It comes as no surprise that the theme of this year’s festival is ‘Water, Women and Children’. Women and children are often the most affected by this water crisis and the thinking behind this year’s concept. The Denpasar Film Festival also aims to educate, inspire and foster competition amongst film makers. Podcasts for Health and Fitness This week, I return to the varied world of podcasts to focus on those to do with health. Podcasts are prerecorded radio-style shows, often featuring interviews with prominent people in the area of the podcast’s theme. Generally, they run about 30-45 minutes. You can download them to a digital device or laptop for later listening or stream them. The great thing about podcasts is that, like music, you can do something else (which doesn’t require a great deal of attention or focus) while you listen to them: walk along the beach, run on a treadmill, ride a stationary bike, wash the dishes or cook a meal, while you learn or have your mind broadened at the same time. My favorite time to listen to podcasts is just before bed. Podcasts are the perfect social media to consume in the two-hour window before bedtime where you should avoid the ‘blue light’ emitted by devices, because you’re not viewing, you’re only listening. On the down side, the soothing voice of a calm host can inadvertently put you to sleep. Here’s a selection of popular health podcasts, by category. They cover general nutrition, fitness, Paleo, low carb and vegetarian or vegan diets. Listen and learn! GENERAL NUTRITION The Nutrition Diva’s Quick and Dirty Tips Monica Reinagel, a nutritionist and the host of Nutrition Diva, gives well-researched advice in a short podcast (about ten minutes). She discusses topics such as eating grains, gluten-free, weight loss and many more. Reinagel also explores a lot of myths and misconceptions about food and drink. Dishing Up Nutrition The hosts of this podcast are licensed nutritionists and dieticians from Nutritional Weight and Wellness, a Minnesota-based counselling and education center, who explore the link between ‘what you eat and how you feel.’ The podcast offers a ‘call-in’ format, answering listeners questions directly about healthy eating, diet and nutrition. Fat2Fit Podcast This podcast is part of the Fit2Fat brand created by Drew Manning, the author of the bestselling Fit2Fat2Fit book. The show is hosted by Russ Turley, Helana Brigman and Jeff Ainslie, experts on fitness and nutrition, who discuss natural health, fitness, nutrition, bio hacking and wellness. The hosts often focus on the science but don’t forget the psychological or emotional aspects, particularly when dealing with weight loss. New episodes are not being produced currently, but you can access archived past episodes. Half Size Me This podcast focusses on on helping people lose weight in a healthy and sustainable way. Host Heather Robertson interviews people about their weight loss programs, strategies and successes. Robertson herself lost 70 pounds over 5 years. She focuses on slow weight loss and a lifestyle that maintains a healthy weight. The podcast also features a ‘Ask Coach Heather’ session in which Robertson answers listeners questions. TedTalks Health The classic TED talks brand also hosts a a podcast on health issues. While this podcast focusses on a broad range of medical topics, it includes many fitness, nutrition and wellness subjects. VEGETARIAN/VEGAN No Meat Athlete Radio Host Matt Frazier talks about vegan and vegetarian nutrition, running, athletic training, healthy lifestyle and changing habits. He interviews experts in these areas. Frazier has run several ultra-marathons and qualified for the Boston Marathon while fueled entirely by a vegan diet. His podcast is popular with athletes and runners who are wanting to make the switch to or maintain a plant-based diet. Realize Yourself Podcast In this weekly podcast, clinical nutritionist and author Kimberly Snyder discusses topics on health, beauty, fitness, emotional health, hydration, sleep, eating a plant-based diet and many more. The Rich Roll Podcast Host Rich Roll is an ultra-athlete, wellness expert and best-selling author who transformed himself from a standard couch potato into a vegan endurance athlete. Roll interviews

athletes, nutrition and fitness experts, and others on his podcast who share advice and stories. He gets his interviewees to walk through the steps they took to find their own ‘personal best’ fit and healthy lifestyle to inspire listeners. Roll is the author of best-selling The Tale of the Unlikely Ultra Marathoner, which documents his personal transformation. PALEO/LOW CARB Balanced Bites: This podcast covers a range of current topics in health and nutrition, with a focus on low-carb and grain-free Paleo diets. The podcast is hosted by Diane Sanfilippo, a Certified Nutrition Consultant and the bestselling author of Practical Paleo and The 21-Day Sugar Detox, together with Liz Wolfe, a Nutritional Therapy Practitioner and the author of Eat the Yolks. The hosts have a chatty, laidback style that is also highly informative for anyone curious about, or following, a low-carb and Paleo lifestyle.

The Paleo Solution Podcast: This podcast, hosted by Robb Wolf, discusses topics and questions about Paleo, intermittent fasting, ketosis, fatburning, training, longevity, nutrition, fitness and health. Wolf trained as a biochemist and was a powerlifting champion. He regularly interviews guests who are well known in the Paleo-sphere and fitness worlds. Fat Burning Man Hosted by Abel James, this podcast focuses on changing your body, mind and life with ‘cutting edge science and common-sense wisdom.’ James is a living example of his own philosophy, having lost 20 pounds in 40 days. He advocates Paleo and low-carb diets. Bulletproof Radio Many of you may be familiar with Dave Asprey as the creator of Bulletproof Coffee. Asprey has spent 15 years exploring the ideal diet for the human body and developing ‘hacks’ to lead to peak performance, both physical and mental. He dropped over 100 pounds while refining his approach to diet and fitness. Asprey interviews doctors, biochemists, Olympic nutritionists, meditation experts and others to tease out the methods, eating, fitness and hacks for re-wiring bodies, minds and lives. Asprey uses his podcast to answer the question: “What are the simplest things you can do to be better at everything?”

FITNESS Marathon Training Academy This podcast is all about running, particularly marathon running. Hosts Angie and Trevor Spencer are both marathon runners. Angie is also a registered nurse and certified running coach. The hosts offer advice on all aspects of running, such as the best way to fuel your body, dealing with injuries and compression clothing. They take direct questions from listeners. Ben Greenfield Fitness Ben Greenfield is a nutritionist, coach, Ironman participant and triathlete, with degrees in exercise physiology and biomechanics. He is widely considered an expert in training methods for elite athletes. Greenfield breaks these methods down for regular exercisers, discussing bio-hacks, workout routines, diet, fitness and other topics. He also talks about body biomechanics, with plans and strategies for getting fit or fitter.

Katy Says The host of this podcast, coach Katy Bowman, has a unique approach to fitness. She has developed a system of what she calls ‘restorative exercise’ which deals with the body in a holistic way. Her method attempts to restore the natural body movements that humans experienced before they starting sitting at desks and on couches and having a modern lifestyle. Bowman also discusses healing from injuries and effective stretching. Consider adding listening to a podcast to your daily life. I find podcasts add knowledge and inspiration to my life, and I don’t have to find extra time to listen as I can build them into my regular routine.

Update

Cosmic Diners are American-style C d diners and are found in Sanur [Jln. B ByPass Ngurrah Rai, southern end], T Tuban [Lippo Mall, Jl. Kartika Plaza] and a at the original site on Sunset Road. They h have many interesting dishes that are u unique to them, some of which have a to touch of Asian added to the base American di diner menu. The latest is the great budget pr priced Rice Bowls. There are three of th them, each a bowl of steamed rice with a va variety of toppings. The Black Pepper Beef is sshredded meat stir-fried in black pepper sa sauce topped with shavings of crisp onion. Po Pork Belly, double cooked in soy is another, sha sharing the bowl with a fried egg and sautéed corn kernels [pictured]. Both are excellent but the Chicken version was perfect! The chicken, as fish, so often overcooked in Bali, was tender and moist. The use of chicken thighs instead of the more common breast provided more taste, a light infusion with teriyaki sauce just right, with broccoli and carrots sprinkled with garlic chips. Great simple dishes! At the new Sanur location the train inside the restaurant proper [a replica of a classic train carriage] is proving to be a very popular meeting place and has already been the setting for thousands of photographs on social media…..see you @ The Cosmic Train!

Habitat on Monkey Forest Road, Ubud, at the Padang Tegal end and directly opposite the giant new car park for the Monkey Forest, keeps on introducing new and tempting dishes. For breakfast there is the Duo Avocado on Toast. The execution of this dish begins with a slice of very healthy rye bread, split down the middle. Both of the halves have a base of smashed avocado spread on them, one is topped with a tomato salsa, lemon cured salmon and feta cheese. The other half has a poached egg and hollandaise sauce on top, with grilled tomato and sautéed spinach is on the side. Another unique dish, and available all day, is the Pho-Ritto. Combining two of the most popular dishes from the Vietnamese and Mexican cuisines thinly sliced beef is cooked in a Pho broth. This is added to rice noodles, cilantro, a dash of hoisin sauce and a dab of sriratcha mayonnaise, bean sprouts, sautéed capsicum and onion, all rolled in a tortilla wrap. On the side pickled vegetables in a green salad. Healthy food that tastes great!

