Fertilizing the Garden ‘Dear Dr. Kris, I would like to ask you about fertilizer available in Bali. A few days ago, we moved a few 5m-high palm trees from the area near our pond to the other part of our garden as their roots had caused the pond to leak. I wonder if they need fertiliser to settle in their new environment. Could recommend any fertilizer which can be found at roadside nurseries or gardening shops in Bali. Thank you very much in advance. Warmly, Sawako’ Palms or any plant for that matter will do well with nutritional supplementation to ease the transplant shock and promote new growth in its new location. Palms require manganese (Mn) and potassium (K) in a higher ratio than most other plants, a deficiency in either will cause yellowing or premature death of the fronds and a generally unhealthy plant more susceptible to pests and disease. Fertilizers - How to use them and which ones are best? In my opinion the best fertilizer starts with plain old organic compost, otherwise fish emulsion or seaweed kelp meal. Organic fertilizers are preferable because they feed the soil, the bacteria and other microflora that plants have evolved to depend on. Chemical fertilizers do not provide this important aspect. Organic fertilizer improves the soil over time whereas chemical ones have been shown to deplete the soil over time. Healthy soil is essentially food for the garden and as such is the key factor for procuring a beautiful greenspace! The easiest most beneficial thing to do is to incorporate natural compost into the soil by forking it in or top dressing it over the soil surface then watering in. You can usually buy 10- 20L bags from most small nurseries in Bali. Just walk in and ask for ‘kompos’ otherwise you can order it in anything from the trailer right up to the truckload if need be - the same goes for regular garden soil of various grades. When re-doing a lawn for example it is much more costeffective ordering by the trailer load and delivery is usually free. Nurseries around the Denpasar area will often have ‘kompos’ advertised on a small placard placed at the front entrance visible from the road, but even if it isn’t advertised even the smallest nurseries stock it, all you need to do is ask.

Another option is to use a specialized palm fertiliser which will have the correct ratios of the elements needed, specifically Potassium -K, and Magnesium -Mn. Never use lawn feed or nitrogen (N) rich fertilizer on palms. Ace hardware, Mitra 10 and the other home depot/ renovation style centres stock various types of specialist chemical fertilizer product categories, from lawn fertilisers to flowers, palms and fruit and vegetable specific. If any confusion arises always consult the label, ideally for palms look for a NPK ratio of around 8-4-12 with magnesium at a minimum of 4%. If you’d like to buy chemical fertilizers in bulk at better prices then the hardware store, ask around at the roadside nurseries. There are specialist lawn and palm outlets along Jalan Hayam Wuruk/ Jalan Hang Tuah - between Renon and Sanur. Fish emulsion is another good general purpose organic natural fertiliser suitable for palms, lawns, flowers, fruit and vegetables that can be bought at most large hardware/garden stores. Fish emulsion is a liquid fertilizer concentrate made from the by-products of the fish oil industry - generally mix about one capful per litre of water, and then apply direct to the garden with a watering can. This is the easiest and most cost-effective way to fertilize for the average garden in my opinion. Always follow the instructions on the label of any fertilizer, and never add more than advised. A problem with chemical fertilizers is that it is easy to over fertilize, in which case the roots of the plants can be burnt resulting in a dead plant, otherwise there could be too much new leafy growth at the expense of flowering. Chemical fertilizers are absorbed by the plants yet provide no net positive effect on the soil, they create soil salt imbalances and destroy beneficial organisms within the soil. Once you’re hooked on the chemicals they become addictive and the downward spiral begins, modern day commercial farming is the poster child for this phenomenon - over the long-term crops experience lower nutritional content, diminishing returns and are more susceptible to failure. The chemicals also pollute the groundwater that runs from the farm or garden back into the river system, resulting in higher nitrate and phosphate residues, which can then cause excessive algal growth and choke entire river systems - something I’ve seen plenty of times over the years whether in Denpasar or out in the countryside. Sometimes it’s gotten that bad it’s turned into a mining operation, bringing in the excavators, front end loaders and dump-trucks to remove the masses of algae that has choked the ecosystem, killed the aquatic life and literally brought the river to a standstill. Another favourite natural all round general purpose fertilizer for the garden is a homemade seaweed fertiliser. For ongoing maintenance of your soil nutrients and trace elements collect washed up seaweed at the beach when you see it, it is an invaluable resource for the soil. You can either incorporate it directly into the soil or otherwise make

