Gotong Royong! Are You With Me? To ensure Bali’s cultural survival, we are well advised to follow Joko Widodo’s request to help each other and work together (gotong royong). Deadlines are tricky things. As CoVid19 conditions change each day, a writer can’t know on March 26 what people on April 8 will be facing. This month’s Mala is a call to get with the program, help Bali survive, and be part of the force assuring Bali’s culture in years to come. I truly hope I am being redundant, that no one needs to be told how to deal with the pandemic. Flattening the curve in China, Singapore, and Hongkong has demonstrated that every last person following a government’s strictest edicts is extraordinarily effective. Being only “out for number one”, resistive of authority in general, or being apathetic and fatalistic, are destructive at this time.
dynamic; self-importance is a clash, to say the least. So while you are shut in and ordering Bali Direct sauerkraut, enjoying distance learning, holding online play-readings, gardening, and de-cluttering (clever suggestions given me by my readers), enjoy the knowledge that you actively assure that Bali will retain its great artists, its kind hosts, its caretakers and culture. Flouting the directions of this country’s president, ignoring the banjar’s health announcements, using your visa extension as an excuse to gad about the island like a moronic lout, and denying all the facts you’ve learned from the sources you are privileged to connect with, is the demise of Bali.
If ever there was a time to shed the lone rebel fantasy and embrace the Asian village mindset, this is it. Reader, kindly leave Indonesia by any means, if you are not prepared to obey Jokowi’s plea to work from home, study from home, and pray from home. No amount of finger pointing that some local is getting away with it, will justify your own selfishness at this time. You’ve heard it before: anyone not part of the solution is part of the problem. When it is so ridiculously easy to be part of the solution, those ignoring social distancing and hygiene may as well be holding a sign saying, “helping spread virus.” This whole situation calls for every foreigner to be doubly obedient and careful, to stay sequestered and practice excellent hygiene per the references below. Without such solidarity, Indonesians will justifiably blame foreigners for CoVid19. Do all you can to dispel rumor, and that starts by not forming crowds, by using a mask (a bandanna will do), and by practicing handwashing. A simple Om Swastiastu (wai hands gesture) serves just as beautifully as a hug. Remember, you know germ theory. And don’t pretend this island was built for you alone. The fabric of Bali is the group
Pencil in ArtJog, the lively, city-wide happening in July/ August, when all Jogjakarta honors its brightest young artists. Worth a week, this is also a great time to take in the bucket-list glory of Borobudur. Once we can gather in groups, ask your banjar about booking a local dance or music ensemble. It will not break the bank to have rindik players soothingly welcome your guests for a dinner, yet it greatly bolsters your village arts economy. Take future guests to galleries like TiTian Art Space in Nyuh Kuning, near Ubud, or John Hardy in Seminyak. Check out artist collectives like Lodtunduh’s Semar Kuning Cooperative. Music lovers will enjoy meeting visiting musicians at Omah Apik’s Fascinating Rhythm nights. Plan to explore cultural spots you’ve missed before, as they reopen. Resolve to shop at the smallest level of retailers you can dream up. Stop to visit artisans, perhaps for some Tabanan knives. Get a kebaya sewn by your nearest dressmaker. In the pasar, pick out the oldest lady selling produce. Spread money around in a way that is not wasteful.
Let’s have some goals and ideas about what we can all look forward to, if we now play by the rules and Bali emerges from the global pandemic with health and culture intact. When it’s safe to get out, consider getting over to Museum Macan in Jakarta. The pride of Jakarta’s art lovers, it’s a world class art destination, walking distance to good budget hotels. Make a weekend of it. They are part of the #MuseumFromHome global movement, so warm up now by visiting @museummacan on social media. Phone up a friend to strategize a future visit.
Shall we plan now for a better future, with routines and practices putting first the health of all living things? Now that we see how mankind can actually halt air and water pollution, our power is magnificently obvious. Get plans down on paper, tape to wall, and prepare! Because we are proving now that a culture and a people are really worth changing for. https://www.covid19.go.id/ https://www.cdc.gov/coronavirus/2019-ncov/index.html https://www.unicef.org/indonesia/coronavirus By Renee Melchert Thorpe Spreading art news? MONEY MATTERS Signs of Life at The End of The Tunnel Money Matters appears every two issues, hence one every four weeks. Just two issues ago our main concern was the growing conflict between the US and Iran and its possible impact on global business and investments.
has always recovered quickly. With no certain end in sight, it may take longer than usual to return to normality on this occasion.
By the time of the next article the threat had evaporated and a new, unexpected threat to humanity, the coronavirus, emerged from Wuhan in China, spreading quickly to South Korea, then Iran and a host of European countries, finally emerging early March with the first two cases in Indonesia. Soon, the epicentre moved from China to Europe and now it is the previously complacent US that is becoming the major focus.
Let’s look at some of the good news. Life is starting to return to normal in most of China, including the city of Wuhan, the Ground Zero of the pandemic. South Korea too has broken the back of the outbreak and is returning to normal. All this has been within a timespan of less than three months, which shows what can be done when a government and its people take a firm and disciplined approach. Given that the outbreak was first confirmed in Indonesia early March, a return to normality could theoretically be projected to early June. But much depends on the evolution of the disease and what actions are taken to control it.
