Wild in the Streets While dancers and musicians in New Orleans and Rio are going wild with Carnival color, banging out rhythms, and stomping feet, Bali will have its own outrageous parades around the island on the night of 6 March, the evening before Nyepi. Why go half way around the world to see creepy grinning papier-mache faces or grotesque monsters, if you can gawp at the madness and marvels right here in your own village? Inquire at the local banjar as to where their meticulously crafted ogoh-ogoh monsters will be paraded, or the locations of the finishing battles and burnings. Try to attend festivities close to where you’re going to spend the night, since traffic can be held up while parades and battles are in progress. Make walking distance and strategic parking your watchwords.

One little-known Nyepi tradition in Karangasem is the fire fight in the village of Jasri (15 mins east of Candidasa). If you can stay March 6 – 8 in that area (Jasri boasts nearly every class of shoreline accommodation), Ter-teran is a bucket-list spectacle for lovers of Bali traditions, performed only every other year. Shirtless young and old men on opposing teams battle each other with fire and drive away evil. Born of Bali Aga tradition, it’s scary, thrilling, dangerous, and all with the blessing of the pedanda (Hindu priest).

At nightfall, all hell breaks loose as opposing teams face each other and raucously hurl burning torches at each other along a couple hundred meters of the main road. Usually there are two battles (four teams total). Bring a camera, don a face mask against the smoke, and pray the evil spirits are truly driven out. As with some other Karangasem rituals, true physical sacrifice is shown by proud acceptance of wounds (and any burns do get a blessing of holy water). MONEY MATTERS Lessons from The US Government Shutdown No, this is not going to be a political rant about the causes, pros and cons of the longest shutdown in US history. Instead I would like to focus on one of the surprising consequences of the shutdown and what we can learn from it. The US is one of the richest countries in the world. It is currently enjoying near full employment and wages that have risen faster then inflation. The minimum wage varies from state to state but at the end of 2018 it ranged from a minimum of US$7.83 to a high of $11.50 an hour. If we assume an average working day of 7.5 hours and 22 working days in a month that equates closely to monthly wages of $1,292 to $1,897. How does this compare to Indonesia and specifically Bali? In US Dollar terms at the current rate of exchange the minimum wage for Jakarta at the end of 2018 was equal to $278 a month and in Bali just $164. There are many countries in the world where minimum rates are even lower or do not even exist. Little wonder that millions of people in developing countries yearn to move to the US, and that many risk their lives in trying to do so.

The culture is opposite to that of some other countries where people are averse to wanton spending. The problem in Japan for example has been that people are saving and not spending, resulting in their economy stagnating. The downside to living the good life The very public impact on government employees demonstrates the fragile nature of the American way of life. We saw a much bigger impact in the 2008 Global Financial Crisis, when millions lost their jobs, homes and cars. And when you fall on hard times your credit rating falls with you and it is very hard to climb back on the ladder.

People who run out of cash are not necessarily poor. In fact they may be very rich, but only on paper if the wealth is not easily accessible. A common example of distress is ownership of an expensive property. A highly desirable asset, but one which can take years to sell if market conditions are not favourable. If the cash runs out and you can’t pay the bills you are technically insolvent and your creditors can take possession of the property. Far better to buy a less ambitious property in the first place but the next best alternative is to curb other spending and build up a healthy reserve in the bank. The same applies to all long term investments Whether it is a property, a long term savings plan or portfolio of stock market investments don’t invest until you have satisfied yourself that you have adequate cash reserves to see you through unforeseen setbacks such as job loss, serious illness etc. Unlike a property a financial investment can be sold at short notice but you may still face penalties or find you are having to sell at the wrong time, such as at the end of 2018 after markets had crashed.

So what did the US government shutdown reveal? Given the relatively high minumum wages in the US and the fact that the majority of workers, including government workers, would be earning far more than the minimum wage the impact of a loss or suspension of wages for just a few weeks should have been manageable. Yet soon after the first missed pay cheque we heard stories of hardship, fears of loss of homes and cars through inability to maintain loan repayments and later the final indignity of government employees lining up for free food giveaways. This conjoured up visions of the soup kitchens in the Great Depression, yet we are talking about people with good jobs and enjoying a relatively high standard of living. But it seemed that many were living so close to their financial limits that a single missed pay cheque risked putting them out on the streets.

But don’t go to extremes; beware of ‘reckless caution’!

Peer pressure or ‘keeping up with the Joneses’ makes it only too tempting to stretch loans to the limit. Fine while the income is steady but a recipe for disaster when income dries up. In the US a single missed payment on a car loan can mean that your late model Chevy or Ford can be spirited from your drive overnight. The repossession crews are very efficient. No gentle reminders as you might get in countries like the UK.

The government employees are not alone. A BBC report recently stated that 40% of Americans have enough savings to sustain them for only a couple of weeks. And while loans are granted freely to those who can demonstrate they have a regular income, the doors are closed to those who do not.

The lesson is a clear one. Cut back the borrowing and spending and build up a safe reserve of cash. Use credit cards sensibly and pay them off in full rather that fall into the downward spiral of paying high interest rates on extended credit.

Having lived in the US for a few years I can relate to this. The culture is one of borrowing and spending, not saving, although most people are obliged to save for their retirement. There are often tax incentives to encourage borrowing for homes, cars and domestic items. This in turn generates income for financial institutions and stimulates the economy as people who are spending money are

Some may take fright at so many tales of hardship, not to mention the frequent reports of pension fraud and investment scams to the point where they decide to leave all their money in the bank. That is a big mistake unless there is a clear purpose for using that money in the foreseeable future. Keep ample reserves yes, and much more than you would need to cover a couple of missed pay cheques. But to ensure real, long term growth money has to be invested in the real world and should be done so carefully and based on sound advice. ‘Reckless caution’ is a phrase that has been coined for taking too defensive a position. Reckless because your wealth will not grow but will remain ‘frozen in time’ as prices rise and the purchasing value of paper cash diminishes. Keeping a balance between cash reserves and what can be allocated to future growth is one of the important challenges of financial planning.

The Balinese Addiction to Water Wrapped in Plastic Part III In the last two issues I’ve been talking about the environmental disaster in Bali that has been caused by single-use plastic, particularly single-use cups and bottles. As I mentioned at the end of my last article, there are, and always have been, alternatives available.

Did you know, for example, that the Balinese have their own traditional filtration system? I learnt about this from a friend of mine, Gede Kresna, who together with his wife, Ayu Gayatri, has Rumah Intaran in Bengkala Village, Singaraja. He is constantly researching about the genius behind traditional architecture and cuisine, and has produced a number of books. He also posts a lot on Facebook and I learned about this water filtration system there.