Stiff Chilli on the beach at Semawang, south of Sanur is one of Sanur’s best budgetpriced restaurants, and that is without factoring in the pleasant cooling sea breeze. Interesting pasta combinations include Prawn and Chorizo Linguini, with large prawns, chorizo, Lombok chilli, paprika, fresh tomato garlic and lime, or Tagliolini all’inchiostro, squid ink pasta with smoked marlin cream sauce. Even the pasta with meat is a cheap eat: Agnolotti Pollo Funghi, chicken and mushroom filled pasta, with a mushroom, thyme, garlic cream sauce. Seafood and meat dishes as well; a Bintang battered Mahi Mahi or Gamberone alla Griglia, prawns grilled with garlic parsley and lime served with salad and chips. Then there is the always popular Sicilian “Bangers and Mash”, 2 large tomato and onion beef sausages on a bed of mashed potato, topped with an Italian salsa of tomato, onion, garlic, chilli and olives. Great Value!

La Mien is one of the many budget-priced eateries on Jln. Goutomo, in Ubud [a walkway that has proved to be so popular that the banjar is about to resurface it with paving stones]. La Mien is one of the best. It is operated by the Ryoshi Group, enough said! Ramen noodles are the main attraction. They are available in a selection of build-yourself options [a small bowl of noodles, add your broth of choice and then your topping]. Normal size traditional portions are also available from the a la carte menu [topped with slices of pork confit] as well as many other standard dishes from the popular Ramen Boy outlet on Sunset Road [another great cheap eatery]. These include starters Sesame Chicken & Cold Noodle Salad, Siu Mai, Zangi and Katsu Curry. There is also a special Curry Udon [chicken or beef], those popular Gyoza [pork or vegetarian], Hiyashi Chuka, and Chicken or Beef Terriyaki. Another feature here is the special ‘Japanese Vodka’. It is made at Ryoshi’s Karang Asem distillery. Two styles are served. Chu Hai is the neat spirit with a range of fruit juices added [cranberry. apple, pomegranate, etc.], whilst Sho-Chu has been infused with tea [Early Grey, Jasmine or Shenlong] or Luwak Coffee. At Rp. 25,000++ a glass both are very popular with the Japanese diners, and all others.

Thai-Indo is on Jln Dewi Sri, Legian, which is the street that now houses quite a range of cheap eateries. This one could be best described as Thai-style; Thai cuisine as seen by an Indonesian. However, whilst the serves are quite small [the steamed rice being the most filling part] the taste is good and no one could complain about the low price. As with many non-Thai restaurants in Indonesia there is a Tom Yum soup. The Som Tam [using papaya or young mango], Chicken Pandan [chicken pieces wrapped in pandan leaves] and Yam Woon Sen [cold noodles and seafood, slightly sour] are more Thai. There is Phat Phet Kai, chicken cooked with basil, a fried egg on top, but pieces of chicken not minced as in Kra Pao. Traditional red and green curries are on the menu as is the universal Chicken and Cashew. The chilli content is very limited so ask for it spicy if you want to feel it. Finish with Mango and sticky rice. Sate House is also found on Dewi Sri [next door to Thai-Indo, which is next to The White House]. Not surprisingly it specialises in Sate, and more varieties than I have ever seen before. Chicken, Prawn, Duck, Tempe, Squid, Beef and Minced Fish [Lilit] are common but goat and quail eggs are more unusual. They also offer a range of basic Indonesian dishes; Gado-Gado, Nasi Goreng, BBQ Beef Short Ribs, etc.

Cheap Eats are still available in Bali. Even though the prices on many menus keep on increasing there are still many bargains to be found. All the dishes featured in this edition of the column are available at less than Rp.100,000 and that includes all taxes and service charge, some of the dishes mentioned are only half that price. A Thai Hang Out! Hang Out describes a place where you ‘hang out with friends’. It is most likely at a café, bar or pub? Hang Out in Renon is such a place but it is also a great little restaurant presenting authentic street food from Thailand. It is a simple place from the outside but quite pleasant inside. There is a small general dining area and an inner private dining room [for up to 20 persons] both airconditioned. At the front is a small open terrace for the smokers. If you are just hanging out then there are interesting snacks to nibble. Crisp Chicken Skins in a light batter are deep-fried as are alternate offerings of mixed vegetables or chicken pieces. The Chicken Wings are done three different ways, crisp & spicy, in fish sauce or Bangkok style. Then there is a group of dishes that can be snacks or entrees up to a full meal. Gai Tod Bai Toey is on the menu simply as Pandan Chicken. The chicken pieces have already been removed from the pandan wrapping although the flavour remains, they are served with a chilli dip rather than the traditional tamarind reduction. Thai Spring Rolls are more Indonesian than Thai whilst the Tod Mun Gai, balls of minced chicken, combined with a red curry, crumbed and fried, and are listed as chicken cakes, are moist and tasty. Som Tum is what everyone associates with Thai salads, a mix of shredded green papaya, lime and chilli. Sour and spicy as are many of the dishes that originated in Thailand’s north-east province of Isaan, most of which have been adopted from Lao cuisine. Other salads on the menu at Hang Out, all with the same spicy sour combo, are Corn, Glass Noodles and Pork. Laab is another Lao specialty, again spicy and sour with minced pork The most recognisable Thai soup is the much-copied Tom Yum Goong, prawns, again sour and spicy. Unusual

QUICK REVIEW variations of this are also available here with chicken, minced pork and mushroom. Kra Pao means basil. Kra Pao Moo [minced pork with basil, + chilli, etc] is the most popular in Thailand but Kra Pao Gai with minced chicken is the most common version outside of Thailand. Both are available here and are quite unique in that the meat is in small pieces rather than minced and the basil is a handful of fresh holy basil which they often have a problem in obtaining. For me this is a dish I can enjoy for breakfast, lunch or as an anytime snack. It arrives with a serve of steamed rice on top of which is a flash-fried egg [crisp white, soft yolk]. At Hang Out the Kra Pao is excellent, nicely spiced but with a side dish of sliced chilli in oil for you to add if you want to up the temperature. Stir-fries are headed by Tod Kra Tiam Prik Thai, and can be chicken, prawns or pork, with garlic and pepper. Pad Thai is the classic Thai noodle dish [rice noodles, egg, tofu, dried shrimps, peanuts, etc], Pad Thai Goong is the same but with prawns. Another popular anytime dish as is the light fluffy flat Thai Omelette. Stir-fried Paprika is actually Thai Red Peppers, they are also with chicken, prawn or pork. The Fried Garlic Pepper Pork Balls [Thai bakso] did not quite work, as they were a bit too dry.

Thai curries are the base of almost every Thai meal, at Hang Out there are two; Chicken Green Curry and Minced Pork Red Curry. Khao Pad [fried rice] comes in many different forms here. The basic is with chicken or pork pieces but they also do some combining a curry or soup with the rice before wok-frying; Red Curry [prawns, chicken, pork] or Tom Yum [prawns]. Fusion food is all the rage in the cafes of Bangkok such as the Black Canyon chain. What they really mean is just combining Italian pasta [replacing the normal serve of rice] with Thai dishes. Hang Out gets into this with Macaroni dishes, served with either chicken or prawns in a tomato sauce. The standard way to finish a Thai meal is with a dessert of Mango and Sticky Rice, but far better with durian if you can handle it? Thailand street food at virtual Bangkok street food prices, Hang Out is a place where you can afford to eat at, anytime. Not only that, it is the real taste of Thailand.

Sweet Smell of Success

Chef Massimo shares his secrets by ParacelsusAsia Have you ever asked yourself what it takes to run a successful business here in Bali with over 100 employees? When it comes to business Bali brings its very own gifts and challenges, which require a particular set of talents to make it work. That means hard work and constant presence, plus a genuine interest in the welfare of every one of your employees. That’s not something you can fake or delegate. Nor is it something that always comes naturally to those of us from Northern Europe, North America or elsewhere in the Anglo world, where we tend to prefer things to run a bit more impersonally. The other cultural challenge is the opaque way business is conducted. Things are a lot more Levantine here. Whom you know and how you connect is as important as the law of the land. In Western Europe the post-enlightenment tradition, generally speaking, gives you the right to do what you want - unless that is, there is a specific law that says you can’t. In Southern European countries, the Middle East and much of Asia it really doesn’t work like this. Here it’s not clear what you can and can’t do and you may even be asked if you have a license to be doing whatever it is you are doing. Both approaches have their pluses and minuses. The first may be clear, but can lead to over-regulation; the second avoids this but can instead lead to a climate of confusion and corruption. Seated at my favourite local eatery in Sanur recently following an excellent lunch of oven-baked branzino ruminating on such questions I was struck by how much the operation had grown and how well run it was. After the lunch-time rush the restaurant owner Massimo Sacco joined me, while the sstaff prepared props and rehearsed songs for a performance to be p staged later in the st week. I’ve been w eating at Massimo’s ea ristorante since it ris opened in 2004 and op always enjoyed the alw food and efficient fo friendly service. Massimo comes from Ma Lecce, a baroque gem Lec on the Salento peninsula in Puglie pe (the Adriatic heel of Southern Italy), and his Sou extensive menu consists very largely of con the classic regional dishes from this area. dish Having never ventured South of Rome I’ve nevertheless been fortunate to grow up with the food of the Mezzogiorno most of my life. Until my mother re-married and I was removed much against my from the streets of London and rusticated to Dorset, I’d always accompany her on her forays to King Bomba in Soho’s Old Compton Street, a store that had kept Londoners well supplied with Italian provisions since the Risorgimento - followed by lunch, if I’d behaved, at Mario & Franco’s justopened Trattoria Terraza in Romilly Street. Living around the corner from us was my mother’s best friend from school, the writer Elizabeth David, whose book on Mediterrenean food published in 1946 brought a badly needed ray of culinary sunshine into the post WW2 world of austerity and rationing that was London 1954. Impromptu meals around the kitchen table in both houses still provide warm memories. When I got back to the London in the mid-60s the ‘Trat’ revolution was in full swing. Good, fresh reasonably-priced natural Italian cooking served informally in stylish surroundings, courtesy of Enzo Appicella, had thankfully consigned redchecked tablecloths, candles and Chianti bottles to the city’s far-flung high streets. To me the food of the Mezzogiorno is the best way to eat in the world. I like to eat and drink what I like when I like, so the hoopla, trappings and personality cults, not to mention pricetag, that can go with fine dining can get in the way. Much better to keep it simple - the produce fresh and the prices reasonable... and, run a tight ship. What more can anyone reasonably ask?