a seaweed tea by infusing water with seaweed. Collect a small bag of seaweed, kelp or other marine plants that have washed up on the beach at low tide. Put it into a large container full of water, an old bin usually works well - then cover and leave to brew for a week or two in full sun. When the water has turned a dark brown colour, you have the seaweed tea. Simply pour it around the garden with a watering can. Typical ocean kelp provides 70 elements and a wide variety of plant growth hormones, it makes plants healthier and stronger, along with increased disease resistance. I have written previous articles on the joys of foraging seaweed for the garden where you can get a more in-depth insight into the science behind it. You can find these articles at The Bali Advertiser website with the links provided below https://www.baliadvertiser.biz/foraging/ https://www.baliadvertiser.biz/nutrient-soup-sea-minerals/ If you’re not a beach person and can’t find seaweed kelp fertilizer at the shops you can easily buy it online and have it sent to you, search for ‘kelp meal’. If your family goes through a lot of bananas as mine does try incorporating the peels into the soil around the base of the trees to provide a slow release form of potassium an essential nutrient for healthy palms, they also contain small amounts of nitrogen, phosphorus and magnesium. I recommend natural fertilisers such compost, seaweed/kelp or fish emulsion fertilizers because they are natural, abundant in trace elements and have positive effects on the soil microflora - the building blocks of the garden. Natural fertilizers are generally safer in terms of over doing it, and in combination with regular composting should eliminate the need for chemical fertilizer in the garden over time. If you’re a gardener in Indonesia I suggest that you add the word ‘kompos’ to your vocabulary - probably one of the easiest Indonesian words to learn and definitely the most beneficial one for your garden!

Let’s Paint the Dogs of War I once knew a bloke who to everyone’s surprise joined the army. He said he wanted to learn a trade. “And did you?” we asked. “Yes” he said. “Well what is it?” we enquired. “I’m a machine gunner.” he said proudly.

“Sire” “Yeeees” “What sort of paint should I use?” “Well this is a rock and on any sort of masonry (except freemasonry) a water based emulsion paint will do, perhaps even whitewash or Taro.”

A while later he was pleased to tell us he was learning a new trade. “What’s that?” we asked. “Well, you know the man who sticks his head out of the top of the tank.......”

“Stiffen the sinews, summon up the blood, Disguise fair nature with hard-favoured rage......”

Many people join the army to learn a trade. They are particularly good at painting, in fact they are experts. Take camouflage paint for instance. It is a little known fact that camouflage paint came about by accident. One day three privates were ordered to paint a tank, they painted the whole thing before they realised they had each used a different colour of paint. Then they couldn’t find the tank. Neither could the enemy. The army was so impressed they asked military intelligence to investigate and years were spent unsuccessfully trying to find out how they did it. Eventually military intelligence gave up and spent a fortune developing camouflage paint. It was not easy you know, they had particular difficulty stopping the colours mixing in the can. It’s good stuff though, recently I tried to buy some camouflage paint....... I couldn’t find any. Far more important than all this, however, is the fact that paint represents a foundation on which world military strategy is based. The whole of the military machine below commander level works to one basic philosophy: If it moves shoot it, if it doesn’t - paint it. This avoids that uncomfortable possibility that a soldier might think which, of course, could have dire consequences. Henry the fifth, for example, fully understood the need for a bit of timely painting: “Once more unto the breach, dear friends, once more, or close the wall up with our English dead!” “Er, excuse me your majesty” “Yes what is it?” “Perhaps we could negotiate.” “Negotiate?” “Yes, you know, talk to them about it.” “You see that rock?” “Yes sire” “It needs a coat of paint” “Oh yes sire, I’ll do it now” “Now where was I?” “But when the blast of war blows in our ears, Then imitate the action of the tiger:”

