Sustainable and Practical: All-Terrain Bamboo Wheelchairs Indonesia lacks services and infrastructure for people with disabilities. This means that many children and adults, and particularly those living in villages where the rough terrain is not suitable for normal wheelchairs, are confined to their homes. To try to rectify this dire situation, Eco Living Bali, a supplier of sustainable products made from natural ingredients, and East Bali Bamboo Bikes, which falls under the East Bali Poverty Project that helps isolated communities, joined forces to make the very first all-terrain wheelchair in Southeast Asia. The prototype, which was ready in March this year, took around eight weeks to produce. As the parents of a disabled child, the issue of access has been dear to the hearts of the founders of Eco Living Bali, Brad and Twone Moreland. The inspiration for an all-terrain wheelchair came when the duo heard of the plight of a 12-year-old boy in North Lombok from Duncan Ward, the Founder of Classroom of Hope, an organization that helps to provide access to education for children in developing countries. “Nasrudin lost his standard wheelchair in the 2018 earthquake and had to drag himself through the dirt to get to school. We decided that we had to help him get a wheelchair that would withstand the rough terrain of the village, and that’s how the idea of an all-terrain wheelchair was born,” says Brad. After numerous brainstorming sessions, the team decided to build their prototype from materials that are easy to source and repair in Indonesia. The wheelchair frame, laminated seat, backrest, foot rest and rear basket are all

made from bamboo sourced from the slopes of Mount Agung in Ben village. The wheelchair is protected with environmentally-friendly lacquer and sealant to ensure that it withstands rough weather conditions. The decision was also made to use mountain bike wheels suitable for steep or uneven terrain. “As there is already a short supply of metal wheelchair parts in Bali, we wanted to find an alternative solution, and as owners of an eco store, we wanted to find a sustainable solution. As bamboo is found in abundance in Bali and throughout Asia, a bamboo wheelchair could be easily repaired by a bamboo artisan in a village,” Brad says, adding that each wheelchair has to be custom made to fit the beneficiary’s requirements. Up to date, Eco Living Bali and East Bali Bamboo Bikes have funded and built three bamboo wheelchairs. The first wheelchair, or the prototype, is currently on display in the Eco Living Bali shop in Kerobokan. The two other wheelchairs have been handed over to those in need. Nasrudin, who was the inspiration behind the project, received the second wheelchair, while the third wheelchair was donated to 15-year-old Nengah Macika, the son of one of the East Bali Bamboo Bikes craftsmen from Ban Village. “We have a growing list of underprivileged children and adults in Bali and Lombok who require all-terrain wheelchairs, and we are currently seeking funding to make them,” says Brad. “We are initially only targeting Bali and Lombok, however, we plan to expand to other islands soon and then hopefully the rest of Asia.” As the issue of access for people with disabilities is close to

Ben and Twone’s hearts, they do not make any profit from this venture. As such, Eco Living Bali urgently requires funding to build more wheelchairs. Each wheelchair sponsor will receive a certificate and a photo of the wheelchair their contribution helps to build. Those who sponsor an entire wheelchair will have their name or logo placed on the chair.

Nengah Macika’s Story Macika was a healthy baby until three months of age when he developed high fever and suffered several seizures. Since then, Macika’s growth and mobility have been affected. He is also non-vocal and struggles to communicate with his family. Until 2004, when the East Bali Poverty Project established monthly parent-baby health posts in neighboring Cegi, there were no health facilities near Ben village, where Macika lives. In 2005, the East Bali Poverty Project found a volunteer professional massage therapist who trained Macika’s parents to give him daily massages, but he has shown little improvement. While Macika’s mobility remains restricted, his new all-terrain bamboo wheelchair means that he can now get around more freely. www.ecolivingbali.com https://www.eastbalipovertyproject.org https://www.eastbalibamboobikes.com By Anita Copyright © 2019 Bali Advertiser You can read all past articles of BA Feature Article at www.BaliAdvertiser.biz

GARDEN DOCTOR Chlorophyll in Plants and Diet - The benefits of Parsley and Anything Green Hi I’ve been reading about the health benefits associated with the celery juice craze, it’s been everywhere lately in the news, problem is most places in Bali only offer fresh fruit juices. Celery is one of the more expensive greens to buy, I was wondering if it is feasible to grow my own or are there any other alternative vegetables to grow and juice for maximum health benefit? Regards Nicki. As the years roll on, so to do the superfood fads. People claiming to discover things which have always existed. I say, beware of the ‘Instafad’ and those who peddle them. Last year it was kale and goji before that. So, now this year it’s celery! If I was running the show next year it’ll be parsley but unfortunately for Instagram I’m not signed up - more likely fortunately if the truth be known!

