The Frugal Balinist *Tech Heads-up. “Juice jacking” is a new way to infect your phone or laptop with malware when you are charging at airport or other public USB ports or by using USB cables. Once you plug in, you get hacked. Thieves can then read and export your data, including your passwords, and can even lock up your device. So always use a power outlet rather than a USB charging station in airports or internet cafes. Also carry your own power cords, pack a portable battery bank and an inexpensive “USB condom” that disables the cable’s data pin, allowing charging but blocking any flow of data. *Be careful when using Google Maps on Bali as you may end up down an obscure road in the middle of rice paddies. *Redmi Note 8 is an excellent budget phone with 48MP camera that can be purchased at the official Xiaomi store in Denpasar. *Tokopedia scored highest for total monthly web visits of 140,414,500 in 2019. The second most visited e-commerce site was Shopee (90,705,300), followed by Bukalapak (89,765,800), Lazada (49,620,200) and Blibli (38,453,000). Shopee has become especially popular with K-pop listeners and men who like soccer. *Instead of sending bits of cardboard around the world at holiday time, www.dontsendmeacard.com allows users to send carbon-free Christmas e-cards. *World clocks: https:// time.is; www.timeanddate.com/worldclock/search.html. * Airport Blues. Arriving at 8 pm or later at Ngurah Rai Airport and then renting a motorbike is not an option and car rentals cost up to Rp500,000/day. *Fares at the taxi counter have become extortionate, charging Rp150,000 for destinations even close to the airport and if you’re heading to Sanur, Canggu or Ubud, it’s serious money. If you haggle with taxi drivers, you’ll end up paying Rp250,000Rp300,000 to Ubud. Drivers will try for

Rp450,000 but just stay firm. *Alternatively, exit baggage claim and head for the airport departure level above the ground-level arrivals parking area. If burdened down, take the elevator to your left. Once on the departure level, wait for a Bluebird taxi to drop someone off for their flight. Bluebird uses the meter. A Bluebird taxi will cost approximately half of what they ask at the airport taxi counter. Sometimes you have to wait awhile for a Bluebird, but it’s worth the while. *Yet another option is just to walk to the domestic terminal and get a taxi from there. *Download the GoJek app and get a motorbike ride to your destination for much cheaper, but you’ll have to go through some trouble to get to the place where they can safely pick you up beyond the glare of the airport’s taxi mafia. *GoJek and Grab (for cars) drivers are available if you exit the terminal and walk for 5 min. all the way through the parking garage and out the other side where the motorbike parking is. Just follow the droves of other people. *Don’t ever put anything valuable like jewelry, electronics or currency in your checked bag. It can get stolen or damaged. Too much of a risk and you won’t get any compensation since airlines advise you to keep valuable items with you. * Delectably cheap fruits. Because of the sudden evaporation of the Chinese export market on account of the coronavirus, there’s now an immense oversupply of Dragon Fruit and mangosteens causing the price of these fruits to plummet. However, Bali consumers should expect a steep increase in the cost of garlic. Before the cancellation of flights between China and Indonesia, China flooded the market with cheap, high quality garlic. Newly planted crops of garlic in Bali’s Kintamani region will not be available in markets until April or May.

* Bargains. Use Visa’s and Mastercard’s online calculators, or a currency app on your phone, to estimate what you’ll be charged on your credit card. *With many types of Amex cards, users pay no foreign transaction fee. *Ubud has a plethora of massage parlors that offer massages for Rp75,000 to Rp200,000. *A great number of Kuta massage parlors give 1.5 hour Balinese massages for around Rp100,000. *Scooter hire from a local shop costs around Rp600,000/month; fuel costs only Rp15,000 to fill the tank which lasts about a week if you’re just putting around.*From Ubud south to Kuta or Nusa Dua costs about Rp300,000 one-way in a private taxi. *Entry fees to some cultural and religious sites are nominal, currently only Rp15,000 (Lempuyang, Taman Ayun and Kehen). However, to get into Ubud’s Monkey Forest is now a whopping Rp80,000. *A 20 pack of yoga classes at the Yoga Barn runs just Rp1,400,000. *High tourist prices are the norm in tourist areas, but the further you get off the beaten path, the more inexpensive everything is. *A sarong at a big Kuta supermarket costs around Rp75,000, but you can bargain for much less in a traditional market or on the beach where you can pay as little as Rp100,000 for two. *Cheap sketchbooks, pencils and kid’s craft supplies are available from any supermarket. *Ordering drinks for dinner will often end up even pricier than the whole meal; choose water or soft drinks and avoid alcohol because of steep tax.

Bali’s Themed Restaurants Transport Diners to Another World There is little doubt that Bali has undergone a culinary revolution. From mahi-mahi ceviche to pan seared foie gras, the island abounds in cosmopolitan delights from around the globe. Indonesian and Balinese cuisine is also very much in the spotlight (for obvious reasons), whether it be at a fancy restaurant or a roadside warung. However, sometimes a dining experience is not just about the food. And here is where the island’s extravagant, fun or downright crazy restaurants come in. Check out our list of some of Bali’s more unusual themed restaurants.

Koral Restaurant at the Apurva Kempinski Bali

For such a weird venue, Frankenstein’s Laboratory offers pretty typical fare – something many diners surely appreciate. The restaurant’s offerings include crispy wood fired pizzas, burgers, homestyle pastas, fresh salads and an array of Indonesian favorites. Those terribly brave, or overly confident, can take the Monster Slab Challenge. If you manage to finish the restaurant’s mega burger, complete with four 150-gram beef patties, in under 20 minutes, you will be gifted an, “I conquered the Monster Slab at Frankenstein’s Laboratory Stubby Holder” and immortalized on the restaurant’s website. Complete your meal with one of the venue’s cocktail concoctions served in creepy laboratory glassware, including syringes, beakers and test tubes.

Having only opened last year, the Koral Restaurant is already turning heads – literally. After all, it is hard to focus on your meal with colorful fish and coral all around you. The glass-roofed aquarium restaurant, which is a first for Bali, sets diners right amid the island’s underwater treasures. And Koral’s cuisine matches its marine setting. Some of the fancier highlights on the menu include Gravlax Salmon, smoked salmon covered with Indonesian basil and celery chlorophyll jelly, cauliflower purée, beans and radish; and Blue Crab, lump meat with macédoine of jicama, cucumber, Granny Smith apples, ginger torch, chervil and chili, green apple jelly and sturia French caviar. Those not into seafood can indulge their taste buds by trying the likes of the restaurant’s decadent Beef “Rossini,” Wagyu tenderloin marbling 9+, “Rougié” foie gras, truffle beef sauce, suprême chicken velouté brioche and braised shallots.

