Nikki Briones at Cong.
Congressman N. BRIONES Agriculture, Livelihood, Tourism, Housing at Youth.

The dignity and vocation of homosexual persons Part 1 of 2-Part Series A Pastoral Response to the Acceptance of Homosexual Lifestyle and the Legalization of Homosexual Unions
THE creation narratives at the beginning of Sacred Scripture reveal that God made human beings in His image and likeness. He created them male and female, equal in dignity but not identical nor interchangeable. He made one explicitly for the other – “It is not good that the man should be alone” (RSV, Gen. 2:18) – equal as persons, not alike but complementary. So that in relating to each other, as male and female, one would complete the other as two halves coming together to be whole. This complementarity between man and woman, as St. Pope John Paul II has pointed out, is observed and affirmed at the biological, emotional, psychological, and spiritual levels. But it is most manifest primarily in and through the union of two complementary bodies, male and female. “The body, which through its own masculinity or femininity right from the beginning helps both (man and woman) to find themselves in communion of persons, becomes, in a particular way, the constituent element of their union, when they become husband and wife.” Simply put, human beings, created by God as either male or female, are meant to complement each other in a union of the two intended from their creation. And human sexuality, characterized as distinctly masculine or feminine, is ordered by nature towards that union, of one specifically with the other. Having created man and woman, Scripture continues, God instituted marriage as the form of life in which the complementarity of man and woman would be fulfilled and perfected. “Therefore a man leaves his father and his mother and cleaves to his wife, and they become one flesh” (Gen. 2:24). And as it is ordered or directed to the union of man and woman, human sexuality is also ordered towards the procreation and education of children. It is in and through the conjugal union that God has willed to give man and woman a share in His work of creation: “Be fruitful and multiply” (Gen. 1:28). In the Creator’s plan we see, therefore, that sexual complementarity and fruitfulness belong to the very nature of marriage. In other words, marriage by its very nature and intention is unitive and procreative. Marriage is also the form of life best suited for the flourishing of children. As St. Thomas Aquinas explained, human children need, not only nourishment for their bodies, but also education for their souls. This they acquire best, according to St. Thomas, when they have both parents – father and mother, male and female – as their teachers and role models. The Catechism of the Catholic Church explains: “The intimate community of life and love which constitutes the married state has been established by the Creator and endowed by him with its own proper laws. . . . God himself is the author of marriage.” In sum, the Catholic Church teaches that marriage is the institution established by God for the foundation of the family: “The matrimonial covenant, by which a man and a woman establish between themselves a partnership of the whole of life, is by its nature ordered toward the good of the spouses and the procreation and education of offspring; this covenant between baptized persons has been raised by Christ the Lord to the dignity of a sacrament.” In other words, God created human beings as male and female, complementary and specifically for each other, and ordered or directed towards union and procreation that are intended to be fulfilled and perfected in marriage. The Nature of Homosexuality in the Created Order Created either male or female, and by their masculine or feminine sexuality thus directed towards union with the other who complements them, men and women are naturally drawn and relate to each other in this order. There are some men and women, however, often through no fault of their own, who find themselves sexually attracted to individuals of the same sex.

The Nature of Marriage in the Divine Plan
........................................................................................................................................................
