ROBBER MONKEYS? BIG BANDORAS BACK IN BANDRA – TERRORIZING THE NEIGHBOURHOOD Centuries back, what is Bandra-Khar-Santacruz now; were lush jungles with all sorts of wild creatures. As civilization evolved, the fertile soil, great weather with a surrounding sea; and central access to trade hubs - attracted many migrants. Earlier inhabitants spoke of many monkeys living here – and hence named it Bandor. Later, with the Portuguese; this changed to Bandora. When the British took over it was anglicized to ‘Bandra’ Now, are we witnessing the ‘Return of the Monkeys’? In recent months, very large monkeys have been seen around Supari Talao, Hill Road, St. Paul Road, Turner Road, Pali Hill, Sherly Rajan, etc. Usually they move in pairs – but larger groups upto 8 or even 10 have been reported. Some are
quite intimidating, when they are hungry – grabbing any food you may be holding in your hand. If confronted, they scream – and the entire monkey group joins in the ‘mela’. People staying in society flats on higher floors, have seen monkeys silently enter open windows when occupants are resting and ‘steal’ shining objects – and searching for food. They are always in groups, as if to ‘pass on’ stolen items or just give “KV”. This modus operandi makes one feel that these are ‘trained robber monkeys’. When citizens called the local police regarding this matter, the reply was, “Hey, how can we write an FIR against a monkey?” And – it is true. Vivek Gosalia Contd. on Page 14 >>

MUSICIAN INFOCUS
BANDRA BUZZ
The World on a Santoor String Meeting legendary Santoor artist Pandit Shiv Kumar Sharma, you cannot but experience a powerful and mystical presence in the room, the Padma Vibhushan recipient who a few years ago released the complete anthology of his work, is a thorough bred Bandraite & has been a resident of the suburb since 1961. To many, the Santoor is classified as a folk instrument, but ask living legend Shiv Kumarji, and he is quick to inform you that though many think it is, the 100 stringed Santoor is infact a classical instrument. To date, Sharma has since recorded dozens of music albums, while his son, the dashing Rahul Sharma is keeping close competition with his dad and has recorded over 40 albums. While Shiv Kumarji has played with a host of Indian musicians, Rahul on the other hand makes a jugalbandi of the Santoor with western instruments making it more mystifying, playing with the likes of Richard Clayderman, Kenny G, to Egyptian Oud (an 11 string instrument) maestro Georges Kazazian and Deep Forest’s Eric Mouquet, all his compositions creating ripples among New Age connoisseurs. Pandit Shiv Kumar has been a Bandraite even since he relocated to Mumbai from Jammu and Kashmir in 1960 and since 1961 he has been staying in Bandra. “My first house in Mumbai was on 14th road at Shanti Villa” he recalls fondly adding “the 2nd house was on 15th road Ashiana, and since 1974 I have been living in Rajiv Apartments on Zigzag road, Pali Hill. In my time, there were bungalows and very few high rise buildings. At Pali naka, there was very less traffic, no buses at all. I also remember we used to walk from Zigzag road and go to Linking road which nobody can believe today. I used to have chaat (savory snacks) there. There was also a restaurant Gazebo which was very popular. Near 17th road, there were farms where people used to grow vegetables. We would walk down and buy vegetables from the farm owners. This sounds like a dream today”. (Laughs)
Shiv Kumarji recollects the days when he was recording background music at Anand studio (Dev Anand's studio) and used to walk from his house on Zigzag road to the studio. “Now walking on Zigzag road is at the risk of one’s life” (smiles). The maestro along with the late Naushad Sahab, late Smt. Sushila Rani Patel and Dr. P. Madhok who lives on Pali hill, together planted small saplings on Zigzag road which today have grown into large trees. “It’s nice to see some greenery today and the fruits of what we had done for Bandra” say Shiv Kumarji. During his time, Bandra did not have auto rickshaws, it was very safe to walk on the road and also safe to drive. “Now, your driver requires great acumen to manoeuvre his car, because there is tremendous amount of traffic from both directions on Pali hill. But Bandra still has got its own charm and beauty. I cannot think of leaving Bandra and staying in any other place in Mumbai. I am happy that there are a few changes in the last few years like promenades on Carter road and Bandstand which is a welcome change for Bandraites.” Rahul’s delightful tango with music and the Santoor dates back to when he was barely 13 years old. He used to accompany his father when he used to travel on tours for his shows and that got him fascinated to the Santoor. “I learnt the instrument seriously and ever since I can’t do without it”. A versatile musician in his own right, Rahul is acknowledged worldwide for composing enchanting music be it his slow pieces or music that is fit for a James Bond movie. Born and brought up in Bandra, Rahul has vivid memories of living in the Queen of the Suburbs. Going back to his days as a college kid, he fondly recalls roads without auto rickshaws. “I remember cycling all around Zigzag road and on the slopes of Pali hill and Mount Mary Church towards Bandstand. Bandra has a beautiful sea front and is one of the prime areas in Mumbai. I guess Malabar hill is equally good, but Bandra still is

