There are other things you can do. By building up your financial investments and pension schemes in safe offshore jurisdictions you have a buffer against the impact of disasters, loss of your home or job or even the collapse of a currency. When any currency falls heavily in value, paper money will lose its purchasing power but investments in property or stocks, albeit with their own risks, represent solid assests which will retain some if not all of their value. Our Past Shall Not Dictate Our Future: I Am… I Can… We Will! but enabling and furnishing them with the skills to find their own path to success, encouraging them to realise that their past does not dictate their future. In an effort to showcase the success of these Job Training and Internship Programs, Stella’s Child invites everyone to attend their next charity fundraising dinner at The Trans Hotel on Saturday, September 1st. Prefaced by the theme: I Am, I Can, We Will, the evening promises to be a spectacular affair: not only offering an insight into the incredible work that founder, Tim Cameron and his band of talented mentors, volunteers and local business affiliates are achieving with their intensive training & development programs, but also introducing guests to this year’s inspirational interns and their incredible stories.

While there may be many Bali based children’s charities working tirelessly to ensure our island’s disadvantaged youngsters have the chance at a better life, few if any would be more invested in the future of underprivileged youth than Stella’s Child. Working in conjunction with local orphanages, this Yayasan has formulated forward thinking, successful programs focused on motivating these young people to break the perpetuating cycle of poverty that may have prevailed through earlier generations. Through training and mentoring via their Life Skills, Entrepreneurship and First Employ programs, Stella’s Child strives to unlock the potential of underserved youth, helping them to fulfil their ambitions and realise their dreams. The idea is not about finding them a job,

The evening kicks off at 6.30pm with a pre-event exhibition followed by an opening ceremony at 7.30pm featuring this year’s students. Under the creative direction of Angela Haffenden, students will demonstrate the importance of global citizenship, self-development and the notion that each of us can be a catalyst for change. Maintaining the momentum of the evening, master of ceremonies, author and acclaimed motivational speaker, Chris Robb will convene a TedX style talk based on mentoring and the vital role it plays in our lives. Guests will also get to meet keynote speaker Komang Andreas; a successful graduate from last year’s internship program who will share his personal journey to success along with his dreams for the future. The formal part of the program will conclude with a moving musical tribute curated by famous Belgian singer Jonathan Cerrada, featuring a performance by the Stella’s Child students.

If you live, work, have a business or just have some exciting news about this area then we want to hear from you! Canggu News submissions for future editions are welcome to be emailed to: canggueditor@yahoo.com If you are submitting information about a future event, please be sure to provide accurate details regarding time and place and include pictures where relevant.

A sit down feast, free flow wine from Cape Discovery and DJs are set to keep guests wined, dined and dancing throughout the evening. There will also be an impressive array of raffle and auction prizes up for grabs. These prizes have been generously donated by local Bali businesses, some of whom have become an integral part of the internship and job placement program and are keen to see these Stella’s Child initiatives continue for years to come. Stella’s Child provides underprivileged youth with a blend of programs that increase their self-esteem and confidence as well as their employability. But they need our help to make this happen. The revenue raised through the fundraiser on September 1st will enable them to continue to provide these proven programs and services to Bali’s most underprivileged youth by funding scholarships to their Entrepreneurship and First Employ Programs, mentoring valuable life skills and encouraging these kids to reach for the stars. Join the Stella’s Child family as they celebrate their success and showcase an inspiring evening of self awareness and development. Tickets are IDR 575,000 per person or get together with a table of 8 for IDR 4,500,000. Be the catalyst for change and assist Stella’s Child to continue to offer these kids the chance for a brighter future. To reserve your table today, please contact tcameron@stellaschild.org

(Email dris@finnsrecclub.com for more info about this offer) Advance payment discounts are applicable when you commit to and pay for a minimum of eight weeks or if you prefer to casually pop in to a class on occasion, a drop in rate applies. Finns Platinum and Gold Card members are also eligible for a further 30% discount on advertised rates with Social and Social Plus members enjoying a 10% reduction. The start of a new school term means new experiences and new challenges and now that all of the kids are back at school it’s also time to sign them up for a fresh term of afternoon sport to get them motivated and moving again. No need to be Einstein to establish that youngsters need to remain active. Numerous studies have provided conclusive evidence that kids who are physically active for at least an hour each day develop healthy sleeping patterns, have improved strength and endurance, tend to deal with physical and emotional situations in a more positive manner and are able to concentrate more effectively in class. With the bulk of today’s generation at the mercy of screens for work, rest and play, it is more important than ever to encourage our youngsters to get out and get active and JSA provides a multitude of opportunities to do just that! Term One of the Junior Sports Academy’s After School Program

commences from Monday, August 13th and, as usual, the line up of activities offers something for every young sports lover. This program runs for the duration of nine weeks and includes all the regular favourites. Gymnastics, swimming, tennis, trampolining, dance, soccer, parkour and rugby continue to make an appearance in the program as well as new addition, Mental Sports Preparation for something a little different!

JSA sessions are all guided by qualified coaches, each with years of experience in their respective sports. Some coaches are also available for private sessions for individuals or small groups. Should parents wish to further develop their child’s skills with private sessions or have children who wish to train together at a different time, JSA keeps the option open to discuss this prospect in person with the individual coach or email to jsa@finnsrecclub.com to discuss it further.

This new offering gives credence to the mental and psychological factors that help to make athletes into champions. Mental preparation in sports is often overlooked, yet it is vital to sporting success. It exists to help athletes where other coaches, nutritionists, and trainers do not. Mental skills can help all ages and abilities benefit from the principles of sports psychology. Mental preparation is not only about encouragement, motivation or pre-match pep talks, it trains

Drop Everything and Go to the Movies! The Bali International Film Festival, affectionately known as the Balinale, is now 12 years young! It is Indonesia’s longest-running international film festival, and a global cultural event. Mark your calendars, go to the website www.balinale.com to get your festival passes, and map your way to the two Cinemaxx theatres (Renon and Kuta) to avoid disappointment. The Balinale can also be followed on social media. The Seagull, The Breadwinner, Coco, Wages and 55 Steps are among the outstanding films to be screened, with a special virtual reality Valen’s Reef; not to be missed!

With TIMELESS as this year’s theme, the lineup of screened films acknowledges film’s extraordinary facility to communicate what the festival identifies as the largest of human stories as well as the briefest moments of world changing emotion. The full schedule should be on the website by press time. Serious filmmakers and industry watchers can partake in the professional film forum BALINALEX preceding the Balinale. extensive experience, professional services and our established network. Perhaps our most famous film credits include Savages by Oliver Stone (Moyo Island), Alex Cross by Rob Cohen (Bali), Born To Be Wild by David Lickley (Kalimantan), Eat Pray Love by Ryan Murphy (Bali) & Under the Sea 3D by Howard Hall (NTT). And there’s a long list of international television series, TVCs, corporate videos and travelogues all filmed throughout the country with the Film Center’s assistance.

Yes. Since 2002, Bali Film Center has facilitated film, television and print projects shooting throughout all parts of Indonesia. We provide the research, logistics and support the legal processes both nationally and provincially. We actively seek projects in development and have been inviting productions to consider all parts of Indonesia through our international associations and events. Bali Film Center has been officially recognized for our

Extremely positive. Each year we continue to grow the festival and its program. Renewing and expanding our official partnerships with the Cinemaxx Theater, Lippo Mall Group and can now include the Aryaduta Bali.

