Aquino, kasunod ng pagbagsak ng dating tulay na kawayan, ang 22-taong gulang na tulay ang siyang pangunahing lagusan mula sa kabayanan patungo sa silangang bahagi ng lunsod, partikular sa Pallocan Growth Area, katuwang ng Bridge of Promise na nagdurugtong naman sa mga barangay ng Gulod Labac at Kumintang Ibaba. Calaca Booth, nanguna sa Agri-Trade Fair ng Ala Eh Festival INIUWI ng Calaca ang P75,000 nang mapanalunan nila ang Best Booth category sa katatapos na one week Trade and Agri Fair, na isa sa mga activities ng Ala Eh! Festival 2015 sa Sto. Tomas, Batangas. Iginawad sa closing ceremony ng ika-434 taong pagkakatatag ng lalawigan, lumutang ang ganda ng presentasyon ng booth ng Calaca sa 17 bayang lumahok sa nasabing trade fair, na naglalayong higit pang ipakilala ang mga dekalidad na produktong Batangueño at turismo na tunay na maipagmamalaki ng lalawigan. Kapansin-pansin ang mga sariwang gulay at iba pang produkto ng Calaca
bunga ng matagumpay na pagsasakahan dito na sinimulan ni dating punumbayan Sofronio Nas Ona Jr, ang gulayan sa barangay. Nakamit naman ng bayan ng Lobo ang 2 nd place na may premyong P50,000,3rd place ang Laurel (P30,000), 4th place ang San Luis (P25,000), at 5th place ang Tanauan City (P20,000). Napiling Best Managed Booth ang San Luis at Calaca na may premyong tigP15,000. Sa Agri Fair, na nilahukan ng 22 exhibitors, nakuha ng Tess Garden mula sa bayan ng Talisay ang best agri-booth na may premyong P25,000. Pumangalawa naman ang Olie’s Garden
(P15,000), at 3 rd place ang Lipa Beekeepers Marketing Cooperative ng Lipa City. Ayon sa Office of the Provincial Agriculture, naging matagumpay ang aktibidad na ito na layuning ipagmalaki ang mga produktong mula sa agrikultura na pangunahing kabuhayan ng lalawigan. Calumpang Bridge rises, opens again! Matatandaang nagpadala ng mga engineers ang Malacañang sa pamamagitan ng Department of Public Works and Highways (DPWH) at Department of Budget and Management (DBM), July 24-25, upang alamin ang pinsala at ang magiging rekomendasyon para rito. Kasunod ng mga pagbisitang ito, sumulat si Mayor Eduardo B. Dimacuha kay Pangulong Benigno Aquino na humihiling na pondohan ang isang mas matibay na suspension bridge na nagkakahalaga ng P288-milyon. Hindi inaprubahan ng Malacañang ang naturang kahilingan sapagkat ayon pa kay Deputy Executive Secretary for Financial Affairs (DESFA) Ronaldo Geron, hindi ito kasama sa panukalang 2015 budget. Kasunod pa ng pagbisita ng mga engineers, naghain ang DPWH ng dalawang opsyon – una, ang pagtatayo ang pansamantalang modular bridge na nagkakahalaga ng P30-milyon habang di pa nagagawa ang kabuan ng tulay, at ikalawa, ang rekonstruksyon ng naputol na bahagi ng tulay na nagkakahalaga ng P77-milyon. Ayon kay Congressman Raneo E. Abu, ang lumutang ang opsyon na paglalagay ng isang
C-200 Type Modular Single-Lane Emergency Bridge upang agarang mabigyang solusyon ang papalaking pinsala sa kabuhayan at ekonomiya ng lunsod at ang lumalalang suliranin sa trapiko. Ayon pa kay Abu, isa sa naging usapin kung kaya hindi kaagad nakaaksyon ang DPWH ay sapagkat ang Calumpang Bridge ay isang local bridge na nag-uugnay sa dalawang city roads at wala sa inventory of bridges ng DPWH. Ngunit hindi na ito itinuloy sa halip ay pinursige na maipagawa na kaagad ang buong tulay. Sa panayam ng Pahayagang Balikas, sinabi ni DESFA Geron na inirekomenda niya sa pangulo na ang ituloy ay ang rekostruksyon ng tulay sapagkat sasabihin lamang ng pangulo na bakit kakailanganing magdobleng gastos pa, kung pwede namang gawin na kaagad ito. Tiniyak din noon ni Geron na may mapagkukunan ng P77-milyong pondo para sa rekonstruksyon ng tulay mula sa Calamity Fund ng pamahalaang nasyunal. Isinagawa kaagad ang mga pagsusuri sa topograpiya ng ilog at umalalay naman ang City Engineers Office (CEO) na siyang direktang nakipag-ugnayan sa DPWH.

