President’s Message Board of Directors
On behalf of the Ballet Lubbock Board of Directors and staff, it is my pleasure to welcome you to the 2018 production of The Nutcracker! We hope you will fall in love with the magic, beauty, and excitement of The Nutcracker just as we have.
Kathleen Burrell President Amanda Kuhn Immediate Past-President Chris Griffith Vice President Nathaniel Wright Treasurer Helen Liggett Secretary Haley Brooks Sofia Davila LaDonna Elliot Stephen Faulk Ryan Henry Shyrle Hill Somer Jaynes Roger Karr Wyatt Leavell Jo Moore John Salter Scott Sharp Sarah Skelton Diana St. Clair Lauren Sullivan
You spread cheer and light throughout the Civic Center and the city, making this a heartwarming experience for generations past, present, and future. Thank you for making The Nutcracker so special, and for including us in your holiday traditions. We are humbled and honored by your presence.
Staff Nicholas Dragga Executive Director Yvonne Racz Key Artistic Director Janie Bush Production Manager Helen Hunter Development & Marketing Manager Meg Davis Business Manager Marcos Vasquez Director of Community Outreach Suzanne Aker Founder
Our favorite part of The Nutcracker experience, however, is the community - a community that comes together in a remarkable shared experience that speaks to the very heart of Lubbock. We are beyond thankful for the dancers and production crew, the parents and volunteers, the business leaders and community partners, but you – you are critical to The Nutcracker as a Lubbock holiday tradition. We could not do it without you, nor would we want to!
It is in the spirit of community that Ballet Lubbock has seen our greatest successes – both on and off the stage. 2018 has brought growth and improvement in our current community initiatives and partnerships in 10 local elementary schools, and increased our outreach in hospitals at Covenant Children’s Hospital and University Medical Center. We have also seen Buddy Holly Hall’s construction developing each and every day thanks to our partnership with LEPAA. We are thankful this season that we are able to pursue the vision of expanded, accessible instructional space and a more centralized location, which will enable us to serve a larger and more inclusive student base. None of our plans, progress, or performances would be possible without the partnership of our patrons and sponsors. We thank you sincerely for your continued involvement and for championing our mission through donations, volunteerism, and applause. Thank you for supporting Ballet Lubbock and arts in the South Plains. Enjoy this celebration of light and community – made possible by you! From our family to yours, enjoy the show!

Nicholas regularly blogs for the Americans for the Arts Artsblog, and is a member of the Emerging Leaders Council, a nationally elected working advisory body to Americans for the Arts that assists in developing programs and resources to promote professional development and networking opportunities for emerging arts professionals nationwide. The Nutcracker Story The Nutcracker ballet is based upon the translation of E.T.A. Hoffman’s book, The Nutcracker and the Mouse King. In 1891, Marius Petipa, the legendary ballet master of the Russian Kirov Ballet, commissioned the famous composer, Pyotr Tchaikovsky, to write a score for the ballet based on the fairy tale. Petipa began the choreography, but soon fell ill. Thus, the rest of the choreography was entrusted to his assistant, Lev Ivanov. The Nutcracker debuted on December 17, 1892 at the Maryinsky Theatre in St. Petersburg, Russia. It was not until 1954 that the Russian dancer/choreographer and founder of New York City Ballet, George Balanchine, created a full-length Nutcracker and premiered it in the United States on the American Ballet Theatre. To this day, there are several different versions being performed in the United States every December, but all are centered around the story of a little girl and the magical Kingdom of the Sweets. Prelude: Village Scene It is Christmas Eve and the village is full of vendors selling cookies, pastries, and flowers. The children’s choir sings carols as people bustle their way to various Christmas parties. Meanwhile, Drosselmeyer and his nephew are making last-minute touches on toys before hurrying to the Stahlbaums’ Christmas Party. Act I, Scene I: The Christmas Party Herr von Stahlbaum and his wife welcome all of their guests. Drosselmeyer and the nephew arrive and surprise the children with toys. Drosselmeyer presents life-like mechanical dolls that perform for the guests. He gives Clara her own special doll, a handsome nutcracker. In a fit of jealousy, Clara’s brother Fritz rips the doll away from Clara and breaks it. Drosselmeyer comforts Clara, and she dances a lullaby for her nutcracker. After the final dance, all of the guests leave the party and Drosselmeyer tells Clara he will take the broken nutcracker back to the shop to fix. Act I, Scene 2: The Battle Scene At midnight, Clara sneaks back downstairs after the guests have left. She sees an incredible sight—mice and rats everywhere! The mighty Mouse Queen appears and tells her rats to attack Clara. Suddenly, Clara’s nutcracker comes to life and calls his soldiers to battle. Clara helps the Nutcracker Soldier defeat the Mouse Queen and her army of rats. She is amazed to see her Nutcracker Soldier transform into a handsome prince! The Prince thanks Clara for saving his life and tells her he will take her to his magical kingdom. They meet the Snow Queen and King and travel through the Snow Kingdom watching the Snow Maidens dance. Act II: The Kingdom of the Sweets The Nutcracker Prince presents Clara to all of his subjects. The beautiful Sugar Plum Fairy arrives and she tells everyone to dance for Clara. The celebration ends and Clara is back in her living room. She rushes outside to see if it was real or a dream. Drosselmeyer’s nephew runs up to Clara to return the fixed Nutcracker. Clara is surprised to see how much he looks like the Prince in her wonderful dream…or was it real all along?
