Rotary Club of Bali Lovina: Service Above Self Rotary is a global network of more than one million people: adults and youth, leaders and followers, and strangers who make new friendships, which seeks to build a world where people can join hands, without religion or caste considerations, and take action to make improvements in practical ways in the lives of their communities. The Rotary Club of Bali Lovina (RCBL) is one such group that has made an effort to improve the minds and bodies of young people in the province of Buleleng, North Bali. We are a small club at this time, perhaps one of the smallest in the world. But our members have not let this limitation to stop it from investing in the future of the students who reside in our focus area. “Alone we can do so little; together we can do so much” wrote Helen Keller (1880-1968), the renowned author, political activist and lecturer, who was blind and deaf from the age of 19 months. This simple truth represents for us the philosophy of Rotary founder Paul Harris (1868-1947) who established the Rotary Club of Chicago in 1905, and which has grown to a large and well-managed international social service agency working for humanity in 200 countries. He believed that professionals with diverse backgrounds could exchange ideas, form meaningful, lifelong friendships, and give back to their communities.

C/G/G-6 Dec. 17

Helen Keller once wrote, “Of all the senses, sight must be the most delightful.” As if inspired by Helen Keller, the Rotary Club of Bali Lovina has focused for the past four to five years on two projects that would assuredly have received Ms. Keller’s blessings: improving the eyesight of students at the junior and senior high school levels by providing them with eyeglasses; we also promote literacy by providing books, setting up libraries, and providing library training, for schools in the Buleleng regency. The membership of RCBL requires the support of others who are not a part of our geographical community, and has received thousands of dollars from many organizations, primarily other larger, better funded Rotary clubs, from around the world who believe the work that we do meets the high standards and expectations of Rotary International, the primary networking extension of the Rotary concept. The RCBL also works closely with like-minded organizations within our own service area. We have been greatly assisted by a local yayasan, Peduli Sesama Philanthropic Work (www.pedulisesamaphilanthropicwork. org/) in identifying schools that can benefit from our service. At the present time, we are indebted to Bali Top Optical (http://balitopoptical. com/ and on Facebook) which shares our “vision” of getting eyeglasses into the hands of needing students by providing them, at no cost, professional eye examinations and eyeglass frames, while RCBL provides for the cost of the lens for these glasses. Under this arrangement, the RCBL is providing eyeglasses to 200 students each year.

C/G/I-28 Feb 18

Again, as if inspired by Helen Keller’s philosophy, “The only thing worse than being blind is having sight but no vision,” the RCBL has also received substantial financial support for the literacy and library program from other Rotary clubs and foundations from around the world. We have invested our time and resources into 11 schools (currently) and are performing follow-up training activities to these schools so that the investment produces the greatest benefit to children. During these workshops and training activities, teachers and librarians learn how to actively develop a love of reading and better reading comprehension skills among students as well as how to manage their libraries better. Incidently, Helen Keller was no stranger to Rotary International. She was first introduced to Rotary through an article she wrote for the March 1938 issue of The Rotarian, the flagship magazine of Rotary International. She also addressed Rotary International at its 1957 convention in Switzerland. For more information about the Rotary Club of Bali Lovina (the only Rotary Club in all of Buleleng!) please visit our website at www.jepunsegara.com/rotaryclubbalilovina. Please come along and join us next time you’re in Lovina! We meet on every other Wednesday at the Bayu Mantra Hotel, Lovina/Anturan. CANGGU NEWS

Petitenget to Pererenan If you live, work, have a business or just have some exciting news about this area then we want to hear from you!

New Home in the ‘Gu Means More Scope to Develop, Connect & Succeed A recent move to Canggu for island based NGO, Stella’s Child has resulted in an unexpected outpouring of community support. In an effort to facilitate the opening of this enterprising charity’s new youth centre, an incredible band of volunteers offering skills ranging from design and decorating to construction and cleaning joined forces to transform their vibrant new centre for its opening on Sunday February 18th. The move to the ‘Gu signals continued growth and success for this not-for-profit youth based initiative and founder, Tim Cameron is not looking back. A veteran of 25 years in finance and education in the US, Cameron created Stella’s Child after a 2013 trip around South East Asia opened his eyes wide to the disparities apparent in education across these developing countries. The yayasan’s name is a loving nod to his late mother and her humanitarian efforts in education and with disabled youth. After selling up in the States and leaving his corporate world far behind, Tim moved to Bali to set up Stella’s Child - his desire to create a program whereby youth from disadvantaged backgrounds might have access to educational and training opportunities, enabling them to find promising and gainful employment and career paths. Originally in conjunction with Bali’s Widhya Asih Foundation and through training and mentoring via their Life Skills, Entrepreneurship and First Employ programs, Stella’s Child helps to motivate these young people to break the perpetuating cycle of poverty that may have prevailed through earlier generations, helping youth to fulfil their ambitions and realise their dreams to become a success. The idea is not about giving them a job, but enabling and furnishing them with the skills to find their own! With a business minded approach to positive youth development, Stella’s Child works closely with local companies, getting a feel for the human resources they require, then filling these needs by matching them with talented youth who possess the skills and enthusiasm to fit the bill! As well as receiving invaluable on the job training, work and life skills, these up and coming youngsters are further enriched and equipped with supplementary skills the likes of administration, budgeting, management, marketing and communication via support from their knowledgeable mentors in the Stella’s Child’s Entrepreneur Program. Since the program’s first foray into the local business community in 2015, the number of students and sponsors has increased exponentially with more local businesses

coming on board to work with Stella’s Child every year. However, the continued success of this kind of innovative program still relies heavily on community support and donations. Imagine, the price of your lunch for two at a local Canggu cafe might be enough to supply an aspiring child with crucial learning materials for an entire year, or the freight you fork out for a night on the town may be sufficient to secure a teen with the long-term career planning and communication skills they

need to break the cycle of poverty….. Food for thought indeed! Fundraising is such a crucial factor in Stella’s Child’s success and as a part of their training, education and development, students in the program are heavily involved in the creation, planning and organising of fundraisers such as their Love Our Earth stall at the Stones Hotel on March 4th. The market day extends the opportunity for Stella’s children to exercise their business acumen as well as the chance to showcase their own environmentally aware clothing brand they have created from the ground up! Following on from this, March 5th presents a star studded fundraising opportunity in conjunction with Petitenget club Sea Vu Play, as Stella’s Child hosts their Academy Awards gala. An event with an edge, this FUNdraiser invites guests to celebrate the glitz and glam of the movies as the morning awards telecast streams live from the States. A day to dress up, dine out and support a great cause with Stella’s children the stars of the show! Support for forward thinking youth initiatives the likes of Stella’s Child, not only assists these young minds in achieving their goals today, but affords them opportunity and ensures they are properly equipped to thrive in the future. The key to making the most of this opportunity - education! If you’d like more details regarding sponsorship, becoming involved with the foundation as a volunteer or business or information regarding future Stella’s Child events, email them at: info@stellaschild.org or telephone: +62 8786 2468 665

Finns Fresh Sushi - Sake It To Me! So you fancy a bit of sushi eh? Well splash out the sake because Finns Beach Club has just opened their new Sushi Bar and the food is fab! Now you might wonder why a popular Bali beach club would incorporate a sushi bar into their already successful mix? Well, what could be better than to tuck into a dish of the freshest fish while having the benefit of a beachfront view and a sake or two! Maybe the idea of eating raw fish did not appeal to as many several years ago, but with the raw food movement in full swing and the masses making a change toward clean and healthy eating, sushi is indeed in vogue and Finns Beach Club have just the crew to make the most of the island’s freshest seafood and transform it into a mix of amazing flavours. With experience in Japanese cuisine for over 15 years, the team of chefs come well versed in the delicate art of sushi. Training under the expert guide of a Japanese chef for a number of years then spending considerable time honing their culinary skills in 5 star hotels in the Cayman Islands and Ritz Carlton, Nusa Dua, these guys are no strangers to sashimi, sushi or tempura and it shows! Finns Sushi Bar’s dedicated menu is comprehensive without being overwhelming. Unlike many sushi restaurants, it does not offer pages and pages of options to pour over, but a succinct selection of flavoursome and fresh food done well. Starters include light and fresh favourites for sharing such as edamame, gyoza and yakitori, as well as the must try menu item for fresh fish lovers - the Uzusukuri. Carpaccio style white fish is sliced impossibly thin, with flavours of the star ingredient accentuated by a delicately infused, truffle ponzu

sauce. Ask the waitstaff about the possibility of adding some fresh wasabi (the real stuff mind you, not the grass green, horseradish paste we are all familiar with) and you are in for a visual feast as well as a chance to treat your tastebuds and spare the sinuses! The wasabi (a root imported from Japan) is actually grated at your table using a traditional shark skin board. A bamboo brush carefully collects the residue of fresh paste and, after waiting five minutes for the complete kick of the wasabi to develop, just add it to your fish and experience the flavour sensation. Fresh wasabi still packs a punch. It’s strong and hot but without the lasting burn of horseradish and thankfully, minus an assault on your sinuses! But you need to indulge quickly, as the full, somewhat herbaceous flavours of this fresh condiment disappear after twenty minutes! The Signature Rolls at Finns Sushi Bar are almost too pretty to eat. Whether you’re a slave to social media or not, you’ll want to snap a pic of this before you sample it, however, one taste of their Dragon Roll and you’ll soon forgo any artistic appreciation for the sake of a screaming tummy! Portions are generous and prices reasonable but freshness and flavour are the real winners of each dish. It gets even better! The food menu is complemented by a beverage list that includes a Sake selection comprehensive enough to make any serious souse stand up and say “Kanpai!” Having a distinctive style, sake may not be to everyone’s taste but I’ll bet my bento box you’ll really love Finns sake inspired cocktails! If you like your martinis, why not try their

Saketini - a mix of chilled vodka, sake and cucumber. Cool as! All sakes are available by the bottle, with a decent selection also available by the glass. Open for lunch and dinner, drop in and get your Finns sushi fix day or night. If you’d prefer to soak up some sun at the same time, simply grab a day bed and kick back with one of their Bento Boxes. Filled with a variety of tasters, these are a great way to sample some of the Sushi Bar menu from your beach towel. Take away options are also available. Even if your skills with a set of chopsticks is a little suspect, be sure to stop by soon and try Finns sushi, where fresh seafood is certainly the order of the day!

