DOWNTOWN CROWD | JUNE 2023

For many of us, Memorial Day weekend serves as the unofficial start of summer. Classes are out, the temperature is steadily on rise and don’t event get me started on the humidity! Although summer doesn’t officially kick off until June 21, here along the Gulf Coast, it seems like it’s already been summertime for months. So, to help you conquer the dog days of summer, we’ve brought you the scoop on some of our favorite local frosty treats. From dreamy gelatos and sorberts to colorful snow cones and ice cream flavors galore, you’re sure to find a tasty treat to cool you off at one of these local sweet stops.

We also had a chance to catch up with two local vintage vendors to learn about the new pop-up shop they’re opening up this month in downtown Pensacola. These two popular vintage shops have combined forces (and their fabulous styles) to bring a new shopping experience to the downtown streets. Be sure to check out the story on page 8.

This month’s issue also includes details on the return of the Navy training tall ship, Juan Sebastian el Cano, to the Port of Pensacola. It’s pretty impressive and I highly recommend going to check it out. We have also brought you details on the return of this year’s PensaPride LBGTQ+ celebration and a roundup of some of the summer’s hottest reads for you to dive into this summer. Enjoy!

Until next time, Cheers!

5 Question s With Creatives Morgan Cooper

Morgan Cooper is an LGBTQ+ artist who is new to the Pensacola arts scene. As a charcoal and watercolor artist who dabbles in photography, Morgan captures a variety of subjects in her works. Some of her work depicts popular pop culture icons like horror film favorite Michael Myers and the beloved Baby Yoda, while other times, she takes photos capturing the natural beauty of our gorgeous beaches. Morgan has attended a variety of local arts markets throughout town. You can find her work on her Instagram page, @cat colony studio, where she also takes commissions. While she has slowed down on participating in markets due to pursuing her Bachelor of Fine Arts degree, Morgan hopes to return to vending locally in the near future.

Tell me a little bit about yourself and your professional background.

I grew up a military brat; I was born in Georgia, but moved all over the country until we ended up in Navarre, FL, where I attended Navarre High School. After graduating, I moved to Tallahassee to attend the Aveda Institute for Cosmetology. I graduated top of my class, but after a year or so in the field of cosmetology, I realized it wasn’t my passion. I moved back to Navarre and have had many different jobs from working at Michaels, the USPS and now making parachutes for the government. Right now, I am in school and am working toward my Bachelor of Fine Arts degree.

How long have you been interested in drawing and painting?

I have always loved art—it was my favorite hobby, my favorite class and I always

collected any and every artistic thing I could get my hands on. I really clung to art after my mom passed away when I was six. I was going into first grade and the passing of my mom made me very shy. I refused to talk to other kids and I refused to talk to my teacher. It got to the point that every week they would bring in people that would try and get me to talk and help me with the passing of my mom. They didn’t have too much luck, I was very stubborn—that was until they brought me my own bag filled with paper, markers, crayons, colored pencils, paints, paintbrushes, etc. It really opened the door for me and eventually I started to talk. I would draw as I talked to them.

Tell me a little bit about the different types of pieces you create. What are your favorite subjects to showcase in your work?

I try to create a variety of pieces. I like to test myself and see what I can do. I

have dabbled in portraits; I’m not the best at portraits, but I find them very fun. I also love to depict weird stuff like ghosts doing things like chores. I would love to get into more impactful art—really dig in and create pieces that have deeper meanings that make you think. As for my favorite subjects to capture, I really go through phases, especially during different seasons. I love taking close-up pictures of waves crashing and catching the movement of clouds. I enjoy painting ghosts, painting my pets or family pets, popular characters and animals in general. Can you take me through your creative process and describe what goes into creating one of your pieces?

I would say the vast majority of my creative process comes in moments. I’ll get an idea and establish the beginning stages of it and I will keep coming back to it just so I can take a moment and come back with

“fresh eyes.” Sometimes that really helps my brain figure out the next steps I want to take. Of course, I am always listening to music, I very rarely paint in a “serious” manner—I want my art to reflect me and I want it to be fun and invoke happiness.

Is there anything else you’d like to add, or that you’d like readers to know that I might not have asked?

