Reaching for the sky?
Bandra seems to be broadening; it isn’t a quaint little suburb anymore, where every lane boasted of bungalows, beautifully landscaped with bright sunlight glistening from the tree tops. Now, if you drive through the little lanes in Bandra, you're only cursing at fellow drivers for breaking one-ways or complaining about why that narrow lane hasn't been turned into a one-way yet! The reason for so much traffic is the obvious charm and appeal that Bandra has, which is also the reason why its real estate value is sky rocketing. With its enticing coastline and perfectly paved promenade (well most of the year at least) that allows you a far more attractive neighbourhood than in the interiors of our city. With doggie parks and kiddie parks galore; movie cinemas and restaurants offering the widest array of cuisines, shopping, wellness and fitness centers etc. that all seem to be mushrooming everywhere! Our little Bandra-burb has it all. Its newest addition, not necessarily welcomed by all, but none the less has become a very prominent part of Bandra, as are the multitude of high rises cropping up around every other corner, just down the road from your cousin's house. Growing up, the only high rise around at the time, which was known as the tallest building was Chand Terraces on St. Andrews Road, that became a landmark for everyone situated around it. But this 20-storied
sore thumb won't stick out any longer, as it has competition. Builders and developers are hovering around Bandra, eyeing properties left right and centre, waiting for the opportunity to sweep down and be the first to get dibs on redevelopment sites! And even though it breaks many local hearts, it sadly seems to be the need of the hour. Bandra resident, Yosef Baig, a developer by profession says that ‘Even though Bandra has its charm in the little villas sparsely sprawled all around, the new age villas in Bandra have escalated to new heights and you can now have your very own villa in the sky’. Giving birth to a whole new generation of Bandra-ites (your new neighbours); High rises promise to put thousands of square feet under you and your families stacked one on top of the other, reaching the sky just like a tower of Jenga blocks! Hopefully pumping the economy of this place, creating more domestic jobs and business for the numerous eateries that seem to be buckling under their overheads! So, welcome development into Bandra and please do try the yoghurt in a cone that has replaced the good old 'gola wala' and 'ganna' juice cart! They rightly say if you can't beat them, you might as well join them! Francesca Mascarenhas Pic Courtesy: Justin Forester

Coffee with Simran Singh ‘the only coffee cup reader’ in Mumbai As spiritual healing, seeking answers to the unknown and personal issues, find a solution by looking within; there is a sudden spurt of innovative ways, to connect with your inner self. A conversation with Simran Singh, introduces Bharat Gupta to the art of Coffee Reading. Read on to find out more!
Do you also do ‘crystal ball gazing’ to peek into the future? My Cup is my Crystal Ball. It’s about ‘communication’ with the universe.
What is it that led you into alternative ways of healing? My intuition, has always given me the ability to read into symbols and signs. I can feel the energies of places - and the people that I meet. How did you become interested in ‘coffee reading’? I had intuitive flashes, from the time I was a little kid. Coffee Reading is all about intuition. It is the base of any kind divination. I had been doing readings for my family and friends for years, but took it professionally; when I was going through a personal crisis. Seeking guidance outside didn’t help at all - and in the process, I turned inwards. As this Voice of Divine helped me, I believed it would help others too. Knowing how to read symbols and sings, I took to ‘Coffee Reading’. With positive feedback and people’s love, there was no looking back - and I found the strength through this, to walk on this path.
Can you tell us which figures seem to bring good luck to the client after the final sip? There are various symbols, that are related to positive luck; like fish, star, arch, pear and so on. But their meaning and interpretation depends on the placement in the cup - and can actually mean the opposite! No one symbol is read alone. It is the group of symbols which gives the whole picture of the situation. Are all readings hundred percent accurate? I think the best testimony comes from the people who have got their readings done from me over the years. For 100% accuracy, a lot of factors come into play - the
most important, being the openness and clarity in the person seeking guidance. Is a special kind of brewed coffee and cup used for coffee reading? I use only Turkish Coffee - and a wide rimmed round cup for reading. Does a client have to come with a positive frame of mind for a good reading? It’s more important to have an open mind. If someone has lost their job or had a break up in their relationship, I don’t expect them to come with a positive mind. They are disturbed are seeking help. When guidance comes their way they should be open to understand - and execute the same in their lives.