What does it take to stage the Balinale?

Balinale has earned its reputation as a global film event through its efforts to gain recognition for the country’s creative industries and unique destinations. As an internationally recognized film festival, it draws the attention of global filmmakers and notable celebrities with a number of them returning to the festival each year.

It takes the strong support of the local community, a team of hardworking and enthusiastic volunteers plus a committee of industry professionals and international affiliations to pull it all together.

I am very pleased to say we have a number of Festival Friends who schedule their time around being in Bali to attend the festival. Some locally based film lovers attend every single screening (even bringing their own pillow!)

Our key to success is the diverse audience we have and how strongly they show their appreciation to the filmmakers for the work that they share with us each year.

What does the Balinale offer the local community?

These projects have benefited the Indonesian economy in the form of airlines revenue and increased tax and licensing fees, plus, in the private sector, many hotels & restaurants, leasing, entertainment. Perhaps most significantly, our work develops talent, skills and job opportunities for the local workforce.

Participation of the filmmakers in our events is important. BalinaleX Industry Forum held at the Ayodya Resort Bali, Nusa Dua, 22-23 September, gathers together regional and international stakeholders with local professionals and policy makers to discuss Indonesia’s visual entertainment ecosystem and explore the commercial opportunities & obstacles to a successful film and television industry.

According to the Current Tourism Minister, Arief Yahya, ‘Film has become a powerful medium that greatly contributes in promoting Indonesia’s tourism and that Bali International Film Festival, in particular, has strengthened Bali and Indonesia as a global film destination.’ We present traditional Balinese dance, musicians, arts & contemporary entertainment at Atrium Lippo Mall Kuta during the festival week. We provide workshops free for the student and events for the community. We also offer provinces the opportunity to showcase the potential of each region as a film location inviting both Indonesian and International Filmmakers to scout their areas. It is proven that Film and Television can be a very effective medium to introduce a local area and its culture with a film increasing tourism numbers for many years.

Former New York casting director Deborah Gabinetti was working in television in Jakarta in the 1990’s when she decided to create the Bali Film Center. I interviewed her in her Sanur office, where interns of various nationalities were hard at work managing the final details of this year’s festival. The Bali Film Center is really linking Hollywood to Indonesia!

Canggu:

info@glospabali.com www.glospabali.com

The most rewarding part of the festival is our children’s program where each year we bring several orphanages to the festival to experience the magic of cinema, many for the very first time. A main part of the festival is its educational programs conducted by established Indonesian and international actors, producers, directors and writers. These promote occupational skills training for the media, film & entertainment industry and create a foundation to support local arts and artisans while providing training and workshops to expand talent and technical services to support the creative industries. What kind of feedback do you get from the industry and fans?

One memorable time was seeing our first-ever studentproduced films on the topic of environment shown at the closing ceremony of the United Nations Climate Change Conference (UNFCC) held in Bali.

MUKA

So You Love an Alcoholic Take Courage; There Is Hope Hope for families & friends of alcoholics

Intuitive Herbology is an interesting concept in skin care for the face using all natural products from Bali that have been created to nourish the delicate skin on the face using food for the skin. Located in the developing area of Perenan is a new shop, this rustic looking wooden building is the newly opened home to Muka. Entering the small shop is a large counter displaying their products. Here you can play with the tester products, even giving yourself a do-ityourself facial. This is all complimentary to try out the yummy smelling products. Just add a little water to the product to activate it. The Muka Concept is for the staff to teach you how to use the products to give yourself a facial at home and use for daily skin care. Or you can indulge in a 90 -120 minute professional facial with Putu on a comfortable wooden lounge. There is also a display of some black and white clothing designed by the owner and a large wall with shelves displaying a large assortment of brown glass bottles. I was treated to a relaxing facial using all of the natural products. First my face was cleansed with a macadamia daily cleanser paste that when water is added forms a milky cleanser. After this was removed she turned on the steamer to add moisture throughout the facial. I had a choice of a facial scrub - chocolate, coffee or sea-salt to exfoliate the skin. I chose the chocolate because the smell made me feel warm and loved. Then came the extraction process. I’m lucky and have very few commodos over my nose area, but for an acne prone person it could take up at an hour to completely remove all the white and black heads imbedded in your skin. Following this she gave me maybe the longest facial massage I’ve ever had the pleasure. But Putu surprised me when she donned surgical gloves and inserted her fingers into my mouth and massaged the muscles around the mouth and cheeks. This I had never experienced before. But it made sense to thoroughly massage these muscles. After this she applied a turmeric mask to heal and calm the capillaries and any inflammation helping the skin to build a healthy tan. For a person with oily skin a mud mask, rich in minerals, would be applied to detoxify and purify the skin and balance the oil production. While allowing the mask to dry, Putu massaged my hands and arms. After removing the mask she applied seaweed serum for hydration and providing a layer to protect the pores from the ever present dust on the roads these days. The serum also soothes the capillaries and tightens the pores and stimulates collagen production. The final touch was a light sun screen made from cacao and coconut oil to protect my skin on my journey home. When looking in the mirror after the facial my face looked very different. The skin glowed with health and all lines were smoothed away. With products like chocolate, turmeric, honey, coffee, ginger, macadamia, seaweed and coconut oil to name a few. The dedicated team at Muka have been working for five years developing these amazing products. They use only organic natural plants from

Bali. Because all of the products are natural they have a short shelf-life of up to six months.

Let’s talk about the products • • • • • • • • • •

The chocolate scrub contains cold pressed coconut oil, raw cacao, beeswax, cinnamon and cacao powder Coffee scrub contains nutmeg, cloves, ginger and coffee The macadamia paste is the gentlest way to repair the skin and reduce water loss. Turmeric mask heals and calms the skin while soothing capillaries and inflammation Mud mask detoxifies and purifies, excellent for oily skin Seaweed serum with aloe vera added is for daily use to provide hydration and promotes collagen production. You can apply it several times a day to create a layer to protect pores from dust and pollution. Nutmeg flower oil infused with vitamin E in a sesame oil base works as energy stimulation and enhances the facial beauty by curing fungal problems, treats blackheads or acne. Great anti-aging tool. Sunscreen creates a gentle UV protection by providing a protection wall using cacao and coconut oil. Honey body cream enhanced with honey to dissolve fat cells and ginger essential oil to increase blood circulation while promoting oxygenation of the tissues Flower butter cream in infused with geranium oil to help balance the secretion of sebum and clears sluggish and oily skin. This cream has antiseptic properties which is an effective aid for burns, wounds, ulcers and other skin problems. Great for massage or after a bath.

A fantastic daily routine of using the products is to u s e t h e macadamia cleanser both morning and night to thoroughly cleanse the face. Followed by the seaweed serum, which can be used anytime during the day to refresh your skin. Then add the sunscreen before you go out into the tropical sun. At night before bedtime cleanse with macadamia cleanser, then seaweed serum followed by nutmeg flower oil as a nighttime rejuvenator.

