About Ballet West From Balanchine to Bournonville, and Petipa to Tharp, Ballet West boasts a rich and varied repertoire, elegant and versatile artists, and an American style and legacy that is as dynamic, expansive, and unexpected as the Rocky Mountain region it represents. Ballet West has toured the world several times over, presenting the very best in American classical ballet. Ballet West was established in Salt Lake City in 1963. Willam F. Christensen was the company’s first artistic director, co-founding the company together with Utah’s “First Lady of the Arts,” Glenn Walker Wallace. In 1951, Christensen had established the first ballet department in an American university at The University of Utah, and with the tireless assistance of Mrs. Enid Cosgriff, this program grew into the Utah Civic Ballet, Ballet West’s first incarnation. But this was not the first ballet company Willam Christensen founded. Along with his brothers, Lew and Harold, Christensen made history by establishing the oldest ballet company in the western United States, the San Francisco Ballet. There, he went on to create the first full-length American productions of Coppélia, Swan Lake, and his evergreen production of The Nutcracker, which remains in Ballet West’s repertoire to this day. With 36 company members, 16 second company members, and a thriving academy that trains dancers of all ages, many of whom have gone on to professional careers with Ballet West and companies around the world, Ballet West ranks among the top professional ballet companies in America. Since its inception, the Company has had five artistic directors—its founder Willam Christensen, Bruce Marks, John Hart, Jonas Kage, and currently Adam Sklute, each of whom has helped to build Ballet West’s unique and expansive profile. For more than 50 years, Willam Christensen and Ballet West have developed and influenced innumerable great artists in the ballet world. Some notable figures include Bart Cook, Finis Jhung, Jay Jolley, Victoria Morgan, Tomm Ruud, Michael Smuin, Richard Tanner, and Kent Stowell. With an eclectic and ever expanding outlook, Ballet West is truly an American pioneer in the world of dance.

From the Artistic Director and Executive Director Welcome to Ballet West’s Park City performance at the George S. and Delores Doré Eccles Center Theater. This program is the first return to Park City by our main Ballet West company since 2017, and only our third main company performance here in Park City in fifteen years. It is also thrillingly our first main company tour outside of Salt Lake City since February of 2020, when we all had to pull back from regular live theater performances. The works on display tonight, showcase the breadth and range of Ballet West’s repertoire and artists. Known for our big classic story ballets, Ballet West also has a deep commitment to new work and developing new choreographic voices for ballet. The ballets on this program were uniquely commissioned by three very individual choreographers. We open with The Thing with Feathers, an exciting collaboration between emerging choreographer and Ballet West Principal Artist Emily Adams, and composer Katy Jarzebowski. Katy is an alumnae fellow of The Sundance Institute Film Music Program. Together they co-conceived of this work that takes its inspiration from the Emily Dickenson poem Hope is the Thing with Feathers. The ballet propels us through a world of darkness and separation, and into a culmination of joy. In abstract ways it addresses so many of the feelings we as humans have felt over the past year and a half, but also the ultimate triumph of hope. Notice how the leading couple does not even touch until three quarters of a way through the ballet and light begins to envelope the stage. This ballet also marks the first time Ballet West has collaborated with the Sundance Institute and we hope it will be the beginning of an on-going working relationship. Next on the program is Matthew Neenan’s The Solo Year. Matthew is an elegant and fascinating voice in American dance today. He is the co-founder of the contemporary ballet company Ballet X, and has choreographed for companies around the world. In 2014, he created The Sixth Beauty for Ballet West, which received wonderful notice both here in Utah BALLET WEST COMES TO PARK CITY AUGUST 5, 2021

and in New York City on our tour to The Joyce Theater. This new creation is a look at relationships and feelings through a baroque prism. Filled with texture and filigree, and modulating between highly stylized classical form and nuanced modern movement, Matthew also explores the emotional challenges of this past year with this stunning work for two quartets of dancers who intricately weave a tapestry through dance. Finally, we present the main company premiere of world-renowned choreographer Nicolo Fonte’s dynamic Piece of My Heart set to the music of Janice Joplin. Nicolo has been Ballet West’s resident choreographer since 2012. He has since created numerous crowd-pleasing works ranging from intimate and introspective, to massive in scope such as his Rite of Spring to the Stravinsky score (where it rained on stage at the end), and his monumental Carmina Burana which we will be reviving this coming April of 2022. In 2016, Nicolo created Piece of My Heart on Ballet West II to allow the dancers to develop in his loose limbed and extended style of movement. The work proved so popular that we have moved it to the main company repertoire as well. Many of those second company dancers have also moved up to Ballet West and are now in this company cast of Piece of my Heart. Fun, quirky, chic, and surprisingly moving, Nicolo finds unexpected dimension in Joplin’s driving iconic music. Returning to the Eccles Center Theater this evening will be the start of a regular presence by Ballet West in Park City going forward. Along with the Peggy Bergmann Park City campus of the Frederick Quinney Lawson Ballet West Academy, Ballet West is committed to bringing residents of the greater Park City area the finest in professional dance performance and dance instruction. We look forward to seeing you when we return to the Eccles. A special thank you to the Eccles Theater team and the Park City School Board for welcoming us to their space. Thank you for joining us and enjoy the performance!

KATY JARZEBOWSKI

Driven by a love of the bold and unexpected, her work balances a strong background in string and orchestral writing with elements of sound design, electronics, and surprising instrumentations. She has scored numerous films and documentaries, including Lara Gallagher’s Clementine, which premiered at the Tribeca Film Festival and was released as a soundtrack by Infinite Companion in 2021. Katy graduated from Yale University and earned a Masters in Music at NYU, where she studied with Julia Wolfe. She is an avid traveler and polyglot, and has studied abroad both in Paris and Italy, where she researched the work of Nino Rota and Ennio Morricone under an ASCAP fellowship. In 2015, she participated as an artist fellow with The Backstory Group for their maiden trip to Israel. Katy is forever grateful to her parents for their fanatic support and encouragement, her grandparents for sharing their love of music, and her partner, Pete, ‘for the sake of a smile’... She wishes to wholeheartedly thank Ballet West and Peter Golub of the Sundance Institute for this opportunity, and choreographer Emily Adams for her passion, talent, and trust.

Profiles NICOLO FONTE

Choreographer, Piece of My Heart Choreographer Nicolo Fonte has created over 50 new works for dance companies spanning the globe, garnering praise and generating excitement for his daring and theatrical approach to dance. In Hidden Seconds, one of three ballets Fonte created for Nacho Duato’s Compañia Nacional de Danza, while he was still a dancer with the company, was hailed as a breakthrough work of great impact with the poetic vision of a mature artist. Since then, companies such as The Australian Ballet, Pennsylvania Ballet, and The Dutch National Ballet, among many others, all have works of his in their repertoire. Whether made to Ravel’s brash Bolero or the quiet intricacy of a Bach violin piece, Fonte ballets have common ground: “The choreography is inventive, creating expressive original shapes built on an undercurrent of implicit human relationships” (Foyer/ Dance Europe). “What impresses the most is that his choreography is obviously the result of a personal reflection - distinctly and unmistakably Fonte, proof of a rare quality” (Michel Odin/Danse). Well-known to Salt Lake City audiences for a stunning roster of works including Bolero, Presto, Fox on the Doorstep, The Rite of Spring, and Carmina Burana, Fonte is recognized throughout the world as a choreographer equally comfortable with classical and contemporary dance forms. Mr. Fonte has been the Resident Choreographer for Ballet West since the 2012/2013 season. He also became Resident Choreographer at Oregon Ballet Theatre beginning with the 2016/2017 season.