Cleansing for Optimal Health Getting older is not always easy, especially when you begin to become aware of your health declining. My digestion hasn’t been very good for quite some time and I also started having trouble with elimination. My insomnia has also worsened over the years and I seemed to get stuck at the same weight even though I considered myself to be a healthy eater. My skin had

also changed, loosing its youthful glow to be replaced by some brown spots that were the result of either too much time in the sun as a kid or my liver wasn’t functioning at its optimum capacity. I realized that I had to take action, so this year I made a resolution to get back to being totally healthy and strong. In the past I’ve made this same resolution perhaps for 10 years in a row or longer, never succeeding to see it through. But this year something inside of me said, “You’ve got to do this, Michele. It’s time to really prioritize your own wellbeing.” For some people this might be an easy choice to make. Of course we all want to be healthy and feel great, but to actually do what’s needed to get there is a whole other thing – it takes a complete mind shift. I often see this with my own clients. They really want to change their negative patterns, but it’s really challenging for them to change their bad habits when they have been doing this for so many years. We are all mostly the same when it comes to living our lives – we are creatures of habit. No one likes getting out of their comfort zones which have provided us with a comfortably numb life that has not pushed us to choose something greater. It is only when we are faced with a crisis that we are motivated to make the necessary changes. I didn’t want to wait for the crisis, because I knew it was just around the corner. My desire to be healthy and well was such a strong motivation, that this was the impetus for me starting off 2018 with a fire in my belly that couldn’t be snuffed out. I did some research and found several Pilates studios and within minutes I was on the phone with a lovely Indonesian woman who was offering a special package for private lessons. I

immediately said yes. I knew that it would be a long journey to get back into shape, but I also knew that I had to start somewhere. To date I’ve had eight lessons thus far and I can feel my body changing; my curves are getting more delineated and my stomach is flattening. I can also feel my core getting stronger with each lesson. It’s exciting to see the progress but I am also learning so much about my body and what’s required to be truly healthy and strong. I have spent so much time nurturing my Soul and Mind, but I had neglected my body. It has paid a big price but no more. In addition to strengthening my physical body, I also knew I had to do an internal overhaul. Thus, I booked a 7 day detox program on Phuket so I could have time alone to focus on

For Sale; 5 Maginon, IPC100AC surveillance cameras. New. Just brought them from Germany. 1/5” Megapixel, 9 infrared-LEDs. Complete with cables. Never used. Was Euro 60 each. Will sell for 55 Euro (fix). Please contact Michael 081 2395 1444. [072] C/He/G-20 Dec. 17

cleansing all the toxins in my body and learn more about nutrition. I was lucky to find a very professional program that is run by a lovely woman named Michelle, who is from the UK. Through the questionnaires that I answered about my general health, they were able to clearly determine what was going on in my body and which program would suit me best. I agreed that the juice detox would be good for me. This was combined with daily colonics, a variety of cleansing herbs, infrared sauna, inflammation pod treatments and daily massages. I don’t think I have ever had that much pampering in my entire life. I felt truly blessed that I could take this time out for myself and knew that I really needed it. While I really didn’t enjoy the colonics, I could feel the benefit of cleaning out all of my intestines and colon. It amazed me how much impacted waste can be stored in our gut and colon! I was just glad to eliminate it all so that hopefully my system can now function well. I initially decided to do the detox program for my health, but a side benefit was losing 6 kilos. So by the time I left I felt much lighter in both body and mind. When we detox it effects all aspects of our beings. As we eliminate all the old and toxic waste in our body, our state of mind can completely transform. For some, this can be like turning on the light in a dark room. For the first time one begins to see things totally different. This is our opportunity to let go of unhealthy thought patterns or habits that no longer server us. So how do we keep our resolve in the face of every day life which can be all consuming or overwhelming? Every day I renew my promise to myself to fully commit to maintaining my health and wellbeing. Every day I remember how crappy I felt when I used to eat junk food or sugary foods and I compare this to how I feel right now. Every day I think of my two beautiful boys who are still young and need me to be around for a lot longer, not as a sick and weak mom, but as a healthy and strong mom who they can enjoy hiking or swimming with. What is your motivation to be truly healthy? I hope you will do whatever it takes to live a healthy and fulfilling life.

THE BIG “C” - Cancer Screening In our last edition we discussed the increasing rates of cancer and which kinds of cancer were at the top of the hit parade. Now lets look at how cancer screening and early detection can improve the outcomes of many of these cancers. Skin Cancer While regular screening is not recommended for all people, those at risk should seek and annual check at a skin cancerscreening center. People at high risk for skin cancer include those with: • fair skin, a tendency to burn rather than tan, freckles, light eye colour, light or red hair colour; • increased numbers of unusual moles (dysplastic naevi); • depressed immune systems; • a family history of melanoma in a first degree relative; and • previous melanoma or non-melanoma skin cancers • those who have had high levels of sun exposure (water sports, outdoors employment etc). Breast cancer All women should know how their breasts normally look and feel. Self-breast examination should be conducted every month and any breast changes reported to a health care provider right away. Some women who may high risk (2 or more relatives with cancer of the breasts, ovaries, uterus or prostate) or certain other factors – should be screened with MRIs along with mammograms. In general: • Women ages 40 to 44 should have the choice to start annual breast cancer screening with mammograms (x-rays of the breast) if they wish to do so. • Women age 45 to 54 should get mammograms every year. • Women 55 and older should switch to mammograms every 2 years, or can continue yearly screening. Ultrasound scan may also be recommended as an extra diagnostic tool. Colon and rectal cancer and polyps Starting at age 50, both men and women should have a fecal blood test screening. If this test is positive a colonoscopy should be performed. This is a good basic screening test, however, in advanced medical facilities other more advanced less invasive tests may be offered.

If you are at high risk of colon cancer based on family history or other factors, you may need to be screened using a different schedule. Cervical cancer • Cervical cancer testing should start 2 years after sexual activity commences. • Women between the ages of 21 and 29 should have a Pap test done every 3 years. HPV testing should not be used in this age group unless it’s needed after an abnormal Pap test result. • Women between the ages of 30 and 65 should have a Pap test plus an HPV test done every 5 years. This is the preferred approach, but it’s OK to have a Pap test alone every 3 years. • Women over age 65 who have had regular cervical cancer testing in the past 10 years with normal results should not be tested for cervical cancer. Once testing is stopped, it should not be started again. Women with a history of a serious cervical pre-cancer should continue to be tested for at least 20 years after that diagnosis, even if testing goes past age 65. • A woman who has had her uterus and cervix removed (a total hysterectomy) for reasons not related to cervical cancer and who has no history of cervical cancer or serious pre-cancer should not be tested. • All women who have been vaccinated against HPV should still follow the screening recommendations for their age groups. Endometrial (uterine) cancer All women at the time of menopause, should be told about the risks and symptoms of endometrial cancer. Women should report any unexpected vaginal bleeding or spotting to their doctors. Lung cancer Routine screening is generally not recommended unless you are hi-risk. Screening might be right for you if you are all of the following: • 55 to 74 years of age • Have at least a 30 pack-year smoking history AND are either still smoking or have quit within the last 15 years (A pack-year is the number of cigarette packs smoked each day multiplied by the number of years a person has

smoked. Someone who smoked a pack of cigarettes per day for 30 years has a 30 pack-year smoking history, as does someone who smoked 2 packs a day for 15 years.) OR if you have lived with a heavy smoker in a closed living or working space. Prostate cancer Starting at age 50, men should talk to a health care provider about their risk factors and which testing is the right choice for them. If you are African American or have a father or brother who had prostate cancer before age 65, you should get a PSA blood test with or without a rectal exam. How often you’re tested will depend on your PSA level. Take control of your health, and help reduce your cancer risk. • Stay away from all forms of tobacco. • Get to and stay at a healthy weight. • Get moving with regular physical activity. • Eat healthy with plenty of fruits and vegetables. • Limit how much alcohol you drink (if you drink at all). • Protect your skin. • Know yourself, your family history, and your risks. • Get regular check-ups and cancer screening tests. Remember - many of these cancers have no symptoms in the early stages and early detection of any of these cancers will always improve the outcome of any treatment ☺