Basically the system uses black sugar palm fibre, charcoal and sand to filter the water in a large clay urn. The water is poured in from the top and it drips down into another urn where it is potable. The system that we currently use at home and at Mekar Bhuana Gamelan and Dance Centre are filters from a Dutch company called Nazava. They offer two systems: dispensers of a number of sizes that use gravity; and filters that are attached to pipes that use the water pressure that come off your tap. The filter is made from dense, porous ceramic block which filters down to 0.4 microns. The smallest bacteria or parasite known to science are 0.9 microns, so the nasties simply can’t penetrate. Minerals that we need for good health remain, which means that what we drink is not dead water. The result is clean water with no detectable taste. These are two simple and economic systems that require no electricity and little maintenance. They can both be used in all public settings, such as temples and banjars, with the public encouraged to bring their own tumblers. I’m convinced that these filtration systems are the solution to Bali’s water wrapped in plastic disaster – share with your friends near and far! Update L’Assiette is French and offers ‘home-style’ cooking at its garden restaurant on Jln. Merthanadi, Kerobokan. Real French, no fusion just classic French! Lunch is lighter cuisine; Terrine de Campagne or Oeuf Cocotte aux Girolles, coddled egg with mushrooms, Dinner is more exotic; semi-cooked Duck Foie Gras [served cold] and a main of that all time favourite, Duck Confit. However it is one of their dessert dishes that reigns supreme, the very best ever Profiteroles [pictured], a good enough reason alone for a visit. Choux pastry so light it almost floats! IF your experience of this magic French creation is confined to commercial cake shop fare then forget and start again. These are sensational, try once and you will want to re-order every time.

Twist is not much more than a ‘hole in the wall’, so small it is easy to miss. It nestles in the corner of a busy little stretch of budget restaurants on Raya Pengosekan, Ubud [next door to the original location of Taco Casa, which will soon now return to those renovated premises]. One long communal table and a couple of smaller ones is all that there is, and they are almost always full, the ultimate sign of good reasonably priced food in this very competitive area. The menu is an International mix, maybe just all of the chef’s favourites? The Caramelized Pork is exceptional [a touch of Vietnam?], as are the curries which are Thai style. They even do Burgers and very good they are too. Cheesecakes are a daily special, many different creations. Ryoshi is moving in Sanur. Still to be found on Jln Danau Tamblingan but a few kilometers further south, between Soul in a Bowl and Massimo. The new setting much more spacious than the original with a garden frontage for al fresco dining, inside in the air-con both intimate booths and normal tables, Ryoshi style. Now with 8 outlets overall this group assures that their fish is fresh daily and as a result consistently presents the very best sushi/sashimi in Bali [always prepared ‘a la minute’, as ordered] as well as a standard menu of all the normal Japanese dishes that you would expect to find. Sukun is the restaurant at the Amnaya Resort just off Jln. Kartika Plaza, Tuban [Gang Puspa Ayu]. Indonesian is the main cuisine although being in a resort there is also a very International menu. Set in tropical gardens the setting was fittingly designed by the late Made Wijaya, who was once a young Australian tourist who made Bali his home and left many landscaping monuments, such as this, behind. It is a nice place to escape to in downtown Kuta/Tuban. Being a hotel the breakfast only goes to 11.00 a.m., something that I can never understand as many people, tourists and locals, often prefer a brunch to a full early morning breakfast [and those who cater well for that are often busy all day as a result]. The product is good enough for that to happen here. Eggs dishes are to the fore with an excellent Benedict leading the way. An unusual but interesting breakfast offering was to combine eggs with soft shell crab. Balinese and standard Indonesian dishes are what is presented and there is a Balinese Megibung that offers a wide range of carefully selected local tastes.

Shima, Bali’s only specialty Teppanyaki and Shabu-Shabu restaurant, Jln. Petitenget, has added another lunch menu update. They now also have a Tempura set menu of Cawan Mushi, Mixed Tempura, Onigiri Katsuo, Mango Tempura Ice Cream, Ocha. Also on offer are dishes of Ramen noodles. Both also feature on their a la carte menus. Café Sardinia has long been one of the star performers at Beachwalk, now a 2nd Sardinia is about to open in the new Carrefour Trans Studio Mall on Iman Bonjol. Its simple Italian offerings have been a hit with the beach fraternity at Kuta and will also no doubt appeal to the urban cowboys who will frequent the mall. Mimpi Manis, Jalan Tandakan, Sanur, is just in front of, and operated by the same owner/chef, as Kayu Manis. Not to be confused with the hotel of the same name, as there is no connection. Mimpi Manis has the same attention to detail in the kitchen as big brother but serving local cuisine instead of the international offerings that have long made Kayu Manis one of Sanur’s best restaurants. Another winner! Ithaka began in Canggu [Jln. Pantai Batu Bolong] and then also opened in Ubud [Jln. Tirta Tawar]. They offer what is always popular, simple tasty food that is cheap! It was not the first, nor will it be the last, place opened by surfers who came to Bali, fell in love with the island and stayed. The all day breakfasts are very popular; Paninis [with bacon & eggs], Avocado Toast [oat toast, scrambled eggs, chia seeds], Honey Granola, Dragon Fruit Bowl, etc]. Many salads incl. Vegan and Quinoa. Tasty snacks; corn cakes, eggplant balls, and Spanish style tapas. Fancy a curry? Choose from Indonesian, Thai or Indian. Just a sandwich or burger, many to choose from. Great value!

Hamabe is the Japanese restaurant at the Westin resort. Their new robata grill showcases a traditional cooking method from the Sendai region in northern Japan. It originated from local fishermen gathering around a communal source of heat aboard their boats to cook food and stay warm while at sea. Set menus are also available for Sushi, Sashimi, Tempura, Tongkatsu, and general Seafood.

Something Different!

Bittersweet is different! Jalan Monkey Forest in Ubud is always a busy frenetic rush, full of noise and chaos. Stop at Bittersweet and enter another world. An European style café, chandeliers and all. The décor is so different it is almost strange. A section of small booth tables for lone diners, another area of normal tables, a flower shop, handicrafts and a clothing store, all in one.

compote is the pick of the bunch. The Dragon Fruit Smoothie is served in a coconut shell, the dragon fruit combined with banana and mint, topped with raisins, cashews and chia seeds. The healthy options continue with a range of salads. The Pear & Rucola includes pomelo, radish, strawberries and almonds, served with sourdough toast. The Green Mango Salad is non Thai style, shredded with jicama [a Mexican root plant that provides super high soluble fibre] and pomelo, topped with crushed cashews and a slightly spicy vinaigrette. Poke is a Hawaiian tradition. It just means ‘sliced’ and usually refers to fresh Tuna. The Ahi Tuna Poke at Bittersweet is close to the Hawaiian original, just slices off marinated tuna with red radish and cherry tomatoes, topped with sesame seeds, and drizzled with a dressing of mango, ginger and soy. There are a few pasta dishes, I was attracted to the Pumpkin Ravioli in sage butter but found it a bit disappointing, the pasta being too thick and doughy, although the taste was still good. Perhaps I should have had the Portobello Mushroom Fettuccini?

It is not the first clothing store to also include a café. I remember being taken to Serendipity’s in New York in the 70’s to try their famous Pecan Pie, a small café area hidden behind clothing racks, with a huddled unshaven Robert Redford and his wife Joanne Woodward at a corner table [evidently their ‘brownstone’ was just across the road]. No sight of any such celebrities at Bittersweet but it is that sort of place where such happenings would not surprise. The menu is varied, mostly café-style International, with an American-Japanese touch, an open kitchen at the rear. Breakfast is almost all day, till 3.00 anyway. As almost always in Bali, an Egg Benedict tops the list, closely followed by the house special; Sourdough Toast topped with house-cured salmon, smashed avocado and fresh dill, so healthy and tasty! The Vegetarian Omelette is topped with feta cheese and sun-dried tomatoes [add that cured salmon as well, if you wish]. As well, all the usual egg breakfast dishes. Pancakes of course, the Blueberry Pancakes with strawberry

Seafood mains include Seared Tuna and pan fried Butterfish and Salmon. The Butterfish strangely arrived as three escalopes, though whilst crisp on the outside the inner flesh was flaky and perfect. Other mains can be Chicken, grilled or in a red curry Thai style, or Asian style Beef Strips, with onion and tomato. Bittersweet also has daily specials. They may include such dishes as a Beetroot and Gorgonzola Salad, Duck Breast with caramelized pear or a Grilled Duck Leg. They also have a range of teas and coffees, some standard some unusual such as the ‘Spicy’ Cappuccino, with cinnamon and caramelized orange peel. There are many different cakes, cheesecakes and pastries for that mid afternoon coffee and snack. Don’t be put off by the mish mash of different offerings in this space, the café section is definitely worth a visit, an oasis from the madding crowd.