Are you also a spiritual psychic advisor? How do you go about this job? As I said before, ‘Coffee Reading’ or any other method - is just a tool. The base has to be intuitive - and then comes being psychic. Intuition is based on feelings. You get such as gut feelings about things; whereas being psychic involves seeing visions, hearing information, knowing things emphatically and feeling things as well. So, I am very much a spiritual psychic advisor. When you are psychic, you connect beyond the self to others - the past, present and future. We are all intuitive, but not everyone is psychic. The truth is you don’t have to be. So, the short answer is - you don’t need to be psychic to be intuitive, but you need to be intuitive to be psychic. Dare to Bare Dear Reader, Yes, it is Independence Day once again – an important day every August. Patriotic fervor is already building up & will reach a crescendo on the 15th, with tri-colour flags all around – adding a dash of national pride. Bandra will soon see politicians & leaders hoisting the national flag. But, this time around, Bandra’s Activists & knowledgeable citizens are up in arms – protesting the proposed bill to keep all politicians out of the RTI ambit. Can our elected representatives dare to bare the truth – and be transparent? The local festive season is slowly building up, with a lot of activities that will reach a crescendo during the Bandra Fair – a unique week, when Bandra is ‘centre-stage’ to areas in and around Mumbai. With local activists looking into important aspects of the Fair, we expect better co-operation from our civic author-
ities to control the crowd of devotees. BandraBuzz is evolving fast. Many more topics, important issues & views that pertain to our neighbourhood are in the pipeline. Your favourite local newspaper needs you to interact with us – so that our outreach expands to every road, building or house… and reaches every person – in and around Bandra. Use us to showcase local talent & happenings, so that others will know about it. Meanwhile, do enjoy the cool monsoon winds – especially at our promenades & parks; while it still lasts.

Letters to the Editor Pot-Hole Roads Year after year, we are still seeing potholes. So, we have distributed free bottles of ‘Iodex’ to all motorists who drive on the potholed roads of Mumbai. We can send a lunar mission and can count ourselves in the big league of leading nations in space technology. Yet, we do not have the technology to build simple durable roads. Enough people have died or been injured. Enough is enough, we demand roads to be built and maintained as per International Standards. Now is the time to infuse new ideas and induct a new generation of leaders, who will steer the country towards overall progress. Secure citizens are the greatest asset any country can have. To improve is to change; to be perfect is to change often. Let’s therefore change our old die hard attitude for a better tomorrow and build a City which has excellent infrastructure. Watchdog Foundation "NO RTI ACT AMENDMENT" In October 2012, the Government gave an assurance to the people of India in a Cabinet meeting that it would not amend the RTI Act. This very Cabinet has now gone back on that commitment - and is preparing to amend the most popular Act which it has enacted. Various political parties have ganged up to curtail the Citizen’s RTI, since they are unhappy about the Central Information Commissions decision requiring them to provide information to citizens under RTI, which they are bound to, as they are answerable to their electorate and citizens. Citizens feel betrayed and are agitated at this assault on their fundamental right

to information. They have decided to organize various protests across the country. If democracy is important to us, we need to voice our opposition to any curtailment of our Fundamental Right. Our demand should be: "NO RTI ACT AMENDMENT" Dolphy D’Souza Daylight Robbery There was a time when every front door in Bandra was open 24x7 - and robbery was unheard in this part of the suburb. Trust & honesty was evident everywhere. Now, nobody is safe – and chainsnatching takes place in broad daylight, even on busy streets. Crime in Bandra is increasing, as neighbouring slums have floating populations that see areas in the heart of Bandra as easy target. Sexual assaults are on the rise – even as our police are trying to do their best to control this social evil. As a senior citizen, I do not feel safe even in my own house. Can something be done about this? Haresh Jain Bandra’s Bravehearts Indeed, your July 2013 issue is a collectors copy – as you covered an incredible Bandraite, who passed away in June – Vincy D’Mello. The coverage of him from different view-points was amazing, especially for those who knew him personally. Then, Capt. Andrew Manchanda’s story of courage was very inspiring. For his act of helping rescue the pilgrims at Uttarkhand, even as he risked his life; he should surely get a national award. In my view, BandraBuzz is the best local newspaper. Aftab Khan

Fr. Andrew lectures on the ‘Art Of Living A Fruitful Life’ at Rizvi College The ‘Career Guidance Cell’ of Rizvi College of Arts/Science/Commerce, Bandra; organized an inspiring, innovative, enlightening & heart-touching lecture on the ‘Art Of Living A Fruitful Life’, delivered by Fr. Andrew S.J.- who is a member of the governing body of St. Stanislaus High School, Hill Road, Bandra. This event targeted for TYBA / BSc / BCom students, was presided by Dr. Farooqui MZ, principal of the college. Fr. Andrew started his power point presentation with an all-religions prayer service. His lecture stressed the need for the importance of ‘Time Management’, ‘Anger Management’ – and the importance of prioritizing time for your family. He showed the attentive audience an inspiring video of ‘Nick’ – who has no limbs, yet is strong in spirit. He explained how Nick has accepted his God-given challenge and tries to live his life as a normal human being. Then, Fr. Andrew
touched on the works of Mother Theresa, who said, “The worst disease in this world is not leprosy or TB, but a feeling of being ‘unwanted’. There is more hunger in the world for ‘love, affection & appreciation’; than for bread. He ended his engrossing lecture with a ‘Shayari’ recitation. This lecture marked a new beginning of co-operation between RES & Stanislaus in the fields of information exchange and education for the growth & development of children & youth. Dr. Farooqui MZ praised Dr. Ashfaq Khan (H.O.D. Commerce Section), for coordinating this lecture on short notice – and making it possible. He then thanked Fr. Andrew for his spell-bounding lecture & felicitated him with a floral bouquet & a memento as a symbol of love, from the students & staff of Rizvi, Bandra.

