5-way fight for Governor of Batangas Province IT’S a 5-way fight for governor of Batangas! Ma. Chona M. Dimayuga. Sina ‘Cong. Nikki’ at Atty.

Internet addiction

OCTOBER 19 - 25, 2015

OPINION

HERE’S a new addiction in the block. It’s called internet addiction. And it’s on the rise, with frightening speed, especially affecting young people, like kids, students, and young professionals. They are not of the type prone to drugs or drinks. Rather their addiction is like that of gambling. A certain compulsion dominates them and interferes in their daily duties, wasting a lot of time and energy, and sometimes, money in the process. They can look very decent and normal, at least in appearance. But we know we all have feet of clay. It would be good if we are aware of this clear and present danger, and prepare ourselves accordingly. Early warning signs may be deterioration of grades for students, and negligence of some basic duties for the young professionals. Students who have been good in class suddenly turn south in class performance. That’s because they now find it hard to concentrate on their studies. They often interrupt their studies to answer the messages on their cellphones, and often check if there are new messages. They upload photos, usually inane selfies, on social media everyday, and comment on almost all of what their friends post in the internet. The kids are practically taken away by the many games ........................................................................................................................................................ the internet offers. The myth of inclusive growth under the neoliberal regime ON September 26, the episode that featured the first date of Alden Richards and Yaya Dub in the All for Juan and Juan for All segment of popular noontime show Eat Bulaga, the hashtag #AlDubEBforLOVE reportedly drew in a record-breaking 25,652,800 tweets. AlDub has garnered a broad segment of followers from people as young as nine or 10, to senior citizens, and from the masses to the middle class. AlDub has followers all over the globe. “Building inclusive economies, building a better world” is the theme of this year’s Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation meeting to be held in Manila this November. Inclusive growth has also been the rallying call of the Aquino administration. The United Nations Sustainable Development Goals from 2015 to 2030 dedicated several goals to address poverty and social inequities: SDG 1 No poverty SDG 2 Zero hunger SDG 5 Gender Equality SDG 8 Decent work and economic growth SDG 10 Reduced inequalities This is well and good; but only if there are concrete, effective measures to address poverty and social inequities. However, the prescriptions of the APEC, International Monetary Fund-World Bank( IMF-WB), the European Union, and the US are all the same: more liberalization of trade and investments, more deregulation of the economy, and complete privatization of remaining government services. These policy formulations are based on the belief that “what is good for business is good for the economy, and what is good for the economy is good for the people.” Those who fall into the cracks are provided with dole outs euphemistically called as conditional cash transfers (CCT). The word ‘conditional’ is supposed to make it less of a dole out. But if we are going to use as basis the saying “Give a man fish and you feed him for a day; teach a man how to fish and you feed him for a lifetime,” itis much like giving a man fish then telling him “next time before I give you fish, you better show proof that you fished in those damn polluted waters, where I dumped my toxic wastes. And by the way, don’t throw your trash there, it is already bad enough as it is.”

So what is the result of four and a half decades of neoliberal economics? Here are some data cited by alternative website Counterpunch in its article “The wreckage in sight we fail to see” by Joseph Natoli: the richest 1 percent in the US holds 38 percent of the wealth “and they are redistributing it ever more to their advantage” In the last 10 years, the income of the richest 1 percent increased by 70 percent while those at the bottom remained the same. The richest 10 percent own 76 percent of all wealth in the US while the bottom 40 percent are mired in debt In the Philippines, progressive think tank Ibon cited the following data in its 2014 year ended report: 66 million Filipinos or 68 percent of the population live on P125 ($2.70) or less per day the net worth of the 40 richest Filipinos rose to US$72.3 billion in 2014 from US$ 64.2 billion the year before; in 2010, their net worth was at US$27.8 billion, a 160 percent increase in four years the net income of the top 1,000 corporations amounted to P1.013.4 billion (US$22 billion) in 2013. Despite the fact that the Aquino government and its predecessors have religiously been pushing for these neoliberal policies, “unemployment rates have stayed at a record sustained high of between around 10-12% since 2000 or at an average of 11.0% over the last 15 years” (Ibon). The jobs being created are mainly part time work (90 percent in 2014) and more and more in the informal sector (68 percent in 2014). To make matters worse, the remaining, few salary and wage work are increasingly being contractualized, under flexible labor schemes of the government to attract more foreign investments.. Contractual workers are the most exploited: having no union, no security of tenure, low wages, no benefits, and with some under piece-rate, job order systems. So what do these tell us? Inclusive growth under the neoliberal regime is a fallacy, and greater liberalization, deregulation, and privatization would result in more poverty and worsening social inequities. More people would fall into, not just cracks, but in the bottomless pit of hunger and poverty.| BULATLAT.COM

