School News Montessori School Bali’s Playgrounds, Bike Track and Court Open An exciting flying fox, more playground equipment, an asphalted MBX/mountain bike track and the surface of a new outdoor court have all opened during a very busy first half of this academic year at expanding Montessori School Bali. Physical expression is an important element of the Montessori curriculum. Students are encouraged to always listen to their bodies and move them as needed, both inside and outside the classroom. Montessori School Bali’s outdoor plastic-free playgrounds, one for preschool children and a separate one for primary, are designed for children to challenge themselves and take risks while also having fun. The equipment provides opportunities for children to develop physical strength, coordination, socialisation and exploration.
“Challenging children to stretch their physical limits allows them to discover what they are capable of, inspiring the development of healthy self-confidence,” says Montessori School Bali principal Jan Gaffney, an educator with more than three decades of Montessori experience. Jan selected the pieces used in the playground based on many years of hearing from children what they like. The newest pieces of equipment are for the Primary playground: a thrilling flying fox that zips down one whole side of the playground, plus a hexagonal tyre-swing structure that allows children the potential to connect and
socialise while also developing balance, strength and coordination. These are in addition to monkey bars at two heights plus a huge climbing jungle gym made of recycled ulin, all under shade cloth. The Preschool playground features monkey bars, a tower with swings and slide, tyres for balancing and old tree trunks arranged for scrambling over. “Our playgrounds have been a labour of love for everyone involved. Everything was thought through, from the sourcing of sustainable wood to the exact way the pieces would be used,” says Jan. A natural partner to the playground is the newly asphalted BMX/mountain bike track at the school, designed and built by parent Lucas Cavanagh. The s p r a w l i n g , challenging track has been used in after-school activities and the school’s Adolescent P r o g r a m m e students learned how to “get some air” on the track during Term One.
outdoor court that is set to be used for sports such as basketball, handball and skipping. The court was also a useful hard surface during the school’s third biannual Twilight Market in November, which saw close to 1,500 people from our local community in attendance. One of the objectives of this event, organised by the school’s Parent and Teacher Association, is to allow the public to use and see the school’s facilities for a social and convivial evening. If you’re interested in learning more about Montessori School Bali, we are holding an information afternoon for our Lower Primary programme aimed at children aged six to nine (or Grade One to Three) on Wednesday, February 5 at 3:30pm. This one-hour session will cover how children transition from Preschool to Primary and what the Montessori Lower Primary curriculum covers. Please email contact@montessoribali.com to RSVP if you would like to attend. The MSB three-year Adolescent Programme (Grade Seven to Nine) is actively seeking enrolments from 12and 13-year-olds at the moment. The school will hold an information evening about this programme on Thursday, February 6 at 6:00pm. Please email contact@ montessoribali.com to RSVP if you would like to attend. (This term, for their physical expression unit, our AP students are being coached in cricket by Andy Cottam, the national Indonesian team’s coach!)
“It’s obvious the students are learning valuable life skills such as taking calculated risks and increased coordination and awareness,” Lucas says. “Naturally, they’re going to fall off sometimes when they are progressing, but the resilience they’ve built up over time here has significantly improved the way they react.” Last but not least, the school has laid the surface of an

Valentine’s Day Staycations Pamper and Rejuvenate Valentine’s Day is synonymous with flowers and chocolates. Both are the go-to gifts for those clueless about what to give their partner on this very special day. This year, why not shake things up a bit by booking an accommodation and treatment package that combines healing and pampering. If you are overwhelmed by the sheer number of romantic staycation options on the island, read on. Fivelements
Inspired by the wisdom of Balinese healing practices, Fivelements is a wellness destination set along the sacred Ayung River just outside Ubud. While the location is certainly stunning, Fivelements is about much more than aesthetics. The retreat blends luxury, sustainability, plantbased cuisine and holistic healing to bring its visitors a combination of both traditional and innovative healing. All the better to help you and your partner let go of outside distractions.
(massage with a patchouli and rose essence and a hibiscus flower bath). Last but not least, the two-and-a-half hour Couples Rejuvenation Experience includes a 90-minute Coconut Harmony or Pure Seaweed Ritual in one of the retreat’s couple’s suites. Those looking for romantic moments more in tune with the rhythm of the island can opt to experience one of Fivelement’s sacred healing rituals. Inspired by the Balinese philosophy of Tri Hita Karana—or harmony with God, harmony among people, and harmony with nature —the retreat’s healing rituals include meditation, body work and energy healing administered by Balinese healers whose gifts have been passed down family lines for generations. For example, the Energy Healing treatment balances the five elements of fire, air, earth, water and ether within the body. If you are after a bonding experience with a touch of the surreal, try the Fire Blessing, a ritual that includes chanting while you discard negative thoughts and energy, and set an intention for your life as a couple. Alternatively, the Water Blessing Ritual is a holy water cleansing ritual to purify you and your partner on a physical, emotional and spiritual levels. If you are after an overnight experience, try one of Fivelements Romantic Stays, where you can experience the retreat’s couple’s spa rituals and healthy cuisine, and stay in one of its sustainably-designed villas. For a special treat, soak in your alfresco stone-carved tub or relax by your very own private plunge pool (if you are staying in one of the retreat’s Bidadari Villa). After a day of pampering and romantic moments, head out on a bicycle to investigate nearby Balinese villages. https://fivelements.org/en/ Sukhavati Ayurvedic Retreat and Spa
If you are looking to spend a memorable day with that special someone this Valentine’s Day, Fivelements offers three types of Romantic Day Experiences for couples. All experiences combine healing spa rituals and a living food cuisine lunch or dinner at the retreat’s stunning bamboo restaurant, Sakti Dining Room. The three-and-a-half hour Ida Pingala Harmony Experience includes a two-hour balancing massage administered by two therapists, and a romantic bath for two by the banks of the Ayung River. The three-hour Signs of Love Experience consists of a two-hour Chocolate Love treatment (chocolate and almond scrub, body mask and massage) or a Hibiscus Prema treatment
Blending Ayurvedic wellness programs, Balinese aesthetic and verdant surroundings, the Sukhavati Ayurvedic Retreat and Spa is an ideal destination to experience quality time with your partner while you both gain a new perspective on your mental and physical wellbeing. Your experience begins with a consultation with an Ayurvedic doctor who prescribes a course of treatment for the duration of your stay (usually between one and 21 days) that includes special meals and spa therapies. The retreat’s vegetarian Ayurvedic cuisine is prepared using seasonal produce right from the on-site

organic garden. The schedule of activities also includes optional yoga, self-guided meditation, as well as guided village walks bike rides.