His love for the sea made him purchase a sea facing apartment. This also gets him recharged to begin his day with a walk. “I simply love the sea view from my bedroom, and enjoy the peace and quiet that comes with it” he says. The only problem he faces in his new abode is during the Mount Mary fair when lakhs of people throng the area and it becomes inconvenient to get in and out of his
building due to illegal hawkers. He also adds in no uncertain terms that “like any other area in Mumbai, traffic has increased in Bandra, but I guess that’s a major problem in Mumbai and any big city”. While Rahul still considers Bandra to be the Queen of the Suburbs, his father does not think so. “I think it used to be the Queen of Suburbs maybe 15 years ago. Now it needs to change for the better to reclaim that title. People who live here should also be ready to maintain the beauty, cleanliness and obey traffic rules. Unplanned construction work, buildings after buildings coming up without any proper infrastructure, has been responsible for the plight of the Queen of Bandra losing its charm and shine to a great extent.”

DANGER SPOT Wrong-side Driving becoming the norm to refill petrol at the HP Petrol Pump on Turner Road
An Audi breaks the traffic rule by entering the HP Petrol Pump on Turner Road from the wrong side (official exit) All Bandraites (at least the pedestrians if not the vehicled-ones who break the traffic rules), will appreciate this. Many of our readers have called in and requested us to take up this issue, as they have been nearvictims of what could have been tragic mishaps. The ‘Danger Point’ referred to in the header is the HP petrol pump at the signal of the S.V. Road and Linking Road junction, a very central spot in Bandra (West), where five roads fork at the signal. The petrol pump stands on a corner plot at this signal
between the road coming from South Mumbai (from Bandra Talao) and Turner Road (leading towards Carter Road). The only official entrance for vehicles into this pump is on the road coming from South Mumbai, wherein vehicles need to rightfully enter to get petrol/diesel filled. Once filled, the exit for these vehicles is on the Turner Road side of the pump, whereby vehicles need to exit the pump premises. The above is the correct entry and exit procedure. But some vehicle-drivers who
are in a hurry, or who have made it a bad habit, prefer to take short-cuts and make their own rules. Many vehicles coming FROM Turner Road, who would otherwise have to get on to the road coming from South Mumbai to enter the pump, PREFER TO ENTER THE PUMP FROM THE EXIT OF THE PUMP ON TURNER ROAD. They do this by driving on the wrong side of the divider on the road and then entering the pump from what is official the exit. Naturally this is extremely dangerous for pedestrians walking on that stretch of
the road near the pump’s exit, as they would not expect a vehicle to come from BEHIND them from the wrong side. It is also very dangerous for those vehicles exiting the pump or those vehicles taking the left turn from the South Mumbai road to come on to Turner Road, as none of them would be expecting a vehicle to be coming at them from the wrong side of the road.

Purerose Baptista strikes a Century! It isn’t every day that a person turns a hundred years old but still has a wonderful memory and can remember certain incidents, moments and events that occurred during their former years. Purerose Baptista has challenged the odds and is still as young as ever! She was born in Bandra, brought up in Bandra and has spent her entire life between Chapel Road and Veronica Road. Purerose hails from a family of eight children (4 brothers and 4 sisters) of which, she and her two sisters, Searose and Mairose, are still hale and hearty. They communicate regularly and often discuss cooking and ask about each other’s health. She laughs and says that people often make the connection and realize they’re sisters because of their names. Purerose was born in 1916 and grew up, staying at Alrose, Chapel Road. Back then only one side of Chapel Road had the convenience of electricity while on the other side residents had to make do with kerosene lamps and wood fires. Since there was no electricity on her side of Chapel Road, she used to go to Mt. Carmel’s Church to study, as her uncle (Father’s brother) was a vicar there. Her father owned a horse carriage and that was their means of transport back in 1916 as there weren’t any auto rickshaws. The horse carriage was parked at Hill Road. She studied at St. Aloysius and St. Andrews Girls School, completing her SSC from there. During her time, St. Andrews Girls School had classes up to the 7th standard after which the next couple of years had combined classes consisting of boys and girls, since there weren’t a large number of students. When asked about any major changes in Bandra, Purerose smiles and says Supari Talao (Supari Tank) used to be filled with buffaloes and in the literal sense of the word ‘tank’, had a certain amount of water in it. She and her friends used to cycle
around the Talao. There were cattle-crossings and people had to wait until all the cattle had gone by. Mehboob Studio was a field and vegetables were grown there. Also, part of Chapel Road had fields and a person could either choose to walk through the mushy, mud fields or walk on the periphery which happened to be the parapet of the surrounding drains or gutters. Most families lived in cottages and every cottage had a garden filled with