BANDRA DIARIES There are various people we meet, some become a part of our journey; while the rest play their roles and move on. We build various relationships; bonds that make us realize the importance of having other people in our lives. With some, within the first few minutes, we feel that we’ve known them forever, while with others it takes time... yet repeated interactions give us enough reason to find something that pulls us together, eventually. August is a special month that celebrates various relationships. From school, college, social interactions and work, we find likeminded people, who become our friends. The beauty of our bond with friends is that they naturally become a part of our lives, a reflection of our personality and are people we mutually agree to bring into our lives. There is a sense of non judgement, freedom to express and an opportunity to speak your mind without fear. Friends are an extension of our family. This month also celebrates the special connection between brothers and sisters. Protective and unconditional, a love that finds a beautiful meaning in this bond. This relation is not time, space or distance bound.
Bandra Buzz My sisters moved to America over eight years back, but the cord that connects us is as strong and traverses all distances. And then of course, the day that we celebrate the love for our nation, the patriotic spirit for our motherland, and undying bond that we share with our people. The rich heritage, the history and the culture has made us the people that we are today. Independence in thought, actions and words gives us the freedom to choose what we want to do and what we can do. We are blessed with a country that welcomes multi culture-ism and is a curry of various religions, beliefs and customs. This in fact initiates us into a plethora of possible relationships with people from different backgrounds, giving us an opportunity to learn their ways of living and at the same time to appreciate our set of values. So with the downpour of love, showers of faith and sprinkles of hope; there is something about this month that sets the mood right. The ideal weather, the celebration of all relationships and of course a reason to express love, let August strengthen the bonds that you have made till now and make you meet new people, who will hold your hand and guide you through the many seasons to come. Bandra Chicks watch Hindi Movies For the longest time (read: all my life), I’ve resisted watching Hindi movies. My official reason was that I could not bring myself to “waste time watching complete lack of intelligence”. From the (over) acting, the (lack of) plots, the (oh so terrible, unrealistic does-she-get-up- looking -likethat) makeup, right to the (just what is the friggin’ point of) all those songs and dances… oh my, you seriously wouldn’t catch me going to see a Hindi movie. I’d sometimes catch a part of a movie while changing channels on TV and sadly, the bits and pieces I saw never gave me any reason to change my mind. I remember once on a road trip between Agra & Delhi, being subjected to a completely insane movie on the bus. And as I was wishing I had remembered to bring my eye mask (& wishing I owned ear plugs too) – it hit me; Hindi movies just sucked. And then recently the hubbyman and I got our hands on a DVD of ‘Delhi Belly’. Friends of ours had been talking about it at a party, so we thought, how bad could it be? Surprise, surprise (for us, I’m sure you knew already where I was going with this) the movie was SO funny, we had to pause the DVD, simply because we were laughing so hard and needed time for our stomachs to stop hurting. “Forget that, check ‘Vicky Donor’ out”, says a friend when I mention to her that I actually loved a Hindi movie. My mind is now completely downsideupped. Could it possibly be that I’ve had it wrong all this time? Could it possibly be that I’m the one who’s missed out on several great films, simply because of some
stupid misplaced intellectual pride? It sure looked that way. My friend Ashwin explained it to me that, “95% of Hindi movies are made for the Janta. You have to sift out the 5% and definitely not miss those”. Not sure where he gets his stats from, but finally – tonight - I took the plunge. This evening I paid for my very first Hindi movie ticket. Bhaag Milka Bhaag. Wow. Farhan Akhtar simply shines. I’m astounded by the work that would have gone into the making of the film. Into the making of just his body - my Farhan-loving-friend seated next to me tells me he apparently did 2400 push ups a day! Is that true? Is that even possible? I don’t know. All I do know is that I cried at many places in the movie. At the reality that was the partition of India-Pakistan. I laughed aloud at a few places. And though the movie was way too long for me and though the songs kinda went on a bit (hey, I’m still a Hindi movie virgin), it was still undoubtedly a good enough for me to change my opinion on Hindi movies. On the drive back, I felt proud that I live in the city that put the B in Bollywood. To my friends Elvis, Delilah & Saakshi; I owe you all many apologies for the years you tried to convert me and I was too stubborn to listen. Next time, movie tickets are on me. Melody Laila