Frankenstein’s Laboratory “Creepy cocktail concoctions, monster bites, live music by the Monsters Band and live cabaret performances nightly by the Dancing Dead & The Zombie Crew.” This is just a fraction of what awaits you at the ghoulish Frankenstein’s Laboratory. Set up as a dungeon workshop, the restaurant features spooky glowing green orbs and brass installations. As far as your dining companions, you can expect zombies, vampires, mummies and monsters, or the establishment’s employees in full costume and make-up. Frankenstein’s Laboratory hosts two sessions each night, including a Family Session and an Adults Session for the very brave.

Slippery Stone Bali

Cosmic Diner Venture back in time to the 50s when rockabillies reigned supreme at this cozy restaurant in Sanur. Paying homage to the style associated with this early style of rock and roll music, this retro establishment features striking décor complete with black and white checkered floors, vintage posters, vinyl booth seats and a jukebox. The menu is jam packed with classic American fare, including burgers, fries, pancakes, waffles and sandwiches. Some of the more attention-grabbing dishes include the Coffee-Rub Pulled Pork Sandwich, 18-hour cooked pulled pork, coleslaw and Cosmic’s special BBQ sauce on a toasted brioche bun; and the Chicken Waffles, buttermilk friend chicken with waffles and maple syrup. Don’t leave without trying the Chocolate Trifecta Shake, which comes in a funky boot-shaped glass.

The Slippery Stone brings Grecian splendor right to the heart of Seminyak. Reminiscent of ancient Greece, the restaurant features ivy-clad stone walls and intricately sculpted pillars. The domed ceilings, opulent chandeliers and statues of Greek gods complete the Mediterranean picture. Dine at the restaurant or in one of the open-air gazebos, or grab a pre- or post-dinner drink at the venue’s bar. The restaurant offers live entertainment each weekend, including belly dancers, DJs, drag queens and fire shows. Lovingly created from the freshest of ingredients, Slippery Stone’s Greek fare is both authentic and nourishing. Aside the usual Greek starters including dips, saganaki, olives and marinated peppers, the restaurant offers a wide range of mains. Feast on seafood offerings such as the Slippery Lobster, baby lobster pan friend in olive oil, white wine, oregano and Greek herbs, or go carnivore with the Pastitsio, beef mince mixed with onion, tomatoes and herbs, and layered with pasta and béchamel sauce. If you happen to be vegetarian, Slippery Stone also offers a range of salads.

https://www.facebook.com/cosmicdinerbali/

The Pirates Bay Step into the Arrr world of marine pillage and plunder right on the shores of Nusa Dua. Complete with an abandoned ship, a treehouse and a lookout tower, the Pirates Bay is a treasure trove of surprises for both the young and the young at heart. To become a true pirate, you can sign yourself and your kids up for one of the restaurant’s treasure hunting sessions, where you can dress up, search for loot, and even make a camp fire. Keeping with the theme, the restaurant’s menu is mostly seafood based. Select the Grilled Barracuda with melted mozzarella, salad, potato wedges and garlic butter sauce, or go all out and opt for the Pirates Basket with grilled prawns, crab, mussels, snapper and squid served with French fries and garlic butter sauce.

School News Taman Rama Intercultural School Engaging in More Eco-friendly Initiatives Beaches, green fields, rivers, waterfalls – all associated with nature and beauty; these places give a sense of pride for Bali’s residents. But what’s more: they are icons to Bali’s paradise, tourism and image. “Plastic Island”, however, has begun an aggressive takeover. Threatening the kingdom that patriotic Balinese have built over centuries, we are entering an era of struggle to preserve this island’s natural beauty. Our beloved home is slowly losing value thanks to the great colonization of trash. Thankfully, on the 1st January 2019, a year ago, Mr. I Wayan Koster, Bali’s Governor, officially banned the use of plastic bags. Although a major progress towards a friendlier eco-living, the negative impacts of plastic and trash can only become fully exterminated by a step-by-step progress at the grassroots levels. Believing the collective power of the people, the revolutionary “One Island One Voice” organization decided it’s time for action to stop plastic trash from entering our ocean. We, at Taman Rama Intercultural School – Bali (TRISB), are just as highly determined to become a part of the movement. The 15th February 2020 witnessed the biggestever Bali beach clean-up, enacted at 115 different locations all over Bali. In Lembeng beach, Ketewel, 50 of TRISB’s volunteering members ventured out at 6.30 a.m. on a Saturday sunrise. Wearing rubber gloves, cautionary face masks, and using reusable rice sacks; they had enormous team spirit, solicitude, and enthusiasm. I, for one, felt extremely inspired by many of my fellow peers as we walked the shoreline together collecting trash. change in our school community consumption habits. “Yok, Go Green” translates as “Let’s Go Green”. The club began its first attempt on changing habits by focusing awareness from single-use plastic bottles to reusable bottles in 2018: The aim being to reduce plastic trash. Our solution included providing drinking water gallons in school hallways, and refills charged between one to two thousand rupiah. Wishing to do more for environmental awareness, Eight members set out to present ideas and speak in morning assemblies, arranged gallon pickups for 5 days a week, and sold colourful water bottles to show that an environmentally-friendly living is achievable for everyone! Triumphant in 2019, we embarked on more conquests and continued our journey on the “Zero-waste” initiative.

the heroes of today. I’m incredibly proud by our volunteers who, like me, choose to channel that young passionate solidarity into saving the environment and our island Bali. The issue of waste on beaches is a serious concern and must not be underestimated. I pledge to save our environment because it is my duty to do so.”

Focusing on a larger scale of waste reduction such as paper, food and plastic waste, our new idea was to implement an extra 5000-Rupiah tariff for school canteen customers who did not bring and use their own reusable food containers. Committed, my friend Dhanti and I prepared presentations to help explain our plans and were soon heard and approved by the school community. Across the school participation in the new scheme has been excellent. It’s heartening to know that in some classes 100% of the students are regularly using reusable containers. Some classes, however, still need some convincing that they too collectively matter to the environment. Nevertheless, “responsible and fun”, would be the best way to describe our initiatives so far.

60 minutes of the time spent collecting, identifying and separating the trash, we managed to get 15 bags full of recyclable and nonrecyclable trash. After conducting a mandatory survey, we noticed that 50 disposed sandals, 15 glass bottles dominate the recyclable bag, while about 80 straws and 100+ plastic packaging dominate As part of the younger generation, we were born the non-recyclable, and each of the two samples is found in one into this world with plastic already well-alive, popular bag alone! Bali For Kids

Calling all families that love kittens and cats -- or who just want to help a worthy Bali project. Villa Kitty, near Ubud, has been rescuing, caring for and re-homing Bali cats since 2011. Villa Kitty runs a program called Every Child Deserves a Kitten that educates Balinese kids and their families about animals and their welfare. Each month, Villa Kitty vets travel to the SOS Children’s Village in Tabanan to do monthly checks, de-worm and give vaccines to kittens adopted by the children, who previously could not afford a cat due to poverty.