Say What? Question: My boyfriend and I met at university, and are following similar career paths. Last month a visiting family member said he was best friends with a head honcho in our industry, and that my boyfriend and I should send him our resumes; so that he could pass them on to his friend. Now, after we both submitted resumes, I heard back - nothing about a job, and nothing about my boyfriend; but the head honcho set up a phone appointment with me to talk about possibilities, and it’s all rather amazing. There’s no job yet, and he says I can call or email him any time and to definitely let him know as soon as I’m back home; so that he can set up meetings with different companies - not necessarily job interviews, but people who can shoot me in the right direction. My question is about my boyfriend. We’re going to be going home together, and I know that he’d love to have meetings. But I already feel as if I’m receiving a huge favor, and I’d feel weird dragging him along or asking for meetings to be set up for him too. I know that I should tell him this is my contact, and he had a chance to send in his resume when I did. (He sent his in a few hours past the “deadline” – after my family member had left.) I know he’d understand, but I want him to have opportunities, too. Although I have this question answered for myself, I have no way of approaching it. Should I just own the fact that this is now my situation? Or should I bring it up and talk to my boyfriend about it? This is nothing we would ever break up over, but I love him and want him to have awesome opportunities too, and I really want to spare his feelings. Dr. ZZ: I would not present this to your boyfriend as a problem. It is perfectly okay that you are the first to land a job interview, that you get to take advantage of your family member’s contact, that people are interested in doing you a favor, and that the head honcho liked your materials better. Go to every meeting that you can, and seize the opportunity. You don’t have a job until you have a job. Make your interviews about you, about what you can do for the

company, and about what you can learn. Don’t dilute the experience by also trying to sell your boyfriend at the same time. It will weaken your position. Let people do the favor they’ve offered to do for you, and don’t try to expand it to include him right now. If you’re both in the same industry and you’re both good at what you do (and it sounds as if you are), this is something that is going to happen over and over again in your lives. One of you will be the pioneer into a given opportunity, and then once you’re in the door, you will do reconnaissance for the other person. If your boyfriend is bummed that they didn’t call him too, it’s totally understandable, and you can express empathy without taking this on as an unfair problem you must fix. A good partner will understand and be psyched for you. He may be sad, but he won’t steal your thunder or pressure you into trying to rep for him too. Being awesome is not something to apologize for. Don’t offer to advocate for him or to try setting up meetings for him to make him feel better. In a weird way it will make something that isn’t your decision at all into something that feels like your decision or your “fault.” It’s not your responsibility to get your boyfriend a job or to manage whatever feelings he has about it. Go after this opportunity as hard as you can, and leave open the possibility that the two of you will play a life-long game of job leapfrog.

Question: I’m planning a party for my 21st birthday, and I’ve run into a dilemma. I was dating a woman, with whom I am still on friendly terms, and she’s back in Bali. She invited me to her housewarming a few weeks ago; I went and realized it was a terrible mistake. I was uncomfortable and generally unhappy for a few days afterwards. We’ve been in contact since - but only in a fairly light-hearted context. Now I don’t know whether to invite her to my party or not. My gut feeling is to say, hell no! If she comes, I know I won’t enjoy myself. The problem is, since she invited me to her party, I feel that not inviting her would be a nasty snub. She’s not a bad person, and I don’t want to be rude - especially since she’s been nice to me - but I just don’t want to potentially spoil an event that’s supposed to be happy. Please help! Dr. ZZ: You can invite whomever you want to your party, and you don’t have to justify it. You can also not invite whomever you don’t want to your party, and you don’t have to justify that either. It’s your party, your money, your food, your place, and your rules about who to invite. Even if your ex is not an inherently bad person, and even if she’s trying hard to be cool, you don’t have to be good friends with her or let her back into your inner circle. An invitation is not a contract or an order. You don’t have to work hard at this lady anymore. Happy Birthday!

Kulture Kid! By Vaughan Hatch Gongs in Bali Part II How many different types of gongs are there in Bali? A gong is actually not just a round metal object that hangs in a frame and makes a sound when you hit it. There are in fact different categories of gongs in Bali which can be made of bronze, iron or bamboo. I’m going to categorize the gongs we see in Bali as follows: 1. Hanging gongs with bosses

These are the most common type, are made from bronze or iron, and Balinese refer to them as a gong, kempur or kemong / kelentong, depending on their size: gongs range from 85 to 70 centimeters, kempur from 65 to 35 cm centimeters, and kemong from 25 – 20 centimeters in diameter. Any gongs smaller than this have different names. They all have a central raised nipple known as a ‘boss’ and are hit with a large padded mallet that weighs almost a kilogram. Gongs are used in a variety of gamelan ensembles, such as gong gede, gong kebyar, balegangjur, gong luang, and semarandhana. 2. Hanging gongs with sunken bosses These have a sunken central boss and are fairly rare. Known as bende, as I mentioned in my previous article, they are the oldest recorded type of gong in Bali. Bende are hit with a mallet that looks like a pestle but made from a soft wood. 3. Hanging gongs without bosses Known as gong bheri, these are categorically of Chinese origin, make a harsh rather than booming sound and are thought also to be very ancient. Only two villages in Bali (in Semawang and Renon) use these gongs are part of an ensemble called ‘Gong Bheri’. They are hit with a small padded mallet. 4. Upright, pot gongs, lap gongs There is quite a large variety of these: terompong, bonang, riong, kajar, kelenang, kenong, ponggang, kempyung and kempli. These types of gongs are hit with sticks (either one or two) and can serve either a melodic or rhythmic function. The rarest of the pot gongs are the kenong (extinct), ponggang (extremely rare) and kempyung (on the verge of extinction). A kajar is like a mini version of the bende but played on the lap mimicking the drum strokes. 5. Slab gongs There are two types: iron with two bars that are tuned slightly out from each other and hung over a resonating chamber – found primarily in the joged and genggong ensembles; and bamboo which vibrate over a resonator to create a low but softer sound and only played in the arja ensemble. The Fun Factoid Festival It’s always fun to dig up zany facts from the internet and share them with friends or incorporate them in your trivia quizzes. Here is what’s perking up some interest these days. Fascinating genetic mutations in humans – Genetic evolution in humans seems to follow a slow but visible progress. We seem to get taller, live longer and healthier. Our DNA has been mapped and its secrets are slowly being divulged. There are myriad cells in our body each of which contains 23 pairs of chromosomes. These chromosomes in turn contain hundreds to thousands of physical and character traits. Most of the members of the human race have common traits and characteristics which fall in the so-called normal range. But in some humans a mutation of genes and a re-arrangement of chromosomes can result in some deviant traits that are not shared with the majority. Mutations can be caused by environmental factors such as ultraviolet radiation from the sun or can occur if an error is made as DNA copies itself during cell division. Some of these mutations can be passed to the next generation. Some benign mutations like lactose tolerance, blue eyes and red hair are fairly well known since they have a long history and have been well documented. These traits crop up in certain segments of the population and are sometimes geographically localised. Lactose tolerance, for instance, is most prevalent in people descended from ancient herder tribes in Northern Europe, the Arabian Peninsula, West Africa, and Central Asia/the Indian Subcontinent. These tribes fed their infants with animal milk and the kids maintained lactose tolerance into adulthood. The rest of humanity didn’t. Haemophilia, Down syndrome and albinism are less fortunate examples of mutations. Some other mutations from animals. Like the loss of a fur covering, the third eyelid and the inability to move your ears. Most animals have the ability to rotate their ears towards a sound but humans have lost that ability. In the category of rare mutations there are some fascinating examples. There is a tribe in Zimbabwe called

by Ines Wynn

the vaDoma, known as the Ostrich people where a genetic trait called electrodactyly is prevalent in several different family lines. Electrodactyly is a rare condition in which the hand or feet only have 2 digits, missing the middle digits. It occurs mostly in the hands. The vaDoma have very large and broad feet with only 2 distinct toes reminiscent of the ostrich family. Despite the odd appearance they walking normally. Progeria or accelerated aging is another rare condition. So is resistance to poisons, the inability to feel pain, the absence of active sweat glands or odourless perspiration. Yes, there is a lucky 2% of the population that has this fortunate gene. They are mostly East-Asian. Maybe that explains why many Indonesians don’t have a distinctive perspiration odour. Architecturally speakingThere are many architectural marvels in this world; some spectacular, awesome or just plain ingenious. Check out the rolling bridge, a type of curling movable bridge completed in 2004 as part of and retail development project at Paddington Basin in London. It is twelve meters long and opens every Friday at noon to let boat pass. It does so by curling up until its two ends touch. After the boats have passed, it gently unrolls itself again to a prone position.

