Bali. Its appearance is deceptive, as the space is not very flash. It is found beachfront at Maya Sanur and meals can be taken there or at the adjoining attractive Tree Café. Whilst there is a large range of daily seafood dishes it is the salmon ones that stand out. The salmon is imported fresh [chilled, not frozen] on a daily basis, from Tasmania, Australia. Other seafood specials can be Tuna [sashimi, with lemongrass, shallots, kaffir lime relish and lime chilli, Squid [char-grilled Thai-style], Prawns [in XO sauce], House Smoked Salmon [in a bagel with onions, lettuce, capers and horseradish cream] and seafood versions of Mie Goreng, a Fish Soup and the Balinese Sambal Udang.

Bonito is found on Ubud’s ‘Cheap Eat Street’, Jln. Goutomo [no parking, pedestrians only, runs between Dewa Sita and Raya Ubud] where many places offer mains at Rp. 50,000, or less. Bonito is marginally more expensive but that does not seem to deter the customers. A healthy salad; Spinach, avocado and mango with pickled fennel, rocket, caramelised cashew nuts and a ginger sesame lime vinaigrette. Fancy a burger; Snapper or Lamb [with gorgonzola, caramelised onion, roasted garlic and mustard aioli]. For something more substantial there is the Crisp Duck Breast in orange soy, BBQ Baby Back Ribs, or the Balinese Pepes Ikan using mahi-mahi. Bonito is even worth a stop for just a sandwich [on rosemary focaccia]; grilled chicken, avocado, brie and pesto or Vegan roasted organic vegetables; zucchini, eggplant. mushrooms, tomato and peppers. Finish with a ginger crème brulee. As well as a range of healthy juices they also offer wine by the glass. Henry’s is a Bar & Grill on Jln. Kartika Plaza, next to Lippo Mall. It is all about dry aged beef that has been grilled, smoked or cured. Start with a plate of cold cuts to share; Pastrami, country-style Pork Terrine, Duck Prosciutto, Salami and Smoked Ham. Other strarters can be an Octopus Salad, or one of Grilled Beetroot and Cheese, a Caesar with charred pork added, or Chicken Liver Mousse. Mains are Dry-Aged beef [rib-eye, rump, tenderloin or T-Bone]. Non-beef mains are Smoked Chicken, Lamb Rack, Sausages, Smoked Salmon Fillet, King Prawns or Mahi- Mahi. For a lighter meal there are also Burgers, a BLT or Sausages on a bun.

Indigo on Jln. Pantai Berawa, Canggu, is quality Japanese. They offer classic dishes as well as their innovative ‘new style’ sashimi and the unusual Yakimono dishes cooked over the charcoal grill. Start with a refreshing Soba Noodle Salad or Alaskan King Crab and Tuna Tartare. The new style Sashimi can be Salmon, Otoro, Red Snapper or Scallop. Their Yakimono can be seafood, chicken or beef. For something very different try the Gyoza stuffed with foie gras. For lunch their de luxe BENTO boxes are the way to go. Happy Chappy of Jln. Braban, Kerobokan, have announced the opening of new outlets styled Happy Chappy Express in both Kuta and Legian, concentrating on their substantial range of dim sum product, prepared fresh every day. The first ones have now opened at the front of Bali Discovery Mall on Jln. Kartika Plaza, South Kuta, and on Jln. Padma Utara, Legian.
Kasava is on Jln. Kayu Cendana, Seminyak.. They serve a mix of cuisines, designed for the tourist. Satays, Bruschettas, Chicken Wings, Stuffed Mushrooms, all the standard items that you would expect. But breaking away from the norm there is a Thai Salad, Yum Woon Sen, an International one of Punpkin and Feta. And a Japanese Horenzo [spinach, green apple , topped with katsuobushi & nori, served with honey mustard dressing. Then back to the norm with a selection of Pasta and Pizza.
