to your community and also create a fun activity for your family. Please consider volunteering and send me an email at chris@balilandoffice.com or feel free to call me at 081933079922. The time is now to get involved so send that email or make that phone call now please.
Wow is the word that comes to mind. The places we go and the things we do. I feel that we have exciting news to share with you right now and hope you agree. Without further hype we are pleased to announce that Rotary Club Bali Canggu has just finalized a partnership with 2 exciting programs that will impact our community in a clear and visible way. The two groups we are referring to is the newly created Pantai Berawa Surf Lifesaving Club and the already successful and incredible Canggu Beach Clean Up Community. The Pantai Berawa Surf Lifesaving Club has as its mission to create a safe PATROLLED Beach on Pantai Berawa that will be staffed and run by qualified Indonesian Lifeguards that are trained and certified paid Lifesavers. This beach which we consider from LV8 Hotel until the Temple Parking Lot will be under the jurisdiction of Badung Balawista but also supported by the watchful and caring eyes of 2 internationally trained and experienced Lifeguards with years of time on the beach under their whistles. We already have a small shed for storage and have a plan to have all the equipment and accessories needed to do this properly. This beach has blossomed
into a great place for locals and expats alike and is in need of the protection from trained professionals that we want to provide. This can only be done with your support. The dream to have a safe patrolled beach is only the beginning. The next beautiful goal we are making a reality is the creation of a NIPPERS Program on Sunday Mornings. This is an Australian model Beach Program that is for children from age 6-12 years old. This is a chance for kids to get together and have FUN while at the same time being taught the skills and information to be safe at the beach. This is hugely successful in Australia and is basically in the DNA of the the kids and now we want to bring it here. We are blessed to have a committed person who successfully ran this in Australia and is eager to get it started here. The program will be run in 2 time segments from 7am-9am and then 9.15-11.15 and we will have 2 age groups which is 6-8 years old and 9-12 years old. This is for boys and girls, locals and expats. The locals are free and the expats are asked to pay rp 50,000 donation the proceeds of which will pay for the Lifeguards that patrol the beach everyday. We have to restrict the numbers to 50 kids per session so sign up is essential. We have to be strict on our ages and numbers to insure this is an enjoyable and SAFE experience for all kids. The program will run from Mid April until October and is sure to be a success. We do need your support to make this happen. We will need volunteers to get this off the ground and running smoothly. We will need at least 6 parents for each session to assist us. You do not have to have any qualifications except a smile and a love for the beach. Liking kids is also a bonus. This is a great chance to give
The next great partnership that just seems to make great sense is that we have also teamed up with the incredible people from the Canggu Beach Clean-Up Community. If you love the beach like we do and you want to spend time there as much as we do then for sure you want it to be clean and safe. We have another dream to put these 2 organization’s together to support each other. What better education for our kids then to teach them to be safe and also care about the environment. In addition to the wonderful beach clean ups that the Canggu Beach Clean Up Community does, we at Rotary want to work together to get a tractor and Beach Rake to clean the beach. We also in the future want to raise money from the community and the local businesses to pay for workers to operate the equipment and take care of the trash. This is another very feasable dream that can easily happen but only with your support. Again please email chris@balilandoffice.com or feel free to call me at 081933079922 to get involved and make a difference. Last but not least remember that this is also the home of Project Protect Helmet Man which educates kids on why to wear motorcycle helmets and how to. So far we have given away over 10,500 helmets and continue to do more and more until every child on a motorbikes is wearing a helmet. We just had a great giveaway up in Ubud last week and had a great time. So to say it one last time, GET INVOLVED. Its fun and rewarding and we need your help. Thank you for reading this and I hope it causes you to write that email or make that call. It is 100% true and proven time and time again that the only important lasting change that is made in the world is by an individual. Be that person that stands up and gets involved. I promise you will not regret it. Copyright © 2018 Rotary News You can read all past articles of Rotary News at www.BaliAdvertiser.biz

6 OMunity Connects Visitors with the Traditions of a Village Life The commercialisation of spirituality in Bali has been rapid, oftentime reaping little benefit other than profit for the so called ‘healers.’ Luckily, Balinese culture and traditions remain strong in many parts of the island, particularly away from the tourist enclaves of southern Bali. Located in the village of Sudaji, in north Bali, OMunity has been set up to embrace the ideas of sustainability and community development by encouraging a respectful cultural exchange between locals and visitors. OMunity consists of OMstay — a traditional family compound with twelve guestrooms — and OMvillage —a number of families that open their homes to visitors — all set amid the hustle and bustle of Sudaji’s village life. Surrounded by rice paddies, and fl anked by a rushing river, the village of Sudaji consists of ten banjar—or closely linked communities— and approximately 8,000 inhabitants—around half of whom work outside the village. Sudaji is home to the highest waterfall in Bali – the seven-level Sekumpul waterfall and offers plenty of fascinating trekking opportunities. “We mainly live as farmers, as well as builders and temple-makers. We have been blessed with a good soil, so some of the best rice in Bali comes from here,” says the founder of OMunity, Zanzan. “The people in the village still live according to the traditions of their ancestors, but they are also happy to share their culture with visitors. For example, a stay at OMunity can involve excursions to the local school, attending ceremonies, visiting local craftspeople, and learning how to harvest and plant rice.” Zanzan’s inspiration for OMunity came from both his experience in the hospitality industry and selfintrospection. After spending years working at various hotels—including Hilton and Ritz-Carlton—Zanzan was hired to manage the Agung Rai Museum of Art in Ubud, where he ended up working for nine years. This is where he became interested in the concept of preserving tradition and living in harmony with nature, and experienced the start of his spiritual awakening. One day, he received a phone call from one of his son’s teachers telling him that his son was not mixing well with other students. As this was out of character for Zanzan’s son Rama, his teacher queried the boy, who ended up confiding in her that he missed his father. “This touched my heart because I knew that it was true. I was working so hard, I would leave the house before Rama woke up and would get back home after he was already asleep,” Zanzan says. “This was a breaking point for me. I told ARMA that I wanted to take my annual leave. I used this time to go up to the highest temple in Bali - Lempuyang temple in Karangasem – where I spent 33 days in contemplation to decide whether I wanted to stay with ARMA or set up my own project. This is when I decided that I wanted to go back to my family village and become a part of a close-knit community again” Thus the idea for OMunity was born. In 2009 Zanzan returned to Sudaji and set up OMstay, a family compound with four guestrooms for those interested in staying in the village overnight. OMvillage—where visitors can stay at family homes dotted throughout the village—was set up shortly later. A visit to OMstay involves embracing the lives of Zanzan, his wife Putu, as well as their children and extended family. The open-air kitchen area, set amid a large garden, is where most of the activity takes place—this is where all the meals are prepared and guests share stories with each other, as well as their host family. All of the meals are vegetarian, and eaten together, after a chanted blessing. OMstay features eco-friendly accommodation made from organic materials by members of the local community. These go hand-in-hand with Zanzan’s vision of community development where local crafts are revered, and children are taught about environmental sustainability, and the dangers of chemicals and fertilizers. “Our first four bungalows were inspired by a Balinese cow house, and we had them built out of bamboo. We also have an octagonal bamboo yoga and meditation space, which is large enough for groups of 100 people and is sometimes used for community gatherings,” Zanzan says. Zanzan says that a part of his job at the Agung Rai Museum of Art involved organizing large international events—one of which attracted 525 participants from 63 countries—and that whenever this happened he ended up filling up the nearby guesthouses and hotels. Interestingly, he has adopted this concept in Sudaji. “OMunity started out with four guestrooms, but soon we ended up having more guests that we could handle, so we started putting them up at the houses of our family and friends,” Zanzan says. “We helped families bring their guestrooms to a certain standard and taught them how to look after guests.” While during its first year of operation, OMunity consisted of seventeen rooms, including four OMstay rooms and thirteen OMvillage rooms, today it has 76 rooms, comprised of twelve OMstay rooms and 64 OMvillage rooms. The OMvillage rooms are peppered throughout the village, each one unique in terms of character. Some rooms even feature kitchenettes and living areas. “It has been a learn-by-doing experience for us and the other host families in the village,” Zanzan says. “The interaction is all based on mutual respect, and is a great opportunity for a cultural exchange. Plus, it gives hosts the chance to practice their English and their guests the opportunity to practice their Indonesian or Balinese”. While taking tourists back in time to an era when traveling involved immersing oneself in a culture through food, language and a way of life, remains high on Zanzan’s list of priorities, he hopes that opening Sudaji up to the outside world will eventually ensure that the younger generation does not have to leave the village in search of work. “It is sad to see so many young people leave Sudaji,” Zanzan says. “As long as we avoid the south Bali model of tourism, and base our model on mutual respect and exchange, we will not only develop our village in a sustainable manner, but perhaps also show young people that they do not need to leave Sudaji to make a life for themselves.”