Haven’t you noticed that celery stalks in the store are a pale shade of green, transitioning to white at the base? That’s not how it looks in my garden and that is the heart of my gripe with the celery food faddists. Real home-grown celery is a chlorophyll filled deeper green - better said ‘chlorofilled’ perhaps!

cells. It has been shown to stop the division of breast cancer cells and kills existing ones. It can also kill existing colon cancer cells.

A green juice should have chlorophyll levels at a premium, yet your average store-bought celery is deficient somewhat. For health it’s much better to be juicing some parsley which is especially high in chlorophyll, and also extremely bitter - but hey, no pain no gain! But you can always just throw a few sprigs in with a watermelon juice, you’ll barely taste it, but the benefits will be there as parsley is extremely nutrient dense - a tiny amount goes a long way.

According to the Oregon State University, some of the most chlorophyll dense raw vegetables are (mg per cup): • Parsley - 38 • Spinach - 23.7 • Cress - 15.6 • Green beans - 8.3 • Arugula (rocket) - 8.2 • Leeks - 7.7 Parsley tops the list - so let’s talk about its apigenin content while we’re here! Preclinical research shows that apigenin which is found in parsley, retards mesothelioma cancer cell development. Natural compounds are often shown to interrupt cancer cells and their spread. Over 50% of chemotherapy drugs come directly from plant sources or were developed in the lab by synthesizing a plant compound into a drug. Dried parsley, with 13,000 mg of apigenin per 100 grams is one of the most abundant natural sources. Fresh parsley is abundant also, with 225 to 300 mg per 100 grams.

But despite that, one thing is for sure - I’m not trying to sell you anything, get likes or increase my subscribers, so read on without suspicion. Now while I’m all for people growing their own fruit and vegetables, just beware of the fads and fashionable foods! A healthy balanced diet is the most important thing. I find it amusing that the celery juice junkies are usually the same people posing on their Instagram feed next week, espresso martini in hand as the sun sinks low from their daybed vantage point - which could be anywhere on Bali’s west coast. But then again, what would I know…I’m not on Instagram right? But geez I love to have the occasional rant. Look, the truth is, any green vegetable juice will no doubt have health benefits, it’s just that I take issue with the misinformation of the celery nuts. Yes, celery juice is good for you - much better than a coke, beer or cocktail. But it will always be so much better if you grow your own. A lot of these people talk the talk, but do they walk the walk? Where do they get their celery from, and why is that important? Well, chlorophyll is the key and I’ll explain why it matters for celery, in particular. Chlorophyll is the green pigment that gives plants their colour and is an extremely beneficial nutrient to humans. To simplify, chlorophyll converts solar energy into plant sugars through photosynthesis - without which human life on earth would not be possible! The benefits or green juice come not only from the vitamins and minerals - but the chlorophyll content also is key. Regarding celery, most people are not aware that store bought celery is a heavily sprayed crop, so enjoy those chemicals with your juice! Another biggie people don’t realise is that commercially grown celery is ‘blanched’ in the fields a few weeks before harvest whether it’s organic or not. The term ‘blanched’ in this respect refers to the mounding up of soil around the stalks or other methods of light deprivation so that only the tops remain exposed in the final weeks of growth. Why is this done? Well, ‘blanching’ celery makes it sweeter, reducing bitterness, whilst also rendering it less stringy and more tender to the bite - but who cares if you pulverise it into juice anyway? But what I really need to mention is that the undesirable side effects of ‘blanching’ are reduced nutrients and a lowered chlorophyll content!

If you’re a sceptic, do some of your own research to uncover the facts.

To get a 10 mg dose as used in the clinical trial by Prof. Harald Hoensch of the University of Frankfurt, you would only need one tablespoon of raw chopped parsley per day, otherwise sprinkle a little dried parsley onto your food. Other sources of apigenin include grapefruit, peppermint, thyme, celery, and even chamomile tea.

But as for store-bought celery as the new superfood? Sorry, I’m not buying it! Not to dis celery, I am a fan of it and I grow it as well - it’s required for stock base in soups - in which case who needs it blanched anyway? I’m just saying that celery with pale green stalks is an inferior product in my opinion - a pale imitation to the real thing. By the way, when juicing anything include the fibre by using a blender not a juicer - expel the fibre and there goes all the beneficial cellulose with it! So back to chlorophyll - How will you know if your foods are packed with it, and what is so great about it? Well, any green coloured leafy vegetable or herb is bound to be rich in chlorophyll, think parsley, kale, wheat grass, spring onions, spinach etc. The word chlorophyll is derived from the Greek words: Chloros (meaning green) and phyllon (meaning leaf) - no more explanation needed! The health benefits of chlorophyll are extensive - here’s a quick rundown. Chlorophyll detoxifies the liver, alkalizes the blood, boosts immunity, regulates iron levels, assistes healing, regulates blood sugar, activates metabolism, aids weight loss and has anti-ageing effects on the skin. Research has shown chlorophyll to retard cancerous tumour growths. It slows down the progression of lung cancer, allowing other healing agents to eliminate the already present cancer

