Bali Vegan Festival (6 – 8 October) Vegan and plant based diets are becoming increasingly popular across the globe. With documentaries such as ‘What the Health’ available for viewing on NetÀix it comes as no surprise that people are leaving meat behind for a more natural diet. Whilst the health bene¿ts of being vegan are widely recognised the ethical side of animal cruelty is also a major consideration. The Bali Vegan Festival seeks to unite the community in its message of kindness, compassion and love for animals and the earth. This is the third festival and a celebration of animals, the environment and the earth and is open to vegans and those who are curious. The festival aims to inspire, educate and enlighten about an alternative way of living. The main venue is Paradiso which is adjacent to the Earth Cafe and Market. There are too many sessions to mention but to give you an idea there are talks about a vegan diet for cancer prevention, food and emotions, raw foods. The festival also includes cooking classes, screenings, Reiki and Ayurveda. The website is comprehensive and has details of all the sessions. It is de¿nitely a festival worth attending and there are talks and events that I am sure appeal to all readers. Filastine & Nova (30 September) A very special event is going to take place at the Noodle, Sate Bar and Music Lounge that is Betelnut in the heart of Ubud. Grey Filastine from Barcelona and Nova from Malang next door in Java have teamed up to become a multimedia duo working to undermine borders. Based in Barcelona and often touring the world, the duo are currently on a Sea Paci¿c Tour which heads to Bali and then Australia. Their music mixes electronic beat production with layers of voice, concrete sounds, analogues and string. The evening will take you to another world using sound, video, design and dance. Filastine has an interesting resume, a former taxi driver from the USA who studied percussion in Brazil and the mystical brotherhoods in Morocco. From there his music career journeyed beyond the stars and just goes to show that anything is possible. One of Filastine’s tours brought him to Jakarta where he met vocalist Nova Ruth performing in Indonesia’s seminal rap group. Nova was raised singing Pentecostal spirituals and playing Javenese gamelan percussion. The two combined create sounds like no other and their show is where sound, image and ideas are embodied and well worth experiencing. The website below will have information about prices and times.

6 STORM DEVASTATION - COULD IT HAPPEN HERE? Houston, Texas, 2.00am. I was awoken by a thunderous beating of rain and wind against the house. I got up to see a deluge of almost horizontal rain lit up by lightning that was so frequent that it resembled a strobe light. But you couldn’t hear any thunder as it was drowned out by the noise of the wind and rain. I alerted the family as I wasn’t sure that the house, which like most houses in Texas was built of wood, could withstand the onslaught.

that you have everything you need to survive for several days while waiting for rescue. Simple things like ample fresh water supplies, non-perishable foods, medicines, first aid kits, torches etc. are not costly items but can make the difference between confidently surviving and desperation or worse.

No, this isn’t a tale from last month’s devastating hurricane Harvey which flooded Houston but an experience I had when I lived there some 30 years ago. Consequently I followed the recent events very closely. Even more so as I have clients who have now retired there and they were able to give me a real time report on what was happening. Fortunately they live just north of the overflowing reservoirs and came out of it safely. Thousands of others didn’t. Some 50,000 homes were completely flooded and half a million cars were damaged or destroyed.

It was reported that 80% of those affected by the flooding in Houston had no flood insurance, in many cases because they were told it was not necessary as they lived in a flood-free area! They may get some state and federal aid but the reality could be far from the promises. It is ironic indeed that Texas senators voted against giving federal aid to victims of Hurricane Sandy some years ago when it hit the north-east coast. When it comes to dipping into the country’s coffers there will be many who will say that taxpayers should not subsidise people who failed to take out insurance.

Texas was not alone

Clearly the message is that to avoid a physical disaster becoming a financial one make sure you have adequate insurance to cover your home and its contents. And insurance doesn’t stop there. Most people have insured their cars but a surprising number ignore the need for life insurance, despite the potential for financial ruin for dependents should something happen to the breadwinner. Medical insurance is another ‘must’, especially for expatriates. Yes, insurance costs money and it may end up being money ‘down the drain’ but it has bought piece of mind and if called upon can make the difference between full recovery or financial ruin.

While the skies were dumping 20 trillion gallons of water on Houston, other parts of the world were also getting a share. It did not draw as much media attention at the time but unprecedented rainfall was also affecting South Asia, including India, Pakistan and Bangladesh, causing a reported toll of over a thousand deaths. Then, barely two weeks later a category 5 hurricane wreaked havoc across the Caribbean, through Cuba and finally Florida. So could similar disasters hit Bali? Absolutely. The global trend to more extreme weather appears to be accelerating and few parts of the world are immune. Why? Theories abound, ranging from inevitable historical climate cycles to deforestation, urbanisation, over-population and carbon emissions. The consensus of scientists is that while there may be some uncontrollable factors there is definitely a link between human behaviour and global warming which in turn is leading to climate change. There is also a clear relationship between the warming of the oceans and the production of heavy rainfall. The world’s leaders are waking up to this and are moving towards a reduction in the burning of fossil fuels, one of the main causes of global warming. Unfortunately, the world’s greatest consumer of fossil fuels, the USA is going against the trend due to its leader President Trump declaring that climate change is a hoax. Perhaps nature was trying to make a point with the Texan floods and hurricane devastation in Florida, both events the worst in American history. Heavy rainfall is not the only threat Geography may ensure that hurricanes and typhoons stay clear of Indonesia but persistent tropical rains can still cause heavy flooding in the plains and devastating landslides in the hilly areas. But other non man-made threats to Bali and much of Indonesia are ever-present due to its proximity to several major geological faults. These can produce destructive volcanic eruptions, earthquakes and tsunamis at any time. Right now, Mount Agung shows signs of coming to life again, 54 years since its last major eruption that killed over 1,500 people in 1963. A similar number were killed in the eruption before that in 1902. So how can we face all these potential disasters? While we may never have to personally face a disaster situation the fact is that the chances of facing one are increasing. Good planning is the key to both surviving a disaster and avoiding financial ruin. Priority of course is survival. Be prepared before an event so that you have an escape plan or in case you cannot escape

But how do you survive a disaster financially?

Financial security also entails spreading the risk For many people a home is their main tangible asset. Insurance can protect it but a disaster like the one in Houston can have implications way beyond having your house rebuilt by the insurers. What if you want to move on after the bad memories or fears of a recurrence of the event? Who is going to buy a house in an area where many of the neighbours’ houses may now be derelict? And who is going to buy a house in an area which is now known to be subject to serious flooding? You can apply the same questions in the case of Bali or any other part of the world that is subject to physical hazards or even legal or political uncertainty.

Having assets other than your primary residence is the key to security. Those assets could include investment properties, offshore bank accounts or financial securities in the form of pension plans or portfolios of stocks, bonds and commodities in a safe offshore jurisdiction. A combination of all of these would be ideal. No investment is risk-free, but risk can be drastically reduced by diversification. At the end of the day it’s the old principle of not putting all your eggs in one basket. It’s still the dry season but keep your umbrella on standby; nature is full of surprises!

9 AWESOME SHIATSU AT ECO BALI SPA Although there’s literally hundreds of spas in Bali these days, very few of them offer Shiatsu massage. Why is that I wondered? Shiatsu is one of my favourite massages, preferring it over an oil massage. Occasionally if I see it on a spa menu I’m enticed to try it. In the end I’m usually disappointed as a poor portrayal of a pressure point massage. I once experienced a massage where the therapist pushed on my coccyx and woke up the next morning unable to walk because of the debilitating pain shooting down my right leg. Sciatica! It took a few weeks and several Chiropractic treatments before I could walk normally. I steer clear of untrustworthy places and treatments.

with a particular organ or psycho-physical function, but in its effect it extends beyond the activity of the organ. For example the liver meridian is associated with the nails, the muscles and tendons, the reproductive system, the emotion of anger, the eyes and the ability to plan. You should understand that if there is pain along the liver meridian it may not necessarily be the liver organ but the liver energy. When you press a point on a meridian, you are not only stimulating the local nerves and tissues, but influencing the flow of Ki throughout that meridian. Points near the ends of the meridians are often the most powerful in removing blocks or relieving pain along the course of that meridian. Eco Bali Spa

The Japanese form of massage called Shiatsu literally means “finger pressure”. It’s a unique combination of classical Oriental medical theory, whose history goes back to the beginnings of acupuncture 4000 years ago. Although its origins are ancient, it was given its name around the turn of the century. Even though Shiatsu means “finger pressure”, the hands, elbows and knees and other parts of the body are also used to apply pressure on the acupuncture points of the body. The techniques involve stretching, holding and leaning body weight into various parts of the recipient’s body to improve energy flow, blood circulation, flexibility and posture.