The dignity and vocation of homosexual persons A Pastoral Response to the Acceptance of Homosexual Lifestyle and the Legalization of Homosexual Unions Last Part of 2-Part Series lawmaker must try to obtain at least the partial repeal of THE Congregation for the Doctrine of the Faith also the unjust law when its total abrogation is not possible at recommends the following actions that may be effective the moment. in societies that may begin to manifest an inclination to Arguments Against the Legalization of Homosexual Unions legalize homosexual unions: Marriage is a social institution that has been granted • Unmasking the way in which such tolerance [of homosexual unions] might be exploited or used in the privileges and benefits by the state because it is an institution of the natural law that contributes to the service of ideology; • Stating clearly the immoral nature of these unions; common good in a way that no other relationship can, • Reminding the government of the need to contain i.e., the procreation and education of children. the phenomenon within certain limits so as to safeguard Marriage binds a man and a woman together for life public morality and, above all, to avoid exposing young so that the offspring of their union would have the people to erroneous ideas about sexuality and marriage experience and benefit of the complementary male and that would deprive them of their necessary defenses and female presence in their total development. contribute to the spread of the phenomenon. Our political circus TERESA R. TUNAY, OCDS

…and that’s the truth WITH the Comelec premises reportedly looking like a plaza on a fiesta during the week of politicians filing their Certificate of Candidacy (COC), the air waves are sizzling with more news and interviews related to the forthcoming 2016 elections. With candidates of rather colorful public images, character or background, the scene is getting to look like a veritable circus—with barkers, freak shows, and animals big and small. Some candidates roar (like lions), some come on heavy (like elephants), some inspire fear (like snakes), some look cute (like talking parrots), some are funny and amusing (like monkeys)—and all of them contribute to the season’s entertainment. A discerning voter without vested interests would realize that much about the candidates’ image is determined by how media portray them, and since media seem unable to be a hundred percent accurate, objective, and fair about doing their job in spite of their best intentions, voters must not depend solely on “what others say” in choosing candidates to vote for. Much of what is currently surfacing in the political field can serve not only as directional arrows to guide our choice, but also as indicators of our level of sophistication and intelligence as an electorate, and maybe even of who we are as a people. And so we try to look beneath the surface and in the process come to probe our psyche. For instance, most candidates do not speak meaningfully on issues. Even when hard-pressed for comment on, say, the conflict with China in the West Philippine Sea, or the Bangsamoro Basic Law, answers are “generic” and noncommittal. Doing your own research aided by Google won’t yield anything along this line. Does this silence mean candidates are simply playing safe, or lack knowledge of the given situation? Most candidates tell stories instead of discussing policies. Full of selfconfidence, they say they’re the man for the job but offer nothing solid about how they’re going to do the job. Coached no doubt by their publicists on the kind of image to project in order to appeal to as many people as possible, candidates score high at “porma” but almost zero on “plataporma”. If their avowed desire to “serve the people” is true, shouldn’t they at least “do their homework” and let the people know what to expect should they win? Surveys left and right are exploited and depicted by media as reliable indicators of candidates’ future performance at the polls. They are not presented for what they truly are—the voice of 1,000 or so voters out of 53,000,000. Ultimately the victims of such media’s magnification of survey’s significance are the poor and the majority of us who are not aware that like any human endeavor, surveys can be manipulated—if the price is right. It’s alarming to find out how many “political dynasties” we have, and that some of these dynasties include even extramarital family members. Following tradition and the ways of the world, all of such dynasties belong to the moneyed minority in our society. The “poor” candidates’ names are usually not found in the roster of dynasties. What does this imply, besides the already known fact that more often than not you need loads of money to run for public office? That only the multimillionaires are capable of serving the public? If cash is synonymous with clout in the political arena, does it follow that competent potential candidates may never have a crack at offices higher than that of barangay captain’s? If the existence of political dynasties proves anything at all, it is that power is addictive. And that’s the truth.|

