The most recent period of activity lasted from 1965 to 1977, and was characterised by the interaction of magma with lake water, producing violent phreatic explosions. These generated base surges and cold pyroclastic flows, which travelled several kilometres across Lake Taal and devasted villages on the lake shore, killing several hundred people. The population of the island itself had been evacuated when the eruption began. Although the volcano has been dormant since 1977, it has shown signs of unrest since 1991, with strong seismic activity and ground fracturing events, as well as the formation of small mud geysers on parts of the island.

TVPL experts from DENR, PHIVOLCS, National Museum, and the University of Santo Tomas will present research-based information focused on the Protected Landscape. Mayor Epifanio Sandoval of San Nicolas, Batangas will present the Ecotourism Business Plan of the Municipality. De La Salle Lipa Tourism Faculty and Students are also collaborators in this activity. On Wednesday, Nov 26, there will be field visits in Old Tanauan, inTalisay, Ambon-ambon Falls in Laurel, Old Taal Church Ruins in

I am so very helpless and I feel alone. Intercede for me that Almighty God may bring swift aid where it is needed most. Come to my assistance in my great time of need! Pray for me that I may be given the comfort and help of Jesus. Most importantly, I ask that you pray that I may one day join you and all of the saints in heaven to praise God in consolation, rest and joy for all eternity. I will remember your prayers, O Holy St. Jude. I will honor you as my patron as so many have before me because of the graces God deigns to give freely at your request. Amen.

DENR sees young people as info agent on Climate Change THE Department of Environment and Natural Resources – Mimaropa (DENR-Mimaropa) is investing resources and time to bring young people into the climate change advocacy. Public Affairs Office Chief Chona Zamora of the DENRMimaropa said they are touring major schools in the region to augment what highschool and college students know about the changing climate and its impact. “They (young people) can be agents of information,” said Zamora who is now in Puerto Princesa City (Palawan) along with a combined DENR-Philippine Information AgencyMimaropa team (with Regional Director Crisina Castillo personally leading the PIA-Mimaropa side), “hopefully to teach them ways to mitigate and adapt to the impacts of climate change.” Simple ways that young people can accomplish include preventing garbage from getting into rivers and other bodies of water, avoiding products that may contain chemicals that harms the Ozone Layer and managing the use of appliances and popular gadgets. Zamora likewise was proud of the young audiences in the campus tours held in Calapan City, Oriental Mindoro whom she described as “nearly advocates”, because of high awareness on climate change science. Aside from schools, Zamora added that they plan to bring the tour to city and municipal governments to include people from the barangays.|