“Sire?” “What is it now?” “What’s Taro.” “Taro is a kind of paint those nice Indonesian people use. It is made from earth mixed with glue. It is cheap, covers well even on rough surfaces, it comes in a rather nice range of colours with a sort of earthy feel but does have a tendency to wash off in the rain. Worms in the can can be a bit problematical. Do you mind...” “Oh, sorry sire.” “Now set the teeth and stretch the nostril wide....” “Sire, I am having a bit of trouble getting the paint to stick.” “Look lad you have to make sure the surface is prepared properly. Rule number one about painting – prepare the surface, it should be clean, smooth, dry and with no loose bits.” “Thank you sire, you’re a brick.” “I beg your pardon?” “Sorry sire.” “Hold hard the breath and bend up every spirit To his full height! On, on, you noble English.” “Sire” “What” “It still won’t stick” “Look lad I am trying to make a speech, this is a very important speech that will go down in history.” “You don’t want me to paint the rock?” “Yes I do want you to paint the stupid rock.” “No need to be like that, I’m trying my best.” “I’m sorry, right?” “It won’t stick” “Look with emulsion paint on a porous surface such as concrete or plaster you need to water it down a bit, add 10% water and mix well. It will soak in and give a good key for a second coat.” “Second Coat?” “Yes, you will need at least two coats to give a solid colour. Now do you mind?” “Yes sire, I mean no sire, thank you sire.” “And you, good yeomen, Whose limbs were made in England, show us here The mettle of your pasture.....” “It looks a bit rough.”

“What?” “The paint, it looks a bit rough.” “That’s because you used cheap crummy paint. Pay a bit more and you will get a paint that will give you a good finish. A good quality average priced paint is Vinilex. If you want a really good paint that is easy to put on and really looks good you go for a better paint such as Dulux. Most of these paints are not good for outside use so for outside surfaces you need something like Dulux Weathershield that is water resistant and anti mould. Right?” “Right” “Let us swear That you are worth your breeding; which I doubt not, For there is none of you so mean and base That hath not noble lustre in your eyes.” “It still looks a mess.” “Oh honestly. Look the secret to a good paint job is to have tidy edges. You need a small brush say 1 to 2 inches wide and carefully “cut in” the edges. Then you use a larger brush to paint the body of whatever you are painting. If you are using a roller you should paint a good 4 or 6 inches wide strip around the edges with a brush so you don’t get the roller too near the edge.” “Roller?” “Forget I said that, they haven’t been invented yet, just use a brush” Mumbling “Look at me, the greatest monarch in the free world teaching some dickhead how to paint a bleeding rock.” “What was that Sire?” “Oh nothing. Now where was I, oh yes.....” “I see you stand like greyhounds in the slips, Straining upon the start. The game’s afoot! Follow your spirit; and upon this charge Cry ‘God for Harry! England and Saint George!” “Sire?” “Oh for crying out loud, what is it now Mr Constable?” “I don’t think I want to go fighting the French, I want to be a painter instead.”

Education & Family

Don’t be a fool….Feel your BOOBIES! Breast cancer is a disease that should make every woman sit up and listen! It is the most common form of malignant disease in women. It develops in approximately 15% of women by the time they reach eighty years of age, and it is the leading cause of death in women aged between 44-55 years. Men may also suffer from cancer of the breast; however the incidence is 100 times less likely than in females. PREVENTION In the case of so many diseases, prevention is the best cure. Even if women have an annual breast examination by a professional (and most do not), thus it still leaves eleven months of the year that you will need to examine your own breasts. The most common signs of breast cancer are a lump in the breast; abnormal thickening of the breast; or a change in the shape or color of the breast. Finding a lump or change in your breast does not necessarily mean you have breast cancer. Additional changes that may also be signs of breast cancer include: • • • • • • • •

Any new, hard lump or thickening in any part of the breast Change in breast size or shape Dimpling or puckering of the skin Swelling, redness or warmth that does not go away Pain in one spot that does not vary with your monthly cycle Pulling in of the nipple Nipple discharge that starts suddenly and appears only in one breast An itchy, sore or scaling area on one nipple