TOMAS Batangas- Binigyang pagkilala ng lalawigan ng Batangas ang mga natatanging indibidwal, korporasyon at lokal na pamahalaan na nangunguna sa pagbabayad ng buwis, Disyembre 8, sa bayan ng Sto. Tomas. Kasabay ng pagdiriwang ng ika-434 anibersaryo ng pagkakatatag ng lalawigan ng Batangas, pinamunuan ni Governor Vilma Santos Recto, Provincial Treasurer Fortunata Lat, Provincial Assessor Engr. Eduardo Cedo ang pagawad ng plake ng pagkilala sa mga top 10 tax payers ng Lalawigan. Nanguna sa hanay ng mga korporasyon sa lalawigan na may pinakamalaking buwis na binayaran ang SEM Calaca na nasa Brgy. San Rafael, Calaca na nagbuwis ng P197,008,509.40. Sinundan ito ng MMI properties –Mariwasa Holdings ng Brgy. San Antonio, Sto. Tomas - P75,119,625 at pang tatlo naman ang Fortune –La Farge Republic Cement Corporation na may kabuuang kabayarang buwis na P44,333,087.40. Sinundan ito ng Chevron Corp. ng San Pascual - P32,952,754.00; Golden Bay Grain Terminal Corp ng Mabini - P32,788.410.60; Bank of the Philippine Islands (iba’t ibang bayan) - P32,649,597.20; Central Azucarera de Don Pedro ng Nasugbu - P24,584,451.80; RFM Science Park Philippines, Sto. Perez ang kaniyang pag-atras sa pagtakbo bilang konggresista ng Batangas City Lone District. Ayon sa tala ng Comelec, hindi pa pormal na naihahain ni Perez ang kaniyang withdrawal. Ayon sa kalendaryo ng Commission on
Elections (Comelec), maaaring magpalit ng kandidato ang isang partido para sa isang umatras na kandidatong nabibilang sa naturang partido hanggang noong Huwebes, Disyembre 10. Samantala, alinsunod naman sa probisyon ng Omnibus Election Code, kung ang dahilan ng pagpapalit ng kanidadato ay bunsod ng pagkamatay ng isang kanidato, maaaring ihain ang kandidatura ng kapalit na kandidato hanggang bago alas-dose ng tanghali ng araw ng eleksyon.|
Kinomisyon ng DPWH ang United Technology Consolidated Partnership (UTCP) sa pagsasagawa ng soil boring tests, soil exploration at topographic and hydraulic survey ng ilog para siyang pagbatayan ng structural design ng itatayong tulay. Ang bumagsak na bahagi ng tulay naman ay pinasabog ng isang pribadong kumpanya na kinomisyon ng pamahalang lunsod upang tuluyang maisagawa ng pagtetest sa bahaging ito ng ilog at tuluyan ding maisagawa ang repair ng nawasak na bahagi ng dike. Unang linggo ng Oktubre 2014, pinirmahan ang Special Appropriation Release Order (SARO) para sa P77-milyong budget at ini-release nas a DPWH Regional Office IV-A. Dapat sana’y kasunod na kaagad ng bidding para rito, ngunit dahil sa sunud-sunod na holidays, natuloy lamang ang unang bidding pagpasok pa ng Nobyembre 2014. Upang maibsan ang grabeng problema sa trapiko, itinayo ng pamahalaang lunsod ang isang pontoon-type footbridge. May habang 123 metro at 2.5 metrong lapad, ang 22-panel na footbridge ay nagkahalaga ng P8.9-milyon ay pinundohan ng Calamity Fund ng lunsod. Matapos ang tatlong public bidding, tuluyang nai-award sa nag-iisang bidder na JBL Builders and Willim Uy Construction
Joint Ventures ang rekonstruksyon ng tulay sa halagang P64-milyon. Ikatlong linggo ng Enero 2015, ipinagkaloob ng DPWH-IVA sa JBL Builders ang Notice to Proceed sa proyekto. Matatandaang kinumpirma ni DESFA Geron sa panayam ng Pahayagang BALIKAS noong Agosto ng taong ito na may posibilidad nang matapos at tuluyang mabuksan ang Calumpang Bridge nitong nagdaang buwan ng Oktubre batay sa ulat ng DPWH. Noon namang Setyembre ay sinabing ngayong buwan ng Nobyembre maaaring mabuksan ang naturang tulay; ngunit noong unang linggo ng Nobyembre ay hindi pa man nabubuhusan ng concrete mix ang flooring ng tulay. Natapos na ang tulay ay bubuksan na nga sa publiko. IN our political discussions and exchanges, it’s just fine to be partisan as long as we are open and respectful of all other views, including those that are different and opposed to ours. We should avoid any form of extremism by demonizing others who do not agree with us. Partisanship is inevitable in our politics. And that’s simply because we have different backgrounds and orientations, different preferences and priorities. Given our human condition, let alone, our weakness, mistakes and failures, we will always have differences among ourselves. We should not be surprised by these, but rather learn to live with them as befits our human dignity. We should not allow that we be dragged by the dynamics of anger, animosity, and hatred. Charity should always rule, even in our political choices as it should in all other aspects of our life. Yes, we can be quite strong and fixed in our views, but this does not give us an excuse to let go of charity. In fact, these differences should be a good ground for charity to grow. Thus, the sharper the differences, the more intense should be our charity. We have to avoid painting those who disagree with us as if they are the very personification of evil, completely incapable of doing