There are few holiday season traditions we love more, especially in Lubbock than attending the live production of The Nutcracker! And being without it this year is yet another one of the crueler by-products of the pandemic. The Sugar Plum Fairy. The gorgeous costumes and elaborate sets. The live performance of Tchaikovsky’s score by the Lubbock Symphony Orchestra. The youngest dancers, soldiers and mice; the more accomplished dancers, whom repeat audience members watch as they grow up. We know those dancers are missing it just as much as we do. In lieu of the typical Nutcracker ballet experiences, this year we are gathering as a virtual community to enjoy the home cinema production of The Nutcracker with our families and friends. This year Ballet Lubbock has worked hard to produce a Nutcracker special that brings a combination of comedic and heartwarming narration and some of Ballet Lubbock’s historical performances to the big screen. Whether you are gathering as an annual holiday tradition or watching for the first time, we hope that this year’s production will help families enjoy the music, dance, and magical experience that the Nutcracker represents. These are unprecedented times and nonprofit arts organizations like Ballet Lubbock have been particularly hard hit. While we have navigated times of crisis, we have not experienced the unknown timing of what comes next. What we do know is that Ballet Lubbock remains steadfast in our commitment to you to provide a place of premier dance training, performances, and outreach. We also look to the future when we can welcome our visiting dancers, musicians, and patrons to Ballet Lubbock’s new home, the Buddy Holly Hall of Performing Arts and Sciences. We are thankful this season that we are able to pursue the vision of expanded, accessible instructional space, a centralized location in our arts district, and continued growth of our outreach and inclusion programs to provide dance to all. None of our plans, progress, or performances would be possible without the tremendous support of our sponsors and community partners. We thank you sincerely for your continued involvement and for championing our mission through donations, volunteerism, and applause. Your kindness and generosity are making an impact. We continue to grow and serve more each year thanks to your contributions and support. In this era of striking uncertainty, we are stronger than ever with your support.
Thank you for supporting Ballet Lubbock and arts in the South Plains for fifty years. Thank you for making The Nutcracker so special and for Lara Davis including us in your holiday traditions. Most of all, thank you for igniting Director of Community Engagement a love of dance and a passion for the arts- the best is truly yet to be. Suzanne Aker Founder

The Nutcracker Story The Nutcracker ballet is based upon the translation of E.T.A. Hoffman’s book, The Nutcracker and the Mouse King. In 1891, Marius Petipa, the legendary ballet master of the Russian Kirov Ballet, commissioned the famous composer, Pyotr Tchaikovsky, to write a score for the ballet based on the fairy tale. Petipa began the choreography, but soon fell ill. Thus, the rest of the choreography was entrusted to his assistant, Lev Ivanov. The Nutcracker debuted on December 17, 1892 at the Maryinsky Theatre in St. Petersburg, Russia. It was not until 1954 that the Russian dancer/choreographer and founder of New York City Ballet, George Balanchine, created a full-length Nutcracker and premiered it in the United States on the American Ballet Theatre. To this day, there are several different versions being performed in the United States every December, but all are centered around the story of a little girl and the magical Kingdom of the Sweets. Prelude: Village Scene It is Christmas Eve, and the village is full of vendors selling vegetables, baked goods, and flowers. The children’s choir sings carols as people bustle their way to various Christmas celebrations. Meanwhile, Herr Drosselmeyer and his nephew are putting finishing touches on toys before hurrying to the von Stahlbaums’ Christmas party. Act I, Scene I: The Christmas Party Herr von Stahlbaum and his wife welcome all of their guests. Drosselmeyer and the nephew arrive and surprise the children with toys. Drosselmeyer presents life-like mechanical dolls that perform for the guests. He gives Clara her own special doll, a handsome nutcracker. In a fit of jealousy, Clara’s brother Fritz rips the doll away from Clara and breaks it. Drosselmeyer comforts Clara, and she dances a lullaby for her nutcracker. After the final dance, all of the guests leave the party and Drosselmeyer and the nephew say goodnight. Act I, Scene 2: The Battle Scene At midnight, Clara sneaks back downstairs after the guests have left. She sees an incredible sight—mice and rats everywhere! The Rat King appears and tells his rats to attack Clara. Suddenly, Clara’s nutcracker comes to life and calls his soldiers to battle. Clara helps the Nutcracker Soldier defeat the Mouse Queen and his army of rats. She is amazed to see her Nutcracker Soldier transform into a prince! The Prince thanks Clara for saving his life and tells her he will take her to his magical kingdom. They meet the Snow Queen and King and travel through the Snow Kingdom watching the Snow Maidens dance. Act II: The Kingdom of the Sweets The Nutcracker Prince presents Clara to all of his subjects. The beautiful Sugar Plum Fairy arrives and she tells everyone to dance for Clara. The celebration ends and Clara is back in her living room. She rushes outside to see if it was real or a dream. Drosselmeyer’s nephew runs up to Clara. Clara is surprised to see how much he looks like the Prince in her wonderful dream…or was it real all along?