OR, WHITE CRANE SILAT

CAMP CLARITY Who doesn’t want clarity in their lives? Our zany musician, singer and all round creative friend Norma Jean Belenky is inviting all of us women to an Ubud summer camp for grown ups. And it’s not just a fun vacation she’s offering – we’ll come home with clarity! Norma Jean wants each participant to return to her life excited, with intent, new tools, resources and skills to take the leap between the life she has, and the one she truly wants.Camp Clarity will run from April 29-May 5 – 7 days, all-inclusive, at a private luxury villa, with daily yoga and meditation, workshops, cleansing and healing ceremonies, and authentic Balinese experiences. It will be a gathering point for extraordinary women from around the world. Find out more at www.joincampclarity.com. Spaces from $US1750 per person, and there’s a $50 discount for anyone who uses the code UBUDNEWS, so pass on the info to a friend. FEELING FESTIVE IN 2018? It’s been fabulous to be a part of the growth of the various festivals here in Ubud over the past decade. In other parts of the world, even people who’ve never been to Indonesia will say; “Bali; isn’t that where that amazing writers festival is held?” or “The ‘spirit festival’ concept was invented in Ubud, right?” And I’ve met many jazz musicians and lovers from as far apart as Africa and Australia - who are keen to come to Ubud for the jazz.So as we move past the worry of a possible volcanic eruption, doing our best to help the locals recover their lives and livelihoods, let’s invite all our friends to join us for an Ubud festival this year. Besides being fun, well-managed festivals offer a load of economic and social benefits to a community. Google to learn more: Bali Spirit Festival, April 2-8; Ubud Food Festival, April 13-15; Ubud Village Jazz Festival, August 1011; Ubud Writers and Readers Festival, October 24-28. LOCAVOR GOES JAKARTA

Alternatively – if learning a Cuban dance in Ubud seems a little weird (it’s not, but I get it) – here’s an opportunity to pursue a distinctive Indonesian martial art. White Crane Silat (Silat Bangau Putih) is the signature self-defence art of the Persatuan Gerak Badan (PG) School in Bogor, Java. A mix of classic northern Shaolinstyle kung fu with Indonesian pencak silat, WCS is uses low, wide, flowing movements, acrobatic jumps, rolls, and falls, and free-form sparring.

The aim is to combine these into choreograph long movements that train balance, timing, and grace, each movement associated with an animal, plant or legendary figure. Silat White Crane involves partner work of a different kind, including self-defence and sparring, which enhances sensitivity and spatial awareness. Also at Yoga Barn, on Monday, Wednesday and Friday, from 9.30-10.30am. Book online or walk in. SOME PHONE CALL! This is how many a great Ubud business begins. In 2005, Bridges B a l i restaurant co-founder Claude Chouinard asked the owners of the old, fairly dilapidated Bridge Café, to partner with him on a new concept for the place. At first they declined, so he forgot it and focused on other projects.Four years later - on his birthday in 2009 - they rang him, to see if he was still interested. It took a while, but by December 2010, they reopened on that perfect site, as Bridges Bali.Claude heads a thriving professional team, now employing more than 80 people including a full-time sommelier. And most importantly, Bridges Bali is a “giving back” place, hosting events and exhibitions to raise funds for many charities, most recently the huge fundraising dinner for post-eruption recovery, where 100% of every 500,000rp dinner ticket was donated.

How extraordinary! An Ubud restaurant that’s so popular that a team of chefs shoots over to Jakarta for a two week “pop-up”.Early this year, Ubud’s amazing Locavore chefs found a Jakarta restaurant owner willing to ‘lend’ his beautiful restaurant – the lovely Emilie French Restaurant. So they quickly sent two sous chefs over to find out what ingredients were good, available and in season in Ibu Kota, and then created a stunner 7-course Locavore tasting What’s next? An event room on the lower level, menu around it. Already rave reviews, with the last service on Sunday completely secluded and overlooking both March 3. I doubt me there’ll be an empty seat, but call Locavore on +62 garden and the river below! It will be a perfect 361 977 733 – at worst, you can make an advance booking for next trip! space for weddings, receptions and private parties of about 40-50 people. Yup, so many EVENING SALSA WITH MADEIRA Ubud successes start something like that. “Have some madeira, m’dear!” Nope, not an old-fashioned drink but an absolutely brilliant dance teacher, Pak Sugeng Madeira, who is the perfect person to help you ignite those Latin rhythms! Many of my Ubud visitors have learnt with Madeira over the years, and now he’s running a group class at Yoga Barn every Monday evening, from 5:30-7pm. Salsa is a social, energetic partner and solo dance, so participants get a chance to meet new people and learn the fundamentals, while exploring rhythm, connection and musicality. Learning a partner dance is always a confidence booster – and believe it or not, the quiet, methodical guys end up in front, because they know about turning up, class after class, until they get it right and they can dance professionally with absolutely anyone! Lots of dynamic movements and positive emotions to help you connect with yourself and others, get rid of stress and have fun socializing. Book a class at www.yogabarn.com, or at YB reception.

17 Mary Lou Pavlovic: Indonesia’s Prison Art

Artist Mary Lou Pavlovic lives and works between Bali and Australia. In 2015, she completed her PhD at Monash University, Melbourne about how beauty was associated with progressive politics in contemporary visual arts and how her studio work was influenced by Balinese culture. In 2015, after visiting men and women incarcerated in Indonesian jails, she helped establish an art program in the Bangli jail, as prisoners stated they had little constructive activity. Workshops were initiated which involved the artistic interactions of Indonesian and Australian artists with prisoners in Indonesian jails. Pavolvic’s work is exclusively represented in Bali by Tony Raka Art Gallery. When did the program for prison art start? The first program at Bangli jail began soon after prisoner executions reemerged in Indonesia in 2015. But I also started to work with a group in Yogyakarta. While in prison there, Indonesian artist Angki Purbandono established the Prison Art Program (PAPS) in 2013. This group of inmates and ex-inmates exhibited their art inside and outside of jail. How did the upcoming exhibition come about? I won an Apexart Gallery New York competition in 2017 to create an exhibition about artists and prisoners in Bali. We ran a series of workshops to create work for the exhibition in 2017/18. Collectively, our focus was the socially beneficial roles played by the prisoner as artist and the artist as prisoner. Our workshops highlighted the role of aesthetics in socially-engaged exhibitions. There are both obvious and not so obvious political messages in the works that are on display. What inspired you and other artists to establish the exhibition? Our main aim is to bring aspects of prison life to public view. The function of contemporary prisons worldwide is to make prisoners social outsiders, largely invisible to most citizens. The modern prison is hidden away. Cloistering prisoners creates a criminal class separate from the working classes - for prisons are largely filled with the poor. Authorities profit politically by exploiting prisoners to promote government ideologies, and economically, as large sums are associated with criminalizing activities such as sex work and drug use. Prisons are also the ultimate form of surveillance. The unknown life inside of prison instills the fear of jail for those outside of it. The threat of incarceration enables authorities to maintain power and control over citizens, who become in the longer term accustomed to being relentlessly monitored by disciplinary institutions we find everywhere in our daily lives. Tell me more about the upcoming exhibition. The exhibition Dipping in the Kool Aid will be held from March 4th to March 31st at Tony Raka Gallery in Mas. The opening reception will take place on March 3rd. The exhibit will feature works by Indonesian and Australian artists and prisoners/ex-prisoners of Indonesian jails. The artworks have been selected from workshops held predominantly at Klungkung and Bangli in 2017/18, as well as other studio works. It’s an odd name. Where did you get it? Dipping in the Kool Aid is old American jail slang for entering uninvited into conversation. While neither the locale nor the artists represented are American, the phrase has been adopted by our exhibition to pay tribute to the Javanese tradition of pasemon. Under the authoritarian Suharto New Order regime that spanned 1966-1998, artists and journalists used an indirect form of satire to criticize those in power. Pasemon deftly corrects without embarrassing authority by saying one thing but meaning something else. By criticizing without “scratching any wounds,” it allows the freedom to express differing opinions. Can you describe some of the works that will be on display? Djunaidi Kenyut, who invited prisoners to make self-portraits by etching their own facial features onto blank postcard-size

mirrors, will invite viewers to do the same in the hopes that they will empathize with the prisoners. Imam Sucahyo presents a series of wayang wayangan made with prisoners. In an ongoing project called “Rotations,” Elizabeth Gower invited prisoners to contribute to her 365 fragile paper collages of which the prisoners made about 30 out of discarded packaging from the prison cafe. A small paper and clay sculpture by Herman Yoseph Dhyas Aries Utomo (a.k.a. Komeng) represents a tough guy with a suitcase full of money that depicts the machismo of prison economics. Are there any participating prisoners who feel that their sentences were overly harsh?

Angki Purbandono was incarcerated for one year in Yogyakarta in 2013 for smoking marijuana. In refusing to accept his imprisonment, Angki famously declared instead that he was undertaking an artist’s residency. He formed the Prison Art Program while a prisoner in Narcotics Prison Class 2A for marijuana offences. With members comprising visual art students, a dog walker and the front man for the hard-core band Serigala Malam, the group considers it a violation of human rights to be imprisoned for using marijuana. Together they present memories of prison and testimonies to the psychologically dark, violent spaces they inhabited and the resilience they discovered in creating art. Do only male prisoners produce art? Absolutely not! Men and women prisoners and even guards participate in prison art programs. I ran a “Preserving Life” workshop in 2017 with female prisoners at Klungkung prison. We created a large wall work featuring meaningful personal items such as Christmas decorations as well as flowers and deceased butterflies that were donated by the local butterfly park. Our aim was to preserve life, the driving motivator for the entire project. The artwork, ‘Out of the Box’ consists of photographs taken inside the jail by prison officer Yhoga Aditya Ruswanto who worked under artist Angki Purbandono’s instruction.

How does producing art help prisoners? Creating art not only alleviates prisoner seclusion and relieves stress and boredom but in our exhibition audiences are invited to connect with inmates and their innovative works and experience an interaction beyond the social stigmas that define prison life. This connection can benefit audiences as much as inmates. For example, Mustika Rubli, the accomplished singing group from Bangli jail, has been granted special permission to sing in a performance at Dipping in the Kool Aid exhibition’s public program. What statement do you feel the prisoners and artists are making in the exhibition?