Local News Enforcing travel restrictions, Indonesian immigration rejects dozens of foreigners from entering Bali amid coronavirus outbreak Indonesian immigration has so far rejected 77 foreigners from entering Indonesia via Bali’s Ngurah Rai International Airport amid the international outbreak of the deadly novel coronavirus (2019-nCoV).

“As of 10pm [on Sunday], the number of foreigners rejected from entering Indonesia via Bali is at 77, but we are unable to provide details on each of their nationalities,” Putu Suhendra, who heads the information department at the Ngurah Rai Immigration Office, told Tribun earlier today. Last Wednesday, Indonesia began suspending flights going to and coming from China, as well as visa-free and visa-on-arrival provisions for Chinese nationals. The restrictions on visa provisions are also applicable to travelers of other nationalities who have traveled to China in the last two weeks. Suhendra said that 49 Chinese citizens have requested for an emergency permit to stay longer in Indonesia, as they are wary of returning to their home country at this time. The Indonesian government has announced that penalties will not be applicable to Chinese tourists and workers who overstayed their visas because of the temporary travel ban. China’s Consulate-General in Bali on Saturday chartered a flight and repatriated 61 of their citizens back to Wuhan, the epicenter of the coronavirus outbreak in that country, though thousands are reportedly still stranded since Indonesia enforced its travel restrictions. As of Monday morning, the 2019-nCoV has killed over 900 people and infected more than 40,000 others. The disease has so far affected at least 25 countries, though there has yet to be a single confirmed case on Indonesian soil. (coconut.com) Chinese tourists to extend their stay in Bali amid international coronavirus outbreak Dozens of Chinese tourists in Bali are reportedly applying to extend their stay permits amid the novel coronavirus outbreak in their country. According to the Ngurah Rai Immigration Office, at least 76 Chinese tourists filed their application yesterday. Some of them are required to pay penalties for overstaying before proceeding to apply for visa extensions, as reported by Kompas.

“We will extend their visa for a month. Every visa-on-arrival can be extended once for a 30-day stay permit,” Sutrisno, an official from the Ministry of Law and Human Rights, said. There are around 3,000 Chinese tourists still in Bali, following a flight restriction enforced by the Indonesian government for travelers going to and coming from China. On Saturday, China’s Consulate-General in Bali chartered a flight and repatriated 61 of their citizens back to Wuhan, the epicenter of the coronavirus outbreak in that country. The novel coronavirus, now officially named COVID-19 by the World Health Organization, has now killed more than 1,100 people and infected over 44,000 as of this morning. The disease has so far affected at least 27 other countries around the world, including Singapore and Malaysia. Indonesia has yet to confirm a COVID-19 case in the country. (Coconuts.com 13/02/2020)

10 Garuda disinfects aircraft following report of confirmed coronavirus case on Bali-Shanghai flight Garuda Indonesia has grounded an aircraft used for flight GA858 following reports that a Chinese national who had tested positive for the new coronavirus was on board on the Bali-Shanghai flight on Jan. 28. Garuda director of operations Tumpal M. The procedure would also be carried out on the plane’s cargo area, he said. Besides disinfecting the plane, Tumpal said Garuda would also change the aircraft’s High Efficiency Particulate Arresting (HEPA) air filter, a standard feature installed on every Garuda aircraft to kill viruses and bacteria within the cabin. SOEs ministry to upgrade Benoa into cruise port The State-Owned Enterprises (SOEs) Ministry plans to develop Benoa Harbor, through state-owned port operator PT Pelindo III, into the archipelago’s hub port for cruise liners to attract more tourists. The government is intent on developing the harbor as a tourism gateway for cruises as well as new destinations in Bali and other maritime destinations in the country, SOEs Minister Erick Thohir said in a written statement on Friday, following a coordination meeting in Bali on the Benoa Maritime Tourism Hub development project. “By holding a coordination meeting and visiting the port, related stakeholders will realize the obstacles Pelindo III will face [in developing the harborside], and what kind of support should be provided for the project,” said Erick. He added that developers would also be building supporting facilities, such as an exhibition hall for micro, small and medium enterprises, a cultural venue, a yacht pier and an urban forest. To support the harborfront development project, Pelindo III plans to move the 70-hectare container and cargo terminal at Benoa Port to another location. He added that Benoa Port in Bali topped the list with 75 arrivals, followed by 17 arrivals at Lembar Port in West Nusa Tenggara, and 16 arrivals at Tanjung Emas Port, Central Java. Pelindo III planned to share new features at its port facilities with cruise ship operators, including improvements at Benoa Port and the Gilimas Terminal at Lembar Port. For example, it had deepened the waterways at Benoa Port from a previous low water spring (LWS) of 11 meters to 13 meters.

“Before, large vessels of more than 250 meters could only dock outside the port, but with the revitalization, they can now dock at the berths. This will certainly add interest in cruise ship [tourism], as safety and comfort is guaranteed,” operations and commercial director Putut Sri Mulianto of Pelindo III said. Improving port facilities was the company’s contribution to achieving the national target of 20 million foreign tourist arrivals in 2020. “This is an example of good governance, in which all stakeholders are involved in a transparent process from the outset. I want every SOEs [ministry] project to be done this way,” said the minister. In addition to developing Benoa Harbor for tourism, Pelindo III is constructing a designated venue for the Melasti ritual, a Hindu-Balinese purification ritual for cleansing and recharging the spiritual energy of sacred temple objects. Indonesia offers big discounts to attract foreign tourists amid cancellations The government will provide discounts of up to 30 percent for both foreign and local travelers in a bid to revive Indonesia’s tourism, as more tourists cancel their vacation plans to the country over fears of the deadly coronavirus outbreak. Unveiled by President Joko “Jokowi” Widodo during a Cabinet meeting on Monday 17/02, the plan will be relayed to travel companies, airlines and other related industries. “I met with the finance minister this morning and we will weigh the possibility of providing a discount or incentive of up to 30 percent of actual prices to foreign tourists,” he said. No details of the incentives have been announced but related ministers said that discounts would be applied to tour package to certain destinations and service fees waived on airlines at local airports, among other measures. Finance Minister Sri Mulyani said the details of proposal would soon be discussed with other related ministries, such the Health Ministry, Tourism and Creative Economy Ministry, Transportation Ministry, as well as State-Owned Enterprises (SOE) Ministry. “Everything is currently being finalized, including how long the [initiative will run]. We are still calculating the different incentives offered during the low season and peak season.” Under the plan, tourists visiting certain destinations will, among other deals, get discounts on flights and hotels. Meanwhile, for business players in tourism-related industries such as travel agents and airlines, the government will offer several incentive that can help them pass through the difficult time. The minister also urged airlines to reroute their China flights to new potential markets or add flights to their busiest routes. The potential markets include Australia and countries in the Middle East and South Asia like India, Pakistan and Bangladesh. Meanwhile, Tourism and Creative Economy Minister Wishnutama Kusubandio said on Monday that discounts may