What’s your ‘heart rate’? Our heart is the most strongest, but sensitive organ of our body. Any changes physical or mental, can be detected by our heart beat. Remember, the moment when you are watching a scary horror scene and your heart beats so fast like it is going to jump out, or when you see your loved one and your heart skips a beat. It is clear that your heart beat tells a lot about your state of mind. All individuals have a varied heart rate (heart beats/minute) depending on their age, sex, activity and stress levels. When we exercise, our heart beats fast and heart rate increases. Every person has a target heart rate at which they should exercise for maximum benefits and fat burning process. But before that we need to know our resting heart rate (RHR). RESTING HEART RATE (RHR): Your resting heart rate is the number of times your heart beats per minute while it is at rest. It’s best to check it in the morning after you’ve had a good night’s sleep and before you get out of bed. The average resting heart rate is 60-80 beats per minute. Higher resting heart rate means your heart has to work more to pump certain amount of blood and a lower RHR means your heart has to do less work to pump the same amount of blood. As you exercise and your fitness levels increase, your RHR reduces and your heart has to work less. As you age your RHR increases due to weakening of the heart muscles. HOW TO MEASURE RHR: • Take your pulse on the inside of your wrist, on the thumb side. • Use the tips of your first two fingers (not your thumb) to press lightly over the blood vessels on your wrist. • Count your pulse for 10 seconds and multiply by 6 to find your beats per minute. MHR (maximum heart rate): there is an easy formula to calculate your MHR • MHR: 220-age For example if you are 25 years old, your MHR will be 220-25=195 TARGET HEART RATE: When we do any kind of aerobic exercise; like walking, running, jogging, dancing, cycling etc. our heart rate increases. But you need to stay between 50-85% of your MHR as per the American Heart Association. Here is a table to help you find out your target heart rate. Age

While exercising, if your heart rate is too high, you are straining, so you need to slow down. But if your heart rate is too low, then push yourself a bit harder. During the first few weeks of working out, aim for the lowest part of your target zone (50 percent). Then, gradually build up to the higher part (85 percent). After six months or more, you may be able to exercise comfortably at up to 85 percent of your maximum heart rate. • 50-60% of MHR: warm up zone especially for beginners like brisk walking, jogging etc. this is easy comfortable and has a low risk of injury. • 60-70% of MHR: fat burning zone, more intense and burns more calories like running, cycling etc. • 70-80% of MHR: endurance training zone, extremely intense, improves size and strength of your heart like spinning, marathon etc. more than 50% calories burned from fat. But people with heart issues like tachycardia, bradycardia, arrhythmias etc need to check with their doctor for the correct exercise prescription and heart rate limits.

Career Guidance I am a B.Com graduate. Many of my friends pursued Company Secretary course along with their graduation. I would like to do it now after graduation. Is it a good idea or am I too late? – Ms. Batliwala It has been a general trend to pursue CS along with graduation. However, you can pursue it any time. It is never too late. Since you are a graduate, you need not apply for the 1st stage i.e. Foundation exam and can directly register for 2nd stage i.e. Executive Program. Students also consider pursuing LLB or LLB (General) along with the CS course after graduation. My daughter is in 10th. We are confused about what field she should get into after her 10th. Please guide us? – Mr. Sagar Your daughter should make a career decision based on her aptitude, skills, interests and personality qualities. You must consult a career counsellor and make your daughter undergo aptitude and other psychometric tests. This will help you all decide her correct career field. There are several career options that exist after 10th. The career counselling session should be able to guide you on what suits her best, based on her abilities. I am a working professional, having a background in Accounts with over 5 years of work experience. But my highest qualification is 12th pass. Now I want to do my graduation. Is it a good idea? – Ms. Ragini In today’s time, it has become very important to at least have a graduate degree. Pursuing your graduation is surely a good idea. You may consider B.Com in distance learning mode from University of Mumbai or Indira Gandhi National Open University (IGNOU). Also, taking short term courses or certifications related to your field would help. I am interested in pursuing B.Des. (Fashion Designing). Can you tell me about the entrance process for NIFT? – Ms. Sheetal The entrance exams at National Institute of Fashion Technology (NIFT) are conducted in two stages. The first stage (written test) will be conducted in February, wherein you have to give a creative ability test (CAT) and general ability test (GAT). If you are shortlisted from the written test then you will