any gifted restaurateur he has that uncanny knack of seeing everything that’s going on around him and still be with you. I mention this and he laughs “yes, you have to have eyes everywhere, see everything. That’s why my staff complain and ask... how do you know that?”. He’s an interesting man with an interesting story, which goes a long way to explain his success in Bali. Born in 1968 in Lecce, his father was a chef with his own restaurant, so a love of cooking was in the blood from the start and of course he wanted to become a chef. Even in the 1980s Southern Italy was still poor and young men generally had to leave for the North or emigrate to one of the larger EU countries or the US to find well paid work. Massimo’s father convinced him that to run a successful restaurant you needed to be more than a great cook. He spent the next 5 years up at 5.00 a.m commuting the 40 km by bus to the hotel management school in Brindisi and hitching back to Lecce late afternoon. He did well there and in addition to a gruelling grounding in the hospitality business, he learned English, French German and Spanish. It was his fluency in languages that in 1987 won him a 2-year contract to work in a top 5-star hotel in the UK, the Grand Island Hotel in Ramsey, Isle of Man. From there he moved onward and upward to the Hyde Park Hotel in Knightsbridge, one of London’s great hotels. Massimo loved his time in London, played hard and worked hard. From 1989 to 1992 he worked in Germany at the famed Krone Hotel the heart of the Rheingau wine growing area. The Krone is a historic family-owned hotel established in 1496 with wine cellars that extended for miles under the town. The hotel closed down for the winter months, giving Massimo the opportunity to work in the vineyards. Having mastered the intricacies of the hotel trade Massimo felt the need to broaden his horizons and travel the world. What better way than to join the world’s top cruise line and in 1992 he signed on with Cunard with their round-the-world cruises from home port Miami aboard the Vistafjord carrying 700 passengers served by 380 staff. He was quickly promoted to managing the main dining room as well as two cafes. In 1994 he left Cunard to join the Silver Sea Group, an Italian cruise line which had just launched their state-of-the-art and even more luxurious Silver Cloud carrying just under 300 passengers with 220 staff attending to their every need at US$1,000 per day. Massimo came to Bali as a result of a meeting with a wealthy Jakartan businessman on board the Silver Cloud, who had been impressed with how Massimo handled himself and invited him to visit Bali in between cruises. As a result he stayed on to open what became Bali’s first gelato operation located at Benoa harbour in 1986. By 1998 he was ready for something more ambitious and moved to Kuta where he helped set up and run Papa’s in the Hotel Alam Kulkul, which quickly established itself as Bali’s most popular Italian eatery. It was in Kuta at this time that Massimo met his wife with whom he has two daughters, Jasmine and Jessica now 17 and 14 respectively. The girls are currently studying at the Ghandi School in Renon and the eldest Jasmine, is preparing herself to study at university in England reading English literature. Jessica shares her dad’s love of food an she may go on to hotel school in Lausanne. Sadly the marriage did not last and the couple divorced although the family remain very close. “It was hard for her. I was working very hard and she hardly ever saw me”, Massino murmers gently. In part, this was the reason for his move to Sanur 2001 to run the Village Restaurant for the Santrian Group, which was an intense experience, he remembers. In 2004 the time was right and Massimo ready for his big move. He took on large premises at the Western end of Jalan Tamblingan, just where it turns into Jl. Danau Poso, and established Il Ristorante Massimo and has never looked back.

Talking with Massimo one is struck by his upbeat style and unfailing friendliness, even when he is clearly very busy. Like

Massimo’s magic act is well worth catching and he usually performs during the Christmas/New Year period. Part of the spirit of the place and the staff is the feeling of how they all help and pitch-in whether with the restaurant work or in putting on a show. Today his restaurant business is a considerable operation. As well as serving food and running a very successful gelato business he makes his own pasta, breads, his own mozzarella plus five other local Pugliese cheeses, as well as importing a wonderful extra virgin olive oil from the region and buying real Italian parmesan cheese by the round. Lately he has greatly expanded his delicious home made dessert and patisserie section. The restaurant now employs some 120 Balinese, 80% of them women. His head chef is a woman and her two lieutenants running the restaurant and the office admin are both women also. I ask him how he does it, the secrets of how he manages it all so well? “First, it is not a business to me”, he says. “You have to love what you do. Next, everything I do is here. I’ve been asked to set up outside operations but I won’t do it. I can only operate e like a family and you c a n ’ t franchise f a m i l y. Everyone here works hard and helps each o t h e r. I f something is wrong orr there’s a problem they y come to me with it and it works well because they know I am totally committed to them and what we are doing here. I look after their interests and security, pay their taxes and medical cover. When we need new staff they’re the ones who find the people and handle it if it doesn’t work out. Then there’s training. That’s vital. I do it from scratch with everyone. We have an hour-long training on a subject every day after lunch at 3.00 pm.” You are also a man on a mission, I remark, to promote the best of Italian regional cooking and in the evening you wear a chef’s uniform with the insignia of the ICWA (Association for Italian Cuisine Worldwide). “Yes, as I say, you have to love what you do and be true to that. That means keeping it simple, keeping the food real and authentic - but simple does not mean that it’s easy or that anyone can do it.”

If it sounds simple, of course it’s not... and that’s why such places when you find them are to be treasured. When it comes to running a tight ship with all the necessary qualities I fast forward to Il Pastaio, opened by Giacomino Drago on Canyon Drive in LA in 1994. A bustling restaurant, supremely well run and the food spot on. I would go there for a late lunch so had no problem getting a table. Drago was from Sicily, so were his waiters. Their work was amazingly deft. Like professional gun slingers they were, jetting in and out of LA on 3-month tours from Sicily.

Silvan - among others, I’m intrigued and ask what that was about? It turns out that among his many talents Massimo is an accomplished magician. He started when he was 16 at school in a show put on to raise funds for a class visit to Barcelona. He sped-read Silvan’s book and his mother made a suit with the hidden pockets. It was a great success. “We had to “W release the re pigeons in p the school th grounds afterward and within an the year there was a the ock of them. flo The mess was terrible”, wa he adds. He went on the It Italian Magic Club Bologna and kept tto study t d magic i att th li M i Cl b iin B l on expanding his craft ever since. It’s all illusion, there’s nothing supernatural about it. “In fact when a magician claims to have supernatural powers we make a point of showing the trick of how it’s done”, he says.

We wrap things up as Massimo is called away by one of his female lieutenants and I depart happy in the knowledge that there will always be at least one place in my hometown where I can get good homemade Italian food in a restaurant that just gets better and better and full of pleasant surprises.