Bukod sa Batangas City PNP at BPLO, dumalo rin sa 1st Fireworks and Pyrotechnics Regulatory Offices and Vendors Meeting sina Bureau of Fire Protection (BFP) Chief Romel Tradio at City Engineers Office representative Engr. Just be grateful to the Lord... HERE is a translation of Pope Francis' address this morning during the general audience in St. Peter's Square.  Dear Brothers and Sisters, In the previous catechesis we saw how the Lord continues to feed His flock through the ministry of Bishops, helped by presbyters and deacons. It is in them that Jesus renders Himself present, in the power of His Spirit, and continues to serve the Church, nourishing in her faith, hope and the witness of charity. Therefore, these ministries are a great gift of the Lord for every Christian community and for the whole Church, in as much as they are a living sign of His presence and His love. Today we want to ask ourselves: What is requested of these ministers of the Church, so that they can live their service in a genuine and fruitful way? In his “Pastoral Letters,” sent to his disciples Timothy and Titus, the Apostle Paul reflects with care on the figure of Bishops, presbyters and deacons. There is also the figure of the faithful, of the elderly, of the youth. He focuses on a description of every Christian in the Church. He underlines for the Bishops, priests and deacons that to which they are called, and the prerogatives that must be recognized in them, who are chosen and invested with these ministries. Now, it is emblematic how, together with the gifts inherent in the faith and in the spiritual life, that can’t be overlooked in that very life, some exquisitely human qualities are listed: hospitality, sobriety, patience, meekness, reliability and goodness of heart. I repeat:hospitality, sobriety, patience, meekness, reliability and goodness of heart. This is the alphabet, the basic grammar of every ministry! It should be the basic grammar of every Bishop, of every priest and of every deacon! Yes, because without this good and genuine predisposition to encounter, to know, to dialogue, to appreciate and relate with ones brethren in a respectful and sincere way, it is not possible to offer a truly joyous and reliable service and witness. There is, therefore, an underlying attitude that Paul recommends to his disciples and, consequently, to all those who are invested with the pastoral ministry, be they Bishops, priests or deacons. The Apostle exhorts to revive continually the gift that was received (cf. 1 Timothy 4:14; 2 Timothy 1:6). This means that the awareness must always be alive that one is not a Bishop, priest or deacon because one is more intelligent, good and better than others, but only because of a gift of love, a gift of God freely given, in the power of His Spirit, for the good of His people. This awareness is truly important and is a grace to pray for every day! In fact, a Pastor who is conscious that his ministry flows only from the mercy and heart of God will never be able to assume an authoritarian attitude, as if everyone was at his feet and the community was his property, his personal kingdom. The awareness that everything is gift, everything is grace, also helps a Pastor not to fall into the temptation to put himself at the center of attention and to be confident only in himself. They are the temptations of vanity, of pride, of sufficiency, of arrogance. Woe if a Bishop, a priest or a deacon thinks he knows everything, that he always has the right answer for everything, and is in need of no one. On the contrary, the awareness that he is first of all the object of the mercy and compassion of God should lead a minister of the Church to be always humble and understanding in dealing with others. Also, in the awareness of being called to protect courageously the deposit of faith (cf. 1 Timothy 6:20), he will listen to the people. He is conscious, in fact, of always having something to learn, also of those who can still be far from the faith and from the Church. With his own fellow Bishops, priests and deacons, all this should lead him to assume a new attitude, marked by sharing, co-responsibility and communion. Dear friends, we must always be grateful to the Lord, because in the person and the ministry of Bishops, priests and deacons He continues to guide and to form His Church, making her grow along the way of holiness. At the same time, we must continue to pray, so that the Pastors of our communities can be a living image of communion and love of God.|

General Alan Purisima, but this has done nothing to restore the public’s trust on the police chief and there are more alleged anomalies surfacing. If and when Senate President Drilon’s integrity is tarnished, more likely, it will bring down with him the image that the Aquino administration has been building that it has been undertaking so-called reforms for good governance. Did the Aquino administration not expect this when it unleashed Senator Trillanes on Vice President Binay? It should have learned its lesson when it ran after Senators Juan Ponce Enrile, Jinggoy Estrada and Bong Revilla. Senator Jinggoy Estrada got back at the administration by exposing the DAP and the “reward” lawmakers got for having former Chief Justice Renato Corona impeached. Corruption in the country’s political system is so systemic such that all government officials and politicians have their own skeletons in the closet. When one exposes the other, the other also has something to expose in return. And this culture of corruption begins in the electoral system. Those eyeing elective positions have to raise hundreds of millions and even billions of pesos to launch a competitive election campaign. How do you think they would recoup their expenses if they win? What would those who contributed to the campaign kitty of winning candidates ask for in return? Why do you think politicians run for office in the first place if not for power and oppor-tunities it provides for increasing their wealth? And the easiest way for elected government officials to do this is through the pork barrel and other discretionary funds because they have control over what projects to allot money to, where to put it up, and to whom to