9 The Frugal Balinist Boost your power! Adding more power (daya) to your existing electrical service is not difficult to arrange and doesn’t take much time. A certified PLN contractor needs to do the installation. He will work for PT. Adi Putra, CV. Karya Mulya, CV. Karya Indah Teknik CV. Pancar Electric Kusuma Teknik, CV. Maha Putra Engineering CV. Adi Jaya, CV. Manik Mas or the CV. Harry Soft Group. The cost depends on how much power you add. For example, 900 VA will cost Rp1,352,000 and 2,200 VA will cost Rp1,467,280 which includes registration, labor, fuse box, materials, etc. You or an Indonesian friend needs to explain the situation clearly both to your landlord and to the people at PLN. Your landlord should give you permission to add your own power if you offer to pay all before and after costs. Only the owner of the building is able to add more power, or give his permission to someone to register at PLN on his or her behalf. Take a copy of the property owner’s KTP, directions to your house and your landlord’s last electricity bill on which his name appears. When you move, just call PLN 123 to discontinue the service and to make sure that you’re not billed further. There will be about a Rp500,000 charge to return to your landlord’s original service. Domestic Immigration Department Heads Up! The imigrasi department for Indonesian citizens is open 8 am to 10 am except lunch break 12 pm to 1 pm. *The office closes at 3 pm but they remain open until 5 pm servicing those who have taken a ticket and are still waiting. *Never go on a Friday or on the day after a long holiday. *The congestion is such that you should forget about taking a car unless your driver can drop you off and come back later to pick you up; if you’re on a motorcycle, you can get much closer to the immigration office. *Patrons of the crowded domestic waiting room should get there by 9 am and grab a ticket to reserve a place in line; ticket dispenser closes at 10 am. *No more than 200 tickets are dispensed each day. *If you apply online for an Indonesian passport, you wait a longer time on a waiting list and on the processing of your passport. *Applying for an Indonesian passport in person, on the other hand, takes 1-1.5 months and 2-3 visits to imigrasi. Bring birth certificate, KTP and KK. *If you want to visit imigrasi just one time, hire an agent. Their fee for an Indonesian passport is Rp2 juta plus the passport cost (Rp355.000). *Take very good care of your Indonesian passport; you’ll be fined at least Rp600,000 if it’s soiled, damaged or torn and will have to wait 6 months to renew it!

Getting around. The 50,000 vehicles passing through the Jasa Marga Toll Way gate every day cause bottlenecks; save time by having your non-cash electronic payment card topped up and don’t remove the card too quickly from the slot reader. *Driving while distracted causes accidents. Protect yourself and others by following commonsense precautions while driving: 1) Put your smartphone out of sight and out of reach; 2) Use navigation apps only if phone is mounted on dash; 3) Don’t wear ear buds. *Affordable accommodations in Singapore can be found at Traveloka and Booking.com, but Traveloka prices include all taxes and service charges. Booking.com does not, so Booking.com may appears cheaper but when you are billed from Booking.com the price may be higher than Traveloka. *If you’re headed for Indonesia’s Outer Islands, Skyscanner.com is a great site to look for budget fl ights. * For Lombok and the Gilis, check out the Patagonia Xpress which uses diesel engines and working safety equipment. *Traveling abroad, always bring two ATM cards in case one of them doesn’t work. Tech Pointers. Black & white laser printers are fast, tough, compact, produce razor sharp printouts and the toner
(a black ink powder) and overall operation are substantially cheaper than overpriced inkjet cartridge printers. *The free security tool Malawarebytes Anti-Malware for Macs specifically protects against ransomware; free Bitdefender’s Anti-Ransomware is best for Windows. *Podcast Addict (Android) allows you to manage podcasts, radio, audio books, live stream, YouTube, Twitch, SoundCloud channels and RSS news feeds from a single app. *No cost for the first book you order from audio book service (http://a.co/a6AxGVv); you may also order a free audio book for a friend.
Food & Health. Wrapping cheese tightly in wax paper is a beautiful way to keep cheese fresh rather than plastic which suffocates cheese and causes mold. Store cheese in the vegetable crisper of the refrigerator, where the temperature is cold and stable. The harder the cheese, the longer it will last. *For spa supplies, essential oils, carrier oils, as well as organic beauty products free of harmful chemicals, go to Lotus Food Services, Jl. Bypass Ngurah Rai 18 Jimbaran, tel. 0361-701-001 and Nadis Herbal Herb shop, Jl. Suweta, Ubud, tel. 081-238-16024. *Herbalife is a reputable brand for safe, organic, “natural” beauty products. *Microwave ovens are bad for plastic containers and blast the nutrients out of vegetables. Instead, heat your plate of food inside a Jawa brand stainless-steel steamer (Rp150,000). Oh rats! We recently had to spend more than Rp2 juta on replacing a tangle of electric wiring under the car hood that hooked up the battery, headlights, starter motor, etc. which had been eaten by rats while parked in our garage – not that uncommon an occurrence in the tropics. To combat rodents, we used the oldest way to kill them or scare them by getting a cat, at the same time doing our bit to make our cat happy. We also now hang a bright white light under the front of the vehicle which repulses these nocturnal animals by exposing them to predators. If the car is sitting, keep rats away by starting the engine for at least 15 minutes every week. Indonesians keep outside washing machines, furniture and appliances from being damaged by rodents by moving them around once in a while, keeping the area well-swept and the fl oor clean with strong detergent.

Silverstone of the Biosphere 2 Foundation, the Asia Justice and Rights group, artist Made Bayak, and the Perenan-based waste management group Merah Putih Hijau. Other workshop leaders traveled from Borneo, Thailand, Hong Kong and China.
On March 2 - 4, Canggu Community School welcomed more than 300 people to campus to share ideas and solutions on a variety of environmental and humanitarian questions at the Global Issues Network (GIN) conference. Twenty-two schools from seven countries joined together for three days of solutionsfocused workshops, inspiring keynote sessions and forming new friendships with other like-minded students. The goal of a GIN conference is to equip participants with the information, strategies and skills and spark passion to make sustainable impacts on environmental or humanitarian issues. The conference theme, Seeking Solutions: Meeting Global Challenges in a Changing World, was an excellent way for students to be introduced to global issues and immersed in the possible ways that they can move forward. Our keynote speakers were exceptional. Dr Lindsay Porter, a whale and dolphin scientist who is based in Hong Kong, opened the conference by sharing her knowledge on the health of the oceans. After watching the documentary A Plastic Ocean, which her research contributed to, Dr Porter and the audience
engaged in a question and answer session. She also led a hands-on workshop on plastics and the oceans, showing students both the benefits of certain uses of plastic and the long-term effects of single-use plastics. On Saturday morning, Isabel and Melati Wijsen from Bye Bye Plastic Bags inspired our middle school participants as young people taking action. They led an exciting workshop, discussing their journey to ban plastic bags in Bali. Students saw the power of voice and the perseverance required for environmental activists. Later in the day, Gupta Sitorus from Bali-based company Avani Eco discussed the ways Indonesian companies are seeking alternatives to the plastic problem. Their #IAmNotPlastic campaign brings awareness to consumers and companies about the perils of plastic. Students selected their workshops from 16 incredible options that ranged from food sustainability to deforestation, from systems thinking to the art and science of persuasion, from building a greenhouse to building an action plan. Some workshops were led by Bali-based activists, including Dr Sally
Many of the workshops were inspired by youth leaders. Some students made miniature Aquaponics systems, led by teachers and students at Canggu Community School, and the Green School Bio Bus Team taught students to make candles and soaps. Young people active in Kids Cut Conflict Palm Oil and Keep Bali Clean shared the ways that youth are able to make decisions each day to impact the world around them. All participants left feeling energized to understand the issues more deeply and seek solutions in their everyday life. The conference was organized by a team of CCS students, who made environmentally-conscious choices while selecting vendors. Though the attempt to have an entirely plastic-free conference proved difficult, especially in regards to packaging, the team did have clear conversations with vendors in order to reduce excess packaging and limit the use of single-use plastics. Together, we can make positive impacts on our world. And it starts with our students. Katie Holmes, Middle Years Coordinator and English Teacher, Canggu Community School

If you’re ‘lucky’ like me and blessed with dodgy joints (thanks Mum), less moisture in the air means achey muscles, particularly first thing in the morning. Dry season can also be a curse for hay fever sufferers, causing headaches and even migraines for some. In search of natural remedies to alleviate these ailments, massage comes highly recommended and now, Body Temple is offering a new, magnesium oil massage!
While most of us are more inclined to reach for the multivitamins to get our daily dose of magnesium, studies show that this important mineral is more effectively absorbed though the skin than via an oral dose. Magnesium oil is effective in reducing muscle soreness and tension, eases headaches and migraines, reduces tendency towards muscle cramps and even assists in blood pressure management and sleep disorders. Opt for a 60 minute or 90 minute magnesium oil massage and feel the difference without having to pop a pill! Being in Bali means indulging in a massage on a weekly or even daily basis is definitely doable when you know it won’t bust the budget. SMILES ARE MOVING Sadly, we come to the end of an era this month, with the closing of Toko Senyum, the great little second hand shop in Sri Wedari Ubud (opposite Seniman Cafe). For more than a decade, the Smile Shop has supported Yayasan Senyum - the Smile Foundation – an extraordinarily successful nonprofit that has brought smiles to thousands of Indonesian children, through cranio-facial surgery. It’s always been a great shop, with clothes, household goods, books and DVDs/CDs at bargain prices, and the occasional lucky strike – as when one of the big hotels tossed out all its sheets and towels and donated them all to the foundation. The non-profit continues, with the Nyuh Kuning Smile Shop open everyday from 10am to 6pm, and a new Smile Shop having a grand opening in Sanur (Jl. Pantai Sindhu No. 3, close to Mc D Sanur) on April 6. Meanwhile, there are still a few days to support the original shop. Until the end of March, all items 50% off the price tag; all books at 5.000 each; all DVDs/CDs 4 pcs for 10.000. Please spread the word and help others to Smile. GENERASI INOVASI FOODIES Indonesia’s innovative, tech-savvy generation - Generasi Inovasi – is the inspiration behind this year’s Ubud Food Festival, to be held this year from April 13 to 15. And for sure this generation, both the consumers and those who work in the food industry, are super creative. They are inspired by their own Indonesian superstars, and the many amazing chefs and restaurateurs that have come to Ubud from other parts of the globe, bringing fresh approaches to food and an increasing respect for the quality of Indonesian produce. For the three days of this festival, the ‘Generasi Inovasi’ lens will focus on innovative ideas in Indonesia’s food industry, ideas that are clearly creating a distinct culinary culture, unique to the archipelago. It’s a fabulous adventure, bringing together more than 100 speakers and chefs, including Indonesia’s most outstanding chefs, producers, restaurateurs, food entrepreneurs, food photographers and storytellers; my taste buds are tingling already. GET RE-MOTE(IVATED). Like many expats who’ve lived in Bali a long time, I sometimes find it challenging to stay focussed on work-related topics, surrounded by so much natural beauty, and the temptations that a bustling tourist town can offer. So Hubud Coworking Centre is on the money, as usual, offering a “Productivity Mindset” workshop for members, so that we make the best use of our resources, time, energy and efforts. Led by a visiting entrepreneur with a solid corporate background, holding high-level management positions including cofounding an SME, the session will walk us through seven techniques for remaining clear and focused on achieving our goals in an organised way. To be held on Tuesday, April 17, from 12:30pm-1.30pm, it’s a members only event, but Hubud’s “Event Only” membership rate of 400,000rp/ month is great value, even if you don’t need all the other services
Do you know Hash House Harriers? If you like exercise, stunning scenery and meeting other energetic people, Hash is a great way to go, and next month’s Kartini Day event a great starting point. The life and work of Ibu Kartini - Indonesian pioneer in the area of education for girls and women’s rights – is celebrated as a national holiday every year on Saturday April 21. Taking part in a mixed running and rafting activity would have been one of many activities forbidden to women and girls of her generation.Hash House Harriers – an international organisation - has chapters all over Indonesia, including Bali and our neighbouring island of Lombok. Participants run a different mapped course every week, with one trek for the slower paced, and a slightly different version for the gung ho, both ending up at the same place for food and drink (mostly beer in Australia, far more subdued in Indo). If you know Hash, you’ll be delighted with the Bali version, but total newbies are also welcomed. The decided bonus of running in Bali is that each week reveals more beautiful scenery – often places you can’t reach any other way.