Breast Self Examination (BSE) Prevention and early diagnosis is the best tactic in combating this fatal disease. Breast self examination (BSE) is the best way to detect abnormality of the breast in the early stages. (Full instruction on BSE is available on the Bali Advertiser Website on a previous breast cancer article). • BSE should be done at the same time each month. • The best time is a couple of days after the end of your period, when your breasts are less likely to be tender or lumpy from hormone effects. • If you no longer have periods, choose a day you can remember e.g. the first Monday of each month. Remember: Only you can do Breast Self-Examination - no one knows your body better than you do. Always consult your doctor if you are concerned about any breast changes. He or she can conduct a thorough manual breast examination, and may recommend a mammogram (breast x-rays), and / or ultrasonic examination. The combination of the methods you use will depend on your age, your medical history and your doctor’s advice. KNOW YOUR RISK FACTORS If you have a higher risk factor of developing breast cancer, you should seek professional advise and make absolutely sure that you have professional exams on a regular basis. If you do not fall into any of the increased risk groups, it does not mean that you will never develop breast cancer! Risk factors increasing the incidence of breast cancer are: • Risk increases with age, the incidence being highest in the 45 -55 year age group. • Women who have family that have suffered from breast, ovarian, uterine or prostate cancer are at in increased risk. • Women of Jewish (Ashkenazi) descent have a two-fold risk. • Risk is increased in women who have suffered from cancer of the breast, ovaries, or endometrium. • The risk is increased by factors increasing the number of menstrual cycles, i.e. menstruating at an early age and menopause over 50 years of age, never having children and not breast-feeding. • Obesity is an increased risk.

C/E/G-22 May 19

• Incidence is increased in the higher socio-economic group. HELP A SISTER Living in a place like Bali, awareness and prevention for the local population can be difficult to locate…..so why not help a (local) sister. Yayasan Rama Sesana is an amazing service mainly for women, is led by women and is mainly staffed by women. They have grown from small beginnings rooted in Bali’s traditional markets and everyone is welcome to attend our clinics. YRS is a non-profit, non-government organization focusing on sexual and reproductive health since 2004. They have a wealth of information for women on breast examination as well as many other aspects of women’s health in Indonesian. You can help local women by giving them information about these centers, as well as making a donation to the clinic so as they can continue their amazing work. BOOMER CORNER Use it or Lose it -- Stimulating the Brain after 60 An early Boomer column ‘Mind Changes – When to Worry’ by Susan Tereba provided information on identifying dementia. The good news is that losing your keys is just age-relate memory loss, not dementia. We can actually delay memory loss and improve brain function indefinitely by adopting lifestyle changes and keeping the thinking box stimulated.

Playing games, especially those that involve memory and sequencing such as bridge and mahjong, are excellent for keeping the brain sharp. So are crossword puzzles.

‘Use it or lose it’ refers to all the equipment we were issued with at birth… physical, sexual and mental. Inevitably it will all start to degrade over time. Hip replacements and Viagra can address the first two, but once our mental acuity disappears it can never be regained. After about age 60 the brain begins to shrink in size. After a lifetime of gaining accumulated knowledge, it becomes less efficient at accessing that knowledge and adding to it. I’m personally very aware of this slow shift; the mental filing system isn’t anything like as efficient as it used to be. Several studies show a correlation between cognitive stimulation and continued cognitive health in seniors. Stretching our brains in new directions stimulates the grey cells and slows memory loss. Another important factor is social engagement. A study conducted by several leading cognitive scientists and published in The International Journal of Epidemiology found that participation in social activities outside the family may have a bigger impact on cognitive function than social contacts with family. Keeping your mind sharp is largely a matter of common sense: eat lots of vegetables, don’t smoke, drink in moderation, exercise, read, hang out with your friends, learn new things, don’t sweat the small stuff. First of all, don’t buy into the stereotypes of aging and memory loss. My mother drove her car until she was 92 and my grandfather was still beating me at chess well into his 80s. In Indonesia we are technically geriatric at 60; we’re not allowed to donate blood after age 60 or apply for a new credit card after 65.

There’s an undeniable connection between the brain and the body. If you exercise your body, your brain will benefit. Both high and low intensity anaerobic and aerobic exercise can be beneficial for brain health. Even walking or cycling for 30 minutes a day reduces brain cell loss and can also significantly reduce the risk of heart attack, stroke, diabetes and other tiresome diseases. Yoga is especially good because the mind is constantly engaged throughout the session. A word about yoga safety – there are many poor, even dangerous, yoga classes in Bali with large classes and under-experienced, disengaged ‘teachers’. Avoid flow classes unless you are very experienced. Seek a teacher who has small classes and pays careful attention to alignment and safety. Iyengar, Hatha and Yin are usually safe, slow yoga traditions with a focus on alignment.

