PENSACOLA MARDI GRAS MAMBO

The 2025 Pensacola Mardi Gras season promises to be bigger and more vibrant than ever before. This year’s lineup is packed with some of the most highly anticipated events of the season, including the return of the 2nd Annual Pensacola Mardi Gras Mambo on January 11 at the Pensacola Bay Center.

The Pensacola Mardi Gras Foundation, Inc. (PMG) is thrilled to announce that the 2025 Pensacola Mardi Gras Mambo will be headlined by none other than Lil Jon and Yung Joc, delivering iconic party anthems and high-energy performances at the year’s biggest Mardi Gras celebration.

“We’re thrilled to welcome Lil Jon and Yung Joc to the stage this year. Their energy aligns perfectly with the excitement and tradition of Mardi Gras, promising an unforgettable night for everyone,” Pensacola Mardi Gras President Danny Zimmern said. “This event isn’t just about music— it’s a party with a concert centered around Mardi Gras.”

The night’s festivities will kick off with a trio of beloved Mardi Gras music acts who know how to get a party started. The DeLuna

Brass Band will set the tone with traditional Mardi Gras street jazz, weaving through the Bay Center in spirited second line processionals that everyone—from Mardi Gras Krewe royalty to first-timers—is invited to join.

Next, The New Orleans Ramblers will take the stage with their signature New Orleans jazz-style show, serving as a lively tribute to classic Mardi Gras anthems that celebrate the history of the iconic celebration. Mr. Big and the Rhythm Sisters will then take the stage as they keep the energy soaring with a lineup of timeless hits that are sure to have you dancing along.

As the night heats up, Yung Joc will take the stage to deliver a set filled with his celebrated hits, including the 2006 classic It’s Goin’ Down, which earned HipHop Track of the Year at the BET Hip Hop Awards, along with fan favorites like Get Like Me and I Know You See It. His performance is set to bring both nostalgia and nonstop energy to the Mambo.

The evening culminates with a powerhouse performance by Grammy award winning musician Lil Jon. Known for his rhythmic hits and party anthems that electrify parades, sports contests and dance floors worldwide—like

Get Low, Turn Down for What and Shots—Lil Jon’s infectious energy and crowd-commanding stage presence will bring the crowd to their feet, providing an unforgettable end to the Mardi Gras Mambo.

Lil Jon himself will also join Pensacola’s Krewe Royalty on stage to help introduce them as contestants for King and Queen Priscus 2026, the mythical rulers of Pensacola’s Mardi Gras season.

The event will also feature a full-service bar and tasty Mardi Gras-themed foods for everyone to enjoy. Guests are encouraged to come dressed in their Krewe attire to join in the revelry.

This one-of-a-kind Mardi Gras celebration is produced by the Pensacola Mardi Gras Foundation, Inc., with support from a grant provided by Pensacola’s Tourist Development Council and the Escambia County Board of County Commissioners.

“The Pensacola Mardi Gras Mambo at the Pensacola Bay Center has become an exciting addition to the Pensacola Mardi Gras season, bringing together music, community and the vibrant spirit of Mardi Gras,” Zimmern explained. “It’s a celebration that showcases what truly makes Pensacola unique.”

Guests of all ages are invited to come experience a full evening of Mardi Gras spirit, music and tradition. The doors will open at 6 pm on January 11, with the Mambo kicking off at 6:30 pm. Ticket prices start at $35 and range to $155 for VIP.

VIP party tickets, special reserved floor seating, reserved seats and general admission tickets are on sale now and can be purchased online at ticketmaster.com, or at the Bay Center Box Office located at 201 E. Gregory St. in Pensacola.

“Each year, we aim to raise the bar for the Mambo. It’s exciting to see how it continues to grow and bring more people into the celebration while also supporting our local economy. It’s a night you won’t want to miss,” Zimmern said.

RED BULBS #13 AND #14 PLACED ON WREATH FOR "KEEP THE WREATH GREEN"

Escambia County Fire Rescue has placed red bulbs #13 and #14 on the wreath during "Keep the Wreath Green" following structure fires off Ely Road and Crabtree Church Road.