A dynamic, community focused IB World School As parents, we want our children to be safe, happy and learning at school. Student leadership is something we value and promote in the Secondary School. We have a very active Student Council (StuCo) made up of representatives from across the school. These students regularly meet with the Secondary Principal to propose events and improvements at the school. All Secondary students are involved in service to the community. These activities are often based at the school but there is also opportunity for students to instigate their own service for a range of organisations or needs outside of the school. They set goals and regularly reflect on

the impact their service has had on the local and/or global community. They also reflect on how their experiences have impacted them personally and how their perspectives have changed. The participation in many meaningful community engagements and extra-curricular activities sometimes becomes an enduring passion which can often shape who they become as adults. Our campus and student body, while small and intimate, is a place of high quality education in a congenial and respectful environment. Our teachers have specialist degrees from universities around the world and many possess postgraduate qualifications. Every year BIS graduates receive scholarships and acceptance to great universities in many different countries. Our alumni network comes back to visit the campus frequently and they talk about the great preparation they received when they were a student at this school. Low teacher to student ratios and class sizes means that students receive individualised attention and the curriculum is differentiated to suit the needs of each learner. Students have a voice in their classrooms and their learning overall; their input is sought after and respected. EDUCATION MATTERS Greetings, I am Dr. Leith and welcome to my very first edition of Education Matters! Without doubt, the domain of Education is enormous. So too are the multitude of issues that impact upon how a child, young adult, adult, old bugger, navigates a course to a destination whereby they can achieve their unique natural potential. I want to clarfiy from the outset of this column, how I am convinced Education is indeed a life long process! A journey that certainly does not conclude once your study is wall papered with numerous university degrees and certificates or even when others are obliged to address you as Doctor or Professor. I aspire to continue to learn until my last gasp. Education Matters has a simple question and answer format. Send me an email outlining how a particular concern, experience, or even fear is generating problems to attain a positive Educational Outcome for yourself or someone you care about. Then, I put on my thinking hat and venture into the long corridors of memory and experience and usually within a relatively short time, offer my advice. My very first question comes from Ms Clare of Seminyak. “My son is 5 years old and is an only child. For some time, he has started to behave rather differently, especially when he is in a group setting of children his own age. For example, he has little or no language skills and has trouble looking at people in the eyes, even though we have tried our best to encourage him to do so. Also, he has real problems socialising with other children. Usually, he will walk away or sit in a corner and go into “his own world”. When he has really bad meltdowns he will throw himself onto the floor and punch/hit sometimes even himself! My husband and I are trying to get our heads around these problems, especially as our son should be getting ready to go into school. Naturally, we are very concerned about what is happening to him. Can you please shed some light on our problem?” Thank you Ms Clare for your honesty and candour, it is never easy to talk about challenging matters, especially ones that affect those who we love the most. It appears that both you and your husband are aware of and

perhaps even acknowledge your son is having difficulties. Having both parents on the same page is a vital factor in order to address your son’s needs. (Don’t get me started on Parental Denial). You have mentioned a number behaviours exhibited by your son that do in fact present genuine concern, namely: 1. Language Delay. 2. Natural Eye Contact. 3. Poor Socialisation Skills. 4. Being Overwhelmed by Emotions. 5. Self Injurious Behaviour. These indicators, while not definitive, convey to me your son has some serious Developmental Delays. Clearly they are hindering him from achieving what I call, natural milestones in Developmental Growth. For example, by the age of 5 years, Typical Children have already developed a considerable vocabulary and can usually demonstate the ability to engage in sustained natural eye contact. However, it is your citing of “emotional meltdowns” and Self Injurious Behaviour that really does set my whiskers twitching. These two descriptors are indeed hallmarks that Cognitive Disfunction is prevalent. In other words, something is definitely not OK with how your son is managing his world and more importantly, how his brain does not currently have the capacity to do so. It is apparent, he is yet to develop the ability to respond to scenarios or directions he finds difficult or perhaps are not to his liking, in a calm and non confrontational manner. Developmental Delays encompass a broad range of characteristics and exhibitors, often beyond those readily associated with Education. Other common factors, (one already cited by yourself) include: 1. Attention Deficit 2. Poor Memory 3. Incorrect Perception. 4. Impulsivity. 5. Socialisation Skills. 6. Low Self Esteem 7. Learned Helplessness. Ms Clare, back in the olden days, when I commenced working with folk who think differently, it was commonplace

for practitioners to focus therapeutic intervention on young children, some even younger than your own son. However, in the fullness of time and after extensive research, which continues to move forward at a rate of knots, the domain of Learning Needs and Developmental Delay has become a life span approach. Such needs, may in fact manifest themselves at any stage in life, furthermore these problems can and do present differently depending on the age of the individual. However, I am convinced the primary characteristics of children who exhibit a Learning and Developmental Need, invaribly lead to deficits in academic performance. Ms Clare, before we get too far in front of ourselves, it would be most prudent for your son to undergo a thorough Assessment and Evaluation by a qualified and experienced practitioner. It is critical for you, your husband and your son to know what is impacting upon his wellbeing and to devise and implement an effective intervention therapy plan that will facilitate the essential skills he requires. So there you have it Dear Reader, the first installment of Education Matters! Done and dusted! Finally, each week I would like to leave you with a simply homily, one that tends to encapsulate my thoughts at this point in time: “If you think Education is expensive, try and calculate the cost of ignorance”??

TOKO BUKU Reviews of English language books on Indonesia

Snow Over Surabaya by Nigel Barley How a bored and awkward Scottish schoolgirl with a yearning for distant lands grew up to become a revolutionary hero in a remote archipelagic nation, eventually writing one of the most celebrated war novels of the 20th century, is the unlikeliest of stories, but one that Muriel Stewart Walker actually lived. Always searching for an escape, her moment of epiphany occurred while working as a screenwriter in Los Angeles. Strolling one day down Hollywood Boulevard in 1932, she paused before a movie poster, Bali: The Last Paradise. This life-changing film was to inspire her to take the first steamer to the Far East, setting her life off on a course of high adventure. Born in Glasgow in 1898, Walker’s life is subject to wildly conflicting accounts. She wandered from continent to continent - Europe, America, Asia - under a multitude of different names, though she became best known as ‘K’tut Tantri’ or ‘Surabaya Sue.’ She frequently changed professions and identities, ultimately completely reinventing herself in various tongues and accents that finally bore little resemblance to the original. After WW II, she joined the struggle for Indonesian independence and broadcast the rebel’s first revolutionary radio message to the world. She smuggled arms to help finance the new republic. She witnessed the Battle of Surabaya when the British attacked the civilian population, a bloody event that some have called a war crime. She went on to become an intimate of the new leaders of the republic, living to see Indonesia take its place amongst the free nations of the world. Walker gathered her biographical tales together in Revolt in Paradise, a stirring account of her past, that inspired generations since it was first published in 1962. There have always been doubts about her version of events that many have dismissed outright as a blatant mixture of outrageous fantasy and dishonest omissions. Snow over Surabaya happily embraces those doubts and brings a new, spirited account of her adventures during those tempestuous times. Author Dr. Nigel Barley brings an anthropologist’s eye and a deep cultural knowledge of the region to breathe life into his characters and this woman’s personality, ideology and motivations. We get eye-opening insights of bygone eras,

