WHO WE ARE
Adopt a family is a Bali-based community initiative helping families in need, who are unable to make a living during the COVID – 19 pandemic. Life in Bali changed dramatically since the outbreak of the virus. Especially, the impact of no tourism has led to a significant rise in unemployment amongst local people who have no access to welfare. This has already resulted in widespread poverty across the island. Instead of being able to stay safe at home, they are forced onto the streets and into unsafe situations to try to earn some money. Debbie Huang, like many people who live in Bali, was disturbed by what she saw on the streets. Her strong belief in making a difference in the lives of children and their families led her to challenge her thinking on what she could do if she could rally support from those who had the means to help. It all started with her vision to feed Gojek drivers, who often do not earn enough for themselves let alone their families, through a local soto and ayam warong. The aim was to feed 50 drivers and have them survey their families and neighborhoods for those in dire need. A secondary aim was that the warong would be doing enough business to stay functional. Starting with a small fund and the support of Debbie’s family and some good friends who gave her the courage to begin, Adopt A Family was able to give out its first 50 packages within a week of surveying the Gojek drivers. By this time a WhatsApp group had collected a diverse group of innovative people who helped get the charity off and running. By enlisting not only the donations but the ideas and skills of a range of people, Adopt-A-Family grew quickly. Instagram and Facebook accounts were created to spread the word and seek donations. In less than a week a further 60 families were supported. By the third week, 250 families from Denpasar to Gianyar, families who scavenged on the dump for recyclables, and the unemployed were on the list of families receiving support. A team of willing and dedicated team of volunteer delivery people were on the ground, and donations were rolling in. By the time we held this press media, AAF had been working for 90 days where we were able to support more than 1100 families in Bali.
WHO WE HELP
The families we help are some of the lowest-paid workers in Bali. They have come to rely on the flow on effect of the tourism industry C/G/I-15 Jan 20 and were some of the first to be hit when that stopped due to the COVID-19 pandemic. These are people you may see in your daily life. Gojek and Grab drivers. Foragers and collectors at the rubbish dump or along streets looking in bins. The pandemic has left all of them with little or no work and thieir wages have dried up to as little as IDR 25,000 (US$ 1.50) a day. Or worse yet they return home, after a long and fruitless day, empty handed. These are the families that were living hand to mouth before the pandemic and now find the hand and the mouth both quite often empty.