The apigenin that is so abundant in parsley has been found to have remarkable anti-inflammatory and antioxidant effects as well. Parsley also has more vitamin K than kale, with just 2 tablespoons of raw parsley containing 155 percent of the RDA. Vitamin K is known as the blood vitamin. The more I write the more I side with parsley over celery, though in reality a little bit of everything good is usually the way to go. Parsley is just so potently good for you that you can’t afford not to have it in your diet - so next time eat your garnish! In conclusion, grow and juice whatever green leafy vegetable you like, I just think that parsley is so good because of the health benefits and the fact that it will effectively grow on its own, flowering, attracting bees, easily self-seeding, multiplying and sprouting up in rock crevices and pavement - hence its common name - rock celery. Quite possibly parsley will be the next years fad - especially if I can have anything to do with it….now how about that Instagram account!

TOKO BUKU Reviews of English language books on Indonesia

Everyday Balinese By I Gusti Made Sutjaja Everyday Balinese is a concise and user-friendly guide to the Balinese language targeted to anyone who wishes to learn colloquial Balinese. There are 23 lessons (not exercises) in this course book, each with a dialog that centers around daily life. These realistic beginner conversations are a great way to learn Balinese as it is really spoken. Though tending to be a bit dry, the dialogs are easy to follow and cover realistic situations. The dialogs are presented twice in two different speech levels consisting of almost entirely different words. Depending upon whom you are talking to, separate vocabularies are used in Balinese. The first version, denoted “A,” represents the lumrah or common tongue. The second, denoted “B,” is alus or refined Balinese. There are actually six different speech levels from the highest alus singgih used to address priests and rajas down to the lowest forms, Bahasa Kasar (common languages), which includes not only lumrah but the andap and wake everyday languages used all over Bali by children, young people and for some reason by the inhabitants of northern Buleleng District. Each lesson on food, greetings, shopping, money, finding your way, etc. contains a list of words in both lumrah and alus forms, followed by their Indonesian and English translations. In these sections, you’re able to compare the different words and expressions of the two speech levels in column format. These vocabulary lists repeat and reinforce the words and expressions used in the dialogs. The most difficult part of learning Balinese are the different speech levels, even though they follow much the same grammatical rules. The differences lie in word choice. For example, there are three different words for “eat,” depending upon the circumstances and who you are addressing. In the most refined language (alus), it is ngerayun. In the second level (lumrah), it is ngajeng. In the lowest speech level, the word for “eat” is ngamah. Lumrah words are used when participants of equal social status are conversing. It reflects intimacy and informality among its users. Alus words are

associated with distance and formality among users. If you talk with a friend or sibling, you use lumrah and when you speak with someone you know but not closely, you also use lumrah. But if you talk to a priest or a high government official, you use alus to show respect. Since Westerners mostly deal with young hotel staff, warung proprietors, transport providers, villagers but not mayors, rajas, judges, etc., they should put the emphasis on mastering lumrah because it’s easier to learn, you can use it everywhere and everyone understands it. A Westerner will even be forgiven for using lumrah when addressing royalty. On the other hand, not every Balinese understands the alus speech level. The book is not without its inconsistencies that confuse alus, lumrah and other speech levels. In Lesson 4, be is referred to as a common Balinese word meaning meat (be pusih-fish; be celeng-pork; be siap-chicken, etc,). Yet in Lesson 3, the table of animal names indicates that be is a high Balinese word. In one lesson, cicing (dog) is classified as common but in another, it’s considered high Balinese; katak (frog) is listed as both alus and lumrah words but actually the more common lumrah word for frog is dongkang. In Lesson 7, paek sajan is more usual than paek pesan. Sik (one), dua (two), nem (six), pitu (seven) and sia (nine) are more widely used than a number of words for those numbers listed in the Ordinal Numbers section of the Appendices.

C/E/G-22 May 19

Though Balinese is difficult to learn, if you are highly motivated and apply yourself, you are able to master at least a working knowledge of the language. The best and easiest way is to engage in conversation with Balinese with the aid of Everyday Balinese. This holistic approach of actively going into the field and learning with the people is highly effective if it’s done on a daily basis. You need only to commit to learn a minimum number of words each day, always taking note of the way to pronounce each word. For example, the words Dija? (From where?) sounds similar to Kija? (Where are you going?) but their meanings are quite distinct from each other. Not a dauntingly thick book, the page design is neat with a clean serifed typeface that’s easy to read. There are no pictures or photographs cluttering the pages. The book has a one-page pronunciation guide in the front and a handy 20-page dictionary at the end arranged alphabetically by Balinese, followed by Indonesian and English translations. For anyone who is going to spend any length of time on Bali or who is keen on really connecting with the people, Everyday Balinese is a worthwhile investment that will pay for itself time and again in the quality of your experiences. Everyday Balinese: Your Guide to Speaking Balinese Quickly and Effortlessly in a Few Hours by I Gusti Made Sutjaja, Tuttle Publishing 2009, ISBN-978-080-484-0453, 192 pages, dimensions 13.5cm x 20.5cm.