When we’ll we ever learn? THE bid of Ferdinand “Bongbong” Marcos, Jr. (BBM) for the Vice-Presidency is troubling. To many people whose memories of Martial Law are not blurred by the repeated leadership failures that came after the late dictator Ferdinand E. Marcos Sr., BBM’s public announcement came as a shock and an insult to intelligence and sensitivity. The son of the scorned dictator proclaimed boldly the right to restore glory to the Marcos name. About a hundred or two joined the rally for BBM’s formal declaration. Present in the rally are familiar faces that inhabited the citadel of power during the Marcos dictatorship: Joseph “Erap” Estrada, Juan Ponce Enrile, Imelda R. Marcos, and BBM’s siblings and family, among others. The scene sent chilling sensation to those who knew and failed to forget the past. Happy days for the self-proclaimed Filipino royals are here again, and they are rewriting history to their liking. BBM claimed that Filipinos have already forgotten what happened in the past. He second guessed the Filipinos he know would rather deal with the present problems of faulty education system, infrastructure, and poverty. His apologists have earlier hinted that BBM is different from his father. Disregarding BBM’s own claim that his father did no wrong, they appealed to the public on his behalf alluding to a familiar sentiment that the fault of the father is not the fault of the son. It is insulting to say the least: the son of the former dictator has come forward to launch a revolution that will restore his family to power, not with the force of arms of course, but by the people’s failure to learn from their own history. Have we not learned anything from

our history? Have memes and computer graphics replaced what history books have written as the darkest period of our history? An online news network recalled that after several years, Filipino taxpayers continue to shoulder the huge foreign debts that BBM’s late father contracted during his long reign. Quoting a think tank, it reported that the outstanding balance of Marcos’s foreign debts stood at around $926.72 million or more than P48 billion (at $1:P52) as of 2005, and that taxpayers will pay for the foreign debts of Marcos until 2025 (see http://www.gmanetwork.com). The self-proclaimed royal Marcos family has ruled the Philippines for fifteen years (1971-1986). For fifteen years, this royal family feasted in extravagance and lavishness while most people suffered from hunger, illness and extreme poverty. For fifteen years, this royal family believed that the Philippines belonged to them forever and ever. For fifteen years, the Filipino people lived in fear of arbitrary arrests, tortures, and summary killings. For fifteen years, people wept. For fifteen years, people waited their chance to erase the mark of this selfproclaimed royal family. Several years after, the self-proclaimed royal Marcos family has come back again to say that all that transpired in those fifteen dark years was just politics. Just politics! BBM claimed that the uprising that rooted them out from the seat of power was just politics. Just that! Now, he is deluding us to let him sit near the seat of power so that he can prove that history was wrong, that the Filipino people were wrong.

Deconstructing the phenomenal AlDub fever ON September 26, the episode that featured the first date of Alden Richards and Yaya Dub in the All for Juan and Juan for All segment of popular noontime show Eat Bulaga, the hashtag #AlDubEBforLOVE reportedly drew in a record-breaking 25,652,800 tweets. AlDub has garnered a broad segment of followers from people as young as nine or 10, to senior citizens, and from the masses to the middle class. AlDub has followers all over the globe. What is the recipe for success of AlDub? Why has it generated so much interest and following? Watching the episode of the kalyeserye (street series), one could see all the elements of its success in play. The very concept of kalyeserye is genius. A lot of Filipinos are hooked to television drama series or soap operas locally called telenovelas (literally translated as television novels). This is why Filipino, Korean, and Mexican soap operas populate local television programs. The Mexican telenovela Marimar hit it big locally when it aired in 1994, such that lead Mexican actress Thalia even visited the country to perform in a concert. Marimar has been reprised recently with local actress and beauty queen Megan Young in the lead. In remote areas in the country where television has limited reach, radio dramas are very popular. And Filipinos living abroad are also avid followers of telenovelas. With Eat Bulaga’s kalyeserye, events unfold on the streets in populated barangays where the team of comedians Wally Bayola, Paolo Ballesteros, and Jose Manalo as Lola Nidora, Tidora, and Tinidora respectively, and of course, the star of the show Maine Mendoza as Yaya Dub perform, and in the studio where Alden Richards as Bae Alden, the other half in the accidental love team, is located. Because the events unfold in the two locations, the audiences in both the remote and studio locations could react and even influence the turn of events in real time. The kalyeserye is a parody of soap opera, which again provides Filipino audiences with one of its favorite pastimes comedy. While the three lolas have complete character histories, what endears them to the audience is their comedic flair. They make fun of themselves and blurt out funny comments while in character. Their