Next time you travel to Vietnam you could take in another awesome bridge by taking an inspiring walk on the Cau Vang Golden Bridge located in Thien Thai garden in Ba Na Hills, just outside of Da Nang. The bridge appears to be held by a giant pair of hands that lifts it into the sky. The walk is 150 meters long and 1.400 metres above sea level, offering visitors a spectacular view of the surrounding mountainous landscape. To the point – The Pirahãs tribe, a group of huntergatherers in the central region of Brazil appears to have no need for numbers. Apparently they don’t even have words like ‘all’, ‘every’, and ‘more’. Their counting ability is limited to one, two and many. They also have no use for colours, as there are no words in their language to describe the hues that surround them. Do you know what a donkey power is? It is a true unit of measurement, equivalent to 250 watts, approximately ½ horsepower. Your Harley Davidson may use brake donkey power; check it out. In case you’re wondering, there is no such thing as goat power; that’s a goat renting service in Portland, Oregon. If you’re not from Australia you may not have encountered a quoll. It’s a small carnivorous nocturnal marsupial whose numbers have declined due to loss of habitat and predators like the toxic cane toad. They primarily reside in coastal areas. They are cute but may not make good pets as they are just active at night and prefer to sleep their days away. Decidedly less pet-material is the narwhal, a medium sized Arctic whale you may encounter in Greenland, Russia and North Canada. They are called the unicorns of the sea because the male has a long forward-pointing spirally twisted tusk resembling that of the famed unicorn. The tusk is actually a protruding canine tooth. The narwhals can dive 1 mile deep. They also are in danger of declining numbers as they often collide with shipping

Japanese Water Pump Torture All across the Bali we hear the twitter of the birds, the tinkle of gently flowing water and the soft clicking of the water pump. Some people don’t like the noise but not to worry, the big game hunters from the village will soon put a stop to those pesky birds with their airsoft guns. Water pumps are another matter and recently water pumps started “going off” all over the island, they are driving people to distraction, it is being called the “Japanese Water Pump Torture.” Some people, however, are pleased; Wayan’s Wig’s is having a field day, Tommy’s Toupees are very busy and even the Mas Merkin Manufactures are flat out replacing tufts of golden tresses torn out in exasperation with those infernal clicking water pumps. So what is it all about? In a word “earthquakes”. You see most of us have a water pump to pump water to our houses and we have taps, showerheads and toilets where the water emerges, what happens in between is a mystery as unfathomable as where our odd socks go. The water pipes are hidden deep within the concrete of our walls and floors. This gives us a problem, we only need a small amount of ground movement and our houses move and crack. The concrete is strong and breaks the embedded pipes and we have a leak which sets the water pump off. Since the recent earthquakes struck plumbers have been very busy repairing leaking water pipes all over the island.

on, we turn the tap off, the water pressure in the pipe builds up and a second pressure switch switches the water off. The switches make a clicking sound. We can see that if a pipe between the pump and the tap gets damaged by an earthquake, it starts leaking and the pump will switch on. If the leak is a big leak the pump will run continuously, if it is a small leak the pump will keep switching on and off, it starts “cycling”. If air starts getting into the pipe we might get splurts (a splurt is, of course, a technical plumbing term that is far too complex for me to explain here) out of the taps or we might not get any water at all. Splurts can be explosive and very annoying and the shock loading on the pump can damage it. No water at all means the pump is trying to pump air, the pump can overheat and destroy itself. So what do you do if we have water pump problems? The first thing to do is to make sure you know how to switch the pump off. A good plumber will always install a plug and socket so you can unplug the pump or, better still, a switch so you can switch the pump off. Find out where the switch or plug socket is before a problem arises.

traffic lights you might have a bit of a problem. When your plumber arrives the first thing he should do is to check your toilets and taps to make sure that they are not leaking and causing the problem. He should also check that the pump pressure switches are working correctly. Once he has determined that there is a leak in the pipes somewhere you might need some patience, he will have to find the damaged pipe so he can either repair or bypass it and this might be a tad more difficult than teaching your pet dog calligraphy. Finally, it is a good idea (though untrained plumbers rarely do it) to have stopcocks installed so you can turn off different branches in the pipework, this will allow you to isolate leaks while still giving you water where the pipes are good. Now you can sit down and have a nice cup of coffee and wait while your plumber sits cursing in the traffic - oh but no, you don’t have any water.

If your pump is running continuously and you do not have water, switch the pump off and call your friendly plumber.

So why does the pump click?

If your pump is running continuously or cycling but you are still getting water then it is alright to switch the pump on when you need water but it is a good idea to switch it off when you are not using it. Call a plumber.

The pump that supplies the water to the taps is operated by pressure. We turn a tap on, a pressure switch in the pump senses the drop in water pressure and the pump switches

You should bear in mind that good plumbers in Bali are rarer than denticles on a gallinaceous jungle fowl. If your “plumber” learned his technical skills marketing nodding dogs at the

SOCIAL STUDIES I celebrated National Day at Puri Lumbung in Munduk again this year. The rustic hotel is built among rice fields, clove trees and flower gardens high on the edge of an ancient caldiera. The view spills down to the north coast and Java’s Mount Meru beyond. The air is crisp and cool, and perfumed with the aroma of cloves. This community hardly existed a century ago. A small number of indigenous people were already living there when five families from Klungkung arrived about 200 years ago, fleeing a succession conflict with the royal family. These few households were already in place when the Dutch, seeking relief from the summer heat of their administrative capital Singaraja, began to build a few holiday cottages in Munduk beginning in the early 1900s. The Dutch brought their unique colonial architecture to Munduk, and planted their traditional export commodities: coffee, cocoa, cloves and vanilla.