BOOMER CORNER The Benefits of Cultivating Gratitude Rice paddies stretch out from our house. Flooded now, they reflect the sky with puff-ball clouds that turn pink then orange, gliding to shades of white as the morning sun rises. Chickens and white herons peruse the paddies foraging for insects and tiny critters that come with the flooding. Occasionally a heron flies right towards me as I sit on the veranda writing. It glides up over the roof at the last minute, its gray feet tucked neatly against its white body. How rare - a closeup view of the underside of a kokokan. I count all of these as blessings. Gratitude arises filling my

several years ago and just reading my entries brought that warmth to my heart again. Those positive feelings had endured and created new ones.

Choose one thing and if more come along give thanks for those too. It can be as simple as a hug from a friend, a compliment on your hair, or a beautiful view.

This morning I’m grateful for not just the herons in the rice paddies but also for being a contributor to Boomer Corner and being a part of the Bali ex-pat community.

The important thing here is to do it every day. This doesn’t take time. It’s easy and science is showing that positive emotions create lasting effects. The Benefits of Positive Emotions Negative emotions such as fear or anger are a natural part of our instinctual survival techniques. We see a snake, a car coming at us, or a large coconut over our heads, and fear focuses our energy to avoid the threat and save ourselves. We have a disagreement with a friend and our anger consumes us well after we’ve had the confrontation. This is the problem with our habitual experience with negative emotions. They stay with us, clouding what is happening in our present moment experience. While we can’t avoid these emotions, because they are a natural part of us to ensure our survival, we can cultivate positive emotions, which have a lasting effect on our brains and our everyday lives.

chest with warmth. My eyes smile. Gratitude is a Reset Button In our everyday lives, it’s easy to get caught up in the drama of the news, the challenges facing us and our families, dealing with anxiety, and concerns about our aging bodies. Gratitude can seem hidden. And yet gratitude is a safety zone and a respite from our hectic world. It’s a way to take a deep breath and just be for the sake of being.

Research done at the University of North Carolina has found that positive emotions such as joy, contentment, gratitude, and love open our minds to more possibilities in our lives. Negative emotions narrow that field to a thin focus. One of the things I’m most grateful for is that gratitude comes easily for me. It has been with me most of my life even in the hard times - although admittedly, less frequently. But not everyone finds this feeling easy and this is where a technique comes in handy.

If Alzheimer’s is in your life, check out Susan’s book Piece by Piece: Love in the Land of Alzheimer’s, available at Ganesha Bookstore, Ubud, or on Amazon.

Gratitude Techniques

When I was caring for my husband who had Alzheimer’s and life seemed bleak, some event would pull me back to gratitude and the light. It might have been as simple as a dragonfly landing on my hand or seeing a rainbow in a dewdrop caught on a banana leaf. Gratitude brings us back to the present moment where fear and anxiety don’t exist. It acts like a reset button to pull us out of despair.

Robert Emmons, the world’s leading scientific expert on gratitude, has studied gratitude for over a decade and written extensively about it. He suggests that for people challenged in feeling gratitude that they practice grateful emotions that include smiling, saying thank you, and writing letters of gratitude. The mere practice will cultivate real feelings.

Cultivate Gratitude

He also suggests nine other ways to cultivate gratitude including keeping a gratitude journal where you write down daily what you’re thankful for. I came across one I’d started

If gratitude doesn’t come spontaneously, you can cultivate

She had some health problems which were manageable and she would probably have made a full recovery.

Suicide warning signs • A sense of hopelessness or no hope for the future. • Isolation or feeling alone - “No one understands me”. • Aggressiveness and irritability - “Leave me alone”. • Possessing lethal means - medication, weapons. • Negative view of self - “I am worthless”. • Drastic changes in mood and behaviour. • Frequently talking about death - “If I died would you miss me?”. • Self-harming behaviours like cutting.