https://www.sukhavatibali.com/ Zen Resort Bali
Set outside Ume Anyar village in north Bali, around a 2-hour drive from Ubud, Zen Resort Bali is all about spiritual rejuvenation amid some of the island’s most beautiful scenery. The resort offers numerous wellness packages depending on you and your partner’s interests and goals. The Zen Signature Stress Release Retreat includes daily yoga and meditation sessions, holistic spa treatments and forest walks. If you are looking to shed some excess pounds as a couple, the Zen Signature Slimming Retreat might just be the ticket. Based on Ayurvedic healing methods, the program includes detoxifying body therapies and a diet program. For a more active experience, opt for the Zen Signature Harmony Diving Retreat or the Zen Signature Harmony Free-Diving Retreat, which involves controlled underwater breath holding. The diving sessions take place in Tulamben, where divers can explore a World War II shipwreck; Puri Jati, famous for its macro-diving; or Menjangan Island, a part of West Bali National Park.

PARADISE... IN SICKNESS & IN HEALTH MOSQUITO REPELLANTS....What works? What doesn’t? Vitamin B: Can vitamin B tablets make you a less tasty treat to the biting menaces? Probably not. Though some people swear by it, when researchers at the University of Wisconsin asked volunteers to take placebos or capsules with vitamin B, they did not find any evidence that the substance could help reduce mosquito attraction.
Although we have not had a lot of rain so far this year, Dengue fever is already starting to appear in pockets around the Island. Other diseases such as Japanese Encephalitis, Chikungunya and Malaria (there is not so much Malaria in Bali), are transmitted by mosquitos. Do you seem to get eaten alive when others are left alone? You’re probably not just imagining it. Everyone’s body chemistry is a little different, and some people are more likely to attract unwanted insect advances than others are. Mosquitoes can sense your presence from far away. When you breathe out, you emit a plume of carbon dioxide that carries on the breeze, and CO2 also seeps from your skin. Mosquitoes are attracted to carbon dioxide as well as the warmth and humidity you’re giving off. Hence those with a higher body temperature (e.g. pregnant women) are easily targeted. One way to avoid being bitten is to use a repellant. From zappers to catchers to candles and sprays, mosquito repellents come in many forms. But which ones really work? Here are some tips on how to stay off a mosquito’s menu. THE CHEMICAL STUFF DEET: Potent, But Safe One of the most effective mosquito repellents is one of the oldest around. DEET was first developed for use by the U.S. Army in 1946, and it became available to the public in 1957. Many other products have hit the market since then, but few compare to DEET. In fact, it’s one of two ingredients in mosquito repellent that the CDC recommends for preventing mosquito-borne diseases. The other is picaridin, and the CDC believes these two ingredients are more effective than other mosquito repellents. DEET has an excellent safety record, despite some people’s concerns. N,N-diethyl-3-methylbenzamide doesn’t sound like something you’d want to spray on your skin, and perhaps its acronym reminds people of the dangerous and now banned insecticide DDT. They’re nothing alike, however. THE NATURAL STUFF Lemon eucalyptus oil The most effective natural mosquito repellent so far. A 2002 study in the New England Journal of Medicine compared different synthetic chemical and herbal repellents. A Lemon Eucalyptus Repellent provided 120 minutes of mosquito protection, more than a repellent with a low concentration
Bananas, Listerine, Dryer Sheets, Lemon Dish washing soap. Skin-so Soft and alcolhol have all been proven not to work THE ELECTRICAL STUFF
of the chemical DEET (4.75% DEET provided 88.4 minutes of protection and 23.8% DEET, provided 301.5 minutes of protection). Geranium oil and soybean oil The New England Journal of Medicine study found that repellants containing these oils provided 94.6 minutes of protection against mosquitoes. This is slightly more effective than 4.75% DEET. Citronella A well-known natural mosquito repellent. The oils from the plant are used to make lotions, sprays, and candles. A University of Guelph study assessed the effectiveness of 3% citronella candles and 5% citronella incense in protecting subjects from bites. They found that subjects who were positioned near the citronella candles had 42.3% less bites and those near the citronella incense had 24.2% fewer bites. Based on these results, citronella candles shouldn’t be used as a stand-alone repellent, all though they may help in combination with topical repellents. The least effective products were wristbands treated with DEET or citronella, which offered almost no protection. According to the researchers, this wasn’t a surprise. It’s known that mosquito repellent only works on the surface to which it’s applied directly. Mosquitoes are happy to bite skin only four centimeters away from the repellent band. THE RUBBISH - It just don’t work Garlic: Is there an old wives’ tale that doesn’t feature garlic? According to lore, the pungent-smelling plant can do everything from cure the common cold to help determine a baby’s sex to ward off witches. But though some believe garlic has powerful bug-repellent properties, mosquito control experts say it just does not work.