No. 180284, Sept. 11, 2013).|

#AbolishPork NOW it’s the turn of Senate President Franklin Drilon to be investigated for the alleged overpricing of government projects, especially the Iloilo Convention Center. It could be remembered that it was Kabataan Party-list Rep. Terry Ridon who first brought to the public’s attention the alleged overpricing of the Iloilo Convention Center, the cost of which, per area, was higher than the Beijing Bird’s Nest, the main stadium built by the Chinese government for the staging of the Beijing Olympics. For that, Rep. Ridon earned the ire of Senate President Drilon, who, in a social gathering of lawmakers, shouted at Ridon “Jesus, what did I do to you?” Now the former provincial administrator of Iloilo Manuel Mejorada is saying that Iloilo City has become the “bird’s nest of corruption” because local government officials are under the protection of the third highest official of the land, referring to Senate President Drilon. He mentioned that a lot more Disbursement Acceleration Program-funded (DAP-funded) projects are likewise tainted with corruption. This has put the Aquino administration in a fix. How long and how far would it pursue the probe on the alleged corruption case of one of the main stalwarts of Aquino’s ruling Liberal Party? Surely, it knows that the longer the probe is pursued – much like what is has been doing to Vice President Binay – the bigger are the effects on the Liberal Party and the whole Aquino administration. The longer the probe goes, the more likely that the Filipino people would be able to see the truth and would be able to judge the official being investigated. No amount of assurances and vouching for the integrity of Senate President Drilon by President Aquino would be able to erase the public’s doubts. President Aquino has vouched for the integrity of Philippine National Police Chief Director

Hongkong media forum INFLIGHT WIFI -- Last Saturday night on my way home from Hongkong, I was worried while airborne at 38,000 feet on board PAL’s PR307 that I would miss my connecting flight from Manila to Davao to catch up with an event I did not want to miss. But PAL’s in-flight wifi eased the tension. I was getting periodic text messages from the ground that yes; PAL as usual would be late. Thanks to in-flight wifi! Cool! And thanks to PAL for being late as usual! (Hahaha). By the way, in fairness to PAL, it's mainly the congested air traffic at the antic NAIA that is causing all this!  MEDIA FORUM -- A few days ago, during the 2014 International Conference of the Asian Congress for Media and Communication held in the CITY UNIVERSITY OF HONGKONG, I shared my thoughts on the topic “Fostering the shift: from conflict reporting to peace journalism”. I got the feeling that we in the Philippines are way ahead in this regard, although security problems and peace challenges are commonly shared by many countries in the Asean region. Sharing experiences especially learning lessons from our own mistakes so others would not repeat them are always worth doing.  HONGKONG PROTEST -- The night outing after the forum brought us to the famous MONGKOK shopping-night market area in downtown Hongkong. Although I had been in that area in the past, this time we (Ariel Sebellino of the Phil. Press Institute and Prof. Joey Alagaran of Miriam College in Manila) did our own social investigation of sorts at the “barikada” area of the protesters there. The place was like a tent city at night, although quiet and subdued with protesters sprawling on mattresses or squatting and making miniature yellow umbrellas symbol of their struggle for reforms against Beijing. One high schooler sprawled on his mattress told me he had been there for 20 days and did not yet know when their mass protest actions would end. I saw uniformed policemen chatting at a corner while tourists and curious shoppers were milling around, listening to some demands of the demonstrators, although most were interested in the usual photo ops and “kodakan”. One hawker told me that contrary to what others said, business is more brisk because the protest activities, aside from being peaceful were attracting tourists. Interesting! Back to the media forum, I was glad I attended the biennial event of ACMC. There were interesting research outcome presentations that caught my attention -- and fancy.  ON- LINE DATING -- For example one break-away session dealt with digital media and the prevalence of “on-line dating”. One lonely soul can just click a site to find a suitable partner. Dr. Tony Chalkley of the Deaken University, Geelong in Australia prepared a paper entitled “ON LINE DATING: IS A DIGITAL KISS AND VIRTUAL WINK THE NEW WAY OF FINDING LOVE?” He postulated that this new way of finding one’s partner will “encourage you to reflect on your own values and expectations around the concept of “public” and “private” self. He said there are also indications that although many on-liners are not portraying their real selves through their blogs or postings, there are also many who are living “closet lives” in real lives who give or reveal their own true selves on line.  ON INDON TEXTING -- Two Indonesian researchers showed how modern day texting using the cell phone’s “short message services” or SMS not only corrupted the students’ English spelling. But significantly, the cultural trait of respect, deference to elders or superiors are lost in the process -- a clear erosion of long cherished Asian values. One study showed how even respect to classroom teachers or instructors suffered. Case in point: students usually send text messages to their classroom instructors explaining why they are absent or late from class or inquiring about assignments. Worse they end their messages usually with “CU” instead of “SEE YOU”, showing familiarity bordering on disrespect. It becomes worse when the teacher texts back: “CU too. Ty”! ( Hahaha! ) They found that the use of SMS changed Indonesian youth's language habit impacting on the change of politeness in Indon culture.  ON EXTRA-MARITAL AFFAIRS -- Two Filipino communications researchers (Chadwick Co Sy Su and Joeven R. Castro) presented a report entitled “Of women muting women and men getting away scot-free: extrarelational affairs and their depictions in recent Philippine mainstream cinema”. One of their findings is that there is now a resurgence of sexually charged films in Filipino cinema. They reported about their study of three recent popular movies that dealt with alluring mistresses, the suffering but forthright wives and the philandering husbands. They saw a pattern of women in extra-relational affairs (a.k.a. mistresses) portrayed as strong but dependent and usually are at a losing end and the inequitable sharing of the burden favoring the males; hyper sexuality is noted in the “subsequent partner” and women tend to “mute” their own kind: women. One of the findings being that media today still reinforces the inequities of the status quo.  CELEBRITY CANDIDATES -- A Jesuit researcher from Sri Lanka, Theodore Fernando, did a report on women celebrities in Sri Lanka getting elected during elections just cashing in on their popular status or as widows or daughters of dead politicians. His paper was entitled “Media Portrayal of Sri Lankan Women Celebrities in the Political Sphere”. He found that grieving widows or bereaved daughters of known assassinated politicians draw votes better than others not similarly situated. He also found in his research that actors or actresses try to re-invent themselves when they run for public office, changing their attires or manner of speaking or downplaying previous nudity and controversial issues of their past.