C/BT/I-03 Jan 18

All the values expressed stand in stark contrast to certain aspects of the treatment of prisoners in this country. In these poetic, complex and autonomous works is a desire to preserve life. Each work is an antidote to state violence and collectively they create an environment in which art claims its authority over imprisonment. The formally discreet, aesthetic structure of pasemon has created a space for the prisoners and participating artists in which political positions are clarified without directly offending anyone.

Green Curtains ‘Dear Dr. Kris, I read your reply to a query in the Bali Advertiser. I’m also wanting to know the name of this vine which hangs down. I attach two photos. I don’t think it is any of your suggestions. I’ve never seen it flower. I live in Thailand and want to plant it so that it will hang down and screen some rooms from the sun. Would be grateful for a reply if you know what it is. Thanks Julia’ Vines, climbers and creepers are versatile plants great for screening unsightly areas of the garden, beautifying bare walls, covering fences and even for shading windows and cooling the home. I love the photo that you sent in, it’s a beautiful plant for growing vertically or hanging over structures. You were so so close to identifying the common name yourself without even knowing it! It really must have been right on the tip of your tongue.

intervention but will grow thicker with annual pruning. It will grow well in an average soil which is a plus, but it’s best feature is that it just looks so good cascading down structures. Left on its own the vine can grow up to 30 feet or 10 metres in length. The stems will climb up, over and then cascade beautifully down any wall or structure. It has small wispy ‘offwhite’ flowers that appear in bunches but primarily it is a foliage plant grown for its desirable green curtain, surely the name already gave it away. ‘Green curtains’ grown for effect are a visually pleasing ever evolving work of art, shadows and shapes cast on internal spaces will change throughout the day as the sun traverses and over time as the plant grows.

The garden is outside but the effect comes inside. They also have the benefit of screening out the You say that you would like to grow the plant so that it will sun if heat is an hang down and screen rooms from the sun, in effect a ‘green issue. The green curtain is an environmentally responsible decision, The curtain creeper is both versatile and vigorous, that’s why so you can also feel ‘smug’ about yourself at the same time. it’s a mainstay plant of many landscapers within the vertical In warm climates it will block sunlight lowering room gardening world. It will stand alone with minimal human temperatures, reducing the reliance on AC, saving on power

bills and reducing C02 emissions. The curtain creeper is suitable for a location where it can fill in a large space, and should not be planted where it is likely to become a nuisance due to its wild vigorous nature. It is suited to growing in large pots and planters which is advisable if you wish to contain it, otherwise plant it in the ground and watch it run. Once it takes root it will be difficult to eradicate. This widely cultivated plant often forms rampant infestations whether in the wild or even in urban areas on unkempt lots. The overall movement of ‘green architecture’ in cities has the dual purpose of utility and aesthetics. Green buildings are popping up all over the place, with green walls and hanging gardens to take advantage of the insulation effect, being cooler in summer yet warmer in winter. Taking it a step further, fruits and vegetables can also be incorporated into the mix so that you now have insulating walls of food. Passionfruit vines, chokos, cucumbers, rock melons, bitter melons, beans etc can easily be grown up walls or overhead so that fruit hangs down. Once you start looking into it, the possibilities are literally endless. Even unlikely candidates such as spinach, lettuce and other greens can be grown externally on modular green walls. It beats a dull grey wall hands down any day of the week. Vines, climbers and creepers or any sort of vertical greenery can transform a conglomeration of bricks into a beautiful living structure. When I think of vertical gardens the first thing that comes to mind are the mysterious Hanging Gardens of Babylon which are fabled to have cascaded down from the famous city in times of antiquity. They were probably grown for both beauty and utility and it’s good to see that we are returning to our roots, even though it took a few thousand years, better late than never eh?

24 Mission Paws’ible Brings Hope to Bali Dogs Bali dogs have roamed the island for thousands of years. According to the Bali Animal Welfare Association (BAWA), around 90 percent of Bali dogs have a place to which they belong, be it a family or a warung. This, however, does not always mean that they are taken care of in the Western sense of the word. It is difficult to escape the fact that many dogs on the island are malnourished, sick or have not been sterilized. One organization is trying to change this by providing rehabilitation, and homes for sick, abandoned and injured dogs and puppies. Mission Paws’ible aims to educate people about the importance of vaccinations and sterilization, and provides support to individuals who rescue, rehabilitate, and re-home dogs and puppies. “Mission Paws’ible was born in 2015 as an idea that gradually grew into a community. Its main focus is to connect like minded people, animal lovers and rescuers to work together to save lives through collaboration and support,” says the organization’s founder Prue Barber. “We face a lot of daily challenges, such as lack of funds to support vaccinations, sterilization and general health checks for dogs. The biggest challenge, however, is finding them the homes they deserve. There are so many abandoned dogs and puppies, and only so many people who can take them in.”

For Sale; 1 Set CCTV + monitor + 4 camera new IDR 8000K. Sale IDR 4000K. Contact 0361 733219 or (store@linge-mimpimanis. com) for the pic.

Alternatively, if you are on the island for a specific period of time or just cannot commit to adopting a dog, you can help by fostering an adult dog or a puppy. The commitment time is up to each individual, and all the medical costs are covered by Mission Paws’ible. The organization works with a number of vets across the island depending on the geographic location of the animal and their situation to ensure that the dogs are healthy and ready for their new home. “Depending on the case, we may need full diagnostic tests such as blood tests, X-rays, ultrasounds, which can only be done at a few clinics. We also use mobile vets for everyday treatments such as vaccinations, worming and sterilization,” Prue says. “Basically, all we ask of our foster carers is to love, care for and keep the dog safe as they go through their vaccinations or push through any underlying non-contagious conditions such as mange, whilst we work on their adoption campaign and a happy home tale.” If you would like to learn more about Mission Paws’ible, visit: https://missionpawsible.org

Foster homes provide a stable environment where the dogs and puppies can learn to love and trust, making them ready for adoption. This is where puppies are socialized with other dogs, receive toilet and leash training, and learn simple commands. Foster homes are not only beneficial for each animal’s social development but give them more of a chance of finding a forever home. “Foster homes save lives. There is no other way to explain it. The more adaptable dogs are to humans and their lifestyle, the more likely they are to be adopted.”

Mission Paws’ible is always on a lookout for potential foster carers and those looking to adopt. And if you chose to adopt from one of the reputable dog rescue organizations, such as Mission Paws’ible, you will not only get a healthy, fully vaccinated and a happy dog, you save a life that would usually be overlooked. “If you live in Bali permanently, and are looking for a loving and committed relationship, please choose to adopt and not shop for your new best friend. But only commit if you are here for the long haul,” Prue says.

Prue says that on average she receives around 30 or 40 requests for advice or support each week. The most common calls for help include inquiries about skin conditions and ill health of adult dogs, puppies that have been dumped, and people wanting to ‘give’ their dogs to the organization. While Mission Paws’ible does not have an official shelter, the organization helps individuals to re-home rescued animals, or uses a foster care network to take care of abandoned dogs before they are found a more permanent home. “Our main mission is to support individuals to rescue, rehabilitate and rehome the dogs themselves rather than burden the already over-exhausted animal welfare network. We have found that 90% of people asking for our help have responded positively to our guidance,” she says. “At the end of the day, no one person or group is responsible for the stray population of dogs on the island, but we can all do our bit to help. Many hands make light work.”

While Prue says that there is no easy way to rehome an animal, time, persistence, and a positive approach usually work to ensure that the rescued dogs get the best chance at finding their forever human. Mission Paws’ible uses the power of Facebook community groups to get their rescued dogs in front of potential adopters. The organization ensures that the dogs on their books have great photos that truly capture their personality, beauty and strengths, as well as positive descriptions of their qualities and what kind of home they need. “Having a pet is like any other relationship, it needs to work both ways - for the animal and the person. We like to know what people are looking for so we can ‘mutt match’ the right personality and temperament to their lifestyle. This is imperative to create a lasting and happy relationship. We always ask potential adopters to answer a questionnaire to ensure compatibility between the human and the canine before they even meet.”

The Frugal Balinist ✱ Travel Mask. Been to Jakarta, Chiang Mai or Siem Reap lately? Face masks are now essential for travel in the unhealthy polluted cities of S.E. Asia as well around the Mt. Agung danger zone. Extreme air pollution can damage the mucosa and lead to a bacterial infection. High quality masks are available online. Lazada sells a pack of 8 of the very best N95 Smart Valve Face Mask for around Rp100,000. The N95 stops PM2.5 particles that can travel deep into the lungs. Simpler ones are less effective and too hot for walking any farther than 500 meters.

✱ Spectacular savings! At the wholesale plastic goods shops (Toko Grosir Plastik) along Denpasar’s Jl. Imam Bonjol, huge savings can be made on plastic wares compared with what they would cost in your local supermarket or convenience store. Examples: 8 rolls of packing tape at Rp8000/roll (normally Rp12,000-Rp14,000/roll); 50 plastic bags (90 cm X 100 cm) for Rp45,000 (usually Rp17,000 for packet of ten); 100 plastic bags (60 cm X 80 cm) for Rp55,000 (normally Rp12,000 for packet of ten).