and built a few lumbungs. Traditional buildings are a common architecture theme in Bali today, but 25 years ago the idea was considered crazy. “I believe Puri Lumbung was the first eco-tourism destination in Bali,” he said. “The ‘responsible tourism’ jargon hadn’t yet been invented, but in 1992 we were already conserving water and electricity, building with local materials, reducing solid waste, recycling plastic, composting kitchen waste, using local foods and hiring and training locally long before these practices became mainstream.” At an elevation of between 500 and 1200 metres, Munduk’s average temperature is a refreshing 20-30C. The town, which now has a population of about 6,000, has become a popular retreat for tourists and Bali’s expats. Puri Lumbung now has 50 simple rooms and employs 100 people, by far Munduk’s single greatest employer. Its kitchen purchases vast quantities of fruit and vegetables from local producers to feed its guests. My previous visits had also been during the clove harvest. With about 700 hectares of the surrounding slopes planted in clove trees, the crop has traditionally been an anchor of the local economy. The best buds are picked and dried for the spice trade, lower quality goes to flavour the ubiquitous clove cigarettes and the fallen leaves are distilled for essential oil. The dangerous task of picking the cloves while climbing frail ladders has historically been done by seasonal workers from Klungkung and Java. What does this mean for the future of agriculture in Bali? Almost before we saw it coming, we may already be past the tipping point

The ancestors of Pak Nyoman Bagiarta were among the early Klungkung settlers in Munduk. The village grew around their family compound as more farmers and traders arrived and settled, cleared land and planted crops. By the 1920s Munduk was a prosperous little village. When the war came, the Dutch left and markets for local crops contracted. Then the price of coffee collapsed in the 1950s and the Sukarno government mandated that the coffee plantations be replaced with cloves. Munduk slumbered on into the 1990s, its economy very depressed. The new tourism boom in the south, which started in the mid 1980s, was already drawing people away from the village. Bali’s nascent tourism industry was focused on the Nusa Dua model of a five-star, gated tourist community that kept the real Bali at arm’s length. Pak Nyoman, by now Director of the Hotel and Tourism Training Center in Nusa Dua, observed the negative economic and social impacts of concentrating tourism in the south and became one of Bali’s first proponents of responsible tourism. Over time and against industry opinion, he slowly created the plan of developing Munduk, his birth village, into an ethical tourism destination. Pak Nyoman felt instinctively that there was a market for a more authentic tourism experience

But last year’s heavy, unseasonal rain ruined the cloves and this year’s abundant crop is hanging in fragrant clusters in the trees, unpicked. “Tourism has improved in Klungkung and the workers don’t want to pick cloves any more,” Pak Nyoman told me. “There aren’t enough pickers from Java, and local people don’t want to do the work. So it looks like this crop will be lost.” Not only are agricultural workers hard to find, but the hotel finds it difficult to attract skilled staff to work there. The young people of Munduk are gravitating to Denpasar to work in shops, or moving to other areas to attend high school. “Everyone wants a white collar job, even though they have no skills,” says Pak Nyoman. “We need to find way to make agriculture more prestigious and more profitable. By introducing farmers to new skills and food technology and finding bridges to market, perhaps the agriculture sector here can be saved. Otherwise, what will it look like in 2 years?” We sat together over cups of local coffee and gazed out at the steep mountainsides covered with clove and coffee trees. A lot of the coffee crop was also rotting on the trees this year,

and that which was picked was sold for a low price because the quality was poor. Adding value locally to the cloves and coffee would bring a significant increase in cash to the community, but the learning curve will be steep even if people were interested. These crops both happen to be very labour intensive. Coffee must be selectively picked so only the ripest red cherries are used, then fermented, dried and sorted by size so the beans roast evenly. Cloves are dangerous to harvest, then each clove must be snapped off the cluster by hand and sun-dried. Theoretically the farmers could learn to harvest the coffee more carefully, ferment and dry it. But their smallholdings are remote from each other and from the village; a project to train them and monitor the process would be challenging. Such a project would require an investment in money and human resources, even if the farmers agreed to take part. Farming communities are traditionally very conservative and resistant to change. But the quality of their crops needs to be improved. Then there is the issue of the young people who will inherit these smallholdings. Many of them are already planning a future that doesn’t include agriculture. As Pak Nyoman observes and I mentioned in my last column (The Last Straw), there’s been a rapid shift away from manual work. Young people want clean, indoor jobs. And once they leave the farming life, it’s very unlikely that they’ll return. What does this mean for the future of agriculture in Bali? Almost before we saw it coming, we may already be past the tipping point. Rice fields disappear under hotels, villas and shops and cloves and coffee decay unpicked as young Balinese migrate to urban areas. Traditional labour pools from poorer areas have dried up as local economies improve. And high on the cool slopes of Munduk, 700 hectares of forgotten clove trees shed their fragrant crop.

Ndaba Mandela, Susi Pudjiastuti, Hanif Kureishi, Gillian Triggs, Fatima Bhutto, Jane Caro, Dee Lestari announced for Ubud Writers & Readers Festival’s 15th year For its 15th year as Southeast Asia’s leading festival of words and ideas, the Ubud Writers & Readers Festival (UWRF) has revealed a stellar lineup of 160+ authors, journalists, artists and activists from 30 countries. Often described as a human rights festival under the guise of a literary event, in its milestone year the UWRF promises a world of stories, ideas and solutions at a time when amplifying diverse voices and rarely-heard perspectives is more critical than ever. From Indonesia to Ireland, Sweden to Spain, the Philippines to Pakistan and dozens of countries in between, the five-day program of insightful in-conversations, intimate literary lunches, impassioned debates and powerful performances – all held in Ubud’s most magical venues – will demonstrate why the UWRF has evolved into one of the world’s top writers festivals. Following in the footsteps of his beloved grandfather, the Festival is thrilled to welcome Ndaba Mandela, who has taken the torch – and run with it. Mandela will share the journey that taught him the power of resistance, the spirit of endurance, the triumph of forgiveness, and the beauty of reconciliation. From seeking refuge in eight African countries to the Oprah stage, bestselling memoirist Clemantine Wamariya will ask audiences to look beyond the label of victim and recognize the power of the imagination to transcend even the most profound injuries and aftershocks. Among the leading literary luminaries are revered British playwright, screenwriter, filmmaker and novelist, Hanif Kureishi, Booker Prize nominated Indian novelist, Anuradha Roy, one of Indonesia’s best-loved and most widely translated poets, Sapardi Djoko Damono, twicewinner of Australia’s premier literary prize the Miles Franklin, Kim Scott, award-winning British novelist and essayist, Geoff Dyer, and bestselling Italian novelist Giuseppe Catozzella. They’ll be joined by award-winning Pakistani author and memoirist Fatima Bhutto, one of the frontrunners of Indonesia’s contemporary fiction scene, Dewi Lestari, award-winning author and medical doctor of Nigerian descent, Uzodinma Iweala, and beloved Indonesian writers Leila S. Chudori and Aan Mansyur.