C/U/G-17 Jan. 18
I’ve steered away from the parking debate, because the news seems to move faster than this monthly column. But I can report that the well-organised Monkey Forest parking area is gaining popularity, and the Ubud shuttle operates regularly from there and around the main Ubud streets. The government plan to limit parking became operational just before Mount Agung first began to sizzle, and tourism has been quieter since, so perhaps that’s why the authorities haven’t clamped down fiercely on people parked in the wrong place – or at least, not as strongly as they first threatened to do. But for sure, Jalan Raya, Dewi Sita, Monkey Forest, Hanoman are still targeted; cars are often smothered with no parking stickers, and the parking police are letting down the front tyres of scooters and bikes parked on the road (though the footpath is apparently okay, which is just weird). But you can safely recommend that guests from down south use the shuttle. There are no obvious shuttle stop signs – nothing so simple lol – but the drivers will stop if you fl ag them down. They run every 20 minutes. A completely different update next month, perhaps. Who knows?

Legal battle over $250 million yacht seized in U.S. fraud probe Indonesia’s seizure of a luxury yacht wanted as part of a U.S. probe into the alleged multibillion-dollar theft of funds from a Malaysian state investment company is being challenged by the vessel’s owner, police said Monday. National police deputy director of economic crimes Daniel Silitonga said police haven’t handed the yacht over to the U.S. since its Feb. 28 seizure because they’re waiting for a court hearing after lawyers for the owner of the Cayman Islands-registered Equanimity began a legal challenge. “Until now we are still awaiting the summons for a hearing,” he said. “We are facing some legal issues that have to be resolved first.” The Equanimity, worth $250 million, is among assets the U.S. Department of Justice alleges were bought by Malaysian national Jho Low using money stolen from 1MBD, the Malaysian fund, and laundered through Singapore, Switzerland, Luxembourg and the U.S. Indonesian police seized the 300-foot yacht off Bali in a joint operation with the FBI. Silitonga said he didn’t yet know the basis of the lawsuit. A spokesman for Low told Malaysian media in early March that “rather than reflecting on the deeply flawed and politically-motivated allegations, the DoJ is continuing with its pattern of global overreach - all based on entirely unsupported claims of wrongdoing.” The Department of Justice filed a civil case in June seeking recovery of assets worth several hundred million dollars. Overall, it says more than $4.5 billion was stolen between 2009 and 2014 from 1MBD, which was set up by Malaysian Prime Minister Najib Razak to promote economic development. Low, an associate of Najib, had no formal role at the fund but considerable influence over it, according to the U.S. court documents. Equanimity’s lavish amenities include a helicopter landing pad, plunge pool, gymnasium and a cinema. It was built in 2014 by Netherlands yacht manufacturer Oceano, which received detailed instructions from Low about its outfitting, according to the civil case documents. Najib was embroiled in the scandal when it emerged that some $700 million had passed through his personal bank accounts. He denied any wrongdoing and said the money was a political donation from the Saudi royal family, which was later returned. [AP March 19, 2018] Short shrift to trash that drifts Beritabali.com reports that the Provincial Government of Bali has confirmed that a video that went viral on social media showing a diver and sea life overwhelmed by floating and semi-submerged trash was an incidental situation and not representative of water conditions at the off shore island of Nusa Penida. The spokesman and Officer for Protocol for the Province of Bali, Dewa Gede Mahendra Putra, said on Tuesday, March 13, 2018, that the trash depicted in the video made at Manta Point off Nusa Penida was the result of circular currents that caused trash to accumulated in a limited area. Dewa Mahendra confirmed that the Governor of Bali, represented by the Head of the Provincial Environmental Service Gede Suarjana, attended a coordination meeting in Jakarta led by the Coordinating Minister of Maritime Affairs Luhut Binsar Panjaitan where the handling of trash in Bali was a main topic. At that meeting, the results of an investigation carried out by a team from the Minister’s office assigned to research the much-publicized video filmed by English tourist Richard Horner were discussed. Dewa reported: “According to the data collected and observations made by the Coordination Ministers of Maritime Affairs team and discussions with related government agencies and environmental groups, the area of Manta Point depicted in the video was observed for 10 days from March 1st until March 10th.” The Provincial spokesman underlined that during the period covered by the survey, there was no report of a heavy trash presence resembling that recorded in Horner’s video. Moreover, Dewa Mahendra said that the survey team also met directly with the man who uploaded the video - Englishman Richard Horner at Manta Point, who freely admitted that he has frequently dived at Manta Point and had never on any other occasion encountered trash in the quantities recorded in his video. An expert from the prestigious Bandung Technology Institute (ITB) confirmed to the survey team that at the time the video was made Nusa Penida was subjected to seasonal winds and current conditions moving from the north through the Straits of Lombok. The ITB expert said that in combination with tidal flows, trash in the ocean can appear in great quantities in only a matter of hours. At the same time, Dewa Mahendra confirmed that the government was sufficiently moved by Horner’s video and concerns expressed by the Province of Bali to install trash traps on rivers in Bali to prevent discarded refuse from flowing into the oceans. To date, said Mahendra, trash traps have been installed on four rivers in Bali with an appreciable positive effect. The Government is also educating the public to dispose of their trash in a more responsible way. [www.balidiscovery.com March 20, 2018] A rest area on a 12-km toll road DenPost reports that PT Jasa Marga Bali Tol – the operators of the Bali Toll Road is moving ahead with plans to create a rest area as a tourist attraction on the toll road connection between Sanur and Bali’s Airport and Nusa Dua. Detailed plans for the “rest area” have been designed for the rest stop to be named “Bedawangnala.” The plan to move ahead with the Bedawangnala Project were announced on Wednesday, March 14, 2018, by the President Director Akhmad Tito Karim of PT Jasa Marga Bali Tol (JBT), during a conference to announce the closing of the toll road over the Nyepi period in Bali. At that conference, Karim admitted that plans to build the “rest area” have been delayed due to the Mount Agung volcano and the number of tourists traveling on the toll road. At the same time, inflationary pressures have made it problematic to increase the toll rates charged to vehicles using the toll road. Therefore, in order to enhance revenues, the JBT will create a new tourist attraction via the “rest area” that the toll operators believe will increase the amount of traffic on the roadway. “We have completed the design, all that remains is to coordinate with the Provincial Government and those who have authority over development of the toll road. This is feasible because the rules stipulate that a rest area must be built at a minimum once every 50 kilometers on a public toll road. The new attraction will be built over the ocean. We will soon contact the Badung Regency and the Province of Bali regarding the required permits. In accordance with the original plans the rest stop will be called ‘Bedawangnala,” said Tito. Bedawangnala is the name of a giant turtle in Bali-Hindu mythology that bears the weight of the entire planet on its shell. [www.balidiscovery.com March 20, 2018] Three Turkish nationals involved in a sophisticated ATM skimming scheme are busted by Bali police Police in Bali have arrested three Turkish nationals believed to be have defrauded the ATM accounts of some 12 customers of Bank Mandiri over a period of only two days. As reported by NusaBali, in custody are Kimis Dogan (43), Mentes Mehmet Ali (29), dan Koc Tayfun (35). The director of the