By chance I came across a great new spa in Seminyak called Eco Bali Spa. Seeing the board out f r o n t o ff e r i n g a 3 0 % discount on massages I was unable to resist the temptation and entered the charming garden entrance. Perusing the spa menu I spotted Shiatsu and decided this was worth trying. The spa is nicely decorated and comfortable. I was escorted up to the third level and ushered into a cozy booth. The therapist handed me a pair of pants and a shirt and asked me to change. Shiatsu uses no oil and is performed clothed. When she returned a few minutes later I was ready for 90 minutes of bliss.

Yin & Yang Yin and Yang are the two opposite yet complimentary aspects of existence, the shade and the light. Yin corresponds to that which is dark, cool, moist, soft, receptive, feminine and sinking. Yang represents light, hot, dry, hard, active, masculine and rising. The substance of the organs is yin yet the energy supplies them is yang. Where there is too much yin, there is a tendency to coldness, dampness and condensation into substance (such as the formation into tumors). With too much yang there is over activity and heat. When yin is deficient, even though the yang energy many be normal, there will be yang type symptoms, such as nervous excitability or insomnia. When yang is deficient, there will be tiredness, chilliness and poor circulation. Shiatsu will automatically help to balance the yin and yang. Regular treatments can improve your health. The Meridians The meridians are the channels along which the Ki flows through the body. The best known are the 12 meridians used in acupuncture. All meridians are bilateral and are associated

What is Shiatsu?

Shiatsu is based on the belief in a life force energy that sustains every activity of the body, mind and spirit, called Ki, which flows in connected channels or meridians throughout the body. Each meridian is linked to an organ, and its Ki can be contacted at certain points along its path – these are the acupuncture points known in Japanese as Tsubos. In normal health, a balanced condition exists, and the Ki flows smoothly along the meridians, like water through a garden hose, supplying and maintaining all parts of the body. But when the body has been weakened by immoderate lifestyle, emotional stress or injury, the Ki no longer flows smoothly, becoming deficient in areas and excessive in others, creating a state of dis-ease. Shiatsu can alleviate headaches, lower back and shoulder pain or specific problems.

Premiere Salon of the Nusa Dua, Bukit, Jimbaran Area

Lying face down, she began working on my feet, stretching my legs and gradually working her way up my legs to the back. I could feel the tension leaving my body. Next I was asked to lie on my side, this would allow the therapist to work on both inner and outer legs, buttocks, stretching the torso and working under the scapula. The best part was the points along the neck, gently but firmly pressed. Great for headaches and neck tension. Finally I was asked to lie face up where more leg work was done, then a good stomach massage, arms and a fabulous hand massage. The treatment came to a close with good neck pressure points and a soothing face and head massage. I felt so relaxed yet energized. It was a fabulous proper Shiatsu. I’ve returned for more treatments and realized that the therapists have been well trained. Get a 50% discount off Shiatsu til the end of September.

This Sporting Life RUGBY NEWS Karma Bali 10’s 2017 It is that time of year again, the Bali 10’s are on again, on the weekend of October 14 and 15. One of Bali’s oldest non government sports events, now in its 23rd year, the Bali 10’s, now known as Karma Bali 10’s following the announcement of Karma Resorts sponsorship of Bali Rugby Club in August this year, is growing year to year. Started in 1995 by a group of expats from Jakarta, after the first 10 years, the Bali 10’s was from 2005 to 2008 run by the IRFU (Indonesian Rugby Football Union, fore runner of today’s PRUI) under Steve Barber, in 2009 the then Bali Rugby Club President Rodney Holt took the helm of the event introducing the women’s division. In the more recent years under the guidance of Kurt Lovell, the Bali 10’s has grown into one of Asia largest if not the largest rugby 10’s events in Asia. This year is no different with forty teams entered .The big story is the twelve teams in the women’s division the largest field to date reflecting both the popularity the event and the growth of women’s rugby 7’s in the region. From Australia we have the Kalamunda Kweens, Nedlands and East Arnhem, the Cebu Ladies from Philippines, from Singapore the Bucks, the SOWRC Angels, PSD Warriors and FRC Dingoes from Malaysia and rounding it off the Papua Womens, Banteng and Bali’s own Chillettes from Indonesia.

Kukris, closer to home from Timor Leste we have the Dili Karau and from Indonesia, Jakarta Komodo’s, Papua. The Bali Rugby Club is defending local honour with two teams the Bali Chillies and the Chillies Development, reflecting the growth and development of Rugby on the island. Of special interest is the return of Singapore Cricket Club (SCC) ,who have been absent from the Bali 10’s since the 2002 Bombings.

The Bali Rugby Club thanks the Karma Resorts for their event wide support. Spectators are welcome to the Yoga Perkanthi football field in Jimbaran from 9am on Saturday 14th and Sunday 15th October where entrance is free and there is covered seating in the grandstand. You’ll be able to enjoy a cold Heinken beer, a steak burger from MooMoo’s Restaurant, pick up some merchandise from SPEAR Sportswear and buy a rugby ball from Gilbert. All are welcome.

SCC was one of the four clubs together with Taipei Baboons, ISCI and Hong Kong Football Club that lost players and supporters in the tragic events 15 years ago. SCC has entered both a vets and mens teams.

UPCOMING SPORTING EVENTS IN BALI 2017

In the Vets division, the legendary Potbellies from Dubai, from Australia we have the Jez Nez, Wests Old Boars and the Palmyra Pigs, from Singapore the Bucks and SCC, and finally from Indonesia, legends from yesteryear the Sumbawa Nagas and Jakarta Dino’s. The Jakarta Dino’s includes a number of luminaries from Indonesian rugby history, trying to relive their glory days. In the men’s division, from Australia we have the Kalamunda B u l l s , P e r t h B a y s w a t e r, S w a m p d o g s , A u b i g n y Barbarians,MahiMahi Allstars, Kimono Dragons, Waverly and Layaway Travel, whereas from the land of the long white cloud, New Zealand a couple of teams, Kapiti and Napier Old Boys. SOCIAL IMPAKT : A journey through Indonesia’s remote areas with a mission in mind, improving access to clean water. • Crowdfunding Campaign For Clean Drinking Water in Rural Bali Water is life and access to clean water is a human right! It is estimated that in Indonesia 34 million people out of 260 million people - that is 13% of the total- do not have access to clean drinking water. That is why the company Social Impakt created by Jeroen is preparing a crowdfunding campaign that will be launched on September 5th for 45 days and which aims to raise 50,000 euros to finance the purchase of 1,600 water filters for 3 villages and 25 schools in the area of Sidemen in East Bali. Back in 2011, I was Vice President for Europe, Middle East, and Africa for a British corporation, based in Dublin, led a business of 260 million USD with 7 factories and 800 employees, traveling always more. Suddenly I experienced a shift in me. I realized that I was helping companies making money, but I was not helping people. I realized there was a better way to use my business skills. I quit my job and I landed in Indonesia for some holidays, without exactly knowing what would be the next step. But with only one idea in mind, how could I help to make this world a better place ? I came across the alarming figures of children deaths caused by drinking unsafe water. In Indonesia alone, 20,000 children below 5 years old die every year from waterborne diseases. Diarrhea is the second cause of infant mortality in the world. My adventure started at this moment, I decided to focus on water. In 2014, inspired by this trip, I decided to create Social Impakt, a social business whose mission is to improve access to clean water in remote communities in Indonesia by supplying an affordable and eco-friendly water filtration technology. I met Mangku, to whom I owe a lot of my success today. He is my brother, my translator, my gateway to this new world. Over an 18 months period, Mangku and I were traveling all over east Bali with our car filled with water filters. We met more than 150 village leaders and visited more than 500 schools to introduce our water filter. To date, we have already positively impacted the lives of more than 16,000 people. We have also set up a network of 30 filter resellers in the villages, creating new income opportunities. Our crowdfunding campaign, if successful, will improve access to clean water in east Bali and that means improved health, improved income, reduced CO2 emissions and reduced plastic bottle use in these communities. It will positively impact 13,000 people. Do not hesitate to donate and share it to the world, it is for a good cause. Kulture Kid! By Vaughan Hatch

“Where you go – wash your eyes ya?” Some of the most “charming” Indonesian expressions are ones that use the word cuci which means ‘to wash’. Perhaps this is because Indonesians always ask each other (even people they’ve just met) if one has washed yet or not (“Sudah mandi?”). Perhaps not. Nonetheless, the word is part of some pretty funky expressions. For example, cuci mata that literally means ‘wash eyes’ means to check something out, colloquially suggestive of being on the hunt for someone good looking, normally referring to the opposite sex. So you can use this in a joking way when someone asks you what you’re going to do when you go out somewhere. Cuci gudang literally means to wash a building, which means ‘clearance sale’ and you’ll often see this in the windows of big retail stores. Cuci uang colloquially doesn’t mean to wash money but to money launder and is commonly featured in front page newspaper articles with corruption still rife all over the archipelago. If you wish to absolve yourself from guilt for something, you can just cuci tangan (wash hands) – this is also a common word to come across in political tabloids. Indonesia is a country that is currently experiencing an explosion of developed world ‘lifestyle’ diseases such as obesity and diabetes, the term cuci darah (‘wash blood’) is commonly heard, This means ‘dialysis’. In the digital age, it’s less common to develop film here but when I arrived in Bali in the 1990s I would often need to go to a photo shop to “wash film” (cuci pilem), meaning to develop prints – now this term totally makes sense. A very rare expression that has been pretty much relegated to dictionaries is cuci leher which translates as ‘wash neck’. This is the most bizarre of all of the cuci expressions as this one means ‘to eat well’, I guess meaning that you’ve filled your stomach so much that it reaches your neck!