.............................................................................................. for example, procreation and raising children.” Responding to Arguments for the Legalization of Homosexual Unions In any debate that runs current to a proposal to legalize homosexual unions, four major arguments have been and will continue to be advanced. The following enumeration and discussion is presented for the understanding and enlightenment of Catholics seeking appropriate responses to such arguments. 1. To deny homosexual unions the legal status of marriage is to unjustly discriminate against homosexual persons who simply wish to express their love and commitment to their same-sex partners as heterosexual spouses do. The Catholic response: Distinguishing between persons or refusing social recognition or benefits to specific individuals or groups of individuals is immoral only when it is contrary to justice. Marriage is more than just the mutual affirmation one’s love and commitment to a beloved. This is why the state regulates and licenses marriage in a way that it does not regulate other types of friendship, which to some degree, all involve the mutual affirmation of love and commitment between and among friends – because only

marriage can naturally and directly contribute children and a stable environment for the raising of those children, to the common good. Denying homosexual unions the social and legal status of marriage simply affirms that these unions, as well as other non-marital unions similar to them, are not equivalent to marriage because they cannot give society what marriages can give. This is not opposed to justice. On the contrary, justice demands it.19 2. Homosexual unions should be legally recognized because individuals, whether they are heterosexual or homosexual, should have the right to do whatever they want to, if doing so does not hurt or impinge upon the freedom of others. The Catholic response: As the Congregation for the Doctrine of the Faith explains, it is one thing for individual persons to freely engage in their private activities, and another very different thing for them to demand that the state sanction these activities, especially when they would harm the common good. This would be the case if homosexual unions were legally recognized. Rightly respecting individual autonomy does not mean that society has to do everything that an autonomous individual demands

Financial Literacy Project for OFW kicks off OVER a month ago, at the Iriga Plaza Convention Center, Iriga City, BeamAndGo —an alternative remittance fintech that offers overseas Filipinos a safer way to provide for their families basic needs—launched the first installment of its LearnAndGo series called “The Family FQ Workshop with the Faustos”. In partnership with dedicated financial literacy advocate and FQMom.com blogger, Rose Fres Fausto and family, together with the driven cooperation of Iriga City Mayor Ronald Felix “Gang-gang” Aleflor and Iriga LGUs, a jam-packed venue of over 500 attendees were welcomed by the BeamAndGo team. The crowd was a multifarious mix of OFW families, members of the academe, religious sectors, businessmen, city officials and even the common fisher folk and farmers who were prominently living in the area. “Our project, LearnAndGo, is a financial literacy workshop series that aims to provideFilipinos, especially

the families of OFWs, the necessary knowledge they would need tosuccessfully manage their money savings and to empower them to sustain their future,”said BeamAndGo Marketing Director, Albert Christian Go. The 5-hour occasion highlighted the Fausto family’s helpful tips on setting aside savings for the rainy days, insights on money investing and advice on how to raise more financiallyresponsible children or as Rose Fres Fausto had called it, “children with High FQ (Financial Intelligence Quotient) that are armed with Economic Self-Defense.” Rose and husband, Marvin, resonated words of encouragement to the audience. They said, “You don’t need to be rich or highly-experienced in investments. Just a simple habit of setting aside money. We believe that investing is for everyone.” Mayor Alfelor also chipped in on sharing some common counter-productive habits of people when it comes to handling money such as

buying excessively on discount prices only to end up spending more, opting to loan money to use it for luxuries and even using own savings to throw extravagant feasts during local fiestas. “This is a glimpse of the truth. We focus on the illusion of money because of fear—weare scared to lose money. If there is no money on our pockets and there is someone offering to lend some, we immediately loan money just to fill our pockets, temporarily. Because we don’t know how to use money, we don’t know where it ends up going. We become unaware of the money that comes and goes and at the end, we find ourselves losing everything”, he mentioned. Adding up all these insights was knock in the door for most attendees— some being OFWs themselves who weren’t able to save wisely. Fellow Irigueno, Remie shared, “ Ihave been an OFW in Saudi Arabia for the longest time in the past but none of my savings sent to the Philippines had been used properly because I was not

able to teach my children how to use money intelligently.” Salve, another Irigueno who went through tough times growing up shared, “I was able to share my memory when I was still young and how I had learned that no matter how much money you have, if you only end up spending most of it, you won’t have anything to keep foor important expenses. The workshop was a helpful reminder that even thelittlest amount set aside can be a good investment for your future.” Jonathan E. Chua, CEO of BeamAndGo, expressed his delight over the positive feedback of the Iriguenos to the LearnAndGo kick-off event. He said: “BeamAndGo isecstatic to have jumpstarted the LearnAndGo series with flying colors, here in Iriga City. It was always going be about empowering Filipino families to have a better understanding of money savings, investments and finance handling. We are a firm believer that financial literacy is not just for the provider or breadwinner but