C/He/G-9 Oct. 19
Most people have seen advertisements for fancy ultrasonic mosquito repelling devices intended to drive off mosquitoes by subjecting them to repelling ultrasonic vibrations. These gadgets sound great, except for one thing-they don’t work. Both scientific and anecdotal evidence indicates that as mosquito repellents, ultrasonic really don’t seem to have any effect. Don’t be fooled by expensive, high-tech gadgets! OTHER WAYS TO DISCOURAGE THE BEAST • • • • • • • • •
Mosquito nets, and screens can be used in problem areas. Babies and young children should always be protected by cot, or pram covers. Avoid the use of perfumes or colognes Wear long sleeved, loose light-colored clothing while walking in garden areas. Personal repellants may be used; however, they should be used with caution in the very young, or the elderly. Make sure that your garden and surrounding area are free of water catchments, or that water containers are covered. Keep larvae eating fish, such as guppies, in ponds. Use chemical larvicides in ponds, drains or other water catchments. Remove garbage, or unnecessary pots, bottles, cans etc from the garden area. Mozzie repellant plug-ins, or vapor mats can be used indoors in the early mornings and late afternoons during the wet season.

BOOMER CORNER The Benefits of Cultivating Gratitude Rice paddies stretch out from our house. Flooded now, they reflect the sky with puff-ball clouds that turn pink then orange, gliding to shades of white as the morning sun rises. Chickens and white herons peruse the paddies foraging for insects and tiny critters that come with the flooding. Occasionally a heron flies right towards me as I sit on the veranda writing. It glides up over the roof at the last minute, its gray feet tucked neatly against its white body. How rare - a closeup view of the underside of a kokokan.
Cultivate Gratitude If gratitude doesn’t come spontaneously, you can cultivate it. Choose a time that works for you – maybe first thing upon waking, over dinner, or just before you go to bed, and think about what in your day you have to be thankful for. Choose one thing and if more come along give thanks for those too. It can be as simple as a hug from a friend, a compliment on your hair, or a beautiful view.
I count all of these as blessings. Gratitude arises filling my chest with warmth. My eyes smile.
The important thing here is to do it every day. This doesn’t take time. It’s easy and science is showing that positive emotions create lasting effects.
Gratitude is a Reset Button
The Benefits of Positive Emotions In our everyday lives, it’s easy to get caught up in the drama of the news, the challenges facing us and our families, dealing with anxiety, and concerns about our aging bodies. Gratitude can seem hidden.
And yet gratitude is a safety zone and a respite from our hectic world. It’s a way to take a deep breath and just be for the sake of being. When I was caring for my husband who had Alzheimer’s and life seemed bleak, some event would pull me back to gratitude and the light. It might have been as simple as a dragonfly landing on my hand or seeing a rainbow in a dewdrop caught on a banana leaf. Gratitude brings us back to the present moment where fear and anxiety don’t exist. It acts like a reset button to pull us out of despair.
Negative emotions such as fear or anger are a natural part of our instinctual survival techniques. We see a snake, a car coming at us, or a large coconut over our heads, and fear focuses our energy to avoid the threat and save ourselves. We have a disagreement with a friend and our anger consumes us well after we’ve had the confrontation. This is the problem with our habitual experience with negative emotions. They stay with us, clouding what is happening in our present moment experience. While we can’t avoid these emotions, because they are a natural part of us to ensure our survival, we can cultivate positive emotions, which have a lasting effect on our brains and our everyday lives. Research done at the University of North Carolina has found that positive emotions such as joy, contentment, gratitude, and love open our minds to more possibilities in our lives. Negative emotions narrow that field to a thin focus. One of the things I’m most grateful for is that gratitude comes easily for me. It has been with me most of my life even in the hard times - although admittedly, less frequently.
But not everyone finds this feeling easy and this is where a technique comes in handy. Gratitude Techniques Robert Emmons, the world’s leading scientific expert on gratitude, has studied gratitude for over a decade and written extensively about it. He suggests that for people challenged in feeling gratitude that they practice grateful emotions that include smiling, saying thank you, and writing letters of gratitude. The mere practice will cultivate real feelings. He also suggests nine other ways to cultivate gratitude including keeping a gratitude journal where you write down daily what you’re thankful for. I came across one I’d started several years ago and just reading my entries brought that warmth to my heart again. Those positive feelings had endured and created new ones. This morning I’m grateful for not just the herons in the rice paddies but also for being a contributor to Boomer Corner and being a part of the Bali ex-pat community. NEW YEAR, NEW FUTURES
It’s the end of January but still many of us are trying to figure out how to make some changes, both in our personal lives and in ways that will help the planet. The health magazines call Ubud “Asia’s yoga capital” so trying – or getting back to – some regular yoga makes a lot of sense, with both Taksu Spa and the Yoga Barn running excellent classes for novices. At the Barn, in a spacious big yoga space surrounded by relaxing tropical views, I’d recommend the beginner classes run by Estee, one of my favourite yoga teachers. Though she often has a large group, somehow Estee finds the time for giving personal advice; answering questions and making each individual feel welcome.
