Ask any parent around and most will agree that being involved in their child’s school is important Deputy Head of The and can make a difference in Preparatory School – the child’s academic and social Pastoral Care success. Too often, however, the involvement ends up being one-sided, with mums tending to know more about what is going on at school. Luckily, this pattern is not the norm at TSS Prep. Both stay-at-home dads and career dads are getting involved; as a result, there is also an increased awareness about the powerful, positive impact dads can make.

Mark Wyer

Research shows that boys of involved fathers are more likely to enjoy school, have better grades, more positive peer relationships, have fewer behavioural and social problems, and become more responsible adults. When you are involved with your son’s education, you send your child an essential message – school is important. It is not only the boys who benefit from their dad’s involvement. Research also finds that men who are involved fathers feel more selfconfident and effective as parents, find parenting more satisfying, and feel more intrinsically important to their children. Obviously, the time dads need to be at work can place limitations on how they can get involved at school, but with creative planning, dads are increasingly becoming more involved in their son’s educational life. By doing this, our dads also get to know who their son’s peers and friends are and get to know their son’s teacher, making communication of issues much more likely and more frequent. All great benefits! At TSS Prep, there are a variety of ways that our dads are involved in the educational journey of their sons. It is fantastic to see a number of dads joining in the Year 3 sleepover, providing a reassuring presence for not only their son, but also the other boys as well. The boys also

appreciate the time end energy spent on camps, preparing BBQ breakfasts, assisting with activities and being a general helping hand when needed. It is also gratifying to see the number of dads that turn out for the Reception Father/Son Breakfast in recognition of the involvement and time that their dads spend with them. TSS dads are heavily engaged in coaching our sporting teams and you can always see on afternoons after school and on weekends a number of dads down on the Prep ovals imparting their knowledge and skills on to the boys through their support and encouragement. Prep is also very lucky to have hands-on dads volunteering time in the classroom with small groups and assisting our classroom teachers, participating in excursions and lending a helping hand when needed. The boys also get a great benefit from spending some quality time with their dad on weekends and special trips such as the father/son fishing weekend at Maroon Dam. These are memories that our boys will have of the times that their dads invested in them. I still remember my dad taking me to the park, teaching me how to ride a bike, taking me on camping and fishing adventures, taking me all around Brisbane (and sometimes Queensland) to different sporting events and supporting my every achievement. And how could I forget the driving lessons. The role model he demonstrated to me to be a good husband, father and friend is something I will always cherish. The impact my dad has made and is still making on my life is a testament to the role that dads play and continues to play in the life of their son. As dads, it is sometimes hard to understand the HUGE impact we have on our son’s life. We know that throughout their life they will have various and different influences that begin with us, transitions to their teachers and then to their peers. Whatever way our boys turn, the lessons provided by dads will certainly be the most powerful and cause them to reflect the most. TSS needs dads... dads that can lead, teach, entertain, inspire and most importantly, portray the type of role model our emerging young men need. 23