Indonesia, especially (and surprisingly) Bali, have been affected very lightly compared to Europe and the US. Fears are that the statistics are understated as there has been very little testing, but the authorities are now imposing measures to try and contain any outbreak. There is a theory that hot climates are hostile to the virus but this is just a hope and is not backed, as yet anyway, by any evidence. In the meantime we have to work from home to the extent we can and sit it out. Ironically, Bali with its very few reported cases at the time of writing, is one of the hardest hit places in the world business-wise as it depends so heavily on tourism, an industry that has come to an abrupt halt across the world. Our hearts go out to all the readers directly affected and the tens of thousands of small traders and workers whose livelihood depends on the flow of millions of tourists. Bali, of course, is accustomed to handling crises that impact tourism such as bombings and volcanic eruptions, but
But return to normality it will
Given that travel restrictions are being applied across the world and many populations are in lockdown or confinement to home, there could be a considerable pent-up demand for travel and holidays. So for those in the industry it would be worth spending a bit of time planning how to meet the demand. If nothing else it will be something positive to address in place of the present focus. Brighter news on the investment front March was a savage month for investors and those with equity-linked pension plans. Trillions of dollars were wiped off market values, the greatest dollar fall since the Great Depression. But savvy investors looking at the long term see market crashes as opportunities rather than disasters. Here’s a recent quote on CNBC from Warren Buffett, the famous investment guru:
Further encouraging points: l

At the end of March the US markets gained over 10% on the news of the government’s $2 trillion spending package. If you are looking for the bottom of the market you may think you have missed out on 10% but we can expect more volatility, although the gain shows that the freefall we saw in March can be halted. As the package works its way through the economy we should see the results seeping through and with a bit of global spillover. The best returns tend to come from the point of greatest pessimism. Markets tend to anticipate and recover long before the economy. Despite emergency working arrangements it is still possible for expatriates to open an offshore investment account / platform and select investments at pre-bull market prices and which offer good prospects for future growth. The coronavirus is shifting the focus towards ESG (Environmental, Social and Governance). This implies that it is forcing people to think more seriously about the sustainability of our planet. For example, people will be more inclined to invest in alternative and sustainable energy sources and less into fossil fuel sources. While industries linked to travel and tourism have taken a big hit, other sectors involved in distribution such as Amazon or in entertainment such as Netflix are booming as a result of the current work-from-home advice. Shares in these companies can be accessed via funds specialising in the tech. sector.
The irony of the situation is that when the pandemic is over the Chinese economy will probably emerge much stronger than that of America. Perhaps a tribute to their leadership and discipline. Both China and South Korea showed how to control and overcome the virus, lessons that other countries do not seem to have learned. But learn they will, and at some point the corner will be turned. In the meantime the priority for everyone is to follow the rules. Stay safe!
‘’Now Coronavirus is front and centre but something else will be front and centre in six months, or a year from now or two years from now. The real question is where are these businesses (stocks) going to be in 5, 10, 20 years’ time.’’ Colin Bloodworth, Chartered Member of the Chartered Institute for Securities and Investment (UK), has spent over 20 years in Indonesia. GARDEN DOCTOR Lead Contamination in Soil / Improving Soil Hi Dr Kris, What a good article on soil testing thank you. My problem is all the plants that I’ve planted whether from cuttings or seed start off fine and grow, but won’t flower or set fruit, and after a short while stop growing and become retarded. I have fertilised with cow poop and chemicals with no difference. I really am at a loss as what to do next. Any ideas please. I’m now going to try your testing suggestions. Many thanks, Andrew. Dear, Dr. Kris, I’ve read that living near heavy traffic and main roads increases the risk of lead contamination in the soil and is it bad for vegetable gardening? What are the risks or ways to make an edible garden in this situation? Thanks in advance, Jan. The soil is where a good garden starts, and if you have a poor soil you likely be limited in what you can grow. The main factors that affect soil quality for growing flowers, fruits and vegetables depend on whether it is sandy which will mean it tends to dry too quickly, or if it is clay which means there is less aeration and a tendency to waterlog. Rejuvenating a poor soil is more involved then pouring fertiliser over the ground. Natural fertiisers such as cow dung and chicken manure need to be worked in along with compost over time to gradually improve the soil, otherwise try raised garden beds with a whole new ‘imported’ soil for an instant solution. As for lead contaminated soil which is sometimes an issue in urban areas, replacing the soil or amending it is also the solution. If you live near main roads, industrial areas or old buildings you would expect an elevated level of lead in your soil. A recent Australian study led by RMIT University, Melbourne, found that 20% of edible home gardens are contaminated with levels of lead exceeding the safety guidelines of 300 mg/kg - whereas natural background levels are usually in the range of 15-40mg/kg. The figure is worse in Sydney, where a similar study found 40 per cent of vegetable patches had levels of lead that exceeded the safety guidelines. I can imagine that a similar statistic plays out across gardens in most cities and crowded urban areas the world over. High levels of lead remain in the soil in urban areas - the result from adding the toxic metal to paint and petrol for decades. Living close to main roads is an issue due to lead accumulation in soils from traffic pollution. Vegetable gardens should be established away from busy roads - at least 20 to 80 metres away, lead levels are usually elevated directly next to main roads. In addition - generally the older the house, or any other building for that matter containing lead-based paint, then the more lead found in the surrounding garden beds. Most often areas most affected are under the dripline of the eaves due to the weathering and runoff of leaded paints throughout the seasons.