I’m so honored to be a featured artist, especially for the pride-focused issue. I would like to add that if you have been wanting to try art, but get frustrated that you aren’t good enough, or that you “aren’t an artist,” don’t let that stop you. Go out and get messy, try and try again. Art is an amazing outlet, and you can be an artist no matter your skill level or experience.

Two popular pensacola vinTage sellers are Teaming up To form a new vinTage shop–rocke T To saTurn vinTage. Vanna Smith, owner of Saturn Collection Vintage, and Valorie Taylor, owner of Rocket Anyway Vintage, are taking both their businesses and their friendship to a new level by opening up a pop-up shop, fittingly named Rocket to Saturn Vintage, for the downtown crowd.

8 | downtowncrowd.com

Smith and Taylor are longtime fans of vintage and have years of experience curating and selling vintage clothing, accessories, and homeware. “I grew up visiting Years Ago-Go Vintage in West Pensacola in the 90s and began reselling vintage clothing in 2000 on eBay,” Smith explained. “I opened a booth at Miles Antique Mall and gave my shop the name it has now in 2017.”

Though not a Pensacola native, Taylor has been selling vintage around town since her move many years ago. “I moved to Pensacola six years ago. I have been reselling on Etsy since 2010 and had 2 vintage booths in Rhode Island, so I opened a few booths in Pensacola.”

In recent times, the two have become known throughout the Pensacola community for selling beautiful and bright clothing at vintage popups and markets throughout the city. Both Saturn Collection and Rocket Anyway Vintage also have booths in Bo’s Local Finds on N 9th Avenue.

In an attempt to grab the attention of the downtown crowd, the duo decided to team up and try out a pop-up shop at One Palafox Place. Smith and Taylor feel that the location is the perfect spot to try out a pop-up shop.

“While the space is petite, it could not be in a better location. We are so excited to be part of the ecosystem of One Palafox Place and downtown Pensacola,” Smith said. “We had been looking for a permanent location to possibly open our own standalone shop for nearly six months. We happened to see that the unit at One Palafox Place was for lease while Valorie was vending at a market hosted by The Nest General Store. Valorie asked for the opportunity of a short-term lease over the summer and they agreed to give it a try with Rocket to Saturn!”

Taylor added that the two are “so grateful that One Palafox Place is giving us this opportunity.”

Collaborating on this new pop-up shop is not the first time that the duo has worked together, though. From September 2022 to March of this year, Smith and Taylor ran Velocity Market, an outdoor vintage and art market held on the third Saturday of the month outside of Bo’s Local Finds. The pair’s success with this market and

their shared goals prompted them with the idea of teaming up to create something new; thus, Rocket to Saturn Vintage was born.

“Vanna and I work together so well during events and hosting Velocity Market, so it makes total sense to open a shop together,” Taylor said.

“We share the same goals; to save preloved clothing from the landfill while giving Pensacola’s funky people the opportunity to wear something unique that can’t be found at the mall,” Smith added.

Rocket to Saturn Vintage will host its grand opening on June 3. The pop-up shop will be located at 11 Palafox Place, Suite F inside the breezeway next to The Nest. The shop will be open Tuesday through Sunday from 11 am to 7 pm, with potential changes to accommodate for holidays and events. Rocket to Saturn Vintage will be open in this downtown location until at least August 31. If the shop does well, Rocket to Saturn Vintage may become a more permanent member of the downtown community.

In addition to their new pop-up shop, the duo will still be running all of their other vintage ventures. Taylor’s Rocket Anyway booth at Oooodles Antiques and her booths at Bo’s Local Finds will still be open and updated regularly with fresh vintage pieces. Smith’s booth at Bo’s Local Finds will also be maintained as usual, as well as both of the pair’s Etsy shops. They also have plans to bring back Velocity Market in the fall.

To stay up to date with Rocket Anyway Vintage, check out @rocketanywayvintage on Instagram, and to stay updated with Saturn Collection Vintage, visit @saturncollection on Instagram. For grand opening details and updates on the duo’s pop-up shop, follow @rocket.to.saturn. vintage on Instagram.

