4 The Frugal Balinist ✱ Affordable organic. Canggu Shop sells healthy, fresh food at low prices (Rp26,000Rp96,000): dried fruit, nuts, seeds, local cheese, coconut sugar, coconut flakes, homemade hummus, flavored kombucha teas, fresh almond milk, probiotics-filled kefir and other specialty items not easily found in Bali. Located Jl. Pantai Batu Bolong 23A, Canggu, Kuta Utara, hp 0859-5378-0775; opening Mon-Sun 9 am-6 pm. *Buy organic nuts, lentils and snacks from the bulk dispensers at Bali Buda (www.balibuda.com). ✱ Bad food. Excess sugar consumption is dangerous. There’s no reason supplemental nutrients need to come in the form of a sugary beverage such as sugar-sweetened sodas that are nothing but liquid candy. Gatorade Quiet Storm contains 16 gr of sugar per serving (roughly four teaspoons). Milo (Rp40,000/kg) is another sugary powder drink made by Nestlé. Vendors set up snack stalls on the sidewalks outside schools hawking soda, chocolates, puffed corn and rice snacks. Indonesian food companies are slow to put nutritional information - the levels of fat, sugars and protein - on their packaging. Supermarket aisles are filled with instant noodles, soda and rows of sugary breakfast cereals which are not part of the traditional Indonesian diet. Even traditional Indonesian cuisines, including coconut cream dishes and other sugar-laden street foods, are key contributors to the high level of obesity on Bali. Nestlé’s Stars (28% sugar) as well as Nestlé’s Koko Krunch and Cookie Crisp cereals, even though they sport the “whole grain” label, are more than 25% sugar by weight. Lack of exercise, even more than diet, is also to blame for rising obesity rates (Indonesians don’t walk).

✱ Protect against accidents. Choose your insurance company carefully. Most won’t insure a car over 10 years old. Also the cost of insurance should not always be the top priority. You’ll be able to find some low premium providers but the true value and integrity of such products will only be discovered after you make a claim. If the car is in your name and if you have a KITAS/KITAP visa, all is well. But if the car isn’t in your name, any insurance settlement for third party liability, driver/passenger property damage, personal injury or death will be made to the registered person who may or may not be the actual “owner.” As a foreigner, you’re always in the wrong in case of a road accident. Although good body work is cheap, in case of an accident your insurance company will choose the repair shop. Find out which repair shop your car insurer uses; an untrained mechanic can do serious damage to your car. Note: Car insurance is only required if your car is financed. If you pay for the vehicle in full, there’s no requirement for insurance. ✱ Certification nil. According to the Jakarta Post, there’s little enforcement of the Indonesian National Standards (SNI) certification, leaving consumers vulnerable to false claims on the labels of 544 product categories including wheat flour, TV sets, DVD players, vacuum cleaners, automotive parts, sauce pans and knives. This means that the high quality of rice that promises to be tender and fragrant turns out to be mushy and tasteless because it was mixed with rice of a different quality. ✱ Forever travel. If you’re planning long-term overseas travel, don’t buy a deeply entrenched investment such as a house and stick to per diem budget, minimize health insurance costs by using local doctors, prepare local food, stay in hostels ($6 to $25) or university housing, get travel insurance that will fly you back home if you get injured or fall seriously ill. *If you don’t like noise, stay away from hostels where a “party” or “night life” atmosphere is featured prominently in their reviews. *Check out George Santayana’s wonderful essay, The Philosophy of Travel. *Lifestraw from Bali’s Kopernik, universal adapter plugs; a portable battery to charge your smartphone; a paper clip to swap out SIM cards on your smartphone; a Kindle or e-reader; a good travel pillow and noise-isolating earphones are all invaluable accouterments for long range travel. *When using multiple airlines through multiple countries, learn the baggage rules of all your connecting airlines and pack your carry-ons and checked baggage to conform to the airlines with the most restrictive baggage policy.
C/CI/G-12 April 17
✱ Your Cash. Compare the cost of living in Denpasar with that of the city you’re planning to move to at expatisan. com. *If it sounds too good to be true, it probably is. *Never give out personal information over the phone, through email, cash checks for other individuals or wire large amounts of money to someone you don’t know. 99.9 percent of the time, it’s a scam. *Rupiah notes from wet markets have thousands of times more bacteria than clean fresh notes from ATMs. *To prevent skimming, use only ATMs attached directly to banks that have security guards and use them only during business hours. *Tiap orang dibeli. “Everyone can be bought. Everyone has his price.”
✱ Smart Health. Skin-whitening products sold in Indonesia have been conclusively proven to be damaging both physically and emotionally. *For subscribers of Class I (Rp80,000/month) of the BPJS National Health Insurance program, go to your puskemas and ask to be referred to a local hospital, specialist or internist for lab tests that may indicate anemia or infection: cholesterol, PSA (prostate), blood count, blood sugar, blood pressure, etc. *People who sit 9-10 hours a day are more likely to injure their heart muscles and develop diabetes. *In terms of health impacts, use olive oil (Rp200,000-Rp225,000/liter) instead of coconut oil (Rp20,000 to Rp25,000/liter) that contains six times more saturated fat. ✱ Bali roads: New parking rules have been introduced on Jl. Dewi Sita, Jl. Suweta and other busy Ubud streets; noncompliance may mean tickets, towing and locking vehicle tires. *Allow more time to get to and from the airport because of delays caused by the narrowing of the highway due to construction of a new underpass and changes in the traffic flow. ✱ Authentic old fashioned cornbread. Virtually non-existent in Bali, cornbread is remarkably easy to make once you have corn flour. The tepung jagung (Rp5,000/kg) you buy in the market is not corn flour but corn starch. Real corn flour is most easily obtained by first drying corn kernals (Rp3,000/ kg), take to a mill (slip) to husk, soak all night, then bring the meal to the mill again to make genuine corn flour. Or buy beras jagung (Rp12,000/kg), soak it all night and then grind it in a coffee grinder or pound (tumbuk) the corn kernels in a mortar and pestle. Super Bowl Sunday? Or is That Monday? Whether you are one of the millions who tune in because you truly love your gridiron and all that ridiculous padding that goes with it, have a hankering to see who’s presenting the half time entertainment (how could we forget THAT Janet Jackson incident!!) or someone who doesn’t give a toss about the touchdowns but desperate to see those million dollar ads, the Super Bowl is undeniably one of the most viewed sporting events across the world today and a spectacle well worth the watch.
Will it be the Jacksonville Jaguars or odds on favourites and last year’s winners, New England Patriots; the Philadelphia Eagles or home team Minnesota Vikings to take home the trophy? We won’t know until after the playoffs but one thing is for certain, it’s going to be one helluva show! For a guaranteed seat to see all of this year’s Super Bowl Sunday excitement, come along to Finns on February 5th. Footy fan or not, it’s a pretty awesome way to spend a Monday! Finnsrecclub.com
Thanks to the multitude of television screens around Finns Recreation Club and in The Sports Bar, you won’t be needing to venture far to see this year’s game - the 52nd clash since January 15th, 1967 and officially referred to as Super Bowl LII. Due to time differences, (we are WAY ahead of you USA!) we can’t really call it Super Bowl Sunday here in Bali because our telecast of the big game commences from 7am on Monday February 5th. Irrespective of the international dateline, Super Bowl is on at Finns! Even if, like yours truly, you know nothing about American Football and are a complete clueless when it comes to NFL (that stands for National Football League by the way - the stars and stripes version) you must have heard about Super Bowl Sunday! Nope, nothing remotely associated with a bowling ball or white shoes and astroturf, Super Bowl Sunday is one of the most anticipated days on the North American sporting calendar. It’s the annual championship game between what was once the American Football League and the National Football League before their official ‘merger’ in 1970.
Not a morning person? Grumpy face be gone when you discover that Happy Hour starts from 7am and continues all day! And what’s a football game without footy franks? Tuck into an American breakfast or some finger lickin’ chicken wings for some sustenance throughout the game with Bistro C’s regular menu still available. The game kicks off with international artist Pink belting out the Star Spangled Banner and this year’s heavily anticipated half time show is from none other than Justin Timberlake, a soon to be third time veteran of Super Bowl Sunday performances, having appeared previously in 2001 and 2004. Though we’re not likely to see any more wardrobe malfunctions for this year’s performance!