Lead in the soil presents a risk if it is either inhaled or ingested. Lead in the soil can also be absorbed by vegetables grown in it. Children who play in the garden are also at risk. If living near main roads, consider growing vegetables in raised garden beds filled with clean imported soil and compost. Limit potential exposure by avoiding plants known to be lead accumulators such as low-growing leafy vegetables like lettuce, as well as root vegetables including carrots, onions, turnips and radishes. As a general rule, the worst affected vegetables are either unwashed or unpeeled root vegetables. Leafy greens can be affected although much of this could possibly be surface borne dust. The least affected plants are those that produce fruiting parts - whether or not we consider them ‘fruit’ or ‘vegetables’. There’s very little danger of lead toxicity in anything from tomatoes to papayas and pumpkins and all fruit trees in general. Plants are fairly good at keeping lead out of themselves in most circumstances, but if the vegetables are covered in soil, or even an invisible layer of dust settles on fruit or leafy greens, you may be consuming lead from the soil in that way. All fruit and vegetables taken from the garden should be washed to remove all traces of soil before consumption. A good diet with adequate amounts of calcium and phosphorous has been shown to reduce absorption of dietary lead. Similarly, those same two nutrients help reduce lead uptake in plants. Seaweed and spirulina when eaten have also been demonstrated to bind heavy metals and remove them from the body. It’s not clear from the studies whether you have to eat them concurrently with the potentially contaminated foods or just every now and then - so to be safe just put spirulina on everything.
Any good soil will be ‘living’ filled with organic matter. Organic matter also helps bind the lead up in the soil, rendering it less available to plants. So, get composting, and adding it to the garden beds. Besides reducing lead uptake, it is also the key solution to a poor soil, producing healthier and more productive plants. Otherwise import a clean soil for an instant fix and a fresh start. I don’t think that there is a need to worry excessively about lead in the soil - just be cautious, be alert not alarmed! Wash your edible plants, mulch your soil, and work in compost and organic matter which will help to bind any lead, reducing the bioavailability but also improving the overall soil health at the same time. On a final note – Old-school paints were up to 50% lead and even with newer layers painted over the top, the levels of lead left contained on the interior and exterior walls of old buildings are still likely to be high. The safe level of lead in food is measured in parts per million so it’s easy to see how disturbed, crumbling, scraped, sanded or flaking paint can be a major source of direct contamination – whether from inhalation or ingestion. Please be careful when renovating your home. Have a professional remove flaking exterior lead-based paint to prevent future contamination.

Emergency Arrangements for Difficult Times In these challenging times, certainty and security go out of the window. We cannot predict what will happen; however, the worst-case scenario might lead to a breakdown of services and possibly a breakdown of law and order.
A chest freezer is a good idea to stock up on food for the long term but remember, if the power goes out, you may lose the lot.
package (Rp90,000 for 10 gig data and 10 gig Youtube), cheap and effective and sometimes works in places Telkomsel doesn’t.
Water Supply and Storage
Security
It is a good idea to consider the services we rely on: electricity, water, gas, internet connection and security. We also need to consider a breakdown of a vital piece of equipment that we rely on, what if we have a fault and a water pump stops working. A distribution pump we can work around but a bore pump could give us a difficult problem. For troubleshooting pump problems see here: https://www.mrfixitbali.com/water/water-systems/waterpump-problem-solving-220.html
Having PDAM (government reticulated water) and a bore well gives you two alternative sources, very useful should one fail.
I am sorry to have to say this, but it is important.
Doubling up on services is a sound approach so that, if one item or system fails, we have alternatives.
It is also a good idea to install taps to enable you to turn off the supply to toilets and other fittings so you can isolate problems such as leaks and so preserve your precious water. If your water pump starts cycling (turning on and off continuously) this means you probably have a leak and are losing water.
Energy If the power goes out, you will lose water pumps (bore pump and distribution pump) lighting, AC, pool recirculation. Having a generator, an off-grid solar system or a battery backup protects you if the PLN power goes out. For information on generators see here: https://www. mrfixitbali.com/electrical/electricity-supply/electricitygenerators-33.html If your power does go out, the first thing to do is to go and check the distribution board and the electric meter. If the large blue switch on the front of the PLN meter is in the off position, try switching it on. If it cuts out immediately, you know that the PLN supply is still on, but there is a fault in the house. Go to the distribution board and switch all the circuit breakers off. Switch the PLN blue switch on (it should stay on) then switch each of the circuit breakers on one by one, if one makes the blue switch off you know the problem is on that circuit. Switch all the other circuit breakers on so you only lose power on the one circuit. You should also check if you have overloaded the circuit by plugging too many things in once (especially air conditioners). Consider cooking arrangements and remember you may need to boil water for drinking if you run out of bottled water. Use gas for cooking but have electrical appliances such as a micro wave oven, electric rice cooker, water kettle, grill and jaffle iron so you can still cook if you run out of gas. Make sure you have emergency lights and batteries and the ability to recharge them.
Having a water storage tank gives you a buffer supply in case PDAM fails or the power cuts off. Set the tank high off the ground so it can “gravity feed” water to your taps and showers. Install a tap so you can draw water directly from your water tank.
If you have a water tank set above ground level it is a good idea to have bypass with a tap fitted to your distribution water pump so that, if the power goes off, you can open the tap and allow water to gravity feed to your house. It is also a good idea to have an electric switch for your water pump so you can manually turn it on and off in case of problems with the pump’s automatic on/off switches.
One thing that could happen is law and order may start to break down with opportunists roaming the streets looking for houses to rob or perhaps, as happened in 1965-66 and in 1999, people with a grievance wanting to take the opportunity to settle a score. We need to think about security, and the best defence is the community around you. People who live in a local village, such as I do, who have developed a good relationship with their community should find that this greatly improves your security. It is always a good idea to build a strong relationship with your local banjar. The next best thing for security is a reasonably sized dog with a deep bark but just be wary of people throwing things over the wall to poison it. Bars on the windows can be a visible deterrent for the opportunist thief but be careful, make sure that if someone gets in, you can get out. An idea is to put a “dummy” barred window at the opposite end of the house from the front door. This “dummy” window has bars on it like the rest but can be quickly and easily opened from the inside to allow escape.