criminal division at provincial police headquarters, Police Commissioner Sang Made Mahendra Jaya, said on Monday, March 3, 2018, that the trio had admitted to stealing data from the accounts of 12 people living in Bali. Adding: “We continue to investigate how many victims had their pin numbers taken by the three suspects. What’s clear, we have evidence of 83 ATM-like cards now in our custody. These cards were used to steal the data of bank customers. In addition, we have 4 computer routers than we have also seized.” Commissioner Mahendra Jaya said two of the three men were caught in the act at at ATM at Canggu Mart on Jalan Batu Mejan Desa Canggu in North Kuta on Friday, March 9, 2018, shortly after midnight. Police say the three are part of an international crime syndicate with each of the three having their individual area of expertise in skimming and misusing ATM codes. Police say data and pin number stolen from the ATMs is immediately communicated via the Internet to the headquarters of their crime network in Turkey. Two specialized pieces of equipment are used on a targeted ATM machine. One instrument is installed at the back of the ATM unit and another over the keyboard. A sophisticated small camera is also installed to record the unsuspecting victim’s pin number. Once an ATM customer has completed a transaction, the details of the ATM number and pin-code are captured by the crime syndicate in Turkey. Meanwhile, the 3 accomplices working in Bali are able to observe via their handphones the online banking activity and bank balances of their victims. Once the data has been successfully captured in Turkey, new codes were sent to the 3 men in Bali permitting them to make withdrawals from local ATM machines using preset codes on electronic cards created in Turkey. The three Turkish men told police how they traveled frequently in and out of Bali, Thailand and Malaysia in order to fleece ATM customers across the region. The men’s last visit to Bali was in January-February 2018, but they told police that they only began skimming ATM machines on March 7-8, 2018. “During two days of March 7-8, 2018, they managed to rob 12 bank customers in Bali. One day later, we managed to capture them together with physical evidence of their crimes that were brought from China or purchased in Bali,” said Mahendra Jaya. Among the items seized by police were 4 routers, 4 cameras, 80 electronic cards, a data cable, 5 laptop computers, 2 TP links, silicone glue, a WiFi mobile camera, and 4 handphones. Koc Tayfun and Mentes Mehmet Ali were apprehended at the ATM Canggu Mart at 00:15 a.m. on March 9, 2018. Two hours later, at 2:15 am police arrested Kimis Dogan at a hotel on Jalan Dewi Sartika in Kuta. Police received reports from the regional office of Bank Mandiri who detected suspicious transactions emanating from the ATM in Canggu. Bank officials using surveillance CCTV cameras recorded one of the men installing equipment on the ATM. A source at Police Headquarters in Bali said: “Based on CCTV recordings a suspicious foreign national used the Mandiri ATM at the Canggu Mart on Wednesday, March 7, 2018 where the man had installed a skimming device. This information was forwarded to the police who immediately commenced an investigation.” Police placed the ATM under surveillance resulting in the detection of Koc Tayfun and Mentes Mehmet Ali trying to remove the skimmer in the early hours of March 9, 2018. Police swooped in to make an arrest of the two men who quickly gave up the name and location of the third man, Kimis Dogan, staying in a hotel on Jalan Dewi Sartika in Kuta. It is expected that the trio will be charged under a section of the criminal code dealing with cybercrime punishable by up to 7 years imprisonment. [www.balidiscovery.com March 20, 2018]
Emergency measles alert issued after man flies from Bali to Australia An urgent measles alert has been issued for airline passengers after a man with the disease flew from Bali to Australia. The Department of Health and Human Services issued the alert after the man contracted the disease and was hospitalised in Melbourne on Sunday. The man fell unwell after flying from Bali to Sydney and onto Melbourne at the weekend. He flew on Qantas flight QF44 from Denpasar to Sydney before boarding QF415 from Sydney to Melbourne. He landed in Sydney at 6.25am and in Melbourne at 10.35am, Nine News reported. Health experts warn he was likely contagious during both flights and could have passed the disease onto scores of people. ‘We are working with airline officials to identify and contact passengers who shared both the international flight into Sydney and the domestic flight into Melbourne,’ Dr Finn Romanes said. He urged anyone with concerns to visit a doctor or hospital immediately. ‘People who were at Melbourne Airport on Saturday March 10, particularly around the domestic baggage collection area, who develop illness from now until Wednesday April 4 should alert their doctor or hospital emergency department.’ The department also warned he was potentially contagious when he ate at north-east Melbourne restaurant Lentil as Anything about 2pm on Saturday. [Daily Mail March 19, 2018] Bali phone scams: meet ‘Sam’ and her dodgy timeshare mates There is this thing going on in Bali, and most probably elsewhere, where hotel guests receive a phone call in their room from “a friend”. Said chum will have asked for you (and in this case, me) by full name and no doubt charmed the operator into connecting the call. Which is how I come to be speaking to “Samantha”, who sounds as if she has stepped straight off the set of EastEnders and is telling me I have won a free holiday “opportunity” in Bali. “Do you like Bali, Susan Gail?” No one has ever called me by my full name, not even my parents. Dad was in charge of registering my birth and Mother never forgave him. It was meant to be Gaye, with a classy “e” and everything. But “Samantha” knows none of this. I point out I am already in Bali and like it very much. But how does she know me and, crucially, where I’m staying? “We work closely with the Indonesian government,” she tells me, in a voice that is becoming ever so slightly aggressive. When higher authorities are cited, I always feel irrationally guilty. Does the government somehow know how many ikat cushion covers I have stashed in my bag? Is there a legal limit to the number of pineapple-shaped soap dishes and lemon grass candles that a holidaymaker may purchase? And let’s not get started on the purloined Etro soaps from a certain Jimbaran resort that are perfuming the darker recesses of my suitcase. As “Samantha” continues her spiel, I move around with the phone and look for tiny cameras or listening devices. Crikey, have I been secretly watched late at night swooning over that perky commentator John Avlon on New Day? In my defense of star crushes, CNN is the only channel that seems to work at most hotels I visit. John and I go way back. “So, Susan Gail, when are you available for your free appointment?” It transpires to be a timeshare scheme of some kind (how terribly 1980s) and “Samantha” eventually slams down the receiver when I refuse to play the game. A Bali-based Australian friend tells me it’s widely believed someone at Denpasar airport could be in cahoots with “Samantha” and her dodgy mates, providing information from our entry forms. Like immigration documents almost everywhere, one of the questions to complete is where you are staying. Gotcha. My Bali friend says whenever she re-enters Indonesia she always fills the form with the name of a closed property, such as Pan Pacific Nirwana, shut since last July and reportedly now in the clutches of Trump Hotels. Better still, she says, just write Bali Hai Hotel; there’s one in Broome and another in Acapulco, apparently. So there you go. Your call. [The Australian March 17, 2018] Harper Bazaar singles out 8 spas for ‘Star Spa’ status in Bali Romy Oltuski writing for Harpers Bazaar has just published an article focused on Bali titled: “8 Over-the-Top Spa Experiences You’ll Only Find in Bali?” In the words of Oltuski: “. . .those who consider the spa to be their Mecca, Bali is the world capital of spoiling yourself rotten.” The 8 following spas in Bali warrant special mention: Spa on the Rocks at AYANA COMO Shambhala Estate, near Ubud Four Seasons Sayan, Ubud Anantara, Uluwatu Mandapa, A Ritz-Carlton Reserve, near Ubud Alila Villas, Uluwatu Banyan Tree, Ungasan Amandari, near Ubud [www.balidiscovery.com March 20, 2018]