At this moment one of the senior staff approach the table and asks him a question, something about a magic show. Having noticed posters on the walls for the famous Italian magician

Festival Fun Days are Back at Finns It’s baaaaaccckk! After a little hiatus throughout the long summer break, it’s back to school and back to the business of fun at Finns Recreation Club with the second of their Food and Wine Festivals. Free for everyone to attend it promises lashings of family flavoured fun where you can get your fill of food, free entertainment, liquid refreshments and retail therapy all in the one place on Friday September 1st from 3pm. An hilarious hybrid, the game appears to be a crossbreed creation of billiards, bumper cars and football and is seriously funny to see. Players’ upper bodies are encased in

an inflated, ring shaped orb with only their lower limbs free to move. Zorbers form two teams and the concept of the game is much the same as soccer with a lot of bouncy contact! One of the best things about Zorb Soccer ( Snookball if you prefer to call it), other than side splitting fun, is that you are protected from sharp elbows and hard surfaces by one huge air filled floatie! Cool off after your Zorb Soccer session with a few runs down the rides at Splash, however you’ll have to leave your Zorb ‘floatie’ behind as they’re NOT permitted on the slides, (as entertaining as that might be!) SANUR’S BEST MASSAGES Each year I seek out the best places to get a really good massage in Sanur at reasonable prices that are clean and attractive. I also look for places that I haven’t been to before and found some great choices for this year. What to look for in a good spa: • Clean • Nice ambiance • Friendly staff that are well groomed • Use good products • Staff are well trained • Treatment rooms are comfortable Leha-Leha Spa has a lovely atmosphere with bamboo trimmings, giving it a fresh and natural look. Despite being in the early afternoon, the spa was quite busy. I received a warm friendly welcome and sat down in the charming lounge. While I was waiting sipping on some chilled lemongrass tea and refreshing myself with a cold towel I chatted with another guest who told me that her whole family often come here. That sounded promising. Leha-Leha Spa is the concept of Ida Bagus Made Manuaba (Gusde) who worked in Dubai for a decade for Fairmont and Park Hyatt Hotels and was known for his “magic touch” in treating international guests. He personally hand-picked and trained all of the staff to ensure that all his customers are guaranteed a fabulous therapy who will leave the spa feeling relaxed, renewed and revived.

While lying face up Ayu asked if I’d like my stomach massaged. Yes please. The massage culminated with a relaxing neck, face and head massage. She then used another warm towel to wipe the oil from my arms and legs. By this point I was in a state of bliss. Other massages are: Chantara Essence massage, Traditional Eastern, Restorative Back and Warm Stone. Chantara Wellness & Spa Jalan Danau Poso 104, Sanur. T: 361-4490440/ 8113992015. E: bali@chantaraspa.com W: www.chantaraspa.com. My final choice for Sanur is The Nest Beachside Spa located at the south end of Sanur. This trendy spa has become so popular that they have added on another block of rooms. It was very pleasant sitting in front of the spa gazing at the ocean with a multitude of colourful boats while I waited for my therapist. I had booked The Nest Signature Massage for 90 minutes. This is a unique combination of Thai massage and Balinese. Entering one of the newest rooms, everything was so clean and fresh. After undressing I laid face up on the large massage bed. Dessy gently placed an eye cover over my eyes and then started with stretches on my feet and legs. Images of Thailand flashed through my mind as the familiar pressing and stretching loosened up my legs and joints. Then she began work on my arms by pressing and stretching them. With loose limbs she added oil to my skin continuing with Balinese massage with deep tissue movements.

C/He/G-15 Feb. 17

A smiling therapist approached me and asked me to accompany her to the treatment room, which was upstairs. It was a tastefully arranged room with a shower which all treatment rooms have. She showed me a tray with a sarong and asked me to change and be seated on a stool behind a footbath bowl. After a pleasant foot bath and mini foot massage she asked me to lie face down. I was having the 90 minute Balinese massage. Her strokes were firm offering deep tissue relief for tight muscles in my shoulders. Asking about her pressure which was good she carried on. She was very thorough in her strokes as she methodically worked around my body. She politely asked if I’d like my stomach massaged. After washing her hands she gave me a soothing face and head massage for the finale. At the end of the massage I was completely relaxed. She asked if I’d like to take a shower but I opted for keeping the oil on to nourish my skin. After dressing and returning downstairs I had a steaming pot of ginger tea awaiting me. Leha-Leha Spa also offers Neck, Shoulder and Back massage, Deep Relaxation Full Body, De-stress Muscle Full Body and Yogi Lomi Massage. Jl. Sukamata No. 5, Sanur. T: 8113995510 / 87860188420 W: www.balilehaleha.com E: info@balilehaleha.com New in Sanur is Chantara Wellness & Spa. Inspired by the Thai language “Chan” means moon and “Tara” means water in a cycle that ebbs and flows with the cycles of life. Inspired by time honoured Asian beauty and health treatment using organic and all n a t u r a l botanical and aromatherapy ingrediants. With four spacious treatment rooms outfitted in wood, accented with shades of ruby and burgundy, “regal” is the word that came to mind upon entering my treatment room to experience the Deep Tissue Signature massage for 90 minutes. After donning a sarong, Ayu commenced my treatment with a footbath ritual then placed plush slippers on my feet. Lying comfortably face down she began by pressing on the soles of my feet and then methodically worked her way up one leg. Eventually she reached my back where she spent considerable time working out the knots in the muscles of my shoulders. I was aware that the staff had been professionally trained and was expecting great things. Eventually I was so relaxed that I started to drift off to sleep, a rare event for me. When she finished with the back she used a warm towel to remove the excess oil.

C/He/I-01 Feb 17

When the front of my body was limp as a noodle she asked me turn over and repeated Thai movements on the back of my legs with “cobra” stretches and then used thumb pressure points going up and down along my spine. After my “yoga exercise” she added oil to my skin, working deeply into the muscles in my back and shoulders. At one point she placed a few warm sand compresses along my spine as she continued working on my legs. Completely relaxed I was asked to turn over face up again. Now she worked on my neck, face and head. For the grand finale she placed a small Tibetan bowl under my rib cage and tapped it sending vibrations through my inner body to tone the organs. As she stirred the stick around the bowl the pleasant sound of the sacred bowl sent more vibrations through my body. Lovely way to finish. Also on the menu are: Balinese Massage with Sand Compress, Deep Tissue, Serenity Candle massage, Wa r m S t o n e , Therapeutic and Lymphatic D r a i n a g e massage. The Nest Beachfront off Jl. Survival Stories by Land and by Sea Among the scores of memoirs written by military men describing their wartime survival stories and escapes from POW camps, two books published by Monsoon Books (www.monsoonbooks.co.uk) stand out. These true accounts were written in simple words without literary embroidery by servicemen who fought the Japanese during the invasion of Singapore in WW II. One is an escape-or-die story through Jap-infested jungle and the other a harrowing tale of suffering and death on the open sea.

You’ll Die in Singapore by Charles McCormac You’ll Die in Singapore chronicles the author ’s escape along with group of 16 other prisoners who broke out of the Pasir Panjang Japanese POW camp in Singapore shortly after the Japanese occupation of the island in 1942. Weakened by hunger, thirst and ill-treatment, only two survived an epic fivemonth, 2000-mile overland trek through the jungles of Indonesia to safety in Australia. It is not only a personal account but also an historical record of war-time Malaya, Singapore and Indonesia under brutal occupation. Instead of waiting for an inevitable death, a small work gang of co-conspirators, armed only with crude weapons and stolen bayonets, overpowered their guards and escaped through rubber plantations to the northwest coast of Singapore Island. The book’s only illustration is a map of the escapees’ zigzagging land route in the dead of night. Crossing the Melaka Strait, they were strafed by Japanese fighters and then picked up by a Royal Netherlands seaplane that dropped them off on the mudflats of east Sumatra. The small group headed towards the deep, dark purple haze of the Bukit Barisan Range of mountains. Feverish and delirious from dysentery and malaria, 1800 miles of inhospitable rainforest and thousands of Japanese troops lay between them and Australia. One terrible stretch of jungle took them 13 days to cross, with danger at every turn as they encountered oxcarts, natives in loincloths, huge slow moving rivers and narrowly avoiding Japanese patrols. They ate berries, leaves, bamboo shoots, wild acidy pineapples, frogs, lizards, flying foxes. They tapped palm trees for the pale greenish liquid inside and devoured jelly-like reddish pulps of wiggly white insects under logs. With no compass or map, they had only their own wits and the goodwill of villagers to rely on. From one moment to the next, you never knew if they would be betrayed, ambushed or suddenly fall victim to natural hazards like snakes and wild animals. They hid under suffocating hot tarpaulins on cargo trucks alongside stinking petrol, fruit and coconuts. They fell in with a guerilla band under the leadership of a bitter, scar faced Dutch commander. Finally, the two remaining filthy, bearded men boarded a fishing boat out to sea where they rendezvoused with an Australian flying boat and freedom. The author himself is the book’s most vivid and intriguing character – tough and brazen, yet compassionate and philosophical. Born in England in 1915, McCormac grew up in Malaya where he learned to speak Malay, Chinese, Tamil and Japanese. He served in the RAF as a wireless operator and air-gunner. He endured unimaginably vicious bouts of torture by sword, fists and rifle butts. After the war, he was awarded the Distinguished Conduct Medal. As is the case with many hidden histories, self-published obscurely or published by small publishers, this memoir has been undervalued and under-publicized. One of the best wartime adventure memoirs, You’ll Die in Singapore is a taut, faced-paced and amazing story of hardship and endurance told with an authentic voice and an economy of words. You’ll Die in Singapore by Charles McCormac, Monsoon Books 2005, ISBN 978-981-053-0150, paperback, 224 pages.