THE BIG “C” - Cancer…..Who’s Next? It is becoming more and more likely that you or someone that you know will be diagnosed with some form of cancer in the future. The rate of cancer cases has increased drastically over the past decade. Research suggests that there were 17.5 million cancer cases worldwide in 2015 and 8.7 million deaths. This is up from 14 million cases and 8.2 million deaths in 2012. Clearly, cancer is not going away anytime soon.
The Top 13 Most Common Types of Cancer Skin Cancer 1. The incidence of both non-melanoma and melanoma skin cancers has been increasing over the past decades. Currently, between 2 and 3 million non-melanoma skin cancers and 132,000 melanoma skin cancers occur globally each year. Sun exposure is the major cause. Melanoma accounts for less than one percent of skin cancer cases, but the vast majority of skin cancer deaths. 2. Lung Cancer: Lung cancer is the leading cause of cancer-related deaths in the world. It has one of the lowest survival rates, claiming more than 1.5 million lives every year worldwide. There are various types of lung cancer but the most common is “non-small cell lung cancer.” The primary cause of lung cancer is smoking. 3. Liver Cancer: This cancer took the lives of 788,000 people globally in 2015. As your body’s primary organ for filtration, you cannot live without your liver. This organ processes all your blood - a preferred mode of transportation for cancer cells, which is why most cases of liver cancer are secondary sites. In other words, they are cancers that start elsewhere and end up in the liver. When cancer actually starts in the liver, the cause is usually alcohol abuse, a birth defect, or chronic infection such as hepatitis B or C. 4. Stomach Cancer: Stomach cancer results in more than 750,000 deaths per year. This type of cancer affects the lining of the stomach, and sometimes goes undetected at the earliest stage. 5. Colorectal Cancer: Cancer found in the colon or the rectum causes the deaths of almost 800,000 people annually. If caught early, the survival rates are excellent. 6. Breast Cancer: Breast cancer occurs in the breast tissues of both males and females - claiming the lives of more than 500,000 people every year. The malignant tumor that grows in this tissue spreads quickly to other parts of the body if left untreated. Breast cancer is the second most common cancer diagnosed in women (after skin cancer). 7. Esophageal Cancer: Throat cancer - also known as cancer of the food pipe - claims the lives of more than 400,000 people each year globally. 8. Cervical Cancer: The cervix is located at the lower end of the uterus and opens into the upper portion of the vaginal canal. If the cells in this area undergo changes that are undetected over time, cervical cancer could occur. It is responsible for over 260,000 deaths worldwide. 9. Prostate Cancer: There may be no signs or symptoms of prostate cancer until it has spread to other areas of the body. That’s the reason it claims the lives of 1.1 million men annually. 10. Bladder Cancer: There are over 400,000 new cases of bladder cancer diagnosed each year globally. Fortunately, bladder cancer causes discomfort during urination so it is detected earlier than many other forms of cancer.
11. Pancreatic Cancer: This cancer is aggressive and there are few symptoms of the disease until it is advanced. Abdominal pain, jaundice, and unexplained weight loss are signs that manifest in some patients. Pancreatic cancer claims the lives of over 330,000 people yearly. 12. Leukemia: Cancer of the blood cells is called leukemia. It begins in your bone marrow where most blood cells are produced. Too many immature blood cells are created which crowd out the healthy blood cells, leading to increased risk of infection, extreme fatigue, and anemia. Leukemia causes the deaths of approximately 353,000 people every year. 13. Non-Hodgkin’s Lymphoma: This cancer starts in the white blood cells of your lymphatic system – the core of your immune system. Abdominal pain, fatigue, and swollen lymph nodes (found in your armpits, neck, and groin) are symptoms some patients have reported. Combined, these 13 types of cancer account for almost 75% of all diagnosed cancer cases in the world. In many cases, what is known about cancer prevention is still evolving. However, it is well known that your chances of developing cancer are affected by the lifestyle choices you make. So if you’re concerned about cancer prevention, take comfort in the fact that some simple lifestyle changes can make a big difference. Consider these seven cancer prevention tips. 1. Don’t use tobacco Using any type of tobacco puts you on a collision course with cancer. Smoking has been linked to various types of cancer - including cancer of the lung, mouth, throat, larynx, pancreas, bladder, cervix and kidney. Even if you don’t use tobacco, exposure to secondhand smoke might increase your risk of lung cancer. Avoiding tobacco - or deciding to stop using it - is one of the most important health decisions you can make. 2. Eat a healthy diet Although making healthy selections at the grocery store and at mealtime can’t guarantee cancer prevention, it might help reduce your risk. Consider these guidelines: • Eat plenty of fruits and vegetables. Base your diet on fruits, vegetables and other foods from plant sources such as whole grains and beans. In addition, women who eat a Mediterranean diet supplemented with extravirgin olive oil and mixed nuts might have a reduced risk of breast cancer. The Mediterranean diet focuses on mostly on plant-based foods, such as fruits & vegetables, whole grains, legumes and nuts. People who follow the Mediterranean diet choose healthy fats, like olive oil, over butter and fish instead of red meat. • Avoid obesity. Eat lighter and leaner by choosing fewer high-calorie foods, including refined sugars and fat from animal sources. • If you drink alcohol, do so only in moderation. The risk of various types of cancer - including cancer of the breast, colon, lung, kidney and liver - increases with the amount of alcohol you drink and the length of time you’ve been drinking regularly. • Limit processed meats. A report from the International Agency for Research on Cancer, the cancer agency of the World Health Organization, concluded that eating large amounts of processed meat can slightly increase the risk of certain types of cancer. 3. Maintain a healthy weight and be physically active Maintaining a healthy weight might lower the risk of various types of cancer, including cancer of the breast, prostate, lung, colon and kidney. Physical activity counts, too. In addition to helping you control your weight, physical activity on its own might lower the risk of breast cancer and colon cancer.
Adults who participate in any amount of physical activity gain some health benefits. But for substantial health benefits, strive to get at least 150 minutes a week of moderate aerobic activity or 75 minutes a week of vigorous aerobic physical activity. 4. Protect yourself from the sun Skin cancer is one of the most common kinds of cancer and one of the most preventable. Try these tips: • Avoid midday sun. Stay out of the sun between 10 a.m. and 4 p.m., when the sun’s rays are strongest. • Stay in the shade. When you’re outdoors, stay in the shade as much as possible. Sunglasses and a broadbrimmed hat help, too. • Cover exposed areas. Wear tightly woven, loose fitting clothing that covers as much of your skin as possible. Opt for bright or dark colors, which reflect more ultraviolet radiation than pastels or bleached cotton. • Don’t skimp on sunscreen. Use generous amounts of sunscreen when you’re outdoors, and reapply often. • Avoid tanning beds and sunlamps. These are just as damaging as natural sunlight. 5. Get immunized Cancer prevention includes protection from certain viral infections. Talk to your doctor about immunization against: • Hepatitis B. Hepatitis B can increase the risk of developing liver cancer. The hepatitis B vaccine is recommended for certain high-risk adults - such as adults who are sexually active but not in a mutually monogamous relationship, people with sexually transmitted infections, intravenous drug users, men who have sex with men, and health care or public safety workers who might be exposed to infected blood or body fluids. 6. Avoid risky behaviors Another effective cancer prevention tactic is to avoid risky behaviors that can lead to infections that, in turn, might increase the risk of cancer. For example: • Practice safe sex. Limit your number of sexual partners, and use a condom when you have sex. The more sexual partners you have in your lifetime, the more likely you are to contract a sexually transmitted infection - such as HIV or HPV. People who have HIV or AIDS have a higher risk of cancer of the anus, liver and lung. HPV is most often associated with cervical cancer, but it might also increase the risk of cancer of the anus, penis, throat, vulva and vagina. • Don’t share needles. Sharing needles with an infected drug user can lead to HIV, as well as hepatitis B and hepatitis C - which can increase the risk of liver cancer. If you’re concerned about drug abuse or addiction, seek professional help. Next edition “Cancer Prevention Screening”

14 2017’s most important health breakthroughs... Or, just the most profitable? Promising new breasts grown from their own stem cells to women who have undergone mastectomy has been on the cards, since the last decade of the last century. Back in November 2008 newspapers reported that it would be a reality for women in 2009. Nine years on - in January 2018, women are still waiting. The reality? It’s still on the cards. Meantime, women have to make do with silicone implants that have to be replaced and very often leak silicone gel into the body. This is just one of the cruel bits of medical misinformation so persistently and carelessly infl icted, in the main, by the media on far too many men and women hoping for a new treatment or cure for the condition that afflicts them. It is not just the gutter press that offends in this way. The ‘quality’ media in practically any country you care to name will report that some breakthrough drug or procedure is imminent or “on the cards”, but a lot less forthcoming as to when it will actually come to pass. In late 2017 for example, the Reader’s Digest, scooping the National Enquirer, reported that head transplants were now a serious reality. While I wouldn’t exactly describe the RD as quality media (once upon a time it used to fine its journalists for inaccuracies), it’s interesting to note that it’s now about as loopy as the Republican party, whose spirit it embodies. There are a number of reasons why the media as a whole act in this irresponsible fashion; the two main ones are – first, it makes a good headline; and second? There is a swagload of money riding on getting the news out there. The truth is that it will take a decade at best, or more likely anything up to four decades before the reported “breakthrough” becomes commonly available to the average patient in need. There is a natural process of attrition involving tests, trials and research before any new drug or procedure becomes available to patients. And quite right too. But this is a very expensive process and if left entirely up to the private sector to decide where this money should be spent, we can hardly be surprised if it goes to medical ventures providing the biggest and quickest profit to the investor, irrespective of medical need. The tantalising reality is that there is such a body of medical science and research already out there, almost certainly containing the answers to most of the existing medical scourges of man, and with more being added by the day, that it would take an Amazonian basin of quantum computers to sort it all out. Doesn’t mean we shouldn’t at least try to prioritize the application of resources, but to leave it all up to private investors, heavily subsidized by public money, is not just unfair, it’s actually insane. We could and should order things better than this. Given this reality what can we do to inform ourselves? One flawed but helpful source is the Cleveland Clinic in the US, who for fourteen years have held their Medical Innovation Summit, which each November publishes their findings as to the top ten medical experiments in the coming year that will change patient care forever. It is as good an assessment as we can get, showing where the smart money has gone and what will really be on the market any day soon. Here are their picks for 2018 in order of importance: Using the microbiome to prevent, diagnose & treat disease Microbes in our body interfere with the way food is digested, which medicine is effective and how disease progresses. Biotech companies, once focused on the genomic market, are pivoting to the microbiome potential developing new diagnostics, therapies and probiotics to prevent dangerous microbial imbalances. Experts now say the microbiome is the healthcare industry’s most promising and lucrative frontier. Diabetic drugs to reduce cardiovascular disease & death Half of patients with Type 2 diabetes die from complications of cardiovascular disease. By age 65, those odds increase to 70%. Two medications, empagliflozin and liraglutide, introduced in 2016 have reduced mortality rates significantly. Experts expect a complete shift in medication
targeting Type 2 diabetics and its effects. Cellular immunotherapy to treat leukemia & lymphomas One of the first immunotherapies for leukemia and nonHodgkin lymphomas is on the market. Chimeric antigen receptor T-cell therapies treat a patient’s immune system when T-cells are removed and genetically re-programmed to destroy tumour cells. An almost 90% success rate with acute lymphoblastic leukemia will trigger a wave of FDA approvals for other blood cancers and lymphomas that in time may see immunotherapy replacing chemotherapy. Liquid biopsies to find circulating tumour DNA Such tests reveal signs of actual ctDNA in the bloodstream and sales of this cancer test are expected to top US$10 billion in 2018. Experts believe catching and treating cancer this way will soon be as routine as an annual checkup.