✱ Get Ready! Nyepi is among those rarest of Balinese festivals when Bali residents actually save money, not just spend mucho dinero as is the case with Galungan and Odalan. If you’re going to be staying in a hotel for Nyepi, food is often served cold and is expensive. To save money, take sandwiches, baked goods, cheese, fruit and instant noodles; also a thermos or electric kettle to boil water. Book hotel rooms now. Stock up on enough food, snacks and beverages at least 2 days before Nyepi. Buy to last 3 days (one day before, Nyepi day itself and the day after). Shops and markets will be closed and you can’t go anywhere. Replenish candles, flashlight batteries, re-chargeable indoor lamps. Charge gadgets and prepare curtains/blankets to block light from windows. On the eve of Nyepi there will be drunken revelry and gambling but ogoh-ogoh parades will be banned in urban areas because of possible disruptions set off by opposing parties in the upcoming gubernatorial election in June. Break out the stargazing charts! Totally absent of light pollution, the sparkling and resplendent night sky over the Southern Hemisphere on Nyepi is the clearest of the whole year.

Update

DD Warung, as reported in a previous column, has re-opened, It is now larger and far more presentable, on Jln.Danau Poso, Sanur. Its original location was in an unattractive old style warung. It was a tribute to the quality and value of the excellent Thai food served there that it was so popular. In a much more professional location it has now returned. I have since tried the food at the new location I am very pleased to report that the menu, and food quality, is exactly the same. This is Thai food as served in Thai homes, no ‘dumbing down’ for western tastes. Some of the dishes served here have never been seen before in Bali. A good example is Yum Pla Duk Foo. Many years ago at Darley Street Thai in Sydney their chef, David Thompson, explained to me how it was prepared. Cold water fish is dropped into very hot oil. The result is that it explodes, as if shredded. It is served with Som Tum on top [green mango salad] a perfect match. Thai food is all about contrast and balance and DD Waring always seems to get that right. Another family special on the menu here is their Krao Pao [a favourite breakfast for many and what Thai women cook for their visiting grandchildren]. In Thailand it is usually minced pork, outside of Thailand it is more often chicken, wok fried with green beans, onion, chilli and more chilli, on top is an egg flash-fried Thai style [crisp crunchy white, soft yolk]. For this dish, [pictured], there is no shame to say medium for the chilli. However it is a common misnomer that all Thai dishes use Chilli, they do not. Such is the case with Kai Med Ma Muang [Chicken Cashew], just many healthy vegetables [broccoli, tomato, baby corn, onion and fungus] as well as the chicken strips and cashew nuts.

Moana is on Jln. Pamtai Batu Bolong in Canggu. It calls itself a ‘fish eatery’, a strange title but I guess that is what it really is. The owner is Polynesian and the fish is prepared in that style. Many of the dishes feature raw fish, even in some of the salads. In fact the Poke Bowl is a raw fish salad that originated in Hawaii. Tuna can be just seared in a Carpaccio [Italian, Polynesian or just International?] but the cooked versions are never overcooked which is a pleasant change. There are also many grilled fish dishes and that normally includes an excellent Mahi Mahi. Pearl is a French restaurant in a small boutique hotel of the same name, at the end of a

small gang off what used to be called Jln. Double Six [Jln. Arjuna] Open for dinner only it has survived, in an almost hidden location, for almost 9 years, enough proof that it is doing something very special. The small but well thought out menu has a surprising number of interesting dishes for this area of Bali. The Lobster Bisque is very French. Ravioli stuffed with eggplant caviar and goat cheese with a thyme sauce is an interesting vegetarian option. The Beef Carpaccio could be called French - Italian as the finely sliced beef is combined with shaved foie gras, poached fig and black truffle powder. Star of the mains is the Lamb Shank; unusually it is de-boned, in mustard with fried garlic eggplant and potato gratin. For me there is an old favourtite, rarely seen in Bali, the Crepinette, which is a ball of minced chicken and pork that has been combined with mushroom and garlic. The French desserts are usually special. If you fancy a Crème Brulee, it comes in three flavours. The Soft Gingerbread is rosemary flavoured or you can just order a tasting plate.

Queen’s Tandoor has long been Bali’s most respected Indian restaurant, not only are the chefs imported from India but so are the chillis and other spices. Authentic it is! Located on Jln. Raya Seminyak it is always busy, a sure sign that the value for money is there. With a 14 year track record it has nothing more to prove. With a growing regular clientele they have a number of special set menus for those who want to dine early [between 5.00 and 7.00 p.m.] any day of the week. Great value! Three different styles, depending on your taste and how hungry you are. The Biryani can be chicken, lamb, fish or vegetable, and is served with plain raita. Express Curry can also be chicken, lamb, fish or vegetable and is with a half serve of rice and one roti of your choice. Perhaps you just want a quick snack, choose from Dosa Sambhar, Dahl Chawal, Curd Rice & Rasam, Chollay Batura, Puri Aloo or Misi Roti Saag. Whichever menu you choose you will be coming back for more.

Cocoon, Jln. Double Six at Blue Ocean Beach, Legian is not a ‘steakhouse’ though it probably serves more steaks every week than any other restaurant in Bali. Last year they began a Thursday Steak Night, it proved to be so popular that they then added a Tuesday Steak Night. Why the success? They offer a selection of imported steaks at quite amazing prices. Porterhouse, Tenderloin and Scotch Fillet are some of the special cuts available. All prices at Cocoon are now shown as net of taxes and service charge, the way most tourists want it. 250gm Tenderloin is only Rp. 200,000 Net, whilst a whopping 400 gm of Porterhouse is priced at only Rp. 240,000 Net. A monster 450gm Rib Eye is served on the bone @ Rp. 300,000, as is the 500gm T Bone. The steaks are all served with salad, chips and onion rings. A glass of Plaga Cabernet Sauvignon to go with the steak is only Rp. 50,000 Net [Rp. 250,000 for a bottle]. I recently tried their Eye Fillet, which is always available on the normal daily menu. I can not recall ever enjoying a better steak. The monster steak knife [almost a Kris] just sliced through the meat as if it was butter, yet being so tender did not retract from the taste. With so many other mains at Cocoon also being attractively priced, I doubt if there is a better value for money quality restaurant in Bali. 30 The inspiration for this dish comes from Eat Me in Bangkok. It was called Spring Onion Soup and was so simple and yet surprising in presentation and taste. You can make the spring onion soup a day or two before. I highly recommend the torch ginger flower sambal to go with it.

Deconstructed Gazpacho with Sambal Matah Makes 2 servings Ingredients: - 1 Tbl. sherry vinegar or balsamic vinegar - 2 Tbl. extra virgin olive oil - salt to taste - 1 cup ripe baby tomatoes, halved - 1 cup cucumber, cut into 1 cm cubes - 1 cup roasted bell peppers, cut into strips (I like to use a variety of colors) - 1 cup coriander leaves, torn by hand - 1 cup chilled spring onion soup – see the recipe below - salt and freshly ground pepper to taste - optional, but delicious: 1 recipe of sambal matah – the sambal with the torch ginger flower. See the recipe below. Directions: In a small bowl, whisk together the vinegar, oil, and salt. Set aside. In a medium sized bowl combine the tomato halves, the cubed cucumber, and the pepper slices. Toss this well and then add the torn coriander leaves. Toss gently. On a wide low bowl or a plate with a rim, swirl on 1 Tbl. of the vinegar-oil mixture. Repeat with another bowl or plate. Divide the tomato mixture between the two plates. Fill a 1 cup pitcher with the chilled spring onion soup. When ready to serve let each diner pour the soup over their deconstructed gazpacho. Top with a grinding of black pepper and a spoonful of sambal matah. Spring Onion Soup

Ingredients: - 2 Tbl. olive oil - 2 cloves of garlic, sliced - 2 cups spring onions, both the white and green parts, chopped - 1 cup potato, cubed - salt to taste - 3 cups vegetable soup stock or water - 1/2 tsp. freshly ground black pepper - 2 tsp. lemon juice Directions: Heat the olive oil in a medium sized pot. When it’s hot add the garlic and sauté for one minute or until it starts to brown. Add the spring onion pieces and stir cooking for 1 minute longer. Now add the potato cubes and the salt and cook a minute longer giving it a good stir. Add the stock and bring the soup to a boil. Lower the heat and simmer until the potatoes are thoroughly cooked and easily pierced by a knife. Remove the soup from the heat. After the soup as cooled about 10 minutes use a stick blender or a regular blender to puree the soup. If it’s too thick add a little water until it’s the consistence of honey. Just before serving add the freshly ground pepper and the lemon juice. Chill the soup. You can store in the fridge for several days. Sambal Matah