Festival Fun Days are Back at Finns Get ready people, the next Food and Wine Festival is just around the corner. Free for everyone to attend it promises lashings of family flavoured fun where you can get your fill of food, free entertainment, liquid refreshments and retail therapy all in the one place on Friday October 6th from 3pm. Join everybody on the lawn and let the kids run free for a while or bounce off the walls on the jumping castles. Speaking of bouncing… bigger kids or those of us still young at heart might be keen to take part in the not-so-serious new sports sensation, Bubble Soccer! A hilarious hybrid, the game appears to be a crossbreed creation of billiards, bumper cars

and football and is seriously funny to see. Players’ upper bodies are encased in an inflated, ring shaped orb with only their lower limbs free to move. Zorbers form two teams and the concept of the game is much the same as soccer with a lot of bouncy contact! One of the best things about Bubble Soccer (Snookball if you prefer to call it), other than side splitting fun, is that you are protected from sharp elbows and hard surfaces by one huge air filled floatie! Cool off after your Bubble Soccer session with a few runs down the rides at Splash, however you’ll have to leave your Zorb ‘floatie’ behind as they’re NOT permitted on the slides, (as entertaining as that might be!) Splash is free for everybody from 3pm on Food and Wine Festival days at Finns so remember to bring your swimsuits. All of that hydro fun can build quite a thirst but with no less than ten food and beverage vendors as well as Bistro C’s Smoke

Take a stroll around the market and check out the wares on show from eighty market stall vendors. Find your next pair of active wear, sepeda motor seat covers, snacks, swimsuits, stylish threads, toys and tons more to tempt you to open your wallet. Even if you’re not up for any retail therapy (err…. like, as if!!!) sit back in a bean bag and enjoy the show! The evening is chock full of entertainment for everyone to enjoy with laid back tunes from acoustic guitarists, clowns and magicians to enthrall the kids and DJs and live music keeping the tunes rocking into the later hours and it’s all free! If you’d like to be a market stall vendor at the next Finns Food and Wine Festival get in quick and contact eka.andi@finnsrecclub.com for details. Biku Jln. Raya Petitenget, Kerobokan, made High Teas available to everyone. Most 5 star hotels do them but mainly for their house guests. Biku does them all day and in many forms, for all. Traditional, of course, is the original English version, cucumber sandwiches and all. Being in Bali they also added an Asian version and now have a breakfast one as well [pictured]. Croissants, Danish, Scones with jam and cream, Corn Cakes with avocado salsa, Herb Omelette with sausage and grilled tomato, Fruit Salad with yoghurt and the tea of your choice [or coffee]. Whilst this is only available in the mornings there is also an all day breakfast with many options such as their Soft Poached Eggs on chive and cheddar buttermilk scones, the Indian Lentil Crepes or the Middle-Eastern Shakshuka. Biku also offers a large a la carte menu with many popular dishes including those very Aussie meat pies. Don’t forget the traditional Strawberry Pavlova. The Tea Menu at Biku is larger than a wine list at a fine dining restaurant, they offer so many rare and aged teas.

Extrablatt is back! Great news for all those who like a good German meat meal from time to time, as I do! For many years it was just a small restaurant opposite what used to be Hotel Rumah Manis on Jln. Nakula, Legian. It has now re-opened 100 metres further down Nakula at an indoor-outdoor site that was for a very short time a Babi Guling restaurant. All the old favourites are on the new menu. My regular lunch time dishes were always the Hackbraten [meatloaf] or Geschnetzeltes [beef strips with mushrooms in a cream sauce], both served with that thin crunchy sliced pan-fried potato, very German style. Sometimes for variety the Leberkase [Bavarian style meat loaf with fried egg on top] or Rinderroulade mit Rotkraut [beef rouladen with red cabbage]. Any early morning stop [open from 9.00 a.m.] the Farmer Breakfast [fried potato with bacon, sausage, sauerkraut and egg] is essential. Great meat dishes and at very reasonable prices, every dish less than Rp.100,000 [incl. tax and service], many much less!

UNO has opened on Jln. Raya Ubud. It finally completes the demise of Ary’s Warung, the old site now split into two halves, White Orchid and UNO. 15 years ago the original Ary’s [before moving next door and going up-market] was one of the leading restaurants in Ubud. It then featured Chris Salans in the kitchen, his first stint in Ubud prior to opening Mozaic. Ary’s never seemed to recover from the Bali bombs after which they stopped hiring international chefs. UNO is the standard Italian with a large wood-fired pizza oven at the front and that endless array of pasta dishes.

Happy Chappy has now opened an outlet at Jakarta’s Soekarno–Hatta International Airport, in the new high tech Terminal 3, between Gates 12 & 13. Available are a range of dim sum and noodle dishes, freshly prepared, daily, in the central kitchen on the premises. A quick quality snack is the perfect way to fill in time during that wait for the always delayed flight. This group is expanding rapidly but in a controlled manner by the management team, headed by David Kearns who was head honcho in the launch of the successful Sarong and Mamasan restaurants years ago. A small Happy Chappy on Raya Ubud [close to Spice] is expected to open late October, and at Bali airport some time soon, more to follow in 2018.

Sakanaya has to be the leading wet fish shop in Bali. It shares a space with Ramen Boy, at the western end of Sunset Road, Seminyak, it is operated by the Ryoshi chain of restaurants. Sakanaya offers many ways of eating fish, Japanese style. Fresh seafood is packed in iced display cabinets in the inside air-conditioned area. Outside Sakanaya shares the terrace with Ramen Boy. Prawns can be black [tiger] or white [normal]. Either can be cooked for you battered, in breadcrumbs or poached Cajun style. They usually have up to 9 different varieties of fish, depending on the day’s availability, and you can order your fish as Sashimi, grilled, fried, battered, bread-crumbed or also poached Cajun style. The Sashimi is served as a small or large platter, the freshest [you can watch it being sliced] and the cheapest in Bali.

Som Chai has now finally opened on the site, Jln, Kerobokan, that once was REPLUBLIK 1945. Som Chai is all Thai with fine dining in the rear cavernous room [referred to as the Restaurant] and Will’s version of street food in the funky front section [referred to as the Lounge], which will hopefully become a party room late at night. Som Chai is a part of the Sarong Group featuring the kitchen talents of Will Meyrick. Legong is a survivor from the 90’s. Back then most restaurants in Bali were locally operated and served versions of the various cuisines according to whichever countries the local regular tourists emanated. A Bali dance performance or a ‘pirated’ movie showing on a large screen, were almost mandatory. Legong, at the southern end of Jln. Danau Tamblingan, Sanur, presents an enormous menu, a little bit of everything. There are 8 different soups to choose from including a Balinese fish soup, The Chicken with honey mustard an entree with a modern touch. The few Indonesian Chinese dishes include the ever popular Koloke [sweet and sour chicken] and Kung Pao. Seafood can be Lobster or the simpler Timbbugan be Pasih [steamed fish served in a coconut shell]. Local favourite Chicken in sweet soy and from Europe a standard Wiener Schnitzel. The Rijstaffel served Dutch style with all the small dishes presented at once, not staggered. C/R/G-16 August 17

Interesting, Innovative and Good! The amazing transformation of Bali dining has now come full cycle. 20 years ago it was hard to find anything above standard local food anywhere outside of the major hotels. Then the foreign chefs came, young ones more as a stepping stone to make their name somewhere else. Bali was creating world headlines and so then the established chefs followed, wanting to set up here.

at a very reasonable price. The salmon is layered with paper thin slices of zucchini and tomato, caramelised onion and sweet basil leaves, great balance!