whether they be the Hollywood scene of the 1930s, pre-war Bali during Dutch colonial times and the reality of living under brutal Japanese occupation when imperial armed forces spread like a giant bloodstain over the Indies in 1942. In his biography of K’tut Tantri, Barley gives himself over to his subject unrestrainedly. The book is a sort of reinterpreted, updated and more philosophical alternative to Walker’s novel. It is about the life that he believes K’tut Tantri wanted to lead or at least the life that he wishes she had led. Any romantically inclined writer, particularly those with such a fertile imagination as Barley, would be irresistibly drawn to this complex and intriguing character. Though hailing from the West, Walker embodies everything that the mysterious East has to offer. Barley’s take frees K’tut Tantri from her fantasies and grounds her more in the actual experiences that she lived through. In spite of the author’s claim that his contemporized interpretation of Walker’s life is largely a work of fantasy, it deals with real events that are firmly rooted in reality or at least have a ring of truth about them. Though none of the book’s historical accounts are pure invention, but they unfold in a way that the writer would have liked. Links have also been deliberately made and liberties taken that historians would consider outrageous. Yet with all the contrived circumstances and the name-dropping of celebrities and historical figures, one can’t help but sense how much Barley keenly enjoys writing. Being familiar with Indonesian history, I knew precisely what was to come, but yet I found myself looking forward to the way Barley was about to describe tumultuous events of the ‘30s, ‘40s and ‘50s. I felt that I was standing alongside K’tut Tantri while she contended with officious Dutch bureaucrats, talked her way past suspicious Japanese guards and bantered with the great artists and writers of the day.

Barley writes with grace, wit and enviable ease while employing a unique turn of phrase and a rich and varied vocabulary sprinkled with eccentric idioms, unusual metaphors and Englishisms like knickers, backsides, trousers, etc. A self-amused lover of words, there are wonderful tactile descriptions of the rapture of first love, vivid stomach-churning torture techniques in a secret police prison and the taut drama of smuggling arms from Bali to Java in an old Buick under a cargo of books. Snow Over Surabaya is an informative, entertaining work about Indonesia’s long struggle for freedom and also an idealized and reimagined yet believable portrait of an extraordinary woman. Although his subject has been rediscovered several times by both the skeptical and the credulous, her role in the Indonesian independence struggle has been largely forgotten. ‘Surabaya Sue’ is little known in the West as well as in Indonesia. The reason for this neglect lies not so much in the tenuous relationship between Walker’s life and the truth but because her book falls between the genres of war story, biography, romance and travel. In many ways, her book belongs to the syrupy romance genre that developed after the Second World War, firmly rooted in conventional, Western notions of the Orient as an exotic paradise. Today, it is perhaps closest to what is now termed chick lit in which the protagonist sees her whole life as one long romantic journey. Walker’s purpose in life was to construct, defend and live her rich fantasies. At the end, she even came to believe many of the myths herself. Beauty & Health Romance in The Spa It’s that time of year again, Saint Valentine’s Day. A time for lovers to celebrate their love. When you think of this special holiday for couples in love what comes to mind is Valentine’s Day cards, red roses, a romantic dinner and chocolate, which evokes feelings of love. It actually produces endorphins which simulate feelings of love and happiness. Spending a couple of hours in the spa with my boyfriend is my ideal way of expressing my love. I love nothing more than having spa treatments and to invite my partner to join me is the perfect way to spend this special occasion. Micha had massages in the past but never indulged in a treatment package. So for me to invite him to join me for a chocolate spa experience was a real treat. Chocolate itself speaks of love and romance. Which is why I was very happy to discover that the Body Temple Spa has a chocolate treatment for Valentine’s Day. Micha and I went to The Body Temple Spa at Finn’s Recreation Club (formerly the Canggu Club). This spa has a very modern chic look with large pictures of beautiful women gracing the walls. We sat down and enjoyed a cool glass of hibiscus tea which was served with a cold towel to refresh ourselves. Meanwhile we filled out the consultation form to give our preferences for the upcoming massage.

Two smiling therapists suddenly appeared to escort us to the room. The room was spacious with 2 large massage beds. I could hear powerful water filling up the giant tub. I looked into the alcove where a huge rectangular bath was surrounded by burning candles. We were handed a large basket each and asked to undress and put on the white bathrobe. After we were both wearing bathrobes, I approached Micha and put my arms around his neck and said, “Welcome to my world.” He smiled gratefully. We both sat in comfortable chairs in front of a footbath and dipped our feet in the warm water. Our therapists kneeled in front of us and began the foot ritual, which included a short foot massage as she cleaned my feet. Both of us were lying face down on the massage beds as the lights were dimmed and the water was shut off. Only soft music could be heard now as the massage began. An hour

of bliss prevailed as our bodies were kneaded and stroked erasing all muscular tension.

After this a warm chocolate smelling scrub was applied to the front of my body and covered with a sarong to dry a little. Micha had chosen a sandalwood scrub and mask. After this was scrubbed off she asked me to turn over and the process was repeated. Next she applied a warm creamy chocolate body mask to my body and covered me. She informed me that I would need to wait for 10 minutes for the mask to dry.

A couple minutes later the therapists set two cups of hot chocolate and a cookie on the edge of the tub and told us we had 20 minutes to enjoy alone time. Sipping on the creamy hot chocolate I asked my boyfriend how he enjoyed his treatment. “It was very nice. I loved the massage. She has very strong hands. It was an excellent massage.” “What about the scrub and mask?” I asked. “Is the scrub the one that felt like sand being rubbed on my body?” I nodded. “It’s to exfoliate the dead skin on your body and make it feel soft and very clean.” “I didn’t care for that. It felt scratchy.” “The mask is to nourish the skin. Chocolate is rich in anti-oxidants and moisturizes the skin.” I explained. “Feel how soft your skin is now.” I rubbed my hand over his forearm. “And it smells delicious.” “Yes. It is soft.” He agreed. “But I prefer the massage with oil.” “And this lovely bath?” I asked swirling my hand through the warm water. “It is nice. And romantic.” He smiled at me and kissed me. Mind Changes - When to Worry How often do you walk into a room and wonder why you’re there? You focus hard, grit your teeth, and try to remember, but come up blank. You retrace your steps and somewhere on that journey back, it dawns on you why you wanted to go to the room in first place. A niggling thought knocks on the inside of your head, “I hope I’m not losing my memory”. You start to notice that words escape you - words or names that you know you know. Try as you might, you can’t dredge them up. Then sometime later, or in the wee hours of the morning, the elusive word pops into your head unannounced, completely spontaneously. Relief floods you. ‘Nope, I’m definitely not getting dementia.’ You’ve just been using an object, like your favorite pen, your glasses, or keys, when your attention springs to something else and when it snaps back, you can’t for the life of you find the darned thing. You look high and low and then you look high and low again. Sometime during the day, you stumble across it, right where you’d laid it down, and wonder if you’re getting Alzheimer’s. If it isn’t enough that we doubt our own brain function, we hear or read more and more stories about memory loss. And there’s a good reason for that. There are nearly 45 million people worldwide with Alzheimer’s and related dementias, and unless a cure is found, that number could easily triple by 2050. What’s the Difference Between Dementia and Alzheimer’s Disease? Dementia is a general term for a decline in mental ability - a decline severe enough to interfere with the functioning of daily life. Dementia is not a disease, but rather a symptom, much like a fever is not a disease but a symptom of illness. Some diseases with dementia as a symptom, such as thyroid problems, vitamin deficiencies, and depression can be reversed if diagnosed early enough. But dementia is most commonly associated with Alzheimer’s. Alzheimer’s is an incurable terminal disease that damages the brain, breaking down the physical connections that are necessary to store new information, retrieve old information, feel compassion, be able to reason, and to problem solve. It progresses relentlessly, until finally, if something else doesn’t get the person, they die of starvation because the brain can no longer communicate to the body the need to swallow. By now you’re probably squirming in your seat wondering what the symptoms of Alzheimer’s are? This is perfectly normal. Studies show that people are more afraid of getting Alzheimer’s than cancer. At least you have a chance with cancer.