On Thursday, Dec. 26 at approximately 3:40 p.m., Escambia County Fire Rescue units E6, Hazmat 6, SQ3, E4, E7, E17, E1, L12, L21, BC2, BC3, S1, S4, DIST 1, PS1 and CF2 responded to a commercial structure fire with hazardous materials at Pall Membrane Technologies, located on the 8700 block of Ely Road. Upon arrival, crews found a working fire in a storage building containing nitrocellulose in isopropyl alcohol. Since foam and dry chemical agents would have caused an adverse reaction with the materials involved and therefore could not be used, crews established a water supply using two fire hydrants and boosted water pressure from ECUA. The fire was extinguished at approximately 5 p.m. Fortunately, the facility was evacuated and no injuries were reported. The shed and materials were destroyed. The Florida Bureau of Fire, Arson, and Explosives is investigating the incident.

At 1:46 a.m. on Sunday, Dec. 29, Escambia County Fire Rescue units E4, SQ18, E2, E9, 901, PS1 and BC3 responded to a residential structure fire at the 3200 block of Crabtree Church Road. Smoke was showing upon arrival at the two-story home with all occupants and pets outside. A fire was discovered in the truss loft between the first and second floors. ECFR applied water to the flames and brought the situation under control by 2:16 a.m. However, the occupants have been displaced due to the damages. There were no injuries or fatalities. ECFR determined a lightning strike caused the fire. Keep the Wreath Green

The “Keep the Wreath Green” fire safety campaign is a collaborative initiative with

the City of Pensacola to promote fire safety during the month of December. During the month-long campaign, five-foot wreaths will be on display at 21 county fire stations and five city fire stations, as well as Escambia County's Ernie Lee Magaha Government Building downtown, the Escambia County Public Safety Building, Pensacola City Hall and Cordova Mall. Each time firefighters respond to a residential or commercial structure fire with damage, a green light bulb will be replaced with a red one to remind citizens of the dangers posed by fires in residential and commercial buildings. If your home does not have a working smoke detector, please call Escambia County Fire Rescue at 850-595-HERO (4376) or 850-436-5200 for City of Pensacola residents. Safety Tips: Escambia County Fire Rescue encourages everyone to practice fire safety, especially during the holiday season. Residents are encouraged to follow these safety tips so everyone can have a safe and happy holiday:

• Remember to blow out all candles when you leave the room or go to bed.

• Avoid the use of candles in the bedroom and other areas where people may fall asleep.

• Remember to check the wires of appliances regularly and to replace or repair frayed, damaged cables.

• Unplug all small electrical appliances, such as irons and toasters when not in use.

• Check smoke detectors regularly to make sure they are working properly.

• Communicate an escape plan to other members of the household in the event of a fire.

10 BIG LEGAL ISSUES IN 2025

JIM SAUNDERS NEWS SERVICE OF FLORIDA

Numerous big Florida legal issues are pending in state and federal courts as 2024 ends. Here are 10 legal issues to watch in 2025:

— BOOK BATTLES: Publishers, authors and parents have filed federal lawsuits stemming from a 2023 state education law and schooldistrict decisions that have led to removing books from school libraries or to restricting access. The lawsuits allege First Amendment violations, while the law’s backers say it helps remove sexually inappropriate material.

— CAMPUS CLOSURES: After COVID-19 temporarily shut down university campuses in 2020, lawsuits were filed in Florida and across the country arguing students should receive refunds of money they paid. The Florida Supreme Court is weighing a lawsuit filed against the University of Florida over fees paid for services such as transportation, health care and athletics.

— GUN AGE: The 11th U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals is considering a Second Amendment challenge to a 2018 Florida law that prevents people under age 21 from buying rifles and other long guns. The law, challenged by the National Rifle Association, passed after the mass shooting at Parkland’s Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School that killed 17 people.

— MEDICAID ELIGIBILITY: A federal district judge heard testimony this summer in a class-action lawsuit about people who were dropped from Florida’s Medicaid program after the end of a federal publichealth emergency declared because of the COVID-19 pandemic. The lawsuit alleges the state did not properly inform people before dropping them from the program.