Taytay, Rizal cooperative THE Department of Trade and Industry (DTI) launched yesterday another shared service facility (SSD) for Lupang Arenda MultiPurpose Cooperative (LAMCO) in Barangay Sta. Ana, Taytay, Rizal. The P424,000-worth of tools, equipment and machines consisting of benders, drills, grinders, cutters, and arc and gas welders, will boost output of its metal fabrication center that produces water meter protectors and plumbing fixtures to be supplied to major water utilities in Metro Manila and Laguna. In 2012, LAMCO, with close to 400 direct members, hit P1.65-million in revenues. With the reinforced production facility, the

cooperative aims to participate in government contracts aside from eyeing to supply other water utilities. Given its current market potential, it projects to earn P2.8-million and will employ 75 men and women during the first year. DTI Regional Director Marilou Quinco-Toledo said that the SSF Project is a big push for the development of cooperatives and the micro, small and medium enterprises through mechanization or industrialization. LAMCO chairperson Leticia Agnas acknowledged that the concern and efforts of government to alleviate poverty are felt by the people through projects that promotes inclusive growth.|

#AbolishPork contract it to? This is why government officials, up to President Aquino, are defending the pork barrel system to the hilt. This is also why the campaign to abolish the pork barrel system is an important part of the fight against graft and corruption. Currently, this campaign is being buried by the surge of issues competing over the

headlines of media agencies. It is imperative on the Filipino people to pursue it because even though the abolition of the pork barrel system will not eradicate corruption, without it, it will be more difficult for politicians to pocket taxpayers’ money. So let’s pursue the campaign to #AbolishPork.|

Although admitting that the level of women participation in politics in Russia is still wanting, the fact that Russian women are now making waves in the financial and business fields augers well for the future. Prof. Elise briefly talked about how she was

made to start literally from scratch when she migrated to the US to start a new life -leaving behind in Russia her advanced studies and credentials and papers. She recalled that while at the border on her way out of Russia, she was made to make a choice, the Russian immigration officer telling her when she insisted on bringing along her papers and credentials that were work of a lifetime: “Take that door (out) or your credentials.” She chose the door to freedom, without looking back. She is now an accomplished communications educator in the US. The rest is history. Dr. Azman Azwan Azmawati , ACMC head did a paper on women and gender issues. THE news media should be more sensitive when it comes to reporting on children and children’s issues. Responsible journalists should get the stories on children out without doing them harm.