The prototype, which was ready in March this year, took around eight weeks to produce. Dear, Dr. Kris, I’ve read that living near heavy traffic and As the parents of a disabled thecontamination issue of accessinhas main roads increases the riskchild, of lead the been dear to the hearts of the founders of Eco Living Bali, soil and is it bad for vegetable gardening? The inspiration for an all-terrain risks or ways to make an edible garden in this situation? wheelchair came when the duo heard of the plight of a Thanks in advance, Jan. After numerous brainstorming sessions, thepouring team decided Rejuvenating a poor soil is more involved then fertiliser to build prototype materials thatcow aredung easyand to over the their ground. Natural from fertiisers such as source and repair in Indonesia. The wheelchair frame, chicken manure need to be worked in along with compost over laminated seat, backrest, foot rest and rear basket are all time to gradually improve the soil, otherwise try raised garden beds with a whole new ‘imported’ soil for an instant solution. As for lead contaminated soil which is sometimes an issue in urban areas, replacing the soil or amending it is also the solution. If you live near main roads, industrial areas or old buildings you would expect an elevated level of lead in your soil.
A recent Australian study led by RMIT University, Melbourne, found that 20% of edible home gardens are contaminated with levels of lead exceeding the safety guidelines of 300 mg/kg whereas natural background levels are usually in the range of 15-40mg/kg. The figure is worse in Sydney, where a similar study found 40 per cent of vegetable patches had levels of lead that exceeded the safety guidelines. I can imagine that a similar statistic plays out across gardens in most cities and crowded urban areas the world over. High levels of lead remain in the soil in urban areas - the result from adding the toxic metal to paint and petrol for decades. Living close to main roads is an issue due to lead accumulation in soils from traffic pollution. Vegetable gardens should be established away from busy roads - at least 20 to 80 metres away, lead levels are usually elevated directly next to main roads. In addition - generally the older the house, or any other building for that matter containing lead-based paint, then the more lead found in the surrounding garden beds. Most often areas most affected are under the dripline of the eaves due to the weathering and runoff of leaded paints throughout the seasons.
Agung in Ben village. The wheelchair is protected with environmentally-friendly lacquer and sealant to ensure that it withstands rough weather conditions. The decision was also made to use mountain bike wheels suitable for steep or uneven terrain. “As there is already a short supply of metal wheelchair parts in Bali, we wanted to find an alternative solution, and as owners of an eco store, we wanted to find a sustainable solution. As bamboo is found in abundance in Bali and throughout Asia, a bamboo wheelchair could be easily repaired by a bamboo artisan in a village,” Brad says, adding that each wheelchair has to be custom made to fit the beneficiary’s requirements.
Up to date, Eco Living Bali and East Bali Bamboo Bikes have funded and built three bamboo wheelchairs. The first wheelchair, or the prototype, is currently on display in the Eco Living Bali shop in Kerobokan. The two other wheelchairs have been handed over to those in need. Nasrudin, who was the inspiration behind the project, received the second wheelchair, while the third wheelchair was donated to 15-year-old Nengah Macika, the son of one of the East Bali Bamboo Bikes craftsmen from Ban Village. “We have a growing list of underprivileged children and adults in Bali and Lombok who require all-terrain wheelchairs, and we are currently seeking funding to make them,” says Brad. “We are initially only targeting Bali and Lombok, however, we plan to expand to other islands soon and then hopefully the rest of Asia.” As the issue of access for people with disabilities is close to Lead in the soil presents a risk if it is either inhaled or ingested. Lead in the soil can also be absorbed by vegetables grown in it. Children who play in the garden are also at risk. If living near main roads, consider growing vegetables in raised garden beds filled with clean imported soil and compost. Limit potential exposure by avoiding plants known to be lead accumulators such as low-growing leafy vegetables like lettuce, as well as root vegetables including carrots, onions, turnips and radishes. As a general rule, the worst affected vegetables are either unwashed or unpeeled root vegetables. Leafy greens can be affected although much of this could possibly be surface borne dust. The least affected plants are those that produce fruiting parts - whether or not we consider them ‘fruit’ or ‘vegetables’. There’s very little danger of lead toxicity in anything from tomatoes to papayas and pumpkins and all fruit trees in general. Plants are fairly good at keeping lead out of themselves in most circumstances, but if the vegetables are covered in soil, or even an invisible layer of dust settles on fruit or leafy greens, you may be consuming lead from the soil in that way. All fruit and vegetables taken from the garden should be washed to remove all traces of soil before consumption. A good diet with adequate amounts of calcium and phosphorous has been shown to reduce absorption of dietary lead. Similarly, those same two nutrients help reduce lead uptake in plants. Seaweed and spirulina when eaten have also been demonstrated to bind heavy metals and remove them from the body. It’s not clear from the studies whether you have to eat them concurrently with the potentially contaminated foods or just every now and
Ben and Twone’s hearts, they do not make any profit from this venture. As such, Eco Living Bali urgently requires funding to build more wheelchairs. Each wheelchair sponsor will receive a certificate and a photo of the wheelchair their contribution helps to build. Those who sponsor an entire wheelchair will have their name or logo placed on the chair.
Nengah Macika’s Story Macika was a healthy baby until three months of age when he developed high fever and suffered several seizures. Since then, Macika’s growth and mobility have been affected. He is also non-vocal and struggles to communicate with his family. Wash your edible plants, mulch your soil, and work in compost and organic matter which will help to bind any lead, reducing the bioavailability but also improving the overall soil health at the same time. On a final note – Old-school paints were up to 50% lead and even with newer layers painted over the top, the levels of lead left contained on the interior and exterior walls of old buildings are still likely to be high. The safe level of lead in food is measured in parts per million so it’s easy to see how disturbed, crumbling, scraped, sanded or flaking paint can be a major source of direct contamination – whether from inhalation or ingestion. Please be careful when renovating your home. Have a professional remove flaking exterior lead-based paint to prevent future contamination. Nengah Macika’s Story Macika was a healthy baby until three months of age when he developed high fever and suffered several seizures. Since then, Macika’s growth and mobility have been affected. He is also non-vocal and struggles to communicate with his family. Until 2004, when the East Bali Poverty Project established monthly parent-baby health posts in neighboring Cegi, there were no health facilities near Ben village, where Macika lives. In 2005, the East Bali Poverty Project found a volunteer professional massage therapist who trained Macika’s parents to give him daily massages, but he has shown little improvement. While Macika’s mobility remains restricted, his new all-terrain bamboo wheelchair means that he can now get around more freely. www.ecolivingbali.com https://www.eastbalipovertyproject.org https://www.eastbalibamboobikes.com By Anita Copyright © 2019 Bali Advertiser You can read all past articles of BA Feature Article at www.BaliAdvertiser.biz C/Ho/G-1 Jan. 20

Parsley is just so potently good for you that you can’t afford not to have it in your diet - so next time eat your garnish!
In conclusion, grow and juice whatever green leafy vegetable you like, I just think that parsley is so good because of the health benefits and the fact that it will effectively grow on its own, flowering, attracting bees, easily self-seeding, multiplying and sprouting up in rock crevices and pavement - hence its common name - rock celery. Quite possibly parsley will be the next years fad - especially if I can have anything to do with it….now how about that Instagram account!