Activate all your senses The more of our senses we use in learning something, the more of our brain is involved in retaining the memory. So try tactile arts like ceramics or wood carving, cook new dishes, guess the ingredients of the dish you are eating. Remove distractions De-clutter your house and assign a permanent place for your keys, eyeglasses, purse and other often-misplaced articles. Auditory discrimination becomes an issue as we grow older; sitting in a restaurant trying to talk to friends with traffic noise, a juicer buzzing, background music and other conversations going on around you can be very frustrating. Choose a quiet place to meet and don’t be afraid to ask the staff to turn the music down (tolong turunkan musik). Have an active social life

There are lots of things we can do to keep the brain agile.

Experts believe that social interaction requires us to engage areas of the brain involved in memory and attention, the same mental processes that are used in many cognitive tasks. Staying socially engaged may support brain health, and one study suggests that activities combining social interaction with physical and mental activity may help prevent dementia. So we can bundle this benefit along with mahjong, dancing and that moderate drinking mentioned earlier.

Challenge your brain

Repeat things

According to the Harvard Medical School, challenging your brain with mental exercise is believed to activate processes that help maintain individual brain cells and stimulate communication between them. Learning a new language is a full-brain workout and also involves social engagement. If your Indonesian is not fluent, find a teacher or a class at your level. Cinta Bahasa in Ubud is excellent. If we live here even part of the time, it‘s only polite to speak the local language as best we can.

Repeat aloud what you’ve just heard, read or thought about and write them down to reinforce the memory or connection. If you place one of your belongings somewhere other than its usual spot, tell yourself out loud what you’ve done. Don’t repeat reminders often over a short space of time but space them out for best retention -- remind yourself every hour or three. And don’t hesitate to ask for information to be repeated.

Remember when we were in our teens looking at older people? That generation of 65-plus expected to be old, so they mostly looked old and acted old. Our generation is very different. We are the Baby Boomers; not only are we not old, but we have attitude. I think that gives us an edge in the keeping-the-marbles department.

Exercise the physical body too

C/HE/U-15 Jan 20

Dancing is another excellent way to move the body and the brain, especially salsa, tango, line dancing or anything with complex steps. When we dance our brain releases endorphins, neurotransmitters that create a feeling of comfort, relaxation, enjoyment and power. Music and dance activate the sensory and motor circuits of our brain and also the pleasure centers. Listen to Music A study in the journal Neuron showed that listening to music may sharpen the brain’s ability to anticipate events and stay focused. I find choir very mentally stimulating, especially since I don’t read music and have to memorise the different parts (often in foreign languages) while managing breathing and voice technique and watching the choir leader. It’s a workout. Above all, perhaps, keep your sense of humour and find the light side in the darkest situation. When we’re down to our last few marbles, we’re going to need all the laughs we can get.

For Love of Man, For Love of Bali While Indonesia and the world must bravely deal with CoVid19, several events in the arts and local culture have had to be cancelled in the interest of public health and safety.

Bali’s own artists and art educators are thinking up great ways of keeping afloat, like Indra Geed Saputra who is selling tiny abstract canvases for buy-now prices. Check him out on social media #artgeedart.

The wonderful June-July Bali Arts Festival in Denpasar, so large it had to be canceled quite some time ago, vows to return next year.

TiTiAn Gallery is featuring a special exhibition of fascinating small figurative sculptures by Ida Bagus Punia Atmaja. 50% of the proceeds will go to CoVid19 Solidarity Initiatives. To view images, see the facebook page of Soemantri Widagdo, who has it all up on the virtual wall!