From religious extremism to environmental justice to the recent deadly earthquake in Lombok, Southeast Asia’s leading journalists, activists and political commentators will tackle the region’s most alarming concerns. Recognized authority on insurgencies and ethnic conflict, Sidney Jones, will be joined by former Fairfax Indonesia correspondent, Jewel Topsfield, moderate Islamic activist, Yenny Wahid, promoter of pluralism and progressive Islamic thought, Haidar Bagir, Founder of the Institute for International Peace Building, Noor Huda Ismail, Indonesian and Malaysian media expert, Janet Steele, Malaysian religious commentator, Dina Zaman, and former Beijing and Seoul bureau chief of the Los Angeles Times now based in New York, Barbara Demick. They’ll appear alongside the recipient of the 2016 Maarif Award for efforts to bring peace through literature and journalism, Moluccan poet Rudi Fofid, courageous Indonesian investigative journalist, Febriana Firdaus, and veteran journalists Endy Bayuni and Putu Fajar Arcana. Climate and environment discussions will be led by Indonesia’s maverick Minister for Maritime Affairs and Fisheries, Susi Pudjiastuti, young Dayak leader and environmental activist, Emmanuela Shinta, and Executive Director of Greenpeace Southeast Asia, Yeb Saño. Sharing deeply personal insights and incisive analysis is a national and international feminist powerhouse comprising former President of the Australian Human Rights Commission, Gillian Triggs, Walkley Award winning Australian journalist and social commentator, Jane Caro, fearless Indonesian novelist and filmmaker, Djenar Maesa Ayu, Indian author, poet and dancer, Tishani Doshi, Australian writer, broadcaster and public speaker, Clementine Ford, Balinese poet and educator, Saras Dewi, Australian journalist and memoirist, Jill Stark, and Indian social activist, Gurmehar Kaur. The importance of sharing women’s stories continues with London-based journalist and bestselling author, Shrabani Basu, whose Victoria & Abdul is now a major film starring Judi Dench, one of Singapore’s hottest young novelists, Balli Kaur Jaswal, acclaimed Indonesian author, poet, curator and architect, Avianti Armand, much-loved Indonesian-

Singaporean author Clarissa Goenawan, and journalist, travel writer and broadcaster Kamin Mohammadi, who was exiled from Iran to the UK at ten years old. Upholding its reputation as a festival of fresh voices where audiences often discover their new favorite writers, the UWRF is excited to welcome Australian-Indonesian author and translator Tiffany Tsao, brave young Indonesian writer Norman Erikson Pasaribu, Maori novelist and poet Apirana Taylor, British writer influenced by Indigenous cultures, Jay Griffiths, Serbian-Australian New York-based writer, Sofija Stefanovic, and Scottish-born natural scientist obsessed with Indonesian architecture, Tariq Khalil. The Festival continues to celebrate Indonesia’s burgeoning film industry with a packed program led by its two most lauded recent films, Kamila Andini’s Sekala Niskala (The Seen & Unseen), and Mouly Surya’s Marlina si Pembunuh dalam Empat Babak (Marlina the Murderer in Four Acts). Andini will be joined by her father, the legendary director Garin Nugroho, and experimental filmmaker and novelist, Richard Oh. They’ll be in good visionary company with renowned sculptor, Nyoman Nuarta, designer of the world’s second tallest statue, the Garuda Wisnu Kencana. “After 15 years, we feel our Festival has fulfilled its purpose of putting Ubud on the literary map, nationally and internationally, and sparking interest in Indonesian literature. Most visitors in the early days said they knew nothing about Indonesian writers and journalists, but this has slowly changed,” commented UWRF Founder and Director, Janet DeNeefe. “In 2018, we’re not only celebrating our 15th year as Southeast Asia’s leading festival of words and ideas. We’re also celebrating the fact that Indonesia is home to world class literature, art, film and food – and finally the world is taking notice,” DeNeefe concluded. CasCades @ The Viceroy has established itself as one of Bali’ best restaurants during the reign of their talented exec chef Nic Vanderbeeken, who now moves ‘Upstairs’ to their new ultra fine dining restaurant, Aperitiif. an exotic multi course degustation dinner awaits the lucky first diners. You will begin the experience at the new cocktail bar, eating canapés which you pluck from the Canape Tree [pictured]. For lovers of the old CasCades, of which I am one, it becomes their all day dining option but still with a talented kitchen headed by English chef Miles Belfield offering French based cuisine but with Asian flavours. The new menu at CasCades includes some very interesting dishes such as a Quail Wellington. Whilst Aperitif will be doing exotic dishes such as Venison wrapped in pastry.

DD Thai, Jln. Danau Poso, Sanur, is Bali’s only real traditional Thai restaurant. Nothing fancy but quietly professional, it is a pleasant place dining in or on the edge of the garden, the cuisine very much as eaten in a Thai home. Whilst the basic green and red curries are

available every day, the special ones [Yellow, Panang and Massaman] are only prepared on certain days and there appears to be no fixed schedule. So if a special curry is what you are after it is always better to call first and check. The rest of the great menu is available each and every day. When I go I always seem to order old favourites’ Kra Pao Gai [minced chicken, basil and as much chilli as you want] and Yum Pla Duk Foo [an amazing combination of crunchy deep fried catfish and the classic Thai green mango salad].

Kuu is, as far as I know, the only true Izakaya restaurant in Bali. It is on Jln, Danau Tamblingan, in front of the Maya Sanur. The menu is large but includes such items as Goma Dofu, steamed prawn on sesame scented tofu with wasabi, Tatoyaki is octopus, leek and ginger balls topped with Japanese mayo, and bonito. Asparagus Nikumaki, asparagus spears rolled in Angus beef grilled with Japanese sweet sauce, Kaki Furay, deep fried crumbed oyster with tonkatsu sauce, Hiyayako, chilled silken tofu with spring onion, bonito flakes and ginger, The concept is to order many small dishes and share, whilst drinking sake.

Jackson Lily’s has emerged on the site that once was the popular Belgian jazz restaurant of Mannekenpis, Jln. Raya Seminyak, now operated by Dean Keddell of Ginger Moon with his interpretation of Modern Asian cuisine. Fresh Spring Rolls, Mushroom Dumplings and Pumpkin Salad are just some of his creations. The unusual restaurant name is that of Dean’s two children, Jackson and Lily.

Maison is Ubud’s newest Indian restaurant, it is found in Pengosekan at the busy corner opposite the petrol station, an area with limited parking [some in front of Asian Prophecy which is a part of the same building]. Entrees are standard; Samosas [potato and peas in a puff pastry], Paneer [cottage cheese], etc but it is only the 2nd Indian restaurant in Bali to offer Frankies [after Gateway], a great entree, soft Indian bread rolled around a choice of fillings, vegetarian, chicken or mutton. Other entrees with a difference include Vegetarian stuffed Chilli Kebabs and Singapore Mutton, which is pan fried with garlic and lemon juice. Mains include a Shish Kebab, minced mutton laced with crushed almonds amd pistachio nuts. This restaurant is hedging its bets with TWO menus; Indian and Other. The other is mainly local but includes a few Spaghetti dishes.

Massimo, Jalan Danau Tamblingan, Sanur, now has a Cheese Trolley when you dine there. You can enjoy a selection of the wonderful Italian Cheese that he makes, plus a glass of house wine together with a portion of the incredible Chilli Jam which is also made on the premises, all for just Rp. 75,000++. Jars of the Chilli Jam and an equally fine Onion Jam are also for sale to take home [Rp. 50,000 each]. NC/R/G-29 August 18

Hairy Balls! The Hub is a large glass-fronted building on the western side of The Bypass in central Sanur. Its cuisine is innovative café style, and it is already popular with many local customers, mainly those who drive cars rather than motor bikes. It has hit the ground running, busy from opening, the first western restaurant that has done that, on The Bypass, since Olaf took over Arena, many years ago. An impressive setup that according to the international athletes in Bali for the recent wheelchair rugby tournament is the most accessible restaurant in Bali. This was referencing not only the front access ramp but by the spacing between tables and toilet access. So few restaurants in Bali are wheelchair friendly. A Yellow Volkswagen sedan car hangs in the foyer, a rather expensive piece of decor. The word ‘Thai’ appears often on this menu, however that refers to the liberal use of Thai spices and sauces rather than to any serious attempt to offer traditional Thai cuisine. Hairy Balls [pictured] is a strange dish title,in fact they are balls of prawn/chicken meat wrapped in wonton strips, the accompanying dip one of Thai sweet chilli sauce. The name reminds me of a sweet rice dish I was served at an Armenian dinner in Tehtran. I had wondered what the sweet white meat escalopes were until someone so gently informed me…. sheep testicles. I had often seen them in the supermarkets, always strangely in packs of three. There are many bar style snacks on this menu. Another is the Prawn Mayo, battered shrimps, each sitting on a lettuce leaf with cubes of red dragon fruit, potato and a dab of mayonnaise, tasty! And then there are the Fish Cakes. Westetn style but with that great Thai sweet chilli sauce. The Thai Beef salad is no Yam Neua. In fact it is the Indo/ Thai style that appears on menus all over Indonesia, a Western salad [lettuce, tomato, etc] with seared beef, basil, coriander and mint, still quite good.