Share how you feel with someone you trust and feel comfortable with, a family member, teacher, doctor or other health professional. Try and think about it as any other conversation. You can describe what has happened, how you feel and what help you need. It’s best to be direct so that they understand how you feel. Be prepared for their reaction. Often people who learn that someone is suicidal can be quite confused and emotional at first. Just keep talking and together you can find a way through it. Ask your friends/ family member to help you find support in person, online, over the phone. Understand that others do care. It is important to have support from your friends but if you tell them about your suicidal thoughts you cannot expect them to keep it a secret. They want to be able to help you stay safe and that usually means calling in extra help. There are few if any support centres for expatriates suffering from mental health issues in Indonesia or Bali. Restaurant & Food

Update

but I know of no other stand alone restaurant that features them as BIKU does. It made this place an overnight standout and on almost everyone’s must-visit list. They don‘t just do a High Tea but a variety of them [Traditional English, Asian, Kid’s]. Not long after I first experienced a High Tea at Biku I happened to be in Singapore for a few days so thought I would compare it with what was then considered to be the ultimate in High Teas, at the famous Raffles. What a disappointment that was. First queuing for ages just to pay and take part, then forced to select items from a buffet that had been prepared in the kitchens many hours before, some sandwich fingers [very sparingly filled] already drying out, others soggy from excessive refrigeration, plus a few dry pastries, then trying to find a spare chair at the mini tables ignoring the debris from previous diners that had yet to be cleared away. All in all it was a disgusting and pathetic valuefor–money experience, and as compared to the elegant, fun, homely atmosphere at Biku, on Jln. Petitenget, there was only one winner, but then Bali had achieved a level of dining excellence and variety envied by the whole world prior to this sad pandemic. Biku not only does High Teas, they also offer interesting breakfasts, lunches and all day snacks that include the ever-popular old fashioned cup cakes and that Aussie standard The Pavlova [pictured]. The tea menu itself reads like a classic wine list. It is an experience not to be missed.

Ryoshi is known to all in Bali, their Seminyak location has

been one of those long-lived institutions of high quality cheap dining for many years. Branches in Tuban, Sanur and Ubud do the same. Many places in Bali sell sushi and sashimi but no one even comes close to serving the thousands of individual portions that Ryoshi, do every day. To my mind one of the secrets of raw fish products must be freshness, that is where Ryoshi must have it over the rest. My favourite serve of sushi is their Pisang selection, 12 individual pieces for a total of $7, a fraction of what the cost would be back home in Australia….and fresh! Very popular also are their Maki Rolls, the Rainbow Maki is studded with a variety of seafood and cucumber, wrapped in seaweed and sushi rice. Their menu is very comprehensive but my latest discovery [even though the Japanese have been eating it for 1500 years] is Konnyaku Pirikira, the amazing Konnyaku is only eaten in Japan and is a jelly-like substance made from a potato which is, strangely, only native to Indonesia, and an extract from eggshells. This results is a substance that is low in calories, very rich in minerals and ‘through the roof’ in dietary fibre. As it is sautéed in chilli it also has a bit of fire that stays on your lips for some time after. Beach Garden is an organic kitchen found on Jln.Pantai Batu Bolong, Canggu. It is open for dine-in, takeaway or home delivery. Breakfasts include all the usual egg combos plus gluten free pancakes [with assorted tropical fruits] and a Roasted Vegetables Omelette. The Superfood Bowl consists of fruits plus coconut chia pudding, goji berries, cahews, cacao nibs, mint leaves and honey. Healthy lunch starters can be Falafel Sliders or a Raw Pad Thai. Pasta can be a Linguine with lentil bolognaise, or a Mushroom Risotto. For mains there are Jackfruit Curry [Indian style], Ahi Tuna Poke Bowl or Grilled Butterfish. Finish with a Vegan Carrot Cake or a Raw Banoffee Pie.

Aperitif still leads the way with its home delivery of fine

dining options every weekend. On offer this week are mains of Salad Nicoise, Chicken Basquaise, Moroccan Lamb Shank and Beef Bourguignon. All mains come with a starter and one dessert. You can also order a slice of their special Pate to enjoy with your wine.

Boy N Cow, Jln Raya Kerobokan has now re-opened for

in-house dining and you can also still purchase their dry-aged meats, with home delievery from their Meat Shop. All the meat is dry-aged for at least 28 days. This includes grain-fed Black Angus [strip loin, rib-eye, porterhouse and even Tomahawk steaks of 1,000gm], Wagyu [Australian strip loin]. Also available are 150gm hamburger patties. The reopening is with strict social distancing and accordingly dining is in three distinct sittings; from 5.00 – 6.30, 6.30 – 8.00 and then 8.00 till close. However pre bookings are essential so that the social distancing can be enforced.

La Familia is Spanish on Jln. Dhyana Pura, Semiinyak.

Home delivery is available via Gojek’s Go Food. The favourite dishes include Albondigas [meat balls], Galician Style Octopus [sprinkled with paprika, sea salt and parsley], or Octopus grilled with potato parmentier, Spanish versions of the Greek Moussaka, Chicken or Prawn Croquettes, and the potato filled Spanish Omelette. Sundays only you can pre-order one of their Seafood Paellas. For more information see our website: www.balieats.com

Alternative Voice Goodbye Holly Golightly, Goodbye Marlboro Man... One of the more solitary small pleasures I enjoy throughout the week is settling down to a good read with the Weekend FT in a café serving half decent coffee. Apart from the cringingly ghastly “How to Spend it”, the magazine supplement written by FT hacks with leaden wit and obvious contempt for their readers - by definition themselves possessing no style of their own and in need of being told “where to get it”, the rest of the newspaper provides some first rate long form and investigative journalism covering life in general , beyond the financial. Since the FT content is behind a pay wall and I have no interest in the weekday newspaper itself, it’s not worth my stumping up for a subscription. Fortunately for me the weekend print edition is usually on sale at Periplus bookshops around Bali.