Amongst the mains are two vegetarian dishes that are worth ordering by anyone. Tofu I usually find rather boring and tasteless. Even though I know that it is quite healthy I rarely order it. Not so this one, here it is cooked, with a mix of chopped vegetables, in a light coconut milk curry, The tofu cubes soak up the curry, and taste great.

The result was that many young Balinese chefs of the future were able to work with international chefs and learn much more than was possible in a local college. Those who were capable of absorbing and understanding are now doing their own thing, and doing it well!

Even more amazing is the Jackfruit Rendang. Jackfruit is an unusual fruit, the chunks of it almost have the texture of meat which is why it is often used as a meat substitute in vegetarian dishes. Soaked with the rending sauce you can actually believe that you are eating meat. And so healthy!

My latest discovery is a small restaurant in Kedewatan, Ulun Carik. Young Balinese chef Komang Juniantara is the king of the kitchen. He previously worked at Potato Head and Taksu. Coming form Taksu you would expect him to present some great vegetarian dishes. You will not be disappointed. A Prawn & Pomelo Salad heads the menu [pictured]. Chunks of fresh pomelo are mixed with avocado [guacamole], cherry tomato and slices of mango and prawn. A great start to any meal, a perfect palate cleanser. Other salads are Roasted Pumpkin and Lettuce or Chicken with romaine lettuce, apple and cucumber.

Other seafood options are Grilled Tuna with a mango salsa and Barramundi in a wine sauce. Two standard pasta dishes; Spaghetti Carbonara [using chicken bacon] and a Penne served with sliced chicken.

Breakfast is served from 8.00 a.m. It has a small but interesting menu. The Omelette is a big one [3 eggs] and is stuffed with cheese, mushroom, onion and spinach. Eggs Florentine is a poached egg on an English muffin with salmon, spinach and roasted tomato, topped with hollandaise sauce. The American touch is a pancake [plain, banana or chocolate]. For the locals there are noodles or fried rice. Both served with bacon [pork or chicken]. Ulun Carik even has a menu for the children, all the things that they like. Chicken Wings, Calamari Rings, Fish & Chips, Vegetarian Spring Rolls and Chicken Quesadilla, a sandwich wrapped in a tortilla.

Soups are a Roasted Pumpkin, flavoured with ginger and a Broccoli that is thick and creamy. Healthy broccoli, should be the no. 1 vegetable in every diet. Both soups come with two slabs of garlic toast. Pretend that you are at home and dunk the toast in the soup, tastes great!

Afternoon Tea, Indonesian style, amazing value for only Rp.50,000++. Your choice of coffee or tea with a plate of Finger Sandwich [cucumber, tomato and mozzarella cheese], Dadar Gulung [Balinese crepe stuffed with grated coconut and palm sugar] and a little Mango Pudding.

Chicken Cordon Bleu is on just about every menu in Bali. Here, a nice variation. A de-boned chicken leg is used [much more flavour than the breast]. It is stuffed with bacon and feta cheese. Slow-cooked, the chicken meat is so tender, the smoky taste of bacon a great contrast.

Ulun Carik has a relatively small menu? What a pleasant change. It tells you that the management actually understands how to run a restaurant by not opening with a ten page menu covering many different cuisines, here every dish is special.

Baked Salmon tops the seafood dishes, a large portion and

22 A Brief History of Bali by Willard A. Hanna and Tim Hannigan There are no shortages of excellent scholarly histories about Bali. Henk Schulte Nordholt’s heavy weight The Spell of Power and Adrian Vickers’ revisionist Bali: A Paradise Created are several that spring immediately to mind. These venerable tomes have accomplished their task well by presenting the island’s linear history from a systematic, academic perspective. A Brief History of Bali however is the first truly popular, comprehensive history behind the “paradise island of the Pacific” in a series of essays about an ancient society’s vulnerability-and resilience-in the modern world. It’s not an entirely new book, but a repackaged and updated version of Willard A. Hanna’s Bali Chronicles, published in 1976. Its new title positions it as a companion volume to Tim Hannigan’s A Brief History of Indonesia, also published by Tuttle. A new introduction has been added and the text was given a thoroughgoing new edit. This 2004 book is also without footnotes or an index but there is a bibliography. A three-part epilogue - about 20% of the book - has been added to bring Hannah’s previous narrative from the 1960s into the 21st century. Willard A. Hanna (1911-1993) worked for the American Universities Field Staff in Southeast Asia for more than two decades. Over the course of his career he prepared scores of field reports on Indonesian affairs. Hanna is the author of Indonesian Banda about the history of the Indonesian Spice Islands and Bali Profile about Bali during the Sukarno era Indonesia. Tim Hannigan wrote Raffles and the British Invasion of Java, which won the 2013 John Brooks Award; A Geek in Indonesia and Journey Through Indonesia. His features and travel articles appear regularly in Indonesian newspapers and magazines. The core of this new book is Bali’s history from 1800 up until modern times. Bali’s early history ends by the second chapter - only 49 pages, out of 280 pages, is devoted to the pre-1800 period. This lack of material is reflective of the challenges facing researchers of Indonesian history where original, verifiable primary sources are difficult to find. Even in those cases where records were kept, they were written on perishable lontar palm leaf manuscripts that seldom survive the ravages of the tropics. With the arrival European trading companies, meticulous records began to be kept. The development of Bali really takes off after the first Dutch fleet landed in 1597. Much of the island’s history thereafter is told through the accounts of officials and foreign traders. A strong emphasis is placed on Dutch influence, both the good and the bad - some of it reprehensibly bad. Between 1846 and 1908 the Dutch launched seven military expeditions in an effort to control the Balinese rajahs. In the face of resistance, these actions resulted in horrific puputan (ritual mass suicides). Yet one of the book’s fundamental arguments is that Bali until relatively recently is an island essentially stuck in 1600 A.D., with all the grandeur, theatrics, traditions, mannerisms and culture of that bygone era still persisting. From Bali’s history it’s also clear that whenever the island has been without stable, overarching governance it has had a tendency to lapse into political violence. The book’s voice abruptly changes with the start of the three epilogues - the last three chapters - a spirited and nostalgic portrayal of contemporary Bali and a sympathetic critique of some of Hannah’s assumptions and assertions. Hannigan has the novelist’s instinct for surprise and entertaining anecdotes pop up at every turn. He takes issue with the way that Hannah - an aging academic steeped in American establishment values – interprets the events of 1965. Hannigan gives a more realistic, updated account. The un-repackaged version also contains some old-fashioned

views from the mid-1970s. Hannah’s dismissal of the hippies of Kuta Beach, calling them “drifters, not drivers,” provide unintended humor and clearly date the book. Hannigan feels his comments are misplaced. Many of these “hippies” were actually inquisitive backpackers traveling the world. Hannah was also horrified that the number of tourists visiting Bali was projected to climb to 500,000 per year by the end of the last century. The old scholar would be epileptic at the current number of tourists that is more than ten times that number with more than 25% of the total Balinese workforce employed in the tourism sector. The last epilogue is a nuanced essay on the pluses and minuses of tourism, the effects influenced by many factors that result in different outcomes which mean different things to different people. A two-page two-tone reference map appears right after the content pages. Thirty vintage black and white photos and illustrations are included as well as 16 entirely new full color pages that visually update Hannah’s original history and are extensively and insightfully captioned. A two-page “Further Reading” list has been added which recommends primary sources of information. A formal 3-page bibliography, weighted with anthropological and academic histories, updates the bibliography in Bali Chronicles. A Brief History of Bali is not just a book about art and culture but rather an extended discussion on how cyclical historical events have affected a pristine island and its people. We learn that Bali is not just a perennially popular tourist destination, but also home to a fascinating people who have a long and dramatic history of interactions with foreigners. The sinews that bind together a society’s history are convoluted and confusing, and the book packs in a dense amount of facts, interpretations and analysis. Although both contributors are witty and easy to read, at times lyrical and eloquent, the only other distinction that they share is that the first four letters of their last names are identical. The content and writing style of a fuddy-duddy but brilliant old school academic and the insights and viewpoints of a hip modern historian make for a lively, well-informed study from two widely divergent perspectives and time periods. Together, they do a fine job of presenting Bali’s history as complex and multi-dimensional. In so doing, they demystify and rectify much conventional wisdom. The reader is thus able to look behind the glossy tourist view to discover that Bali is so much more than the cheap version presented to tourists. Definitely a must read for those interested in furthering one’s understanding of how Bali got to where it is today, why it is so different from other parts of Indonesia and how difficult it is becoming for Balinese to preserve their unique cultural identity amidst the financially-irresistible allure of tourism. A Brief History of Bali: Piracy, Slavery, Opium and Guns: The Story of an Island Paradise by Willard A. Hanna and Tim Hannigan, Tuttle Publishing 2016, ISBN 978-080-484-7315, dimensions 20 cm x 13 cm.