He’enalu Café is in Pecatu. It is a modern international café with a Hawaiian touch. Open for breakfast, their main offering is the egg special with just about everything, even real bacon. Alternatives are the Breakfast Burritos and Quesadillas, Avocado Toast and a Vegan Falafel Platter. Their signature dishes include Poke Bowls, Loco Moco, Hawaiian Fried Rice and Falafel Tacos.
Folk is on Jln. Monkey Forest in central Ubud yet offers a swim-up bar. There is an entrance fee if you intend to swim [includes a towel] and a larger one for a sunbed area of up to 4 persons [includes plates of snacks]. The restaurant has been operating for quite some time but to the rear of it has been added this pool bar area [what used to be one of the many Spas operating by Paris]. The food is diverse; smoothie bowls, cumin spiced pumpkin sandwich and a wide variety of salads. The soft shell crab burger is one of Folk’s most popular dishes.
Souphoria on Jln. Bumbak, in Canggu, is most unusual in that their menu is all pork! They serve their pork ribs in a soup. Pork Sate may not be that unusual but these are very large ones. Loco Moco is a Hawaiian special of rice, meat and a fried egg on top. At Souphoria that meat is of course, pork. Many of the dishes are based on local standards, the Crisp Pork Belly with Balinese sambal matah, the Rendang with pork and the Betutu, pork ribs. Or you can go Chinese with Pork Belly and Salted Egg. Nothing is wasted here…. you can also order Pig Ears, very spicy!

Agriculture Ministry to train 12,000 ‘millennial farmers’ in Bali I Made Agus Wijaya, 29, spends most of his day in front of his computer at an elementary school in Bangli village, Tabanan, Bali. From 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. Monday to Friday, he works at the school. Once his working hours are done, he changes into a T-shirt and shorts, takes a sickle and heads out into the rice fields. “My father was a farmer. I should continue what he did,” Agus said. Agus was taught to farm by his late father since he was 6 years old. He is used to getting dirty and working under the scorching sun. “It doesn’t matter. I enjoy it,” said Agus, who now manages a 7,000 square meter plot of land he inherited from his father. Agus also allows parts of the land to be managed by other farmers who share their profits. Agus said he was proud of being a farmer although many do not aspire to take up the profession these days. “Most young people in the city think becoming a farmer would lower their status. They don’t know that many farmers send their children to university. If done seriously, farming is a fruitful endeavor,” he said. The only thing that worries Agus is the decreasing value of harvests. Although he is confident he can continue farming and would never sell his father’s land, Agus said he could not leave the school. He is also pursuing an undergraduate degree at a local university. “I just need something that keeps me informed but I would never stop farming. Cruise ships cancelling visits to Lombok due to poor trash control Kompas.com reports that three international cruise ships have cancelled coming plans to call on the Island of Lombok. The general manager of PT Pelabuhan Indonesia in Lembar (Pelindo III), Erry Ardiyanto, said that of the three ships to cancel plans to stop in Lombok, one vessel specifically mentioned trash at the destination port as the reason for deciding not to visit. “3 of 26 cruise ships (for 2019) have cancelled. The main reasons given were the recovery process following last year’s earthquake and the problem of trash,” said Erry, speaking at the port of Lembar on Monday, March 11, 2019. Erry said the decision to cancel the cruise was received from the ships’ agent in Singapore. Each of the cancelled ships were expected to bring between 1,500 and 2,000 international passengers to Lombok. “Trash at tourist stops was also one the complaints. But, the topic of trash we have handled,” explained Erry. Erry said that in dealing with problems like trash at destinations, PT Pelindo III cannot overcome such problems single-handedly, but must also receive the support of the public. Pelindo is in communication with Lombok’s Tourism Service and leading tourism stakeholders in the province of West Nusa Tenggara. Adding: “These efforts have been done to raise the level of concern and desire to protect the natural environment in order to protect the welfare of Lombok and its people, and to safeguard the Island’s short-term economic needs and its long-term sustainability in the future.” Meanwhile, the chairman of the NTB Chapter of the Association of Tour and Travel Agents (ASITA), Dewantoro Umbu Joka, freely admitted that the problem of trash and the cleanliness of public toilets needs the attention of the regional government following last year’s earthquakes. He commented that while cruise liners may only stop for a single day in Lombok, the success of those visits can have a long and lasting effect of Lombok’s international image as a tourism destination. Adding: “Don’t let the simple problem of trash become an obstacle. This is an internal problem that we must tackle together. Before tourist arrive the trash should be removed and the toilets must be working well.”