anything good or saying anything true and worthwhile. This would be a simplistic and naïve way of looking at things, and as such, is fraught with potential dangers. If we have to disagree, then let’s disagree amicably, respecting each other and each other’s position. No need for harsh words to be thrown, much less, uncharitable thoughts and bad intentions. Charity knows how to unite us even in our most hopeless and irreparable differences. Sad to say, many of us today are behaving the opposite of what is proper to us. It starts with our political leaders and candidates down to the electorate and even to the general population, including children. We have to stop this. We cannot paint a favorite candidate to be so perfect and saintly that we can observe no defect, mistake or fault in him. Neither should we picture a disliked candidate to be so bad that we can find no saving grace in him. Let’s always remember that all the saints and the appointed patriarchs and prophets of old had their defects and mistakes too, even after their conversion. They were always struggling, because they know that their sanctity is always a work in progress. It is never completed in this life. Also, even those who are generally considered as bad people are still capable of doing something good. I remember one Gospel episode where this possibility is illustrated. It’s in the Gospel of St. John: “But one of them, Caiaphas, who was high priest that year, said to them, ‘You know nothing at all; you do not understand that it expedient for you that one man should die for the people, and that the whole nation should not perish.’ “He did not say this of his own accord, but being high priest that year he prophesied that Jesus should die for the nation, and not for the nation only, but to gather into one the children of God who are scattered abroad.” (11,4952) It is quite clear that even if by living charity, we may appear to be suffering a defeat according to human standards, God in his providence would know how to derive good from it. We should not be afraid to suffer the consequences of human pride and worldly arrogance just because we try to be consistent with the requirements of charity. For those who love God and others, as St. Paul in his letter to the Romans would say, everything will always work out for the good. Now that we are going through this delicate political process of electing our next leaders, we should try our best to avoid the pitfalls of emotional, knee-jerk reactions to the issues at hand. Let us learn to be level-headed and to have a good grip of our emotions and passions. More than that, let us see to it that we follow the requirements of charity as strictly as possible. It is precisely in moments like this when charity is most needed. Let’s be careful with our words, and especially so with our thoughts and intentions. May they always be infused with charity, which is always the way to find the truth, to achieve justice, and fairness proper to us. Charity is never a drag in our politics. It is what politics needs most of all! Charity is what leads us to the common good.|

Statement on Coal Mining and Coal Power Plant Statement of the Dioceses of Dipolog, Ozamis, Pagadian, Iligan, and Marawi on Coal Mining and Coal Power Plant WE, the one hundred sixty-six (166) delegates of the 40th DOPIM Bishops-Clergy Convention, unanimously express our serious concern on the operation of coal mining and coal power plant that triggers apprehension among our people and poses environment threat in the provinces where such facility is being established. With faith in the Lord of Creation, we want to heed the call of Pope Francis in his encyclical Laudato Si that urges us all to care for the earth as our common home. Citing St. Francis of Assisi, the Holy Father persuades us to treat our common home like our sister. However, knowing the reality of our destructive attitude and activities towards her, the Pope writes that “The sister now cries out to us because of the harm we have inflicted on her by our irresponsible use and abuse of the goods with which God has endowed her. We have come to see? ourselves as her lords and masters, entitled to plunder her at will. The violence present in our hearts, wounded by sin, is also reflected in the symptoms of sickness evident in the soil, in the water, in the air and in all forms of life. This is why the earth herself, burdened and laid waste, is among the most abandoned and maltreated of our poor; she ‘groans in travail’ (Rom 8:22). We have forgotten that we ourselves are dust of the earth (cf Gen 2:7); our very bodies are made up of her elements, we breathe her air and we receive life and refreshment from her water” (Laudato Si,2). Since climate is a common good it is but right to be involved in the discussion of climate change especially that it is now destructive not only to properties