Automated car safety & driverless features With more than 38,000 fatal car crashes in the US in 2015, car accidents are a leading cause of death and diability with annual medical costs at nearly $23 billion. New rules and safety features designed to remove hunman error from the equation as driverless cars enter the market are attracting heavy investment. Fast healthcare interoperability resources (FHIR) Given the sheer diversity of IT systems sharing patient data between healthcare providers, efficiency has been a huge problem. FHIR will bring “instant“ compatability to differing healthcare systems in two phases: first, by focusing on clinical data, images and medications; and second, on admin data, billing, etc. Let us pray that the latter leads to clear and fair pricing. Ketamine for treatment-resistant depression For one third of US patients with depression existing medication does not work, as witnessed by nearly 43,000 suicides a year. Since 2013, ketamine, a drug used for anaesthesia was found to inhibit NMDA receptors producing rapid reduction of symptoms in nearly 70% of severely depressed patients. The FDA in the US has fasttracked approvals and the drug is now becoming available.

3-D visualisation & augmented reality for surgery Surgeons rely on micro oculars and other camera systems, while still operating heads down. Following success in two of the most intricate fields, neurosurgery and retinal microsurgery, surgeons will increasingly operate headsup on-screen in hi-res 3-D on stereoscopic systems more efficiently and effectively. Self-administered human papillovirus (HPV) test Most sexually active women contract HPV. Certain strains of HPV are responsible for 99% of cervical cancer. Despite strides in the prevention and treatment of HPV, benefits have been restricted to women with access to HPV tests and vaccines. A simple self-administereed test represents the biggest means of prevention of cervical cancer to date, so experts claim. Bioabsorbable stents Every year 600,000 Americans have metal stents put in their coronary arteries to treat blockage. There they remain, useful or not. So now a bioabsorble stent has been decreed and will be on the market this year with sales of $2 billion p.a. expected within 6 years. That’s ten reasons for those working or investing in the healthcare industry to be pleased. For some of us too, it’s good news. For others, it is useful information to store away in the back of our minds in case it becomes useful. What is clear from this list is that the findings are almost entirely governed by which development is going to make the most money. By no stretch of the imagination does that mean this list defines the ten most important medical developments likely to save lives. That could well be a very different list, but for now... just follow the money.

Cultivating Peace & Calm As I sit here listening to the cocks crowing and the birds whistling just outside my window, I have a glimpse of the peace and calm that is always available, but is also elusive at times. Why is this? So many of my clients come to me and say that all they want is to have peace, but they don’t know how to have it or receive it. Life has become overwhelming with stresses about money, health, challenges with friends or partners, and the list goes on. That’s just it – most people keep thinking about all the things that are wrong in their lives and can’t get out of the stress loop. So that’s when some folks start to ‘self medicate’. Just a glass of wine or two or maybe a nice joint and everything will be just fine – unfortunately it won’t. Drinking or smoking will only disguise the issues that are still bubbling beneath the surface. When the high wears off then one still must face their issues which may even be more magnified as a result of all the years we’ve chosen to numb ourselves with substances or denial. The only way we can truly have peace and calm in our lives is to heal our core issues and wounds that have been festering for many years inside of us. It takes a great deal of courage to go deep into our being and uncover these wounds that have been blocking us and creating a great deal of pain and suffering in our lives. I know this because I too take time out every few months to take a deep dive into my soul and heal my own core wounds. It’s really hard to do this and honestly I don’t always like it, but afterwards the end result is that I feel the peace and calm that I’ve been yearning for – that I’ve always known is possible but has been just out of my reach. When we address the root causes contributing to our stress, unhappiness, anxiety, etc., we uncover the peace and calm that has always been within us but we never knew how to access before. This is not a quick fix. We may need to spend many years exploring different tools or methods for self healing and empowerment. Sometimes we will take two steps forward and one step back, but we don’t give up. We keep moving forward because we know that this is the only option. We can never go back to the way things were or who we once were, because the past isn’t going to repair the rips in our heart and soul. And yet, there’s still so much fear to uncover our wounds. There’s a part of us deep deep inside that is afraid that if our wounds are exposed and we begin to heal them, that we’ll have a total break down. The façade that we’ve portrayed all these years will fall away and we must accept the raw truth of who we are. This can be totally terrifying for most people, because we are socialized to think that vulnerable = weak. This is especially the case with most men, which is quite unfortunate. Being a mother of two sons I have tried to bring them up with different beliefs. I’ve always told them that it’s okay to cry and express their feelings, yet I can still see that sometimes this is very difficult for them. As much as I have supported my sons to be open and vulnerable, our society has not. They too have been conditioned by their peers and other men to be tough, often hearing other men say: “Men don’t cry. You’ve got to be strong.” When we are conditioned to not show our feelings and suck it up, how can we have peace and calm in our lives? I believe that true peace and calm can only be cultivated through our willingness to be authentic and own our feelings instead of suppressing them. As we open up our hearts and heal our blocks our energy shifts into a higher vibration which then attracts higher vibrational people and experiences to us. Only then can we open up to the peace within and around us. As we continue to uncover and heal ourselves even more, peeling back the onion layers of our lives, our vibration shifts even higher, allowing peace and calm to expand within us more and more.

So how do we begin this process of uncovering our wounds and healing them? Here are a list of some of the methods and tools that I’ve personally utilized for myself and my clients that will help you get started: 1. Reiki is a great healing system that you can learn to empower and heal yourself as well as others. 2. Shamanism is one of my favorites, because you can get direct access to ascended masters and other spirit guides for healing, wisdom and empowerment. 3. Core Energetics is a power body-psycho-spiritual practice which can assist you to uncover and heal your core wounds and find peace. 4. Access Consciousness offers a system of tools for empowerment utilizing potent questions, clearings and hands on the body processes such as the BARS. 5. Meditation is a great tool for quieting the mind and cultivating greater inner peace. I recommend learning with an instructor for a few times so you can understand how to effectively meditate. 6. Chi gong is a mind-body-spirit practice which is considered to be ‘meditation in motion’. This is a great practice especially for those who are hyper and can’t do sitting meditation as you are utilizing movements synchronized with your breath which is very calming. 7. Spend time grounding yourself in nature. Walk barefoot on the beach or through a ricefield. When we connect with nature our bodies and minds easily relax and release all stress from our bodies. This is the simplest and one of the most effective ways to experience total peace and calm. Well those are my top 7 ways to attain peace and calm. If you have any other ideas please email: mcempaka@gmail.comm and let me know and I’ll be sure to mention them in one of my upcoming columns.