love-apple, chickoo & guava trees. Houses were surrounded by barbed-wire fencing. When she was child, her friends and she would only play on a holiday and not during school days. Families were close and shared a special bond. The children used to play hide and seek in the memorable by-lanes of Chapel Road. Once in a while, neighboring families and friends used to have a large get-together for certain occasions. Hill Road used to get lonely towards the evenings and had dim lighting, so they weren’t allowed to venture there. She learned how to cycle with the help of her friends and they used to cycle from Bandra to Juhu. Purerose got married on the 16th of November, 1941 at St. Andrew’s Church. She then moved to Veronica Road. Prior to her marriage, she was a teacher at St. Aloysius and St. Andrews Boys School. She then took a break & 25 years after her marriage, she started teaching at Carmel Convent. Many students remember her as their ‘foundation’, as she was an excellent and kind hearted teacher.

(L to R): The Rose sisters - Gemrose, Searose, Mairose and Purerose When she taught in St. Aloysius, there were quite a few children and not many classrooms. Due to that, there was a shack built and used as a classroom for students. On her birthday, she had a lovely celebration surrounded by her children, close family and her student, Fr. Joe D’Abreo, said the mass. As it was mentioned before, it
isn’t every day that a person turns a hundred years old and can remember the days when they were young, so clearly. Purerose Baptista has proved that such a moment can be made true, as she says, “It is God’s blessing”. Wishing her all the very best and many more birthdays, to come. Nayan Sreenivasan

CORRUPT TO THE CORE Excise Inspectors (Liquor Permit) from Bandra East openly demand Bribe Several service providers get a lot of ‘smallbut-important jobs’, done for a fee. This helps smoothen out the lives for people who are too busy to get them done by themselves. In fact, it makes good business sense to outsource certain chores, and focus on your main business. Here are some bad experiences of one such ‘service provider’. Bandra resident, Ozzie Coelho is one such service provider, who is being harassed by A.M. Takam & S. Gosavi, both Excise Inspector (O - Division) from Bandra East; when he interacts with them – as this is part of his job. He told us, “After paying the official fees (Rs 15,250/- from 1st April 2016), as liquor license permit for at an event, an extra Rs. 2,000/- is demanded unofficially, as a bribe. Otherwise, the permit is not sanctioned, with ridiculous excuses. This is to be given to a clerk in the office, who acts as a decoy. Any smaller amount is not accepted, saying, “This is the
rule”. Many times, a smaller amount is initially accepted, but then the havoc starts: The Excise Inspector visits the event premises, embarrassing everyone at the occasion with his arrogance. He asks for your PAN card, Liquor Invoices – with batch numbers from where the liquor was bought: Goa, Daman, Silvasa ?, individual liquor licences of those drinking, etc. OK, now pack 2 bottles (for me to take). In this way your cost is much more than 2,000/-, besides being in an embarrassing situation.” Usually for lifetime liquor permits, there are no problems. However, for a one day event permit, the Excise Department demands their pound of flesh. At wedding receptions, they take full advantage of the situation – especially if they have found a “big catch” – i.e. a moneyed client. In total exasperation, Ozzie finally told us, “If this is not corruption, what is?” As told by Ozzie Coelho

Doomed or Deemed Conveyance? The H-West Federation, KRA and Wakeup Bandra organized a seminar on Deemed Conveyance and Consumer Protection Act on 24th April at SAISA. It was attended by MLA Adv. Ashish Shelar, who addressed the audience on various issues and promised that the points discussed in this meeting would be brought up in the Assembly for finding suitable solutions. Adv. R. B. Khanolkar discussed the procedure and other matters relating to Deemed Conveyance. Adv. Uday Wavikar covered the procedure and available remedies under the Consumer Protection Act. Below are some of the queries raised and answers given by the advocates on the panel: Ours is a 40 year old leasehold building that is not conveyed (assigned) due to a silly reason given by the Lessee. 14 members formed the society. What are the requirements and expenses involved in Deemed Conveyance? How long will it take? The Deed of Assignment can be executed without the Lessee under Deemed Conveyance. It would take 6 months. The estimated expenses are approximately one lakh fifty thousand rupees. What happens to Deemed Conveyance for a leased plot of land? How will the New Estate Act affect our rights? When is the new Estate Act likely to come into force? The Central govt. has passed new Real Estate Act and directed respective State govt. to pass it with necessary changes, within one year. 7 of 10 flats have been registered and 3 have not. Can we go ahead with Deemed Conveyance? No. Remaining flats will have to be registered and stamp duty to be paid at the time of adjudication.