For others, the challenge is access to their children. Ibu Sari, founder of KIM Women’s Centre in Desa Puhu, Payangan, says she wasn’t allowed to see her daughter for 12 years after her divorce. She says that regardless of the individual circumstances, women are often not accepted back into their If you have friends coming to Bali, BAWA would love any own communities, becoming virtually homeless. donations of tick medications - or cash of course. Taksu Spa, on Jalan Gautama, specialises in small (no more than eight people) classes, with a variety of different tranquil settings to choose from. Their discounted 5, 10, 15 and 20-class passes, though non-transferable, can be used to bring along family or guests and introduce them to yoga too. After getting back into my old habit of waking up and doing seven “Salutes to the Sun” in the morning at home, I’m already feeling much more flexible (ok, I really mean less creaky) and energetic. Ready to tackle challenges outside my own patch, if you want a hand. TICKED OFF BAWA (Bali Animal Welfare Association) has a solid warning for anyone with dogs. At the BAWA clinic they are treating lots of dogs with nasty tick infestations this season. As ticks carry diseases that can cause anaemia, blindness, paralysis, and even death, it’s vital pay close attention to your dogs and make sure they are tick-free. Apart from the usual beverages there are also a nice range of fresh fruit mocktails. The Papaya and Tamarind is particularly refreshing. Though whilst the fruit has been refrigerated, the drinks are not blended with ice. So if, like me, you want your drinks icy cold some extra ice on the side fixes that problem. Pizzas form a large part of the offerings here, they are traditional Italian style pizzas with big bubbly crust rings, laden with a variety of toppings. All the standards are here Meat ragus should only ever be served with a wide flat [Margherita, Formaggi, Salsiccia, etc] plus a few more pasta, and pappardelle is the best option. The Ravioli is unusual ones [Polpette with meat balls, Chicken Cacciatora stuffed with pumpkin and served with parmesan, gorgonzola with stewed chicken and olives]. and crumbled walnuts. The Tagliatelle is with a duck ragu and oyster mushrooms whilst the Gnocchi is with shrimps. There is also a small Mickey Mouse pizza, for the kids. To all you can add as many extra toppings as you like. The mains Other pastas are also available; spaghetti, linguine, penne, are just four; pork [tenderloin with caramelized onions and orecchietti, fusilli, all prepared in your favourite style [pesto, red wine sauce], beef [tenderloin, grilled then sliced], chicken formaggi, etc]. The food is usually a selection of local pasta dishes and some grilled meats. Restaurant & Food
Update Punjabi Tadka is a new Indian restaurant on Jln
Seminyak. It features a large menu covering most of India’s regional cuisines; Meat and Vegetarian curries, Thali, Biriyanis, Kebabs from the Tandoor, even Indian breakfasts. Samosas [pictured] are amongst my all time favourite snack foods, particularly the vegetarian ones and these are very good. They come with two different dips but I always like a side of mango chutney as well to stuff inside the samosa.
compound found in marijuana plants, and experts believe its popularity is set to soar in 2020 - in everything from cocktails to meals. “Cannabis is the new kale,” says Rich Woods, coowner of London’s Scout, a venue that’s number 28 on the World’s Best Bars list. He predicts a bright future for CBD oil-infused drinks, commenting “2020 will continue to see the trend rise, with more high-street bars experimenting with it”. Food is in on it too, according to Annabel Wray and Victoria Knight of Hakuna Foods, which caters for the entertainment industry. “Restaurants, cafes and shops that provide food and drinks containing CBD are set to rise. We also expect there to be an increase in products, such as CBD-infused sparkling water and coffee, in supermarkets. ”It’s part of a wider trend, according to Chris Green, co-founder of Young Foodies. “Consumers are buying into products that bridge the gap between medicine and food, as we become increasingly conscious of the role food and drink plays in our mental wellbeing,” he says.
Umalas Breakfast Club is something different! As is the norm with Indian restaurants the range of vegetarian dishes is quite enormous. People often forget when considering vegetarian restaurants that Indian offers an incredible taste range, such as Aloo Jeera [boiled potatoes fried with cumin seeds, tomato, coriander and ginger] and Navrattan Korma [mixed vegetables, cottage cheese, fresh and dried fruits] or Dum Aloo [potatoes stuffed with dried fruit, cheese and khoya] . An Indian breakfast can be Parathas or a Masala Omelette but what corn flakes or worse still ‘bread, omelette and French fries’ are doing on an Indian menu I do not know?
Food Trends keep surprising you!. Last year, CBD burst
onto the scene, and by October YouGov reported one in ten Brits had used CBD products. CBD is a non-psychoactive
Needless to say the breakfasts are all day, mostly egg related plus many alternatives [pancakes, corn fritters and toast with toppings]. On Jln. Dukuh Indah it also has all of the healthy options.
Tippo’s is in Lod Tunduh [Jln. A.A. Gede Rai], just south of Ubud. As the cost of living steadily escalates in Central Ubud, more and more long term expats and tourists are seeking the outlying villages for their accommodation. The services quickly follow. There have always been local warungs in these areas but now specialist cafes are appearing to service the new demand. Tippo’s is such a place, even with Health Food options [Quinoa and Falafel Salads]. It is quite amazing to see items such as Eggs Benedict on a village menu such as this. Back in the 90’s it was almost impossible to find an edible Bacon & Eggs at such a place [the eggs were either a sloppy mess or a hard board, the
bacon so tough and impossible to cut, it had to be overcooked so you could break it and the supermarket white bread toast crumbled as soon as you touched it]. What an amazing development in just 20 years.