Make sure you have a reasonable buffer stock of drinking water and gas cylinders and try and use them sparingly make them last. Using water filtration systems can make tap water clean, perhaps even drinkable, but make sure you have the most important item - a UV water steriliser to kill off any bacteria particularly Ecoli that can often contaminate your water from nearby septic tanks, animal faeces or pig farms. When boiling water, you need to make sure the water is actively boiling for at least a minute to kill bacteria.
If you live in an ostentatious house, you will stand out as a target, and it is advisable to check and double check your security arrangements with a safe area in your house and an escape plan. Don’t fight back; it is best to let people take what they want, so they will not hurt you or your loved ones.
Internet
In these troubled times, please take care.
At times like this, our internet connection is vitally important for news, communication and entertainment. It is a good idea to have at least two methods of connection. Indihome promised to provide high-speed internet, phone and television but, probably due to system overloading, has become less and less reliable. I have a Telkomsel Halo account for my phone with a data package added (Rp100,000 a month) which I find is far faster and more reliable than the Indihome connection. Another emergency connection can be a second phone with an XL data

BOOMER CORNER Balancing Hormones Naturally We hear so much talk about hormones as we get older and how it affects our health, especially for women. Hormones naturally decline as we get older. There are 7 types of hormones in the body: • Oxytocin (the love hormone) which responds to touch • Cortisol (the stress hormone) which tells us when to run when we’re in danger • Thyroid, (the metabolism regulator) • Melatonin (the sleep-inducing hormone) • Progesterone, estrogen and testosterone (the sex hormones) needed for a healthy cycle and fertility • Serotonin (mood-boosting hormone) • Leptin (the hunger-quelling hormone)
5. Exercise regularly – It doesn’t matter what form of exercise you choose – gym, running, yoga, kick boxing, walking on the beach or jumping on a trampoline. Just get your body moving for good cardiovascular health and keep it stretched. You’ll look and feel younger and healthier.
phase. Seeds such as flaxseed and pumpkin seeds, one tablespoon each per day, can naturally increase your estrogen levels. From Day 15 to Day 30, or the second part of the cycle (also known as the luteal phase), the corpus luteum begins to release progesterone. This sex hormone will help thicken the uterine lining and prepare it for implantation. The high content of zinc in sesame seeds and vitamin E in sunflower seeds have been shown to stimulate progesterone production. By adding one tablespoon of sesame seeds and one tablespoon of sunflower seeds per day in the luteal phase, they can naturally support the body to produce more progesterone.
How do you know you’re out of balance? If you’re experiencing any of the following symptoms it’s probably time you take action to bring balance back to your body. Signs of hormone imbalance include: • Mood swings • PMT or PMS • Low mood or depression • You are snappy, irritable and angry (sometimes all at once) • Your libido is non-existent • Your periods are heavy or irregular • Headaches and migraines • You have a muffin top or excess weight around the belly • Skin breaks out • Vaginal dryness • Cold hands and feet, • Difficulty sleeping or staying asleep • You feel constantly fatigued or have brain fog • You have tummy cramps, bloating or digestive woes • You have excess hair on your face and thinning on your head • You have cravings for carbs, sugars, alcohol or other foods How to balance your hormones naturally
6. Consume healthy fats – This has been shown to reduce insulin resistance in overweight people and those with diabetes. Dairy fats and monounsaturated fat in olive oil and nuts increase insulin sensitivity. Avoid unhealthy trans-fat which promotes fat belly. 7. Avoid over or undereating. - Consuming too many or too few calories can lead to hormonal imbalances. Aim to eat at least 1,200 calories per day for optimal health. 8. Eat fatty fish - Long-chain omega-3 fatty acids may help lower cortisol and epinephrine, increase insulin sensitivity and decrease insulin levels in obese and insulinresistant individuals. 9. Get high quality sleep consistently - Poor sleep has been linked to imbalances of many hormones, including insulin, cortisol, leptin and growth hormone 10. Consume a high fiber diet - High fiber intake has been linked to improvements in insulin sensitivity and the hormones that control hunger, fullness and food intake. 11. Eat more eggs - Eggs are extremely nutritious and may help reduce insulin resistance, suppress your appetite and make you feel full. WOMEN Magdalena Wszelaki, an integrative hormone and nutrition expert, is the founder of Hormones Balance, a practice that teaches women how to rebalance hormones with her book called Cooking for Hormone Balance. Going on the premise of food being medicine she has developed the concept of using seeds to correct hormonal imbalances with a 30 day lunar cycle to support the menstrual cycle. This works for women who are premenopausal as well as post-menopausal.
1. Nourishment for your body – Food is the building blocks for hormones by eating healthy fats and protein. Reduce processed foods and refined sugar and refined carbs. Eat an adequate amount of protein for each meal. 2. Eat More Greens – Green leafy vegetables like spinach, kale and chard help to cleanse the body and support the liver, which is very important in hormonal balance. 3. Reduce coffee consumption – A good cup of coffee is a joy, however, many people over indulge which increases PMS symptoms. Try drinking green tea which is lower in caffeine and high in antioxidants. 4. Reduce your stress – A busy lifestyle and running around makes our body produce too much cortisol (the stress hormone). This puts a strain on your body and can put your hormones out of balance. Try mediation, yoga, deep breathing and massage to manage your stress levels.