In response, the head of tourism (Kadispar) for West Nusa Tenggara, H. Lalu Mohammad Faozal, denies the news of the cancellation of three cruise ships to Lombok in connection with hygiene and trash problems. “There has been no rescheduling or cancellation of cruise ship visits to Lombok,” said Faozal when interviewed by Kompas.com on Monday, March 11, 2019. According to Lombok’s head of tourism, his office has taken steps to routinely clean the coastline in several key areas of Lombok assisted by the local community in each location. Adding: “We, on behalf of the NTB Tourism office, feel the news of the cancellation of cruise ship visits to Lombok is damaging and far removed from the truth.” Undeterred, the Pelindo III boss confirmed the loss of ship visits due to complaints of seaside trash in Lombok. Saying now is the time for Lombok to rise again and address the problem of hygiene. He acknowledged that Lombok tourism was on the road to recovery, proven by the coming visit of four cruise ships over the past three months. The four cruise ships calling on Lombok’s Port of Lembar over the past months include: MV. Star Legend, MV. Aidavita, MV. Star Legend all during January 2019 and a return of the MV Aidavita in February 2019. [balidiscovery.com March 17, 2019]
“This problem not only occurs in Bali and Indonesia. It’s a problem all over the world,” Agriculture Ministry official Syukur Iwantoro said. In an attempt to encourage young people to continue farming, the ministry has launched a farming training program in Badung regency with the goal of educating more than 12,000 young “millennial farmers” from across the island. More than 500 farmers from nine regencies and cities joined the first phase of the program this month. Syukur said similar programs would be developed in all provinces in the country. The government has declared 2019 the year of the Indonesian farmers’ revival and has attempted to improve farmers’ access to capital, markets and technology to improve their productivity. “Millennial farmers will be the backbone of agriculture in the future,” he said. I am the son of a farmer and I will preserve my father’s legacy,” he emphasized. Agus is one of a small number of young people in Bali who are still eager to work as farmers. The rapid growth of tourism on the island has not only led to massive urbanization but has also seen many young Balinese born into farming families decide to work in tourism, leaving many plots of land abandoned, which are eventually converted into tourism areas.
Syukur added that Indonesia had also been appointed as the world’s pilot project for farmer regeneration. The program is supported by the International Food Agriculture Development (IFAD), which has given US$50 million for the program in Indonesia for three years. The program focuses on fostering young, productive and modern farmers. Agus, who has also joined the program, said he was very happy to be able to take part. “The most important thing for me is how to keep the prices of our products steady. That’s our greatest concern as farmers,” he said. [The Jakarta Post March 13, 2019]
Badung Regency officials in Bali place closure stickers on entrance of Sky Garden Discotheque for failing to hold proper business registration NusaBali reports that Bandung Regency Enforcement Officer (Satpol PP) have placed stickers at the entrance to the Sky Garden Discotheque in Legian, Kuta ordering it to halt operations until it can prove it has all operating permits in hand. The “order to close” stickers were installed by Satpol PP officials mid-day on Friday, March 15, 2019. The head of Satpol PP for Bandung, I Gusti Agung Surya Kerthanegara, explained the official “sealing” of the business took place mid-day on Friday. More than 10 enforcement officers visited Sky Garden demanding to be shown all the required permits and licenses. The management of the popular night spot were reportedly unable to present a certificate showing completed registration as a tourism business (TDUP). Immediately thereafter, the “first reminder” in the form of a sticker ordering the Sky Garden’s temporary closure were affixed to the entrance.