to but also to lives. Accordingly, the world is on the brink of becoming an arid wasteland due to ‘unchecked human activities’. thousands of lives these past years and months are enough proof to awaken in us a commitment to safeguard creation and help mitigate their effects. Pope Francis, seeing the urgency of action in dealing with environmental crisis, points out the use of highly polluting fossil fuels – especially coal to be progressively replaced without delay (Cf. Laudato Si, 165). We cannot simply sit idly while seeing the unfolding of horrific events resulted by so called technological progress at the expense of nature. Instead we recommend the use of renewable energy which is of course not harmful to the environment and to humans. As Bishops of the Dioceses of Dipolog, Ozamis, Pagadian, Iligan, and Marawi (DOPIM), which comprise the civil provinces of Zamboanga del Norte, Misamis Occidental, Zamboanga del Sur, Lanao del Norte and Lanao del Sur, we completely oppose the operation of coal mining and coal power plants most especially within the aforementioned provinces. We do this not only because of our human responsibility, but as a call intrinsic to our Christian faith. We hereby urge all concerned – both the coal industry and the government – in the name of our Lord Jesus Christ to have the same concern. We also call the faithful and all people of good will be vigilant at all times and in all places because our common home is in danger of devastation. We will not allow ourselves to arrive at the point of no return. May God hear us and come to defend the beautiful creation He has entrusted to us. Climate Change “CLIMATE change is a global problem with grave implications: environmental, social, economic, political…It represents one of the major challenges facing humanity in our days. Its worst impact will probably be felt by developing countries in the coming decades.” (Pope Francis: Encyclical Letter “On the Case of Our Common Home”, n. 25, 24 May 2015) No less than Pope Francis, the Sovereign of the Universal Catholic Church spread all over the globe with membership from all known continents, races, and colors, made the deliberate option to formally and categorically address the phenomenon of climate change – the eventual and ultimate victim of which is humanity as a whole. Among other definitely serious and deadly consequences of climate change are the following: The progressive warming of the global climate. The gradual destruction of the world environment. The slow but sure wastage of earthly resources, the eventual loss of human lives well-included—when nature itself revolts against its destructors. It is definitely not a profound truth that a bomb-maker can be the victim thereof when it precisely explodes on him. The Church is certainly much concerned with the truths in the supernatural sphere. But this does not mean that the same Institution is indifferent to the realities in the natural order. Yes, the Church is continuously teaching the fundamental Commandment of Love of God. But the same Ecclesial Institution is also much concerned with the basic Commandment of Love of Neighbor. In other words, the Church is committed to affirm the glory of God and at the same time, also mandated to safeguard the good of man. And when
the Church through the Pope himself speaks about the mortal dangers brought by climate change to humanity, this is but her obligation. So it is that the perpendicular love of God plus the horizontal love of man brings about no less than the reality of the Cross of Christ. The earth is the “Common Home” of humanity as a whole. It is God’s creation for man to live on even but temporally until he is called to his eternal abode. The truth of the matter is that God Himself saw to it that the earth was ready – the air and the waters, the sun and the moon, the land and the trees, the greenery and the animals – before He brought man to life and live thereon. What a pity if through his abuse and other misdeeds, he is in fact slowly but surely destroying his “Common Home” with all others brought about precisely by climate change. The vicious exploitation, degradation and destruction of nature usually on account of avarice and greed, the consequent phenomenon of pollution on account of a throw-away social culture, the consequent loss of biodiversity—all these and more challenge the integrity of nature, all these and more demean the environs and necessarily make man the ultimate victim. No. Man is not meant much less able to challenge nature because by so doing, he is the sure loser and victim. He is instead obliged to take care of nature so that nature takes care of him. Would that the just concluded international encounter of no less than leaders from countries the world over, one way or another sooner than later decidedly take remedial steps to counter climate change.