and keeps them clean and regularly fills them? Then an even BIGGER PROBLEM, the tap water is turned off every morning at 10 am by the government!!
People = Money = Projects!! Hundreds of years ago, bartering was how people survived, exchanging one commodity for another. Even in this day and age this can still be found in many countries where people lived isolated and simple lives. For example: I grow corn, you grow bananas, we exchange and now both communities have variety of foods. However in the majority of the world with developing nations this does not occur! People work, they want to earn more and more money to fund their life styles!! Children are brought up in a very money orientated world, and sadly, I believe wanting everything NOW!! The old way of save then buy has been eradicated. Credit, buy now pay later has allowed this to happen, and adults as well as children ignore the fact the money has to be repaid and usually with interest!! I am not saying it is wrong, as not everyone does follow this path. It is just as well people do have the ethos to work and earn as I am now getting to my point of PMP!! There are so many people who are giving so generously to all the PROJECTS around the world!! Rotary the International organisation has over 1.2 million members and 35,000+ clubs around the world! The 6 main focuses of Rotary are: 1. Promoting Peace 2. Fighting disease 3. Providing clean water, sanitation and hygiene 4. Saving mothers and children 5. Supporting education 6. Growing local economies As much as we would love to we cannot do everything so we have to focus on a few objectives and do our best with them.
Rotary clubs world-wide depend on active membership, dedicated members, all working together to achieve a goal, and those goals are our PROJECTS!! But to achieve our project goals we need money!!! Our money comes from many sources, the yearly membership fees, which vary from club to club, donations from members, donations from non- members, donations from companies, businesses, fund raising events. For the many regular readers of Bali Advertiser, and those who read the “Rotary News” column, you will have knowledge of all the projects undertaken, by the Rotary clubs in Bali. There are so many projects and always a new one will emerge as the need arises, and the need at present has arisen. With the eruption of Mt. Agung and the subsequent evacuation programme, the problems associated with many people in a small area are huge. Food/water/medicines/ shelter/ clothing/ sanitation/hygiene/ the sick/the elderly/ the pregnant/ the children. The fathers/ husbands who cannot farm or care for animals, or work in general. It is impossible for each Rotary club to address every issue, though we may try; funds are at a premium depending on donations from whoever can give a little or a lot! Rotary Club Bali Ubud Sunset in conjunction with “Yayasan Kita Peduli/Rumah Sehat”( run by 2 of our members) which has a free medical clinic, school, between Culik and Amed in the regency of Karangasem, is deemed an official evacuation centre. The main problem is providing water to all the evacuees; think about how much water you use in a day from the minute you get up to going to bed? It is quite considerable? Yes? So how do we provide water for all those people? Initially the large 19 litre containers were supplied, they cost money, and use electricity and they have to be transported to Amed. Then there were many donations of the Nazava water filtration system. This is a 2 tier system, where ordinary tap water is poured into the top tier and it is filtered through a special ceramic filter. A great system, as after initial outlay, only tap water needed. But the problem here is who maintains them
So now I come to the PROJECT!!! Rotary Club Bali Ubud Sunset has approved a project proposal from some of our members to dig a bore to provide water! But, and there is always a but, it has to be financed! RCBUS has approved funds for half of the cost; and there is now a funding proposal submitted to the District for a District Grant. This is funds that clubs in a certain area can request, not always successful, sadly! Once they approve and I am being very positive they will, then RCBUS can go ahead with the project. A suitable dig has to be found; assessment of the site, before any digging takes place and then the building of it and the pumps required pumping the water to the surface. This will not just be for this emergency situation but will continue to supply water for the local people and of course the free medical clinic and the school. A very quick word on the “school” it is for students finishing high school who require extra skills in English language and computer skills to enhance the chance of working. It is a 6 month intense course and students are often sponsored for the fees. Anyone can sponsor a student and information on that can be found on the web site. The medical clinic is staffed by qualified nurses and doctors, treating people, free, from the remote areas that otherwise would have no medical care. The nurses also go to the villages for those who cannot walk to the clinic, or have any transport. I hope then our faithful readers, you can see how my title “People=Money=Projects,” is so relevant? We are hoping that the funds will be approved in the very near future so we can proceed with this absolutely vital project! Water is necessary for health/ hygiene/cooking/washing, sanitation and I cannot stress this enough! If you would like to contribute, attend a meeting, see what we do, we meet twice a month in Ubud, all ages welcome! We are a very relaxed club, no pomp and ceremony except for an agenda, meetings only last 1 hour with a social time before to enjoy a meal, if you wish. Once a month we have a guest speaker, who are very diverse and informative. So click on the following for all the information you may require!: http:// rotarybaliubudsunset.org. Local News Bitcoin cryptocurrency banned and under increasing scrutiny in Indonesia The Indonesian authorities are investigating the use of bitcoin within the holiday island of Bali, amid warnings by the central bank in Southeast Asia’s biggest economy over the risks posed by bitcoin according to local report. This has placed the virtual currencies under increasing scrutiny. According to Causa Iman Karana, head of Bank Indonesia’s representative office in Bali: “We found out from some postings on social media that Bali appeared to have become a haven for Bitcoin transactions. The next step is we will ban them as mandated by the law. We ask them not to use it anymore. Along with the Directorate of Special Crime Investigation unit, we will enforce the rule that all transactions in Indonesia must use rupiah.” Indonesia had previously been reported as having significant local adoption of Bitcoin usage, however, recent reports show that the Indonesian government is trying to restrict the use of the digital currency. The risk of money laundering and criminal activity has led to the increasing scrutiny. According to Causa, the probe started after the Indonesian Central Bank on Dec. 7, 2017 issued a regulation banning the use of digital currencies in payment systems. Karana said that the Indonesian Central Bank officials and police went undercover at the end of 2017 to investigate scores of businesses in Bali advertising online that they offered bitcoin payment services. He stated that the team found two cafes still using bitcoin as a means of payment, but 44 businesses including car rental outlets, hotels, travel companies and jewelry stores, previously offering the service, had now stopped. One of the cafes used bitcoin only for transactions of more than 243,000 rupiahs, or about 0.001 bitcoin. A single transaction took about 1 and a half hours to be processed and included a fee of 123,000 rupiahs so this had discouraged its wider use for payments, said Karana. The Central Bank officials refused to name the businesses because he was still waiting for further instructions from Bank Indonesia in Jakarta. “The next step is we will ban them as mandated by the law. We ask them not to use it anymore. Along with the Directorate of Special Crime Investigation unit, we will enforce the rule that all transactions in Indonesia must use rupiah.” Some locals in Bali said bitcoin was being used mainly by foreigners on the island, which is Indonesia’s tourism hub and has a large expatriate community. The harsh rhetoric against Bitcoin and other cryptocurrencies falls more in line with the Chinese and potential South Korean bans than the more lenient Australian position. Bitcoin.co.id, an Indonesian online cryptocurrency exchange, said on its website that bitcoin was trading at 162.70 million rupiah ($12,247) per unit after losing around a quarter of it value this week. [Cryptona January 21, 2018] Bali journalist associations condemn alleged police mistreatment of reporters at scene of raid on Chinese cyber fraud suspects Bali journalist associations are speaking out against alleged police mistreatment of two reporters on the island this week that they say violates the freedom of the press in Indonesia. Two journalists were allegedly intimidated and made to delete media from the scene of a police raid on Thursday, against a group of Chinese nationals suspected of participation in a cyber fraud syndicate. The Alliance of Independent Journalists (AJI) of Denpasar along with the Indonesian Television Journalists Association (IJTI) Bali spoke on Friday about the alleged mistreatment of Reuters journalist, Wayan Sukarda and Radar Bali photographer, Miftahuddin Mustofa Halim. The two were carrying out their journalistic duties in accordance with appropriate procedures, says AJI Denpasar chairman, Hari Puspita. “Regrettably, the authorities deleted videos from a Reuters journalist and deleted photos from a photographer from Radar Bali, Jawa Pos Group. The officers took disappointing actions, forbidding the taking of pictures of Chinese suspects who were herded off the scene of the crime. “That’s public space and the journalists were working under protection of the Press Law. We condemn this behavior that hurt their journalistic duties,” IJTI Chairman Anak Agung Gede Kayika said on Friday, as quoted by Merdeka. “We ask that the police respect journalistic work and understand the Press Law. AJI and IJTI also appeal to journalists to carry out their duties professionally, obey the beacons of the Press Law and the Journalistic Code of Ethics,” he added. It was reported that at least 48 Chinese nationals had been arrested in a series of police raids against cyber fraud syndicates on Thursday. Prior to the raids, Bali Police spokesperson Comr. Ismi Rahayu had communicated to reporters that plans were underway to conduct raids in four locations where some 100 Chinese nationals were allegedly engaging in illegal activities. Based on this information, Halim went to take photos at one of the raid locations disclosed to the press in Denpasar on Jl. Tukad Badung. Another journalist from Kompas, Cokorda Yudhisthira, also came to the same location. But with no police in sight, Halim and Yudhisthira moved to “location four” in Kutuh Village, South Kuta. When they got to “location four”, the place was swarming with police, who were securing a house filled with Chinese nationals. Upon arrival at the scene, Halim was asked where he came from, so he presented his press ID. As he started taking photos of the raid with the camera on his phone, two armed police officers approached him, demanding that he delete any photos. Without giving him any time, the officers seized the phone and deleted the photos themselves, Merdeka’s report of the incident alleges. Meanwhile, Sukarda had come to the scene separately to film footage for Reuters, but as soon as police saw him, his video recordings were also deleted by police. The blocking of coverage violates Article 18 paragraph 1 of Law no. 40 of 1999 regarding the press, which is punishable by a maximum sentence of two years or a maximum fine of IDR500 million (US$37,000), according to IJTI. [Coconuts Bali January 12, 2018] Komodo islands to limit number of visitors to prevent damage Travelers planning to come to Komodo National Park in West Flores, East Nusa Tenggara (NTT), should now keep an eye on possible government measures aiming to regulate visitor flows to one of the world’s top tourist destinations. The national park is one of the New Seven Wonders of Nature. The Komodo National Park Authority said on Saturday (20/1) it would issue a policy to put a limit on the number of tourists visiting Komodo this year, which is home to the world’s largest living lizards. “We shall set a limit to each tourism destination (in Komodo), on land and in diving locations,” Komodo National Park (TNK) head Sudiyono told Antara in the NTT provincial capital of Kupang. The Komodo National Park comprises about 30 islands including Komodo and Rinca islands where the Varanus komodoensis or komodo dragons are found. The TNK also has several attractive diving sites such as Batu Samsia, Chrystal Rock and Castle Rock. Sudiyono said the rapidly rising number of domestic and foreign visitors flocking to the Komodo National Park could threaten its habitat. Meanwhile, other TNK officials had previously warned that too many visitors coming to the area could cause its lizards to have stress and that shortage of prey could make visitors their target. In addition, the officials said, uncontrollable numbers people visiting Komodo would make it even more difficult for workers to keep the area clean. On this, Sudiyono said that raising ticket prices to enter TNK would likely be one measure to control the arrivals of visitors. Almost 120,000 domestic and foreign tourists visited the area in 2017, about 11 percent higher than in the previous year, according to park data. The Indonesian government had succeeded to develop Komodo into one of the country’s most attractive tourist destinations. It had developed Labuan Bajo Airport on mainland Flores into a world-class facility. In addition, Labuan Bajo has now transformed into a more vibrant town. Beside Komodo, other most popular tourist sites in Indonesia include Bali, Lombok Island, Borobudur Temple (Central Java), Bunaken Beach (North Sulawesi), Yogyakarta, Raja Ampat (Papua), Bromo Volcano (East Java), Lake Toba (North Sumatra), Wakatobi (Southeast Sulawesi), and Toraja (South Sulawesi). [Global Indonesian Voices January 21, 2018] Underpass update: Expect delays on northbound travel between Jimbaran and airport during January-February 2018 Work on the new underpass at the entrance to Bali’s Ngurah Rai International Airport shifted its focus on Saturday, January 20, 2018, to the southern side of the traffic circle bringing traffic delays and temporary changes to traffic flows to and from the airport. Balipost.com reports that traffic from the Jimbaran area heading north to the Airport should expect some delays due to a narrowing of the roadway to permit construction to continue. Police are recommending that motorists traveling from Jimbaran to the north should seek alternative routes. Tourist busses are being asked to travel via the toll way exiting at the Airport to avoid creating potential bottlenecks. Those in charge of the underpass project predict that traffic traveling north from Jimbaran to the airport will experience delays for one month until work on that section of the project is completed. Engineers warn that once work moves from one section of construction to another section, new challenges and delays will occur in other areas of the roadway in a race to have the underpass finished before October 2018 in time for the World Bank – International Monetary Fund Conference in Bali. Accordingly, travellers, and travel operators are warned to keep abreast of developments and allow more time when traveling to and from the Airport. As of January 18, 2018, construction supervisors say the underpass at the Airport’s entrance has reached 25.8% of its completion. [balidiscovery.com January 21, 2018]
Additional steps underway to ensure compliance with new traffic and parking rules in Ubud The Secretary of Transportation for the Regency of Gianyar in Bali, I Made Rai Ridartha, admitted to Bali Express on Monday, January 15, 2018, that vehicles are still violating Ubud’s new parking regulations with certain members of the local community demonstrating their open defiance of efforts to control on street parking in order to end Ubud’s severe traffic congestion. A month after new parking rules were introduced, many vehicles and motorbikes are still parking in prohibited areas with officials claiming they are unable to implement a strict enforcement of the new rules. When challenged by police and transportation authorities, violators plead ignorance of the rules or an urgent need to temporarily park in a forbidden zone. The boldest among the scofflaws simply tell police they don’t agree with the new parking regulations. In order achieve the end result of reducing traffic congestion, community leaders in Ubud, police and traffic wardens recently convened a meeting with members of the community working and living on roads where parking is now prohibited to seek compliance with the law. At the same time, police have pledged to place additional personnel on Jalan Monkey Forest, Jalan Dewi Sita and Jalan Suweta. Police are also pledging that if persuasive moves to seek compliance with the new parking rules do not work, firmer steps may include tickets, towing, and the locking of vehicle tires. Meanwhile tourism leaders warn that continued failure to handle issues connected to traffic congestion and cleanliness will result in Ubud’s disappearance as a favourite global tourism destination. Authorities are quick to point out that some improvements in traffic flow have been achieved since the trial introduction of new traffic and parking regulations in December 2017, but work remains to be done to eliminate the remaining vehicles in non-compliance with the law. [balidiscovery.com January 21, 2018] Indonesia looks to China to help boost slumping tourism in wake of Bali volcano eruptions: official Indonesia is doing its utmost to recover the falling numbers of Chinese tourists visiting Bali since the multiple eruptions last November of Mount Agung, a volcano on the popular island. Tourist companies were relying on rising numbers of visitors to Indonesia to help hit overall foreign visitor targets of 17 million and 20 million set for this year and next, respectively, according to industry statistics. But tourist bureaus have been struggling to convince tourists about their safety and security during their time spent in Bali, owing to continued seismic activity in the region. The picturesque resort island, which was selected as the world’s best tourist destination by TripAdvisor in 2017, has contributed around 40 percent to the nation’s overall foreign tourist arrivals for years, followed by the capital city of Jakarta at 30 percent and Indonesia’s western region that accounts for 20 percent. The brief closure of Bali airport following the multiple eruptions in late November last year and the subsequent high alert status over possible further eruptions have hammered Bali’s tourism industry. The volcanic events prompted governments of major tourist supplying countries to Indonesia to issue travel warning for their nationals traveling to Bali. In response, Indonesia’s tourism ministry took immediate steps to try and recover international confidence in the country and tried to redress Bali’s significant slump in visitors, as the numbers have been indispensable to the government’s tourism targets. “Visitors from China are extremely important for the tourism industry in Bali. We want to see them coming back to Bali again as soon as possible,” Vincensius Jemadu, Deputy Assistant for Asia Pacific Market Development at Indonesia’s Ministry of Tourism, told Xinhua in an inclusive interview in Bali recently. According to data released by Indonesia’s Central Agency on Statistics, Bali received 1.43 million Chinese tourists in the first 11 months of 2017, which accounted for around 25 percent of the total number of foreign tourists visiting Bali throughout the period. The government here has yet to announce the official data on the number of foreign tourist arrivals in Bali for December 2017. According to Jemadu, the multiple eruptions dealt a massive blow to the numbers of foreign tourist arrivals in Bali. Intensive promotions and tour package sales programs have since been formulated by the ministry with part of the programs to be held in several Chinese cities this month. The programs are a continuation of efforts implemented last year in 20 Chinese cities whose residents might be tempted to visit Indonesia. The current programs are mainly focused on recovering the confidence of Chinese tourists in the safety aspects of Bali related to the volcanic events and trying to boost package sales. Jemadu said that Indonesia relies heavily on China as the tourism industry is a mainstay of the nation’s overall economy. [Chinanews January 21, 2018]