be given to tourist visiting destinations such as Bali, Likupang in North Sulawesi, Bintan and Batam in Riau Islands, Yogyakarta, Lombok and Labuan Bajo. The ministry plans to offer a tour package that includes flights, accommodation and tickets for attractions with promotional rates in cooperation with online travel agents and tour operators. “We will decide the incentive this week, we will have a follow-up meeting [on Tuesday]. We will coordinate so the incentives can be effective in reviving tourism,” he said. The coronavirus outbreak had been a blow to Indonesia’s travel industry, with massive cancellations of flights and hotels. The Indonesian Hotel and Restaurant Association (PHRI) has recorded at least 20,000 cancellations for Bali since the rise in the new coronavirus in early January. The tourism minister said Indonesia could suffer potential losses of up to US$2.8 billion from Chinese tourists, whose number have reached an average of 2 million travelers. Indonesia saw 16.1 million foreign tourist arrivals in 2019, with Chinese visitors contributing 12 percent of all foreign arrivals. (The JakartaPost.com 21/02/2020)

PARADISE... IN SICKNESS & IN HEALTH CORONA VIRUS…Should we be Concerned? There are so many unknowns about the novel corona virus that has triggered unprecedented quarantine efforts, dangerous conspiracy theories and global alarm. Much of what we know about coronaviruses comes from the ones that we’ve dealt with before - ranging from deadly global health threats such as severe acute respiratory syndrome (SARS) to versions that cause the common cold. New information is coming in on a daily basis, but here’s what we know so far about the respiratory virus that has, as of Feb 16 2020, infected more than 69,000 people and killed more than 1,600 people, all but four on the Chinese mainland.

How do you treat this coronavirus illness?

2. Wash your hands. A lot

There is no specific antiviral treatment recommended for this infection. People who become ill should receive supportive care to help relieve symptoms.

People worry about catching viruses when other people cough or sneeze in their vicinity, and of course that is one way of contracting the flu and most likely the coronavirus as well. But it’s also alarmingly easy to catch the flu or another virus if you touch an object or surface that was touched by someone who was contagious any time over the previous 48 hours, especially if you then touch your nose or mouth.

Is the Corona Virus in Bali? That’s a very good question. No one seems to be able to give an absolute answer to this. What we do know is that one Chinese national holidaying on the Island has been confirmed positive. Given that the virus is highly contagious, he has probably passed it along somewhere.

What are the symptoms and how deadly is the new coronavirus? Common signs of infection include fever, coughing and breathing difficulties. In severe cases, it can cause pneumonia, multiple organ failure and death. The incubation period of COVID-19 is thought to be between one and 14 days. It is contagious before symptoms appear. Infected patients can be asymptomatic, not displaying any symptoms despite having the virus in their systems. The good news is that public health officials say the new coronavirus is less deadly than SARS, which killed about 10 percent of people who were infected during the outbreak that began in 2002. But an urgent question needs to be answered as soon as possible: How much less deadly is it? About 2 percent of the reported cases as of Feb. 7 have been fatal, but many experts say the death rate could be lower. That’s because early in an outbreak, mild illnesses may not be reported. How easily does it spread? The bad news is that the new coronavirus appears to spread much more easily than SARS and instead is similar to other coronaviruses that cause cold-like symptoms. A virus that can spread fairly easily - and may already be fairly widespread - presents a huge public health challenge.

3. Unless you’re a health care worker or you have flu symptoms, don’t wear a mask

When will it end? This coronavirus could follow a seasonal pattern, peaking in the winter months. It could infect lots of people now and then begin to recede in the Northern Hemisphere before returning in the fall. It could take hold in the Southern Hemisphere. What we do know is that the virus is unpredictable. It can mutate and morph in its own favour any time that it wants. In the meantime, here’s what every smart leader, and employee, should do to avoid disruptions from both the coronavirus and the flu. 1. Don’t go to work if you feel sick, and don’t let your employees / students come in either

Who is most at risk of severe illness? So far, the risk factors for developing severe illness are thought to be similar to those for other respiratory illnesses. Older people and those with underlying illnesses, such as diabetes or high blood pressure, are at increased risk. Early studies have also suggested men are at greater risk.

This is where frequent hand-washing comes in. The more often you wash your hands, the less likely you are to infect yourself if you’ve touched something that had virus on it, and to give any virus you may have to someone else.

Our tendency to take a cold pill and tough it out when we don’t feel well is one of the worst habits we have. If you have any symptoms at all, and in particular a fever, you absolutely must stay at home because you risk sharing whatever you have with the community at large. This would be true even if there were no coronavirus.

If you’re healthy, wearing a mask is unlikely to help you in most situations, especially if you don’t wear a new one each time you go out. On the other hand, masks have been shown to protect health care workers who may be exposed to the coronavirus and other illnesses in the course of their work. Because of panic over the new virus, some health officials are concerned about a shortage of masks for those health care workers who need them most - and if they get infected, the disease is likelier to spread. In other words, though it’s counterintuitive, wearing a mask when you don’t need one could actually increase your chances of getting the coronavirus, or another virus. If you’re coughing or sneezing, though, wearing a mask may prevent you from sharing your cold or flu with anyone else. In Asia, many people wear masks because it’s considered polite to do so if you have cold or flu symptoms.

Alternative Voice A Call for a Fair Deal for All Mammals Solidarity with Fido & Felix! It wasn’t always so but somewhere in my mid-thirties I became a felophile, if such a word exists. If that sounds depraved, it actually isn’t. I mean, I am one of those who adores cats. I don’t think I have ever come across a cat I haven’t liked, even the most psychopathically vicious, and there certainly are some. Fortunately my late wife was similarly afflicted. We have always had cats in our household. I grew up with horses and loved them. I have had a dog, whom I loved. But to me cats are special. Their beauty and self possession, the love and affection when they bestow it trumps all other creatures for me. There is a theory cats have some quality with which they can infect their human hosts so they become besotted slaves. If so I am clearly infected.

whether they get to keep their sex organs? If I love animals so much how can that be right? Short answer is it is not right. But am I going to forego the company of cats? No, I am not. Which rather puts me, and anyone like me, in the position of the plantation owner, who claims to love his slaves and treats them well. For make no mistake, and science confirms, our fellow mammals enjoy pretty much the full emotional range that we do. Get used to the idea and think about it.

Feeling as I do I am greatly conflicted by the massive culling of feral cats in Australia, where they are kiling millions of these beautiful creatures because thay are fearsomely eqipped evolutionary killing machines and are driving many species, particularly the native ones, to extinction. This is a very bad habit, which even my own cats suffer from, and I do wish they wouldn’t do it. Sad as it makes me I can’t say the Australian government is wrong to cull, but I hate to think of it.