17 From Bali to Ecuador: In search of the Shaman Masters I have lived on Bali since 2002, married to a Balinese and in a sense, married to this rich culture with all it’s magic and wonder. When I chose to move here 16 years ago, I had no idea the twists and turns my life would take. There seemed to be another plan for me that was carefully laid out by the Universe. This plan was and continues to be an incredible journey into the world of healing and transformation for myself and others. I have worked with several Shaman Masters here on Bali both local and western. My path to become a shaman continues to unfold with new challenges and gifts that are bestowed upon me in both ordinary and non ordinary reality. There has always been a deep yearning within my soul to go deeper into the mysteries of our existence and truly understand how we are not just living in the Universe, but the universe is actually living within us. Through Shamanism, I’ve discovered many amazing tools for empowering my life and many others who I work with. And so the journey to learn more continues to inspire me — to reach even further beyond Bali to South America, where the first ever Andes Summit will be held bringing together ten of the most prominent indigenous teachers, healers, and community leaders, with people from all around the world. The Andes Summit mission is to initiate a new paradigm for Earth and Humanity Healing and it will be held on the High Andes of Ecuador. “It is befitting for such an important conference to gather at the “Middle of the World” where the South and the North meets at the Equator Line, as two equal partners. Each will bring its unique point of views on the vital ways we must take to sustain the future of the Earth and Humanity,” said Itzhak Beery, bestselling author, the founder of ShamanPortal.org, and The Andes Summit.
C/E/I-14 March 18
In this unprecedented spiritual and healing event, happening over 8 days and 7 nights, participants will discuss the pressing issues of our time. A variety of diverse Master Classes will be offered in which the Andean Shamans will share their ancient knowledge that has been passed on from generation to generation for 1,000’s of years. Participants will also get to experience personal healing ceremonies in the Shaman healer’s homes, as well as sacred indigenous rituals. We will engage and dance in the sacred Inca’s Inti Raymi (Festival of the Sun) in their villages, and take intimate nature hikes to the breathtaking lakes, waterfalls, and mountaintops. Additionally, optional Plant Medicine (Ayahuasca and Huachuma) visioning tea ceremonies will be offered as well. Born into generations of Yachaks (Healers-Shamans), each of these powerful elders will be sharing their ancestral wisdom, Andean Cosmology, distinct healing modalities and techniques, and the prophesies that their culture is built upon. They genuinely recognize the vital responsibility they hold to impart their knowledge to the technologically advanced cultures that are in economical, societal, and spiritual peril. These –Condor Elders– wish to share their wisdom with the people of the North/West –The Eagles– who need to restore their connection to nature, the elements and communities, the ancient ways, not only to sustain the health of the Earth, but also to gain physical, emotional and spiritual health, and most importantly, to open their hearts to global peace, cooperation and harmony.
C/E/I-14 March 18
Discussions and Master Classes will include: 7 Feathers of the Condor: 7 Teachings in the Way of the Andean Sages - Usai-The 5th Element - The Healing Sounds of the Andes - The Andes Sacred Healing Movements - Opening the Feminine Heart - The Tsachilas Ancestral Healing - Midwifery and Women’s Healthcare - La Limpia: The Andean Rite - The Path of Light: The Healing Tradition - The Power of Mushuk Nina-–Sacred Fire This will be a life changing event which will inspire all those who choose to join. I’m curious to see what the similarities and differences are between Balinese Shamans and the Andean Shamans. “All indigenous people have knowledge about how to preserve the earth and keep life in balance. In the western world, we are not living in a balanced way. There are very aggressive societies that are focused on profits and the material world. The beauty of this Andes Summit is to bring the community together and share important information about how we can all live a more ‘heart-centered’ life,” said Itzhak Beery. The Andean Shamans want to teach the people of the north their wisdom, because many of their younger generations are no longer interested in learning their ancient ways; they are more interested in all the material trappings of the west. Thus, the Shaman masters realize that in order for them to preserve this ancient knowledge, they need to pass this on to the people from the North. Itzhak Beery hopes that by the end of the summit that we can all become ambassadors and go back to wherever we are from and share this knowledge with our families and communities, spreading the wisdom of the Shaman Masters throughout the world. Now more than ever, we all need to rediscover how to connect with our soul and live a meaningful life. Shamanism provides many tools for us to do this with ease and step into our power. 21 Ballad of the Bag-snatching Motorbike Cowboy It’s Round-up time again... Bali-based French chiropractor witnessed a motor-bike rider bag-snatch up close and personal recently and tried to do something about it. Alas, to no avail. Within minutes, following the incident he reported the circumstances on Facebook as follows: “Today at 3.00 pm in broad daylight I witnessed a bagsnatching incident on the corner of Jalan Kesari and Jalan Tamblingan. A big guy on a black Vario motorbike snatched a bag from Russian tourists and took off at high speed on Jl. Tamblingan, heading North. I tried to chase him screaming “Jambret!”, but no luck. Nobody tried to help either, which is pretty sad. Safety is a community effort!!! I was unable to get his plate number as he took off really fast... The tourists were quite shaken up... understandably so! To the authorities (banjar, police, etc.): reading from similar reports in Facebook, Jl. Kesari seems to be a well-known place for this kind of incident, so perhaps having regular patrols could be a deterrent?”. Are any of us surprised by this? Hardly. Is Bali now becoming a tourist hot spot in Asia when it comes to theft and violence? No, it is not. At least not compared to India, the Philippines and Thailand. But that’s nothing for any of us to be complacent about. Compared to Singapore, Hong Kong, Tokyo, crimes against property and person are not uncommon here and should be a concern to foreign residents, tourists and the authorities alike. But Pattaya, Bali is not. Not yet anyway. Thailand’s raunchy beach resort, however much it tries to re-brand itself, can’t shake its rap as the sex, crime and suicide capital of Asia. There’s no question, if you go looking for trouble in Pattaya you’ll probably find it. Liquored up, out on the town late looking for sex, drugs or excitement can end badly. As it can pretty much anywhere. But anyone, resident or tourist, exercising a reasonable level of common sense is unlikely to be targeted, even in Pattaya. As I say, let us not be complacent. Levels of violent crime in Bali involving foreign residents and tourists can and do occur, but are mercifully few. Petty crime on the other hand is alive and well. You are much more likely to have your bag snatched by a biker in Bali than you are in Pattaya. You only have to Google bag-snatching and Bali to see there appears to have been an uptick. It may seem so, but actually I doubt it. In relative terms it was ever so – ever since the jet planes first fl ew in. In the 23 years my wife and I have had a house in Sanur we have, in chronological order, experienced: theft from our parked car (Jl. Tamblingan, Sanur); theft from our car on by-pass after leaving airport following “nail-in-the-tire” job; and my shoulder satchel snatched by motor bike rider while walking on Jl. Mertasari, Sanur. To date we have been spared a night-time house break in. There was a spate of these in our area in the decade leading up to 2000. That said, we have had two fairly heavy instances of internal theft involving staff (probably the most distressing of these incidents). Given the length of time we have been here, have we been lucky or unlucky, or is it par for the course? I couldn’t say. From another perspective, anyone visiting New York City in the 1970s and 1980s knew that as a pedestrian they stood a good chance of getting mugged, as indeed my wife was mid-morning on 5th Avenue. Through the 1980s and 90s I travelled to London frequently and it is interesting to note that, despite the average Londoner appearing on CCTV about 30 times per day, everyone I knew had had their homes broken into, often more than once. Nine
times out of ten the villain got away with it according to Greater London police statistics. On my last visit in 2010 we had our money and passports lifted from the safe in our hotel room (an inside job if ever there was one). The police came and took the details. They were quite open about admitting that no actual investigation would be made. I recently returned from an extended trip to France where I borrowed a push bike. The owner gave me three bicycle locks and, amused by my incredulity, explained: one to secure the bike frame to something immoveable, and two to secure each wheel to the bike itself. Very into bicycling, the French...

On a scale of 1 to 10 I would give Bali a 5, putting it squarely in mid-range. For one of the world’s premier tourist desinations, attracting some 4 million international visitors, with a sizeable foreign resident population and God knows how many local tourists, that’s not so bad. There is violence. The possibility of terrorist acts is present, as indeed it is in many countries, but the murder rate is low and, so far as foreigners are concerned, really only happens involving matters of business (read property) or affairs of the heart. We had a classic example of the latter in Sanur not so long ago. And, on occasion, things can go fatally wrong in the course of a motorbike bag-snatch. Sexual violence against female travellers does occur but is rare, unlike India and Thailand, where it is a significant problem. The problem in Bali is petty crime. Most particularly, bag-snatching by young men on motor bikes preying on foreigners, either walking the streets or riding a push bike or motor bike. Female tourists being the preferred targets. I haven’t heard tell of any recent re-occurence of the airport “nail-in-the-tire” job and the night break-ins, once so common in Sanur and elswhere, and which could end fatally, thankfully seem to be a thing of the past.

There are obvious measures to take to avoid becoming a victim of bag-snatchers. Leaving your passport and the bulk of your cash in a safe place and not carrying it on your person is number one. As a pedestrian, use a shoulder bag where possible, secured with the strap across your body and bag hanging on the side away from the road. Stay aware on the streets and if you sense you are being targeted, stop and look squarely at the suspect(s) with a firm hold on your bag. Odds on, if they’re up to no good, they’ll pass on you, as you’ve clearly clocked them and may have noted details of the vehicle and number. On two-wheels pretty much the same goes. If you must go out at night, particularly late at night, be very very cautious, particularly if you have been visiting the clubs and drinking. You may have been “spotted”. Lastly, hard as it may be, if you can’t hang on to your bag, let it go. Do not allow yourself to be dragged on the road behind a motorbike. Shout blue murder all the while. What Patrick Monsarrat says about the banjar and police, and our participation, is right. More could be done. The police have been fully motorised for over a decade now and have the means to take effective action against these motor bike punks and, in a town configured like Sanur, it wouldn’t be so hard to do. I’m always a bit amused when I pedal past what I’ve heard fondly descrbed as Sanur PD’s fundraiser, a jamboree staged periodically for the benefit of passing motorbikes on Sanur’s green belt right outside the Hyatt. Quite a turnout it is. Maybe some of the hardware and energy could be deployed with this too? Just a thought...