— REDISTRICTING FIGHT: In a case that centers on the overhaul of a North Florida congressional district, the state Supreme Court is looking at the constitutionality of a redistricting plan that Gov. Ron DeSantis pushed through the Legislature in 2022.

Voting-rights groups went to the Supreme Court after the 1st District Court of Appeal upheld the plan.

SOCIAL MEDIA PLATFORMS: Florida and tech-industry groups continue to battle in federal court about a 2021 state law targeting major social-media platforms. The law, in part, prevents platforms from banning political candidates from their sites. It passed after platforms blocked then-former President Donald Trump after the Jan. 6, 2021, storming of the U.S. Capitol.

— SOCIAL MEDIA RESTRICTIONS: State lawmakers this year passed a high-profile measure that seeks to prevent children under age 16 from opening social-media accounts on some platforms — though it would allow parents to give consent for 14- and 15-year-olds to have accounts. Tech-industry groups are challenging the law on First Amendment grounds.

— STOP WOKE: The 11th U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals heard arguments in June in a battle about a 2022 Florida law that restricts how race-related concepts can be taught in state universities — a law that DeSantis dubbed the “Stop WOKE Act.” The state appealed after a district judge issued a preliminary injunction, ruling the law violated First Amendment rights.

— TRANSGENDER LAWS: The 11th U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals is considering a challenge to a Florida law that bans Medicaid coverage for transgender people seeking hormone therapy and puberty blockers to treat gender dysphoria. It also is weighing a law that prevents minors from starting to receive such treatments and adds restrictions for adults seeking the treatments.

— WETLANDS PERMITS: Florida and the federal government are appealing a U.S. district judge’s ruling in a dispute about permitting authority for projects that affect wetlands. The ruling sided with environmental groups and vacated a 2020 decision by the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency that shifted permitting authority from federal officials to Florida.

MOODY SEEKS HALT IN AGE VERIFICATION CASE

With the U.S. Supreme Court hearing arguments in January about a similar Texas law, Florida Attorney General Ashley Moody this week asked a federal judge to temporarily halt a lawsuit challenging the constitutionality of a new state law requiring age verification for access to websites with adult content.

The Free Speech Coalition, an adult-entertainment industry group, and other plaintiffs filed suit Dec. 16 challenging the law on First Amendment and other constitutional grounds. The law, which supporters say is designed to keep minors from viewing pornography online, is scheduled to take effect Wednesday.

In a motion filed Tuesday, Moody’s office requested that Chief U.S. District Judge Mark Walker issue a stay of the lawsuit. If granted, the motion would allow the Florida law to take effect and continue at least until the Supreme Court rules in the Texas case.

The motion said the Supreme Court, which will hear arguments Jan. 15, likely will resolve First Amendment issues that would apply to the Florida law.

“The Supreme Court will hear argument in (the Texas case) in less than a month, on January 15, and in keeping with its usual practice will issue its final opinion by the beginning of July at the latest,” the motion said. “That is barely six months, after which this (Florida) lawsuit could freely proceed with the benefit of the Supreme Court’s authoritative ruling in that case.”

The age-verification law was part of a broader bill (HB 3) that also seeks to prevent children under age 16 from opening socialmedia accounts on some platforms. The bill, a priority of then-House Speaker Paul Renner, R-Palm Coast, was one of the highest-profile issues of the 2024 legislative session.

The social-media part of the bill drew the most attention and faces a separate First Amendment challenge from tech-industry groups. Moody has agreed not to enforce that part of the bill until Walker decides whether to grant a preliminary injunction sought by the plaintiffs. Walker has scheduled a Feb. 28 hearing in that case.

The motion filed Tuesday, however, indicates Moody wants to move forward with the part of the law targeting adult websites. Pornhub drew national attention this month when it said it would block people in Florida from having access to the site because of the law.

BILL COTTERELL: CARTER DID IT HIS WAY

When tempted to make political predictions, I always think of President Jimmy Carter.