Say What? Question: About a year ago, my partner became mildly friendly with an exchange student when he was at university. Although they weren’t great friends, this person phoned last week to let him know that she is coming to Bali and asked if she could stay with us for a couple of weeks. While I wasn’t happy about him agreeing to this without asking my opinion first (we’ve discussed it since, and he has apologized), I have to admit that, if he had asked me, I would probably have said yes. The girl is only 22, and she doesn’t have a lot of money. She also doesn’t know anyone else here; so I feel it’s the right thing to do.

him email it to her and/or take her out for a coffee on her own when she first arrives. Explain to her that you will be needing alone time. Then, once she’s in your face and blabbing, be prepared to find it in yourself to excuse yourself.

The trouble is, she is arriving in 2 weeks, and I don’t like her. She isn’t a horrible person, but I find her annoying. Last time she stayed with us in Europe, she didn’t lift a finger to help out and seemed to expect dinner cooked for her every night. Other than in college, she has never lived outside her parents’ home and just doesn’t have roommate skills. I also found her difficult to have in my personal space. A few times I got home from work exhausted, and I’d end up listening to her talk for hours (literally) about things like how unfair her thesis mark was, or how incredibly drunk she got on the weekend. To make matters worse, I have been having a few emotional issues lately, which require that I really need my space.

He doesn’t shower daily, he brushes his teeth only 3-4 times per week, and he wears the same clothes for days on end. Yesterday I jokingly brought up the tooth-brushing thing, and he protested that he brushes “almost daily” and that his oral health is fine. He thinks his teeth and gums are healthy, but he hasn’t been to a dentist in years, and his gums are visibly receding and discolored. It’s revolting.

Can you suggest any strategies to deal with this situation? I don’t want her to feel unwelcome – after all, we said she could stay. But I also don’t want to do the full-on martyr complex act of feigning friendliness, doing everything for her, listening to her stories, and feeling resentful. Dr. ZZ: You are kind to let this girl stay with you and correct to realize in advance that you need to negotiate the terms of her stay. My suggestion is that, since your partner got you into this, you assign him to lay down the ground rules before she eats you out of house and home. Put details into an agreement about chores, meals, dishes, laundry, house rules, the length of her stay, etc., and her choice of a night of the week when she wants to cook dinner. Then, have

Question: My boyfriend and I are in our 30s and have been dating for about 2 years. Pretty much everything is great. He is kind, smart, generous and supportive; we have similar goals; sex is awesome. We’re talking about getting married and having kids, however, I have a problem with his personal hygiene. Some of his habits are disgusting.

His toilet bowl is brown on the inside, there is a layer of scum on practically every surface of his living space, and when he picks up after himself, nothing gets clean - everything looks greasy and dusty. I don’t know how to broach this subject with him. I love him and want to make a lifetime commitment to him, but I also want him to take care of his body and the home we’ll

eventually share. When we live together back home, we will not have a pembantu, and I don’t want to be solely responsible for all the housework - nor do I want his teeth to fall out. Am I a nagging harpy for wanting to change his grooming and household habits? How can I discuss this with him without making him feel attacked? Dr. ZZ: If you move in together “hoping” that this will naturally get better, it is apt to be a constant, draining source of conflict between you. Until you see some noticeable, sustained improvement in his self-care and housekeeping skills, don’t even contemplate sharing a home together. You need to speak up about your needs (gulp) and talk to him. There’s no way to bring up something so personal without the other person feeling criticized, but the least manipulative way to try to get someone to change their behavior is to be direct and extremely honest about what you want them to do. He may get defensive and upset – the story about what he thinks of his dental health is illustrative - so be prepared for an argument. Ask him directly to take a shower, to brush his teeth, to wash his clothes and to clean his house. Not in a ‘down the road when we’re married’ way, but from a placed of “I love you, and this behavior is not okay. Will you work on it, for me? Can we work on it together?” Let him know that you need him to bathe every day, to do laundry regularly, to clean his house better and to get onboard with his dental hygiene. If this leads to an onslaught of emotional roadblocks on his part, you may need him to seek therapy in order to resolve this.

One Car Too Far, One Tourist Too Many There are no words to describe Ubud in August. Well yes, there are: crowded, packed, crowded, depressing, jammed, crowded, dirty, blocked and crowded. Did I mention crowded? I know I’m being hypocritical. I was a tourist once myself, then I moved here and got all holy. But believe me, Ubud was never like this. Until about five years ago tourists came in seasons, you could actually walk on the sidewalks and a motorbike trip from the statue to Campuhan Bridge took seven minutes. Fast forward to traffic gridlock, chaos, exhaustion and irritation. Ubud increasingly resembles Kuta with its branded chain stores. Huge buses block the narrow streets, spewing exhaust. Bewildered tourists tumble through gaping holes in the shattered sidewalks as they try to avoid piles of garbage. It’s not pretty. Tourism is a double-edged sword, with the potential to bring prosperity and do great damage. This US$ 8 trillion industry is the largest employer on earth; one in every 11 people works in some dimension of tourism and travel.

Bali has tourism exhaustion. It’s happening all over the world. An article in the Guardian on August 7 describes how residents in Venice, Santorini and Barcelona are lashing back at the huge numbers of tourists clogging their streets and inflating their economies. Cities are buckling under pressure, but solutions are unclear. “As tourists and residents battle for supremacy of shared spaces, local authorities are uncomfortably in the middle. The tourism and travel sector is one of the largest employers in the world, with one new job created for every 30 new visitors to a destination - but at what cost to locals’ quality of life?” The national government has finally acknowledged that Ubud is in serious trouble. According to a story published September 1 in the Bali Express, the head of tourism in Gianyar was summoned to the capital to explain why Ubud’s international tourist ranking had dropped dramatically over the past year. Ubud’s image has suffered from its severe traffic jams, broken sidewalks and piles of garbage; the golden goose is very sick. But those who live here are not sanguine that the many levels of local and regional government will pull together to address these issues any time soon. Among the 32 desa adat (traditional villages) of greater Ubud, one has created its own solution. “Traffic is at crisis point,” says Kadek Gunarta, a highly respected member of Padang Tegal village. “We need regulation to establish community parking areas and compel people to build private garages. This will free the roads of parked vehicles and make it possible to use shuttles.” Tourism is a double-edged sword, with the potential to bring prosperity and do great damage.

According to a recent article in the Guardian a number of factors including open borders, leaps in technology from airplanes to the internet and the rise of the global middle class (think China) has put travel within reach of huge numbers of people for the first time. The World Economic Forum recorded 1.2 billion international arrivals last year - 46 million more than in 2015. Closer to home, Bali saw about 13 million tourist arrivals in 2016 - almost five million international and eight million domestic travelers. The government sees tourism as an easy moneymaker and a short cut to economic development. According to Indonesia Travel, last year Indonesia’s total tourism sector contributed 11% to the country’s GDP from total tourist spending in Indonesia thereby providing direct, indirect or or in related tourism jobs for almost 12 million people. “These significant achievements have strengthened Indonesia’s resolve to aim even higher by raising our goals and targets for 2017 to 15 million international arrivals - or a growth rate of 25%, and on to 20 million arrivals in 2019”, said Minister Arief Yahya. How about raising the standard and scope of the infrastructure to match those goals, Minister?