The already-postponed-until-June Ubud Food Festival simply won’t happen at all this year, but please pencil it in for April 2021. And August’s usual Ubud Village Jazz Festival is off entirely for this year, but show up NEXT August. Always a great local and international lineup of talent. Jakarta Biennale, normally planned for November 2020 is now slated for the second half of 2021. Jogjakarta’s feast for the senses which happens each July and August, ArtJog has been postponed until next year. Doesn’t this year’s theme, Time to Wonder, sound so moodelevating? Surely it would be a lovely thing to follow our time of dealing with CoVid19. Organizers and the ArtJog MMXX curatorial team have announced, since artists never stop creating, some sort of special edition of ArtJog is being worked on and will be launched soon. Can hardly wait to see what this is! Watch social media for updates. Museum MACAN in Jakarta, with a remodeled outdoor space, will not be reopening just yet. MACAN is part of the #museumfromhome movement. Joining collections like Taipei’s Palace Museum and a really wonderful array of famous museums and plenty of intriguing exhibition venues you’ve probably never heard of, visits can be made right from your computer or phone. Google it and go explore!

Music fans, please think of our Bali musicians , suddenly bereft of an audience, and without an income for their families. They have an appeal for their survival through www.theorchardbali.com There are also Crisis Kitchen Bali and Sole Men to consider for your good charity, maybe two of the most easy ways to make a contribution of food for families out of a job. Those are just three of the ways we can support Balinese people who have lost their income due to hotel, retail, restaurant and other business closures. So many good people are doing the right thing by staying home, so it’s a no-brainer to flow a little support to those who put public health before desperate and dishonest income solutions.

Restaurant & Food

Update Massimo has always been different. Not satisfied with

just developing Bali’s most popular Italian restaurant on Jln. Dana Tamblingan, Sanur, that carries his name. He baked Italian bread in his wood-fired ovens, established the most populat gelato range, even winning competitions back in Italy, Then came Italian cheeses and the most wonderful Semifredo. Now when times are tough and most restaurants are closed, and those who stay open are losing money, he refuses to close, preferring to support his large staff and their families by staying open. The smiling chef from Lecce deserves his high standing in the Balinese community and an example to all. Massimo the restaurant offers classic Italian, traditional to the core, rather than modern interpretations and fusion. If there at lunchtime you can watch the pastas being made up near the cashier’s desk, every day, a fascinating routine that shows the constant attention to detail at this restaurant.

there are American Sliders [3 mini burgers with coleslaw on a brioche bun], Jack Daniels Sliders [with a whisky bacon jam]. For a starter the Jumbo Combo is hard to beat [wings, spring rolls, tupelo chicken, onion rings and tomato bruschetta with honey, mustard and blue cheese dressing and the Hard Rock BBQ sauce].

Aperitif, the fine diniong restaurant at Ubud’s The Viceroy has led the way with weekend home delivery of a variety of 3 course set meals to the Ubud and Sanur areas. The mains include whole fish, chicken, lamb shanks, steaks and much more. Each weekend there are usually three 3 course set menu options, all affordably priced. You can even order beers or bottles of wine from their extensive cellar, to accompany your meals. Boy N Cow, Jln Raya Kerobokan may be closed for in-

house dining but you cam still purchase their dry-aged meats, with home delivery, from their Meat Shop. All the meat is dry-aged for at least 28 days. This includes grain-fed Black Angus [strip loin, rib-eye, porterhouse and even Tomahawk steaks of 1,000gm], Wagyu [Australian striploin]. Also available are 150gm hamburger patties.

Golden Monkey Express continues to deliver Chinese

cuisine to the residents of Ubud and surrounding districts from the Golden Monkey kitchen. The fare is mainly Cantonese [dim sum, chr siew, BBQ, Congee ] with a few exotics from other provinces [Peking Duck]. You can pre-order and pick up at the special entrance or have it delivered.