Ten Warning Signs According to the American Alzheimer’s Organization, there are 10 warning signs of possible Alzheimer’s Disease. All of these characteristics may not be present. It takes only one to suggest a trip to a geriatric neurologist. 1. Memory Loss that Disrupts Daily Life - not being able to remember new information, forgetting important dates or events, asking the same questions over and over. In contrast, a typical age-related change would be forgetting names or appointments but remembering them later. In other words, you know that you’ve forgotten. 2. Challenges in Planning or Problem Solving – losing the ability to do simple math, solving problems, organizing things, keeping track of recipes or monthly bills. Some people may experience changes in their ability to develop and follow a plan or work with numbers. In contrast, a typical age-related change would be making occasional errors when balancing a checkbook or adding up numbers. 3. Difficulty Completing Familiar Tasks - sometimes people have trouble driving a familiar route or forgetting the rules of a game. My husband, Bob, was in year five of Alzheimer’s when he went out to do grocery shopping and didn’t come home for four hours. He was so scared when he found me again, he was shaking. The car was strewn with open maps he couldn’t make heads or tails of. A natural age-related change would be missing a street or freeway exit, but knowing you have. Or you may occasionally need tech help with your computer. 4. Confusion with Time or Place – people with Alzheimer’s can lose track of dates, places or seasons. Sometimes they forget where they are or how they got there. One night, Bob and I were in bed. He started to get up. “Where are you going,” I asked? I have to go home to my wife, he said. “I am your wife.” He sheepishly replied, “Oh” and crawled back into bed. A natural age-related change might be forgetting someone’s birthday but figuring it out later. 5. Trouble Understanding Visual Images and Spatial Relationships - for some people, having vision problems is a sign of Alzheimer’s. They may have difficulty reading, judging distance and determining color or contrast, which may cause problems with driving. A natural age-related change could be visual changes due to cataracts or other eye problems. 6. Problems with Words in Speaking or Writing - people with Alzheimer’s may have difficulty following a conversation. They stop in the middle and are not be sure how to continue. The may struggle with words, forgetting the names of things. I started to notice that Bob used the word ‘thing’ a lot instead of the object’s name. He would say, “Pass me that thing to stir this stuff with,” when what he wanted was a spoon to stir his iced tea. A natural agerelated change would be sometimes not finding the right word or temporarily forgetting a word. 7. Misplacing Things and Losing the Ability to Retrace Steps - a person with Alzheimer’s might put things in strange places. They may lose things and not be able to find them. They may accuse others of stealing from them. This was a biggie for us. I would find towels rolled up with things from the bathroom I’d searched for. In his mind, Bob was packing to be ready to travel because traveling was such a big part of our life together. A natural age-related

change would be occasionally misplacing something but being able to retrace steps to find it. 8. Decreased or Poor Judgment – people with Alzheimer’s might experience changes in judgment or decision-making. They may be duped into giving money to telemarketers or pay less attention to grooming or keeping themselves clean. A natural age-related change might be making a bad decision from time to time, like buying something you didn’t need. 9. Withdrawal from Work or Social Activities - a person with Alzheimer’s may start to remove themselves from hobbies, social activities, work projects or sports. They may have trouble following TV programs. A natural agerelated change might be sometimes tiring of work, family and social situations and needing more alone time. 10. Changes in Mood and Personality – sometimes people with Alzheimer’s become confused, suspicious, depressed, fearful, or anxious. They may be easily upset with others when they are out of their comfort zone. A normal age-related change might come from developing specific ways of doing things and becoming irritable when that routine is disrupted. When to Get Help The Alzheimer’s Organization suggests that if you or a loved one has any of these characteristics to get it checked out, sooner rather than later. It’s important to find a specialist who understands the elder brain. Bob and I were given misinformation by a psychiatrist and neurologist because they didn’t know much about dementia. Both said they hoped their brain would be in as good a shape as Bob’s when they were his age. This plunged us back into denial and kept us from getting help early on. *** The next time you go into a room and forget why you’re there, or a good friends’ name escapes you, or you misplace your glasses for the umpteenth time in a day, just chalk it up to natural age-related changes unless you can’t retrace your steps, the friend’s name not only doesn’t come back but the person looks unfamiliar, and you’re sure someone stole those missing glasses. Say What? Question: My dad’s health is declining, and he is now

on dialysis. My mom, who doesn’t have a big support network, and who isn’t talkative about her feelings at the best of times, is running herself ragged taking care of Dad, handling his doctors’ appointments and medications, and taking care of the house. I would like to give her as much support as I can during this time even though - because I am 2,500km away - giving any kind of support is challenging. I find it emotionally draining to talk to her these days because it’s a continuous conversation about what’s wrong with Dad, and how his doctors are doing everything wrong. Underlying this is the fact that my mom doesn’t really have anyone to help her mentally or physically. I’d like to be there for her as much as possible, but how can I do that when it takes me a whole day to get back to normal (not bursting into tears every 5 minutes) after I speak with her on the phone?

Dr. ZZ: I’m so sorry you and your family are going through this. It happens to most of us sooner or later that someone in the circle of people we love develops severe health problems, and we watch someone else we love shoulder the crushing burden of being the primary caregiver. It hurts so much, and distance makes you feel helpless when you honestly can’t up and move to take of some of the on-site caregiving. It’s normal to feel guilty - as if you have the option to help and are not using it. You need to make sure that your mom knows how distressed you are about what she and your dad are going through. Sometimes, because you hold it together on the phone, the person who’s in the trenches imagines you going blithely along emotionally unscathed. Without laying a guilt trip on her for your upset, make sure she knows it

pains you to hear what she’s describing and takes you a while to recover. Tell her that you know she’s scared; that you’re scared, too. This is one of those times when what you need and what she needs are in direct conflict, and you need to not feel as if you’re letting her down. When this happens, all you can do is: 1.) try to reduce the conflict by addressing her needs and yours in ways that don’t clash, 2.) figure out what you can offer without doing violence to your own mental health, and 3.) be as articulate as possible about what you can offer and what you need. Because you and your mom seem to have an otherwise decent relationship, you can imagine that she doesn’t want you to do violence to your mental health for her sake. If one of her burdens is researching your dad’s medications and drug compatibilities, perhaps you can take on something like that from afar. Treat this like a partnership to get you both through this as whole and intact as possible.