In fact I’d like to see an international law that required any individual whose wealth and assets exceed US$10 billion denied access or any ownership of the beautiful and unspoiled parts of the world that remain. Deny the bastards admiration and confine them to the heavily populated parts of the world along with the rest of us would do it nicely I think. After all we not talking of a lot of people here. To go back to where I began, which is with cats, is not pet ownership ethically problematic since it denies animals the right of self-determination? Are we not ultimately bringing them into our homes because we want them in our lives and feel that gives us the right to dictate what they eat, where they live, how they behave, how they look, even

Widespread petkeeping is a relatively recent phenomenon. Until the 19th century, most owned animals were working animals and regarded unsentimentally. In 1698, for example, a Dorset farmer recorded in his diary: “My old dog Quon was killed and baked for his grease, which yielded 11lb.” In the 19th and 20th centuries pets became more desirable but animal life was not attributed any intrinsic value. In the 1960s putting a dog to sleep before going on holiday, reasoning that it was cheaper to get a new dog upon return was not uncommon. More recently, however, several countries have moved to change the legal status of animals. In 2015, the government of New Zealand recognised animals as sentient beings, in effect declaring them no longer property (how this squares with New Zealand’s recent “war on possums” is unclear), as did the Canadian province of Quebec. While pets remain property in the UK, the Animal Welfare Act of 2006 stipulates that pet owners must provide a basic level of care for their animals. Pets are also property in the US, but 32 states, now include provisions for pets under domestic violence protection orders.

But why do we have to kill these animals when it is our fault they are there in the first place. No, the fault lies with us and our appetites. It is we humans who have spread across the planet like a virus. We need to control ourselves a lot better and the sad thing is the means of ordering our world for the benefit of all sentient beings already lies within our hands. First off there needs to be a lot fewer of us. I’m not suggesting we cull ourselves, though Nature may well do that for us if we carry on the way we are. No, contraception will do just fine, and I’m not suggesting governments interfere by telling us how many children we’re allowed to have. Economics will do that if we share the wealth of the planet more fairly. The Pope should now get up off his throne and apologise deeply for their 1,000 year error. Abortion is irrelevant to this issue. Next the filthy rich need to pay their taxes and stop plundering the commons. They can still be rich but until they change their ways and perspective they deserve no respect or honours.

circus, are shutting down and there are calls to end, or at least rethink, zoos. Meanwhile, the number of vegans worldwide is on the rise, in Britain skyrocketing 350% between 2006 and 2016. Eating uncloned meat may become minority exercise.

Before congratulating ourselves on how far we’ve come, consider that 1.5m shelter animals – including 670,000 dogs and 860,000 cats – are euthanised each year in the US. In the UK he figure is far less but cases of animal cruelty increased 5% in 2016 to 400 calls a day. Crucially, our animals can’t tell us whether they are happy being pets. There is an illusion now that pets have more voice than in the past … but it’s not true, we are the ones putting words in their mouths. Just key in cute animals on Facebook. Humanising them in this way actually makes them invisible. Treating animals as commodities isn’t new or even shocking; humans have been meat-eaters and animal-skin-wearers for millennia. However, this is at odds with how we say we feel about our pets. The British pet industry is worth about £10.6bn; Americans spent more than $66bn (£50bn) on their pets in 2016. A survey earlier this year found that many British pet owners love their pet more than they love their partner (12%), their children (9%) or their best friend (24%). According to another study, 90% of pet-owning Britons think of their pet as a member of their family, with 16% listing their animals in the 2011 census (nice touch that last one). The dilemma and logical consequence of this is that the more we concede emotional parity with the animals with whom we share our homes, the less right we have to control every single aspect of their lives. Does this mean that, in 50 years or 100 years, we won’t have pets? Institutions that exploit animals, such as the

C/He/G-26 Feb. 20

Of course petkeeping might fall out of fashion; it’s possible robots will take their place, or maybe pet “owning” will be for small numbers of people. Cultural trends come and go. The more we think of pets as people, the less ethical it is to keep them. Things seem to be going the right way for our animal cousins, but slowly. All of us will do a lot better if we can get our act together. It is up to us and we must not allow the plutocrat or the hidebound to stand in our way. We stand or fall with Fido & Felix –Solidarity!

BOOMER CORNER Reflections on two decades of tourism development The history of Planet Earth is the history of mankind’s migrations and as a reader of this article you are most likely a recent migrant yourself. I am sure that everyone who eventually turned into a migrant and is now living here, came once before as a tourist. What remains rather odd is that people who try to make a permanent move from a poor country to a wealthy nation are called refugees. There was a time when someone who left one country to settle in another was called an emigree. Nowadays, in case such a person is allowed to enter a country, he is called an immigrant. As we all know attitudes towards immigrants do differ. In civilized countries with leaders like Trudeau or Merkel, immigrants are not by definition evil people but welcomed. In the country that has telephone code number one and a leader who is married to a recent immigrant, all newcomers from countries where people are killing each other are by definition criminals and therefore unwelcome.

a lot of handwringing about the fact that that there was a decrease in foreign arrivals to Indonesia and the number of tourists was so much lower than in Thailand and Malaysia.

Komodo Airport in Labuan Bajo, East Nusa Tenggara, the main entryway to a fast-growing hotspot, will become an international airport in June.

This brings me to a few of particular aspects of Indonesian governance. Once a problem has been identified, the answer is usually to organize a conference with delegates from several different Government Ministries participating. Long introductions and many repetitions will be recorded as ‘brainstorming’ and after many lunches and dinners later the final outcome will be a “Joint Action Plan”.

Whether these new flight destinations have the capacity to handle a major influx of tourists, is anybody’s guess.

After these meetings everyone goes home with feelings of satisfaction, because something has been achieved. At the same time there are feelings of relief, because the time has come to forget about the problem for a while. The name and the scope of the responsibilities of the Ministry of Tourism have changed several times. At one point it was Tourism, Post and Telecommunications. Then for quite a while it became the department of Tourism Art and Culture. Currently it is the Ministry of Tourism and Creative Economy. What never changes is the fact that when it comes to foreign arrivals the Department sets targets. If at the end of the year the actual arrivals turn out to be higher, we slap each other on the back because the targets were achieved. If at the end of the year the reverse is the case, and the predictions of the Department turned out to be wrong,we commiserate because it means we did not meet the target. Yet that still is no reason to worry. We will organize new brainstorming sessions and see if we should perhaps change the slogan or the tagline.