Planning Structural Repairs to your home before this monsoon?
Heat Insulation reduces the home heating thereby reducing electricity bills Permatech Concrete Solutions (established in May 1986) is a prominent company that has recently started catering to the needs of Housing Societies, besides their regular corporate clientele. We caught up with Mr. Madhu H. Parmar, to get an insight. Could you tell us something about Permatech Concrete Solutions? We have been in the waterproofing field for the last 25 years with successful waterproofing in various prestigious projects. We have upgraded a lot of things – now we use a lot of imported & cost effective material from Germany and Belgium, having total solutions of building and concrete protection. We have imported machineries to carry out all critical jobs of waterproofing, heat insulation, which ultimately enhances life of the building. What are the services you offer and who all can avail them? Our services are available for new & old constructions. For new constructions, the structure would be much better. For older constructions too, there are products. We provide Project Management Consultancy, right from foundation to finishing. The job may be small or large - we take everything. We do not promise, but we perform. Could you mention a few notable projects that you have done so far? We have done projects at the International Airport (Mumbai) that was 1 million square feet. We have also done 10 million tons of STP work at the International Airport & 6 million tons of STP work, at the Mumbai Domestic Airport. Here, we had done an underground structure spanning a length
Roof waterproofing using cost effective material from Germany & Belgium
of 1.4 km, about 4 overhead tanks, underground tanks, spanning the whole airport. With big projects like these, why do you want to cater to the households? People living in housing societies do not know the availability of such chemicals or their effectiveness. All citizens should get benefit of latest technology to solve their structural and leakage problems. We look forward to helping Bandra Buzz readers get structurally sound and waterproof apartments before the monsoon. Which new technologies do you use? We use advance technology of membrane waterproofing that can be laid out over the existing structure - without breaking. As some maybe in danger of collapse on breaking, we have products that can last about 20 years. These products are very economical. Many think that it must be costly, as it's imported, but it's not so. You can clearly see the difference in the durability of structure that use regular Indian products compared to imported products. Secondly, our products also have heat insulation properties, this gives you both water proofing and also reduces the heat by 7 degrees to 10 degrees. This makes a lot of difference, especially today if you take a look at the ambient temperature with it being around 38 to 40 degrees, it will come down by 10 degrees resulting in energy saving. How do housing societies or corporate offices contact you? They can email us info@permatech.in or call +91-22-26510146 / fax +91-22-26441630 Our website is www.permatech.in Wayne Lemos

Entrepreneurial couple conduct kid workshops in Robotics & Crafts This young couple have given up well paying jobs, to give their 100% in what they passionately believe in doing. They are entrepreneurs to the core – and never wanted to be tied down to a 9-5 routine. Their mindset is to improve the practical education level of kids to the next level of international standards. We met up with Shashank & Chrystelle Mathur, to find out what they have on offer - and got some interesting answers:
wards, when I was 18 – till today; we are working with different varieties of robots. This is something that brings out the child in me. I think that this is something that I am pretty good at – and personally feel that it makes sense to do something professionally, that you love doing. For me, this is pretty fulfilling. Also it's my students especially my first student Saahil Bathija who gave me the hope and love to continue on this path of sharing knowledge.
Chrystelle, what exactly do you do? I am the owner and founder of Magical Hands. We conduct Art & Craft workshops for children – specialising in paper quilling and paper crafts. Soon, we will be including canvas painting as well. Our company came into existence in 2011. I schooled at Apostolic Carmel High School, done my graduation in B.Com from St. Andrew’s College and recently pursued a course in Enterprise Training for Women from NMIMS.
Shashank, what exactly do you and your team offer in your workshops? Most of our workshops are for students who are 6 years and above. Others who have similar workshops are for students who are 11 and above. We believe that children do not need an age tag to learn Robotics with us. They just need the curiosity and interest. We have made multiple levels of workshops that we conduct for different age groups and interests. We have programs from beginners to engineering level. Apart from that, we also tied up with a Korean firm this year – whose robot kit designers are the winners of the DARPA rally 2015 in the U.S. We have these specialised modular robot kits – where we have 4 levels, which involves studying for 4 years. Our next field of study in our workshops is 3D Printing. This is evolving fast and is something that would interest most people. We will soon be having a lot of workshops in this as well.
Shashank, tell us briefly about what you do? I am the owner and founder of Metx Robotics. We are in the field of educational robotics from 2011. Through the years, we have conducted several workshops at different locations, generating a huge following of loyal students who’ve stayed with us for at least 2 to 3 years. From this year onwards, we are also including our international variants of robots and those workshops are already open for registration. I am an engineer, MBA & also a Professional Options Trader. Shashank, what sparked your interest in what you do? During my first year in engineering, I was not very sure what I wanted to do in life. Then a very close friend of mine – Abhijeet Salunkhe, introduced me to Robotics. I was very curious to learn more. After going to a Robotics workshop with him at SNDT College; I decided that this is something that I really need to pursue. From that day on-