humor is self-deprecating and is a welcome relief from the slapstick, green jokeridden comedy of a lot of Filipino comedians, including the mainstays of Eat Bulaga Tito, Vic and Joey. While the latter three, in their commentaries while the kalyeserye is ongoing, inject some green jokes, it is almost always drowned out by the funny antics and comments of Wally, Paolo and Jose. Maine Mendoza as Yaya Dub is hilarious. She is able to bring her comedic flair in her Dubsmash hits to the kalyeserye in television. Her Dubsmash hits about Kris Aquino could make one double up with laughter. Her exaggerated facial expressions are really funny. And Dubsmash is a hit with Filipinos who love music. Even before Dubsmash, Filipinos have lip-sync contests. Maine Mendoza carries the accidental love team with Alden Richards, who, obviously, is not a comedian, but whose good looks is perfect for the Cinderella story concocted by the show’s producers. Filipinos, being lovers of underdogs and hopeless romantics, love Cinderella stories. (Although the pairing is not really a Cinderella story in real life as Maine Mendoza is a graduate of Culinary Arts in La Salle-St. Benilde who did her internship in New York.) And there is the mystery of Maine Mendoza’s voice. All throughout the show Yaya Dub communicates through Dubsmash and writing her thoughts. The audience is being teased to anticipate hearing the real voice of Yaya Dub. The concept of a kalyeserye, the elements of soap opera, parody and comedy, the Cinderella story, with a sprinkling of mystery, and music, and the comedic flair of Wally, Paolo, Jose and of course, Maine Mendoza, and the good looks of Alden Richards all combined to propel the success of AlDub. Is the segment escapist entertainment? Of course it is. Joey de Leon’s opening spiel says it all. Should activists and issue advocates shun AlDub for being escapist? On the contrary, activists and issue advocates could learn a lot from the success of AlDub and how it is able to reach out to a broad audience.|

The dignity and vocation of homosexual persons A comprehensive explanation for same-sex attraction or homosexual tendencies and inclinations remains elusive to this day, but research undertaken within various branches of science and medicine at various levels indicate that male and female homosexuality, though different in character, have both biological and environmental causes. Sexual attraction towards the same sex is not a sin. But it is, in the light of our understanding of marriage, objectively disordered – in the sense that it is not ordered towards the union of male and female in a relationship of natural complementarity. Homosexual acts or practices that may arise from such attraction, although they may proceed from and be motivated by genuine affection between two persons of the same sex, are similarly not ordered to the union of the two persons and to the procreation of children. Because they are not unitive and procreative – the distinct qualities of a complementary union of man and woman in marriage – homosexual acts or practices are “contrary to the natural law”7. Hence, they are, from the perspective of natural law, gravely disordered and considered “sins gravely contrary to chastity”. The Catholic Church acknowledges that the number of men and women who have deep-seated homosexual tendencies could be more than we think and that this inclination “constitutes for most of them, a trial.” The Catholic Church looks at her children who have deep seated homosexual attraction with motherly compassion and paternal love, even as she reminds them that in cultures that have lost sight of the richness and diversity of friendships that enhance the human condition, those who struggle with homosexuality are called to witness to the life-giving nature of virtue-based friendships not ordered to sexual acts. Those who find themselves sexually attracted to others of the same sex are called to develop chaste friendships with both men and women. The Church certainly recognizes that like all growth in virtue, this challenge is a difficult one that will require a robust supernatural life that is radically open to the grace and mercy of God. Frequent recourse to the sacraments of penance and the Holy Eucharist is a
necessary condition for growth in holiness. The Social Reality of Homosexual Unions Over the past few years, in an increasing number of countries, including traditionally Catholic countries, homosexual unions have been granted legal recognition equal to that of marriage. In our understanding of God’s creation of man and woman in complementarity and in His establishment of marriage, however, there are absolutely no grounds for considering homosexual unions to be similar or even remotely analogous to God’s plan for marriage and the family.10 A homosexual union is not and can never be a marriage as properly understood and so-called. In response to this emerging social reality and for the guidance of the faithful, therefore, the Congregation for the Doctrine of the Faith instructs: In those situations where homosexual unions have been legally recognized or have been given the legal status and rights belonging to marriage, clear and emphatic opposition is a duty. One must refrain from any kind of formal cooperation in the enactment or application of such gravely unjust laws and, as far as possible, from material cooperation on the level of their application. In this area, everyone can exercise the right to conscientious objection. Concretely, this means that Catholics cannot participate in any way or even attend religious or legal ceremonies that celebrate and legitimize homosexual unions. Understandably, this will be a particularly heavy cross for families that have been touched by homosexuality. The Church reaches out with compassion to these families whose loved ones have entered into such unions. In countries where homosexual unions have not been legalized – a vast majority of countries worldwide, including the Philippines – Catholics are called to give witness to the whole moral truth about human sexuality, which is contradicted “both by approval of homosexual acts and the unjust discrimination against homosexual persons.” Moreover, Catholics are called to resist all attempts to normalize homosexual behavior and homosexual unions in their culture. - To be continued
Pope Francis, pope of the people!