‘Philippine’s World Science Day pursuing a people’s science agenda towards a sustainable future JM AYUSTE LAB Notes FOR the second time, scientist-activist group AGHAM participated in the commemoration of World Science Day for Peace and Development (WSDPD) last November 10. The WSDPD was initiated by UNESCO back in 2001 to raise public awareness on the importance of science and to bridge the gap between science and societies. WSDPD is celebrated by different institutions, universities and NGOs worldwide who support the advocacy to use science as a vehicle for development and peace-building. This year’s local celebration was made possible through the efforts and support of the Institute for Science and Technology Research of the Polytechnic University of the Philippines, Agham – Advocates of Science and Technology for the People, PUP College of Science, College of Computer and Information Sciences, College of Engineering and Agham Youth – PUP Chapter. Science for a sustainable future The international theme this year was “Science for a sustainable future,” highlighting the role of science and technology in the development of the global economy, without sacrificing the integrity of our natural resources. In line with this year’s theme, an exhibit was mounted that aims to show how science and technology can be used to achieve a sustainable future. Our friends at AGHAM mounted a photo exhibit featuring our activities such as the People’s Science School Program, which mobilizes scientist and student volunteers to provide basic science education to local communities, and Environmental Investigation Missions to aid communities in their campaign to oppose destructive and pollutive projects such as large-scale mining and bioethanol plants. The exhibit also featured inventions and innovations by PUP students. Among these was an automated bioplastic producing-machine, which uses banana peels as raw material. The students also demonstrated the operation of an improvised quadcopter (a helicopter-like device operated by four rotors) for disaster response, which was an ensemble of cloth hangers, a second-hand CCTV camera and a Raspberry Pi computer. It is piloted using a remote-control previously used to operate a toy copter. A research poster presented by PUP science students picked my interest. It was about the development of a web-based software that uses historical farming data to produce a crop calendar for farmers. The students noted that they are still at the process of improving it as a part of their undergraduate thesis. While it is delightful to know that Filipino students have the astounding capacity to develop such useful researches and innovations, it is, at the same time, disappointing to realize that the fate of
the majority of these masterpieces will only gather dust in a stockroom somewhere. Science and national industrialization In a forum on the latter part of the day, one of the top scientists in the country, Dr. Giovanni Tapang gave us an overview of the sorry state of science and technology (S&T) in the Philippines. He pointed out that the lack of government support and low priority on research and development (R&D) is one of the reasons why local researches and inventions failed to be used in local industries. According to latest figures, the total amount of expenditures we allocate for R&D as a percentage of our Gross Domestic Product has been decreasing since 2002 at about 0.12%. This is way below the level prescribed by UNESCO, which is at least 1% of a developing country’s GDP. Even worse, until now there are no basic and heavy industries in the Philippines. For instance, the studentdevelopers of the bioplastic machine can never see it be used for industrial purposes since the existence of bioplastic manufacturing plants in the country is practically non-existent. The local industry has no capacity to produce complex industrial and consumer goods such that machines and electronic products are all imported abroad. Dr. Tapang said that the prevailing backward and stunted S&T is a result of the agrarian and pre-industrial characteristics of our economy. This is also stifles the potential of our scientists and technologists. We in AGHAM believe that the only way to address this is through the fulfillment of national industrialization grounded on genuine land reform and agricultural modernization in the Philippines. Only through this can we hope to escape the quagmire of poverty and stunted development of S&T in the Philippines. A serious review of world history would prove the efficacy of this strategy. APEC and its dangers Dr. Tapang warns that the renewed globalization agenda being pushed by APEC will surely extinguish our opportunity to realize an industrialized Philippines. Under this scheme, our economy will be further openedup to allow the free flow of goods and human resources as a part of a global value chain (GVC). According to him, this will further deteriorate the capacity and productivity of what little remains of our manufacturing and agricultural sectors. As Ibon Foundation points out, from 1996, the share of manufacturing industry to the Philippine GDP dwindled from 25.4% to 22.6% while that of agriculture shrank from 21% to 10% during the same period. Aside from this, APEC also plans to push for publicprivate partnerships (PPP) to support the commercialization of science and technological innovations. We’ve