JAPANESE ENCEPHALITIS I have been contacted by many parents on the Island regarding the current Japanese Encephalitis vaccine program being offered at all schools here. It is unclear why this program has been offered, as despite contacting several doctors at Sanglah and in general practice, no one has heard of any current cases of the disease. However recent data suggests that Japanese Encephalitis numbers are on the rise. WHO figures show 22 cases were reported on the Island in 2015, not a lot really, however it is quadruple the cases reported in 2014. While cases are relatively few Japanese Encephalitis is of some concern due to the severity of the disease. What Is Japanese Encephalitis? J.E. is a rare but serious viral illness that affects the brain. It primarily affects children between the ages of 2-10 years, the elderly, or individuals with lowered immune systems. Case fatality rates range from 0.3-60% (average 30 %), and approximately 30% of those survivors will be permanently brain damaged in some way. How does Japanese Encephalitis present? Some people that are exposed to the disease will have very mild, or no symptoms at all. Those people will not go on to develop serious consequences of the disease; indeed they will probably never know that they had the disease. Those that suffer severe acute infection would show any or all of the following signs: • Abrupt onset of high fever. • Headache. • Loss of appetite. • Pain behind the eyes. • Neck stiffness • Disorientation or stupor. • Convulsions or twitches / tremors. • Coma. • Paralysis. PERSONS EXHIBITING ANY OF THE ABOVE SYMPTOMS MUST SEEK MEDICAL ATTENTION IMMEDIATELY. How do people get Japanese Encephalitis? J.E. is spread by vector transmission, the Culex Mosquito being the carrier. It cannot be transmitted directly from one
NC/He/I-28 March 18
NC/NV/U-28 March 18
person to the next, (i.e. you cannot get it from touching or kissing an infected person). Mosquitoes become infected by feeding on pigs or wild birds infected with the J.E virus. Infected mosquitoes then transmit the virus to humans during the feeding process. The Culex mosquito typically inhabits rice paddies, and other waterways. This mosquito is essentially an outdoor mosquito, and they are most active in the late evenings or at night. Not all Culex Mozzies are carriers of the disease. Only mosquitoes that have been infected can infect you. The Vaccine A vaccine is available against the J.E. virus. The primary course of the vaccine is said to last approximately 2 years, therefore most authorities recommend single booster shots at 2-year intervals following the primary course. There have been nasty side effects reported following injection with the J.E. Vaccine. About 0.6 % of patients have developed severe rashes and swelling immediately after the vaccine and up to 10 days after receiving the vaccine. It is wise to remain close to medical facilities for up to 10 days after the last dose. (No remote area travel in this period). The good news is that the vaccine has a high efficacy. This means that once the course has been completed, it gives a high (almost 100%) immunogenic response. It is very effective. I usually only recommend the vaccine for anyone that may have a pig farm close their home. As to whether you accept the vaccine for your child is ultimately your decision. Apparently the free vaccine being offered in schools under the Government program is from China. (The Chengdu Institute of Biological Products). International SOS does stock an alternative JE vaccine. (I believe their vaccine is made in Thailand). If you live next to a pig farm or bird sanctuary I would recommend this vaccine for all family members. So…If I do get Japanese Encephalitis, how is it treated? Firstly, there is no curative treatment for J.E. (i.e. No magic pill, injection etc. that will cure it). J.E. is treated symptomatically by reducing the fever, analgesics for headache, sedatives for seizures and specialized intravenous therapy to reduce cerebral swelling. As usual the best strategy is prevention, which starts with
mosquito control. How do we prevent the spread of J.E.? Firstly, don’t invite this troublesome insect into your area by providing it with ideal breeding grounds. • Make sure that your garden and surrounding area are free of water catchments, or that water containers are covered. • Keep larvae eating fish, such as guppies, in ponds. • Use chemical larvicides in ponds, drains or other water catchments (e.g. Abate). • Remove garbage or unnecessary pots, bottles, cans etc from the garden area. • Lush garden areas should be fogged regularly in the monsoon season. …and secondly, don’t get bitten! • Mozzie plug-ins or vapor mats can be used indoors in the early mornings and late afternoons during the wet season. • Mosquito nets and screens can be used in problem areas. Babies should always be protected by cot, or pram covers. • Wear long sleeved, loose light colored clothing while walking in garden areas. • Personal repellants may be used; however, they should be used with caution in the very young, or the elderly.

24 Rus Alit: Appropriate Technology Pioneer
Rus Alit was born in Sangketan village in Tabanan, the 11th child in a farming family. After graduating from high school he had the good fortune to study in New Zealand for three years. Pak Alit has three decades of experience teaching appropriate technology that benefited the poor and needy in more than 30 different countries around world. In 1987 he founded Bali Appropriate Technology Institute (BATI) in West Bali. Water management has been Pak Alit’s main focus, but he is also adept at road and bridge construction and sustainable agriculture. Pak Alit and his wife Made have a ten-year old son, Peter. The family divides their time between Perth in Western Australia and Bali to carry on the work of BATI where he serves as director. What are your interests? Swimming, playing music (organ, piano, accordion) and landscape painting. What’s your educational background? I studied at a sport college, a fisheries college, STM (Sekolah Teknik Menengah), teacher’s college (SMA level) but didn’t graduate from any. I also completed two years of study at a bible school in Wellington, New Zealand. What jobs have you had in your life? I was a rice farmer prior to traveling abroad. In New Zealand, I worked at a milk factory as a fork lift operator and laboratory assistance. Until 1996, I’ve traveled in many countries and across the whole of Indonesia installing appropriate technology systems. My main job in each place was to identify the grass root needs of people and to design appropriate technologies to answer those needs. How did you first become interested in appropriate technology? Seeing practical technologies that actually work has always captivated me. From the very first moment I struck a match to light a bio gas stove, I was hooked. Another exciting moment was when I pushed the valve on my first homemade Ram Pump and saw it jump into action. I still remember the tears of happiness in the eyes of the villagers when they saw water fl ow uphill into their village for the first time. Have you done much international travel? For 15 years from 1982 to 1996 I traveled the world working as a consultant for the humanitarian organization World Vision, covering all major countries in the Pacific, Asia and Africa. During those years, I helped rural communities build roads, bridges, irrigation canals, energy efficient stoves, water purification and food preservation systems. What did you do after all those years of travel? Traveling the world listening to people taught me to better understand what people needed. I was able to work with villagers in all sorts of fields and to broaden my expertise. Soon after I returned from New Zealand in 1972, I became directly involved with helping my own village. I first introduced a bio gas system, so housewives could cook with gas. I set up hydraulic ram pumps to bring water to hilltop villages. My team has also constructed dams in the area to divert water for irrigation. What book has had a big influence on you? A friend Thomas Fricke, who has worked with small farmers for more than 30 years, gave me Appropriate Technology Source Book (VITA) that contained many economical technologies that inspired me. But my very best training has been from farmers. I strive to simplify their methods to make them work even better. I admire their old ways of life. Until relatively recently, the Balinese had lived their lives in an appropriate manner for generations. Now modernization has brought greed to people as well as destruction of the environment.
lives could be so dramatically changed through technology. In 1987, I was finally able to realize my long held dream of establishing a center where students could come to study my innovations. The whole world has such a great need for down to earth technologies. What are you trying to accomplish? C/He/G-28 Feb. 18
Life-changing skills are not only obtainable at university. Information on many technologies are available on the Internet and also available in books, though it takes hands on experience to make them really work. The short courses that BATI offers take just a few days and can be understood when taught intensively by seeing and participating. Now our graduates are spreading our technologies within Indonesia and all over the world. People are installing ram pumps in Timor Leste, Eastern Indonesia, Latin America, Africa, India and even in the Pacific. Where do you get funding? Initially I raised money for my yayasan myself working as an international consultant in various fields, but we need funds to expand. We welcome any donors who believe in my approach. Is BATI engaged in commercial enterprise? We have invested in a community development and job creation program through virgin coconut oil production that employs ten villagers who would otherwise be unemployed.
C/HE/U-17 Jan 18
What is the cheapest and quickest technology that can be adapted to make lives easier? Slow sand filters and energy efficient stoves are the simplest and fastest labor and time saving devices that can be put in a home. An expat told me that he uses our slow sand filter to purify city water before he stores it. He says that it not only eliminates impurities but also gets rid of the smell of chlorine. Our water purifier is the most popular with farmers. For hilltop communities, a ram pump coupled with a water purification system are almost necessities. Of all BATI’s achievements, what are you the proudest of? The 60 ram pumps that have now been in operation in Timor Leste since 2005 when I taught a group of students how to build them. Also our method of underground rain water catchment that we started in Rwanda is now spreading to more places in Africa. C/He/I-20 Dec 17