QUICK REVIEW An interesting salad is the Green Mango. It is without the bite of the Thai version but has a generous slab of grilled salmon added to it. You can order it without the salmon but who would want to do that?

For soup there is a reasonably good TomYum with lemongrass, galangal and kaffir lime leaves, though more sour than hot. This version has fish and squid added to the normal prawn base. And then there is the Goulash soup, a meal in a bowl, beef, potato and paprika, toast on the side.

Non-smoking Area : Air-con, inside.

Price

: Rp. 400,000 for two [+ drinks]

Standard for all new cafes a selection of Pasta [excellent Ravioli, large round sachets stuffed with a mix of mushroom and spinach, in a creamy sauce, and an interesting Bacon Pesto] and Pizzas. For the pizza [thin crisp base, as I like it] you select how you want them made, with a normal dough base or with Black Bamboo Ash added, a detox special. The range of pizzas includes all of the basic ones except that the Hawaiian [so popular with the Aussies] uses beef ham instead of the real stuff…..a shame as this is Bali, not Java and there are many other pork dishes on the menu! Although recently in Kuala Lumpur I was served turkey ham and could not detect much difference from the original.

As expected there Is a range of Sandwiches, Burgers and even Pork Belly, nice and crisp drizzled with fermented soya bean sauce. Mains are almost a pork fest; Baby Back Ribs, Pork Chops and even a Pork Knuckle. There ia also a Lamb Chop [but two on the plate] and a Lamb Shank. Steaks, of course, meat from Australia, Tenderloin, Rib Eye, or a chop still on the Rib, all served with your choice of side dishes [the trendy waffle potato fries are all the rage]. The Asian menu [read Indonesian] is very well priced which has no doubt contributed to the big local following The Hub has already achieved. The Nasi Goreng Espresso is a house creation, all the others [Kuug Pao Chicken, Rendang, Oxtail soup] are standards. For dessert, Bali’s two most popular imports; the Italian Tiramisu [served in a jar, no idea why], and from France a Creme Brulee. The place has a fresh clean feel about it, the serves are mostly large and the prices are mostly cheap, a sure winner. A happy place to visit.

Local News

Two types of tectonic plate activity create earthquake and tsunami risk on Lombok Several large earthquakes have struck the Indonesian island of Lombok in the past week, with the largest quake killing at least 380 people and injuring hundreds more. Thousands of buildings are damaged and rescue efforts are being hampered by power outages, a lack of phone reception in some areas and limited evacuation options. The majority of large earthquakes occur on or near Earth’s tectonic plate boundaries - and these recent examples are no exception. However, there are some unique conditions around Lombok. The recent earthquakes have occurred along a specific zone where the Australian tectonic plate is starting to move over the Indonesian island plate - and not slide underneath it, as occurs further to the south of Lombok. This means there is earthquake and tsunami risk not only along the plate boundary south of Lombok and Bali, but also from this zone of thrusting to the north.

Jammed subduction zone Tectonic plates are slabs of the Earth’s crust that move very slowly over our planet’s surface. Indonesia sits along the “Pacific Ring of Fire” where several tectonic plates collide and many volcanic eruptions and earthquakes occur. Some of these earthquakes are very large, such as the magnitude 9.1 quake off the west coast of Sumatra that generated the 2004 Indian Ocean tsunami. This earthquake occurred along the Java-Sumatra subduction zone, where the Australian tectonic plate moves underneath Indonesia’s Sunda plate. But to the east of Java, the subduction zone has become “jammed” by the Australian continental crust, which is much thicker and more buoyant than the oceanic crust that moves beneath Java and Sumatra. The Australian continental crust can’t be pushed under the Sunda plate, so instead it’s starting to ride over the top of it. This process is known as back-arc thrusting. The data from the recent Lombok earthquakes suggest they are associated with this back-arc zone. The zone extends north of islands stretching from eastern Java to the island of Wetar, just north of Timor. Historically, large earthquakes have also occurred along this back-arc thrust near Lombok, particularly in the 19th century but also more recently. It is thought that this zone of back-arc thrusting will eventually form a new subduction zone to the north along from eastern Java to the island of Wetar just north of Timor. Tsunami risk Lombok’s recent earthquakes – the August 5 6.9 magnitude quake plus a number of aftershocks, and the 6.4 magnitude earthquake just a week before it – occurred in northern Lombok under land, and were quite shallow. Earthquakes on land can sometimes cause undersea landslides and generate a tsunami wave. But when shallow earthquakes rupture the sea floor, much larger and more dangerous tsunamis can occur. Due to the large number of shallow earthquakes along the plate boundaries, Indonesia is particularly vulnerable to tsunamis. The 2004 Indian Ocean tsunami killed more than 165,000 people along the coast of Sumatra, and in 2006 over 600 people were killed by a tsunami impacting the south coast of Java. The region around Lombok has a history of tsunamis. In 1992 a

magnitude 7.9 earthquake occurred just north of the island of Flores and generated a tsunami that swept away coastal villages, killing more than 2,000. Nineteenth century earthquakes in this region also caused large tsunamis that killed many people. The areas around Lombok and the islands nearby, including Bali, are at high risk for earthquakes and tsunamis occurring both to the north and the south of the island. Unfortunately, large earthquakes like the ones this week cannot be predicted, so an understanding of the hazards is vital if we are to be prepared for future events. [The Conversation Aug 13, 2018]