In this instance, I just adjusted my chair so I had my back to the man and instead of resuming my reading, forgot about the vapours and fell into a reverie upon life and tobacco over past decades. One way or another, smoker or not, tobacco affected us all. Its aroma and its advertisement, an ever-present factor in our lives. The habit has been around a long time. King James 1st of England (1603-25) not only fulminated against the noxious weed but cut off the head of the man who brought it back from the Americas. It was the introduction of cigarettes, which really kicked tobacco industry into the big league, on a par with oil, coal and transportation. By the 1930s smoking cigarettes was the social norm. It was permitted and catered to almost everywhere. The whole world stank of it. We did, so did our clothes and our homes.

On one occasion, seated at a table on the deck of the Starbucks in Renon Plaza, engrossed in a good read trying to control the flyaway pages of my newspaper I was enveloped in a cloud of smoke. I was partly aware that a dapper Indonesian man in his early thirties had arrived and sat down at an adjoining table, put down his coffee, opened his lap top, and positioned his handphone together with some other device alongside. Preparing to be irked and ready to rustle the pages of my broadsheet ostentatiously enough to attract attention for a warm-up death glare, I realised that the smoke didn’t actually reek of tobacco, as I had automatically assumed it would. As I was registering this, the man raised a small expensive-looking rectangular black and silver object to his mouth and took a toke. Upon exhale an astonishingly copious cloud of vapour billowed forth, was taken by the wind toward and past myself, on to envelop other tables nearby, only dissipating on the far side of the deck. Impressive in its way. What kind of a storm cloud, I wondered, would a party of half-a-dozen such tokers emit? What about the proverbial smoke-filled back rooms be like? Would they be able to see other? It wasn’t that I was completely unaware. I knew smoking had evolved and that the tobacco barons had developed new ways to attract and addict a younger clientele in the delivery of nicotine, while extending their questionable business ethics into other less lethal areas of business. In fact, I had even read about just that very thing in a previous issue of the FT, to the effect that the big tobacco majors were now concentrating on e-cigarettes and vaping, sales of which now stood at some US$16 billion and expected to treble to over $40 billion in four years. The only clouds on that horizon being a growing international movement to regulate the sale of these products.

We just didn’t realise it. In hindsight one has has to wonder how a non-smoker managed to get through life in such a tobacco-ridden environment. Think of the allure of a beautiful and elegant woman smoking a cigarette, a not uncommon and powerful image back then. As a redblooded non-smoking man how in reality, if your dreams came true, would you be able to make love to that woman? And don’t let’s be gender specific here – it works everywhich way. By 1950 the British Medical Association( BMA)sounded the death knell for tobacco’s glory days, announcing conclusive evidence to show that cigarettes caused lung cancer. To prove the point King George VI of England died of lung cancer in 1952 at the age of 56. Not long after his daughter made a point of revoking the Royal Seal of Approval carried by Benson & Hedges and other British brands. She had good cause to believe the BMA. Nonetheless there followed a vicious 50-year campaign of huge mendacity waged by Big Tobacco to deny the reality, that cigrette smoking was the second greatest killer in the world after road accidents.

NC/Ho/U-11 Sept 19

In the days when I smoked it was only two or three cigarettes day, unless I was drinking. Then I chain-smoked. When they banned smoking inflight by the early 1980s I was happy. I could stop smoking for years at a time. Trouble was - easy to quit, easy to start. I never liked smoking in and around food so lighting-up after a meal was no big loss in restaurants. In fact I reserve a special place in hell for the affected swine who light a cigar when other people are eating. The more expensive the cigar, the more it stank. Since my late 40s I’ve smoked very little and not at all in the past decade. Whatever the case, the whole paraphenalia in and around smoking affected us. When I first started smoking I went up-market, Benson & Hedges in their red and gold tin, Balkan Sobranie Black Russian or enticingly foreign like Gauloises and Gitanes. Then settling down to Senior Service or Players and a spell rolling my own in 60s. By the mid 70’s I had pretty much settled down to Benson & Hedges gold or Marlboro Light, which was when I finally graduated to tipped cigarettes. Like publishing, the British and American tobacco barons exercised dual dominion over the world when it came to international brands, so I never really got into American cigarettes, but somewhat familiar with the ‘jetplane’ brands of the 50s and 60s (Rothmans, Stuyvesant, Pall Mall, etc.), until the advent of Marlboro Man that is. One phase I observed with interest and faint contempt was the early 70s fashion branding of cigarettes in huge packs by Cartier, Dunhill, Davidoff and the like, inevitably accompanied by a gold or silver bric lighter from Dupont or other purveyor of cadet luxe. For most of us I suspect, looking back at the golden age of tobacco, now that the stench is gone, is a pleasant exercise in nostalgia. We grew up and matured alongside it all - the packaging, the accoutrements, the advertisements, the sponsorships – all designed to entice. By the time I looked up the man with the laptop and his vape had gone. You know what? E-cigarettes etc. kill only a handfull of people a year, so on the scale of lethality I reckon folks can be left in peace to take a small toke of nicotine in the great outdoors, without the heavy hand of the law being invoked. That said, I do wonder a bit about the involuntary sharing airborne particles lung to lung.