Luwus is the restaurant at the Secret Garden Resort, found at the 36km point on the Tabanan- Bedugul road and is a perfect stopping point on trips to the north. The food is very Balinese local, crispy duck and all that, but the surroundings are very relaxing and peaceful. Brunch Club gives you what you want, that all day breakfast and a bit more. On Jln. Legian it has American touches from a Melbourne [Australian] perspective. Breakfasts are the basic [croissant, French toast, frozen fruit bowls] to the more extensive [pancakes, breakfast burgers, smoked salmon bagel, chia seed pudding, Bircher muesli with apple, hazelnut and goji berries]. You can even have a ‘Green’ Omelette if that is what you want? All this is available all day, and can be had with one of their Bloody Marys, but after 12.00 midday the menu expands to include many Pizzas and Burgers [beef, veggie or a Portugese Chook burger, for the non-Australians a ‘chook’ is one of those things that run around the back yard laying eggs that other people call chickens].
The Golden Saffron is steadily getting a name for itself.
On Jln. Raya Kuta, Tuban, close to the airport, the first thing you note is just how many Indians are dining there, always a good indication as to traditional tastes and good value. They have extensive veg and non-veg Thali platters. The concept of Thali is to offer all the 6 different flavours of sweet, salt, bitter, sour, astringent and spicy on one single plate. It is also very reasonably priced.

R O TA R Y NEWS Thank You from The Rotary Club of Bali Canggu
On Bali we are rebuilding a house in North Bali for a disadvantaged family introduced to us by Solemen who identified their plight after part of the house collapsed. The cost for this is Rp65,000,000. So far we have raised around Rp.38,000,000 for this and are setting up a “Sponsor a Brick” campaign to raise the rest of the money. In the meantime construction will commence. If you would like to donate to this or any of our projects then please send your donation to the account listed below.
We are increasing our membership in the coming year, so if you would like to help and be part of a family style group of friends, why not join us for our bi-weekly meetings held on the first and third Tuesday of every month in the Tugu Hotel in Batu Bolong from 6pm. Our meetings typically include an inspiring guest speaker and usually run from 6:30pm to 7:30pm. WhatsApp 08113998850 for more details. As well as getting together with like-minded people, learning about club projects and listening to guest speakers present interesting topics, you are more than welcome to join RCBC members, along with visiting Rotarians and guests after the meeting finishes for drinks and snacks. We’d love to meet you and welcome you to help us by becoming part of the solution.
We would like to say Happy New Year and a very big thank you to members of our local community who supported the Rotary Club of Bali Canggu’s (RCBC) throughout 2019. The latter part of 2019 RCBC was largely focused on making plans for supporting children on Lombok to supply books for two libraries, one in the north of the island and one in the south. We already have the money earmarked for this and if we have surplus, we will add extra toilets to a nearby school that currently only has 2 toilets for 300 students. In November we carried out a feasibility study on Sumba island to supply hand dug wells to 3 villages around Kodi Belagar, Sumba Barat Daya, NTT.
Conversely, if you want to help us but simply don’t have the time to be hands on then consider making a donation, either one off or recurring to help us realise our projects and change lives. Huge thanks to our Rotarian Donna Greene for her tireless fundraising efforts to help support our projects here and on other islands. We really appreciate your hard work and dedication Donna.
Donations to: Account Name: Rotary Bali Canggu Account No.: 8113999992 Bank: BNI
Western Sumba is generally deprived of access to potable water and access to water becomes particularly limited during the dry season from April to October. The Kodi Belagar area has a particular water issue as there are no hills in the area, natural springs are nearly non-existent and people have to walk long distances to get to deep wells, or spend money getting the water trucked in from deep bore wells or local rivers. Further the population in Kodi is the poorest on Sumba island and also the least educated.
Branch: Renon Swift Code: BNINIDJARNN
And of course thanks to our supporters. We are not able to run social projects like this and events like these without your continued support and commitment to help.
The current project aims to raise support for the construction of three hand dug water wells in the Kodi Belagar area to provide potable water for around 1,000 people in need.
Who is Rotary Canggu? We are a small yet passionate group (15 members growing) of like-minded people who offer service support to local projects and good causes. And we passionate about serving the Canggu community beyond.
and and are and
Once again thank you to everyone for making our thriving and energetic club such a great success! Mark Savage President RCBC 2018 -2019 Phone: +628113998850

The Frugal Balinist * Ride in style! Since airfares are triple what they were a year ago, buses are now an attractive option. More accurately described as “luxury coaches,” buses traveling west out of Bali have toilets, comfortable reclining airline-style seats and include snacks and meals. Every passenger is given a blanket and pillow.
out well-known shoe/boot companies like Sagara, Jalan Sriwijaya, Winson, Txture, Junkard and Santalum make luxury foot ware that are quite popular in Japan and the U.S. among shoes enthusiasts. *Indonesian boots are interesting due to the construction, shapes and styles. The skill required to make a sturdy boot by hand takes at least five years to learn and the process of making a boot takes 2-3 days. *Indonesians consider the Caterpillar the ultimate high-quality boot. *The most popular Santalum boot is the Service boot, very similar to the Viberg service boot. *Bandung Collection shops, found in every sizeable city in Bali, sells high quality shoe ware at local prices.