Politics and internet in the age of self-representation THE selfie is both derided and hailed as a popular form of self-expression; but politically-speaking, what does it really signify? The ‘butterfly effect’ reminds us that a flap of a butterfly’s wings can cause a hurricane on the other side of the world. Applied to the taking of selfies, perhaps it is like the flutter of a butterfly’s wings: every selfie generates a disturbance somewhere else. The selfie effect is political which can be deadlier than a hurricane or tornado. Each selfie reflects and reinforces the dominance of individualism in contemporary society. This is made possible by the Internet which is ironic since the cyberspace is not a single entity but composed of multiple networks. How social is social media when selfies glorify the individual and not the anonymous multitudes? But we are not appalled because the ruling ideology promotes competitive individualism. When we pose for a selfie, we think it is a liberating act when in fact it symbolizes our submission to mainstream corporate-sponsored ethos. As a counter-argument, we can highlight the social uses of selfies. This we can’t deny since there are visible proofs of how selfies are maximized by mass movements across the globe. We can also cite the value of selfies to many individuals who were deprived of the right to assert their identities for a long time. In the past, their concept of self was imposed by others, but selfies allowed them to see their true selves for the first time. Should we deny them this epiphany? As the taking of selfies becomes more ubiquitous because of mobile internet, there must be a better way of addressing its political role. It is easy to perceive the conservatism of this act but we can’t ignore its positive legacy at the same time. Perhaps the framing of the debate can be improved. We certainly can’t ban selfies but there’s a need to develop a critical appreciation of this seemingly mundane thing. Let the so-called social media influencers discuss the proper mechanics and ethics of selfie taking but for those of us who are interested in politics, especially the progressive side of politics, we have broader concerns to tackle. For example, if selfies promote individualism, we should probe the conditions that allowed this selfish attitude to dominate society. And if selfies empower many lonely individuals, we should question why the smartphone-powered visuals could override other potent acts of solidarity. It is individualism, not selfies per se, that should trouble us. We live at a time when there’s a breakdown of social institutions and the collective spirit is rejected in favor of self-interest. Technology developers and innovators are primarily in search of commercial success and not philanthropy or social change. When they offer something new, disrupting the social order is far from their minds. The selfie was never conceptualized to challenge the status quo. Narcisisstic selfies, therefore, should not distract us from our urgent task: Changing the social conditions that put premium on individual glorification over community solidarity. As stated earlier, we should not ignore the power of selfies to inspire individuals, especially those who have been marginalized in society. Indeed, when individuals cannot find deeper ties around them, they cultivate a stronger sense of the self. If selfies can give an instant feeling of completeness, why stop people from pursuing this harmless addiction in the digital age? But there’s a problem if we simply accept that only selfies can provide a meaningful identity to individuals. The desire to be seen is perhaps a modern thing and we may wrongly assume that this can be achieved only through selfies. When societies disintegrate or individuals lose collective attachments, we become more aggressive or desperate to give better representation of our lives. We cling to these idealizations for survival. Our task, therefore, is to assert that there are superior alternatives to selfies. We should also demonstrate that community-building is more effective way of creating solidarity among individuals. That political participation reduces or even eliminates the superficial longing for personal aggrandizement. Or in other words, the idea of excessive selfies will be rendered irrelevant if selfies become unnecessary in the real world. To put it bluntly, no selfie enthusiast will thrive in a community where everyone is immersed in a collective political undertaking. Taking selfies is already part of our normal routine but why is there a lingering notion that it is awkward or that we have to defend it from time to time? To remove the guilt, we have to identify the roots of this confusion. At the risk of antagonizing the anti-selfies, I dare say that the abnormality lies elsewhere. The real problem is not the selfie or the selfie taker but our society which elevates individual competition as the essence of living. As long as there is a mad scramble for viral selfies, it is a troubling indicator of a society lacking in grassroots solidarity. The solution is not to mock the lonely Internet user but to change what is wrong in the selfie world.| BUL A TL AT . COM

PVB, Talisay LGU enters P140-m loan agreement to build gov’t center FURTHERING in its objective to help in countryside development, Philippine Veterans Bank (PVB) has recently entered into a partnership with the Municipal Government of Talisay, Batangas whereby the bank will be providing the municipality with a Php 140 million loan facility. Under the agreement
signed by both parties, PVB will be lending the said amount to the Municipality of Talisay which will be used to finance the design and construction of the planned Talisay Government Center. Part of the 10-year loan will also be used to purchase the lot where the center will be developed. Philippine Veterans Bank
is a private commercial bank in the Philippines owned by Filipino World War II veterans and their heirs. It has 60 branches strategically located nationwide and caters to both corporate and retail financial markets. It is also an authorized government depository bank. As part of its charter, 20% of PVB’s annual net income
is entrusted to the Board of Trustees for the Veterans of World War II (BTVWWII) for the benefit of World War II veterans and their descendants. With this loan facility, the bank is optimistic that it would be instrumental in realizing a robust project, the new home to the local government of Talisay.|