A La la! Is a French bistro in Umalas II [Jln. Bumbak, Gang

menu prices with home delivery to Kuta, Seminyak, Denpasar and surrounding areas. Their original burger is a steak burger with smoked bacon, cheddar cheese, onion, lettuce and tomato, special sauce on the side. Alternately

Biku has re-opened, Jln. Petitenget, for their famous High Teas but with the necessary reduced hours [10.30 a.m. to 8.00 p.m.]. They will even be offering a Special High Tea for the upcoming Mothers’ Day. Dandelion is an example of the new wave that swept Bali

over recent years. Cafes and Restaurants operated by young Balinese restaurateurs who have learnt their trade from working for many years under/with international professionals and have been able to absorb the resulting lessons. Owner Yunus is such an example. Back in the in the 80’s the main Influences on Bali dining were Australian, American, French and Italian, much as they still are today. Yunus started his journey through all four of such managed places, Australian FJ’s [Legian], followed by the original French Café Warisan, the very U.S. Hard Rock Café [at both the orginal unofficial version on Jln.. Legian and later at the official one as it now is at Pantai Kuta, then the Italian Pappa’s, also in Legian. Add to that many trips with America-Holland line and the ultimate dream of opening his own Bali restaurant in Canggu [Jln. Batu Bolong] became a reality. DANDELION is best described as user-friendly. It is almost as if you are visiting family. You will be welcomed by the family pets, as fluffy, friendly rabbits run around the garden, eager to be petted and fed. The menu is Balinese but with international touches and even a bit healthy [the fries are sweet potato]. They had to stay open for lunch during the epidemic if only to feed the rabbits. It is the perfect place to un-stress, snacking and sipping in the peaceful garden setting, playing with the rabbits.

Hard Rock Café is offering big discounts on their normal

Carik]. Not only is it still open for in-house dining [within the banjat restrictions] but it also offers a home delivery service from its menu. So if you live in the Umalas/Canggu area you can dine French, at home. Slow cooked Duck Terrines, The mains offer beef in many ways. Entrecote with Bearnaise, Tenderloin with Shiitake mushrooms, Steak Tartare or Beef Parmentier. Alternatively there is Lamb, Duck Leg Confot and Mustard Chicken. Seafood options are Tuna, tartare or tataki,

Limande Meuniere is a flat fish with lemon butter sauce, and the fillets of Mahi Mahi are with a pesto sauce and poached vegetables.

Alternative Voice The Expatriate Dilemma... Reluctant Home thoughts from Abroad The Bali expatriate community has a particular flavour all its own. Unlike Singapore, Hong Kong, Jakarta even, Bali is not a financial or commercial centre. Most foreigners who come here are tourists. Foreigners who come here to work and who have stayed for any length of time are here mostly in a travelrelated capacity. In the past two decades this has come to include people engaged in resort and property development. Another commercial sector would be those involved in the design and manufacture of exports, often in the garment and house and home fields. Bali with its vibrant artisan tradition has also become a creative hotspot for foreign designers and something of a shop window for Indonesia as a whole. Whatever the make up of the expatriate community its hard core comprises men and women of all ages, surfies to retirees, who have made their home in Bali because they have come to love the place and prefer it above all others. Anyone who has spent long periods away from the country of their birth take note of the costs and benefits of their nonresident stutus. For many such benefits are financial and climatic. The sun shines, there are blue skies, white sand beaches and you either pay none, or very little tax. The cost of living is low and you can afford help in the house. Add to that a local population that is by and large welcoming and possess a fascinating culture it is easy to see why so many foreigners are attracted to Bali. Of course there is a downside. It isn’t home and they organise things differently here, so get used to it. Adapt or move on. By and large that is what most people who come here do. The only real drawback to Bali is the level of healthcare available and that is improving. That said the question of individual healthcare is the one thing to which all foreign residents in Bali would do well to pay particular attention. All else is a self-indulgent quibble. Dealing with bureaucrats is a time-consuming pain in the arse in any country, as are dealing with the utilities. Don’t even get me started on that most post-human of