* Multipurpose cleaning tool
These coaches take the toll roads on Java, so fares have gone up from, for example, Rp250,000 from Bali to C. Java before the toll roads to now around Rp300,000. High volume music videos play non-stop, so sit as far away from the monitors as possible if you don’t like noise. Passengers’ phones take turns charging from multiple power outlets on or near the driver. The bus stops about half-way at a buffet restaurant for meals, water, ice tea or hot tea. *The fanciest buses from Bali to Yogya (Rp350,000), Bandung and Jakarta are operated by Pahala Kencana. Cheaper buses to all around Java are run by Gunung Harta, Sedyamulya, Safari Darma Raya and Restu Mulya; approximate fare: DenpasarYogya Rp270,000, Denpasar-Malang Rp200,000, DenpasarSurabaya Rp180,000. *If you stand on Jl. Bypass west of Denpasar’s Ubung Terminal in a place where it’s easy for a bus to stop, you are often able to bargain the official fare down considerably. (However, if the bus is inspected by a company employee, they might make you hide in the toilet.) *Trains are also more competitive now, about the same cost as buses because bus fares have risen because of toll road surcharges.
strength of the tightly bound sapu lidi is also a symbol of national unity. * Unsung heroes Wardah cosmetic products are cheaper but just as good (and safe) as more expensive brands like Caring Colours by Martha Tilaar. *Teh Botol Less Sugar is not as sweet and is more refreshing than Teh Botol sweetened tea, sold everywhere, which is no longer bottled in glass but in plastic which imparts an unnatural flavour. Teh Kotak, on the other hand, is packaged in paper, thus has a more natural taste and is also more eco-friendly. The Pucuk is yet another more pleasant alternative. *Bango brand kecap manis (sweet soy sauce) is preferred by many over the ABC brand.
The sapu lidi is a broom made from middle dried ribs/veins (lidi) of either coconut or areca palm fronds (sapu) tied together to form a hard broom. Different lengths and thicknesses of this traditional Indonesian and S.E. Asian “coconut” broom are used for specific purposes. You can take the spines from a larger broom apart and then tie them together again in desired sizes/thicknesses to serve a number of unique uses.
This less chemicalized sauce is used to cook many iconic dishes like semur (Indonesian beef stew with potatoes and tofu), nasi goreng (fried rice) and mie goreng (fried noodles). There was a time when Indonesian shoes were popular in Europe and S.E. Asia until the Vietnamese took over the Different types of sapu lidi are usually not interchangeable. Alternative Voice Vitamin B12 – the Hidden Deficiency
Vegetarians & Vegans even greater risk than supposed, reports show As a vegetarian or vegan you are probably aware of the dangers of nutrient deficiency in the nutrients B12 and also ( but less well known), choline. Despite this knowledge, what you may not be aware of is the research showing vegetarians, and more particularly vegans suffer widespread deficiencies of these vital nutrients. If you do follow an exclusively plant-based diet to improve your health you will probably have done your homework but if - over time, you’ve started to experience troubling symptoms such as brain fog, fatigue, poor memory, and even numbness or tingling in your hands and feet - it may be due to a vitamin B12 deficiency. Omnivores are also at risk, with reports indicating that vitamin B12 deficiency is far more prevalent than previously estimated, with at least 40 percent of Americans having suboptimal levels, and millions more going undiagnosed altogether. The consequences of B12 deficiency are serious and can cause irreversible damage if left untreated. The classic symptom of vitamin B12 deficiency is anemia, but is only one symptom of B12 deficiency. There are others that occur long before anemia sets in.
Those same forces also seek to profit from the current popularity and promotion of the vegan diet. While many vegans are aware of the risks and take appropriate steps to mitigate them, most importantly supplementing with vitamin B12, many more are not. But more to the point, supplementation doesn’t always solve the problem. Many studies show even vegans that supplement with B12 are deficient, and one study found that vegans that supplemented with B12 had lower levels than those that didn’t. What does that say about the absorbability of a lot of B12 formulations you may well ask? If you simply don’t eat meat it’s not to hard to get the vitamin B12 you need; dairy, fish and seafood can do it. The best dietary sources of getting vitamin B12 into your diet are: liver, clams, oysters, mussels, fish eggs, octopus, fish, crab and lobster, beef, lamb, cheese and eggs. If you think you have a deficiency the first step is to get a holo-TC and/or urinary MMA test. If either of them is abnormal, take immediate steps to increase B12 levels, either eating B12-rich foods or by supplementing.
Veganism is a valid, if not admirable, life choice but anyone adopting the diet needs to have done their homework or may pay a stiff price. The history of medicine and healthcare is littered with unintended consequences. Most notorious of these being the low-fat, so-called “heart healthy” diet, where in a prolonged campaign of distorted science and staggering mendacity, aide and abetted by wilful negligence, practiced over decades we were told to avoid fat and cholesterol at all costs, with no consideration for the quality of the carbohydrates we ate, leading to the proliferation of highly processed and refined, low-fat, highcarbohydrate foods that we now know increase the risk of heart disease—unlike the fats we were told to avoid...
Choline plays an especially important role during pregnancy. The amniotic fluid surrounding the baby in the womb is highly enriched with 14 times the level of choline found in the mother’s blood. Sadly, reports show that 90 to 95 percent of women fail to meet recommended choline intakes during pregnancy. All of which raises an important question: given that most people—especially pregnant women - don’t get enough choline as it is - should mainstream dietary organizations (not to mention celebrities) be recommending a diet that makes it almost impossible to meet the RDA for this critical nutrient without supplementation?
The highest food sources of choline (by 100 g weight): • Beef liver: 431 mg; Eggs: 226 mg; Beef steak: 106 mg; Salmon: 90 mg; Pork chops: 78 mg; Chicken breast: 62 mg; Almonds: 53 mg; Broccoli: 40 mg
Unfortunately, such symptoms are often mistaken for other health conditions and often missed by physicians in the clinical setting, with serious implications for patients’ longterm health.