Chrystelle, what do you and your team offer in your workshops? We offer workshops in Arts & Crafts as annual programmes in schools and even private workshops at different locations. These comprise of 3 months, 6 months programmes and vacation workshops. We cover activities like paper quilling, origami and crafts, using various media. These activities enhance the motor skills and brain development of kids. It also helps to relax and de-stress because of too much studies and other activities in school. Soon, we will
be starting canvas painting to be taken by Abhipsa Das, who is a Freelance Artist. I’ve always had a love for craft, as a child – and thought it is good to do something that I love and make that the business I own today. I never enjoyed doing a job. How do you see yourselves in the year 2020? Chrystelle: I see ‘Magical Hands’ as a brand in the hobby workshop industry. My vision for 2020 is to invite more people who are into the Arts/Crafts to collaborate with us and offer more opportunities for children to be creative. This year was a breakthrough to get an artist to work with us. I would like to send a message across: We would like to see more people who have creativity, to join us and conduct very energetic workshops for kids. Shashank: 2020 is a long time. We look forward to have at least 6 schools covered with our robotics workshops. Our long term vision is that we would want each and every child to at least be aware of this technology, which is very soon going to be very regular in our households – so, they need to

learn about this now. We will be combining it in such a manner that children enjoy learning about robotics and they find it relevant. I see at least a million students learning robotics from us by the year 2020. They will be understanding students who are looking at the power of logic and reason instead of using other uninformed decisions to go ahead in life. This is our ultimate aim. Parents of young kids, this is your opportunity to let you kids learn something practical. Knowledge, which will be needed to operate household items in the not-toodistant future. Robotics will soon be common. Did we ever imagine the power of today’s ‘smart phones’, even 10 years back? FEAT
COLOURS OF SUMMER Given Mumbai's air pollution; it's hard to believe that it is home to some of the most majestic trees. These trees lend a certain je ne sais quoi – be it the gorgeous golden-yellow Amaltas that blooms during the summer, or the fiery red Gulmohar flowers that carpet Mumbai’s bylanes in spring. Unfortunately, these native trees have been slowly diminishing over time due to several reasons, such as lack of water, lack of space, and rapid urbanization. Native trees are a result of millions of years of evolution. They should get equal importance in conservation as a Tiger, Rhino or any other ancient monument. If we look around, we can see a lot of houses where our forefathers had planted fruit trees, like love apples, mangoes, jackfruit, papaya, bananas, coconut, jambul, and their latter generations now enjoy great benefits as a consequence of their actions. First of all, if there is a tree in your garden or compound it creates around it an atmosphere of natural beauty and serenity. It is also obvious that you can eat the fruits from the tree or just sit under it and enjoy the cool shade. What is required on your part is to plant a
seed, any seed and allow that seed to grow into a tree. Among the flowering trees, we have the pride of India, the crepe myrtle is a short tree with flowers that grow on upward spikes and are planted on Mumbai’s road sides. The crepe myrtle comes in a variety of colors, but the most common in the city have purple and white flowers. Cassia Fistula or the Indian Laburnum is one of the more beautiful trees that ought to be planted more often on our larger avenues. A delicate lemon-yellow hue of flower hangs in bunches, in uncommon prettiness. The Gulmohar or Delonix Regis is India’s favourite summer tree. Its bright orangy-red flowers overshadow the leaves and their tracery can uplift the heart even in the city’s dullest, dustiest parts. When more intelligent planners handled Mumbai’s streets, Gulmohar trees were planted together with the Copper Pod or Rusty Shield Bearer or Peltophorum Pesudocarpum. Bright yellow flowers, with a very light perfume these, the tree is named for the dark red pods that appear after the flowers have fallen.
Creepers and shrubs add to the color of Mumbai’s streets and those who complain that this city is not green enough ought to open their eyes a little more to the city’s beauties. The many-colored bougainvillea is perhaps the most pleasing of all tropical shrubs and it often bravely withstands the horrors of city traffic and pollution. The frangipani is also in bloom now — both cream and yellow and pink — and the pink and white flowers of the Rangoon creeper are always delightful. White and pink musandas, with their tiny yellow flowers and pink and white leaves are also visible. Studies have shown that patients with views of trees out their windows heal faster and with fewer complications. Children with ADHD show fewer symptoms when they have access to nature. Exposure to trees and nature aids concentration by reducing mental fatigue. Skin cancer is now one of the most common form of cancer, trees reduce UV-B exposure by about 50 percent, thus providing protection to children on school campuses and playgrounds - where children spend hours outdoors. Whether as houses
for children or creative and spiritual inspiration for adults, trees have provided the space for human retreat throughout the ages. Average temperatures in Mumbai have risen 6°F in the last 50 years as tree coverage has declined and the number of heat-absorbing roads and buildings has increased. Trees cool the city by up to 10°F, by shading our homes and streets, breaking up urban “heat islands” and releasing water vapor into the air through their leaves. They also absorb odors and pollutant gases and filters particulates out of the air by trapping them on their leaves and bark. Did you know that in one year an acre of mature trees can provide enough oxygen for 18 people. Excess carbon dioxide (CO2) caused by many factors is a building up in our atmosphere and contributing to climate change. Trees absorb CO2, removing and storing the carbon while releasing the oxygen back into the air. In one year, an acre of mature trees absorbs the amount of CO2 produced when you drive your car 26,000 miles. Nolencia Dharmai