Question: I found a private message on my husband’s Facebook when my 4-year-old son had his phone one day. I wasn’t snooping; I just happened to see a conversation he had with an old university friend who sent him nude photos. He swears he never opened the images but complimented her on their hotness anyway. I believe him because he knows I would leave him if he lied. She asked if I would be attending their class reunion next year, so she knows he’s married. She described her physical attraction to him and said she wants to connect with him and get “hot and heavy.” He didn’t agree but led her on by not saying no. We plan to compose a message together to end

their interaction, and I want to send her a heated expression of my displeasure with her attempt to ruin my marriage. Please help. What should I say to her that will get my point across?

Dr. ZZ: I know you’re angry and eager to deliver just the

right ultimatum to this woman, but you absolve your husband of all responsibility in the interaction by magically transferring all your anger to her. Perhaps he didn’t start the flirtation, but he was definitely acting underhandedly, and he got busted. Sticking your claws into the other woman will not change that fact, and it will put you in a compromising situation with someone you don’t want in your life - plus, it will give her proof that she got under your skin. There’s no message you can give her about the sanctity of marriage that’s going to win you points. If you buy your husband’s version of the events, he was just trying not to embarrass her by appearing to go along with her nefarious plans. If you step in and send her a nasty message, it lets him abdicate his role in the fact pattern while the womenfolk work it out. He can then try still being the good guy, who just happened to get caught in the middle. My suggestion is to make it 100% his responsibility to handle this and make sure the woman goes back to the world where she doesn’t exist for you. He needs to let her know that the pictures didn’t reach only their intended destination, that they were fun for no one once his wife and four-year-old son accidentally discovered them, and that she should feel embarrassed. He needs to also 100% own his part in being underhanded and encouraging her, and he needs to de-friend and block her immediately and start thinking of ways to make this up to you.

Kaizen, Wabi-Sabi, Konmari Three Japanese style Zen practices to bring order and joy to your life Zen is not a Japanese invention; it originated in India with the practice of Zen Buddhism which came to Japan via China. The term Zen was actually derived from the Chinese Chan. However, the Japanese were quick to put the reflective and meditative philosophy to practical and efficient use. They fashioned the concept of Kaizen – translated as good change -incorporating the basic principles of Zen Buddhism on a practical level. Kaizen is used to improve and innovate your daily tasks and routines. Post-WWII Japan became a manufacturing power horse, building a strong economy based on very efficient production methods coupled with a humanising philosophy applied to their work force. Toyota was one of the spear headers of this movement which recognised motivation, appreciation of worker’s efforts, team work and team participation in the manufacturing process and management decision making as critical underpinnings of their competitive success strategy. That philosophy was directly responsible for improving efficiency on the factory floor, reducing waste significantly and gaining workers’ cooperation and pride in their jobs. Instead of meting out old-fashioned reprimands or punishment for worker errors, company management empowered their employees to stop production to fix errors and provide management with suggestions and insights to improve efficiency and reduce waste. Kaizen encourages a team approach to solve problems and meet challenges by the simple application of implementing small improvements over time resulting in substantial advances in the long run. It’s the most astute encapsulation of the ‘work smart, not hard’ principle.

steps to apply the Kaizen method and improve your productivity: • Determine where your time and energy is wasted by keeping track of your daily activities, interruptions and downtime for about one week and ferret out the unnecessary time wasters. If you have routine tasks to accomplish, evaluate whether they can be made more efficient by applying standardised processes like templates, optimised filing systems, set times for emails and phone calls. If you have many meetings to attend, decide whether your presence is essential; if not delegate or minimise the amount of participation. • Start with small steps to make your work more productive and efficient. If you are overwhelmed by a task at hand it’s far easier on your stress level to break it down in manageable parts. Do 5 minutes instead of an hour and repeat every day until the task is finished. For instance, a long report can be written in stages instead of all at once. Limit your ‘wasted’ time on distractions like social media. • Make time to evaluate what works for you and what doesn’t. Focus on things you can improve. If you’re stymied or hit a snag, become frustrated and distracted, slow down, pause a moment and ask yourself what can be improved or changed to make it smoother or better. Weekly reviews to evaluate your progress and accomplishments help you prioritise and re-shift your focus. Take stock of your high and low points and ask yourself what you can improve or innovate. Another Japanese Zen practice is the esoteric Wabi-Sabi, a concept that is difficult to translate. Wabi refers to rustic simplicity, humility, living in tune with nature and appreciation of the quirks and anomalies which add uniqueness and elegance to an object or experience. Sabi is more about accepting the passage of time and the beauty, even imperfect, of aging. Together, the words convey a feeling of harmony and serenity, even melancholy, in what is uncomplicated, unassuming, mysterious and ephemeral. Wabi-Sabi is a concept you will encounter most often in design and home decorating. It is intrinsically linked to minimalism, a trend that celebrates clean, uncluttered spaces where decor is reduced to its essentials. A trend that is definitely rooted in Zen Buddhism.

Following Toyota’s lead, other companies followed suit and kaizen became a popular and accepted practice not only in Japan; it migrated to other countries like the USA and Europe. In essence, it revolutionised all types of industries and organisations, blue collar and white collar alike. Kaizen is not a rigid system or one that is only applicable to business or industry. This concept translates well to personal work and productivity; it can effectively streamline the way you work and improve your chances at success. It is flexible, adaptable to your own personal style, preferences and personality. You can take the bits and pieces that work for you and discard, adapt or improve the ones that don’t. It can be clothed in a mantra like ‘Just 5 minutes at a time’ or ‘Work 1% better today’ that keeps you motivated; it can be applied to your everyday life activities. If you have days where your time seems to be pilfered away by distractions, interruptions, bad moods or too many meetings, there is help. Use some of the following

Characteristics of the wabi-sabi aesthetic include asymmetry, authenticity, roughness, simplicity, economy, austerity, modesty, intimacy, and appreciation of the ingenuous integrity of natural objects and processes. It includes the acceptance of transience and imperfection. A great example of that is Kintsugi, translated as golden joinery, the centuries-old art of repairing broken pottery with a special lacquer dusted with powdered gold, silver or platinum.