32 Help! My dog has swallowed a toy (sock, large bone etc.)! Certain breeds of dog are prone to swallowing objects that they shouldn’t. In veterinary terms we call such objects foreign bodies. There are 2 main risks when a dog swallows a ‘foreign body’; if it is a sharp one such as a large fragment of bone or a nail then there is the risk of perforating the stomach/intestinal wall, and if it is a large one then there is the risk of gastrointestinal obstruction. Both of these are life-threatening scenarios that require urgent veterinary attention. At Sunset Vet we see several cases of ‘foreign bodies’ a week, usually affecting Golden Retrievers, Labradors and Pitbulls. These are breeds that love to carry things in their mouths, so some foreign body cases may be a genuine case of accidental swallowing. Most are probably intentional though, with hunger, playfulness and general over exuberance contributing factors. We rarely see foreign bodies in Bali Dogs, who seem to be too savvy to succumb to such avoidable situations! Bear in mind that bone is a biological tissue and when eaten in small pieces, can actually be broken down and digested in the dog’s stomach. It is when dogs get overzealous when chewing bones that they bite off more than they can chew. It is also important to remember that raw, meaty bones are very healthy for dogs, as they are natural carnivores and bones are not only highly nutritious but also the chewing mechanism helps keep their teeth clean. For this reason bones are often referred to as ‘nature’s toothbrush’. For safety you should only give your dog RAW bones (never cooked, otherwise they can splinter causing sharp fragments) and also ideally long bones such as the humerus or femur of pigs/cows/sheep. Ideally not bones that have been cut, as this can also leave sharp edges. At Sunset Vet we sell frozen pig bones, which are a safe size and shape for your pet. A foreign body can get stuck anywhere from the mouth to the rectum. When the dog is reluctant to eat or drink and is drooling a lot, the first place to check is in the mouth, both at the back and also under the tongue. Bits of sticks or bones can break off and get wedged across the dog’s throat, and can also penetrate the soft mucosa under the dog’s tongue. Sometimes the penetrating wound is difficult to see, and we have even seen cases where the original entry point has healed over and the trapped piece of wood is embedded and causing a painful abscess. For such cases, exploration with some forceps under general anesthesia is the only solution. The esophagus is also a place that foreign bodies can get stuck, one of the most common being pork knuckles as these bits of bone are a size that is tempting for the dog to swallow whole. A dog with an esophageal foreign body will usually be retching unproductively and since the dog will be in considerable discomfort, these cases are usually brought to the vet quickly. The solution depends on where in the esophagus the object is trapped and the size/shape of it. An Xray is taken to see exactly where it is, and whether it can be removed via an endoscope, or whether surgery is required. Occasionally at Sunset Vet we see fishhooks that have been swallowed, sometimes with fishing line attached. Remarkably these can sometimes pass out in the poop by themselves, but if your dog is unlucky the hook can catch on to the mucosa and either endoscopy and/or surgery under general anesthesia will be indicated. Once the foreign body is in the stomach, the symptoms may not be as marked and these ones are a little more of a diagnostic challenge. Dogs may not be retching or vomiting, they

may simply be uncomfortable or off their food. Remember that only radio-opaque materials show up white on an xray (metal and bone for example), whilst plastic or rubber often appears the same shade of grey as the stomach and the food inside it. In cases where we suspect there may be a stomach foreign body, which is not obvious on plain Xray, vets will perform a barium contrast series. Barium is soft, silvery alkaline earth metal which being a metal is very radioopaque, it is given in the form barium sulphate and helps line the walls of the stomach and intestines so that any abnormalities are clearly demarcated. A barium series involves mixing the barium sulphate into some canned dog food, feeding it to the dog (by force if the dog has no appetite) and then taking sequential Xrays over the next few hours until the barium has passed into the large intestine. If the barium stays in one place for a long time it suggests there may be an obstruction at that point, and surgery is indicated (in medical terms we call this an ex-lap, short for exploratory laparotomy).

If the foreign body is causing a complete or significant blockage but is identified within 48 hours of being ingested, the surgery to remove it is usually straightforward. A gastrotomy (surgically opening the stomach) usually has faster healing and less complications than an enterectomy (surgically opening the intestine), so if the foreign body has already entered the small intestine but then got stuck, the surgeon may attempt to push it back to the stomach and then perform a gastrotomy. In cases where there has been a delay in diagnosis it is not uncommon to find that the intestinal mucosa has turned a dark purple or black colour, and this means that particular loop of intestine must be removed and the healthy ends sutured back together – a more challenging surgery but nevertheless one with a fairly good prognosis if identified in good time before the bacteria have crossed the damaged intestinal wall into the abdomen and caused a septic peritonitis.