POPE Francis captured not only the hearts of the American people, he also earned the admiration of the non-religious people. From his acts of compassion, such as his embrace of a severely disfigured man, to his Encyclical on the environment and his forgiveness of those who had abortions, he has earned the respect of non-Catholics. No less than CNN, the U.S. television network, called Pope Francis as the “People’s Pope”. All the anchorpersons were amazed of this 78 years old awesome Head of the Catholic Church. People lined the streets for hours to see him and awaited what he would speak of. Pope Francis was on apostolic visit, 3 days in Cuba and 6 days in 3 US cities—Washington D.C., New York and Philadelphia. Before he left Cuba, he urged Cubans “to build bridges, break down walls, sow seeds of reconciliation.” The Pontiff arrived for the first time in U.S. at Andrews Air Force Base outside Washington, where he was greeted by US President Barack Obama, his wife Michelle and their two daughters as well as Vice President Joe Biden and wife. He opted for a Fiat 500, declining the limousine. He insists on using the open Popemobile in travelling, to be closer to the masses. Pope Francis was welcomed by President Obama and wife at the South Lawn of the White House before a crowd of 15,000. Amidst dozen of applause, the Pope talked about his being a son of an immigrant, bringing to the attention of the President and the American people that the US is largely built by the families of immigrants. He said that American Catholics are committed to building a society that safeguards the rights of individuals and communities and rejects all forms of unjust discrimination. He said that the US Bishops are called to be vigilant to preserve the right to religious liberty and defend what would threaten or compromise that freedom. He praised the President’s initiative to reduce air pollution, thus, the Pope urged the need to solve the effects of climate change to protect the future of the children. He quoted Martin Luther King and said that “we have defaulted on a promissory note and now is the time to honor it. Humanity still has the ability to work together in building our common home (Laudato Si). As Christians inspired by this certainty, we wish to commit ourselves to the conscious and responsible care of our common home.” He encouraged support to the efforts of international community to protect the vulnerable and to stimulate development so that “our brothers and sisters everywhere may know the blessings of peace and prosperity which God wills for his children.” The Pope’s speech in English was interrupted by several applauses. Pope Francis was the first Pontiff to address the Joint Session of US Congress. Several Popes were invited but Pope Francis was the first to accept it. Again, speaking in English, he received several standing ovations and sustained applause, one of which was his greetings “I am most grateful for your invitation to address this Joint Session of Congress in the land of the free and the home of the brave”. He stated that citizens of a country has a mission, a personal and social responsibility. He told the members of Congress that their responsibility is to defend and preserve the dignity of their fellow citizens in the pursuit of the common good. He would like to dialogue with: the elderly who are storehouse of wisdom forged by experience; the young who are working to realize their great and noble aspirations; with the members of Congress and would like to do so through its historical memory of their people who shaped fundamental values in the spirit of the American people. H said “I would like to mention four of these Americans: Abraham Lincoln, Martin Luther King, Dorothy Day and Thomas Merton. A nation can be considered great when it defends liberty as Lincoln did, when it fosters a culture which enables people to “dream” of full rights for all their brothers and sisters, as Martin Luther King sought to do; when it strives for justice and the cause of the oppressed, as Dorothy Day did by her tireless work, the fruit of a faith which becomes dialogue and sows peace in the contemplative style of Thomas Merton.” He also talked about the refugee crisis of a magnitude not seen since World War II. He reminds all to remember the Golden Rule: “Do unto others as you would have them do unto you”. He urged all to treat others with the same passion and compassion with which we want to be treated. It also applies to our responsibility to protect and defend human life at every stage of its development. He advocates global abolition of death penalty. He stated how essential the family has been to the building of this country. Talking again about immigrants, the Pope said “We, the people of this continent, are not fearful of foreigners, because most of us were once foreigners.” Vice President Joe Biden and Republican House Speaker John Boehner are both Catholics. Pope Francis was the first Pope to address the U.N. General Assembly. He called upon the world community to put aside their “partisan interests and sincerely strive to serve the common good”. Pope Francis assured of his prayer to Almighty God that the U.N. its member States, and officials, will always render an effective service to mankind, respectful of diversity and capable of bringing out, for sake of the common good, the best in each people and in every individual. He mentioned about the abuse of the environment, drug trafficking accompanied by trafficking in persons, money laundering, the arms trade, child exploitation and other forms of corruption. He mentioned about right to education, religious freedom, right to life and right to existence.

