Forum asks students IN a forum at the Polytechnic University of the Philippines (PUP) on the first day of the official campaign season, first of a series on "Opinion Polls and Elections: Making Media Coverage Count" for the National Capital Region, the Phililpine Press Institute (PPI) urges students and educators to be circumspect about surveys and to engage in public discussions. "There are many issues that need to be brought out during elections and precisely for this reason that we have to know the positions of the candidates on foreign policy, education, migrant workers, children, women, health services and a lot more;" said PPI training director Tess Bacalla.

In the light of election surveys, Bacalla said that news consumers have to know the real issues behind them and what they mean for the public. She also discussed vetting process that should be involved when writing stories about opinion polls. Citing recent survey results, Carole Sarthou from the Marketing and Opinion Research Society of the Phililppines (MORES), the umbrella organization of survey firms, said that the media have the responsibility to give the right information about surveys. "The credibility of a survey depends on its being factual and truthful," she said.

I ENTERED one of the rooms of a pre-school where I conduct some basic catechism classes for teachers. As I waited for the LCD projector to be set up, I sat on one of the tiny chairs. I noticed that the chair had a strange backrest. I realized it was actually a small neon-colored knapsack designed to fit the seat’s metal frame. I curiously unzipped the bag and was surprised to see it filled with veeery delicious goodies: beef jerky, chocolates, juice tetra-pack drinks, mineral water, and a first-aid kit, etc. “It’s a grab bag, Father!” One of the teachers answered my curiosity. “Hey, this has enough to go out camping for a week!” I said to the amusement of everyone. “The children are required to replenish it every now and then. So in case the BIG ONE does happen, they have a fresh supply of survival items,” the school principal added. “Well, this one will need replenishing soon if you don’t get it out of my sight,” I said. *** With the impending scare of a coming BIG ONE, our country has been preparing and rehearsing for a monster earthquake. Hopefully it never happens because unlike Japan and other countries, we are still a long way from integrating a healthy preparedness into our mental and physical systems when a disaster strikes. However, I believe that whether a Godzilla of an earthquake will strike or not, it is more important to have a grab bag for eternity. Death, unlike natural disasters, is a certainty in the life of every person. The only uncertainty is when it will come, thus, there is greater reason for preparing a spiritual grab bag for eternal life. And this grab bag is the Holy Mass. How exactly is the Eucharist a grab bag for eternity? If a disaster grab bag is meant to provide us some basic needs to survive for a few days until help arrives, we can imagine how the Mass provides us with all that we need in order to be properly nourished until we reach our goal: heaven. The Catechism of the Church describes what the Eucharist is: “in the blessed Eucharist is contained the whole spiritual good of the Church, namely Christ himself, our Pasch. (no. 1324).” Now, what better spiritual nourishment than Christ Himself to feed us? The Holy Mass is also considered the most complete prayer given that in one celebration, the Sacrament allows us to adore God, thank God, ask His forgiveness, and to petition for our earthly and spiritual needs. Moreover, through the entire rite, one’s spiritual life is nourished and enriched with readings from and commentary of Scripture (the Liturgy of the Word) and an effective channel to offer ourselves in it, through Christ, in one act of thanksgiving for all of God’s blessings (the Liturgy of the Eucharist). And all of this is united to the “sacrifice of the Church” which every single Mass is. This is how compact every celebrated Mass is. The Catechism says, “The Church which is the Body of Christ participates in the offering of her Head. With Him, She Herself is offered whole and entire. (…) The lives of the faithful, their praise, sufferings, prayer, and work, are united with those of Christ and with his total offering, and so acquire a new value. Christ’s sacrifice present on the altar makes it possible for all generations of Christians to be united with his offering. (no. 1368)” This is not all! In a mysterious manner, if we truly prepare for every Mass, we become the ‘grab bags’ ourselves as we are filled with the infinite love, mercy, and merits of our Lord Jesus Christ. It is the mission of each Catholic, to discover how to dispense what he or she has received in and through the Holy Sacrifice. This is why, we must never take for granted our preparation for every celebration. Much of what we will receive will greatly depend on our inner dispositions (i.e. that one is not aware of having committed any grave and mortal sins) preparing ourselves to receive the most Sacred and Glorious Body, Blood, Soul and Divinity of our Lord Jesus Christ. United to these inner dispositions we manifest our faith in the Real Presence of our Lord through our external preparation and presentation. For example, the observation of the one-hour fast, wearing dignified and decent attire that is fit for an occasion that hosts our Lord and God and a “praying attention” in all of the parts of the celebration.|