Court rejects bid to stop expansion of coal-fired power plant in Bali The Denpasar Administrative Court has rejected a legal challenge by Bali residents attempting to halt the expansion of a coal-fired power plant on the island, the environmental group Greenpeace said on Friday (17/08). Three people living near the Celukan Bawang Power Plant in Buleleng district, on the northern side of the island, had tried to stop the planned expansion due to pollution fears. “The judge only used the perspective of our opponents,” said Didit Wicaksono, a climate and energy campaigner at Greenpeace Indonesia, which backed the legal challenge. “We are very sad about the decision,” he told the Thomson Reuters Foundation, adding that an appeal in a higher court was now planned. The legal bid claimed that the expansion, which would more than double power capacity at the site, would be a setback to the remote area’s tourism and fishing industries. The expansion would lead to increased air and water pollution, damage crops and have a negative effect on wildlife at the nearby West Bali National Park, the plaintiffs argued. In its ruling on Thursday, the court said the action “had no legal standing” and that new technology would be able to mitigate the risk of pollution, according to Greenpeace. The court also ruled that expansion work should not be halted during any appeal process, Wicaksono said, adding that activists and community members are planning to protest near the plant. General Energy Bali, which runs the Celukan Bawang Power Plant, could not be reached for comment. Energy Ministry spokesman Agung Pribadi said by phone that the government would respect the court’s ruling. In a statement, one of the plaintiffs, I Ketut Mangku, said pollution from the coal plant has negatively affected the health of both his family and his crops. “The planned expansion is going to be even more harmful with far reaching impact,” he said. Indonesia is among the fastest-growing countries for energy consumption due to a steadily increasing population, economic development and a rise in urbanization. Like other Asian nations, the government faces the challenge of boosting electricity access while meeting its pledge to cut climate-changing emissions under the Paris Agreement. Indonesia’s emissions targets can only be achieved by reducing its reliance on coal power and ramping up investment in clean, renewable energy projects, electricity experts say. shudders

through

tourist

The powerful earthquakes that struck the Indonesian island of Lombok in recent weeks killing some 400 people have sent holidaymakers fleeing, raising questions about how its lucrative tourism sector will bounce back. Two deadly tremors a week apart - accompanied by dozens of aftershocks - wrought widespread damage on homes and livelihoods, striking during the crucial tourism season, when hotels, local businesses and seasonal workers earn the bulk of their annual revenue. In the Gili Islands, a popular backpacker and diving destination just off Lombok’s northern coast, thousands of terrified tourists jostled on powder-white beaches for departing boats. Lombok’s airport was briefly crammed with holidaymakers rushing to get flights out,

Alfan Hasandi depended on peak season tourists to see his family through the rest of the year. He and his brothers ran a now shuttered business on one of the islands, Gili Air, offering boat tickets, snorkeling, trekking and vehicle rentals, usually earning five million rupiah ($350) a day during peak season. “We hope we can rebuild… but it’s impossible because people are still traumatized,” the 25-year-old told AFP. “Our homes have been completely destroyed… We don’t have money to rebuild, we need help.” Located in the one of the most tectonically active areas in the world, Indonesians are used to natural disasters and its tourism industry has bounced back from catastrophes in the past. But for Lombok, the quakes struck at an especially cruel time, when the island’s tourism industry was on the way up. Dubbed “The Island of a Thousand Mosques”, Muslim-majority Lombok was always a path less travelled destination than its bigger neighbor Bali, the Hindu-majority island that forms the backbone of Indonesia’s $19.4 billion tourist sector. But it had been earmarked as one of Indonesian President Joko Widodo’s “10 new Balis” with the regional government hoping to develop it into a major destination, especially in the booming halal tourism sector. Its residents now have to repair and rebuild, hoping that spooked tourists return. Senggigi would normally be bustling with visitors this time of year. Now boats lie idle along its main beach, restaurants and hotels have been shuttered on its main drag and the usual stream of touts offering services has dried up. “We don’t know whether we can operate again in September,” Susi Hayati, manager of the Asmara restaurant, told AFP. Ketut Jaya, manager of the nearby Holiday Resort Lombok, said it might be a month before they could start taking guest bookings again. Just 19 of the resort’s 189 rooms were occupied by hardy tourists who decided not to leave after the quake. Authorities estimate the damage unleashed by the two quakes on buildings and infrastructure on Lombok will exceed two trillion rupiah ($138 million). But while the post-quake images of destruction and departing tourists were dramatic, analysts predict tourism in the region will recover after short-term pain. Indonesia’s tourism sector has been robust in the face of major crises before, including natural disasters like the 2004 tsunami and terror attacks such as the 2002 Bali bombings. “The impact is not as big as a tsunami and the (Lombok) airport is still open,” Tedjo Iskandar, a Jakarta-based travel analyst with TTC Travel Mart, told AFP. Asnawi Bahar, chairman of Indonesia’s tour and travel agency association, described the earthquake as a “temporary shock” for the sector. The number of visitors to Bali plummeted following the 2002 bombings, which targeted a nightclub and bar frequented by Western tourists. The attacks killed more than 200 people and shocked the world. But the island soon regained its status as one of the world’s most popular holiday destinations. That is little comfort for people like Vina Kartika, who used to work on Gili Trawangan, where one of her friends was killed in the quake, and has currently lost her seasonal tourism job. “I will now have to stay at home, doing nothing,” she said. On Gili Air island, some hotels were flattened but others survived. A diving school was barricaded with wood panels and furniture to keep intruders out. A supermarket in the middle of the island was completely empty, its windows broken. Hasandi said he is trying to remain upbeat, and he said lessons can be learned from the Bali’s recovery. “People were scared back then but then came back,” he said. “This is a natural disaster, so it should be OK - God willing.” [APF August 12, 2018]

Fake News Alert: Bali not being sold off to pay debts, says Indonesian finance minister A viral social media posting reporting that Indonesia’s finance minister wants to sell Bali off in a bid to pay off the country’s debts is pure hoax, says the minister herself, Sri Mulyani Indrawati. Not only is the whole thing fabrication, but authorities are hunting for the netizen behind the “false posting”, because this hoax is a massive case of defamation, according to Indrawati. The viral social media post was initially published in October 2017 by a profile using the name “Sandy Yah”, but the link was later removed and the account disappeared. However, it was re-uploaded and shared on Friday, leading the Minister of Finance to issue a statement via Instagram on Sunday night. “The Unitary State of the Republic of Indonesia is not for sale. The Republic of Indonesia, since being proclaimed by our nation’s founding, we continue to maintain our sovereignty and independence,” reads the posting on Indrawati’s official Instagram account. The minister continues in her statement to explain the sovereignty of the country and how policies are openly shared on the ministry’s website. “The community must be more careful and not believe in slanderous and fake news,” she adds. “The fake news circulation was intentionally carried out to attack the government, fiscal policy, and state finance in an unfounded manner and attack the Minister of Finance personally. “Legal action will be taken against the creator and spreader of hoax news.” [Coconuts Bali August 13, 2018] Australian juvenile delinquent detained for stealing Rp. 13.6 million in wrist watches from Bali airport duty free shop Australian news media and Balipost.com report that a 17-year-old boy identified with the initials CJ was detained before boarding a flight back home on Saturday, August 11, 2018, accused of stealing two wrist watches from the duty-free shop in the International Departure Terminal of Bali’s Airport. Because the boy is under aged, police from the juvenile crime division from Denpasar were called in to handle the case. Police say that CJ was seen by employees at a watch shop shoplifting two time-pieces with a total value of Rp. 13.6 million. The Australian Courier Mail identified the youth as hailing from Mermaid Waters on the Gold Coast of Australia who was traveling with a step brother at the time of the incident. The boy’s father and stepmother were originally scheduled to fly back to Australia the day after the purported theft. In order to prevent CJ from mingling with adults under detention, he was detained in a special separate room at a police station. The boy’s father hired a lawyer, Putu Angga Pratama Sukma, who is reportedly trying to mediate the case with the DutyFree Shop to avoid charges being filed that would bring the boy to trial. The lawyer said the boy was crying at the police station and begging for forgiveness. Whenever possible, Indonesian law urges mediated solutions for cases involving under-aged children, but this can only happen if the shop that suffered the loss is prepared to withdraw criminal charges against the boy.
