We stayed connected through our screens. You watched The Nutcracker on television. We streamed other ballets into your homes. We took you behind the scenes with a documentary series. We explored new ways to engage. Yet, for all the digital entertainment we provided, we yearned to be on stage—to present ballet with all the energy that only live theater affords. There is no substitute for witnessing the beauty and athleticism of dancers amidst audiences who share the electricity that comes from live performances. Charged with kinetic energy, this will be a season unlike any other. Witness the renaissance of Ballet West.
We are Back to Live! 1

THE WORLD’S MOST FAMOUS LOVE STORY! After 25 years, Michael Smuin’s Romeo and Juliet makes a glorious return to Ballet West! Sweeping and energetic, Smuin’s version captures William Shakespeare’s humor, drama, and heartache. It is carried by Sergei Prokofiev’s dramatic score that tells the Bard’s story about two starcrossed lovers, caught in their families’ feuds.

WITH GLASS PIECES BACK BY POPULAR DEMAND! The day after Nicolo Fonte’s Carmina Burana closed in 2017, patrons were asking when Ballet West would stage it again. With an immense choir suspended over the ferocious choreography on stage, the reviews were outstanding: “Beautiful, gripping, and dynamic,” declared The Salt Lake Tribune. The program will open with Jerome Robbins’ Glass Pieces, a showcase of the great choreographer’s expansive scope and streamlined style. The ballet captures the pulsating heartbeat of metropolitan life with its charged choreography, concluding in a finale that propels the corps de ballet across the stage at an electrifying pace.

WITNESS THE FUTURE. Experience the best of today’s new ballets that will become tomorrow’s favorites. Once again, audiences will see dancers and choreographers exploring their art form in intriguing and cutting-edge new creations. This year, choreographers from within Ballet West will create new works alongside Scottish Ballet’s Resident Choreographer Sophie Laplane, whose ballets have been seen around the world and called “gorgeously humanistic” by The Telegraph.

DURING A DIFFICULT YEAR FOR DANCE, ACADEMY INNOVATES TO CONTINUE TRAINING With careful planning and under extreme caution, the Ballet West Academy continued teaching throughout the year. First virtually, but quickly in-person with reduced class sizes for physical distancing and with masks required. There were even a number of performances with small audiences, including at the Loveland Living Planet Aquarium, and The Glass Slipper at the Capitol Theatre. In December, artistic staff also re-choreographed Act I of The Nutcracker in order to allow the families of the casts to come see their little dancers on stage!

TOUR DE FORCE:
ACADEMY WELCOMES NEW DIRECTOR
This year, the Academy was thrilled to announce the hiring of Evelyn Cisneros-Legate as the Director of the school.
EVELYN CISNEROS-LEGATE,
DIRECTOR OF THE FREDERICK QUINNEY LAWSON BALLET WEST ACADEMY
While at the San Francisco Ballet, Cisneros-Legate was the first Mexican-American to be elevated to a principal dancer role in the United States. She soon earned the title of the company’s prima-ballerina and became an international star. After retiring from dance, Cisneros-Legate was named one of the “100 Influentials” by Hispanic Business and the Huffington Post called her one of the “17 ballet icons who are changing the face of dance today.” She has received numerous awards for her community activism, artistic achievements, and is a role model to many. Today, Cisneros-Legate brings her expertise to the Ballet West Academy, where she inspires and motivates the young dancers at the institution’s four locations. Her goal is to inspire children of all ages to become the truest, most powerful individual they can be.

BALLET WEST
IN THE COMMUNITY Teaching dance to incarcerated women, giving free performances to children with special needs, stretching and laughing with senior citizens—Ballet West’s education and outreach programs bring magic to communities throughout Utah. Funded by generous foundations, corporations, individuals, and government agencies, these programs allow community members to experience live ballet regardless of financial or geographic barriers.
BALLET WEST FOR CHILDREN
Ballet West II performs at elementary schools across the state, in over 22 districts—reaching more than 51,000 students every year.
FIRST LOOK
Students gain a deeper understanding of a production through pre-presentation activities and intermission discussions.
FORWARD STEPS
Healthy modes of self-expression are taught in dance classes offered at correctional facilities and treatment centers across Utah.
SENIOR STEPS
MOVEMENT MENTOR
I CAN DO
STUDENT IN-THEATER PRESENTATIONS
Guided ballet classes held at senior centers stimulate both the body and the mind. This program moved online this year, and reached more than 20,000 users around the world!
This six-month residency offered at Wasatch Front schools teaches fifthgrade students both the discipline and joy of dancing. Last year, this program reached 2,212 students in six districts and five charter schools.
Students with special needs receive weekly in-school dance and movement instruction, with student leaders serving as mentors.
Normally, more than 10,000 students attend a free production every year at the Janet Quinney Lawson Capitol Theatre.
Many of the education and community outreach programs looked different in the last year. By quickly pivoting and innovating, students were able to enjoy digital presentations, I CAN DO was taught over Zoom to thousands of children, and teachers enjoyed physically distanced First Look performances.