Wayan Budiasa: Trash Hero
License No. 043/22-08/PM/I/2003
Wayan Budiasa is the body, soul and spirit of Trash Heroes Candidasa, part of a global voluntary organization that was formed in Thailand in 2013 by Roman Peter and is now present in 9 countries with 39 chapters. Trash Hero World’s mission is to create sustainable, community-based projects that remove existing waste and reduce future waste by inspiring long-term behavior change. The inspiration of the original founders as well as the founders of the Candidasa chapter has been and remains to be a deep sense of commitment to do something about the discomfort, sadness and heartbreak caused by trash polluting the beaches and environment of our beautiful and unique island. Why is Bali’s trash problem such a serious issue? There are many reasons why it’s important to address the trash epidemic. Not only is trash detrimental to human and animal health and to the island’s ecosystem, it’s also terrible for the economy because it has a very negative impact on tourism. Trash kills the wildlife and fish, destroys the coral and makes the beaches and water look grimly uninviting. All these systems are directly connected and essential for the livelihood of tens of thousands of fishermen, farmers and people working in the hospitality, water sport, snorkeling and diving industries – and thereby the sustainability of the high quality of life enjoyed by the majority of Balinese who rely on tourism. How does it work? It’s simple yet revolutionary. People come together once a week to pick up trash. That’s the foundation of each chapter. We also do our best to educate the community, spread awareness about the dire environmental impact of trash, reach out to and motivate children by visiting schools and engaging the kids in cleanup and sorting efforts, organize workshops and recycle the trash we collect. What do you do with the trash once it’s collected? Much of the trash we collect gets sorted and recycled. With the help of the dedicated kids from the local language school, Samuh Tunas Harapan, we separate recyclables at a trash “bank” (Bank Sampah Duta Tunas Mekar) in Samuh village. The trash is made up mostly of plastic in different forms. The students have started to make eco-bricks which will be used to make modular furniture, garden spaces and full scale buildings. The remainder goes to the local government dump (TPA). Can the closest TPA handle all the trash you collect? Not always. There are not enough recycling facilities on the island. Trucks haul recyclables to Surabaya in East Java, but it’s quite complicated, inefficient and expensive - far exceeding any revenue generated. The cost usually comes out of Trash Hero Candidasa donations and even out of individual’s pockets. More recycling facilities and help with transportation of trash are two areas where more government involvement would have a significant impact. How many people are engaged on a regular basis? Our weekly cleanups normally have 30–50 heroes taking part. Anyone can volunteer to join. Most volunteers are local residents, but sometimes a handful of foreigners and tourists join in. Rainy days might have fewer participants. Our largest cleanup last October, in which many Karangasem government officials took part, 420 trash heroes collected over half a ton of trash in one hour! Where do you get funding? Virtually all our funding comes from donations. A number of local businesses have made cash contributions sponsoring waste collection baskets that are now spread all around Candidasa. Donations remain key in order to sustain our undertaking. To illustrate the need, the cleaned plastic transported to Java nets less than Rp200,000 every six months after transport costs, while monthly operating costs run in the neighborhood of Rp1,000,000 per month.