Y’all Means All PensaPride Returns for 2023 LGBTQIA+ Celebration

June marks the beginning of Pride month, a time of celebration, community and love. As the month continues, LGBTQ+ Pensacolians will bring the Pride party from the beach to the streets of East Hill in Pensacola. For its third consecutive year, the annual PensaPride event will return for a colorful celebration on June 24 at Cordova Square.

Held annually, this local Pride event focuses on strengthening and supporting the LGBTQ+ community in Pensacola. Each year in June, the day-long arts and culture festival is hosted during Pride month to bring together members of our local LBGTQ+ community. The goal of this family-friendly event is to celebrate and uplift Pensacola’s queer community by featuring a variety of local LGBTQ+ vendors, artists, musicians and more. Held at Cordova Square located at 12th Ave. and Gonzalez St. in East Hill, the park will be filled with members of the community and allies supporting queer love and equality.

In 2021, the PensaPride event was co-created by local LGBTQ+ nonprofit, Strive, and the ever-popular Pensacola Arts Market. After discussing the need to bring an LBGTQ+-specific artsfocused event to Pensacola for Pride month, the two organizations decided to partner to host their first arts-focused event and celebration that supports the local LGBTQ+ community.

“Our mission is to normalize the inclusion, in an uplifting and encouraging environment, of LGBTQIA+ people in all marginalized groups; especially those with intersections of race, gender, and people with disabilities,” Marri Salt, local artist and owner of Pensacola Arts Market, said. “We value the free and open expression of all LGBTQIA+ people as their authentic selves in our community.”

16 | downtowncrowd.com

The festival is a safe space for queer individuals to gather, express themselves creatively and have fun. Since PensaPride strives to be inclusive to everyone, this will be a sober and alcohol-free event. There will be plenty of entertainment provided at the event, including live music, DJs and other fun performances to watch.

“Guests can expect to have a fun day in the park with their community, enjoy local performers, singer-songwriters, DJs and more. There will be arts and crafts for all ages. There will be an acoustic stage for folks to chill, as well as interactive art stations,” Salt said.

PensaPride will also host a large variety of queer-run and queer-friendly vendors and exhibitors to check out. The many vendors will be selling everything from food, skincare and art to clothing, plants and jewelry.

“We will have over 100 exhibitors including community organizations, local artisans, vintage boutiques, plant boutiques, Melt food truck, Sneaky Tiki Shaved Ice, Moody Mocha, and more,” Salt explained.

While PensaPride is a fun and celebratory event, it also recognizes the hardships that queer individuals go through. To help further support members of the community, several LGBTQ+-focused organizations and groups will also be in attendance, with some offering resources for queer individuals to get the support they may need.

The third annual PensaPride celebration will be held Saturday, June 24, from 10 am to 4 pm at Cordova Square, located at 1101 N. 12th Avenue in Pensacola. For more information on the event, visit @PensaPride on Facebook or Instagram.

We value the free and open expression of all LGBTQIA+ people as their authentic selves in our community.”

Juan Sebastián de Elcano

Returns to Port of Pensacola

As summer weather approaches and pensacolians begin returning to the beaches and parks to bask in the sunlight, so too does a local favorite event make its return for the ninth time. The Navy training tall ship Juan Sebastián de Elcano is underway to the Port of Pensacola—Commendencia Street Slip. From May 29 to June 3, locals and tourists alike will have the opportunity to visit this historic ship. This visit will coincide with Fiesta Pensacola festivities, which include free-to-the-public ship tours.

“This is a very unique opportunity for Pensacola in that the rich history of the ship celebrates and reinforces the heritage of Pensacola and our Spanish history,” CAPT Daniel McCort USN (ret) and former President of the Pensacola Navy League said.

Philip “Lipo” Davis, the Honorary Consul from Spain in Pensacola, having succeeded the position from his mother, Dame Maria Davis, will spearhead the return of the Elcano to Pensacola. The world-famous Elcano has been repeatedly visiting Pensacola since 1959 to celebrate the city’s rich Spanish history.