The Boat by Walter Gibson The Boat is the most riveting story of the mental, moral and physical disintegration of human beings under extreme pressure that I have ever read. It’s a compelling tale of survival and hopelessness, told with a relentless pace and a blunt and clipped writing style of blood-curdling power. C/BT/G-15 March 17

Though one is tempted to characterize The Boat as the oceangoing counterpart of You’ll Die in Singapore, I found The Boat more believable and held me more irresistibly in its thrall. It’s a leaner story with very little dialog. You’ll Die in Singapore at times seems fictionalized, reconstructed from memory and the dialog contrived after the fact to fit the scenes. The Boat brings a terrifying moment out of time down to a visceral, personal level so the reader can taste and feel the desperation at close proximity. The narrative shows the best and worst of human behavior under privation, weakness and fear when facing the ultimate reality – one’s own death. Reading this book is like viewing a horror movie in your mind as each individual death is played out one by one. The monthlong experience seared into the writer’s mind, he would hear the creaking sway of the boat in his dreams for decades to come. On March 1st, 1942, the Dutch ship Rooseboom was crowded with 500 people being evacuated fro\m Malaya when it was attacked by a Japanese submarine off the coast of Sumatra. The torpedo destroyed two lifeboats and a third was wrecked as it was lowered in panic. Built for only 38 people, the initial number of occupants was 80 people plus another 50 who clung to the side. Half of them were raw 19-20-year British infantry troops, the first to crack.

This space could be yours !

We see how the mind goes before the body. The arch enemy onboard the life boat was the merciless sun. The second most virulent enemy - worse than the hunger - was thirst. There are unforgettable scenes of men going insane, hallucinating, vanishing in the night; of murders, suicides and cannibalism; of a violent storm carrying away clingers and other tragic and heartbreaking ways that survivors met their ignominious end. After drifting for more than 1000 miles, the boat with its remaining three occupants washes up on a reef off Sipora, one of the Mentawai Islands, 60 miles off the coast of north Sumatra and 100 miles from Padang where the ill-fated Rooseboom had set sail. The survivors recover in a fishing village for six weeks until the Japanese arrived to carried them off to a prison camp in Padang where the narrator is subjected to more interrogation and torture. Gibson led a grim existence for two more years until he was liberated by the Allies in August 1945.

This diary of death and resourcefulness in the face of adversity is a litany of courage, betrayal, suffering, depravity and self-sacrifice all in one. The pace of the story is unrelenting, tense and stark with no words to spare. But what is perhaps the most unsettling about this gruesome tale is that each one of the characters - whether they be hero, madman, murderer or saint – if thrown into the same sickening circumstances- are you and me. SOCIAL IMPAKT : A journey through Indonesia’s remote areas with a mission in mind, improving access to clean water. • Crowdfunding Campaign For Clean Drinking Water in Rural Bali place ? I came across the alarming figures of children deaths caused by drinking unsafe water. In Indonesia alone, 20,000 children below 5 years old die every year from waterborne diseases. Diarrhea is the second cause of infant mortality in the world. My adventure started at this moment, I decided to focus on water. In 2014, inspired by this trip, I decided to create Social Impakt, a social business whose mission is to improve access to clean water in remote communities in Indonesia by supplying an affordable and eco-friendly water filtration technology. Water is life and access to clean water is a human right! It is estimated that in Indonesia 34 million people out of 260 million people - that is 13% of the total- do not have access to clean drinking water. That is why the company Social Impakt created by Jeroen is preparing a crowdfunding campaign that will be launched on September 5th for 30 days and which aims to raise 60,000 euros to finance the purchase of 2,000 water filters for 3 villages and 25 schools in the area of Sidemen in East Bali. Back in 2011, I was Vice President for Europe, Middle East, and Africa for a British corporation, based in Dublin, led a business of 260 million USD with 7 factories and 800 employees, traveling always more. Suddenly I experienced a shift in me. I realized that I was helping companies making money, but I was not helping people. I realized there was a better way to use my business skills. I quit my job and I landed in Indonesia for some holidays, without exactly knowing what would be the next step. But with only one idea in mind, how could I help to make this world a better

impacted the lives of more than 16,000 people. We have also set up a network of 30 filter resellers in the villages, creating new income opportunities. Our crowdfunding campaign, if successful, will improve access to clean water in east Bali and that means improved health, improved income, reduced CO2 emissions and reduced plastic bottle use in these communities. It will positively impact 15,000 people. Do not hesitate to donate and share it to the world, it is for a good cause.

I met Mangku, to whom I owe a lot of my success today. He is my brother, my translator, my gateway to this new world. Over an 18 months period, Mangku and I were traveling all over east Bali with our car filled with water filters. We met more than 150 village leaders and visited more than 500 schools to introduce our water filter. To date, we have already positively

children going on to higher education. The school urgently requires funding for proper functioning new toilets and shower facilities, plus repairs and improvements to many basic facilities. Major work is also required to the septic tank, to be replaced with a 3 tiered system with a waste garden. We will also repair a heavily damaged basketball court. Our club is very much looking forward to our involvement and bringing smiles to the children’s faces.

Welcome to the Rotary Club Bali Canggu Helping Your Community. Have you considered getting involved in social projects in Bali but don’t know where to begin? The members of the Rotary Club Bali Canggu are a group of like minded individuals, both locals and westerners, who come together to help our community. We are currently looking for new members to to join our team, so come along and join our Tuesday fortnightly meetings at the Hotel Tugu Bali, Jalan Pantai Batu Bolong, Canggu Beach. Th The Rotary Club Bali C Canggu is a young, active an and vibrant club now en entering our 6th year with a pa passion to serve our local co community in Bali. Rotarians ma a real difference. make

and together with our friends at Rotary Club of Bali Taman, we taught the local residents how to compost domestic food waste and even sell the resulting compost, thus reducing the huge amount of waste going to landfill every week. A very important issue on this small island! Last year we had a great opportunity to work together with Wake Water on the ‘Water Tank and Sanitation Project’ in Kubu, Karangasem in the north-east of Bali. In this village people suffer from a chronic shortage of water during the dry season and they all get very sick from drinking dirty water, especially the children. Our project was to install 26 water tanks with each tank able to hold 3,400 litres of of drinking water collected by natural rainfall. This then provides enough to last the families through the dry season. Such a much needed and essential resource to sustain life and ease suffering. A project we were very proud of.

The Rotary motto is “Service Abo Above Self”. Our club revolves around 2 them themes – Fellowship and Proj Projects. Projects come in all sh shapes and sizes. One of our earlier very successful projects was a School Waste Management Program working together with Eco Bali where we educated 11 Elementary Schools in Canggu on how to reduce, reuse and recycle waste. Teaching the children the correct techniques gives them the opportunity to put instructions into practice for a successful outcome. Environmental projects are very important to us. We were also able to launch an organic composting project,

Currently we are involved in a new project taking place at the Salam Orphanage in Tabanan. This project is between the Rotary Club Bali Canggu and the Rotary Club of Wauchope in Australia. As the International partners we act as local coordinator and offer on ground assistance required. The home is for children from very poor homes whose families simply can’t afford to feed and clothe them. It offers them very basic dormitory style sleeping arrangements with basic food consisting mainly of rice and fish. The education however is quite good with some