Is TH taking hold in Bali’s other beachside communities? Trash Hero Indonesia now has 9 chapters, most on Bali: Candidasa, Amed, Canggu, Sanur, Saba, Ubud, Tanjung, but also Komodo and Gili Meno off Lombok. Together we’ve collected more than 50 tons of trash that was otherwise headed to the ocean where a single plastic bottle sticks around for 450 years!

Why is it so difficult to remedy Bali’s trash problem? The two biggest obstacles are how to reduce the source of the trash by educating people to dispose of trash properly and also what to do with the trash we’ve collected since there are not enough recycling options. Yet another big problem is the ongoing logistical challenge of separating, sorting and cleaning the trash. A particular headache is the nasty task of handling the enormous quantity of plastic bags which have virtually no monetary value. A move by the government to ban or place a “tax” on plastic bags, as has been done in many parts of the world, would go a long way to redressing that problem. How do you know that people’s attitudes about trash are changing? Some places have been getting cleaner. People are slowly realizing that a cleaner Bali means healthier, happier and more prosperous Balinese. Special baskets for recycling, sponsored by local businesses, were initially emptied once a month, but now many are filled after just a week and more frequent collection is necessary. We have also noticed that people who were first only standing around and watching us clean the beach now join in. Additionally, we now have a lot more participation and involvement of government employees.

What can people do to help? If there is a Trash Hero chapter in your area, donate an hour of your time to the cause. Monetary donations through Trash Hero World page on Facebook are deeply appreciated. You can also donate gloves, trash bags or trash transportation. If you own or manage a business, you could have your staff join the effort (while they are on the clock please, not on their free time!), as well as sponsor collection baskets. Does Trash Heroes have any future plans? Our dream is a facility on Bali to process, in an environmentally responsible way, the plastic we collect into commercially viable products such as plastic pellets for sale in the global marketplace.

Batu Bara is a steakhouse, but quite a different one. It calls itself an Argentine Grillery. Not easy to find as the entrance is very small on Jln Pengosekan, Ubud, just beside the car park of Café Arma. There is a small inside area with a larger outdoor terrace [covered] where most people prefer to sit to eat. Empanadas are South American pastries, half moon shape [pictured]. There are two available, one with cheese and corn the other with beef. The very Spanish Garlic Prawns are excellent as is the wood-smoked eggplant. Steaks are what the customers come here for and the available cuts vary from night to night, the prices are displayed on a board. After a kitchen preparation your selected steak is presented at the table and placed on an adjoining one with a tray of hot red embers. The waiter [quite often the owner] slices your steak and places it on the small grill, for you to remove as soon as it is cooked to your liking. Sides include plates of grilled mixed vegetables, green beans, hand-cut fries and/or a plate of Potato Parmentier [potato mashed with butter, cream and truffle]. All good fun and a very different way to enjoy your steak!
Chachara describes itself as being ‘in the heart of Seminyak’! In fact it is far from Seminyak as it is on Jln, Batu Belig, Kerobokan. For such a stylish fit-out the prices here are amazingly reasonable. Open for Brunch on Sundays and dinner only, Tuesday to Saturday, they offer a tantalising range of snacks, tapas, and things. The Carpaccio di Gamberi [prawns] is very unusual, Mini Hamburguesas are what the Americans call Sliders. South American Ceviche [marinated raw fish], Italian Polpettes [meat balls] and Spanish Churrasco are all available. Thar wonderful Spanish cold soup Gazpacho is served Andalusian style, a classic Paella Valenciana, a steak and whole fish and you have a menu that should suit everyone. DD Warung was a small Thai café on the backstreets of western Sanur. It won our award in 2016 for the Best Cheap Eat in Bali, it also would have won our award for the best REAL Thai food in Bali if there had been one. Sadly it closed down after Christmas 2016 and all of us Thai food lovers were lamenting missing our Thai lunch and dinner experiences. No cuisine has ever been so misrepresented across Indonesia [and most other Asian countries outside of Thailand] than Thai. The word ‘Thai’ finds it way into many menu item names that are not. Now DD Warung is back, bigger and better than ever, on Jln. Danau Poso, Sanur, in a double setting, inside or out in the garden. The menu is still the same and so, amazingly, are the prices. A Kra Pao, as fiery as you want it [minced pork or chicken, chilli and Thai holy basil, with rice topped with a fried egg, flash-fried Thai style] makes a perfect lunch dish. Chicken & Cashews [the Thai version not the original Cantonese] or the famous Pad Thai [the classic noodle dish] make perfect non-chilli options for lunch. Evenings are the time for curries, red, green or a masaman from the south of Thailand.

Italian Corner is just off Jln. Nakula, Legian @ Gang Baik 23B. All the locals rave about the pizzas from here, although better to eat in or collect your self for takeaway than order by delivery. They offer all of the standard pizzas, though they are more American than Italian with the thin crisp base that I prefer. Many different toppings are available and there is no problem if you want to create your own or double up on the ones that you like best. A friendly spot and so popular!
Food Courts are traditionally found in business centres close to high rise office buildings where many people want to lunch quickly, and cheaply. Many have failed, in Bali and elsewhere, when located in low-rise residential areas. On Ubud’s Jln. Tebesaya, opp. the Sens Hotel, a large food court is proving the exception to that rule. It is gradually attracting a number of key players and its spacious area makes it quite a relaxing experience, not the usual rush rush of food courts internationally. Plenty of nearby parking [except during cremations and other major ceremonies] makes it very attractive for locals and tourists who want a quality meal at a low price. Available are Balinese and regional Indonesian cuisines as well as a growing list of international ones providing a big choice for everyone. An added plus for tourists is that as almost all Ubud F&B outlets are staffed locally the standard of English spoken is very good. The place is clean and well maintained. Mad Ronin is a Ramen Noodle Bar on Jln. Petitenget, Kerobokan. Crazy name but good product though not traditional, rather daring and exploring. Laksa Ramen combines with Singaporean flavours. Tongkotsu is a Pork Ramen with a rich broth base of boiled pork bones. The Chicken Ramen uses chicken thigh meat for a stronger taste. For vegetarians there is the Yasai Ramen, spinach noodles with pumpkin and greens. If you want you can add extra toppings of seaweed, Ajitama [soft boiled eggs] or Chasu. For starters the usual Gyoza [what could be better?] and super healthy Edamame, served hot and salty. If you want other than noodles there are also three Donburi dishes [rice bowls] topped with Roasted Chicken, Chicken Omelette or Chasu.

Strawberry Fields is an area in Liverpool, England and was a song from the Beatles but it is also a café on Jln. Batu Belig, Kerobokan. Breakfasts, [as healthy as you want to make them], Sandwiches and Salads the same. Exotic Burgers and a few mains are what are on offer here, and it seems to work! Vitality Bowls for breakfast, or just make your own. Strawberry Field [strawberry, banana, chia seeds], Dragon 2 [pink dragon fruit, chia seeds, coconut and goji berries] or Acai [acai berries, banana, strawberries and blueberries]. Salads are interesting, Cured Salmon with green tea soba noodles, kale, avocado and a white sesame dressing, very healthy! There is also a Chipotle Chicken Salad and a Caramelised Pumpkin Salad. The Burgers use Australian Angus or Wagyu beef. The burgers are not Aussie style with beetroot but there are many other options for additives; cheeses, crispy bacon, pickles, lettuce, onion rings, mustards and sauces.

Living off the grid in Bali by Anita While the concept of living off the grid usually refers to living without the support of an electrical grid and other external infrastructure, to many it is about much more than installing solar panels and setting up a compost bin. Living off the grid is about having a conscious awareness of how we want to live on this planet—and the resources we give, the resources we take and the resources we share. Among other things, this involves continuously asking the question of whether our actions support our selected standards—for ourselves, others and the planet.
C/Ho/G-16 August 17
Patricia Miklautsch, the co-founder of the Bali Silent Retreat in Tabanan, is a huge advocate of self-sufficient living and respect for nature. And she says that the so called living off the grid is not about discussions over a coffee, or taking a weekend workshop, but about taking positive action. “Even if it’s planting a few raised-bed vegetables and installing some solar lanterns. Anything is a good start,” she says. “If you frequent specific food vendors or restaurants for take-out, let them keep your containers and swap them when they deliver. And buy locally grown produce. We have a saying, ‘When I’ve traveled half way around the planet, I’m pretty darn tired. And I bet quinoa is too.’” Staying true to her roots — she was a proponent of sustainability when she lived in Colorado in the 70s — Patricia co-founded an off the grid retreat that can serve as an example to those wishing to make their lives more eco-friendly. “We use solar panels for our electricity, which we use sparingly — there is no air-conditioning, hair dryers or even electrical outlets in the rooms,” she says. “We have large solar panels on the roof that produce around 15 kilowatts of electricity, numerous smaller solar panels located around the four-hectare grounds, as well as solar flashlights and desk lamps that have to be recharged outside during the day. We have a PLN backup system, but we’ve never had to use it.” The retreat has an 150-foot deep well that produces enough clean and clear water for the entire grounds. While Patricia says that the water is drinkable right out of the ground, it is put through a UV light system and a reverses osmosis system just to make absolutely sure it is fit for consumption. “Years ago when I lived in Ubud, I partnered with a fish tank shop owner to make a solar water distiller. It was easy to make and worked well. But all that glass is too dangerous with guests. I have now given it to a friend who offers permaculture classes,” she adds, highlighting that eco-friendly solutions are within everybody’s reach.