On Carmma and karma THERE is a new movement that vows to reach out to the youth. The only thing is, those who gathered during the launching last February 4 were not young but were mainly comprised of white haired women and men. This is not surprising since those in attendance were mainly victims of Martial Law. It could be argued that all Filipinos during that time except, of course, those who were close to the Marcos dictatorship and those who benefited from Martial Law were victims. It’s true. Butthose whose lives were changed forever after being arrested and tortured, or whose loved ones were killed, abducted and disappeared, would, expectedly, cry the loudest at any sign that the Marcos family would make a comeback. And that probability rings with urgency now that Ferdinand Marcos Jr. or Bongbong, the son of the late dictator, is running for vice president. Called Carmma or the Campaign Against the Restoration of the Marcoses to Malacañang, the movement vows to frustrate the bid of Bongbong Marcos for the vice presidency, which is just one step away from Malacañang. Why is it necessary to ensure Bongbong’s defeat at the polls? Because if he gets elected as vice president, this would practically absolve the Marcoses of all the sins they committed against the Filipino people. Bongbong would use the power of his position to set aside all cases against them and erase accurate descriptions of what happened during those dark years of the country’s history. And for the Marcos family, the vice presidency is just a stepping-stone for Bongbong to reclaim the presidency. Bongbong and the Marcos family are not yet in power, at least nationally, but they have already been using social media to make it appear that there was no corruption, no criminality and no human rights violations in the country then. It’s as if Marcos did not plunder the country’s wealth and resources and monopolize the major sectors of the economy such as telecommunications, electricity distribution, the sugar, rice, and coconut industries, among others; it’s as if the nation did not suffer from an economic crisis, a sugar crisis, a rice crisis, an oil crisis, and a financial crisis; it’s as if the nation was not buried in debt, andthe value of the peso did not plunge; it’s as if the nation was not dragged in the US wars of aggression in Vietnam and Korea and US troops stationed in the country were not allowed to elude justice for killing Filipinos, including children; it’s as if the scars of the victims of human violations and their relatives were self-inflicted.

Why reach out to the youth? The youth have no memory of those dark years of Martial Law. And the Marcos family and their supporters have been using the internet and social media to distort the facts and make it appear that the country was prosperous under Martial Law. They deny that were thousands of victims of human rights violations. Why are the Marcoses able to distort the facts? First, because justice has not been served to the thousands of victims of human rights violations and their relatives. The Marcoses were never pursued for their crimes against the people. Sensing that the succeeding presidents were not keen on running after the Marcos family, the victims filed a class action suit in Hawaii against Marcos, who was in exile there then. In 1995, the Federal Court of Hawaii found Marcos guilty of grave human-rights violations and awarded $2 billion in compensatory damages to the victims. Instead of ensuring that justice is served, the succeeding administrations after Marcos were more concerned about getting the government’s share in the ill-gotten wealth of the Marcos family and in getting concessions from the family, which still controlled the politics in the Ilocos provinces. Worse, violations of human rights are still being committed with impunity. Second, because instead of seizing the ill-gotten wealth of the Marcos family, the succeeding administrations got mired in legal cases and in negotiations for out-of-court settlements. The Filipino people were never informed of the status of these cases and what happened to the assets that have been turned over to the government through the courts and through settlements. Third, the accurate historical account of the dark days of Martial Law was never taught to students. Fourth, the succeeding administrations pursued the same economic programs and policies of the Marcos dictatorship resulting in the worsening of the crisis and the declining quality of life of ordinary Filipinos. This is why the Marcos family and their supporters are able to claim that the people were better off and prices were lower during the Marcos dictatorship. Fifth, US troops are back and they are still able to elude justice, such as in the case of Lance Cpl. Daniel Smith and US Marine Joseph Scott Pemberton. Sixth, Bongbong Marcos is able to capitalize on the incompetence and the bungling of the administration of Benigno Aquino III to present himself as an alternative.

IBAAN BATANGAS- Muli na namang nagkaisa ang mga mamamayan sa bayang ito nang ipagdiwang nila ang ika184 taong pagkakatatag bilang isnag hiwalay na munisipyo nitong nakalipas na linggo, Pebrero 9-11, 2016. Tampok sa pagdiriwang na ito ang iba’t ibang gawaing inihanda para sa mga mamamayan ng Ibaan sa pangunguna ni Punumbayan Juan Danny Toreja at Ikalwang Punumbayan Sixto Yabyabin at iba pang mga local na opisyal ng munisipyo. Sa unang araw ay nagkaroon ng malawakang job fair para sa mga kabataan na naghahangad ng trabaho. Maraming kabataan ang dumalo sa nasabing programag sinimulan banadang alasnuwebe ng umaga at natapos ng alas-sais gabi. Sa ikalawang araw, Pebrero 10, ay ginanap ang Palaro ng Lahi sa Recto Gym bandang ala una ng hapon. Kabilang sa mga kalahok ang mga estudyante ng DJAMNHS, ang mga pulis, Kababaihan presidents, ibang miyembro ng DSWD, Day care Workers at Bureau of Fire Protection. Tampok sa palaro ang Kainan ng Tamales, Maria went to market, Talupan ng Tubo at Habulan ng biik. Nakisaya rin ang mga manonood sa palarong naganap na kanya- kanyang kuha ng litrato dito. Sa huling araw ng selebrasyon ay ginunita ang Les KuHLiemBo Festival na nagbubuklod sa mga mamamayan ng Ibaan. Ito ay ang paggunita sa mga kilalang produkto sa Ibaan, ang tamales, kulambo, habi, liempo at tubo. Sa pagsisimula ng pagdiriwang ay nagkaroon ng Banal na Misa sa simbahan ng Ibaan bandang ala-sais ng umaga. Kasunod nito ang Festival Street Dance Parade kung saan sumasayaw ang mga kabataan na may kasuotan na gawa sa habi at kulambo habang pumaparada sa kalsada. Ang naturang Street Dance ay isang patimpalak kung saan ang mga piling estudyante sa bawat sitio ng bayan ay kalahok dito. Pinaghandaan naman ito ng kapulisan ng Ibaan upang maging maayos ang nasabing parada. Pagkatapos ng Street Dance ay pinarangalan ang mga nanalo sa Festival Costume Contest.