Yet when someone from a wealthy country makes a move to a lesser developed nation, we now refer to him as an expat. The implication is that the move is not permanent. Someone living -ex patria-outside of his native country may one day return to his ‘homeland’. You may have met expats on this island who continuously go back and forth on tourist visa and this routine does indeed offer them the opportunity to regularly go shopping for books unavailable locally. In case you are an expat boomer who moved to Bali relatively recently you may be unaware there used to be a time that visa on arrival meant that one could stay sixty days in Indonesia. Those were the days that the North of Bali was thriving with a constant stream of backpackers. Many of these foreign visitors had already been to Pangandaran on the South coast of Java and to Yogyakarta and were probably planning to continue to go to Lombok and Flores. Most objected if you would call them tourists. They preferred to use the term ‘travelers’ and most carried Bill Dalton’s “the Indonesian Handbook”. When you could spend sixty days in the country it was perfectly possible to go on a five or six island ‘tour’ through the country. All that was brought to an end in February 2004 by Yusril Mahendra, at the time Minister of Justice and Human Rights. He was the one who engineered that the sixty days were reduced to thirty. In the years that followed there was

Incidentally, another Indonesian idiosyncrasy is that official results never come in a rounded figure. It is not good governance to tell the world that we reached 78 percent of the target. It is more correct to report that the figure was 77.68 percent. As far as I know the most recent action plan for the development of tourism is now four years old so it is not polite to start asking about its implementation. It was hatched in February 2016 under the name TEN NEW BALIS. The plan foresaw the creation of ten new tourist destinations across the country. The ten destinations earmarked were Lake Toba (North Sumatra), Belitung (Bangka Belitung), Tanjung Lesung (Banten), Seribu Islands (Jakarta), Borobudur Temple (Central Java), Mount Bromo (East Java), Mandalika Lombok (West Nusa Tenggara), Komodo Island (East Nusa Tenggara), Wakatobi National Park (Southeast Sulawesi), and Morotai (North Maluku). When I worked as a tour leader in the late eighties taking groups of Dutch tourists through Indonesia, we already had Lake Toba, Borobudur and Mount Bromo included on the itinerary and usually these guided tours ended with stays on Bali and Lombok. It used to take about four hours to drive from Medan airport to Toba. Since 2017 there is an international airport on Samosir, the island in the lake, and five times a week Air Asia operates a direct flight from Kuala Lumpur. Similarly,

When Indonesia shows progress, it is more often a fruit that was grown in the garden of its vibrant private sector than something that was planted in a Government Park.A case in point is Go-Jek, the local start-up company that dared to challenge rivals like Uber and in the course of the past year has made a greater contribution to changes in the life of ordinary Indonesians than their Government. In early December the company made the front page of the International New York Times as follows : “The company’s main app lets you summon a car or motorbike driver who could just give you a lift, sure — but who could also bring you takeout, shop for groceries or deliver a present to someone across town. With another Go-Jek app, Go-Life, you can hail someone to come cut your hair, give you a massage, clean your bathroom or change your car’s oil. And with the money you keep in Go-Jek’s digital wallet, you can pay your electricity bill, buy mobile data and book movie tickets — all within the app.” Go-Jek’s founder and chief executive, Nadiem Makarim, who turned his start-up into a company valued at three billion dollars was recently commandeered into the Government and appointed as Minister of Education and Culture of the Republic. As a climate refugee to this wonderful country I harbor absolutely no desire to ever return to my homeland. With my retirement visa I feel like a local.

R O TA R Y NEWS On February the 15th the fourth ‘Bali’s Biggest Cleanup’ took place. The Bali’s Biggest Cleanup is an iniative by the Bye Bye Plastic Bags organization. Bye Bye plastic Bags is a NGO driven by youth to say NO to plastic bags. The founders of the organazation are Melati and Isabel Wijsen, two young girls committed to make Bali Plastic Bag FREE.

These two unstoppable girls have organized one Cleanup after another already and even went on a hunger strike to convince the government to put a ban on plastic bags. Their mission is to empower people to do what is right through education, campaigns, and political meetings. They call for making a difference one bag at a time. Over the past three years the movement has gathered 45,000 people in 325 locations and prevented 135 tons of plastic from entering our oceans. It was the fourth time the organization invited everyone on the island to have a hand in collecting waste from Bali’s beaches, rivers, streets and villages with this island wide cleanup. The outcome of the cleanup was (a sad) 41,733 items of plastic. The highest percentage of coordinators and volunteers were Indonesian…...by far! The youngest coordinator was 12 years old and the oldest 64! More rivers were cleaned up than last year too. The number one single use plastic item was plastic food wraps! The Window to the World school Green Rangers, Lovina are happy to work in cooperation with this inspirational organazation. Marla Kroll, volunteer to the Green Rangers

The Fourth ‘Bali’s Biggest Cleanup’ 2020, Lovina, North Bali Chapter. program in name of Rotary Club Euskirchen in Germany, took on the function of coordinator for the Cleanup in Lovina together with Decky Aldrin, founder of the Window to the World school. Marla thought the Clean up on the 15th of February was a success. “We gathered at the dolphin statue in the centre of Kalibukbuk. Our focus was to clean up the beaches overthere. The weather was good and many people joined in; students from different schools, parents as well as local businesses. I would like to mention; Nachoz restaurant, Green Hill guest house and Agung massage. It was really nice to work together on this day. However, we should not think that cleaning up our beaches this way is the answer to the garbage problem. We should regard it as an awareness initiative”, Marla said, a couple of days after the big event. “Still, all the plastic we collected will not end up in the ocean which is always a win situation’’. Like the Bye Bye plastic organization states; one bag at the time….. The Window to the World school in Lovina launched their environment program called Green Rangers in 2018. The program is supported by the local Rotary Club, Rotary Club of Bali Lovina and also is sponsored by Rotary Club Rhenen - Veenendaal, The Netherlands. The program equips students with useable tools to create a change. Students from schools in the vicinity are joining into this program too. Everybody with the right attitude can become a Green Ranger and the program is free. The objective of this project is to; 1. Create awareness among students, teachers and parents 2. Train Green Rangers in setting up and maintaining sustainable garbage management systems using the Window to the World garbage and composting system as an example. 3. Understand the Reduce- Reuse-Recycle principle and

making it a daily routine. 4. Develop understanding that managing garbage is firstly a personal commitment and secondly, a commitment for life.

The program is packed with activities, hands on learning, field trips and discussion time. The Green Rangers are always looking for partners and like minded people. All enthusiastic people with a green mind are welcome to contact the Window to the World school to discuss possibilities to work together. Other partners besides the Bye Bye plastic Bags organization are; Social Impact, True Scuba, NMS Bali, RefillMyBottle, Adirama Hotel, POKMASWAS and local Garbage Banks. You can follow the Window to the World school Green Rangers via the Green Rangers Facebook Page: https://www.facebook. com/Green Rangers. Melly St. Ange: Devoted to the Underprivileged of Bali One of Bali’s most devoted and enthusiastic charity founders, Melly St Ange, passed away unexpectedly on Thursday, February 7, 12:30 pm, at Rumah Sakit Umum (public hospital) Surya Husadha in Nusa Dua. The official cause of death was high blood tension, and her son Christopher was with her. She was one of Bali’s most active fundraisers, and was beloved to many on the island, from AIDS victims and their families, to the many sponsors and donors who supported her causes. Her fundraising luncheons and dinners attracted such people as the wife of Bali’s governor, Made Mangku Pastika, and yet no child or underprivileged woman was too lowly to receive her sincere care and love.

island’s most highly rated venues. As hostess at each fundraising luncheon, all members were made to feel uniquely welcome, and she won many hearts in the international women’s community. In 2009, succeeding Mayke and other hardworking volunteers as BIWA President, Melly joined breast cancer survivors to empower the women of Bali in breast cancer prevention and early detection. Bali Pink Ribbon, one of the island’s most high-profile charities, was born.