The technique is called “seed rotation,” and can be used to boost estrogen levels in the first part of our cycle and progesterone levels in the second part. This system can be used by anyone who is experiencing irregular periods, heavy flows, substantial PMS, signs of hormone imbalance and even women going through perimenopause and menopause. Which seeds should be used in the cycle? Peri-menopausal and menopausal women can start any day and rotate the seeds every two weeks. Pre-menopausal women who are still menstruating have different needs: From Day 1 to Day 15 (or the middle of the cycle), we need more estrogen in order to build up our endometrium (uterine lining). This is called the follicular
C/HE/U-15 Jan 20
Who are menopausal and post menopausal? If you do not have a cycle either because you are not menstruating or because you have entered perimenopause, menopause and you are in post menopause, seed rotation can still help. MEN Testosterone levels in men dip by about 1 percent every year after age 30. Eat pumpkin seeds. Pumpkin seeds are high in antioxidants and other nutrients that can contribute to healthy testosterone levels and improve overall health. • Full of Valuable Nutrients • High in Antioxidants • Linked to a Reduced Risk of Certain Cancers • Improve Prostate and Bladder Health • Very High in Magnesium • May Improve Heart Health • Can Lower Blood Sugar Levels • High in Fibre • Improves sleep. For example, lack of sleep can lower your testosterone level. Men who get less sleep for even just 2 weeks can see their testosterone level decrease by 15 percent. Beauty & Health Endymed at The Bodylab Kim Kardashian’s favourite non-invasive facelift treatment is now available in Bali at the Body Lab with the latest equipment using RF (radio-frequency) for the strongest effects for skin tightening called EndyMed, which can now treat you without pain and requires less treatments. I went to the Body Lab and was a bit surprised that a staff member approached me with a thermal gun and pointed it at my forehead to make sure I didn’t have a fever. Negative! No Coronavirus. I could enter. After checking in at reception I waited a few minutes in their chic waiting lounge looking at the posters for various treatments available. Then a therapist named Desy approached me and escorted me upstairs to a white room with a bright pink blanket on the treatment bed. Looking around, everything was clean and sterile.
She asked me to lie down and said that the treatment would last about one hour. She wrapped my head in a mesh hat and began cleansing my face. I stretched out and relaxed. She applied some aloe vera gel under my right eye, asking me to keep my eyes open. Then she gently glided the EndyMed device over the skin, which made beeping noises. There was no pain or discomfort. After several minutes she removed the gel and applied some gel above the eye. Then she used the devise on the forehead, cheeks, jawline and finally the neck. After she had finished one side of my face she asked me to sit up and look in the mirror to compare the two sides of my face. There was a little difference, the treated side was firmer and smoother looking skin. I could now lie back down and have the other half of my face worked on. I had had radiofrequency treatments in the past, which were sometimes very hot and bordering on painful. But with the EndyMed, there was no discomfort and I drifted off to a light sleep. It takes a few days for the full effect to take place and
because it’s accumulative a few treatments are recommended for long lasting results for a year. Usually five treatments are suggested 5 to 7 days apart. I couldn’t wait to see my face after a month. Desy advised me not to put cold water on my face for the remainder of the day and the following day to wear sunscreen and avoid sunbathing. EndyMed is the most advanced radio frequency technology on the market for rejuvenating the skin on areas of your face, neck, chest, and body. It uses focused radio frequency to improve the texture of your skin. The procedure works by emitting heat into the dermis, which triggers the skin’s natural healing process of collagen renewal. The result is skin that looks visibly revitalized and renewed, with improved elasticity. The results are instant with long lasting effects. Different from traditional laser treatments, EndyMed’s radiofrequency technology is not affected by skin color, making the procedure safe for everyone. Using the 3DEEP ™ Skin Science, the EndyMed system offers real-time measurements that ensure the exact energy level is delivered during treatment, based on the patient’s skin type, thickness, and desired results. EndyMed’s phase-controlled radio frequencies are safe and effective for tightening and toning lax skin on the face, neck, and body, as well as eliminating isolated areas of cellulite. The unique system also provides excellent skin resurfacing capabilities for acne scars, quickly restoring a refreshed and rejuvenated appearance. EndyMed is approved by the FDA as a safe and trusted method for improving lax, crepey skin and contouring areas of the face, neck, and body. The treatment does not require any incisions, so there is no downtime necessary and minimal risk for complications to occur. Patients are back to their usual routine the same afternoon after a EndyMed treatment with some residual redness, which fades by the following day. Immediately after treatment, the target area may look tighter and more lifted. However, the full results from EndyMed will take several weeks to appear, as the body’s production of collagen is slowly restored. Multiple EndyMed treatments will be required for optimal results. Most patients will see
maximum skin tightening and smoothing results, clinically proven to reduce wrinkles and fine lines after five treatments, spaced approximately one to two weeks apart. Benefits of EndyMed: - Reduce wrinkles and lines in the face, around the eyes and mouth - Improve contour of the face, neck, and body - Tighten and lift loose, lax tissue - Improve cellulite - Refresh and resurface tissue If you’re not pleased looking at the face in your mirror, then it’s time to change the way you look by going to Body Lab and coming home feeling happy. Wonderful services with highly trained staff. The newly renovated clinic is more spacious in a clean chic style. Kulture Kid What is The Role of Animals in Ceremonies And Ritual In Bali?
Animals, dead or alive, are an essential part of any ceremony in Bali. Unlike their Hindu counterparts in India, very few Balinese Hindus are vegetarian or vegan, and animal products are on the menu at all ceremonies. Meat includes chicken, duck and goat, as well as pig’s blood if red lawar is served. Preparation of animals for slaughter, the slaughter process and the cooking is all the men’s duty. Once an animal has been selected to be on the menu, it is brought to the ceremony location and slaughtered outdoors, normally by the roadside (so the blood washes into the gutter). Animals are not slaughtered according to what we would standard slaughter procedures and not in a halal manner (especially since pigs are a favourite in Balinese cooking). Balinese have a penchant for suckling pig (babi guling) as well as pig entrails (urutan). Offerings for smaller ceremonies (coming of age rituals, such as tooth filings and three- or six-month ceremonies for babies, as well as weddings) always include cooked meat such as chicken and duck.