be eligible for second stage and will be giving a hands-on practical situation test in April. This is followed by a group discussion and a personal interview. Answers and queries of students and parents on a wide range of career and education topics. Resolve your hair & skin problems with Dr. Meha What made you set up this venture? I always wanted to do something in medicine. During my tenure at college I had taken up a project in hair and nutrition which got me interested in this field. During those days, there was not much buzz about this field. This project made me set my mind and hence I went ahead and set up this venture. How important is it to do a routine checkup on skin and hair/should a routine checkup of skin and hair be made compulsory? Healthy skin and hair are signs of good overall health. Some skin and hair changes can signal a health problem like diabetes and thyroid diseases can cause hair loss. Routine cosmetologist checkups can help the patient to learn more about how to care for his or her skin. Visiting once a year is sufficient for most patients. However, if the patient has a family history of skin cancer, it may be beneficial to schedule a check-up twice a year. Where can one find your products for skin and hair treatment? They are available at our clinic. Does the diet that one follows also play a role in affecting skin and hair? What you apply to your skin helps give it a healthy, radiant glow, but what you put into your body is just as important. A balanced diet rich in vitamins and antioxidants can make a real difference in the
Dr. Meha Mhatre at her Bandra clinic appearance of your skin. Hence, eating certain foods that contain the right vitamins and minerals means you are also feeding your skin and hair. Where do you see your venture 5 years from now? I don’t believe in having a chain of clinics , as I would like to know my customer s personally. In terms of expanding I would do so, by bringing in technology that is not available in India right now. Even though some places provide it, it comes with a heavy price, so basically I would like to provide my customers with better services. What advice would to give people suf-
fering from skin infection or hair fall? All I would like to say is eat healthy food rather than popping pills, maintain a clean and healthy scalp by washing it as and when needed as it depends on one’s hair texture. Above all, the most important thing to do is have a happy and a positive state of mind. Tell us about the recent event that you held We had a consultation that went on for 3 days with world renowned trichologist David Salinger. We consulted a lot of people about their hair and scalp problems. Dujon Fernandes Pic Courtesy: Nelvin Patil
Beauty Hot Spots Every girl, everywhere, has her own set of beauty needs. They can be as little as a really good lip balm to pucker up her lips or going all out with the foundation, eye shadow, primer, etc. And even though we all want to make sure we use good quality products to take care of our skin, we also want them to be at affordable rates. They say quality doesn’t come cheap, however, we Bandra-ites have our own bunch of hot spots that make getting amazing products, and may I add, our local brands as well as international ones, at prices that suit almost everyone’s needs and pockets. If you’re going to do crazy wholesale health and beauty product shopping, ‘Beauty Centre’ is the best place to go to. However, that, is for a person who really needs a large amount of things and usually caters to someone starting up their own salon or beauty-related store. If you’re just looking for a place for your everyday shampoo or that amazing mascara you saw on TV the other day, here’s a list of stores that will cater to them all. 1. Beautiful 613 Plot No, 1, Pooja Apartment, Khar Gymkhana, 17th Road, Khar West, Mumbai – 400052. (022) 26008597 2. Beauty Hub Shop No 3, Kenwood Co Operative Housing Society Limited, Corner Of ZigZag Road &Palinaka, Opposite Wellness Forever Chemist, Ambedkar Road, Bandra West, Mumbai - 400050 (022) 49186378 3. Beauty Forever Shop No 13, Silver Croft Building, Opposite Pali Market, Next To Vijay Stores, Pali Mala Road, Bandra West, Mumbai – 400050 (022) 26461319 From Maybelline’s amazing Baby Lips lip balms, to MAC’s glide-on lipsticks, these stores stock up on all major brands of good quality makeup. And if that’s not it, they also have the fragrant Bath & Body Works’ hand sanitizers, which are always a handy companion to freshen up your hands. Also, these stores seem to be the few that stock the gorgeous rosy lip and cheek tint called ‘ Benetint by Benefit’ which is the original and loved-by-all face product from the States. Make sure you check these stores out and let us know if there are any other beauty hideouts you know of! Anjan Sachar