“The Ubud area provides 70 per cent of Gianyar’s GDP,” he points out. “Grassroots and government must work together to fix the traffic and parking issues.” Three years ago a team of Padang Tegal village members presented a meticulously researched and planned integrated traffic/parking solution for Ubud to the Gianyar government. It did not respond. Padang Tegal has already established a comprehensive and successful waste management program. Now it’s addressed parking and traffic within its village limits. Desa adat Padang Tegal is responsible for the Monkey Forest, which receives 2,000 - 3,000 visitors a day. The desa’s main artery is Jalan Hanoman, which is often jammed with traffic and parked motorbikes and cars. Many of the businesses have no parking for visitors and most of the parking spaces are taken up by employees. The decision was taken to create a central parking area for the buses visiting the Monkey Forest and the desa’s private vehicles. Residents would be given the choice of building a private garage on their land or paying to use the central parking area. Using tourist revenue, the desa began to accumulate parcels

of land east of the Monkey Forest. It now holds about seven hectares and hopes to double this in the years to come. Opening this month, the area will provide a community park, children’s playground, education centre and (perhaps most importantly) a central parking area for all the private vehicles in the village. It will also be the drop-off point for 25-seat tourist buses bringing visitors to the Monkey Forest, which will end the traffic jams at the current entrance to the forest. The project officially opened on September 7. There’s a large green area which could become a community garden. The paved, two kilometre long perimeter path is already being used by joggers. Many young trees have been planted to create a pleasant, shady environment. “This is a green space in perpetuity for the people of Padang Tagal,“ Dek told me proudly. “We’ve created it and the next generations will inherit and improve it.” “The desa adat has the authority to mandate and enforce rules about where residents can park,” says Dek, who is very knowledgeable and articulate about the complex social, political and infrastructure issues involved. He dreams of a pedestrian-friendly Ubud with shuttles and banks of electric bikes to move visitors around. “The problem can be solved at the village level with some planning. Each desa adat has empty land that could be used for central parking and tourist promotion for its attractions. It could be a place for the street drivers to be registered and meet passengers off the buses, charging fair and consistent fares. “This system has a lot of potential. But all the desa adat need government authority to create parking under a common framework, manage the income from parking and establish who is in charge. Parking isn’t just about cars and space, it’s also about safety and income management.” Once the roads are clear of parked vehicles there will be space for paid parking, but that has to be regulated at the Gianyar government level. All digits firmly crossed that the Padang Tegal pilot project will inspire the Gianyar government to work with all the desa adat of greater Ubud. Because we’re very near the edge and one more car may tip us over it.

I’ve had some requests in recent months from readers asking about social media and digital marketing tips. There is a huge amount of information available online about a wide range of marketing topics. But where to start? The sheer number of sites and experts who are out in the digital space can be confusing to sort through. So in the next few columns, I will focus on popular and highly rated marketing blogs and podcasts that can help if you’re setting up a business or non-profit, or just want to improve your marketing strategies in the digital age.

Have you heard this saying before? I am sure you have, but have YOU EXPERIENCED IT? Only once have I had any experience of drought conditions, and then it was restrictions to washing cars/ watering gardens/length of showers/ and reusing washing machine water! This was in Victoria, Australia when the level of the dams became dangerously low. And did we think we were hard done to, we sure did!! So I am going to let you in on a secret, yes a secret, here in this beautiful island where we live, with the smiling, happy people so many of them DO NOT have access to a water supply as we know it! Even in the 21st century many people cannot turn a tap on and enjoy a drink of water; have an indoor shower; somewhere to wash clothes or even a toilet; or go to the local shop and buy a 19 litre container of water. Things that so many of us take for granted. You may ask Why? As you may know or may not know, Indonesia consists of 17,508 – 18,306 islands. Of those, 8,844 are named and 922 are permanently inhabited with a population of over 245 million!! Bali is one of the main islands with a population as of 2014 of 4,225,000! So where does everyone live? Many live in the south of the island in the populous tourist areas, employed in tourism and all its related branches. But then so many people live in areas forgotten by governments and politicians because they are too hard to access. No roads or infrastructure is built for them in any shape or form. Where are these places? They are the mountain areas which cover a vast area of Bali, and where tourist rarely go because for them there is “nothing to do there”!!

WATER WATER EVERYWHERE, NOT A DROP TO DRINK!

PT. INTAN BALI INTERNATIONAL

C/CE/G-18 Jan. 17

The east coast of Bali in the Amed area, in the regency of Karangasem, many many people live high up in the mountains! The drive to Amed, about 3 hours from Sanur, depending on traffic conditions, through Candi Dasa, as far as the tourists venture, onto Amplapura then start climbing- up, up up! For the passenger, NOT the driver the view is spectacular, with ocean views, forest areas , crops growing, sights of “houses” far into the mountain sides, are worth a million times more than walking in congested streets in places like Kuta! (sorry Kuta !!) The roads are bend after sharp bend, dipping down, climbing up until finally you arrive at Celuk and turn right for Amed and the ocean! Amed sits nestled at the bottom of the mountains and the people who live there are either fishermen or work in tourism. The area extends down the coast line to Desa (village) Bunutan in the district of Abang, in the regency of Karangasem. Bunutan has another 10 sub villages or Banjars. Now this is where we find the people who live high in the mountains- about 15,000 people!! The area is very dry as it is in the rain shadow of the great Gunung Agung, the Great Mountain. The people who live there have virtually no access to schools, health clinics, doctors, or water!! They live in small huts usually 2 huts to a family with no washing facilities, no toilets, and no running water and some do not have electricity. They depend on their water from springs, high up in the hills, or wells near the coastal roads. So how do they get it? By walking hours each way to get 1 bucket of water and carry it back on their heads, women’s work! But the water is only for drinking and cooking. They do try and catch it during the rainy season but if it comes off their roofs can you imagine what else is collected!! So what happens when we do not get enough clean water to drink? You get sick, children get diarrhoea from infected water, kidney disease, and skin diseases. No water = no sanitation, no toilets, no hands washed, practically no bathing! Why do they not move? No money and no education, plus it is where their ancestors were born and died. Most are subsistence farmers, it is too dry to grow rice, only corn will grow and then only one crop a year, sometimes they plant pumpkin; or cassava, but for all their other needs they have to barter! They live on corn in one form or another, animals are a rarity, not often seen. So what can we do??? If I may quote from the book “Bali Water Project” by Richard Foss, talking to a Balinese man, who became very involved in the water projects Richard asked: “Why