all recent innovations, the curse that dares call itself ‘customer service’. Australians of course are in the enviable position of having it both ways through sheer proximity to their ‘near North” while enjoying one of the world’s best national health services. Though quite how they need to square that with their tax obligations I couldn’t say. In short we expatriates make our beds and we must lie in them with good grace, accepting the passage of time and what it brings, until we must move on – some of us never do. As an expat, one of the things we inevitably come to see in time is how we don’t quite fit in back in the country of our birth. We are subtly different. They know it and we know it. Apart perhaps from family, we usually relate better and more readily to other expatriates of whatever nationality and in whatever country we come across them. Our own countrymen and women appear to us curiously insular, if not a bit dull, while their eyes glaze over if we are foolish enough to answer any query about where we’re from in more than a word. We don’t quite speak the same as they any more, something sets us apart and they don’t quite know what to make of us. The more blinkered of them consider us to be in some way disloyal and some of them would even seek to deny us the benefits of our citizenship and even pensions. All of this is par for the course and need not abash us unduly, for by and large we are out in the world and they are not. We retain most of our birthright, culture and upbringing plus whatever we have the wit and desire to take aboard of the other cultures in which we are free to immerse ourselves. That said, there are certain prices to be paid that become apparent over time that I wonder about and which nowadays I find increasingly matter. I do not know how much other longstanding expatriates feel about this, but it concerns me to find that I am effectively a political neuter. I do not mean by this that I cannot vote in a general election in my country, which is (for now) the United Kingdom. I can and have. But that’s about as far as it can go. In Bali, Indonesia or even Hong Kong, where I have right of abode, I cannot vote and as a guest in these countries I may be welcome, but not if I’m unappreciative, critical or ungrateful. In which case the locals not unnaturally wonder what’s keeping me here?

My dilemma then, and that of any expartriate anywhere - whether they feel it or not, is that without the standing to participate fully in the complete spectrum of political and social debate of our country of origin, we deny ourselves the right to address the burning issues of the day, issues which affect every one of us and generations to come. These issues are by now clear for all to see: climate change, overpopulation, nuclear war and economic inequality. They are essentially one and the same, and cannot be left unaddressed any longer if our civilisation is to survive. How we personally conduct ourselves does make a difference and is important, but - it is no longer enough. It’s too late for that. Enough of us need to join with other like-minded people and make a political difference at grass roots level. We can’t do that in a land where we have no legal standing. The only way we can make a meaningful difference in the world today is to take action within local communities making the changes necessary to address these issues in a way and scale that central government is forced to follow suit at national and international levels. The only agency that can bring about global change on this level is the national entity, that is for the majority of countries in the world going through such a bottom-up process. We know international talking shops can’t do it. We have seen the Great and the Good , the talking heads of our world, shamed by the stark clarity of a girl barely sixteen years old speaking truth to power. Something has shifted. I didn’t plan or want to go back to my chilly country of birth, but when circumstances permit, I may find I have to.

I have to confess that while I would never vote Tory in an UK general election I have no burning desire to record my vote since to do so is not going to make a difference.

Kulture Kid What does ‘siap’ mean?

I’m often asked, “Do you speak Indonesian?”and I answer, “Yup, both Indonesian and Balinese.” More often than not, the reaction is: “Ooooh, they’re two different languages?” They are indeed. And the word ‘siap’ is an example of just how different the languages can be. In Indonesian siap literally means ‘ready’, but it can also be a way of expressing agreement, just like saying “OK”, “I’m on to it” or something along those lines. I’ve noticed that siap has gained popularity in colloquial speech over the past few years and it has become a stock phrase, so much so that it has its meme variations like “Shiiiii-appp” heard on Indonesian comedy shows (and must be pronounced with the correct intonation and slightly effeminate gait to pull it off effectively). There are also spelling variants in messaging such as ‘siyap’ or ‘syap’ as well as siap komandan meaning ‘Yes leader / commando’ and siap bos meaning ‘Yes bos’. Indonesians love playing on the whole “big boss and lil guy” dichotomy, so this phrase is meant both literally and sarcastically (although sarcasm – it has to be said – is not an Indonesian forte and is often misunderstood). If you use repeat siap in short fire succession, siap-siap means to get ready. You can use it in the imperative too: “Siap-siap ya” to mean “Get ready.” Siap in Balinese has an entirely different meaning altogether: it means ‘chicken’! You couldn’t get much different, right? To those in the know, you can slip this word into a joke by saying: “Sudah siap, belum bebek” (I’m already ready / a chicken but not yet a duck) or asking someone, “Sudah ayam Bali?” to mean “Are you ready?” Indonesians love plays on words – once you’ve mastered Indonesian, and particularly Balinese, you can slip these word plays into conversation: they’ll love you for it and Balinese people will be impressed that you understand the differences in meaning of the same word in two completely different languages that most people on this island speak with ease every day.