SPORTS
A look back at Hockey in Bandra with Joaquim Carvalho We sat down with Olympian, Arjuna Award winner, Former Indian Hockey Coach, Captain & Founder of the sports good chain 'Legend Sports', Mr. Joaquim Carvalho - to talk about hockey; how he started out, the game of hockey then - as compared to now.
the Nationals Hockey Championships, be it the sub-junior, junior or senior team - the majority of the team would comprise of players from Bandra, since most of them would be playing for the top out fits like Mahindras, Tata, Air India and the Banks.
How did you start playing hockey & what was it like back then? I started playing hockey in school, as most school boys do - especially if you happen to be a Bandra boy. My kickstart was taking part in the Mumbai Schools under-13 Johnny Verohan Trophy, with around 30 to 40 schools taking part in the tourney. Of course the big powerhouses were Don Bosco's, St. Stanislaus & St. Andrew's. In Bandra, you would see boys playing hockey on almost every ground, even small open spaces - where today we have buildings. Generally players would play for their locality. So, I played for Rest Ranwar, where my family still lives. Every house in Rest Ranwar had at least one hockey player. We had about 50 to 60 players residing in the village, with many of them having represented Bombay (now Mumbai) - to name a few stalwarts like Bruno Fonseca, Rock Fonseca, Freddy D'Sa, Agnelo Vaz, Wilbur Rodricks, Dominic Fonseca, Desmond Fonseca and Errol D'Silva. The Rest Ranwar tennis courts was the playing field for the boys from the village. You never had to call them out to play. The moment they would hear the sound of the ball being banged against the club door, everyone used to come and play. We used to have small five-a-side tournaments, organised by some of the bigger boys of the village, where we had to pay about a rupee as entry - and would be presented with small cups as prizes. It was on this ground that I learnt to play hockey and was fortunate enough that of all the places, I landed up in Rest Ranwar in Bandra. Then, St. Andrew's and later on in St. Stanislaus, both top schools helped me to further my hockey skills. Many tournaments were also held in Bandra which would offer another platform for all the players to display their skills and improve further. Besides affording the opportunity for all the budding stars to learn by watching the top players taking part – the matches held St. Peter's Youth Centre & Coin Tea Hockey Tournament were at our doorsteps. Local encouraged their schoolboys to take part and play hockey, hence you would find so many players from Bandra representing Mumbai. So, whenever the Bombay (Mumbai) team would go for
What is the state of hockey in Bandra today? Bandra is the home of Mumbai Hockey, just as Dadar is to cricket. There is a lot of hockey in Bandra, but unfortunately not enough of hockey coaching camps are being held. Those days, we had a master coach the Late Oliver Andrade, who was instrumental in holding camps during the October & the May holidays, especially for hockey. I don't see that happening now and tournament are dwindling. The once prestigious & popular tournaments like the St. Peter's Youth Centre Tournament has stopped. It was one of the main tournaments where all the youngsters from Bandra could get together and watch the big players. Modern day hockey needs good infrastructure. I think that the turf is laid at St. Andrew's ground will be helpful for the good development all the players. All school boys from Bandra should try and make the best use of the turf, especially their coaches who should take them there and teach them the basics that are required to play on artificial surfaces. The other thing I would suggest is that, while I am sure all the principals of schools are giving all the necessary encouragement, it would be better if all these schools in Bandra play a regular tournament, besides working on the basics required for modern day hockey on the newly laid artificial turf at St. Andrew's - and also make the best use of the expertise of the former hockey Olympians and internationals from Bandra. From this group of 200 players of under 10 and under 12 boys and girls you can be rest assured of many more Olympians and internationals. Can you tell us about your transition from an Olympian to a Coach? That was an interesting transition from a player to coach. I would always be liked to be remembered as an Olympian. As a player I played under many a renowned coaches - and it was always a learning experience. Even today, I believe there is never an end to learning. It all seriously began at Mahindra's, where the three of us, Marcellus Gomes, Somaya & myself used to play, attending the India camps and tournaments together & on our return, would share all our experiences and hockey skills
with our teammates. Of course, there were people in charge of the team, but the coaching was left up to us on the ground so gradually we turned into coaches. Everyone in the team wanted to learn from our exploits. My biggest challenge and learning curve was when I started coaching the schoolboys of St. Stanislaus and St. Andrews together as both the principals Fr. Lawrie and Fr. Rodney Esperance wanted me to train both the schools. Coaching the youngsters helped me in good stead for the future, as it thought me a lot of things on being patient with the players, time management and how to bring the best out in the players. At that time, I never dreamt that I would coach India. My main goal was to coach the youngsters, so they turn into good players. Later with all the experience of being a player, having trained under many a top coaches of the country; my international assignments as a coach later on elevated me to train bigger teams. So after Mahindra's I was asked to coach the Bombay
(Mumbai) team and then the Indian Oil team, which consisted of all Indian players and Olympians. In those two years where I coached the Indian Oil team, we won all the major tournaments in the country and after that I was invited by the Federation to coach the Indian team. I would not say that my short stint as a coach was very satisfactory - it could have been better. In the three tournaments, in which I coached the India team; we ended up with a podium finish. Unfortunately the Olympic qualifier was a different story. You need a lot of time and require a minimum of a 4 year period to really develop the team. So, without any excuses, I think every coach that coaches the Indian team, it is a big test for them - and as far as I'm concerned I gave it my best shot. Bandra is the home of Mumbai hockey, but for it to regain it’s crumbling glory; it is for the schools to give it all that is required. We have a lot of dedicated people in Bandra and we need to encourage them. Wayne Lemos