At temple ceremonies, sacrifices of smaller animals such as ducks, chickens, roosters and baby chickens are necessary to complete certain rituals that include offerings to the underworld. You will see the animals tied up or held in small bamboo cages for hours, sometimes days on end “waiting their turn” to be ritually sacrificed. They are presented to the underworld and the lay priest officiating the ceremony will break the neck of the small

animals, such as a chick, as he completes his mantras. Tabuh Rah is the name of the ritual spilling of animal blood for cleansing rituals (mecaru). Restaurant & Food
Update Sardinia Café is so different from the rest, it is operated
by local professionals which is probably why it was one of the first to both open at the Beachwalk Mall and be busy. Situated in a prime position facing Pantai Kuta, at the front entrance, it offers simple Italian and International, snacks and light meals, at very budget prices. Comfort food at comfort prices! Open early for breakfast they offer an Eggs Benedict that is true to its name unlike so many bogus versions on offer elsewhere throughout Bali. English muffins are split and toasted, topped with ham [from the pig not a pretend ham] and some English spinach borrowed from the Florentine, and perfectly poached eggs [firm white, soft yolk] liberally covered with a thick tasty hollandaise sauce…simply good! Being Italian the pasta and Pizzas are excellent, in fact you can create your own Pizza by selecting all of your favourite ingredients for the topping [pictured].
a Balinese sambal. From Malaysia a Nonya Laksa, egg noodles in coconut milk with prawns, fish cakes, tofu and boiled eggs. The 12 hour slow cooked Vietnamese Pho is a standout, and Beef Shanks are used for that ambrosial Thai Masaman from the Muslim south. Minced chicken with holy basil served with rice and a fried egg, that is Lantern’s take on the classic Thai Kra Pao. From India, there is a Beef Vindaloo and a Daal from the north. For dessert, what better than a Coconut and Pandan Crème Brulee.
Folk is on Jln. Monkey Forest in central Ubud yet offers a
swim-up bar. There is an entrance fee if you intend to swim [includes a towel] and a latger one for a sunbed area of up to 4 persons [includes plates of snacks]. The restaurant has been operatig for quite some time but to the rear of it has been added this pool bar area [what used to be one of the many Spas operating by Paris]. The food is diverse; smoothie bowls, cumin spiced pumpkin sandwich and a wide variety of salads. The soft shell crab burger is one of Folk’s most popular dishes.
Tiflis was Bali’s first Georgian specialty restaurant, although the old Slavyenka did do some Georgian dishes on their all Russian menu. It is found in Umalas II and judging by the language spoken by its customers the food must be very traditional. Special on Thursdays are those Georgian Dumplings, Khinkali. Also popular is the Lobiani ‘pie’, two thin layers of Georgian unleavened flat bread have a mixture of red bean and herbs sandwiched inside before baking in the oven. Georgian Dolma is so different from all the Greek and Middle Eastern variations. Finish with their homemade Chocolate Eclairs with hot thyme tea! Lantern does Asian street food. It is located on Jln. Raya
Petitenget. Their menu offers many great ideas for snacking whilst sipping, light or full meals. Simple snacks include their great Crispy Pork Belly Bites, done in tamarind with coriander. The Korean Chicken Wings are tangy and tasty, a touch of Thai with the Fish Cakes and Pandan Chicken and a couple of local dishes; Sate Babi and Tiger Prawns in
Herb Library on Jln. Jembawan, Ubud, specializes in raw
food, but there are other options. Breakfast can be a healthy Banana Smoothie Bowl [with strawberries, and granola added], or a White Oat Porridge, but there are egg dishes if you want to be more traditional, Omelettes or Poached, with mushrooms added. that are purely vegetarian; Green Pea with mint, Green Gazpacho, a Carrot Bisque with ginger, galangal, turmeric, kencur and coconut milk, Lentil or Pumpkin and Ginger. Salads, rice and noodle dishes and some interesting Bowls; Nasi Kuning [Yellow coconut rice, fine bihoon, vegetable noodles, seasonal greens with coconut, fermented soybean cake bacem, savory corn cake & tomato sambal condiment], Tex Mex [Brown rice, tomato coriander salsa, flour tortilla, refried bean, sliced avocado, jicama, broccoli florets, fetta cotija and sweet corn on the cob]. Non-veg dishes include a Chicken Teriyaki, Udang Tesuni, Ayam Sambal Matah, and Tuna Lalah Manis.