doesn’t someone do something about their water problem?” and Ketut replied: “ Why don’t WE do something about the problem?” and from there the Bali water project evolved. Richard was involved with Rotary Club Bali Ubud, later to become Rotary Club Bali Ubud Sunset. He was the link with them, and funding came from other Rotary clubs in Bali, Colorado, Kansas, India, and The Rotary foundation. Between 2007 and 2009, 6 water projects were completed helping more than 3,000 people, some of the very poorest of families living far, far from roads or water. The projects were all gravity fed systems and continue to work to this day. Projects 7 – 15 followed, at the end of each completed project there is a handover ceremony, usually attended by the men of the Banjar. 2017 saw Rotary Club Bali Ubud Sunset complete a further project at Sombawong, where an additional spring was tapped and piped into an existing system of an earlier project. Plus, 3 more tanks were added to assist the Kelompok community, helping another 70 families, who had absolutely no community services. A further project is almost completed in Muntig , Karangasem district, where a government system failed soon after installation and nothing was done to repair it! The pipe work was repaired and some extra distribution tanks added. The handover ceremony will be taking place shortly. These projects have given so many people a much easier life, no more carrying water for hours on end daily; given them pride in looking after the systems once hand over takes place; a sense of worth and of being NOT FORGOTTEN! Rotary Club Bali Ubud Sunset is a small very friendly club in Ubud, meeting just twice a month, the 2nd and last Mondays 5.30 – 7PM; enjoying socialising, having a nice meal together, hearing news, learning from interesting speakers once a month, being able to become part of projects such as these, and fundraising to make them happen! Our main interests are water, health and education. For more information on our meetings, or how to become part of this worldwide organisation of friends, share any ideas you may have, even donate a little money or time, Click ontohttp:/rotarybaliubudsunset.org/ http:/www.facebook.com.groups/129279773753349 Written by Renee Heaton, member Rotary Club Bali Ubud Sunset. Local News Australia pays tribute to Perth artist and humanitarian John Fawcett Tributes are pouring in from Australia and overseas for a former Perth artist who gave the gift of sight to tens of thousands of Balinese. Celebrated humanitarian John Fawcett died on Saturday aged 85 after a stroke at a Perth hospital. He was a ceramicist and deputy director at Perth Technical College before spinal surgery in 1981 changed his life. A near-death experience on the operating table left him with medical problems and possible brain damage. He returned to a favourite place, Bali, two years after to recuperate and decided to stay. Moved by the poverty and lack of medical expertise on the island, Mr Fawcett set about giving back to the Balinese people. His Cleft Lip and Palate Program was set up in 1989 and the Mobile Eye Clinic for Cataract Surgery two years later. In 2000 the John Fawcett Foundation brought his projects together. Mr Fawcett’s remarkable life was the subject of a biography titled Water From the Moon, written by Scott Bevan in 1991. His work in Bali was portrayed in the 2008 documentary, God Made Them Blind. The John Fawcett Foundation announced his death yesterday. “What John achieved through his foundation has positively affected the lives of well over a million people,” the foundation said. “Widely known in Bali as “Dr John”, his assistance to those in less fortunate circumstances has earned him the love and respect of the Balinese population and also those in government circles. “With the programs moving offshore from Bali to other islands, the respect for John’s name and that of his foundation have expanded throughout Indonesia.” A cremation service will be held at Karrakata Cemetery from 2.30pm on Friday. Mr Fawcett’s ashes will then be flown to Bali for another ceremony. [The West Australian September 13, 2017] Decompression sickness likely caused Singapore doctor’s death in Bali dive She was an experienced diver who loved the outdoors and travelled abroad several times a year to pursue her passion of getting a closer look at marine life. But last Wednesday, Dr Wong Yu Yi, 48, died while diving in Bali. An autopsy found that she had suffered decompression sickness and it was the likely cause of death, said her husband, Dr Peng Yeong Pin. The condition, which can be fatal, is caused when pressure differences lead to gas bubbles forming in the blood. Dr Peng, 48, a hand surgeon, spoke to The Sunday Times at his wife’s wake yesterday. He said he flew to Indonesia with his father on the day of the accident, after his wife’s friend called him. Dr Wong was in Bali with her friends, Ms Yap Shu Mei, 49, and Ms Rini Astuti Wulandari, 27, according to a Bali Post report. She was diving with a group at an area called Blue Lagoon, in the eastern port town of Padangbai. At about 9.10am, they were diving at a depth of about 20m, when Dr Wong signaled for help. The dive leader led her to the water’s surface but she was unconscious by then. She was rushed to hospital and declared dead on arrival. “They tried cardiopulmonary resuscitation for quite a long time, but could not bring her back,” said Dr Peng, who flew back to Singapore on Friday. “She’s an experienced diver, with about a hundred dives in her log,” he said. He added that his wife went to Raja Ampat in Indonesia and the Red Sea in Egypt to dive, and recently came back from another trip to the Philippines in June. “This was her passion.” He said she was hoping to see sunfish in Bali this time. About 100 friends and relatives turned up to pay their respects at her wake yesterday. She leaves her husband and three children aged 11 to 19. Her body will be cremated tomorrow. Photo- Dr Wong Yu Yi (right) [The Straits Times September 10,2017] Man held over murder of Japanese couple in Bali Indonesian police have arrested a man over the murder of an elderly Japanese couple whose bodies were found burned beyond recognition in Bali. The scorched corpses of Hiroko Matsuba, 73, and Nurio Matsuba, 76, were discovered Sept. 4 by their Indonesian foster son in Jimbaran, a resort area in the southern part of the island. Police detained a 25-year-old Balinese man identified as Putu Astawa early Monday. Investigators, who are not looking for any other suspects, believe the slayings were a robbery gone wrong. “His motive in committing the murder is his debt. Putu owed 10 million rupiah ($750). He took a shortcut which was theft,” Bali police spokesman Hengky Widjaja said at a news conference. The police allege he tied up and gagged Hiroko Matsuba, who was killed first, before killing her husband. He allegedly used a knife he found at the front door. Later in the evening, Astawa returned to the house and set the bodies alight with gasoline and a lighter, the police alleged. Widjaja said Astawa entered the Matsubas’ home intending to steal money but “because the victims fought back, he murdered them.” The couple had lived in Bali for seven years, and Nurio Matsuba was a broker at a tuna export company, according to the police. Bali, a pocket of Hinduism in Muslim-majority Indonesia, is a popular tourist destination known for its tropical climate and palm-fringed beaches. Petty crime is common there, although grisly murders are rare. [The Japan Times September 18, 2017] Indonesia raises Bali volcano alert level for second time Indonesian officials have more than doubled the size of a no go zone around the Mount Agung volcano on the tourist island of Bali and raised its alert level for the second time in less than a week. The National Disaster Mitigation Agency said Monday that people should stay 6 kilometers (3.8 miles) from the crater, and up to 7.5 kilometers (4.7 miles) away to the north, southeast and south-southwest. It said the exclusion zone must be empty of all community activities and residents should be prepared to evacuate at short notice. The agency said there has been a continuing increase in seismic activity as well as visual observations of 50-meter (165-foot) -high blasts from the crater. Agung last erupted in 1963, killing 1,100 people and and hurling ash as high as 10 kilometers (16 miles). The surrounding Karangasem district, an area of about 840 square kilometers (324 square miles), has a population of 408,000. The mountain is about 72 kilometers (45 miles) to the northeast of the tourist hotspot of Kuta. [AP September 18, 2017] ‘Monkey selfie’ case A photographer whose camera was used by a monkey to take a selfie has won a two-year legal battle against an animal rights group about copyright over the image. Naruto, a rare crested macaque monkey who lives in the Tangkoko Reserve on the Indonesian island of Sulawesi, picked up David Slater’s camera and snapped the now-famous photo in 2011. Peta sued “on behalf” of the monkey in 2015, seeking financial control of the photographs for the benefit of Naruto. Judges in the US deemed the monkey was ineligible to hold copyright over the image.

macaques in Indonesia.

Lawyers for Mr Slater argued his company, Wildlife Personalities Ltd, owns worldwide commercial rights to the photos, including the selfie of the monkey’s toothy grin. Under a compromise, Mr Slater agreed to donate 25 per cent of any future revenue from the images to charities dedicated to protecting crested

Lawyers representing Peta and Mr Slater asked the US Court of Appeals to dismiss the case and throw out a lower-court decision that said animals cannot own copyrights. “Peta and David Slater agree that this case raises important, cutting-edge issues about expanding legal rights for non-human animals, a goal that they both support, and they will continue their respective work to achieve this goal,” Mr Slater and Peta said in a joint statement. US District Judge William Orrick said in a ruling in favour of Mr Slater last year that “while Congress and the President can extend the protection of law to animals as well as humans, there is no indication that they did so in the Copyright Act”. [Indonesia Expat September 18, 2017] Balinese Painting Maestro Nyoman Gunarsa Passes Away Balinese painting maestro Dr (HC) I Nyoman Gunarsa has passed away at the age of 73 in intensive care at the wing room of Sanglah General Hospital in Denpasar, Bali, on Sunday afternoon. Made Wija, an employee at the Nyoman Gunarsa Museum of Contemporary Art, said the painter had undergone intensive treatment since three days ago due to heart disease. According to him, Nyoman Gunarsa passed away at 11.30. The painter is now placed at funeral home on Jalan Raya Banda Number 1-Takmung, Angkan, Klungkung regency, or about 45 km east of Denpasar. The deceased left a wife named Indrawati Gunarsa, three children, and seven grandchildren. Made Wija explained that the family is still coordinating with the local cleric to determine duasa or good day to perform pengabenan or cremation for the former lecturer of Institut Seni Indonesia (ISI) Yogyakarta. The maestro who successfully held the exhibitions at the national and international level, had initially looked healthy, including on August 4, 2017 when he welcomed the arrival of President Joko Widodo and First Lady Iriana Joko Widodo to visit the Nyoman Gunarsa Museum of Indonesian Contemporary Art in the District of Klungkung, Bali. Nyoman Gunarsa, whose works were often inspired by Balinese folklore and the Hindu Dharma legend, built the museum around 1990 on a vast expanse of land with hundreds of collections of paintings, kris daggers, and other objects of art and history. When visiting the Gunarsa Museum, President Jokowi had mentioned he once invited Nyoman Gunarsa and his mother to the Presidential Palace on April 3, 2017. “He showed me a picture of a great painting titled “Jokowi Drinking Jamu.”To my surprise, Mr. Nyoman knew that the President likes to drink jamu herbs, and he also asked me to see the museum,” Made Wija said, as quoted by Antara. [Netral News September 10,2017] Bird flu confirmed in death of girl on Nusa Penida RadarBali.com reports that a confirmed case of Bird Flu (H5N1) has claimed a victim in Bali in Banjar Minggir in the Village of Batununggul on Nusa Penida. Officials from the Sanglah General Hospital and the Department of Health are refusing to identify the female victim infected with the virus. The victim died in the Nusa Indah isolation section of Denpasar’s main hospital. RadarBali also reports that a much-feared human-to-human transmission was suspected when one of the doctors treating the Bird Flu victim might be infected with the virus. Laboratory tests eventually confirmed that doctor was not infected with H5N1. Magic & Witchcraft: Part II by Bill Dalton If by some remote chance you haven’t noticed, the Balinese devote a major portion of their waking hours to an endless series of physically and financially exhausting purifications connected to spirits. The goal is to maintain the cosmic balance between good and evil and to appease forces that have caused an unexplainable illness, the failure of a family business or some other misfortune, events which are often ascribed to black magic. Excoriating rituals such as tra trance plays and animal blood sa sacrifices that placate the dark po powers play a huge role in the w world’s perception of Bali. Ra Rangda, the witch-heroine of th the Calon Arang story, and the Ke Kecak dance, have over the la last 100 years become the m most potent and memorable sy symbols of Bali’s magic power. In their everyday life, the Balinese always try to stay on the good side of all the forces. Any dangerous transitional event, natural disaster, calendrical shift or anniversary that occurs suddenly without explanation almost always calls for the ancestors to descend to earth, dispose of evil fiends or banish vermin from the fields. Among the range of rituals activities (yadnya) are rites for demons and the lower spirits involving parades to the sea to cleanse villages, special prayer days for the dead and nights of penance (sivaratri). Cockfighting was originally a temple ritual that symbolized blood spilled for the gods. I’ve seen entranced villagers, possessed by devils, bite off the heads of chickens and howl with terror in the confines of the Temple of the Dead across the small valley of rice terraces from my home in Tabanan. Phenomenologically speaking, the psychosocial experiences of a Balinese performer in dance is similar to someone with multiple personality disorder in the West. If a village has been visited by a calamity like the birth of twins of different sexes, a murder, an ugly road accident, an epidemic or flood, a priest needs to purify the ground to avert more trouble and strengthen the spiritual foundation of the village. Along with attending to sun gods, totemic gods, deer gods, secretaries to the gods, mythical turtles and market deities in the Bali Hindu religious pantheon is the care of the dark spirits that linger everywhere. When a Balinese chops down a tree, s/he first asks permission of the spirit (tonya) within. Once a year coconut trees are honored by dressing them in bright skirts and scarves. Old banyan trees are venerated by the placement of offerings (ngedjot) in altars among their aerial roots. Clay figures of the fire god Agni are put over kitchen hearths, bank clerks place pandanus-leaf offering trays on their desks and before a journey offerings are made to guarantee a safe passage. Elaborate purification ceremonies (mecaru) and blood sacrifices expunge leyak witches. In a ruse to drive out demons, the Balinese New Year (Nyepi) is a day of silence when no activity is allowed. A 15-day ceremony in 1991 in Ubud to straighten out the axis of the world was so complex that it took an IBM computer to run the event. Bali’s most important exorcism, taking place every 100 years, is the stupendous Eka Dasa Rudra. Involving tens of thousands of people, it is a ritual purification of the whole island to rid if of threatening and ever watchful demons and witches. In Bali’s performing arts - theatrical antidotes for black magic - the underworld is ever present. In wayang theater, the puppeteer (dalang) recites to himself various magic formulas to ensure success with his audience. During the sshadow play itself, the g greater positive deities ar placed on the right are an the lesser malevolent and go gods, demons and the un unholy graveyard kepuh tre festooned with evil tree bir birds and entrails are pla placed on the left. he trance dance Sanghyang Dedari, Dedari held he in time of trouble to The alleviate sickness or misfortune, is a celebrated shamanistic dance. Two little girls become possessed by the spirit of a god and dance on men’s shoulders. They never open their eyes, yet their performances coincide perfectly. The real dance is often closed to tourists; tourist versions are laughable shams. The Kecak, derived from the choral element of the Sanghyang Dedari, is a spell-binding spectacle created by Walter Spies in the early 1930s. It’s also called the “Monkey Dance” because of the savage eerie, hissing and moaning ape sounds made by the performers.