It is no secret that Bali is drowning in garbage, with waste products often ending up incinerated or in landfills. Unfortunately, a lot of it also gets illegally dumped in the ocean or on unoccupied land. Patricia has created her own recycling process, which begins with a ‘garbage-in, garbage-out’ policy, where if, for example, a tube of toothpaste is brought to the retreat, it needs to go back out, preferably to the home country of its origin, to be disposed of there. Other waste is collected by the staff at the retreat’s Garbage House, where it is sorted into plastic, glass, iron and wood, and passed on to recycling collectors. “The small amount that unfortunately can’t be recycled must be taken to the landfill. The landfill bin’s designation is Stupid Garbage,” Patricia says. The retreat’s staff—all of whom are from the three local villages—the community and guests are also very much involved in Patricia’s off the grid project. The staff are not allowed to bring styrofoam or plastic bags to the grounds, and any vendors who deliver produce to the retreat are given reusable glass jars, jugs, boxes and bags. Plus, the guests are provided with bags made of newspaper for separating paper, plastic and landfill items. “We have also distributed 55-gallon drums throughout the local villages so that everybody has a place to put their garbage. Posted on the outside of these bins is an explanation on why and how to recycle, with a rather harsh description of the results of burning plastic,” Patricia says. According to Patricia anybody can incorporate living off the grid principles into their daily lives if they make a conscious and deliberate decision to do so. “Why not ask yourself, ‘Do I really need a swimming pool, air conditioning, 100 watt bulbs, big screen TVs in every room, restaurant size kitchen equipment, or is that my ego wanting a snuggle?’,” she says. “Why not give our egos a snuggle by challenging our standards and changing our lifestyles to help the planet help itself, and help all of us sustain ourselves well into the future.”

Bearing the Unbearable…When will this cruelty stop? She arrived on my doorstep at 3 months old, a bundle of fluffy mischief and joy all rolled up together. The street vendor, who had rescued her from some unknown destination, took me for the softie I was and assured me she would grow to be a very small dog. That first night she managed to escape the enclosure I had carefully purchased for small dogs to play in. Her climbing skills were evident from day 1, so when she managed to scale my 6-foot wall 1 year later, nearly landing on a passing motorcyclist, it shouldn’t have been any surprise! Yes, she had grown into a beautiful mix of Kintamani/Bali dog with large paws, long fluffy tail, and amazing jumping ability. Wire netting was quickly installed around my front fence to avoid any future escapades of this magnitude. But escape she did often, racing through the gate ahead of me looking for adventure in the streets. I always managed to rein her back in, and finally we compromised with a daily morning walk to the beach to catch up with her
friends, and explore the outside world.

‘And the World, Opening’ (4 February) For fans of classical music this is going to be a treat. Padma Resort in Legian will host its annual classical music event featuring Airin Efferin as the collaborative pianist, Michael Hall with the viola and Regina Handoko as soprano. Music from Puccini, Bach, Sukarian, Wiriadisastra, Hummel and many more will enchant the audience as this talented trio perform some of the best classical songs. The evening begins with canapés and wine followed by the show. There are discounts for musical school students, expectant mothers and Bank Mandiri credit card holders. Cost : IDR 300,000 Where : Padma Hotel, Legian Contact : 0812 3707 4172 dining.legian@padmahotels.com GIN Bali Walkathon (3 February) This is a charity event that is supporting the concept of Aquaponics which is a low cost, low maintenance, naturally organic vegetable farming and organic ¿sh farming system. It produces high quality, nutrient rich, organic food with a high crop turnover. The system can be built in small spaces and places where gardening may otherwise be impossible. It gives the orphanages selfsuf¿ciency, independence, and potential extra income from the highly valued produce sold at a local market. Many orphans in Indonesia are malnourished, with few nutrients in their food coming from the rice they eat at every meal. By participating in the 3.9 km GINBali Walkathon you will help raise awareness and money to build more Aquaponics systems for orphanages in Bali. A typical start up cost for one system is approximately IDR 10,000,000. The goal is to raise that amount to build 1 new Aquaphonics farm. You can go to the Facebook page below and click on going. If you cannot go and would like to make a donation you can do so via details on the Facebook page. We wish the organizers the best of luck and hope that more of these systems can be implemented to help those in need.

A very happy Chinese New Year to all readers who are celebrating this auspicious occasion. The coming year is the year of the Dog. The Dog is the 11th sign of the Chinese zodiac. Amongst qualities, the dog is honest, faithful, jealous and the most conservative. The dog is not a great traveler and prefers to take care of his home. If you believe in this then it may be a good year to plan to have a child or another major event. During the above mentioned dates, the Laguna resort’s signature Banyubiru restaurant will be offering a wide selection of Chinese delights including roasted Peking duck, Szechuan chicken, wok-fried salted egg prawns, crackling pork belly with hoi sin sauce, dim sum and desserts to make your mouth water. A live musical performance of Chinese classics will add to the ambience and take you on a journey into the culture of the Chinese. The Arnawa Restaurant will offer afternoon tea with Chinese sweet and savory treats coupled with delicious teas from 3 pm to 5 pm from 9 to 17 February.

32 Help my pet has been hit by a car! Road traffic accidents are one of the most common reasons pets are brought to Sunset Vet. In fact these injuries are far more common in Bali than in pet populations of Australia, USA, Europe etc because of a number of reasons. Firstly the amount of traffic on the road in Bali, and the tendency of dogs to dart out unexpectedly. Secondly the fact that so many dogs are free roaming, and not kept confined within a garden or yard. Many of these free roaming dogs are not in fact strays, but have owners who let them wander somewhat. The model of pet ownership here in Bali is very different from the West, which leads to these kind injuries happening more frequently. When a dog or cat is hit by a car or motorbike the natural reaction of the pet owner (or Good Samaritan who finds the poor animal on the street) is to be primarily concerned with wounds or broken legs. However wounds and broken legs are rarely life threatening, and it is in fact the ‘hidden’ injuries inside the thorax or abdomen that are of a far greater concern to vets who are triaging the injured patient. When a patient is first brought to Sunset Vet having been hit by a car or motorbike the most urgent aspects to examine are: a) Is the patient in hypovolaemic shock due to fluid loss, requiring aggressive fluid therapy or transfusion? b) Is the patient in any respiratory distress, in other words can he/she deliver oxygen to the vital organs and tissues (is oxygen supplementation required, and/or emergency treatment of air or fluid in the chest preventing lung expansion)? After those issues have been dealt with, the next issue to deal with is pain relief. Unfortunately in Indonesia, opiate drugs such as morphine and its derivatives are not licensed for use in veterinary medicine, which severely handicaps a veterinarian’s choice of pain relief drugs. Medicines that are available are non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs, tramadol and local anesthetic drugs such as lidocaine. Pain relief must given at the earliest opportunity, to optimize animal welfare.
c) Diaphragmatic hernia Being hit by a car can cause a sudden increase in abdominal pressure, which can cause the diaphragm to rupture. The diaphragm is a muscular organ that contracts to create negative pressure in the thorax so that air is sucked in. When this no longer functions due to a hole, the animal is forced to use its abdominal muscles to breathe. Furthermore, abdominal organs can herniated through the hole in the diaphragm, so that the liver, spleen and intestines are adjacent to the heart. This condition requires surgery as soon as the patient is stable enough to tolerate it. d) Ruptured bladder Sudden impact from a motor vehicle accident can cause the bladder to rupture. This may not be immediately obvious as it takes time for the urea levels to build up in the body to a point where the animal starts to show signs of kidney failure. Also the inability to pee, when the animal is not straining to pee, is something not noticed without a long period of observation. The lack of a visible bladder on an Xray is a useful clue but not definitive as an empty bladder in a healthy animal may also not be visible radiographically.
a) Head trauma During triage vets will perform a basic neurological exam to assess whether there is any evidence of raised intracranial pressure or brain injury. This can be an emergency requiring urgent administration of medication to reduce the pressure in the brain and prevent death or permanent disability. b) Thoracic trauma Breathing difficulty is a true emergency and the most common traumatic thoracic injuries are either pulmonary contusions (where part of the lung can no longer inflate normally due to being filled with blood) or pneumothorax, where air is trapped in the pleural space, preventing the lungs from expanding. Little can be done to treat the former other than oxygen and supportive care, but the latter urgently requires the air to be aspirated with a needle so that the lungs can inflate normally. Sucking just 20ml of air out is usually enough to save the animal’s life.