Gypsy is found on jln. Munduk Catu, Canggu and is the home of Canadian Chef Robin Filteau-Boucher. Open all day, breakfast can be toast many ways [French, avocado, eggplant or eggs], or eggs the usual way with roasted potatoes or Hash Browns actually made on site. Or you can have Smoothie Bowls of goodness. Later dining can commence with a cold Green Pea soup made with coconut water, followed by Tuna Tacos or Tuna Tartare wrapped in rice sushi-style. Something different? A crispy Bacon Roll or a SLOPPY jack, pulled jackfruit tossed with BBQ sauce, coleslaw, avocado and cashews. There is also a Kids Menu with small serves. Refreshingly different! Shisha Café has always been a popular spot. Years ago it moved to Jln. Sunset from its original Legian location, but its customers have followed in droves. Middle Eastern cuisine accompanies the shisha pipes. Maraq is the traditional soup to start, full of vegetables and your choice of chicken or lamb in a very spicy broth into which you dip the great fire-baked bread, or for the health conscious there is the thick lentil soup Shorbat Adas The Shakiya is the star of the mains, a Lamb Shank cooked in yoghurt. Lamb Mandi is a dish from Yemen, combining rice with meat. By Gerry Williams

STARS WITH VIBHUTI HOROSCOPE APRIL 08 - APRIL 21, 2020
The Full Moon as we begin this month’s forecast, highlights and emphasises the Jupiter/Pluto conjunction of the beginning of April, as well as the meeting of Saturn (freshly in the sign of Aquarius) and Mars. The call to responsible action has been strong with the need to protect our communities and humanity at large, while Jupiter has brought optimism and growth as we evolve through this current round of evolution and transformation. Mercury moves into the sign of Aries and both it and the Sun will make a square to those sensitive points in Capricorn and Aquarius through April. The Sun moves into Taurus on the 19th and is joined by the Moon on the 23rd for our New Moon cycle. With the Sun, Moon and Uranus in square to Saturn, all in fixed signs, we are sure to see some tension as ideas, beliefs and radical manoeuvres unsettle the status quo. Restrictions will continue, but not without stubbornness and protest. Arguments are sure to erupt now as tempers flare and it’s probably a good idea to find healthy outlets for your pent up emotions and frustrations. On both the personal and collective level, we will be grounding our deep feelings about finances, government, authority structures and family and moving towards a more compassionate way of functioning. We are coming to the end of the Nodes being in the Cancer/Capricorn axis and we move from feeling those deep emotions to integrating them mentally as the time to express is almost upon us, as we shift into the Gemini/Sagittarius polarity. Things will start to move by next month, although a sense of chaos prevails. FULL MOON 18 Libra 44 April 8, 2020 10:36 am NEW MOON 03 Taurus 24 April 23, 2020 10:27 am
Those Aries with birthdays between the 10th and 20th of April are in for a bigger than usual year, with these current dynamics affecting you personally and more deeply. How you navigate this transformation is always up to you, although the more willingly you go towards change and taking your role with a sense of purpose and responsibility the less painful it will be. Of course others will annoy you and you must remain true to your nature, even if this means a little healthy debate ensues and you continue to be spontaneous and unpredictable. It’s time to assess your personal values.
Although the beginning of the month brought with it, some unsettled emotions and a lot of conflicting information you will begin to settle into a routine that is both financially and emotionally rewarding by the later part. Your health and daily routine was in much need of transformation and no doubt with the recent commitment within your primary relationship you’ve become active in a new and exciting way. With the New Moon business or work opportunities are sure to come your way and probably from an unexpected or unusual source. It’s time to come out and share your skills and talents.
Almost the beginning of a New Solar Year as the Sun uncharacteristically bursts into Taurus this month. You are feeling a streak of independence and an uncommon urge to be more active and proactive on the important issues in your life and affecting your community. Hidden agendas or ulterior motives could unsettle you, particularly when they come from previously trusted institutions and groups. Health concerns early in the month come to a resolve as you harness your personal power and authority by the New Moon. There’s a new sense of self being born into the World and you are excited.
You’ve been fighting a tough battle of late and soon there will be light at the end of the tunnel as you are brought to a higher level of functioning in the World and bringing those you interact with to that same level of performance. It’s because you care, that you do what you do and as you go through this magnificent transformation and rebirth with a new and improved self identity, others may feel threatened. No need to take this personally, it’s all a part of the process. Elevate yourself through the new model and soon this discordance will end.
There is continuing tension for those with late degrees of Capricorn in their birth chart and particularly at the trigger points, like the Full Moon at the beginning of the month and then by Mercury and the Sun at mid to later month. Conflicted points of view bring argumentative relationships and particularly with family members. You may want to reconsider what you’ve always regarded as the stock standard truth and modify your stance a little. It’s time to get creative and allow a new self image to emerge. There’s a new routine or new work about to begin.
Your creativity has been activated and you will further that this month as you dive into your subconscious and more imaginative parts of yourself. There will be a movement away from the herd as you prefer the isolation and contemplation to the discordance of the masses. Your transformation is very deep and not easy to articulate, even for you. This may change as the North Node moves into Gemini and you naturally feel the need to express yourself. It could be that a new body of study or a teacher is coming your way to expand your reality and time-line.
Full Moon in your sign at the beginning April brought some light to your personal needs as opposed to those of the significant other. As you transform early life imprints and patterns you may experience some conflict, but let this not deter you. Arguments can be a good way to clear the air and make way for the next cycle of yes you got it, even deeper transformation. You are shedding layers now and as you do life becomes more exciting in these most challenging of times. Soon you’ll be moving away from a focus on vocation to one of higher learning.
Saturn is the co-ruler of Aquarius and with that you will be feeling guided to take on a new role in your daily life. It’s time to take action or at least the first steps in the current project. You will get to reassess things during the year, but this is the introduction into a new 29/30 year cycle which will see you at the forefront of current global changes. Some will do it through media and communication, while others are a little more tactile with hands in the literal dirt. Your transformation lays beneath the surface and felt in the recesses of your own isolation.
There will be a shift of focus from family and home to friends and groups this month. It could be that you will join with others on some group projects and harness the power of collective resources. As your relationships transform and everyone feels the need to share their opinion, growth can take place as each in their turn adapts to the changing circumstances. You may find yourself working behind the scenes over the next year and half and quietly networking and co-ordinating from the more subtle realms. As a natural intuitive it is easier for you this way.
Communication and movement, are your two main focuses. Even at the behest of others, you will do what you want, when you want and how you want. At least for now. You may succumb to the needs of the family by the time the New Moon comes around as there is much to be gained by taking personal responsibility in co-operation with others, particularly those in your care. These coming months will bring more detailed and concise work for you, deeply engaging your mental faculties. Past talents and skills are resurfacing at the soul level.