OBITUARY

After her BIWA Presidency, she and friend Nani Clark founded Flash Charity biannual luncheons, auctions, and events. She and her small team of volunteers brought foodstuffs and clothing to families severely stigmatized for having a child with AIDS, and brought doctors to villages without clinics. There are countless touching stories of grateful women and children who had no hope before meeting Melly and her team.

Each year, one Flash event by Melly directly benefited Bali Pink Ribbon, and these were extremely popular, often held in large hotel ballrooms such as the Trans Resort Bali, where General Manager Alexander Jovanovic once characterized her as one of the most sincere and hardworking fundraisers he ever knew.

Melly was born in Balikpapan, Kalimantan on 12 November, 1959. The daughter of Mr Alimin, an Immigration officer and spice trader, she was the middle of 11 children. She was educated in Surabaya at the Widya Mandala University when she met hotelier Harry St Ange who was at the Hyatt Bumi Surabaya. The couple were married in Hong Kong in May 1986.

Friends have written and spoken affectionately of Melly’s easy laughter heard over a crowded room, and of her quick wit. Colleagues praised her non-judgemental but direct, refreshingly honest way of speaking and dealing with others. She will long be remembered for her extraordinary generosity, strong faith in Christ, and her leading by superb example a Christian ethos.

They came to Bali to begin a family and launch Melly’s 30 years’ career in hospitality and tourism. Her positions include Sales and Marketing Manager of the Perdana Dadi hotel (now the Lavender Luxury Hotel & Spa), as well as positions at the Grand Hyatt Bali, Patra Jasa Bali, and Bali Nusa Dua. Harry worked as Assistant Food and Beverage Manager at the Hard Rock Hotel Bali.

Melly’s Catholic funeral, February 10 at Mumbul Crematorium, was officiated by Father Venus. Hundreds of mourners from all over the island, from the Badung government to Bali Pink Ribbon and BIWA members, came to pay their respects. There were many songs and hymns, and, per Melly’s wishes, mourners wore white, her favorite color.

Early in her career, Melly began a lasting friendship with Mayke Boestami, a young woman newly arrived from Jakarta and working at the Putri Bali. Melly’s encouragement for Mayke to join and lead a networking group for women in tourism was irresistible. In 1992, Mayke joined charitable and social group Bali International Women’s Association (BIWA) and in turn invited Melly. Melly succeeded Mayke on the board position of Luncheon Coordinator, one of BIWA’s key fundraising activities benefiting underprivileged women and children of Bali. All the while, Melly was still planning events and organizing weddings, which uniquely suited her for creating monthly luncheons of unsurpassed style and value at some of the

She would also approve BIWA sponsorship of the mobile dental unit and many other outreaches into Bali’s remotest villages. Her warmth and love won over many sponsors, who, like Publicis Group, would pay for snacks for children who visited the dental unit, or Café Me, who paid for toothbrushes. Melly, a devout Catholic who never missed Sunday Mass, had resources beyond expectations. When the new warden of Kerobokan Prison was a Christian man, Melly gained unprecedented access, pooling her volunteers to bring to women inmates the most basic cleaning supplies and simple sleeping mats they had gone without. “They are all God’s children,” Melly would tell detractors.

Melly is survived by husband Harry St Ange of London, computer systems specialist, son Christopher, Events Manager at Renaissance Bali Uluwatu, son Larry, Chef at Ethos Restaurant, Leeds, England, ten siblings, ten nieces, fifteen nephews. Update Som Chai in Kerobokan was our feature in depth review in the previous issue of The Bali Advertiser. However that restaurant has now been permanently closed as it is being moved to Ubud [Jln. Monkey Forest]. It will be the first time that Ubud has ever had a Thai restaurant of this quality, in the past just a few warung style operations and more than 15 years since any Thai restaurant existed in Central Ubud on Monkey Forest Road. With the esceptional quality of Will Meyrick’s food from the villages and hill-tribes of northern Thailand, Som Chai is assured of success in Ubud, particularly if they can moderate the pricing structure as central Ubud is very budget conscious.

of seafood] and the unusual, the first time I have ever seen Horse Sashimi on a menu [imported from Japan, obviously a slow racehorse].

Wild Habit is a pizza house on Jln. Kunti, Seminyak. Their pizzas are in the original Naples style, thin crust with puffy edges. All the normal combos are available plus a few special ones; Mushroom and Goats Cheese, Bacon and Baby Leek and Italian Sausage Crumble with Spring Onion. The pasta can be spaghetti, linguine, pappadelle or angel hair.

Warung Little India is amongst the smallest Indian

Bali Owen is a large spacious new restaurant on Sunset Road. Not only is it offering Indonesian cuisine but is obviously under Indonesian management as well. Its menu is not up to the standard needed for Bali, with just a list of dishes with no explanations added. That may be OK for Jakarta, but is useless here, if they want more than just a handful of customers. Local delicacies such as the Barramundi Fishhead Soup and Salted Egg Squid.

Machinery Café is packing them in on Jln. Batu Bolong,

KaBar is a German restaurant and beer house. I have always

Yamato is a Japanese restaurant in Sanur. There was

already a Yamato in Ubud but this one is on Jln. By Pass Nguragh Rai, is almost directly opposite the Sanur Paradise Plaza Suites, and it has has no connection. Evidently Yamato in Japanese means Cheap, and this Yamato is certainly very reasonably priced. There are two areas, inside a traditional Japanese setting, in black, with your choice of seating at the bar, at normal tables or at ground level. The outside shrub covered garden terrace is perfect for evening dining. The menu is large and covers many styles. At lunch there is always a selection of Set Menus [Tempura, Sashimi, Teriyaki, Katsu, noodle, Fish or Beef Curry]. For dinner traditional entrees include Chicken Katsando and Seaweed Salad, non-traditional ones include Escargot in Butter and imported Sausage. Mains include Grilled [Scallops in Butter], Steamed [Chicken Katsu-Ju], Fried [Oysters] and Tempura [Prawns]. A Genghis Khan BBQ [lamb in spices] and Shabu-Shabu feature prominently on the menu. A very large range of Sashimi is always available including the usual [wide variety

dish indeed as is the Platter of Smoked Fish [marlin, tuna and rollmop] with horseradish cream. Interesting side dishes can be Kartoffelsalat, the original German potato salad, Caramelized Beetroot Chips with coriander or a Cucumber Salad with dill. KaBar is a place to relax and enjoy your food and drink, simple and great value.