Priests and Shamans: Pedanda, Pemangku and Balian Priests purify people after an accident or illness, avert curses and bring people out of spells and trances. There are various kinds

of priests, the pedanda, or high priest, and the pemangku, or temple priest. A third kind of technical specialist, the sungguhu, is a low-caste priest whose duties are limited to propitiation of malignant buta and kala. Pemangku exorcise devils and remain in direct contact with the ancestors. Even the most indigent Balinese will make a great effort to hire his services to make sure that dead loved ones are properly ushered into the spiritual world. Pemangku should not be confused with balian, nor with bell ringers or scribe writers. Balian is the collective name for practitioners of Balinese traditional medicine. Using an amalgam of indigenous techniques, the word balian is oftentimes translated as ‘healer.’ However, not all Balinese healers are referred to as balian. Not all balian heal and not all healers are balian. Balian are often prominent members of the community who are consulted to solve problems both profane and spiritual. They have the potential both to both cure or cause, restore or disrupt. He or she is a consecrated person with some priestly functions who operates alongside the the exclusively religious figures. Many balian, including witch doctors who practice white or black magic, are said to possess strong mystical powers (kesaktian). These native practitioners are more than just folk healers. Their practices aim at restoring the balance between the body and the mind, the body and soul, between an individual and society and even between a community and a group of communities. No matter what type of healing they practice, all balian are influenced by the Bali Hindu religion that lies at the core of all treatments. There are actually hundreds of types of specialist balian, designated according to their predominant healing method: those who base their practice on the teachings of traditional palmleaf lontar manuscripts (balian usada); whose healing is a divinely bestowed gift (balian paica): who sell protective mantras and amulets (balian kebal); diviners (balian tenung); spirit mediums (balian taksu); balian who physically manipulate a patient’s body (balian apun); bone-setters (balian tulung). Traditionally a patient offers a balian whatever he or she is able to give in return for the consultation.

Demon Temples O Over the entrance of Ba Balinese temples are the co coarse, leering faces of m monsters (kala or bhoma) wi with splayed hands, tusklik like teeth and missing low lower jaws, which prevent evil characters from sl slipping into the sacred gr grounds. Two flanking gu guardian demons often st stand guard at both ends li b id M f i off B Balinese bridges. Mass profusions off esoteric and grotesque mythological creatures - vampires, ogres, one-eyed birds - glare out from temple friezes or adorn temple corners.

The dwelling place of underworld denizens is the Temple of the Dead, pura dalem, dedicated to Siwa the Destroyer. Before the deceased have been completely purified by cremation, their souls rest in the death temple. Its carved walls are decorated with gruesome depictions of the fate awaiting offenders who violate taboos or fail to observe customs. The pura dalem is also where the sacred Barong mask is stored. As most villages are built on a slope, the southern (kelod) end in the lowest part of the village

is also where the burial ground with its mournful kepuh tree are located, facing the sea, the dwelling place of the powers of the netherworld. A number of haunted temples in Bali are believed to be infused with black magic. Pura Pusering Jagat contains demonic catuhkaya figures with large open eyes and sneering mouths. Pura Dalem Penataran Ped, on Nusa Penida’s NE coast, was built to honor Ratu Gede Mecaling, the patron saint of all leyak. On the site of Pura Kebo Edan in rice fields south of Intaran is the gigantic “Pejeng Giant” statue dancing on a wide-eyed human corpse. Scholars maintain that this 3-m-high giant symbolizes Bhairava, a Tantric Buddhist manifestation of the Hindu god SiwaBhairava and his consort Durga in their more terrible aspects.

Herbal Medicines Like landslides or being struck by lightning, maladies are often thought to have supernatural causes. Witchcraft, neglect of rituals or the wrath of ancestors can lead to a “faulty illness.” Even a sick child is not innocent as he’s suffering for some crime he committed in a past life. If symptoms persist after seeking help from family members, neighbors and doctors, the patient employs the magico-medico skills of indigenous healers who administer plant concoctions in their healing practices. More often known as dukun, not balian, these men and women are particularly adept at healing people who have illnesses, diseases or mental disorders which are acute o or unusual. If possessed or magically poisoned, Balinese use healing formulas tto make themselves whole again. It’s believed that only a dukun is able to restore the body’s equilibrium through the traditional p philosophy of Tri Hita Karana (“the three sources of well-being”) w which promotes harmony among fellow human beings, nature a and god. Though it’s considered outside the expertise of Westernsstyle medicine to effect a cure, afflictions are more and more ttreated simultaneously with modern medicine. P Placing a slice of red onion on the fontanelle of an infant prevents tthe entry of a leyak who considers the smell highly offensive. The magical dadap plant drives away illness and keeps low spirits at bay during the ceremony for opening a new home. Bunga Padma dispels nightmares. In the villages one still sees amulets, talismans, tumbal (charms), dried umbilical cord and other magical objects hung around a baby to protect her from attack. Wearing garlic around the neck or ear is believed to ward off evil spirits. Sacred pools (Tampaksiring), hot springs (Toya Bungkah) and natural spas (Yeh Panas) are said to have magical curative powers.

Traditional medicines, found in Bali’s markets, are said to cure anything from nosebleeds to fainting spells. Rural families still grow their own herbs and plants and crush and knead (jamuan) medicinal pastes in a bowl or on a flat stone in the corner of the bale. The deep blue flowers of bunga celeng (Papilionaceae family), considered holy, are always seen at funeral offerings at cremation ceremonies. The Andong plant is often used to make offerings and is necessary spiritual protection in the marriage ceremony. Bunga ratna, seen dangling from small house altars, serve important religious and medicinal functions. Honor is bestowed on someone by simply placing a holy cempaka blossom in their ear.