EDITORIAL
Letters to the Editor BANDRA POST OFFICE Many people perhaps may not know that the Bandra Post Office on Waterfield Road was built in 1914. Today it is a heritage sight. One of the best things the British built. The stone walls is reminder of an era that brought glory to India. Even after so many decades, it still stands strong and fortified with its tiled roof. In the old days the post office was a busy center with people waiting in long queues for stamps, registration and money orders. Today with internet and mobile communications, there are less people at the counters. Yet the old horse keeps going, galloping at a slow pace. Its postal delivery is far better and faster than the modern courier service. There were rumours that the post office was going to be shifted to new location. If that happens residents of Bandra will feel let down because 'old is always gold'. Amar Singh WATER CONSERVATION Narendra Modi's observation, “Clean water is necessary” and declared that there should be water conservation. What he has said however is nothing new. What has been lacking over many years is the absence of action in this regard. Let us face the truth, we have never cared much about avoiding drought. Maybe it has been regarded as an act of God. Year after year the problem occurs. And observations by those in power are expectedly made. It is possible perhaps not to have any drought at all. If we had made a serious effort in this regard, the dry situation could have been under control. Let us raise this question: Has there been a rise of purposeful meetings which have considered the drought situation seriously & considered various steps to get water. We should not wait for the drought to happen. It should be anticipated and preventive steps take and all possible steps have to be taken to get water to drought areas. In fact, during the monsoon, there should be large-scale conservation of water. Whenever and wherever possible, there should be large-scale storage of rain water. Bhagwan Thadani SALMAN? against the Bollywood star Salman Khan being the ambassador of the team. How will Salman Khan generate goodwill? A well-known sportsman and not a wellknown Bollywood star will attract attention at Rio. Not many sportsmen in Rio are likely to know about the Indian film star. He may be well known in India but certainly he is not known abroad. How many Indian sportsmen know about Hollywood stars? A Bollywood or Hollywood star is not known in Rio. Finally, who was behind the selection of Salman Khan as the goodwill ambassador. Is our sports ministry involved in this? Is someone there an admirer of Salman Khan? The selection can only be of someone who is involved deeply in sports or who has had the distinction of participating in the Olympics. It could be a cricket, hockey, football, legend. What about Milkha Singh who has performed creditably at the Olympics? Shilpa Ramanujan REVISION OF BEST FARES I welcome the decision of the BrihanMumbai Electric Supply and Transport (BEST) undertaking Mumbai to reduce the 50% fare for the air-condition (AC) buses but totally ignore those who wants to travel by ordinary or the express buses upto 6km. I strongly feel that with tough competition from AC cabs the BEST management have no alternative but to reduce the fare to half to remain in competition, but they have done great injustice to passengers for not reducing their fares below the 6km travel and have put burden on them. The urgent need of the hour is that if the BEST buses wants to survive in the tough competition world they have to reduce the fare to half for all the distance route ranging from 2km to 45km to create confidence among the people failing which the alarming increase in the losses due to mismanagement will not be reduce and will make mockery of the BEST and its fare proposals. It is high time the ruling BJP-Shiv Sena must realize this grave situation of cash strapped BEST and take corrective measures to make them survive for the welfare and benefit of the commuters who have to pay through their noses in the current badly manage situation. MAY FLOWERS Dear Reader, May is upon us with a bang. Summer is a time when our hair gets lighter, skin gets darker, water gets warmer, drinks get colder, music gets louder, nights get longer & life gets better. Now, flowers of countless heavenly hues have a calming effect, as we cross long and winding roads of flowering trees – that help us ‘beat the heat’, with their cooling shade. Yes, Bandra is truly blessed to have a fairly good ‘green cover’ – an indication of how environment-friendly, citizens are here. Now, our three sea-side promenades, parks and traffic junctions are blooming with colourful plants – beautifying Bandra, like never before. Goodbye April Showers – Hello May Flowers! An exhibition cum workshop on waste management organized by the BrihanMumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC), with the support of Ekonnect; was held on 23rd and 24th April 2016 at the A.K. Vaidya ground, near MET, Bandra West. This was an informative event that enlightened and empowered citizens towards taking the right steps to save our planet from disaster. Bandraites got great updated information on how to create wealth from waste – and save our eco-system. There were stalls
showcasing the creation of compost for home-gardens, from our household’s organic garbage – and the vegetables grown were wonderfully healthy and large. We need to encourage more citizens to grow their own chemical-free vegetables and fruits for personal consumption. Bandra Buzz would like your inputs on the initiatives of locals who have started growing their own small home vegetable garden, using homemade compost from kitchen waste. Maybe, you are using a small window sill, balcony, backyard or terrace. Do shoot us an email about your experiences and challenges – that we can publish. Photographs would enhance the impact. Let’s share information to spread the ‘Go Green’ concept. Together, we can make it happen. Till next time, take care.