During an off-the-record social occasion at the Georgia governor’s mansion a half-century ago, Carter asked a few reporters what we thought of his candidacy for president. Fueled by maybe a little more beer than necessary, I said he’d probably have a good time while it lasted but wouldn’t win. Two years later, announcing the appointment of Griffin Bell as U.S. attorney general in the same mansion, the president-elect spied the local press in a roped-off area and came over to remind me how I’d scoffed.

I was surprised he remembered but probably shouldn’t have been. The 39th president, who died Sunday at age 100, was a very smart man whose toothy smile and down-home Southern style masked some coldly calculating political instincts. A winner needs to “read the room,” as they say in show business, and none read better than Carter.

United Press International, the news wire service, had moved me from Tallahassee to Atlanta to cover the last year of Carter’s term as governor and then his longanticipated bid for the Democratic presidential nomination. UPI didn’t want to waste one of its Washington heavy thinkers on a guy who had no chance, so I wound up flying around the country with him for months.

Republicans didn’t matter much in Georgia back then, so the Democrats would split themselves into warring factions. Every four years, it seemed, one side would win the primaries and the other would plot its comeback. Carter, an ex-Navy officer and peanut farmer in little Sumter County, started as a school board member and moved up to the state Senate at the height of the civil rights movement.

figured he was as smart as any of them, so he cultivated the national media — including the Associated Press and UPI — for the kind of exposure Southern governors never got. Meanwhile, Watergate was giving politicians a bad name. Carter’s simplistic message of, “I will never lie to you,” and his promise of a government as decent and honest as the American people were, would have seemed naive but for the lying of the Nixon gang.

No major candidates before Carter had described themselves as “born again” or taught Sunday school. His faith was real but also fit the image that seemed so new and reassuring in the post-Watergate era.

So Carter came into 1976 as a choirboy, up against such insider Democratic pros as Sen. Henry Jackson of Washington and Birch Bay of Indiana and Rep. Morris Udall of Arizona — historical footnotes now, but heavy hitters then. And his biggest, firstup challenge was Gov. George Wallace of Alabama, whose “Segregation Forever” vow of 1963 still resonated across the South.

Carter correctly calculated that a Southerner without Wallace’s racist past could win by running everywhere. He entered every primary and caucus, deploying his “Peanut Brigade” of Georgia supporters to ring doorbells and hand out leaflets for him in New Hampshire and Boston. A first-term senator, Joe Biden, was the first member of Congress to endorse Carter, breaking with a Washington establishment that was staying neutral out of respect for ex-Vice President Hubert Humphrey’s possible fifth national campaign — which didn’t happen.

The turning point, Carter’s big break, came in Florida on March 9, 1976, when he soundly defeated Wallace in a heated primary. His delegate lead was insurmountable. Udall and Gov. Jerry Brown of California hung in, but it was over.

The lawsuit centers on part of the law that applies to any business that “knowingly and intentionally publishes or distributes material harmful to minors on a website or application, if the website or application contains a substantial portion of material harmful to minors.” It defines “substantial portion” as more than 33.3 percent of total material on a website or app.

In such situations, the law requires businesses to use methods to “verify that the age of a person attempting to access the material is 18 years of age or older and prevent access to the material by a person younger than 18 years of age.”

The lawsuit raises objections about how the law would apply to minors and adults, including saying it “demands that, as a condition of access to constitutionally protected content, an adult must provide a digital proof of identity to adult content websites that are doubtlessly capable of tracking specific searches and views of some of the most sensitive, personal, and private contents a human being might search for.”

“As recent high-profile data leaks have revealed, no web users are safe, and hackers are often able to exploit the slightest cracks in a website’s security — however ‘reasonable’ those security procedures and practices may be,” the lawsuit said. “The inevitable result is that at least some portion of Florida adults will feel the act’s chill and forego accessing this constitutionally-protected material.”

The lawsuit also alleges that the law does not properly differentiate between older minors and younger children.

“By defining material harmful to minors’ to include that which lacks serious literary, artistic, political, or scientific value for minors, the Florida Legislature has painted all minors, regardless of age or maturity, with a single brush,” the lawsuit said. “But there is a broad range of material that has serious value for at least some 16- and 17-yearolds which might legitimately be considered ‘harmful’ to a 10-year-old — like that concerning the risk of sexually-transmitted diseases, sexual health, and the enjoyment of sex (in a state where 17-year-old minors may get married with parental consent).”