Vitamin B12 is found almost exclusively in animal foods. For this reason, vegetarians and vegans are doubly prone to deficiency. While early studies showed that vegetarians and vegans had only slightly higher rates of deficiency than omnivores, these studies used relatively insensitive markers, such as serum B12. The newer, more sensitive measures of B12 status indicate that the prevalence of B12 deficiency is much higher in vegetarians and vegans than previously believed.
Choline is crucial for almost everything. Let me count the ways... the gut, skin, brain and nervous system, and reproductive system. Choline deficiency can lead to mood disorders, muscle spasms, poor memory and learning, poor fetal and infant development, and a whole lot more. Low choline levels have been associated with everything from Alzheimer’s disease to liver disease.
In a recent editorial in British Medical Journal, a nutritionist in the UK argued that the answer to this question is an emphatic no.
They include: dementia, cognitive decline, memory loss, brain fog, depression, cardiovascular problems, peripheral neuropathy, impaired immune function, infertility, developmental and learning disabilities.
Fortunately, new, more sensitive tests for B12 deficiency exist and studies using these improved methods of B12 assessment reveal much higher levels of deficiency than studies using only serum B12 testing. The best of these, the Holo-TC is the earliest, most sensitive indicator of B12 deficiency. Serum B12 being the least.
Neither do most omnivores —which is why, however counter-intuitive it may be for many of us, we are advised to include liver and egg yolks in our diet.
100 g of liver contains 10 times as much choline as does the same amount of broccoli. So pescatorians and vegetarians, let alone vegans take note, and up your fish (salmon), nuts and green veggies accordingly.
Methylcobalamin is by far the most effective form of B12 supplementation because it bypasses several steps in the B12 absorption cycle and readily crosses the blood-brain barrier. It also provides the body with methyl groups that play a role in various biological processes critical to overall health. To work you must take an adequate dose. We now know that the dose of B12 in a supplement needs to be 100 times higher than the RDA and you need 250 micrograms/day. If deficient the dose needs to be 500 micrograms/day. The take-away message is, essentially, conventional B12 testing misses the 70 percent of vegetarians and 40 percent of vegans that are B12 deficient. That is a massive oversight that can have devastating consequences for the long-term health of both vegetarians and vegans. Don’t forget Choline... Choline is another master nutrient that vegans don’t get enough of.
As the BMJ points out, eggs, organ meats, and meats are the primary sources of choline in the diet, and “further movements away from the consumption of these could have unintended consequences for choline intake/status”, they warn. This has to be a concern in light of veganism’s growing popularity in the US and other industrialized countries— especially because few organizations that promote a vegan diet are recommending choline supplementation. So, if you or someone you know—particularly a woman of childbearing age—is on a vegan diet or considering starting one, pay attention to choline intake. And - if you’re on an omnivore, but you’re not eating eggs or organ meats, pay heed too.

Local News Bali narcotics officers find large amount of marijuana in Canggu boarding house Bali narcotics officers (BNNP) discovered a large stash of marijuana last week in fashionable Canggu. 31.6 kilograms of marijuana in 53 bags was found in the room of suspect, G.R, in a boarding house in the Canggu area of North Kuta on Thursday. “The suspect has already been arrested a number of times by Bali BNNP. They believe he is part of a Bali-Medan network. The amount of evidence was huge, too,” said a witness to balipost.com on Sunday.
26 Massive fire engulfs Bintang Supermarket in Seminyak, no casualty reported A massive fire engulfed Bintang Supermarket in Seminyak earlier this week, along with a number of stores and kiosks located in the same area. According to reports, the fire started at around 3am from the back of Bintang Supermarket. It soon spread to other stores nearby, and firemen battled with the blaze until about 5am. “It was quite difficult as everything was locked and we were late to the scene, so the fire grew really big. The roof was perforated so we shot the water from above, but if we were able to open the doors from the beginning we might have been able to control the fire,” I Wayan Wirya, fire department chief in Badung regency, told Tribun. Bintang Supermarket is a popular supermarket chain in Bali, with locations in Ubud and Seminyak. Bintang Supermarket Operations Manager, Agus Sanjaya explained that the supermarket stands on an area of about one hectare, inside the supermarket, there are nine tenants besides Bintang’s own management. “For us, everything inside was destroyed,” said the manager. Sanjaya estimated that the total losses from the fire for Bintang is more than Rp 40 billion. “The total loss can be above Rp 40 billion, however we do have goods and building insurance,” he said.
The witness also said that the Bali BNNP Eradication Team suspected that the sender was a big dealer based in Medan and sent the packages to GR, who was on standby in Bali. The packages were sent by courier on Wednesday and arrived in Bali the next day. “After the package was received, the suspect was immediately arrested. When they searched his house, they found marijuana being dried in the sun,” he added. The suspect and the evidence were brought to the BNNP Bali Office on Jalan Kamboja, Kereneng, East Denpasar. BNNP officers are still investigating the case. (Seminyaktimes.com 21/1/20) Bali ports increase health monitoring amid Wuhan coronavirus outbreak After the airport authorities in Greater Jakarta began ramping up the health monitoring of incoming passengers, other airports across the archipelago are following suit amid concerns about a pneumonia-like outbreak in China and some other countries. Since December last year, dozens of cases of the pneumonia-like coronavirus have been reported in Wuhan. I Gusti Ngurah Rai International Airport authorities in Denpasar, Bali had installed thermal scanners on two of the airport’s international arrival gates to anticipate any coronavirus transmission that was suspected to be the cause of the pneumonia.
said, he continued, employed 160 people and had a turnover of approximately Rp 700 million per day. “70 percent of our customers are foreigners,” said Agus Sanjaya.