Local News Australian man, 60, dies from electrocution in Bali An Australian expatriate living in Bali has died after he was electrocuted while cleaning his swimming pool. Anthony Gallagher, from Liverpool, NSW, was killed at his rented property in Jimbaran, Bali, in what Indonesian officials describe as a ‘tragic accident’. The 60-year-old had been living on the tourist island with his Indonesian wife when he plugged in a floor cleaning machine and was immediately electrocuted, according to local Balinese media. Witnesses told authorities the man had been barefoot and it was lightly raining when he was fatally injured on Wednesday morning. A member of Mr Gallagher’s staff cut the electricity and brought him into the house to lie on the sofa but he had already died. South Kuta Police chief I Nengah Patrem confirmed Mr Gallagher’s death was purely accidental and the Australian consulate had been informed. ‘The Australian has died after being electrocuted when he was cleaning the pool. It’s an accident,’ Mr Patrem said. ‘We did not find any crime in the case. It is purely an accident,’ he said. A friend of Mr Gallagher shared an emotional tribute to Facebook following his death. ‘Sadly passed away in Bali because of accident in home,’ Alan Croft, who lives in Seminyak, wrote. ‘Anthony Gallagher rest in peace. Heartfelt condolences to his wife, family and all who have known this fine gentleman.’ Mr Gallagher’s body was taken to Sanglah hospital morgue. [Mail Online February 17, 2018] Female prisoners in Bali move to new facility Inmates of the Denpasar Women’s Penitentiary have officially been moved to a new building in Kerobokan, Bali. The location of the building was previously used as the Kerobokan Prison’s women block. Even with the newly built facility, the same problems are still faced, namely overcapacity. “The new building has a capacity for only 120 prisoners. However, we currently have a total of 198 prisoners,” the prison’s warden Setyo Pratiwi said during the launch of the new building on Wednesday. Among the 198 prisoners currently serving their sentences in the new building are 16 foreign nationals from countries across the world, such as Australia, New Zealand, the UK and the US. Among the foreign prisoners are British drug smuggler Lindsay June Sandiford, who is on death row; Heather Lois Mack, an American woman who killed her mother; and Sara Connor, an Australian woman who killed a Balinese police officer. The Denpasar Women’s Penitentiary was officially established in 2016. Its new building was built on the site of the ex-Kerobokan female prison complex, and covers an area of 2,000 square-meters. The construction of the Denpasar Women’s Penitentiary was begun following the government’s decision to separate Kerobokan women and men’s prisons. “To support the gender mainstreaming of correctional affairs, the Law and Human Rights Ministry decided to establish women’s penitentiaries across Indonesia, including the Denpasar Women’s Penitentiary,” Pratiwi said. She said the new building had 16 rooms for inmates who had been separated from other prisoners because of their specific cases. “We have special rooms for children of prisoners and death row inmates,” Pratiwi said. [The Jakarta Post February 14, 2018] Accused Australian drug smuggler released from Kerobokan prison and taken to mental health institution The accused Australian drug smuggler has been released from Kerobokan prison and has been taken to a mental health institute. Joshua James Baker was arrested by police at an airport in Bali on October 8 for allegedly bringing a mix of marijuana, tobacco and prescription-only drugs into the country. Mr Baker faced 15 years in prison but was released on Tuesday and taken to a mental health institution where he was greeted by his sister. The Queensland man’s lawyers were able to arrange a deal with local authorities according to 9 News. The 32-year-old was seen hugging his sister at what appeared to be a reception area for the mental health unit, which is a far cry from the notorious, overcrowded jail cells of Kerobokan prison. After being arrested, Mr Baker managed to escape police, leading them on a 10 hour chase when he allegedly escaped after asking to visit the toilet. Mr Baker charged with drug importation after he was allegedly found with 28 grams of marijuana mixed with tobacco and 37 Diazepam pills. The Mt Isa man’s lawyer Pande Putu Maya Arsanti was extremely concerned for Mr Baker’s well-being. ‘Police have tried to stop his medication so that they know the reaction,’ she said, expressing concerns for her client’s health as well as the health and safety of those around him. ‘He has an extreme headache. His mood is very bad. He always says, “I have a headache, it hurts. Why did they bring me here”,’ Ms Arsanti said previously. Mr Baker’s trial has been delayed. [Mail Online February 13, 2018] Bali’s Abandoned Plane Down in southern Bali sits an abandoned Boeing 737. It’s not at an airport or an airplane boneyard. Instead, it sits in a field near some kind of limestone quarry, and no one quite knows how it got there. The abandoned plane is located near the southern coast of the Bukit Peninsula in Bali. It’s just off the Raya Nusa Dua Selatan Highway, and only five minutes from the popular and picturesque Pandawa beach. In other words, it’s not exactly hidden away from the world. Which makes it even stranger is that no one seems to know how it got there. You’d think someone would notice the arrival of a Boeing 737 in a field near a fairly major road, but… no. Some locals say that the plane, which has no livery or notable insignia, was destined to be converted into a tourist-friendly restaurant. Apparently, however, the owner ran out of money and left his Boeing 737 to slowly rust surrounded by a shabby hut and a few shipping containers. Apart from that, little is known about the abandoned aircraft. It may have been purchased and reassembled where it now stands, which would explain, at least in part, why no one saw it arrive. The plane has now become a tourist attraction in its own right. And, strangely, it’s not the only abandoned plane you can visit on the Indonesian island. About five miles north sits another abandoned Boeing 737, right next to a Dunkin’ Donuts. The abandoned Boeing 737 in the south of the Bukit Peninsula is easy enough to reach, as long as you can spot it from the road. The view of the plane is obstructed from the highway, so you need to keep your eyes open or you could easily miss it. You can see the plane by climbing up onto the containers that surround it. Or, for a better view, head slightly further down the road where you’ll find a path that leads up above the plane. You’ll have to pay a small fee to enter, as the plane is on private property. [Atlas Obscura February 20, 2018] Someone tried to send 24 human skulls in the mail from Bali to the Netherlands Customs officers in Bali intercepted 24 human skulls that were being sent from the Indonesian island on to the Netherlands. The skulls were stopped in two shipments, the first on Jan. 11, the second on Jan. 18. “The 24 human skulls were to be sent to the Netherlands and were stopped by Ngurah Rai Customs. They were stopped in two instances by the Post Office,” head of Ngurah Rai Customs office Himawan Indarjono said in Bali on Friday, as quoted by Detik. “From the two actions, we got a total of four crates containing 24 human skulls,” explained Himawan. The packages aroused the suspicions of Customs officers when going through an x-ray. No, it doesn’t seem we have a mass murderer on hand. The skulls are estimated to be quite old, believed to be cultural relics, coming from either Kalimantan or Papua, according to Helly Siti Halimah, Pos Indonesia region VIII Bali-Nusra director. “There were artistic carvings on the skulls, as well as something for a sculpture. It’s possible that they belonged to the Dayak tribe in Kalimantan or came from Papua,” said Halimah. The skulls have been handed over to the Bali Cultural Heritage Preservation Department for further examination so their origins and age can be more accurately pinned down. The sender, of the skulls, who has been identified as an Indonesian national with the initial “R” and has an address in Kuta, is being investigated by the authorities, says Himawan. Number of Australians visiting our favourite overseas getaway has fallen but burgeoning amount of Chinese tourists means we’re not missed The amount of Australians visiting Bali has dropped in the last year, as Chinese tourists continue to flock to the Indonesian island in huge numbers. Figures from Bali’s statistic agency reveal China had a 24 per cent share of visitors to the picturesque tourist destination compared to Australia’s 19 per cent. Chinese people visiting Bali spiked by a whopping 40 per cent, while Australia’s visitors dropped by 4 per cent. The country with the biggest rise in Bali interest was India, which recorded a 45 per cent spike in visitors to Indonesia’s paradise. Americans are also increasingly taking an interest in Bali, with the country recording a 12 per cent spike in the number of visitors to take total tourism numbers to 191,000. In total, Bali received nearly 5.7 million visitors in 2017, up from 4.9 million visitors in 2016. The country has received negative publicity in the Australian media relating to volcano eruptions disrupting flights. Back in 2010, just 648,000 people visited Bali, compared to the 1.1 million who holiday there today. Head of Bali’s Central Statistics Agency Adi Nugrhoho the labelled Australia the ‘Kangaroo Country’ in an interview with Antara. ‘Although the amount of people from the Kangaroo Country to Bali was reduced, it is still ranked second most in supplying tourists to the island after China,’ he said. Australians in Bali this month have been singing the nations praises in social media posts. ‘Thank you for showing the real beauty of Bali,’ one user said in a message to Travel Guides. ‘It’s really good to show another perspective for those who haven’t been to Bali yet.’ Another user said: ‘If you’ve ever been to Bali you know it’s one of the hardest places to ever leave. I came home and worked my butt off and now I’m heading back there knowing that I don’t have to come back if I don’t want to.’ [Mail Online February 13, 2018] Mount Agung: Alert status lowered by Indonesian authorities as volcano activity slows down Indonesian authorities have lowered the alert status of Bali’s Mount Agung volcano after scientists found a reduction in its activity. More than 140,000 people have fled the area surrounding the mountain after authorities warned an eruption may be imminent in September. However, the decision was taken on Saturday to downgrade Agung’s status after several scientific indicators showed a decrease in activity over the past month. “People’s activities as well as tourism in Bali has been declared safe and there will no more disruption related to the volcano at this time,” Indonesian energy minister, Ignasius Jonan, said in a statement. Indonesia’s volcano agency said smoke and tremors from the 3,031-metre-tall volcano, which indicate rising magma, have reduced significantly, but Agung remained on the second-highest alert level. The agency said villagers living on the mountain’s slopes could return home, but warned them not to venture close to its crater, which was still emitting smoke. The radius of the volcano’s danger zone has also been reduced from 3.7 miles to 2.4 miles from its crater. Indonesian officials first raised the eruption alert to its highest possible level five months ago, when seismic activity increased at the mountain. The activity decreased by late October, and the alert was lowered before being lifted to the highest level again in late November, forcing more than 55,000 people out of their homes and into temporary shelters. Tourists, who were stranded when the island’s only airport closed for nearly three days, joined the rush to leave the area. Agung, located around 45 miles northeast of Bali’s tourist hotspot of Kuta, last erupted in 1963, killing about 1,100 people. It is one more than 120 active volcanoes in Indonesia, which is prone to eruptions and earthquakes due to its location on the “Ring of Fire”, a series of fault lines stretching from the Western Hemisphere to Japan and Southeast Asia. [Independent February 10, 2018] PLN abandons suspended high power lines and opts for new submarine cables between Java and Bali A growing demand for electrical power in Bali has caused the State Power Board (PLN) to urgently commence the long-delayed and controversial construction of the high-voltage Java-Bali Crossing (JBC). Finance.detik.com quotes the Deputy Manager for alternative Energy at PLN, Dewanto, who said: “The Java-Bali Crossing is progressing as anticipated. If the JBC is not completed, the electrical reserves will be very small, but perhaps not yet in crisis territory. But, if requests for new connections continue to grow, then we may well face a real crisis of electricity shortage. The standard oversupply or reserve of electricity for a specific region is targeted at 30%. Dewanto made his comment during a discussion on “The Future of New Energy in Bali” held at Kubu Kopi in Denpasar on February 15, 2018. Dewanto said new sources of electricity are essential to continue to attract investment in Bali. He said a minimum of two years is needed to establish new electrical sources for Bali, with investors sometimes forced to wait unto more power comes online. PLN says Bali’s current island-wide supply of electricity totals 1,290 megawatts with an effective average capacity of 1,100 megawatts. On the assumption that Bali’s power requirements grow 8.7% per year, then, by 2021, Bali will face a peak power demand of 1,214 megawatts. “We need power reserves, The planning of PLN for JBC is seen as the most efficient means of increasing power supplies as opposed to building more power generating plants on the Island. Building steam-generated power plants (PLTU) is very expensive, without even discussing problems of locations and environmental concerns,” said Dewanto. PLN says the JBC will eventually provide 2,800 megawatts of additional power supply for Bali. The JBC project is budgeted to cost Rp. 4.8 trillion needed to construct 514 electrical pylons carrying power from West Situbundo to Banyuwangi before laying a submarine cable to bring power to shores of Bali at Jembrana or Tabanan. The underwater cable will cover a distance of 2.68km. Once installed, Bali should have sufficient power on hand to meet projected power demands through 2020. Apparently, PLN has shelved plans to construct the world’s tallest overhead high voltage lines stretching over the straits between East Java and Bali in favor of submarine cables. CURIOSITY AS ANTI-VENOM TO FEAR. THE SNAKE MAN OF UBUD ‘Financially, emotionally and in terms of the pain or even death, I’m taking a calculated risk.’ Ron Lilley, Herpetologist And aren’t we all? For the seekers and adventurers among us, there are many alternative maps to existence in this universe. But fear can limit endeavour. What are you willing to risk to answer the call? Ron Lilley looks fear in the eye on a daily basis and has all out embraced his curiosity in the natural world. ‘When other kids were off to football matches on Saturday afternoons, me and my mates were off to Bradgate Park in Leicestershire turning over dead deer and re-discovering carnivorous burying beetles that had not been seen for one-hundred years.’ Imagine if Ron had simply followed the crowd to the football for fear of not fitting in. Or as the underbelly of the decaying carcass was revealed, Ron had turned away; his fascination capped. Imagine if fear had stolen these pivotal, enduring, kindling sparks of his fascinating life. How many of these moments do we miss? We feel the magic rise in the pit of our stomach but we smother it quickly. For fear of the hard work we must do, or worse still, fear of revealing our true nature. Ron’s inquiring mind has led him deep into the fire: working in zoos, handling rare and private animal collections, hitch-hiking to North Africa, surveying primary tropical rain-forest in Seram, catching crocodiles with convicted drug-dealers in Panama, volcano dodging in Krakatau and doing his best not to be taken hostage in Papua New Guinea. Ron’s life to date is anything but ordinary and he’s now in his element, surrounded by, and taming, the most dangerous and feared creatures of Indonesia. We’re beneath the towering Balinese volcanoes of Batur and Agung. The morning sun cascades yellow through the gaps in the abundant jungle canopy that surrounds Ron’s home. The sound of running water, playful birds, waves of incessant insects, barking dogs and amorous reptiles fill the air with the miracle of life. It’s no coincidence that this fascinating world adventurer has found his way to this magical spot of natural beauty and wild diversity. ‘When I think about my time as a kid in England and in Europe, I saw snakes like these only on TV. Now I live in a place where they pass through the garden.’ This comment prompts © Baru Redana @yourbaliexcursion me to nervously scan the immediate area around my feet. Balinese photographers Baru, Made and Wayan are mainly terrified of snakes. It’s a cultural thing. There are some incredibly deadly beasts on the island and most Indonesians have stories of family members or friends who’ve been bitten and died. The local trio offer the writhing subjects of our shoot a respectful radius. We’re all a little apprehensive in Ron’s snake room too. It wouldn’t be a place I, or any of my Indonesian media cohort, would consider taking a break - their innate fear is adding an