e) Hip dislocation A common injury in Bali Dogs hit by cars is traumatic hip dislocation. The hip is a ball and socket joint held in place by several ligaments. When these ligaments are ruptured the ball pops out and must be pushed back in within a day or so or else the muscle contracture makes it extremely difficult to fix it without surgery. If the hip can be popped back in (under sedation or general anesthesia of course), the dog usually wears something called an Ehmer sling for several weeks while the tissues heal, to stop it popping back out again. Some dogs will require surgery regardless. f) Spinal fractures When a dog is brought to Sunset Vet unable to move its back legs, the first thing the vet will do is a neurological exam to see whether the back legs are intact. The absence of deep pain is a very poor prognostic indicator – this is tested by pricking the dog’s back paws with a needle and looking for a response from the head end. The absence of any reaction suggests – if the mentation is normal – that the dog cannot feel the needle and there is likely to be a sever spinal injury. Xrays will then confirm this dreadful scenario, and the owner is faced with the difficult choice of nursing a permanently disabled dog with faecal and urinary incontinence, or euthanasia. g) Leg fractures
What are the most common injuries with road traffic accidents?
C/NV/U-21 June 17
Although broken legs are very painful, they are not life threatening to the dog and with time and money they can usually be fixed so the dog can walk normally again. At Sunset Vet broken legs are treated using a variety of orthopedic implants such as bone pins, plates, wires and external fixators. Usually budget is the constraining factor, particularly for street dogs. Sunset Vet offers veterinary services via their Kuta (24hr) and Ubud (8am-10pm) clinics. For further information or to make an appointment call them on 03619348915 (Kuta) or 0361975296 (Ubud), or visit www.sunsetvetbali.com or www.facebook.com/sunsetvetbali or Instagram: sunset_vet_bali

Searching for interesting, satisfying drinks without alcohol or a lot of sugar, I came across Shrubs. The name comes from the Arabic word for drink. These have been made in many cultures over eons of time. They’re simple to make and keep a long time in the fridge. Just add 1-2 tablespoons to a glass of chilled water or soda water, or use them in cocktails. Here are a couple of recipes but keep in mind you can do your own combos. I did a yummy one with torch ginger flower, pear, pineapple and thyme. Just keep the proportions to 1 cup sugar or other sweetener, to 1 cup vinegar of your choice, and 1- 2 cups cut up fruit and herbs.
Citrus Ginger Shrub Makes about ½ liter Ingredients: - 3 oranges, organic if possible - 2 lemons, organic if possible - 2 Tbl. grated fresh ginger - 1 cup apple cider vinegar or a combination such as half cider and half sherry - ¾ cup honey, granulated sugar, or palm sugar Directions: In a clean wide-mouth jar with a lid, mix the honey or sugar with the apple cider vinegar or combination of vinegars. Stir well until the honey or sugar is dissolved.

Wash the fruits well under running purified water. Using a paring knife or vegetable peeler, remove the outermost layer of the peel, called the zest, on each of the fruits. Try to minimize the amount of white pith removed because it’s bitter. Add the peels to the honey-vinegar mixture. Juice the remaining citrus fruit. You should have about ¾ cup of juice. Add the juice to the peel-honey-vinegar mixture. Add the grated ginger and stir well to combine. Put the lid on the jar and store it in the refrigerator for 5 days, stirring daily. After 5 days, taste, and if you’re happy with the flavor, it’s ready to use. If you prefer a deeper flavor, let sit an additional 2 days. Strain the shrub, pressing down on the fruit solids to remove as much liquid as possible. Store sealed in a clean, glass jar in the refrigerator for up to 2 months. The flavor will only get better as it matures. You can serve this with or without alcohol. Add 1-2 tablespoons of shrub to a glass, add soda water and ice. Stir gently or the soda will foam up and spill over. If you’d like a cocktail add an ounce of gin, vodka, bourbon or your favorite liquor. Strawberry Basil Balsamic Shrub Ingredients: - 2 cups strawberries, washed, stemmed and cut in half - ½ cup basil leaves, washed, torn by hand - 1 cup palm sugar syrup (https://www.baliadvertiser.biz/palm_sugar/) - 1 cup sugar - 1 cup balsamic vinegar - 1 cup apple cider vinegar Directions: Put the palm sugar syrup, sugar, and vinegars into a clean wide mouth jar with a lid. Stir until well mixed. Add the strawberries and basil, stir and close with the lid. Store this in the fridge for 5 days, stirring daily. Taste after the 5 days and if you prefer a stronger flavor leave in fridge 2 more days. When it’s ready, strain the mixture, pressing down on the fruit to extract as much flavor as possible. Pour into a clean bottle with a cap. Put 1-2 Tbl. into a glass of chilled water or soda water or use in a cocktail. Bottoms Up!!

For Forks Sake ‘Dr. Kris, I’m sure grass should be easy to grow I see it growing well everywhere except for in my garden. I only have a small patch of lawn with buffalo grass and it’s a constant struggle, even though I was told it is the easiest to grow, apparently not for me! A few months ago it was very dry and patchy and everyone said it needs more water and now after the rain it’s so wet I think I can see some sort of moss algae growing in it. The grass just doesn’t look good, it’s sparse and wilted but it has plenty of water from the rainfall which seems counterintuitive to me. Plants I thought would be hard too grow like cordyline and birds nest fern are easy, but as for the grass I have no idea where I have gone wrong? Any ideas? Ed, Jimbaran. Growing a beautiful green lawn which seems simple at first glance, has confounded many a dedicated gardener throughout the ages. You would think it easy given that grass covers 1/5 of earths land surface, from chilly tundra to warm tropics, flooded wetlands and dry deserts, lawns to bamboo and wheat to rice...yes grass seems to grow well everywhere, except in our backyards sometimes. Buffalo grass is a great all rounder for growing a lawn. It forms a hardy dense cross textured lawn that will cope in a variety of soil types from sandy to clay, also a wide range of climactic conditions, from cool to warm climates and even tolerate some shade. It easily spreads via runners and once established even the most vigorous weeds will have a tough time invading. Well cared for buffalo grass will choke out most weeds giving them a hard time getting a foothold in the first place. Perhaps the biggest benefit is its slow growing nature meaning less mowing and edging than other varieties. No matter which grass you choose it is still a plant just like any other, you still have to battle the natural elements, the weeds, kids, dogs, grubs and even the soil type. Even if you have all of that covered you look across the neighbors fence and their grass is greener...oh it seems like it never ends, fortunately gardening doesn’t!
Getting to the problem, it sounds like you have waterlogged clay soil. Clay is naturally compact with tiny pore spaces which makes it difficult for water to easily penetrate through to the deeper subsoil. Grass likes water but it doesn’t like to have constantly wet feet, unless of course it’s rice that you’re trying to grow. Any type of soil is susceptible to compaction over time wih heavy rain and constant foot traffic but with clay soil you’re already starting behind the eight ball. The foundation for a good lawn is the soil in which it grows. A waterlogged lawn is susceptible to root rot. Once grass is stressed it will appear sparse and thin, it is at this stage that the weeds will move in, and if moist enough algae and moss also. The combination of a constantly damp humid environment with sunlight is enough to promote their growth in your lawn. So now you’re batttling two problems the waterlogged soil and the moss and algae. Get Forking The first step is to aerate the lawn to allow the pooling water trapped at the surface to run-off and give your lawn some relief. Use a garden fork to loosen and aerate it. Fork around the lawn and work in some compost at the same time sprinkling it over the top soil. Clay is mineral rich but if you don’t break up the compacted surface then nothing will grow easily. If your clay soil is extremely heavy an addition of gypsum around the place will help. Gypsum is a white/grey mineral known as a clay breaker because it improves the physical condition of heavy clay soil. The result is better drainage and root penetration. Uptake of other nutrients will also be assisted by the calcium content of the gypsum. Generally, gypsum is best mixed into clay or heavy soils prior to laying turf. For an existing lawn that is suffering from compaction on clay, using gypsum can still help. First aerate the lawn with a fork, then spread 1kg of gypsum per sq/m and rake in. If the soil is dry, water after applying gypsum. Remember good soil structure will give you a great lawn. Moss and algae thrive in wet and humid conditions and in compacted soils with thin turf. An aerated soil will drain well, promote root
development, attracts worms and facilitates the absorption of atmospheric nitrogen into the soil. The best soil is loose with abundant organic matter, and has a texture that holds moisture well, yet drains easily. A waterlogged soil is a compacted soil, it won’t allow water to drain freely. If healthy soil is the most important ingredient, water is the most common problem. If you give the garden a good forking regularly thrown in with a sprinkling of compost and gypsum you should notice an improvement in water drainage, and a gradual recovery of the grass as well as the eradiction of the algae and moss. If the clay is just too hard packed and your making no progress it may be easier to strip the lawn bare and start from scratch, reworking the soil with gypsum and compost and then re-turf the grass. Extra Tips - Most turf grasses are sun-lovers so in heavily shaded areas it may be better to select another type of ornamental grass or ground cover otherwise trim the trees. - Don’t over water, the soil needs to have periods of dry so that the roots will search deeper within it, becoming well rooted in the process. - If it’s been raining don’t water the grass. - Take care with the mower. Never remove more than one-third of the green leaf blade at any one time. This can weaken the grass and cause it to dry out easily on hot days. The grass can be greener on this side of the fence, if only you’d get forking for forks sake ;)