Further, more than 272,000 old-age and disability pensioners as of 31 December 2014 have started receiving a one-time benefit equivalent to one-month pension or Php10,000, whichever is lower. The increase is long overdue,” he said. GSIS is in a position to grant these benefits due to its record financial performance in 2014. receiving income and pension from other institutions; and the removal of personal appearance as a requirement to determine the status of local pensioners. Vergara further said that the turnaround time (TAT) in monitoring social insurance claims such as retirement, life insurance, disability, survivorship and funeral are well within the prescribed period. As a result of the reforms implemented by GSIS, the pension fund garnered the top spot in the 2014 Anti-Red Tape Act customer feedback survey of the Civil Service Commission covering more than 1,000 agencies. |

that it do. 3. Homosexual unions should be legally recognized because they are occasions for virtue, and as such, are good for society. There are many instances where same-sex couples have clearly grown in virtue, for example, the virtues of patience, forgiveness, and generosity, in and through their efforts to build a life together. The Catholic response: It may be true that homosexual unions, in certain cases, may be occasions for the growth of imperfect natural virtue. However, this alone would not be a reason for granting them the legal status of marriage, because they still do not and cannot contribute to the common good in the same way that marriages do. Moreover, the Catholic Church has the obligation to remind same-sex couples that natural virtue is insufficient for salvation and for the eternal beatitude to which everyone is called. Only the supernatural virtues are salvific. 4. Marriage as a social institution has evolved and changed numerous times over the course of human history to accommodate the needs of a particular society and culture. Thus, marriage should evolve once more to accommodate our contemporary notions of human sexuality that recognize the fluidity not only of gender identities but also of sexual orientations. The Catholic response: The truth about marriage, i.e., that it is a social institution ordered towards the life-long union of a man and a woman and the procreation and education of their children, is attainable by human reason.

revenues to Php231 billion. The pension fund chief also discussed the other reforms imple-mented in the last five years to provide responsive service for its 1.9 million stakeholders. These include the non-suspension of loan privileges of active members in suspended agencies, the reduction in the inaccurate volume of accounts from Php30 billion in 2010 to Php2.4 billion in 2014, the increased minimum basic pension of Php5,000 for old-age and disability pensioners; the relaxed entitlement requirement for survivorship pension, allowing surviving spouses of deceased members to receive pension even if they are

However, given fallen human nature, especially given the interior disarray of our carnal desires that obscures our intellect, it is a truth that is often hard to grasp, and only after a long time, and with the admixture of many errors. Not surprisingly, therefore, there has been and will continue to be throughout history, much confusion about the nature of marriage. Nonetheless, error is not a reason to abandon truth. A Pastoral Response to the Legalization of Homosexual Unions In societies that have legalized homosexual unions and in societies that are inclined to grant homosexual unions legal status, the Catholic Church is called, like her Lord did in his own time, to preach the good and saving news of marriage, by turning once again to God’s plan “in the beginning,” especially as it has been taught in the papal magisterium of Pope St. John Paul II in his Theology of the Body. To the Catholic people and to other Christian believers, the Catholic Church is called to renew her efforts to catechize the faithful about the true nature of creation and marriage. This is especially urgent for our young people who may be led into error and doubt by those social movements that want to normalize homosexuality and to legalize homosexual unions. For the Filipino people, we the Catholic bishops will be publishing a short catechism that specifically responds in simple language to the most common questions and objections raised by critics of the Church’s teaching on marriage and homosexual unions. Notably, however, we also acknowledge that the confusion surrounding the true nature of marriage cannot be driven out of the culture without the penance, prayer, and fasting of God’s holy people (cf. Mk. 9:29). To families with members who struggle with homosex-uality and who are tempted to ostracize their sons and daughters, the Catholic Church is called to preach mercy as her Lord did, without forgetting that the mercy of Jesus is always accompanied by his challenge to the woman caught in adultery that “from now on, do not sin again” (Jn. 8:11). For the Filipino people, we the Catholic bishops consider addressing the familial shame that is experienced by Filipino families touched by homosexuality. It is a shame that needs to be redeemed in Christ through the intercession of Mary, the Mother of God. Finally, and most importantly, to homosexual individuals who are tempted either to pride or to despair, the Catholic Church is called to preach the power of grace through prayer and Holy Communion, and the mercy of Jesus Christ through the sacrament of penance. It is Jesus Christ, and he alone, who can heal every broken human heart that yearns for unconditional love and authentic friendship. It is Jesus Christ, and he alone, who faithfully accompanies the homosexual person from grace unto glory. From the Catholic Bishops’ Conference of the Philippines, August 28, 2015 +Archbishop SOCRATES B. VILLEGAS President, Catholic Bishops’ Conference of the Philippines