To spray, or not to spray, that is the question ‘Hi, I notice you receive many a question on what sprays will sort frangipani rust and although your advice on using natural products and good house-keeping to combat the rust is good advice, in my experience using your advice only slightly helps in trying to eradicate the problem which I have been trying to do over the past 4 years to date. The trees are no better off than when I first started etc. However, I have finally managed to completely eradicate the rust problem and haven’t had any frangipani rust problems for the past 3 months and although you may not approve of what I used, or how I o b t a i n e d t h e s p r a y, however through desperation felt I really had no choice but to do so, the following is what I used. At the beginning of last year on a visit to Australia I purchased the following: Scorpio, which proved to be the best, very expensive and was very hard to obtain.Rust Rid, although takes longer is extremely good and will completely eradicate the rust as the diluted mix its poured onto the soil at base of trees, so is eventually absorbed into the tree itself and in time completely knocking the rust on the head. Rust-Rid can also be sprayed onto the leaves etc. Triforine, also extremely good product and “almost” eliminated the rust. I won’t bore you with the process as to how I came to these recommendations, but over past 12 months I carried out many experiments and I can safely say I have finally eradicated frangipani rust from all my trees. Your readers may be interested in this? Barry’ Thank you for the contribution regarding the dreaded frangipani rust, much appreciated - hence the reason I have passed it on. Mancozeb or anything containing sulphur are also highly recommended among the commercial applications. Neem oil is also effective, and whilst organic is nevertheless still very toxic. Since frangipani is a mainstay of the tropical garden I regularly receive questions about its care and maintenance. Whilst aware of the chemical controls, personally I advocate organic or the least toxic solutions if possible. But it’s not for me to play gatekeeper (knowledge is power) and I’ll let readers weigh up the pros and cons to decide their own preference to toxic chemicals or organic solutions. Yes, it is true that in most cases the homemade remedies will require a few minutes preparation and more diligent follow up, and since everyone seems to be time poor these days I can see the attraction in reaching for the bottle of poison, and if it’s the difference between saving your tree or letting it die then
by all means do what you have to do - I just like to keep you informed on all options. Back in the 80s when I was a mini green thumb I had a veggie patch and loved watching a popular weekly Australian gardening show ‘Burkes Backyard’ of which I’m sure many of the ‘Aussie’ expat readers are familiar with. Fast forward to the present, Burke has recently endured a scandal of his own in the wake of the Weinstein affair but it’s not for me to judge and that’s not even the point of why I bring this up. Along with the show Burke released numerous books and a monthly magazine aligned with the TV production on all things gardening. Whenever readers would have a question about bugs, pests, plant disease etc a chemically toxic solution was always the answer, always! Spray with this or that, usually a Yates product or one of the other well-known brands that would co-incidentally have full page ads littered throughout the magazine. Organic solutions were but a mirage, within the parched landscape of the Bayer chemical range. I used to think to myself even as kid that this is total BS there are other ways you can do it. Yet the ‘guru’ who everyone looked to proclaimed in an authoritative tone that, ‘This is truly the only way!’ As a teenager I came to realise that it’s all about commercial agreements and narrow solutions. Kind of like how the doctor prescribes you pills for your blood pressure and lets you keep on drinking beer and eating hamburgers…when he could really tell you to fix your diet and there’d be no need for the pills <unfortunately this also doesn’t fit within the commercial narrative of what has ostensibly has become the ‘business’ of health care, it makes me suspicious as to how much they really do ‘care’? > Which brings me back to Hippocrates and the saying, ‘let food be thy medicine and medicine be thy food’ which is so true and the reason why I believe it’s advantageous to grow as much of your own food or buy organic where possible. I can’t accept that fruit and vegetables sprayed with poison are going to be just as good for you as the naturally grown type. I digress [end rant here]. At the heart of why I bang on about organic is that there are already enough choices, advertisements, garden gurus and hardware outlets advising and giving you the toxic route. I’m just here to offer alternatives and then you can decide. Indeed, on many occasions an infestation of bugs or fungus may be so severe that chemical treatment is your only option, there is no judgement here, just remember toxic chemicals have consequences - that reminds me of another famous quote: ‘The true meaning of life is to plant trees under whose shade you do not expect to sit.’
C/Bm/I-22 Nov 17
this factor combined with the ease at which it spreads via spores on the wind from neighbouring properties deems it notoriously difficult to control. Poor growing conditions such as a waterlogged soil can also contribute, make sure your soil is well drained and plants well ventilated. By and large though, in the wet tropics plant fungus comes with the territory. Yep, unfortunately you must take the bad with the good! As for organic solutions, the first step is the timely removal of affected leaves at the first signs, which may on its own solve the problem. Improving air circulation around plants may also help. The need to spray only occurs once the problem is raging out of control. Baking Soda Mix a few tablespoons of sodium bicarbonate, bi-carb soda or baking soda (all the same thing by another name) with 1L water, a few tablespoons of cooking oil and a dash of dish soap. The oil allows the spray to coagulate and stick, the soap likewise, also acting as a foaming agent meaning you get a slightly better coverage. Otherwise the bi-carb/water on its will quickly run straight off, and the benefits lost. It is known that fungus prefers an acidic environment, alkalizing the blood and body at a cellular level helps ward off fungal conditions in humans, hence the alkalizing effect of the baking soda is thought to be responsible for its effectiveness against frangipani rust. You can pick up 500g - 1kg of baking soda for just a few bucks in the supermarket aisle where you find sugar, salt and spices, it is after all primarily a baking additive with many alternative uses. It’s also a fantastic cleaner for the kitchen and bathroom, it’s even in toothpaste! Put it in a hot detox bath, or even soak your hand in it to remove a troublesome splinter - try it, it’s amazing. And please note that baking powder is not the same thing as baking soda, otherwise you’ll be disappointed. Epsom salts which have a high pH when dissolved in water may also be effective, the benefits within the garden of which could be the subject of an entirely separate article. Hopefully next time we discuss frangipani we can talk about the brighter side of things, such as grafting multiple plants together to produce a multicoloured plumeria - if you have the initiative give it a go the results are amazing. I have covered frangipani rust a few times in the past, read the links supplied for more detailed information. https://www.baliadvertiser.biz/dealing-with-frangipani-rust/ https://www.baliadvertiser.biz/frangipani-2/

I’ve been bored with my breakfasts. This definitely spices up my mornings! And it could easily be served for lunch as well. Toast or corn tortillas are a must to soak up the juices. Or if you really feel adventurous serve it over soft polenta.
Eggs in a Spicy Tomato Bath Serves 2-3
Ingredients:
- 6 shallots, thinly sliced - 2 cloves garlic, minced - 1 400 g can of tomatoes - 2 Tbl. fresh cilantro, chopped - 1/2 tsp. ground cayenne - 1 1/2 tsp. roasted ground cumin (you can use regular cumin but dry roasting it first in a heavy skillet brings out a richer fl avor) - 1/2 tsp. ground coriander - 2 tsp. dried oregano - 2 tsp. ground smoked paprika - 1/2 tsp. sea salt - 1 roasted red bell pepper, deseeded and chopped (I keep these in the freezer) - 2-3 shakes of chipotle Tabasco (optional) - 1 Tbl. olive oil - 4 large eggs - cilantro for topping - 4 Tbl. Parmesan or other grated cheese for topping - avocado for topping

Directions: Into a blender container or food processor, combine the shallots, garlic, tomatoes, cilantro, cayenne, cumin, coriander, oregano, smoked paprika and the salt. Add a few drops of Tabasco Chipotle sauce if you like and run the blender just until everything is chopped but still chunky. In a heavy skillet heat 1 tablespoon olive oil over medium high heat. Add chopped bell peppers and heat through. Pour the sauce from the blender or food processor into the skillet and bring to a simmer, lowering the heat to medium. Make 4 indentations in the sauce and crack an egg into each of these wells. Cover, preferably with a glass lid so you can see what is happening in the skillet. Let the eggs cook until the whites are set and the yellows are still runny (unless you prefer harder cooked eggs). Remove the lid and garnish with the cilantro, cheese, and avocado. Take the skillet to the table to serve or if you prefer serve the eggs on a plate and garnish them individually on the plate. If you really want to splash out serve the eggs over creamy polenta.

Heatstroke in Dogs Heatstroke sounds fairly innocuous but is a fatal condition in dogs, as they cannot lose body heat by sweating as we humans do. Body temperature may be increased because of an infection (fever), but it may also increase because of hot and/or humid conditions outside. An increased body temperature caused by environmental conditions is commonly referred to as hyperthermia or heatstroke. Living in a warm climate such as Bali, it is especially important owners are educated about this danger. Each month a couple of cases of heat stroke are brought to Sunset Vet, and the only chance of survival is to intervene medically before the situation is beyond the point of no return. Heatstroke a life threatening condition and requires immediate treatment. A dog’s normal body temperature is 38.3-39.2°C and any time the body temperature is higher than 40°C, a true emergency exists. Heatstroke generally occurs when dogs are left with inadequate ventilation in hot vehicles. However, it may also occur in other situations, including: • When the dog is left outdoors in hot/humid conditions with out adequate shade • When the dog is exercised in hot/humid weather • When left in a car on a relatively cool day, the temperature inside a vehicle may actually increase by 5 degrees Celsius within one hour There are other factors that can also make a dog predisposed to heatstroke: • Obesity • Short nosed breeds with breathing difficulties such as pugs, bulldogs etc. • Dogs with cardiac or respiratory diseases How can I tell if my dog has heatstroke? Initially your dog will just appear a little distressed, panting excessively and becoming restless. As the body temperature increases, the dog may start hyper salivating and drool saliva from the nose and/or mouth. The dog may be unsteady on his/ her feet, or lie down and be reluctant to stand up or move. If you lift the dog’s lip and inspect the gums, you may see a change in colour away from the normal pale pink to become a bluish purple or a bright brick red. This is due to poor oxygen delivery.
down with the time. Note that if it is ‘upper normal’ there is still the possibility that you caught it early and it is on the rise, so it is wise to repeat the measurement 30 minutes later. Begin to cool the body by placing cool, wet towels over the back of the neck, in the armpits, and in the groin region. You may also wet the earfl aps and paws with cool water. Directing a fan on these wetted areas will help to speed evaporative cooling. If your dog is not returning to his/her normal energetic self by now, transport to your closest veterinary clinic immediately. Although rapid cooling is vital, be careful not to ‘overcool’ your dog. Most dogs with hyperthermia have body temperatures greater than 40°C, and a reasonable goal of cooling is to reduce your pet’s body temperature to 39°C while transporting him/her to the closest veterinary clinic. If you try to aim for 38°C there is a change you will overshoot the mark and end up with a hypothermic dog. Do not leave your dog unattended for any length of time, as dogs with heatstroke can deteriorate very quickly.

If You Have a Problem with.....
Is it enough to cool my dog at home or do I have to bring him/her to a vet clinic? Severe heatstroke is a disease that affects nearly every system in the body. Simply lowering the body temperature fails to address the potentially catastrophic events that often accompany this condition. Dogs with heatstroke need to be on IV fl uids and may need intermittent blood tests to evaluate organ function and electrolyte levels. Symptoms of heat stroke that carry a poor prognosis include seizures and vomiting blood and/or bloody diarrhea. Once a dog has reached this stage, it is very difficult to turn the situation around, as a chain reaction of multi-organ failure has begun.

A dog suffering from hyperthermia should be seen by a veterinarian as soon as possible, any delays are putting the dog’s life at risk. What additional steps can I take to prevent my dog from getting heatstroke here in Bali? • If your dog is a pedigree breed with a long coat, it is safer to keep the coat clipped short. Not only does it reduce the risk of heat stroke, it also makes your dog less likely to suffer from skin problems and is generally more comfortable for your dog. • Never leave a dog in a locked car in Bali, even with the window open the car can quickly become like a sauna. • Always ensure your dog has fresh, clean water to drink at all times, and a place to lie in the shade. • Avoid exercising your dog during the hottest times of the day. • Be aware of the signs of heat stroke and what to do if they occur.