ROBBER MONKEYS? Contd. from Page 1 >> Social activist Anil Joseph contacted the Forest Department – and was told, “Monkeys are territorial creatures. Since those seen in Bandra are large, they could be displaced groups from National Park, Borivali – as a result of group fights. They may have been attracted by the many fruit trees – to satisfy their hunger. So, de-fruiting your trees can help. Since many Indians consider monkeys as an avatar of Hanuman, they feed them. This makes them not inclined to go back to their original habitat. So, please do not feed them – even ‘open’ waste bins should not be kept around. Also, avoid keeping valuable items near windows, as the possibility of these monkeys being trained by gangs to rob (after all, who can arrest a monkey?) is very real. This will ensure that they are not comfortable here – and will move on. Most importantly, do not openly confront them, as such big monkeys can cause a traumatic experience by being aggressive – even biting citizens. Regarding sending them back... they first need to be tranquilised and then transported back to their natural habitat.” Seeing such large monkeys roaming freely in urban areas is an unusual phenomenon – and authorities should seriously work towards resolving this security problem. ALMs can co-ordinate to create awareness. Do take heed of what the Forest Department official had to say – and play safe.

She fell backwards, hitting her head on the road, bleeding and vomiting. The CT scan at Lilavati Hospital revealed internal bleeding. Co-incidentally, just a few months before the accident, Priscilla’s son, Warren Fernandes had requested the local Municipal Councilor to install a speed breaker or a traffic signal outside Mount Carmel Church. Although agreed upon, nothing was done. Then, Warren took the initiative to get around 1000 local signatures, requesting for a speed breaker and Traffic/Pedestrian lights at Chapel Road, outside Mt. Carmel Church, so that such an accident would not happen to anyone else. He also met MLA Adv. Ashish Shelar and Sr. Inspector Traffic, stressing upon them, the need for a solution to the problems faced by pedestrians crossing the road. With 6000 parishioners (Mt. Carmel Church) and 1000 school children (St. Aloysius School), besides the general public; the lives of so many are at risk. After constant follow up with the Traf-
fic Department and Sr. Inspector (Traffic), Ms. Vijayalaxmi Hiremat informed Warren, that she has sent the proposal to Head Office. Also, MLA Adv. Ashish Shelar has spoken directly to the Joint Commission of
Police Traffic, who agreed to install the signal outside Mount Carmel Church. Recently, Sr. Inspector Traffic, Ms. Vijayalaxmi Hiremat told our reporter, “The tender for the Traffic Signal System has been issued
and it will be installed as soon as possible”. Now - Let’s look forward to better pedestrian safety here and other similar spots. Chetan Ghosalkar