Ten Things to Maintain My Emotional Health FR. WILFREDO SAMSON, SJ Pitik-Bulag 1. GARBAGE OUT – Some people have lots of emotional baggags in their hearts. They are in pain, frustrated, wounded, and some even hate their lives. And they don’t like to see happy, peaceful, and stable people. Misery loves company. And so, they will throw their emotional baggage to us. Don’t accept them. Don’t be affected. They can hurt you, but don’t allow them to destroy your inner peace. Their garbage is not your garbage. Don’t accept them. 2. PRAISES IN – Don’t reject praises and good words from others. If people say good words and praises for you, humbly accept them. It’s not pride. These positive feedbacks are validations that you are doing well. We need to love ourselves by accepting these positive words. Just say, “Thank you. It’s my joy to serve others.” 3. BREATH IN AND BREATH OUT – When your mind is tensed, tired, and anxious, pause for a while, and do some breathing exercises. Close your eyes for a few seconds, breath out all your negatives, and breath-in slowly the love of God floating in the air. 4. COUNT YOUR BLESSINGS – When we are anxious, we tend to forget our life’s blessings. Start counting your blessings. There is

wisdom in counting our graces, it reminds us that God knows our needs. If God guides, He provides. 5. BE POSITIVELY HOPEFUL – Positive hopeful thoughts generate a positive ambience to our hearts and minds. They make our tense mind more relaxed. They disposed ourselves to be more spontaneous, creative, and happy. Our minds seem to shrink when we are so pessimistic. Remember, positive attitude attracts positive opportunities and positive people. It disposes us to see the light and the good road to take. 6. A DAILY DOSE OF POCKETS OF PRAYERS – A daily minutes of silence and prayer will help us a lot. Pockets of prayers are better than not praying at all. God loves to hear a quick “Hello, God” and “Lord, what’s next?” than wait for your annual retreat when you’re not busy anymore. Sad to say, we are busy 365 days a year. 7. A TAP ON OTHER’S SHOULDER – It’s good to know that doing something for others bring more blessings. We feel good and blessed when caring becomes part of our habit. Our kindness begets kindness from others. 8. REGULARLY TAKE YOUR BIBLE CAPSULES – Reciting prayerfully our favourite Bible verses can create ripples in our hearts. Prayerfully repeat them many times. Allow God’s Word to touch your inner core. It is an

What’s your favourite verse? What about this one … “The Lord is my shepherd, there is nothing I shall want. (Psalm 23:1)” 9. MINIMIZE AND MAXIMIZE – Be good to yourself. Love yourself. If you cannot love yourself, you cannot love others genuinely. Minimize condemning and blaming yourself. Don’t be harsh to yourself. Be patient. Forgive yourself if you made a mistake or failed. There is always a bad hair day. Instead, magnify God’s unconditional love, patience, and understanding. Be good to yourself, you’re a good person. 10. DON’T KEEP ROTTEN EGGS – Make sure you don’t keep in your hearts those feelings of resentment, anger, envy, and hate. How to handle them? First, accept they are there. Then, slowly let go of them. Cast out all these negative feelings from your system. Beg the Holy Spirit to cleanse your heart from these rotten thoughts.| ANG mga participants sa 6th Kutitap cultural exchange program.|