Kulture Kid What Does ‘Pan’ or ‘Men’ Mean in a Balinese Person’s Name?

As you may have noticed, Balinese are the ultimate family people, close to even their extended family, and even their own community are often referred to as family even though there is no blood line. Not only are Balinese family people, they are also deeply proud of their children, to the point that parents are often known by the name(s) of their offspring. This is what the suffix ‘Pan’ or ‘Men’ refers to. It’s an abbreviation of Bapan and Memen respectively. Bapa in Balinese means father and meme means mother. The ‘n’ is added to show possession. After Pan or Men then follows the name of one of their children. My son’s name is Gede Semara, which means that I would most probably be nicknamed ‘Pan Semara’. Balinese normally choose the second name rather than the birth order name (e.g. Gede, Wayan, Made, Kadek, Nengah, Nyoman, Komang, Ketut, Agung, Gusti, Sang Ayu, Ida Ayu, Ida Bagus etc) so as not to confuse. For me this demonstrates how a parent kind of loses some of their own adult identity as soon as they become a parent – focus is much more on their offspring (and therefore the future of their family) rather than themselves. Sociologically speaking, this is reflective of the anonymity of the individual in Balinese society and the importance of the group, or, in this case, an extension of the self. Personally, I’ve noticed that these terms are more common in the villages these days than in the cities and tourism areas. In fact, in more modern families that are well known in society, particularly if they are celebrities, their children are sometimes given the ‘family name’ (actually it’s normally just their last name as Balinese don’t traditionally have a family name) of the famous parent. This is both an influence of Western culture on Balinese naming habits and also so that others know that their children have a famous parent or parents. I’d predict, that as with the adoption of Western names, more and more Balinese will pass on their last name to their offspring, copying again something from outside of their culture rather than continuing with their own tradition. The Frugal Balinist Q Live healthier cheaper

Why battle traffic to visit doctors for health consultations that do not necessitate therapy or a medical procedure? Have you ever tried to contact a doctor by telephone? Thankfully, a growing number of Indonesian physicians are using social media, especially blogs and Twitter, to offer a wide diversity of reliable non-diagnostic health advice and even live-chat services to thousands of followers who ask questions not just about nutrition, children’s health, diet, sexual health, cholesterol or diabetes, but also about deeper medical issues. Tanya Dokter (Ask the Doctor) and KlikDokter let people send questions about health problems that are answered by general practitioners and specialists, usually within 24 hours. Optimal medical examinations cannot be carried out online, so doctors will not make diagnoses, as they don’t want to bear any legal liability. Symptoms of a disease might be misread if they are being described through live-chat or email. If a question indicates the need for further examination, patients will be advised to see a physician in person to ensure accuracy.

Q Island-wide hikes

Leading up to the upcoming major holidays of Galungan, Kuningan (starting 05Jan19), and Tahun Baru (New Years), the city streets of every district in Bali will be blocked off to make way for 24-hour night markets (pasar sengol) where all manner of snacks, clothing, toys, shoes, tools, cheap appliances and sundries are sold at local prices (if you bargain). The very best food stalls will be packed. During Manis Kuningan, the day after Kuningan, families escape en masse to crowded high-altitude environments like Tirtagangga, Kebon Raya, Kintamani and Yeh Panes. This is cockfighting season (musim tajen) and card-playing (ceki) season when rural Balinese families are financially stressed because of menfolks’ gambling losses (best time to buy cows, pigs and used motorcycles and cars!). Matahari, Ramayana, Robinson and Hardy’s department stores offer clearance sales (cuci gudang) of 25% to 75% off. At Bali Galleria (Kuta), Mal Galleria (Kuta) and Bali Collection (Nusa Dua), numerous promos are offered by department stores and cinemas.

Q Go electric!