Delegation meets MP Priya Dutt, for ‘No To RTI Amendment’ support A delegation met with Ms Priya Dutt, Member of Parliament to seek her support to "NO TO RTI AMENDMENT" on August 16th. Citizens have condemned the move by the Government to immunise political parties outside the purview of the RTI, by amending the RTI Act. This delegation comprised of : Mr. Narayan Varma, Jt. Managing Trustee, Public Concern for Governance and Trust [PCGT], Ms Shyama Kulkarni [Trustee AGNI], Mr. Mohammed Afzal, RTI Activist and Member of Police Reforms Watch, Mr. Sunil Ahya, RTI Activist, Mr. P.K. Mukerjee, Citizen Activist and Dolphy D'souza, Convenor, Police Reforms Watch. The delegation apprised her on the following: 1. In the Parliament in 2009, the Concerned Minister on the Floor of the house had assured that no amendments would be carried out without consulting the Stake Holders i.e. Citizens and Civil Society. In 2012, the Cabinet also assured that there would be no further amendments to the RTI. They emphasized that Promises need to be kept - and not brushed under. 2. The delegation impressed upon her that the Order of the CIC to include political parties in the ambit of the RTI in the long run would benefit the political parties, as it would rid them of all vested interests. It would add to the transparency and accountability in strengthening democracy. Hence there was no need to pursue such an amendment. It appears the Political parties are frightened by this
order, which is misplaced and they are rushing to amend the sunshine law. 3. In the current situation, no consultation has been carried out with the Stake holders, hence we suggested that this legislation should be referred to the Standing Committee of Parliament to enable the civil society to also react and be part of this process as is the normal thing done for better democracy. 4. The whole process of such a legislation / Amendment is violative of the RTI Act , Sec 4 [i] [b] [vii], which inter alia states: The particulars of any arrangement that exists for consultation with, or representation by the members of the public in relation to the formulation of its policy or implementation thereof: {This has not been done thus far}. In conclusion, we emphasized the point that there was no need to amend the RTI act, as the CIC order on Political parties would encourage deep participation of the citizens and strengthen democracy. While the UPA Government has been heralding, that RTI has been one of their biggest achievement in Governance; on the other side the same UPA is trying to muzzle the Act. This is rather sad and disappointing - and does not augur well for the UPA. Ms Priya Dutt assured the delegation that she will take this issue up with the Government, Party Leadership and Smt. Sonia Gandhi the Chairperson of the NAC. Dolphy D'Souza

The name is Raul…Raul Lewis! As this writer enters the Lewis’ home in Bandra, he is greeted by the sight of a young Raul juggling a football, in a deep blue jersey. Raul, named by his father after the famous football striker Raul Gonzalez of Spain is a seventh standard student of Billabong High International School (Santacruz). An upcoming talent who trains at the Kenkre Football Academy, he considers Cristiano Ronaldo as his inspiration. Though Raul’s father, Mr. Johnson Lewis was a former university level hockey player, Raul is more inclined towards the ‘beautiful game’, as is evident by the numerous footballing accolades he has won during his time at the academy. Balancing academics and sport does not seem to be an issue for Raul, who was named as Kenkre FC’s most valuable player during their recent European sojourns. Here are a few excerpts of this writer’s exclusive Bandra Buzz interview with Raul, who may just turn out to be the next best thing for Indian football! At what age did you start playing football and which is your preferred position? I started playing football at the age of 4 and though my preferred position is that of a striker, I can also play well in the midfield. Do you play or follow any other sport apart from football? Yes, I do love playing tennis during nonpractice days, as it helps me warm up during Kenkre’s off season period. Kenkre FC have travelled to Europe where you played in Sweden, Finland, Spain, Portugal and Denmark. So how was it playing against world class opposition? It has been an amazing experience, as I have learnt a lot. This year, though it was much tougher as it involved the young teams of Atletico Madrid, Sevilla and Benfica, we still reached the group finals in the Costa Blanca Cup in Spain. Any special memories from your trips? (Smiles) My most cherished memories were the nine goals including the hatrick that I scored last year in Finland & Sweden. This year it is the two goals I scored from the half line, during a match in Spain and also winning the ‘Most Valuable Player’ award for my six goals throughout the trip. What is your take on Cricket? (Laughs) Yes I do play a bit of cricket sometimes, and I love watching Shikhar Dhawan bat! Do you intend to pursue football as a full time profession in the near future? Definitely, my long term goal is to pursue a footballing career in Europe, along with my education. If not for a footballer I will definitely try to make it as a coach! And last but not the least, who is your favourite Indian footballer? (Smiles) Bhaichung Bhutia! Vineet Varma