Your mission now is bring through the unseen realms or higher dimensional information to ground new ideas and visionary impulses. The global community is your home and with the aid of technology it is easy for you to traverse it’s multi-faceted realms. Although others may wish to hold onto their old beliefs or projections on the World, there is no reason for you to perpetuate the storyline. Your thinking is inspired now, so let it flow through you and soon it will be time to share it with your family, large and small. Multi-tasking is the name of the game.
Finally you’ve opened into the next level of understanding and as it continues to unfold you will be able to act on your new or modified beliefs. This may mean a restructuring of your day to day routine or the work that you do. It could be a need for grounding on a practical and bodily sense. Because you are one who is more apt to tell the truth, as you see it, conflict of opinion is no stranger to you and so the current rebellious environment isn’t too uncomfortable. Relationship is going to be your main focus over the next 18 months.

Alternative Voice The Expatriate Dilemma... Reluctant Home thoughts from Abroad The Bali expatriate community has a particular flavour all its own. Unlike Singapore, Hong Kong, Jakarta even, Bali is not a financial or commercial centre. Most foreigners who come here are tourists. Foreigners who come here to work and who have stayed for any length of time are here mostly in a travel-related capacity. In the past two decades this has come to include people engaged in resort and property development. Another commercial sector would be those involved in the design and manufacture of exports, often in the garment and house and home fields. Bali with its vibrant artisan tradition has also become a creative hotspot for foreign designers and something of a shop window for Indonesia as a whole.
time is how we don’t quite fit in back in the country of our birth. We are subtly different. They know it and we know it. Apart perhaps from family, we usually relate better and more readily to other expatriates of whatever nationality and in whatever country we come across them. Our own countrymen and women appear to us curiously insular, if not a bit dull, while their eyes glaze over if we are foolish enough to answer any query about where we’re from in more than a word. We don’t quite speak the same as they any more, something sets us apart and they don’t quite know what to make of us. The more blinkered of them consider us to be in some way disloyal and some of them would even seek to deny us the benefits of our citizenship and even pensions.
In short we expatriates make our beds and we must lie in them with good grace, accepting the passage of time and what it brings, until we must move on – some of us never do. As an expat, one of the things we inevitably come to see in
My dilemma then, and that of any expartriate anywhere whether they feel it or not, is that without the standing to participate fully in the complete spectrum of political and social debate of our country of origin, we deny ourselves the right to address the burning issues of the day, issues which affect every one of us and generations to come.
How we personally conduct ourselves does make a difference and is important, but - it is no longer enough. It’s too late for that. Enough of us need to join with other likeminded people and make a political difference at grass roots level. We can’t do that in a land where we have no legal standing. The only way we can make a meaningful difference in the world today is to take action within local communities making the changes necessary to address these issues in a way and scale that central government is forced to follow suit at national and international levels.
Of course there is a downside. It isn’t home and they organise things differently here, so get used to it. Adapt or move on. By and large that is what most people who come here do. The only real drawback to Bali is the level of healthcare available and that is improving. That said the question of individual healthcare is the one thing to which all foreign residents in Bali would do well to pay particular attention.
Australians of course are in the enviable position of having it both ways through sheer proximity to their ‘near North” while enjoying one of the world’s best national health services. Though quite how they need to square that with their tax obligations I couldn’t say.
I have to confess that while I would never vote Tory in an UK general election I have no burning desire to record my vote since to do so is not going to make a difference.
These issues are by now clear for all to see: climate change, overpopulation, nuclear war and economic inequality. They are essentially one and the same, and cannot be left unaddressed any longer if our civilisation is to survive.
Whatever the make up of the expatriate community its hard core comprises men and women of all ages, surfies to retirees, who have made their home in Bali because they have come to love the place and prefer it above all others. Anyone who has spent long periods away from the country of their birth take note of the costs and benefits of their nonresident stutus. For many such benefits are financial and climatic. The sun shines, there are blue skies, white sand beaches and you either pay none, or very little tax. The cost of living is low and you can afford help in the house. Add to that a local population that is by and large welcoming and possess a fascinating culture it is easy to see why so many foreigners are attracted to Bali.
All else is a self-indulgent quibble. Dealing with bureaucrats is a time-consuming pain in the arse in any country, as are dealing with the utilities. Don’t even get me started on that most post-human of all recent innovations, the curse that dares call itself ‘customer service’.
welcome, but not if I’m unappreciative, critical or ungrateful. In which case the locals not unnaturally wonder what’s keeping me here?
The only agency that can bring about global change on this level is the national entity, that is for the majority of countries in the world going through such a bottom-up process.
All of this is par for the course and need not abash us unduly, for by and large we are out in the world and they are not. We retain most of our birthright, culture and upbringing plus whatever we have the wit and desire to take aboard of the other cultures in which we are free to immerse ourselves. That said, there are certain prices to be paid that become apparent over time that I wonder about and which nowadays I find increasingly matter. I do not know how much other longstanding expatriates feel about this, but it concerns me to find that I am effectively a political neuter. I do not mean by this that I cannot vote in a general election in my country, which is (for now) the United Kingdom. I can and have. But that’s about as far as it can go. In Bali, Indonesia or even Hong Kong, where I have right of abode, I cannot vote and as a guest in these countries I may be
We know international talking shops can’t do it. We have seen the Great and the Good , the talking heads of our world, shamed by the stark clarity of a girl barely sixteen years old speaking truth to power. Something has shifted. I didn’t plan or want to go back to my chilly country of birth, but when circumstances permit, I may find I have to.