Commanded by Captain Manuel García Ruiz, The Elcano is a four-masted topsail schooner and is one of the oldest tall ships sailing today. Built and launched in 1927, The Elcano was named after the Spanish explorer who completed Ferdinand Magellan’s first-ever circumnavigation of the earth from 1519 to 1522. In the last 100 years, the ship has gone to sea and sailed nearly two million miles. The ship itself is very large at

well over 300 feet long. It’s got an enormous set of sails with a full mast called a “square topper.” The ship carries a Spanish Navy captain (the commanding officer), under him, an executive officer, a chief of studies, and an additional 20 officers, 80 naval and marine midshipmen, 20 petty officers, 150 crew members and, because at its heart, the Elcano is a floating school, between three and six civilians are also aboard the ship.

The Elcano is a commissioned vessel by the Spanish Navy, and its mission is to train Spanish naval midshipmen. To do this task, the ship goes on an annual six-month deployment during which they make a number of stops, a favorite being Pensacola. While the Elcano is underway, midshipmen are under instruction learning navigation, seamanship and nautical skills that are needed later in life as naval officers. They’re also amidst an intercultural exchange with the opportunity for personal growth and language development.

“The goal is for the crew to engage with and learn more about our city, as we learn more about our city’s Spanish influence,” Mark Curley, current President of the Pensacola Navy League commented in a press release.

For more information about the Elcano visit and public tours, visit the upcoming events page at pensacolanavyleague.org.

Bodacious Summer Reads

Looking for a good page-turner to dive into this summer? We asked our friends at Bodacious Bookstore & Cafe for a few of their latest top-selling books to add to your summer reading list. Find a cozy spot, grab a cool drink and get lost in one of these great summer reads.

Happy Place

Harriet and Wyn have been the perfect couple since they met in college—they go together like salt and pepper, honey and tea, lobster and rolls. Except, now—for reasons they’re still not discussing—they don’t. They broke up five months ago. And still haven’t told their best friends. Which is how they find themselves sharing a bedroom at the Maine cottage that has been their friend group’s yearly getaway for the last decade. Their annual respite from the world, where for one vibrant, blissful week they leave behind their daily lives; have copious amounts of cheese, wine and seafood; and soak up the salty coastal air with the people who understand them most.

Only this year, Harriet and Wyn are lying through their teeth while trying not to notice how desperately they still want each other. Because the cottage is for sale and this is the last week they’ll all have together in this place. They can’t stand to break their friends’ hearts, and so they’ll play their parts. Harriet will be the driven surgical resident who never starts a fight, and Wyn will be the laid-back charmer who never lets the cracks show. It’s a flawless plan. After years of being in love, how hard can it be to fake it for one week…in front of those who know you best?

Lessons in Chemistry

Chemist Elizabeth Zott is not your average woman. In fact, Elizabeth Zott would be the first to point out that there is no such thing as an average woman. But it’s the early 1960s and her all-male team at Hastings Research Institute takes a very unscientific view of equality. Except for one: Calvin Evans; the lonely, brilliant, Nobel-prize nominated grudge-holder who falls in love with--of all things--her mind. True chemistry results. But like science, life is unpredictable. Which is why a few years later Elizabeth Zott finds herself not only a single mother, but the reluctant star of America’s most beloved cooking show Supper at Six. Elizabeth’s unusual approach to cooking (“combine one tablespoon acetic acid with a pinch of sodium chloride”) proves revolutionary. But as her following grows, not everyone is happy. Because as it turns out, Elizabeth Zott isn’t just teaching women to cook. She’s daring them to change the status quo.

Laugh-out-loud funny, shrewdly observant, and studded with a dazzling cast of supporting characters, Lessons in Chemistry is as original and vibrant as its protagonist.

This Is How You Lose the Time War

From award-winning authors Amal El-Mohtar and Max Gladstone comes an enthralling, romantic novel spanning time and space about two time-traveling rivals who fall in love and must change the past to ensure their future. Among the ashes of a dying world, an agent of the Commandment finds a letter. It reads: Burn before reading.

Thus begins an unlikely correspondence between two rival agents hellbent on securing the best possible future for their warring factions. Now, what began as a taunt, a battlefield boast, becomes something more. Something epic. Something romantic. Something that could change the past and the future. Except the discovery of their bond would mean the death of each of them. There’s still a war going on, after all. And someone has to win. That’s how war works, right?

Co-written by two beloved and award-winning sci-fi writers, This Is How You Lose the Time War is an epic love story spanning time and space.