In 2013 the Rotaract Club Bali Canggu (sponsored by Rotary Club Bali Canggu) was founded. Rotaract is for the younger men and women aged between 18-30. We encourage young people to join to nurture leadership skills and become more aware and responsible members of the community. Their projects are specifically chosen for community service such as visiting orphanages, interacting with young people and introducing special guests to share knowledge and skills. For further information please visit https://www.facebook.com/ract. canggu/ Being a Rotarian is about not only having a social and moral conscience, but being prepared to act on it. When you join forces with other like minded people with the same perspective, you can achieve things together that would not otherwise be possible. Well meaning individuals are able to really make a difference and change people’s lives for the better. We currently have 25 members (14 men and 11 women) of all ages and nationalities and encourage you to come along and join in our inspiring meetings. The Rotary Club Bali Canggu meets fortnightly, the first and third Tuesday of each month at 18:00 (6:00pm). Our meeting location is the very beautiful and historic Hotel Tugu at the end of Jalan Batu Bolong in Canggu and well worth the visit, even if just to take a look around at this amazing building. You will learn about our club projects, enjoy listening to one of our many guest speakers, meet visiting Rotarians, then sit back and enjoy a cold beer or two and have a social chat with everyone. For any further information please contact the club secretary Susan Grant grantsusan58@gmail.com Hope to see you soon! 31 ALL EXPATS LIKELY TO BE AFFECTED BY CRS As little as a year ago no-one would have thought this possible but it is now a fact that most countries in the world have agreed to the automatic exchange of tax and financial information on individuals. The global agreement that has brought it about is known as the Common Reporting Standard (CRS). Its purpose is to combat tax evasion which has long been a global problem. It followed a similar process called FATCA established by the United States to more closely monitor the financial affairs of US citizens abroad but CRS will have a much wider global effect. Additional pressure to implement CRS resulted from the exposure of the now notorious ‘Panama Papers’ that revealed thousands of names of individuals, including many famous ones, who had secretly hidden their wealth in Panama. Even if you live a quiet life in a remote part of Bali it is likely that some aspect of the international agreement will affect you at some point in time. Indonesians who hold assets outside the country will also be affected. In fact even holding a local bank account now means that the tax authorities will have access to your data on an annual basis as well as on request. The final hurdle to put this into law was achieved with the passing of a financial disclosure law in the House of Representatives just a few weeks before the publication of this article. Undoubtedly CRS was the driving force that made this possible. It is a major coup for the country as it should expand the very low tax base and increase revenue for the benefit of all. How CRS has evolved In 2014 47 countries agreed to signing an agreement that allowed the automatic exchange of information (AEOI). That number has now increased to over 100 and implementation is already starting this year. Under the agreement each participating country will annually automatically exchange with other countries the below information: 1. Name, address, Taxpayer Identification Number (TIN) and date and place of birth of each Reportable Person. 2. Account number 3. Name and identifying number of the reporting financial institution; 4. Account balance or value as of the end of the relevant calendar year or at its closure, if the account was closed. This is why you are likely to have to confirm your TIN and provide proof of identity and residential address in respect of any application for a bank account or financial product as well as a withdrawal from or surrender of an investment. Indonesia and Singapore now included On July 27 the House of Representatives in Indonesia passed a Regulation in Lieu of Law (Perppu) allowing the tax office to legally chase Indonesian taxpayers holding their wealth overseas. Meanwhile, the Ministry of Finance in Singapore also announced that it would engage in the Automatic Exchange of Information (AEOI) with Indonesia. Something the Indonesian government had been seeking for decades. The offshore centres favoured by many expats, namely the Isle of Man, Jersey and Guernsey have all committed to start reporting this year. Indonesia and Singapore will start reporting next year. Even Panama, which gained notoriety for its thousands of hidden accounts, has signed the agreement. How will CRS affect you? If you have opened or closed an account or conducted any significant financial transaction recently you will have noticed that institutions have started to ask for more than the usual proof of identity and residential address. There is now an additional form requiring you to declare the countries in which you are paying tax. They will ask for a Tax Identification Number (TIN) so this is a piece of information you will always need to have at hand. For taxpayers in Indonesia the number is the one we have always known as an NPWP. If you pay tax in the US your Social Security number serves as the TIN and

in the UK it is the National Insurance Number. If you always have the above information to hand then filling in the new forms should not be a problem. But what if you do not have a TIN, perhaps because you are retired or a housewife etc.? It is not a problem but you have to state a reason and may be pressed for more information. C/Bs/I-26 Oct 16

Banks now removing welcome mats CRS has brought about other changes as financial institutions count the cost of compliance. Banks still want your business; without it they would be out of business themselves. But they do not welcome the additional burden and potential hassle of reporting on accounts which are held by people not resident in the same country as the account. After all, they don’t get paid extra for all the work that is involved. So something is happening that is similar to the consequence of FATCA when many institutions politely asked expatriate US nationals to take their business elsewhere. It is now more difficult for expats to open accounts in countries other than the one they reside in, including their home country. Some banks are obliging long time customers to close their accounts if they no longer live in their home country.

C/BS/I-12 April 17

If You Have a Problem with.....

Potential freezing of accounts There is an even worse scenario now where banks are freezing accounts if they are not satisfied with the compliance information provided to them or have suspicions about the source of funds. This is to protect themselves against potential breaches of antimoney laundering regulations which have already cost erring banks billions of dollars in penalties. The major banks have been among the worst offenders so we can expect closer scrutiny from them in the future. Fortunately it is still possible to open an account with a bank in one of the traditional offshore jurisdictions such as the Isle of Man or Jersey as they cater specifically to the international expat community. But in the new environment of disclosure expect a fairly thorough application process. I have known several cases where applicants have abandoned their applications when frustrated at excessive probing for further information only to come back for a second shot when their bank in their home country closes their accounts. Where do we go from here? It is likely that we can expect more compliance rather than less, but we should take some comfort in the fact that it is for the common good. Countries like Indonesia are going to see a massive increase in income from taxes and will hopefully see the consequential benefits in improved infrastructure as well as health and education. The price we have to pay is more paperwork and more inconvenience but there is no escape (other than opting out of society) so the best strategy is to get well organised in terms of all the compliance requirements of ID, proof of residential address and now one more item, your TIN. Have these accessible at all times and form-filling will be plain sailing.

Say What? Question: I’ve been seeing this great guy for about 6 months. He’s sweet, smart, and ridiculously generous with his time and attention, and I like him a lot. All this makes me feel terrible about telling him to shut up about the angst he feels about his friend who’s moving back to her home country soon. The two of them have been working together for close to a year, and even though she turned him down when he asked her out on a date when they first met, they have remained friends. In the interests of being upfront and honest when I started dating him, he told me the whole story. Now, he still seems to have some lingering feelings for her – especially since she’s leaving. At this point, I’m tired of being supportive and listening to him go on about how much he’s going to miss her, and how he feels as if her leaving is a bigger deal to him than it is to her. It grates on me to hear about his issues with his former crush. Is there a non-bitchy way I can call him out on this and help him move on? Dr. ZZ: The good news is you’ve got it made over his old crush. Number one, she’s leaving. Number two, the situation is bound to improve with time. In terms of confronting your boyfriend, you’ll do best to be compassionate and direct. Obviously, he is free to chew over his feelings for her and to contemplate grand gestures like taking her out to dinner one last time. By the same token, you are free to tell him that you have compassion for what he is feeling and want him to process it in whatever way he needs. But it’s also perfectly okay to ask him not to process his grief during your time together or to use you as a sounding board - that hearing about every detail makes you feel insecure and depressed. Say something like, “I know you’re really bummed that she’s leaving, and it’s bringing up a lot of complicated feelings for you. I appreciate your being so open with me about it, and I know that your intentions are good; but I also

find something to be a huge turnoff or morally unacceptable. But, if somebody judged you harshly for hooking up with a guy for a one-night stand, for example, how would that jibe with your politics? think that I’m not the right person to comfort you about this particular set of worries. Can you confide this stuff in one of your other friends, and let our time together be about us?” Question: I met a guy in a nightclub on his last night in Bali, and we hooked up. I figured it would be a one-night stand, but after having sex, we decided to keep in touch, and we have been emailing, texting, and calling each other and talking throughout the night. In one conversation, we discussed our sexual histories, and he said he hadn’t been with “too many women.” When I asked him how many, he waffled. Then, as we talked about all the different places we have traveled, it became clear that most of the countries he has visited are notorious for sex tourism, and I am the first woman he didn’t pay for sex. As a feminist, I have read and heard about girls enduring outrageous brutality at the hands of sex tourists. I loathe the demonization and dehumanization of women who work in the sex industry for a livelihood. Thinking of him as a sex tourist turns my stomach, and I wonder if what he did means he’s a bad person. Is a man who buys sex from a woman, maybe even a minor, a person whom a feminist should avoid? I could use some illumination on this. Thank you. Dr. ZZ: Everyone has a history, and we do best to approach another’s sexual past with respect and gentleness. That doesn’t mean that everything is in bounds, or that you can’t

We live in a patriarchal society, and prostitution is the world’s oldest profession for a reason. There’s no telling how many kind, smart, eminently datable men have paid for sex at some point in their lives. If the price of that experience is that they must never admit it and instead keep the experience as a filthy little secret, then we feed the duality monster that pretends there are “good” girls and “bad” girls, and that we can somehow tell the difference. Without judgment, you may want to ask him what it was like, what he experienced, and what he feels about it in retrospect. There may be things about his story that weigh on you so much that you can’t let it go, and you can’t have a relationship with him. But you don’t know that until you talk about it like adults in a way that admits the complexities of the world and of desire, and admits the agency and humanity of people who sell sex. No “Feminists Commission” is standing at attention to audit you if you see this man again. There’s just you and he and the choices you make. This is not to minimize the horrors of human trafficking and underage prostitution; it is just to suggest that it’s better to deal with truth than with speculation, and that you ask him what happened. He may have some complex feelings about it after the fact. Chances are a lot of men have paid for sex and are not honest about it. This is an opportunity to get a first hand account of what that world is like.

a festival of fresh voices, UWRF will welcome ‘the wild child of the South Korean experimental literary scene’, Han Yujoo; editor of the first English language anthology of Tibetan fiction, Tenzin Dickie; and Jhoanna Lynn B. Cruz, who wrote the Philippines’ first sole-author collection of lesbian-themed stories.

Comprising more than 150 of the world’s leading authors, artists and activists from 31 countries, the Ubud Writers & Readers Festival (UWRF) has announced its most diverse program yet, with the event – now in its 14th year – having well and truly evolved into a global hub of education, inspiration and empowerment.