In addition to alleging violations of First Amendment rights, the lawsuit contends that the law violates due-process rights, the U.S. Constitution’s Commerce Clause and what is known as the Supremacy Clause.

He lost a bid for governor in 1966 to segregationist Lester Maddox, who was installed by the state Legislature when an independent threw the race into the House. Carter correctly figured that times had changed and Maddox — who had passed out pick handles for patrons to chase Blacks away from his fried-chicken restaurant — was a relic of old times that were best forgotten.

After Carter was elected governor in 1970, Maddox moved down to lieutenant governor and spent four years warring with Carter, who thoroughly reorganized state government and drew national attention as a racial moderate. Time Magazine put him on its cover under the caption, “Dixie Whistles a Different Tune.”

All of the 1972 presidential candidates made pilgrimages to Georgia, and Carter

Carter got an unexpected boost when Republicans split right down the middle, with Ronald Reagan almost taking the GOP nomination away from President Gerald Ford. Carter was critical of Ford for pardoning Richard Nixon and scored more in their three debates, especially when Ford inexplicably insisted there was no Soviet domination of Eastern Europe.

World events during Carter’s presidency — particularly gasoline prices, mortgage rates and the Iran hostage crisis — conspired against him so badly that he lost 44 states to Reagan in 1980. But he lived longer than any other president and redeemed his place in history.

SECOND HOUSE DEMOCRAT JUMPS TO GOP

JIM TURNER NEWS SERVICE OF FLORIDA

State Rep. Hillary Casel on Friday became the second House Democrat to switch her party affiliation since the November elections, further adding to Republicans’ supermajority.

Cassel, a Dania Beach attorney, said in a post on X that she supports House Republicans’ “vision for a better, more prosperous Florida” and questioned whether the Democratic Party adequately supports Israel.

“As a mother, I want to help build a world where our children are judged on their character and their actions not their labels,” Cassel wrote. “As a proud Jewish woman, I have been increasingly troubled by the Democratic Party’s failure to unequivocally support Israel and its willingness to tolerate extreme progressive voices that justify or condone acts of terrorism.”

Cassel also questioned the Democratic Party’s ability to “relate to everyday Floridians” and said the party “doesn’t represent my values.”

“I know I won’t always agree on every detail with every Republican, but I do know that I will always have input, collaboration, and respect,” Cassel said.

The announcement came after Tampa Rep. Susan Valdes switched from Democrat to Republican on Dec. 9. Valdes made the move after she lost a bid to become chairwoman of the Hillsborough County Democratic Executive Committee.

The House quickly updated Cassel’s party affiliation on its website, with House

Speaker Daniel Perez, R-Miami, posting on X “welcome to the team!”

Republican Party of Florida Chairman Evan Power also praised Cassel’s move.

“I’ve (known) her for a long time and I know she will be a valuable addition to our team!” Power posted on X.

But Rep. Angie Nixon, D-Jacksonville, lambasted Cassel’s decision as “a betrayal of the voters who entrusted her to represent their values as a Democrat.”

Kristen Browde, president of the Florida LGBTQ+ Democratic Caucus, also issued a statement blasting the move.

"One has to wonder whether Rep. Hillary Cassel is abandoning her principles as well as her party and the voters who elected her,” Browde said. “This is a representative who sought our endorsement and promised that she would defend equality. Now she is joining the forces of those who have sought to destroy it. This is inexplicable as well as disappointing. And it means that Cassel, like fellow turncoat Rep. Susan Valdes, can no longer be trusted by voters of either party."

Cassel’s move expanded the GOP supermajority to 87 members in the 120-seat House. It was a further blow to Democrats, whose hopes of cutting into the supermajority were dashed in the Nov. 5 elections.

After getting elected in 2022 in Broward County’s House District 101, Cassel faced no opposition as she won a second term in November. She has been a leader for House Democrats on property-insurance issues.