In essence wabi-sabi can be applied to your lifestyle – and not just your decor – by celebrating humble and authentic materials and experiences, avoiding clutter and feeling unencumbered, seeking simplicity without sacrificing beauty. Embrace emptiness and solitude to inspire and rejuvenate yourself. Anchor yourself in nature and its authentic colours, moods and openness. Open your windows, door and mind to the outdoors and let the natural light and natural flagrances seep in. Closely aligned with the concept of wabi-sabi and minimalism is the KonMari method, the art of de-cluttering and organising developed by Marie Kondo, a Japanese organising consultant who insists you should only own and keep the things that ‘spark joy’. Kondo’s method, again, is based on the traditional Japanese Zen approach to spare aesthetics. It takes the typical tidying-up to a whole new level and, in doing so, it aims to cultivate a lifestyle that encourages one to cherish the things that bring true joy. Yes, it is minimalism, albeit with a heart. Marie has written a best-selling book, The Life-Changing Magic of Tidying Up and Spark Joy, to explain her method. She also appears on Netflix and is becoming a celebrity worldwide with a big fan base. Her motto is Tidy your space, transform your mind. This translates into a philosophy of discarding the things in your home and your life that do not bring joy to you. Marie advises to start with an exercise in imagining what kind of home you would like to live in and the lifestyle you want. This will set you on the path to start a radical decluttering of your possessions and only keep those that fit into your imaginary life. It’s quite simple actually: with each item ask yourself if it sparks joy. If yes, you get to keep it; if no, you discard it mercilessly. That means getting rid of piles of stuff and Marie says you need to do it in one fell swoop, not room by room but by category like clothes, books & papers, photos & mementoes. You even have to pare down your storage; only keep what you love to see and use. A pared-down home equals a tidy, clean mind, according to Marie, and she promises it will transform your life. Do encourage yourself to repurpose those satin harem pants with price tag still attached you bought 20 years ago. It’s an illusion to think they will be back in style one of these days. If you are a skilled hoarder, the KonMari philosophy of drastic paring down will be a challenge. Minimalism is an acquired taste and to some people it feels cold and impersonal, almost too testosterone-filled. Like a lot of people, I like the lived-in look with plenty of flowers and ‘chotskes’, piles of books and magazines and soft cushions to invite relaxation and rejuvenation. After all, if they bring joy, would Marie Kondo not approve?.

GREENSPEAK Woman at Sea - Citizen Science in the Plastic Wars In October 2019 a sailing yacht will embark from the United Kingdom on a three year journey to raise awareness of the impacts of single use plastics in the world’s oceans. eXXpedition (note the clue of the double X chromosome in the title) is an all-woman scientific research mission which will cover almost 38,000 nautical miles in 30 voyages. eXXpedition was launched in 2014 when the extent of the ocean gyres (huge vortices of plastic garbage) became known. The largest and best known of these is the Pacific Gyre but in fact there are now five major gyres: The North Pacific, South Pacific, North Atlantic, South Atlantic and Indian Ocean. When plastic waste enters the ocean it drifts into and is captured in these gyres - systems of circular ocean currents formed by the Earth’s wind patterns and the forces created by the rotation of the planet. The Pacific gyre is estimated to cover 1.6 million square kilometers. Founded by experienced sailors Emily Penn and Lucy Gilliam, eXXpedition is a community of multidisciplinary female change-makers and inspiring global ambassadors who explore plastic pollution and its environmental and health impacts. I talked to mission leader Sally Earthrowl, who was a geography teacher at Dyatmika School in Bali for several years before joining eXXpedition. “As a geography teacher I was acutely aware of waste management problems. It took three years of working with the staff and students, but now Dyatmika is free of single use plastics and the students are very motivated. It’s The Water That Gets You How safe is the water in Bali? I recently met a couple visiting Bali. The man was not happy, “I’ve got Bali belly” he said. “It must have been that warung we went to last night”. “It’s usually the water that gets you” I replied. Years ago I had learned the hard way. When I first came to Indonesia in the 70’s I was visiting a piece of land up near Bogor. I ended up wading in a river and within hours had amoebic dysentery. I got very sick, lost 2 stones in weight and it took me 3 months to find a doctor who could cure me. Since then I have always been careful around water and, as a result, have gone for years without stomach problems. In contrast a friend of mine always has problems, “stop cleaning your teeth in the well water” I tell him. “I’m sure it was that warung” the man went on. “What did you eat?” I asked, “Fried rice” he replied. “Fried rice is freshly cooked in a hot wok and is usually pretty safe” I said, “let’s trace it back.” “What were you doing 4 hours before you started the symptoms?”. “We went to Tanah Lot, it was wonderful.” “Did you have anything to eat or drink?”. “No, nothing” he insisted. “What else did you do?” “We met a priest at the temple, he gave us holy water”. “He gave you holy water, did he put it in your hands and you sipped it?” “Yes” “It’s usually the water that gets you” I repeated. Most hotels have their own water treatment plant but if you are living in Bali you will need to take care. Some

water comes from wells and unless it has been treated the water cannot be trusted, you don’t know how deep the well is or whether the water is contaminated by groundwater from one of the thousands of leaking septic tanks and pig sties across the island. A recent case involved five villas in a complex with a shared well. Some of the residents complained of regular bouts of illness and we eventually got the water tested. It was found to be contaminated with faeces. In such a case it is often difficult to identify the source of contamination because ground water may have travelled a long way before entering the well. A well needs to be deep enough to get into clean water and it must be watertight for most of its depth to ensure that there is no seepage from groundwater near the surface.

If you are a person who is often sick and you haven’t taken out a large life insurance policy recently then you might consider whether you have a problem with your water supply. You can get a water sample lab tested if you think that may be necessary. A long term resident of Sanur often felt itchy after showering, the problem was worst in the dry season when the water level in his well was low. He moved to another house, the itching stopped and his health generally improved. He commented that going to the toilet was now a far more pleasant experience than it had been for many years!

Bores (borewells) are much better than wells as long as they are properly lined. They are usually much deeper than wells and are able to get down into cleaner water although they do tend to pick up mineral contamination from the rock.

If you want clean water in your home there are many filtration options available, some are very good, some are as useful as gills on a donkey and some will need you to get a mortgage to pay for them. There is a lot to consider so we will talk about it another time.

Many urban areas of Bali have a reticulated (town) water supply. The water supply is chlorinated and so is usually quite safe however it can be unreliable due to fluctuating pressure and the many leaks in the system which may allow ground water to enter and contaminate the water supply.

For many of us our water is pumped up to a storage tank but, if the tank has an open top (as many do), then birds and wildlife may leave you a nasty message in the water. These different sources of water are usually safe to wash in but take care, don’t clean your teeth in it, don’t get it in your mouth when you shower, don’t make ice cubes from it, if you wash the dishes make sure that the dishes are

Benny Santoso is a successful young foodpreneur who makes and sells tempeh at the organic markets in Ubud, Canggu and Sanur. A culinary school graduate, Benny turned away from a career as a chef to start his own small food business (IniTempe).

BENNY: Many Indonesians who go overseas make food that’s really Western not Indonesian. If you ask [most] Indonesians, they don’t know how how to make tempeh. My generation is encouraged to learn about new styles of cooking that are Western and we don’t care about the Indonesian stuff. A foreign chef said to me, ‘As an Indonesian, love your own cuisine, your own tradition, and after that you can go beyond it to try Western [cooking]. Because if you go overseas and foreigners ask you to cook Indonesian food and you cannot, you will feel really ashamed of yourself.’

BENNY: Just my natural personality. Also, I got a lot of experience from the hotel industry [about customer service]. BA: So what are your plans for the future? BENNY: I will be moving to Mambal soon – to get a bigger place and new machines for production. I want to empower the local community. So I hope I can teach them how to make tempe chips and help them with distribution. BA: Isn’t this creating possible competitors?

BA: How did you start selling at the organic market? BA: How did you first get interested in tempeh? BENNY: The idea of making tempeh [originally] came from my [high school] science teacher. My teacher fermented tempeh and put in chili flakes. I thought, ‘Oh that’s really cool.’ [Later] I was a culinary student at STP Hotel School in Nusa Dua. For graduation, my last project was making tempeh.