Acute traffic congestion at Madrassa & illegal garage at Kadeshwari There is a Madrassa functioning as a full fledged Masjid at St John Baptist Road – just before the road junction that leads to Mount Mary Steps. Muslim devotees come to the Madrassa cum Masjid for their prayers and park their cars on both side of St. John Baptist Road, causing traffic congestion and great discomfort to the people living at St John Baptist road, Kadeshwari Mandir Road and Rebello Road. During Ramzan, Muslim devotees come every day for prayers at the Madrassa cum Masjid at St. John Baptist Road. Lillian Pais being active member of the ALM, has been filing several petitions to the local authorities and in the Hon’ble High Court against the stall owners of the Bandra Fair for several years now. This is done on the grounds that the stall owners occupy half the road, creating traffic congestion and discomfort to the people staying at St. John Baptist road, Kadeshwari Mandir Road and Rebello Road. The Bandra Fair is for 8 days - and is an age old traditional fair of the Bandraites. The stalls are put up only on the foot paths. There is no traffic congestion - as alleged. Moreover, it’s an age old fair, so the feel of the Fair is its beauty. This Madrassa cum Masjid has just come up for a while now. Lillian Pais has neither filed a single petition in court, against the parking of the car creating traffic congestion at St John Baptist Road, nor has she protested against this to any authority. Ramzan is for forty days and the people of St John Baptist Road, Kadeshwari Mandir Road and Rebello road are made to suffer for the full forty days. How fair is it on Lillian and the ALM’s part to target only the poor stall owners - and spare those rich Muslim devotees; who come at the Madrassa cum Masjid at St John Baptist Road and intentionally park their car on both side of the road to create an acute traffic congestion, thereby harassing the locals people around. Moreover there is an illegal garage up at Kadeshwari
Mandir Road, wherein taxis are parked on both side of the road, creating another traffic congestion. Why is Lillian Pais and the ALM not taking action against this garage? Not a single petition or complaint has been filed against this illegal garage. Where is Lillian Pais and the members of the ALM
group? We are therefore of the view - that Lillian Pais and the ALM’s can only target poor stall owners who cannot fight back. The rich Muslim devotees and the Garage owner are welcomed by the ALM’s. CROSS Organisation
Bandra Buzz requested Lillian Pais to give her take on these issues. Her reply is given below: The ALM’s at the junction of John Baptist Rd, Rebello Rd and Khadeshwari Rd work together as a group. Some of the residents from that junction visited the Bldg. Proposal Dept on 29th July to find out what was being proposed on the plot that is presently operating as Mosque. The file was on the desk of Exec. Eng. Sunjay Mahale who was discussing it with architect Duberia. As the waiting time was too long, another trip was made on 6th August to specifically meet Mr. Mahale, who was not in. On the subsequent trip, our residents were told that the file was missing from the office and even on the computer. At this time we decided to check the Missing File List that had been circulated to ALM’s in June. It was found that the Madrassa plot was at Sr. No 273, on the missing file lists, having the following details: CTS No B/1018, File No: CE/2444/WS/AH, Ward H/S, Bandra - West, Architect - Duberia Asso, M Jamil Ghadas Trustee, IOD 13/7/2010 for a proposed school. Apparently it is normal for such files to go missing, so that while reconstructing them appropriate alterations can be made to pass such constructions that are not permitted. Least to say the file was obviously being reconstructed by the Exec. Eng. Sanjay Mahale on 29th July! It is a known fact that no new Churches, Temples and Mosques or other religious structures can be con-
structed in the present day. The only way of passing such proposals is as a community center, assembly hall or Madrassa / School. We are surprised that a registered NGO of such repute as the CROSS, whose members themselves have been through such “discomfort” during Ramzan, have made no attempt till date, to find out even the CTS no. of plot! Now that the details of plot have been openly published, the CROSS can meet the Deputy Chief Eng. (WS) Bldg. & Prop. - and air their objections. It is not uncommon for such masquerading NGO’s to try and shoot over someone else’s shoulder to get murky jobs done. Several of us residents attend the ALM meeting with the Asst Com H/West, Mr. P Sapkale and air common grievances. Residents have been consistent with their complaints from the illegal garages in Khadeshwari, hawkers on public roads, cooking on roads, etc. - as also have been instrumental in the upgrading of water lines, ensuring working of fire hydrants, etc. The development of the municipal garden, up gradation of sewage line on St. John Baptist Rd / Khadeshwari Rd and parking notification is in the proposal stage. As concerned citizens, we have submitted our discrepancies in the ELU - and also submitted our objections to the unauthorized religious structures in our locality. Residents have been working consistently for infrastructure improvements and have physically monitored construction of roads / footpaths in the area. It is great of Bandra Buzz - to give residents from all backgrounds, a forum to speak! Congrats keep up the reporting.