From Indonesia to Iran, Canada to South Korea, the Philippines to Pakistan and dozens of countries in between, the five-day program of impassioned in-conversations, intimate literary lunches, and powerful live performances promises a world of stories, ideas and solutions at a time when amplifying diverse voices is more critical than ever. Among the leading literary luminaries are the UK’s king of crime writing, Ian Rankin, Canada’s newest literary star, Madeleine Thien, revered Indonesian journalists and novelists Seno Gumira Ajidarma and Leila S. Chudori, Malaysian minority rights activist and author, Marina Mahathir, and one of Indonesia’s most prolific and respected writers, feminist icon Nh. Dini. They’ll be joined by one of the world’s best-loved authors Jung Chang, whose family autobiography Wild Swans sold over ten million copies after being banned in China; eminent British writer, journalist and broadcaster Simon Winchester, whose bestseller Krakatoa: The Day the World Exploded has long been a firm fixture on bookshelves across the region; one of Indonesia’s favorite and most prolific poets, Joko Pinurbo; and Saroo Brierley, whose memoir was adapted into the blockbuster film Lion.

As ever, Southeast Asia’s leading journalists, writers and activists will address the region’s most pressing concerns, with the line-up including Andreas Harsono, who has covered Indonesia for Human Rights Watch since 2008; Putu Oka Sukanta, the recipient of the inaugural Herb Feith Foundation Human Rights Education Award; factory worker-turned writer and social commentator, Lijia Zhang; Founder of the Georgetown Literature Festival, Bernice Chauly; esteemed writer and journalist, Michael Vatikiotis; and Nisid Hajaria, Asia editor of Bloomberg News’ editorial page. Amid political divisions, climate change will be tackled by industry leaders including acclaimed climatologist, Tim Flannery, Head of the Climate Change Unit at the British Embassy Jakarta, Tom Owen Edmunds, and Robert Crocker, a researcher in the field of design for sustainability. As Latin America continues to make headlines, insights will be revealed by its prominent authors, poets and playwrights – Héctor Abad from Colombia, Carmen Boullosa from Mexico, Sergio Chejfec from Argentina, along with journalist and art critic Victoria Stigger and writer and artist Victor Heringer from Brazil. The power of poetry in public discourse – both written and performed – will be a strong focal point of the Festival. Illustrious English poet, playwright and novelist Simon Armitage will be joined by Balinese poet and theater director Kadek Sonia Piscayanti; one of Portugal’s foremost contemporary writers, Ana Luísa Amaral; award-winning American writer and poet based in Japan, Leza Lowitz; Singaporean poet and photographer Marc Nair; the man credited as the catalyst for Australia’s poetry slam movement, Chicagoan Miles Merril; and 2016 Australian Poetry Slam Champion, Arielle Cottingham. After Iran was guest of honor at this year’s Beijing International Book Fair, Iranian literature – rooted in one of the world’s oldest literary traditions – will be explored by its rising star, Shokoofeh Azar, and award-winning poet, playwright and literary translator, Sholeh Wolpé. Upholding its reputation as

Alternative forms of storytelling will be explored by comic artist and illustrator, and author of the first graphic novel to win the Singapore Literature Prize for fiction, Sonny Liew; comic artist Rachel Ang, Art Director of Pencilled In, a magazine championing the work of Asian-Australian writers and artists; Riziqi R. Mosmarth, Head of the Indonesian Comic Society; and Ary Wicahyana, who uses a traditional style of Balinese painting to address contemporary issues. Rocking against prejudice and smashing stereotypes, a performance by groundbreaking all-girl Indonesian Muslim metal band Voice of Baceprot will present a little-heard perspective. As Bali continues to top lists of the world’s favorite holiday destinations, travel and travel writing will be explored through the extraordinary stories of Paula Constant, who walked 12,000km through eight countries; Indonesia’s leading travel writer Trinity; and Swedish writer Per Andersson, author of The Amazing Story of the Man Who Cycled from India to Europe for Love. Foodies will be sated by the insights of lifetime food traveler Joanna Savill and Britain’s leading expert on Chinese cuisine, Fuchsia Dunlop. They’ll be joined by Guardian Australia senior writer Brigid Delaney, whose recently released Wellmania takes a wry look at the global wellness industry. The Festival continues to celebrate Indonesia’s burgeoning film industry with one of this year’s most anticipated releases, Istirihatlah Kata-kata (Solo, Solitude), directed by Yosep Anggi Noen, and hUSh, the latest film from one of Indonesia’s most controversial writers and filmmakers, Djenar Maesa Ayu. “With the number of nations represented at this year’s Festival, it’s clear why previous UWRF speaker Dr Anita Heiss called it ‘the most multicultural, political, and diverse event on the literary calendar’,” commented Founder & Director Janet DeNeefe. Local News A seven-month-old girl diagnosed with severe pneumonia is fighting for life in a Bali hospital Baby Almeera, from Perth, was rushed to hospital on Wednesday with a high fever and now she is unable to breath on her own. The pneumonia has caused inflammation around her heart and possibly will need to be monitored with blood transfusions the rest of her life. Her father, Daniel, and Indonesian mother Sonia, who live in Bali, were devastated to find her medical expenses were not covered under their insurance. The baby girl’s parents are also facing huge costs to transport their daughter from Bali back to Perth. ‘She is unable to breath without oxygen and she stopped breathing three times in one night,’ the GoFundMe page set up for her states. ‘She has under gone a blood transfusion and they are doing further tests to investigate if she has a genetic blood disorder called Beta Thalassemia, which requires a specialist consultant.’ If Almeera needs testing and further medical help they will need to travel to Australia for the assistance which will put her family under immense financial strain. The page urges donations to assist her parents, who run a bar and grill in Bali, as they do their best to help their daughter. Any left over funds will be donated to the Princess Margaret Hospital for Children in Perth. [Daily Mail Australia August 16, 2017]

Bali prison escapee Shaun Davidson has taunted the authorities with another provocative Facebook post

Bali Chief of Police urges execution on site of policemen found involved in narcotics trade

Shaun Edward Davidson, 33, broke out Bali’s notorious Kerobokan prison on June 20 through a tunnel burrowed underneath the jail walls and has been on the run from authorities since. Davidson, from Perth, has amassed a cult following on Facebook since his escape, where he taunts the police about his fugitive lifestyle. ‘Run run as fast as you can, you can’t catch me I’m the gingerbread man,’ he posted on Tuesday. The post was met with an outpouring of support from his more than 6,000 followers. ‘Keep ‘em guessing mate,’ one man said. ‘Please don’t get caught, I am your big fan,’ another said.

NusaBali reports that Bali’s Provincial Chief of Police, Inspector General Petrus Golose has double-downed on earlier calls to fire and prosecute policeman found guilty of any illicit involvement with narcotic and is now urging that policeman involved in the use or trade of drugs be shot at the scene of the crime.