Join the Green Energy movement to reduce your carbon footprint in our world. Electric ebikes (sepeda listrik) save fuel costs and reduce air pollution. These “pedalassist” bikes with integrated electric motors - a cross between a bicycle and a motorcycle - allow the rider greater speed with less effort. On motorized bikes you can easily pedal uphill. A selection of ebikes and

escooters can be seen in the Selis Bali showroom in Denpasar. Don’t forget to ask the friendly and helpful manager for a thorough list of what needs to be done for maintenance and to get the ebike ready for the required annual inspection. Selis Bali does service calls, too. Average cost of models is around Rp20 juta. With an installment payment plan, you can drive away for as little as Rp400,000 down. Address: Jl. Teuku Umar 216, Dauh Puri Kauh, Denpasar, tel: 0361-474-8205. Hours 9 am-6 pm.

Q Good sense for The Wet

To keep mosquitoes from laying eggs, add a handful of neem leaves to small pond or pools. Neem leaves will help stop mosquitoes from breeding, but won’t harm other pond creatures. Frogs, lizards and fish, especially tilapia fish, will feed on mosquito eggs and larvae. *Excess water in the wet season can be stored in ponds to prevent water laying stagnant on the ground. Rainwater can be stored in tanks, but usually tanks will not hold all of it. Extra water can be stored in the ground, in ponds and by trees that store water in their roots, trunk, branches and leaves. Dig a shallow trench around your house in places where the rain falls, then fill with gravel. Use the soil from digging the trench to make the ground higher so that the water flows away from the house. This will help keep the house dry during the wet season. Water can be run to vegetable gardens, compost pits, etc. Edges of garden pathways can also function as swales to collect and hold water. Dig new holes for trees, but leave them empty to fill with rain, which will soften the soil so that when trees are planted at the end of the wet season, they will grow better.

Q Beware the Tick.

Ticks attack dogs in between their toes and in their ears. Brush down and wash your dog with watered down shampoo regularly. Introduce Bravecto into his food which you can buy for Rp90,000/bottle from pet shops or Hardy’s. You’ll get around 4-5 months of treatments from one bottle, enough for two dogs. For animals, the Balinese use the tick powder Bedak Doris (Rp24,000-Rp45,000 depending on size bottle) and natural remedies. For example, they first remove the tick, then slice a lemon which they apply to the wound. For cows and kerbau (ox), the Balinese scrub vinegar (cuka; Rp1,500 for small bottle) onto the tick bite. They also feed their livestock whole papaya leaves which turns the animal’s blood bitter, repelling ticks. Alternatively, Sunset Vet (Kuta: tel. 0361-934-8915; Ubud: tel. 0361-975296) for Rp100,000 will send someone around to give your dog a shot and apply treatment against ticks. BAWA is also able to give good advice as regards ticks.

conscious Javanese shoppers are always parked along the road outside. *Pie Susu is a small cake and popular Bali souvenir. It’s cheaper to buy at the factory itself on Jalan Nangka in Denpasar at Rp1,500 each. *Pusat Pernak Pernik in Ceking village near Pasar Sukawati is the place to buy bracelets, all kinds of art and decorations. *Bali Pulina in Buleleng, North Bali, is the bargain place to buy famous Balinese civet coffee. *Indonesian tourists buy Seniman brand coffee which sells at the low local price. The Balinese themselves prefer to just drink kopi palsu (adulterated coffee) like Warkop, Bali’s cheapest coffee that is mixed with ground corn and dried rice. They are not fond of real coffee like Westerners, mostly because of its high cost. Middle class Indonesians drink the Kopi Bubuk Banyuatis brand from Singaraja. The upper class favors the Kopi Bali Cap Kupu Kupu Bola Dunia brand.

Q Make shoes last!

Keep shoes on a shoetree to give perspiration and other moisture time to completely dry out. If your shoes get wet, stuff them with newspaper and let them dry slowly. Indonesians dry them in the sun. Store shoes in dry area where they can get fresh air and not mold. Give them a break; don’t wear the same pair every day. After each wearing, clean shoes with soft, dry cloth. Keep leather shoes lubricated and protected by polishing with Kiwi shoe polish (Rp16,000) regularly. Most liquid polishes contain little or no wax and may cause shoes to dry out.

Q Industry killer

Recent government regulations are very unfavorable and clearly do not support the solar industry as it imposes extra charges to people who want grid-connected solar installation. Solar panel owners are now losing 35% of their generation and make it literally impossible to sell solar panels in Indonesia. The new regulation, an alternative energy industry killer to protect PLN, is creating a real headache for everyone, seriously impact initial investment, generation and savings over 25 years.

Q Shopping Pointers

Ubud’s markets are prone to rip off people and vendors can be pushy. Prices are much lower at the souvenir shops Krishna and Jogger. The main market Pasar Ubud is pricier than Sukawati Market where not only crafts, home decorations, statuary, carving, bags, clothing and other artwork are sold, but also heaps of Indonesian-style dresses, shirts, scarves, cushions, handbags, as well as household wares go at terrific bargains. It’s no accident that lines of busses full of thrift-