Starting or Upgrading your Business? Do you need Venture Capital? Don’t run from pillar to post, just read on… For business-related funds, banks are much more conventional & conservative in their approach. In fact, very few banks have come up with their own venture capital funds. The concept of venture capital funding has existed since many years. In India, it has been formalized and professionalized quite recently. Self Funds meaning those who have their own money to invest on their own types of projects, the geographical area of their preference - it is all their choice. It depends of their financial capacity and their risk appetite etc. Some are sector agnostic, meaning they provide funds for any kind of proposition.
Venture Capital Funding is made available to those who have proven their credentials in their field, who have proven their capability in their field - so the promoter is at freedom to negotiate their terms with the fund provider, to a certain extent of course, depending upon the necessity. The fund will have their own terms, based on their evaluation of the promoter and the project.Funding is structured, tailored, on a case to case basis deal. None will have predetermined terms. Unlike the banks, the project itself can the security offered to the fund whereas banks demand collateral security as well. Angel / Seed / Start ups are more or
less same in concept. They take more risk than venture capital funds, they will have more control of the proposal – how its run, their returns expectation will be more. But they help the proposal start moving. Later on, when the proposal has reached a certain stage, depending on the exit terms, the angel fund can be replaced with a venture fund or bank finance etc. Venture Debt providers are also into more risk taking, for higher returns. They need a credible profile and repayment strategy properly placed. They might take up cases which normal banks don’t entertain.
Bridge Finance providers are more of risk takers. They provide funds for a short time, while the client is expecting a normal kind of funding. So they don’t loose time, preventing competitors taking their opportunity. For further details contact Francis Joseph one of the first members of India Venture Capital Association - Dubai returned former consultant with www.horwathmak.com , which was formerly known as www.agnmak.com in Dubai – and has his online presence at: www.francisStrategies.blogspot.in. Now, unscrupulous women can legally loot men Irretrievable breakdown of mentality in framing amendments to the Indian Marriage Law The Government of India is trying to bring up a speedy divorce law, which has to primarily be a ‘No-fault’ divorce law. Here, incompatibility in a marriage can be addressed without going into the bitter battles that is the norm now, in trying to affix cruelty or harassment on a spouse, thereby dragging cases for years together. By way of Marriage Laws (Amendment) Bill, 2010 the government seeks to introduce a new ground for divorce under the situation of ‘Irretrievable Breakdown of Marriage” where a divorce shall be granted if a couple is separated for more than 3 years and legal separation is sought by either of the spouse. After the bill was introduced and debated in the media, due to interference by women NGOs, clauses for grabbing property of husband were introduced. These clauses made the bill extremely controversial which has met with severe criticism from men’s rights NGOs. ABOUT THE LAW: The bill has provisions for the wife to oppose the divorce filed by husband. However, the husband does not have the same right. This means that a man has no say in the legal break-up of his own family. Under the guise of “Financial Hardship”, the husband’s property – acquired before marriage, after marriage, inherited or that property which he ‘might’ inherit will be awarded to his wife. In situations where a physical partition is not possible in the inherited or inheritable property, equivalent amount of money has to be provided by the husband to the wife. However, the wife’s property, her inheritance, her educational
background, ability to earn won’t be considered at all. While a wife’s contribution in the property acquired after marriage is also questionable, then how can one claim contribution in one’s inherited or even inheritable property? This sounds more like a Gold-diggers Law, which would facilitate unscrupulous women to loot men off their wealth. The bill is silent on child custody related matters. Since shared parenting is an alien idea yet to the Indian judicial system, husbands are bound to lose access to their children, if a wife files for divorce under this law. Remember, this is when a husband can’t oppose the petition filed by his wife. The bill does not give any significance to various factors like duration of marriage, contribution of wife towards building the property while dividing it. The bill is also silent on the status/stature of other matrimonial sections like 498A IPC, Domestic Violence Act, Section 125 CrPC, if already filed by the wife on the husband. The bill does not guarantee either immunity or automatic closure of other litigations, as mentioned above, should divorce be granted under the new ground. The bill does not contain any safeguards for husband from false cases, but does guarantee that he will lose his hard-earned property.
Govt. of India, but will encourage divorce by making it lucrative for women vis-à-vis nurturing a family. The mindset which considers that women cannot misuse such a law, needs to be treated as it seems like a complete breakdown of sanity where it is known that anti-dowry harassment laws and domestic violence laws are known to have been misused by women earlier.

CONSEQUENCES: The bill provides provision for quick divorce with wife getting a lot to gain by breaking the marriage neither does it assure the men by making pre-nuptial agreements legally acceptable. Such lacunae won’t necessarily reduce matrimonial litigation as claimed by the