Davidson tunnelled out of the overcrowded Bali prison with three other inmates in June. Two escapees were caught within days, while Davidson and another man remain on the run. Since his escape Davidson has continued to taunt the police with bizarre and provocative Facebook posts. Davidson also created his own ‘wanted’ posters offering a ‘huge reward’ award for his capture. In the posters, which were met with a huge amount of support from his followers, he called himself a ‘gangsta, hustler, outlaw, ladies’ man and hide and seek champion’. Davidson has also made a series of posts on Facebook claiming to be in various exotic locations across the globe. ‘Living the dream,’ he wrote in June, claiming to be in Amsterdam. He also went on a bizarre rant in early July. ‘I’m a real life action movie star, nah I’m just normal b, there ain’t no way a penitentiary is every holding me from Oz to Bali, Amsterdam to Germany, you better believe it when I say my life is no lie. I’m sipping on this cocktail on the beaches of Dubai [sic],’ he said. Balinese authorities said in July they were ‘close’ to finding the fugitive. After the announcement, Davidson messaged Interpol, the world’s largest police organisation, asking them how close they really were to catching him. ‘How how’s it going, just wondering, when you say close, how close are you really?’ he wrote. Davidson claimed he was not trying to taunt police with his Facebook activity, instead just ‘having some fun and a laugh’ with his life. ‘I’m living my life just trying to make the best out of a bad situation,’ he said. [Daily Mail Australia August 15, 2017] Stranded Ebony Silva to be granted Australian passport after five-year Bali fight Family and friends of Ebony Silva have long pleaded for government support to bring the nine-year-old back to Australia. But immigration officials had refused to renew the youngster’s passport without the signature of her estranged Indonesian mother. Her mother had taken Ebony’s original Australian passport and temporarily moved to Norway. She later returned but said she would only sign the renewal application if she was given $500,000. The Administrative Appeals Tribunal ruled yesterday that Ebony was “effectively trapped” in Indonesia and that she should be issued with a passport. Dad Peter Silva said he hoped to receive Ebony’s passport within the next fortnight. “The day after we get the passport we will get on the plane and come home,” Mr Silva said. “Ebony wants to see snow. It has taken five and half years to get this done. I’m over the moon.” Administrative Appeals Tribunal senior member Egon Fice said the passport would allow Ebony “freedom of movement, to which she has a right”. He added: “I find that Ebony’s psychological and possibly physical welfare would be adversely affected if she were not permitted to return to Australia”. Mr Silva said the years of uncertainty had been “torture” for his family. He, his mother and prominent social worker Les Twenty had all lobbied the government and Foreign Minister Julie Bishop for help. But Mr Silva said their pleas for help had gone unanswered. “This hasn’t been an Indonesian problem, this has been an Australian problem,” he said. “It’s been very unfair.” Mr Twentyman, who heads the Les Twenty Foundation, said he was brought to tears by the news Ebony would be issued a passport. “It’s just unbelievable,” he said. “Over the years, I have at times felt the pain of her wonderful grandparents. But it’s finally happened.” Mr Silva said he was in the process of applying for Australian citizenship for his youngest son, Zak Agung, who was born in Bali. He said the family would fly home to Australia, but would return to live in Bali until the children were high school age. [Herald Sun August 18, 2017] Former Afghan refugee, female pilot landing in Bali on solo flight around the world Afghan-American pilot Shaesta Waiz is due to land in Bali on Tuesday afternoon, one destination of many during her solo world tour. The 29-year-old, piloting a Beechcraft Bonanza A36, will be coming in from Singapore’s Seletar Airport, which was her 14th of 34 stops in at least 18 different countries. Waiz is scheduled to land in Bali’s Ngurah Rai International Airport at 12:35pm and is supposed to be greeted by officials from relevant agencies, including Airnav Bali, Pertamina, and Biomantara, according to Uzone. After being greeted with a welcoming ceremony, Naiz is expected to head over to Kuta, where she is scheduled to stay three days, before setting off for her next stop, Darwin. Waiz, an engineering graduate, has said her 90-day solo journey around the world is to inspire the next generation of STEM & aviation professionals and has conducted multiple outreach events at each of her stops. She kicked off her journey, which she calls the “Dreams Soar Mission,” in Daytona, Florida in July and will travel some 5,800km before circling around back to Florida in August. “Dreams are universal and don’t belong to just a certain group of people. So attempt every dream like they belong to you because they do,” says Waiz. Waiz’s family came over the US in 1987 at the end of the Soviet War in Afghanistan. Her dedication to flying has seen her become the youngest certified civilian pilot from Afghanistan. [Coconuts Bali August 15, 2017] South African pair successfully evacuated from Bali’s Nusa Penida after clinging to islet Two South African tourists who were dragged out by intense currents at Bail’s Nusa Penida island were successfully evacuated on Wednesday morning after being stuck on an islet for nearly 20 hours. Just a short boat ride away from Bali, Nusa Penida is a smaller, less-developed island that is becoming an increasingly popular destination for travelers. Both South Africans, identified in reports as Daniel Anderson, 21, and Devin Grey, 39, are said to be in stable condition but covered in external wounds. The two reportedly went out spearfishing yesterday afternoon at Penida’s Atuh Beach around 3pm with another South African friend, Sean Sutton, 22, when they apparently got taken by surprise and dragged out to sea. While Sutton managed to swim back and make it to the beach on the mainland, the other two got stuck out at a rocky islet. After hours of trying to reach the pair, the National Search and Rescue Agency (Basarnas) was finally able to evacuate them at 10am this morning. “We launched a search for the victims. At around 6pm, two of the victims were seen from the cliff edge of one of the islands around Atuh Beach. At that moment the condition of the tide was still low. The location of the island is difficult to reach,” Nusa Penida Police Chief Suastika told Tribun Bali on Wednesday. It’s understood that the three tourists had been camping out for the past three weeks around Atuh Beach, local residents told Tribun Bali. [Coconuts Bali August 9, 2017]

Inspector General Golose issued his stern warning at a ceremony destroying confiscated illegal alcohol and drugs at Bali Police Headquarters on Tuesday, August 15, 2017. In front of tens of the police personnel and guests, Bali’s top policeman forcefully restated his commitment in fighting narcotics. Golose said: “It is no longer a secret that members of the police are involved in narcotics. If there is a member of the police force involved in drugs I ask that they just be shot. Are we prepared to do this?” Prior to being appointed the Head of the Bali Provincial Police, Golose served as the Head of the National Terrorism Mitigation Agency (BNPT). Golose told those in attendance that during the first six months of 2017, Police in Bali handled 572 narcotics-related cases, solving 526 cases (92%). The number of narcotics cases, he said, has increased substantially from 2016. Adding: “This has become a serious threat for the coming generations and the future of the Nation. I target to lower the number of illegal drug cases although it may be impossible to completely eliminate the problem.” The ceremony at Bali Police Headquarters saw 7.9 kilos of marijuana and a 1.35-meter tall marijuana plant burnt by police. Also destroyed were 1.187 kilos of methamphetamines, 668 ecstasy pills, 4,213 liters of homemade moonshine (arak), and 1,732 or Imported alcohol. [www.balidiscovery.com August 20, 2017] American tourist arrested receiving parcel containing hashish at the Bali post office Beritabali.com reports that the National Anti-Narcotics Agency (BNNP) have arrested a 32-year-old American tourist, identified only by the initials CB, caught in the process of receiving delivery of a shipment of hashish sent from Holland at the Sunset Road Post Office in Kuta on Tuesday, August 1, 2017. Two days earlier, the Sunset Road Postal Facility received four suspicious postal packages sent from Columbia, Holland, and Poland. Postal inspectors sent the four packages to the police forensic laboratory that confirmed the parcel sent from Holland contained 5.71 grams of hashish. The remaining three parcels tested negatively for any banned substance. BNNP enforcement officers immediately placed the post office under surveillance waiting to see who came to pick up the parcel containing narcotics. A short time later, the American tourist, CB, came to pick up the four packages all addressed to him. Police took the American and his parcels into custody while their official investigation continues. [www.balidiscovery.com August 13, 2017] Bali 9 Australian Renae Lawrence won’t get out next year Renae Lawrence, a member of the infamous Australian smuggling group the Bali Nine, has gotten six months knocked off her prison sentence, but that doesn’t mean she’ll get out next year, says the woman’s father. Lawrence, who’s currently serving out her sentence in Bali’s remote Bangli prison, received a remission for good behavior in concurrence with Indonesian’s Independence Day. It is customary for the country to reduce sentences ever so slightly during special holidays for well-behaved Indonesian and foreign prisoners alike. While it was reported that Lawrence could see a release date of next year if her recommendation for a remission went through, that won’t be the case for the 39-year-old, because she’s got a “subsidiary sentence”: an extra six months on top of her sentence that she must serve unless she pays a $100,000 fee. “She won’t be getting out when they say she’s getting out because there’s a $100,000 fine she’s got to pay and we can’t pay that – we haven’t got it,” her father, Rob Lawrence told Australia’s 9 Network. “She’s going to have to do the extra time to cut it out.” Upon her ultimate release, Lawrence will keep under the radar says her father, unlike former fellow Australian inmate, Schapelle Corby who has become an Instagram sensation since being deported back to Oz from Bali in May, post-parole. “She just wants to come home and get on with her life. She doesn’t want it to be like the Corbys,” Rob Lawrence said. Lawrence was handed 20 years behind bars for her role in a 2004 heroin smuggling operation involving nine Australians called the Bali Nine. The group’s ringleaders Andrew Chan and Myuran Sukumaran were executed by firing squad in April 2015. Since being locked up, she has reportedly already gotten reductions of more than five years for good behavior. [Coconuts Bali August 18, 2017]

Kulture Kid! By Vaughan Hatch

What does ‘Pan’ or ‘Men’ mean in a Balinese Person’s Name? As you may have noticed, Balinese are the ultimate family people, close to even their extended family, and even their own community are often referred to as family even though there is no blood line. Not only are Balinese family people, they are also deeply proud of their children, to the point that parents are often known by the name(s) of their offspring. This is what the suffix ‘Pan’ or ‘Men’ refers to. It’s an abbreviation of Bapan and Memen respectively. Bapa in Balinese means father and meme means mother. The ‘n’ is added to show possession. After Pan or Men then follows the name of one of their children. My son’s name is Gede Semara, which means that I would most probably be nicknamed ‘Pan Semara’. Balinese normally choose the second name rather than the birth order name (e.g. Gede, Wayan, Made, Kadek, Nengah, Nyoman, Komang, Ketut, Agung, Gusti, Sang Ayu, Ida Ayu, Ida Bagus etc) so as not to confuse. For me this demonstrates how a parent kind of loses some of their own adult identity as soon as they become a parent – focus is much more on their offspring (and therefore the future of their family) rather than themselves. Sociologically speaking, this is reflective of the anonymity of the individual in Balinese society and the importance of the group, or, in this case, an extension of the self. Personally, I’ve noticed that these terms are more common in the villages these days than in the cities and tourism areas. In fact, in more modern families that are well known in society, particularly if they are celebrities, their children are sometimes given the ‘family name’ (actually it’s normally just their last name as Balinese don’t traditionally have a family name) of the famous parent. This is both an influence of Western culture on Balinese naming habits and also so that others know that their children have a famous parent or parents. I’d predict, that as with the adoption of Western names, more and more Balinese will pass on their last name to their offspring, copying again something from outside of their culture rather than continuing with their own tradition.