extra edge to proceedings. It’s tight, and musky. There are live rats, eye-shields, shed skins and all manner of unfamiliar paraphernalia. This, in addition to the twenty-or-so rescued serpents extolling various mysterious, silent, slippery and fanged capacities of nightmarish note. Our eyes hurry around the enclosure for evidence of any clumsily closed lids. ‘I’m not going to open this one. She’s a big cobra and she spits.’ Ron’s comment is met with frank approval from all of us. He moves from the spitter to a shorter, plumper, green snake with red eyes and a red tail. Baru, Made and Wayan back towards the door. ‘Lipi Gadang’ they gasp, as if the devil himself has been unmasked. ‘This green pit viper bites more people here in Bali than any other snake. They come out after dark and they come down to the © Baru Redana @yourbaliexcursion ground. People step on them. Folk are treated for bites from this snake every week. And there’s no anti-venom for it in all of Indonesia.’ We urge Ron to be careful. ‘If it strikes, there’s nothing you can do. It’s much faster than any human reaction.’ We aren’t wholly reassured. ‘Snake venom is a cocktail of sixty to a hundred different chemicals. You will feel immediate, extreme pain and an immediate swelling. It can swell so much, it can split. The tissue dies, goes black and ultimately the meat falls off the bone.’ Nope! We move on. ‘Here’s Bali’s most dangerous snake.’ Oh, thank God. ‘The Malayan or blue krait. It’s a member of the cobra family. When it bites people, they can be dead within the hour.’ Despite some of the more exciting stories he’ll hold court with, Ron is incredibly grounded and grounding. © Baru Redana @yourbaliexcursion He’s packed with knowledge and inspiration from a life fully lived. His connection to nature and willingness to embrace curiosity over fear has provided him a life map to abundance and adventure. Like the myriad reticulations on Ron’s prized python, Diva, there are many colours, patterns, ebbs and flows on the surface. When you look a bit closer, in a new light, there’s a lush, blue sheen to Diva’s skin. The question is, are you brave enough to look more closely? Will you turn over the deer? Are you ready to face your fear and for the hard work you’ll find when you answer the call to your true self? In the modern world, Ron’s path can be considered alternative, but he has found delight and peace of mind through his passion

and there is much to learn from this inspiring man. ‘If the diver always thought of the shark, he would never lay hands on the pearl.’ SA’DI RON’S TOP TOOLS FOR FINDING PEARLS Stay curious I’m happy here. I’m on this beautiful island with my amazing Javan wife. I’ve a wonderful son who’s a guitarist in a band. And it’s only by being engaged and © Baru Redana @yourbaliexcursion interested in the world around me and by taking opportunities that have come my way that I find myself in this lucky position. It’s important to maintain an inquiring mind and to want to learn about the world around you. Be present I read Herman Hess, Alan Watts and books by other Westerners who’ve searched for Eastern wisdom. I enjoy a little yoga. I’ve read the holy books and I’ve been a student for transcendental meditation. © Baru Redana @yourbaliexcursion They’re all tools to bring me into presence and, without a doubt, my connection to nature and animals has also rooted me in the present moment. Challenge your perceptions Snakes in general don’t have a spikey nature. There is a common misrepresentation of snakes in silly films like Snakes On A Plane and Anaconda. I’ve known snakes a long time and they have many of the same characteristics of dogs, cats and other more common types of pets. Our mind can create obstacles and monsters that aren’t there. Because cultural fears prevent local people from going down the riverbanks at night, this is the place where the wildlife is the safest. This is where I’ll find some of the most amazing natural wonders. Plan, but not too much Snakes slither into my path. Literally. And I wander into theirs. I go with the flow. I’ve accepted short-term contracts that have blessed me with some of my greatest life experiences all over the world. Without a willingness to receive new opportunity, adapt and dance while the music plays, the world could look very different for me today. Network As much as developing a passion, or specificity, can be fuel towards your creativity and worldly joy, it can also be isolating. The key is having people to bounce ideas off and to enthuse with; it’s really important. And for networks, social media is a gift. MORE ON RON You can follow Ron on Facebook @ronlilleybalisnakepatrol Ron continually campaigns for the availability of snakespecific anti-venoms in Indonesia. Read his popular article,

‘Snakebite’ in the Jakarta Post, which highlights the issue.

South East Asia in 2050

LOOKING FOR WORK (Cari Kerja)

Blood & Silk – Power and Conflict in Modern South East Asia Foreigners who have lived in South East Asia for any length of time have probably been drawn here by a combination of climate, business opportunity and/or resonance with the culture and aesthetic of the region. The mystery of the East or allure of the “land below the wind’ you could say. At the same time, few of us could fail to have become aware of the shadow behind the allure.

way to strongman Mahathir Mohamad, ushering in demagoguery along with identity and money politics, while ignoring the democratic institutions entrusted to him. In Singapore, Lee Kuan Yew was to browbeat his fellow citizens into total acquiescence thereby performing the miracle in creating a viable independent state that was in 50 years to have a GDP per capita of US$90,500, the third highest in the world.

Whether by virtue of our status as guests in these countries or because it suits us to ignore the dark side, we tend to give an easy pass to our hosts in a way we almost certainly would not in our own countries. We see the astonishing progress and wealth creation that has taken place over the past decades, the glittering cities and the growth of consumerism and, while we may whinge among ourselves on the superficialities of our own lot, we tend to overlook such things as the exploitation of women, disparities of wealth, corruption in high and low degree, compromised judiciaries and free press, in systems maintained by entrenched elites to be found in varying degrees in various of the countries in this region.

By the time Vatikiotis had joined FEER as bureau chief in Jakarta in 1988 the Carrian debacle had already set the tone for business ethics in the region and thereafter money politics pretty much prevailed, except perhaps in Singapore, which was where the proceeds were banked. Following his stints in Kuala Lumpur and Bangkok with colleague John Macbeth he covered the financial meltdown of 1998 in Jakarta and the anti-Chinese riots that ensued.

If from time to time you wonder how it is that an area of the world so blessed by nature, populated by so many hard working and talented peoples; a trading bloc (ASEAN) that is the world’s fifth largest economy with a GDP of over US$2.55 trillion; that grew for decades at a rate of 7% p.a. and GDP per capita that has increased by 3,200%; but whose people have yet to enjoy the social and individual human rights you might reasonably expect to accompany such stellar development - then you would do well to read “Blood and Silk” the new book by Michael Vatikiotis, subtitled Power and Conflict in Modern Southeast Asia published recently by Weidenfeld & Nicolson (available in Periplus). Vatikiotis is an American, born in 1957 in the US Midwest, who studied Southeast Asian history at London University’s School of Asian Studies, obtaining his PhD at Oxford and a longstanding student of the region having first travelled here as a student in 1979, coverlng it journalistically since his posting as BBC correspondent in Jakarta in 1987 and then joining the Far Eastern Economic Review (FEER) in 1988 as bureau chief in Jakarta , Kuala Lumpur and Bangkok successively before becoming editor of the magazine itself in 2001.

After the closure of FEER in 2004 Vatikiotis was offered the job of setting up the regional office in Singapore for the Centre for Humanitarian Dialogue, a Geneva – based organisation for the mediation of armed conflict. In the intervening years this has involved the mediations in Aceh, the Moslem seperatist movement in Southern Thailand, the Moro insurrection in Mindanao and various separatist movements in Myanmar’s border areas. After his 40 years of close observation of the region Vatikiotis does not share what he describes as the Polyannish belief of most international investors, that the continued economic growth anticipated for the region will lead in time to anything but small incremental steps in the equitable sharing of wealth and a more fair society. The one constant he has observed, he says is “the perpetual selfishness of SoutheastAsian elites and their wilful subjugation of the rights of citizens to their own considerations of wealth and power”. The increasing lack of tolerance and growing insistence on religious orthodoxy encourages extremists while moderates remain silent. This in turn exposes ASEAN countries with Moslem majorities to the risk of becoming battlegrounds for the international struggle between the Saudis and Iranians for leadership in the Islamic world, he says.

As such Vatikiotis, who has also written two novels set in the region, is better qualified than most to provide an account explaining why the nations of post-war South East Asia, having recently won independence, whose founding fathers imbued with the principles of Fabian democracy, and whose countries would within a few short decades achieve dramatic economic growth, nonetheless become authoritarian demi-democracies, whose successor elites did not hesitate from repressing their people in defense of narrow self-interest.

Meanwhile he writes that efforts by the US and other Western powers and their allies to moderate the ever-gowing Chinese influence in the region is generating geopolitical friction and will probably not do much to prevent Chinese economic predominace in the future.

I recall the sense of hope and promise that pervaded the region when I first came to the area in 1970, working with the FEER in Hong Kong through the mid-1970s. It was the era when the East Asian’s ” tiger economies”, South Korea, Taiwan and Hong Kong, took off so spectacularly and, in the case of the former two, going on to establish fully-fledged democracies. The Vietnam War was winding down and the Association of South East Asian Nations (ASEAN) had just been founded in 1967, primarily to support the security and economic development of the five non-Communist countries of the region comprising the Philippines, Thailand, Malaysia, Singapore and Indonesia. The area quickly became the darling of foreign investors, growth rates soared upwards of 7% annually and yet the warning signals were already there.

It’s not all bad however. He sees the region returning to something more Asian, similar to the loose conglomeration of successful trading cities that existed long before the arrival of the Europeans in the 15th century, and their playing off the competing external presences as best as circumstances allow.

By 1972 Marcos had imposed martial law; in 1975 in coup-ridden Thailand the army had turned its guns and goons onto its own student elite, driving a generation of them into the hills; successfully opening Indonesia up to overseas investment General Suharto maintained a heavy hand against any opposition, in Malaysia the old guard, in the person of Tunku Abdul Rahman and his aristocratic successors, gave

Vatikiotis’ vision for South East Asia in 2050 coloured as it is by the three reasons above and the climatic dangers posed by rising sea levels to many of the major (and already sinking) coastal cities is not a rosy one.

Sounds a bit like the sea-based Athenian ascendancy of the 3rd century BCE, with the Chinese as the Persians, which can’t be all bad. Whatever the case, this is the most informed book written on the region in a long time and well worth the read.