TOKO BUKU Everyday Balinese By I Gusti Made Sutjaja
The dialogs are presented twice in two different speech levels consisting of almost entirely different words. Depending upon whom you are talking to, separate vocabularies are used in Balinese. The first version, denoted “A,” represents the lumrah or common tongue. The second, denoted “B,” is alus or refined Balinese. There are actually six different speech levels from the highest alus singgih used to address priests and rajas down to the lowest forms, Bahasa Kasar (common languages), which includes not only lumrah but the andap and wake everyday languages used all over Bali by children, young people and for some reason by the inhabitants of northern Buleleng District. Each lesson on food, greetings, shopping, money, finding your way, etc. contains a list of words in both lumrah and alus forms, followed by their Indonesian and English translations. In these sections, you’re able to compare the different words and expressions of the two speech levels in column format. These vocabulary lists repeat and reinforce the words and expressions used in the dialogs. The most difficult part of learning Balinese are the different speech levels, even though they follow much the same grammatical rules. The differences lie in word choice. For example, there are three different words for “eat,” depending upon the circumstances and who you are addressing. In the most refined language (alus), it is ngerayun. In the second level (lumrah), it is ngajeng. In the lowest speech level, the word for “eat” is ngamah. Lumrah words are used when participants of equal social status are conversing. It reflects intimacy and informality among its users. Alus words are

Everyday Balinese is a concise and user-friendly guide to the Balinese language targeted to anyone who wishes to learn colloquial Balinese. There are 23 lessons (not exercises) in this course book, each with a dialog that centers around daily life. These realistic beginner conversations are a great way to learn Balinese as it is really spoken. Though tending to be a bit dry, the dialogs are easy to follow and cover realistic situations.

This is the time you can really come into your own.
Negative emotions such as fear or anger are a natural part of our instinctual survival techniques. We see a snake, a car coming at us, or a large coconut over our heads, and fear focuses our energy to avoid the threat and save ourselves. We have a disagreement with a friend and our anger consumes us well after we’ve had the confrontation. This is the problem with our habitual experience with negative emotions. They stay with us, clouding what is happening in our present moment experience. While we can’t avoid these emotions, because they are a natural part of us to ensure our survival, we can cultivate positive emotions, which have a lasting effect on our brains and our everyday lives. Research done at the University of North Carolina has found that positive emotions such as joy, contentment, gratitude, and love open our minds to more possibilities in Don’t wallow in regrets for things for our lives. Physical health and a positive mental outlook are crucial to preventing the diseases and deterioration one encounters in old age. Lifestyle, more than genetics will help you in that. So if you do have a physical illness or condition, there is much evidence to show that living a healthier life will aid and abet its demise or at least control its severity. This means banning toxins from your food and environment, including toxic relationships. It means eating a fruit and plant rich diet to beef up on antioxidants and limit free radical damage to your cells. It means dealing with the unavoidable stresses of life in a balanced and laissez faire-laissez aller way. It means getting out and exercise, having regular checkups to monitor your health and boost your nutritional deficiencies. Above all, it’s a mental thing. If you act young, you will feel young. If you give in to the occasional aches and pains and feel old, you will age yourself prematurely. Feeling old is really an option. You can be a quadriplegic or suffer from a debilitating disease like the late Stephen Hawking whose mind was brilliant to the end, yet have such an upbeat mood and youth-like confidence in the future that you stimulate and motivate yourself to do For more on gratitude go here: https://emmons.faculty. great things, discover new adventures and enjoy life from ucdavis.edu whatever perch you’re on. Rainwater can be stored in tanks, but usually tanks will not hold all of it. Extra water can be stored in the ground, in ponds and by trees that store water in their roots, trunk, branches and leaves. Dig a shallow trench around your house in places where the rain falls, then fill with gravel. Use the soil from digging the trench to make the ground higher so that the water flows away from the house. This will help keep the house dry during the wet season. Water can be run to vegetable gardens, compost pits, etc. Edges of garden pathways can also function as swales to collect and hold water. Dig new holes for trees, but leave them empty to fill with rain, which will soften the soil so that when trees are planted at the end of the wet season, they will grow better.