Kerthanegara told officials that there had been a change of management and the current management was unaware that the old TDUP had expired. At that point, the new management of Sky Garden issued a formal promise to complete the registration process. But, after 15 working days had passed, the Sky Garden had not kept its promise causing Sat Pol PP officials to undertake the raid and install stickers ordering the night spot to close. The “first reminder” in the form of the closure sticker will apply for another 15 working days. If, at that point, the TDUP has still not been issued a “second reminder” will be issued. Kerthanegara said The Sky Garden will be closed if it cannot organize the needed permit. Efforts by NusaBali to contact the manager of Sky Garden, Harianto, by telephone were unsuccessful. [balidiscovery.com March 18, 2019]
Kerthanegara explained on Sunday, March 17, 2019: “We issued the first warning because the Sky Garden does not have an operational permit. In the past, they had one, but that expired last January. But until this date, the necessary permit has not been secured. We therefore issued the first warning.” Kerthanegara continued explaining that the TDUP issued to the Sky Garden ended on January 16, 2019. The Regency official claimed the company has shown no good will in extending its old permit, despite being summoned on February 12, 2019. The Sky Garden did not answer the summons, prompting the issuance of a second summons on February 26, 2019. Three days later the management of the Sky Garden reported to the Sat Pol PP office to make a formal promise to organize the permit.
Iconic Grand Inna Bali Beach hotel gets Rp 2.8t facelift Grand Inna Bali Beach, Bali’s first five-star hotel and one of the island’s most iconic man-made constructions, is getting a massive facelift as its parent company embarks on a Rp 2.8 trillion multi-stage expansion project. The four-year-long project will transform the hotel and its premises into a sprawling and luxurious resort offering several hotels with more than 1,000 rooms and 73 premium villas, including a presidential villa. It will also boast a convention facility that can accommodate up to 10,000 people, a lifestyle art market, an eco-park on 16 hectares of green and forested area, as well as a pier and a helipad. Upon the completion of the project, the area will be rebranded as Kawasan Hotel Indonesia Bali, the largest tourist resort in Sanur. “This is a very historic hotel, the construction of which was initiated by our founding father, President Soekarno, who envisioned Bali as the center of Indonesian tourism. Hopefully, this major revitalization project will bring Sanur, Bali and us closer to his vision,” State-Owned Enterprises Minister Rini Soemarno said Friday morning in Sanur. A few minutes earlier, Rini officiated the groundbreaking ceremony of phase 1 of the expansion. The ceremony was also attended by Bali Governor Wayan Koster and PT Hotel Indonesia Natour (HIN) president director Iswandi Said. A state-owned enterprise, HIN owns and operates 14 hotels across Sumatra, Java and Bali. Phase 1 will see the construction of two three-star hotels on a 2.4-hectare plot of land on the southern edge of the premises. Bali’s prominent architect Popo Danes is tasked with designing the properties and he will incorporate Sanur’s signature visual elements to the design. “The lobby will be graced with a canopy in the shape of a janggan,” he said, referring to the traditional long-tailed dragon-head kites that rule Sanur’s sky during the windy months of July and August. The hotels are expected to open in November 2020, with
one designed to be a city hotel and another a resort. “Once these hotels are ready, staff and workers of the Grand Inna Bali Beach will be transferred to these hotels and we will commence the renovation of the Grand Inna Bali Beach building,” stated Iswandi Said. Built in 1963, the 523-room Grand Inna Bali Beach was one of the first hotels that graced the white-sandy beach of Sanur, once a quiet village populated by fishermen and Hindu high priest families. Its tall, 10-story building rose to become a visual icon frequently featured in numerous publications and postcards in the 1980s and 1990s. In the late 1970s, the Bali administration issued a building code setting the maximum height of a building at 15 meters, making Grand Inna Bali Beach the tallest and the only 10-story hotel on the island. “We have carried out a technical review of the structure of Grand Inna Bali Beach and it is still safe. Therefore, much of the planned renovation project will deal with the interior of the hotel,” Iswandi Said added. The revitalization project will be carried out by PT Hotel Karya Indonesia, a consortium of four giant state-owned developers: PT Waskita Realty, PT Hutama Karya Realtindo, PT PP Properti Tbk. and PT Wika Realty Tbk.