Sometimes it is not easy to differentiate between a hot and tired dog panting after exercise, and a dog developing or suffering from heat stroke. The former should recover back to normal within a few minutes of being given water and a cool place to rest; the latter will remain lethargic despite this. What should I do if my dog might have heatstroke? Firstly you should remove your dog from the environment where the hyperthermia occurred. Move your dog to a shaded and cool environment, and direct a fan onto him/her. Offer your dog a bowl of fresh cool water, but do not force him/her to drink it if he/she is not interested in it. If at all possible, insert a thermometer into the dog’s rectum (at least a centimeter inside) to measure the rectal temperature, and write it

Golden Monkey, on Jln. Dewi Sita, is still
Ubud’s only complete Chinese restaurant. That it offers mainly Cantonese cuisine is obvious by that world recognised trademark of Cantonese style Roasted Ducks [pictured] hanging for all to see. They are prepared on the premises, every day, along with a range of other roasted meats such as chickens and Char Siew [they prepare both pork and chicken]. A non-Cantonese option is their perfect Peking Duck which is served the traditional way, sliced at the table. Mandarin pancakes are provided to wrap your pieces of outer fl esh and crisp skin in after adding a dribble of Hoisin sauce. The body of the duck is then taken away to prepare a further course; your choice of Kung Pao, Black Pepper or San Choy Bow [course minced, to be wrapped in crisp lettuce leaves]. Whilst everyone loves dim sum for lunch the Mixed Dim Sum Platter is a very popular starter for lone diners, with five items; some steamed, some fried. A new addition to the menu, for a late breakfast, is traditional Congees [rice porridge] which can be with duck, pork, chicken or just vegetables. For me the crisp iced cucumber sticks with sesame sauce are a must to nibble on whilst perusing the rest of the menu. Salt & Pepper Soft Shell Crab is another new dish worth trying, although the old standards [sweet & sour, black pepper, ginger and spring onion and kung pao] are always hard to resist.
Graze is an all day diner at the southern end of Jln. Tamblingan, Sanur, and it remains as one of my favourites for a quiet, quality, good value lunch. They have updated their menu with a number of new options. Their house-smoked salmon is enough reason to visit here any time. Whilst the Smoked Salmon Salad, sitting on a shallot salad with Dijon potatoes and a split boiled egg is a long time special there is now also a Smoked Salmon Club on rye with horseradish mayonnaise and potato wedges. The Steak Sandwich is in a long roll with caramelized onion jam, rocket, aioli and roasted tomato, with fries on the side. Best of the burgers is the Prime Angus, triple cheddar, double bacon with mustard mayonnaise. A Thai Minced Chicken Salad is a westernized version of the popular Kra Pao, with basil and chilli but without the egg on top. Dinner time and you want more substantial mains then there is now New Zealand Lamb Chops, marinated with smoked chilli and mint pesto and Jumbo Prawns with ginger lime coriander. Their 7 country breakfasts are all still available and served all day. I prefer the European, with its perfect Eggs Benedict or the spicy Mexican, with a jalapeno and corn fritter.

WEST is the latest example of the ever growing relevance of the local work force in Bali’s food & beverage industry. It is a school for Sommeliers, a first for Bali, maybe even Indonesia? It has been set up by a group of well established Bali professionals led by Mozaic’s Tjok Bagus Senajaya and SIP’s Made Puniasa Eka Putra. There are four different class levels; Beginner, Basic, Sherif and Expert. A pass in one makes you eligible to attend the next higher level. All are open to both local professionals in the industry and to those who are not but wish to improve their knowledge and appreciation of wines. The college is in Gianyar [Jln Astina Selatan, 109], It is sure to prove a boon to F&B Managers wanting to improve the skill level of their staff. For more info contact hello@west.co.id. Shima, Bali’s only dedicated Teppanyaki restaurant [on Jln.Petitenget close to the Jln. Raya Kerobokan lights] now has four special menus for lunch. The full dinner menu is also available but these lunch specials are just extra options. All four come with starters of soup [or salad] and mixed vegetables, and are served with fried rice from the teppan, but they all have their own individual main course. They are as follows; Chicken Teriyaki Set [chicken thigh teriyaki with sweet sauce and fried rice - Rp. 120.000++], Barramundi Shogayaki [barramundi with ginger sauce - Rp. 165,000++], Beef Yakiniku [marinated beef with special yakiniku sauce - Rp. 185,000++] and Ikatama [calamari and egg mixed with tonkatsu sauce - Rp. 160,000++]. River Café has long been a pleasant diversion from the hectic Ubud scene for those
locals who were in the know. It is found at the extreme southern end of the Maya Ubud property, after passing through the foyer a relaxing stroll to the lift that takes you down to where the rivers meet and overlooking one of the hotel’s many swimming pools is the River Café. Just sitting there in the peace and quiet makes you think that you too are on holidays. Late last year the hotel welcomed their new Executive Chef [actually Director of Food & Beverage] to Bali. Though Belgian Geert Dirk Vermeulen is hardly new to Bali as he once operated the Pala restaurant on the ByPass, Sanur, since then he has been for many years at the Grand Melia in Jakarta and other leading 5 star hotels in Indonesia. New things on offer at River Café include a refreshing soup of Tomato & Ginger with pumpkin seeds and basil. The Pizzas at River Café are now available either standard or gluten-free. Lingering lunches are perfect for indulging in very sweet sweets whilst no one is watching! If the Passion Fruit Semi-Fredo, with mango, and strawberry added, does not appeal how about their Espresso Tiramisu Cake with mascarpone and amaretto cream or the Chocolate Layer Cake with raspberry coulis and caramelized orange? PROJECT KARMA-OUR MISSION : Combating Child Sexual Exploitation Project Karma was established in 2015 and registered with the Australian Charity and Not-for-profit commission in March 2016. Based In Melbourne Australia, Project Karma’s focus is to combat child exploitation both within Australia and in key regions of South East Asia where the majority of these crimes occur. Millions of children are trafficked globally each year with many for the purpose of child prostitution. This number is growing at an estimated 20% per year where these children, the majority living in East and South East Asia, face constant sexual and physical violence. Why does this happen? These children are from very poor families, have little or no health care, unsafe drinking water, inadequate nutrition and are unable to go to school. Unregulated economic growth along with other factors ie: increased migration, tourism growth, natural disasters, increased use of the internet, and confl icts and violence all contribute to putting these children more at risk of becoming child sex slaves. Also vulnerability plays a big part in the commission of these offences. In these poor regions of the world people will do just about anything to gain money, sadly including selling their own children. Enter Glen Hulley .. Project Karma CEO and founder Glen Hulley was a private investigator and former Victorian Police Officer having spent 13 years in both uniformed and covert operations. His fierce determination and dedication was ignited to fight against child sexual exploitation and trafficking when on a holiday to Cambodia in 2013 he was offered a young child for sexual services. This was to change Glen’s life. On his return to Australia, he made the decision to sell everything he owned, formed Project Kama and moved to southeast Asia to lend his skills at fighting child sex trafficking. Glen has worked with other NGO’s in Asia overseeing investigation teams in Jakarta, Batam, Lombok, Bali, Manila, Cebu, Philippines, Nepal and India and continues to consult with Australian and International law enforcement and government bodies, diplomats,
consuls and ambassadors in addressing these horrendous crimes. Project Karma Sentinel Project Mission Statement “To rescue and rehabilitate all children from situations of sexual slavery and sexual abuse by investigating all reports of child sexual exploitation, then advocating for prosecution of offenders in conjunction with local and International law enforcement agencies throughout designated regions of South East Asia”.
build links between these communities and the local law enforcement, gather as much support as possible from governments and businesses and encourage the communities to confront child sexual abuse. Secondly, partner with local law enforcement and train them on the most effective investigation methods, provide the best practice advice for the rescue of these abused children, provide temporary accommodation and assessment, provide counselling, psychological therapy and other support services and work on the legislation for sexually abused children. And thirdly, in predominantly rich countries where transnational sexual child abusers come from, work with governments to limit rights to child sex offenders by establishing a child sexual offenders register, restricting where offenders can live and work, ban overseas travel, report and monitor obligations and allow appropriate public access to register information. Project Karma played an integral role in supporting Australian Senator Derryn Hinch in changing Australian legislation to prohibit child abusers travelling overseas and have been actively involved in many investigations and convictions, including those of several high profile paedophiles that have since been imprisoned. These efforts have saved countless children form further sexual abuse and exploitation. How to supprt Project Karma
The main focus is to disrupt Organized Crime networks that create and supply a market of children for sexual exploitation. Project Karma are currently developing and implementing strategic action plans to combat this issue. They aim to : • Bring legal action action against sexual abusers of children • Rescue and rehabilitate child victims and potential victims of these crimes • Create and deliver awareness and education programs at all levels in SE Asia, Australia and beyond about sexual abuse and exploitation of children • Lobby government for recognition and action to address key causes surrounding these crimes. The only effective way to fight child sexual exploitation and abuse is to actively target all aspects of the ‘industry’ that this has become. Project Karma shall focus it’s work where it has the largest impact and where the biggest challenges exist. Firstly, educate the local communities by raising awareness through training how to deal with suspicions and offences,
Project Karma relies on donations from individuals as it’s main source of funding and any amount big or small helps us to protect vulnerable children. Almost every dollar received from sponsors and supporters goes directly to support projects in the field actively involving fighting child sexual exploitation, including the Sentinel Pilot Projects in Bali and Cebu in the Phillipines. For further information on supporting Project Karma please contact us at admin@projectkarma.org.au. For further information on Project Karma and Glen Hulley please contact our website www.projectkarma.org.au and follow us on facebook www.facebook.com/project.karma. sentinel.