Ipinihayag din nito ang Conrado Achuela was proclaimed as this year’s grand winner of the Search for Huwarang Pantawid Pamilyang Pilipino by DSWD.|
Solo parent named ‘huwaran’ A FAMILY from Barangay Salbang, Paoay, Ilocos Norte, led by solo parentfather Conrado Achuela is this year’s grand winner of the Search for Huwarang Pantawid Pamilyang Pilipino. This is the second time that a solo parent won the grand prize. “Hindi po ito gamot sa kahirapan, tulong po ito para makatawid sa hirap,” he said in reference to the conditional cash transfer (CCT). Speaking one-liners in English tentatively, 59-year old Mang Conrado believes the CCT program of the Social Welfare Department is no magic pill. He has raised his four daughters for 10 years now with some help from the program. His wife died from post partum depression two months after she gave birth to their youngest. He remains single to this day and has no plan of getting married again. His prority now is to make sure his four children religiously go to school. He has an impressive organic pinakbet garden and raises livestock such as chickens, goats and pigs. He encourages other families in the
community to do the same. Mang Conrado said selling pigs will help them eke out a living. His kids sells vegetables in the market three to four times a month. “Yung kita po, we divide among us para sa aming personal na pangangailangan,” said the eldest Hazel who is in 3rd year college taking up BS Angriculture Major in Animal Science as a scholar at Mariano Marcos State University. She wants to be an agriculturist someday like her father. She admits that the cash his father gets from DSWD’s 4Ps as a beneficiary is not enough but the latter makes sure it is spent for their educational needs. The family bested four others - two pastors and two other ‘organic’ farmers from Antique, Bohol, Benguet, and Laguna. The five finalists were chosen from a roster of regional winners.
Mang Conrado received a trophy and P30,000 cash prize on top of his P20,00 reward as regional winner. He intends to use some amount to start his piggery to help other fathers start theirs. The annual search is now on its 4th year. “Like what Mang Conrado has shown, the search is looking for that family that embodies resiliency, faith and hope for a better future. Hindi lang umaasa kundi nagsisipag. He has this quiet strength and is very hardworking,” said Christina Gates, a clinical psychologist who served as one of the national judges. The presentation of the regional finalists and proclamation of the grand winner was the highlight of the National Family Day celebration on Sunday, October 4 at the Philippine Sports Arena, formerly ULTRA, which was attended by thousands of CCT beneficiaries. DSWD is working on the passage of the bill that will make the CCT a law. Addressing the crowd, Secretary Dinky Soliman called for public support.|

Student journalists convened for Schools Press Conference BATANGAS CITY - The 2015 Division Schools Press Conference opened on October 7 at the Batangas City Sports Coliseum where elementary and high school campus journalists and their advisers from 10 school districts and private schools gathered to learn more and to compete in the school paper contests. Former ABS-CBN reporter Ryan Edward Chua was guest of honor where he discussed what makes a successful journalist. He said that you have to start young and it takes a lifetime of preparation to be a good journalist. One has to be a wide reader and curious because you have to be knowledgeable about anything before you can write, he added. Chua likened a journalist to a politician because their work is public service. He also stressed that one must have
a purpose in writing and must ask oneself what good will this writing contribute to the community. The event was also graced by Batangas Board Member Marvey Marino who represented Mayor Eduardo Dimacuha. He talked about the different school buildings and other infrastructure projects implemented by the city government this year. He also urged the young journalists to spread the good news about Batangas City and help in promoting the city. Marino also inducted the officers of the Batangas City Association of Elementary and Secondary School Paper Advisers (BCAESSPA)led by Luis Borbon as president. Another highlight of the opening program was the dance presentation of the Indak Bambino of Casa Del Bambino Emmanuel Montessori.| ANGELA J. BANUELOS