BENNY: I was already selling to Alami [Japanese restaurant]. Then I met Ibu Caroline [who helps organise the Ubud organic market]. She was interested in my product and came to my place first to check out my production. She saw my production was clean and was interested in having me sell at the organic market. That was the starting point. Then I met a lady who said, ‘Why don’t you sell at Canggu? There’s a market at Canggu.’ So now I just sell at the Saturday and Sunday markets.

BA: What gave you the idea of possibly making a business from it?

BENNY: For me, they are not competitors, because I will help with distribution. Right now I have only 2 Balinese staff. Its quite tough sometimes, as Balinese staff have a lot of ceremony [so they can’t always work.] So I found that I have to help the local community and the local community will help me, so there is a win-win solution. BA: Do you have like specific plans for growth or expansion, or other markets you want to tap into, say Jakarta? BENNY: I want to expand within Indonesia first and hopefully someone wants to help me for export overseas. Step by step, but I believe if we try to do our best and with passion, I think we can go beyond limits.

BENNY: After graduating, I took some time off and went to Ubud. That’s when I saw the [organic] market. There’s a healthy market also here in the Sanur area and one in Canggu. So there is good opportunity, for [selling] tempeh.

BA: I know you use GMO-free soybeans. Is your production limited by supply? BENNY: Not in Central Java but in Bali, supply is limited. Mostly, they grow rice here. Soy is a side crop. They only plant soy after they harvest rice to make the land fertile. They sell soy for steaming or seedlings. I have a connection with a teacher from the local agriculture college to get help asking local farmers to plant local soy beans [and bring back local soy production].

BA: How did you start? BENNY: I started making [tempeh] at Nusa Dua while working also in a restaurant, but I wasn’t happy. I felt like my heart was in Ubud. So I moved to Ubud, still making the tempeh. I got a new job but just worked for five days. I decided to resign and try to sell tempeh. But Sayan is not a good place for making tempeh because its too humid. So the fermentation sometimes failed.

BA: So you may actually help expand the soy market here in Bali?

BA: What conditions are best for tempeh making? BENNY: Yes, because while the soy bean market isn’t big here in Bali, the soy market [tofu, tempeh, soy milk] is big in Indonesia. [He is also experimenting with heritage plants native to Bali to make new flavors of tempeh.]

BENNY: The ideal is a temperature of 20 degree Celsius, but if you make tempeh in the rainy season, the fermentation will take a long time. I decided to move to the Denpasar area because it’s drier.

BA: How did you get involved with the Ubud Writers and the Ubud Food Festival?

BA: Did you grow up in a household where you learned to cook? BENNY: My family owns a small food [distribution] business in Solo, Central Java. BA: So you basically grew up with the outlook that food can be a good business. BENNY: Exactly. I was interested in culinary school because I liked to watch cooking demos on television - shows like MasterChef. I asked my mother [permission] to go to culinary school in Bali, but at first she said, ‘No, it’s too far, you don’t have family in Bali and being a cook is a tough job. Not a good career.’ However, I believe that if we do our best and with a passion, I think we can go beyond the limits. So I started to think about different careers I could have with culinary school, maybe being a seller of my own foods. BA: Why tempeh for you?

BA: How did your sambal and tempeh cookies come about [Benny’s newest products]? BENNY: My market got bored with just tempeh; they wanted ready-to-eat products. Because of my market [mostly foreigners], I have to make my products glutenfree. I tried to make biscuits because my mother is a baker. I had to make them by trial and error. My first batch was bitter and then the second batch was quite okay. I gave samples to my neighbor and then to my customers. My neighbor tried the tempeh bisuits and said, ‘Wow, this is really interesting!’ and she wanted to order them. BA: So you’re very responsive to your customers. Did they teach you this in culinary school or is this just your natural personality?

BENNY: I met [founder] Ibu Janet [DeNeefe] and she convinced me to give workshops on making tempeh. [Before they had a] tempeh maker [come] from Bogor but that is too far to come to Bali. And why not support the local community also, right? BA: So what do you enjoy most about that? BENNY: I enjoy it because I get to promote my country and especially my food heritage. Its about food diplomacy. I’m passionate about explaining to foreigners about our culture. It’s my heritage and and I’m really proud of it.

News about Vietjet Air’s plan to open a direct route from Ho Chi Minh City (HCMC) to Jakarta, and the inevitable question of whether or not the flight would feature the airline’s infamous bikini-clad stewardesses, has been going around since 2017 and now the controversial airline is back in the spotlight in Indonesia. The Vietnam-based airline says it’s finally launching routes to Indonesia, starting with a HCMC – Denpasar flight in March followed by a HCMC – Jakarta flight, before the end of this year. “We’ll start flying to Denpasar, Bali on March 2019. For the first six months, we’ll open four flights per week, and then we’ll continue to open daily flights,” Vietjet Air’s managing director Do Xuan Quang said Sunday, in a press release issued on Sunday by Indonesia’s Ministry of Tourism, as picked up by Detik. The Indonesian government has given their permission for the Vietnamese low-cost carrier to operate in the country, as long as they leave their bikinis at home. “I gave a requirement for them not to wear bikinis, because it’s considered as inappropriate in Indonesia,” Minister of Transportation Budi Karya Sumadi said Monday, as quoted by Detik. Since Vietjet Air launched in 2011, the company has only occasionally had their stewardesses don their trademark red bikinis for special events, such as on inaugural flights to beach destinations and on their company calendars. The airline had been reprimanded by the Vietnamese government for the promotional stunts. That said, those PR stunts have undoubtedly proved fruitful for the low cost carrier, which accounted for more than 40 percent of Vietnam’s domestic market share as of last year and has already made its CEO, Nguyen Thi Phuong Thao, the first female billionaire in the country. Trash Attack: Bali’s beaches are the worst they’ve been in 10 years, say authorities Every year, the wet season rains exasperates Bali’s garbage issues, washing up large quantities of organic and non-organic junk onto its shores. But according to the Badung Regency Environmental and Hygiene Service (DLHK), the ugly problem has reached a record high peak this year. The head of DHLK, I Putu Eka Merthawan, told local news outlet Kumparan that the volume of waste evacuated from the Badung coast recently has been the highest recorded in ten years, with 250 tons of waste being collected every day. Merthawan revealed that, in contrast, a typical rainy season beach haul would garner about 50 tons per day. The affected stretches include the popular tourist beaches of Kuta, Seminyak, Petitenget, Batu Belig, Canggu, and Jimbaran. Understandably, Bali’s visitors have expressed disappointment towards the cluttered coastlines. “I feel this beach is very dirty, and doesn’t match the photos I saw on the internet,” said Yuanhaiwei, a Chinese tourist, to the outlet. Yuanhaiwei had reportedly been looking forward to eating at Jimbaran Beach’s famous seafood shacks while taking in the usually beautiful scenery. Local reports say that plastic and wood have been dominating the pile-ups, though coconut shells, sandals and other miscellaneous debris have also been collected. The origin of the extraordinarily large volumes of garbage is still under debate, though Merthawan

suspects that some of it could have been carried from relatively long distances given the strong waves of late. “This is not a disaster for Badung alone, this is a national disaster. So, national garbage gathers in the sea and goes to Kuta beach. Badung is a victim of garbage coming from everywhere. People may clean the area but throw it into the sea, and so it runs to Kuta Beach,” he said, as quoted in Kumparan. Up until today, the DHLK continue to evacuate the garbage, assisted by 1,000 personnel, 45 trucks and 4 loader units.