been quite surprised that there are so few German restaurants in Bali, as many German nationals visit or live here. KaBar is one of a string of small restaurants in front of The Bali Garden Hotel [parking is permissible in the hotel grounds]. A slice of meat loaf [leberkase] topped with a fried egg and onion sauce makes a great breakfast, brunch or lunch. Think German cuisine and you thing ‘sausage’. There are a variety of German and Swiss sausages available here, either to snack on, piece by piece, or to enjoy as a full meal; Cured & Smoked with pickled gherkins, Grilled Curry sausage, Thuringer Pork Bratwurst or Sausage & Sauerkraut Fritters with honey-mustard dip.. Other snacks to nibble on whilst sipping your beer of choice include Pretzels with cream cheese & pepper dip, Fried Brie Cheese with cranberry sauce or Brats in a Bun, with mustard. Heartier offerings can be a Goulash Soup or Fricadels [German meatballs], that are served with mustard. Easily the most popular dish from central Europe is the Schnitzel, claimed by Germany, Austria and Switzerland as their own although the original Wiener Schnitzel is pure Vienna. At KaBar your schnitzel can be of chicken or pork [pictured]. Good taste and great value! Another great central European dish is their Lentil Stew, with slices of smoked sausage and potato making a very hearty

restaurants in Ubud but it is amongst the best. Tucked away at the bottom of Jl. Tebesaya, almost hidden by greenery, it offers simple Indian with a smile. Great crunchy Samosas and reasonable Thali keep the customers coming back. One of Ubud’s survivors. The Dahl Soup is a long time favourite of mine. Canggu. It is a typical local café with a strong American influence, doing all day breakfasts and brunch. Pancakes are not my scene but according to American friends these are amongst the best in Bali.

Zibiru is a small garden restaurant on Jln. Drupadi. It serves Italian cuisine with pride by chef Luigi Calcagno. Antipasti can be simple just some cured meats with salted ricotta and a pot of honey or more exotrtic such as braised and compressed octopus with mustard orange and fennel puree, There is a wide range of pasta from all the regions of Italy. Tagliolini al Ragu di Quaglia from Toscana [white quail ragu with porcini mushrooms and bacon], Strozzapreti al Ragu di Coda from Lazio [Short pasta with slow-cooked oxtail, and tomato confit], Fregola ai Frutti di Mare e Asparagi from Sardegna [small, round pebble-shaped semolina pasta served with squid, prawns, clams, asparagus]. Mains can be seafood; Tonno in Crosta di Pistacchi [crumbled pistachio crusted tuna fillet served with colatura di alici (essence of anchovies) mayonnaise, grilled asparagus, and frisée salad], or Salmon or Barramundi. Meat mains include Odo Bucco [slow-cooked beef shank and its marrow with saffron risotto], Anatra Confit [duck confit with vegetables, fig and red wine sauce] and . Coniglio in Salmì [rabbit legs slow-cooked with brunoise vegetables, served with gorgonzola-sage creamy polenta]. For dessert what is better than a Sicilian Cannoli. By Gerry Williams

Restaurant & Food

QUICK REVIEW

Restaurant Review From the Ukraine

Restaurant

: Usha Café & Bakery.

Address

: Jl. Raya Lod Tunduh,

Lod Tunduh, Ubud.

Usha Café self-describes its food as ‘homemade’. Now this is one of the most abused words in the Bali F&B scene [along with ‘organic’], as no one ever tells you in whose home it was made.

chicken and pork] look very similar to Italy’s Tortelloni, whilst the very traditional Cabbage Dumplings [shredded] are larger half moon ones. There are also Potato Dumplings and a dessert one stuffed with berries.

Telephone/WA

: 085337079038.

Open

: 9.00 a.m. to 9.30 p.m., daily.

Smoking Area

: Garden area.

However after eating at Usha many times I am certain that it is just like visiting a home in the Ukraine for a family meal. Nothing pretentious, no fancy presentation, just bowls of basic, good wholesome food, and at very budget prices.

The Cheburek is a thin crisp shell stuffed with meat or vegetables and Cheese that I found to be rather underwhelming, but the surprise was one of the simplest things on the menu, the Cottage Cheese Pancakes. Looking more like scones than pancakes these little delightful balls are topped with a strawberry slice [pictured] and served with a bowl of sweet jam full of berries for ladling on top.

Parking

: Limited. off street.

Price

: Rp. 200,000 for two [+ drinks].

Credit Cards

: Visa. Mastercard [+3%].

Food

: Ukranian.

Wine

: Sababay.

Service

: With a smile.

The assorted Smoothie Bowls are perfect for either a snack or light meal. Dragon consists of pureed dragon fruit and banana with granola, almond flakes and shredded coconut. Choco Boom has raw cacao, chia seeds and dark chocolate in coconut cream with shredded coconut and cocao nibs, whilst the Mango Paradise consist of pureed mango in coconut cream with granola, shredded coconut, cranberries and almonds.

Atmosphere

: Buzzy.

Overall

: Definitely homemade.

With very limited use of spices the food may be considered bland in Bali where we have so many cuisines that taunt and test the taste buds. However with much use of vegetables as a base, it is definitely a very healthy cuisine. Think of Russian food and you think of Borscht, that beetroot soup, obviously so welcome on freezing cold mornings in that vast country. Well Borscht originated in the Ukraine, and has since been adopted by many neighbouring countries as their own. At Usha their Borsht [as they spell it] has the usual base of pureed beetroot with diced potato, paprika, tomato, shredded cabbage, carrots, beef etc. added. On the side are oven-fresh warm bread rolls [great for dipping] and a small bowl of fresh dill [perhaps Eastern Europe’s favourite herb] for sprinkling on top. It is simple and wholesome, a soup that can almost be called a meal. Dumplings, in their many different forms, also play a big part in this Ukranian cuisine. The Meat Dumplings [minced

Non-smoking Area : Inside.

The creamy Salmon Soup is pureed salmon with cream, potatoes, onion and garlic. The other soup is Chicken and noodles, a very full bowl of shredded chicken and homemade noodles. Shuba or ‘for coat salad’ is a Russian delicacy. It features layers of pickled herrings and root vegetables, something very different. Open from 9.00 for breakfast there are a couple of international options on the menu. Omelettes [listed as Omlet] are the flat open variety with toppings. Eggs Benedict are offered with bacon rather than the traditional ham [or salmon if you prefer] and grilled tomato. The only main dish on the menu is a Chicken Cutlet which is served with salted cabbage and baby potatoes. As Usha is also a bakery there is an attractive range of exotic cakes on display, if your waistline allows such indulgence. Simple honest food, take a trip to the Ukraine.