Agus is sure that supermarket will rise again after all the fire business is settled. He was quoted elsewhere as saying it will take seven months to reconstruct. “After this, in principle, we shall rise again and we will improve,” he said. Videos of the terrible fire made its rounds on social media this week, showing the extent of the situation earlier as well as the Bintang supermarket in Seminyak has been around since aftermath, which reportedly affected about a 3,400 square 1996. “There was no inkling or indication of anything meter area. Authorities have yet to determine what caused untoward before the incident. In fact, we had just finished the the fire, but said that there were no reports of casualties or Odalan ceremonies for the full moon the day before,” Agus injuries from the incident. Badung targets 6.2 million foreign tourists in 2020 Badung District in Bali Province, has set a target of attracting some 6.2 million foreign tourists during 2020. “So in 2020, based on the Regional Medium-Term Development Plan (RPJMD) we set a target of 6.2 million people. That target is very moderate for us to achieve,” I Made Badra, the Head of the Badung Tourism Office, said here Friday. He is upbeat that the target is achievable as the district received some 6.2 million foreign tourists in 2019. “If we intensify tourism promotion activities in 2020, and with the support of conducive situations and information on security, and tourist comfort, we are very optimistic that we can achieve the target,” he said. The local tourism office plans to evaluate the target in June of July and might increase it if the tourism industry’s trend is improving. Of the total 6.2 million tourists, he expects some two million to come from China this year. Besides tourists from
China, Badung also targets around 1.6 million tourists from Australia and New Zealand, 1.8 million tourists from European countries, and 600 thousand tourists from India. (Antara.com 21/1/20)
Bali prosecutors demand 3.5 years for Mauritanian who allegedly spent IDR400 million using stolen credit card Prosecutors at the Denpasar Court yesterday demanded that Roughaya Abeidi, a 31-year-old Mauritanian woman accused of stealing a British tourist’s credit card, be sentenced to three and a half years in prison. “The defendant had taken something that belonged to another person and this is in violation of Article 362 of KUHP,” prosecutor Ni Putu Eriek Sumyanti told the court, referring to Indonesia’s criminal code. Article 362 carries a maximum of five years’ imprisonment. According to several reports, Abeidi threw a water bottle upon leaving the courtroom yesterday, seemingly angry with the prosecutors’ demand.
“The scanners have been installed since Jan. 4 and their activation followed the recent updates on the global epidemic,” said Putu Alit Sudarma, an official of the Denpasar Port health office, on Saturday, as quoted by Antara news agency. He added that the office had also intensified health monitoring in seaports across the island. “However, there are not yet any ships coming to China that landed in Bali this month.” The Health Ministry has issued a travel advisory for Indonesians who wish to travel to countries affected by the Wuhan coronavirus and handed out health alert cards to passengers arriving from China and other affected countries. Authorities also said that all 135 entry points into the country had been equipped with thermal scanners that could identify a person’s body temperature remotely through cameras. As of Monday, Reuters reported that the total number of known cases worldwide was more than 200, with most cases - 198 - reported in Wuhan, which recorded three deaths. South Korea had also reported its first confirmed case on Monday. Scientists believe that the recent pneumonia outbreak is likely caused by a new virus belonging to the same family of coronaviruses that causes the severe acute respiratory syndrome (SARS). The syndrome killed nearly 800 people globally during an outbreak in 2002 and 2003 that also started in China. (Jakartapost.com 22/1/20)
Abeidi was arrested back in October, after she allegedly stole a credit card belonging to a British tourist, identified as Holly Jemima Hartley. Abeidi allegedly purchased more than IDR400 million (US$29,272) worth of goods, mostly at fancy malls in
Bali, using the stolen card, which eventually led to her arrest. (coconuts.com 21/1/20)
Stuck in Bali airport traffic? Airport to get LRT access to reduce congestion Bali Airport will soon get a facelift through the development of a South Korea-backed light rail transit (LRT) service to reduce traffic congestion in the area, an executive of the project’s construction firm has said. State-owned construction firm Nindya Karya signed Thursday a memorandum of understanding (MoU) with South Korean public company Korea Rail Network Authority (KRNA), and Korea Overseas Infrastructure and Urban Development Corporation for the Rp 5 trillion (US$400 million) project. The LRT will span 4.78 kilometers with four stations between a would-be satellite terminal in Kuta, Bali’s tourist epicenter, and the airport, Nindya Karya acting president director Haedar A. Karim, said. “The project is the first step to a green city and transit-oriented development in Seminyak and Kuta,” Haedar said after the MoU signing in Jakarta. The LRT service could benefit millions of visitors who travel in and out of the airport each year by providing an alternative means of transport to the airport. Around 5.7 million people went through the airport’s gates between January and November last year, Statistics Indonesia (BPS) data show. Construction for the project would kick off around three months after the MoU signing (about June 2020), Haedar said. He expressed hope that the LRT would be able to start running in one-and-a-half to two years. “It will
look like [Jakarta’s] MRT,” Haedar said, adding that it would be built 30 meters below surface level. “We will build the LRT fully underground because in [Balinese] culture, building above [15 meters] is forbidden.” Aside from Bali’s LRT project, KRNA has also provided $500 million to finance the development of the LRT serving the velodrome facility in Rawamangun, East Jakarta, to Dukuh Atas, Central Jakarta.
