Development Plan or Disaster Proposal 7th August 2016 | Vol. 7 (I) Issue 8 |
Everyone is talking about DP 2014 - 2034 – the plan that will make (or break?) Mumbai ready for the next twenty years. But, how much do we really know about the pros and cons of this DP? There are several mega projects built in this plan – involving several thousands of crores of rupees. What is decided now, will dramatically affect our lives and that of future generations. The DP can do good and bad – big time! Surely, most of those involved have hidden agendas. Can we detect them? Are tax-paying citizens not entitled to know the DP – in all its entirety, before it is finalised? To get an insight, Bandra Buzz got some inputs from heritage architect – David Cardoz, a social activist (AGNI Trustee) – Shyama Kulkarni and the Chairman Emeritus of the Forum of Environmental Journalists in India (FEJI) – Darryl D’Monte.

We also asked Dy. Mayor of Mumbai, at her office in the BMC Headquarters, opposite CST – what she had to say about the DP. Smt. Alka Kerkar replied,“I’ve called two BMC officers here to answer DP queries from citizens. People got to know facts, instead of being misled – saying that FSI is more in the city compared to the suburbs. People residing in buildings going for re-development need to know the right regulations. These were clarified. Also, the issue of open spaces was clarified. I think this is a good DP – only when it functions will people be satisfied. We will be introducing a one-window system. Now, the AMC is also very citizen-friendly. The DP is for the people and they will benefit.”
