H-West Federation organizes LBT Meeting at Bandra Hindu Association The H-West Federation organized a public meeting on the vexatious issue of Local Body Tax (LBT) on Sunday, 9th June, at the Bandra Hindu Association. Despite torrential rains, a number of people from the suburbs turned up to learn more about the issue that has hogged headlines over the past several weeks.

Indeed, it was an informative event. Speakers at the meeting included noted Bandra-based C.A. Mr. Rajesh Sanghvi, Mr. Mohan Gurnani, President- Federation of Associations of Maharashtra and Mr. Ashok Garg, Chairman - Iron and Steel Merchants' Association - who have been leading the LBT movement and Mr. Sachin Sawant, Spokesperson - Maharashtra Pradesh Congress Committee. The session was moderated by noted advocate and activist, Mr. Sandeep Jalan.

Mr. Sanghvi set the tone for the meeting with his in-depth presentation on the proposed Local Body Tax structure. He pointed out that while, in lieu of octroi, this tax could not be opposed since the BMC needed funds to run the city. The Government wants to introduce an extremely complicated process for the same which would entail endless paper work, the necessity for maintaining several years of documents and the ever-present possibility of scrutiny at any point of time. While the number of entities who would end up paying LBT would not be substantially higher than those paying octroi, the alarming clause was that many more sectors, including the smallest sandwich seller on the street and even professionals could end up having to register for LBT even though they may not have to pay it in the long run. Also, it appeared from the provisions that all those who would need to register for the LBT would need to maintain receipts for the smallest purchases made, even to the extent of stationery used in the office or spend on entertaining clients, event though these would be sourced locally, since the tax was based on total purchases per

day, irrespective of the product or its origin.

Mr. Gurnani and Mr. Garg pointed out that they were not against payment of the tax amount. In fact, as patriotic Indians, they considered it their duty to pay so. However, they were against the tax being collected by the BMC as they felt that this would open them up to harassment at every point and increase corruption all around. Their contention was that by doing this, the government was closing down four octroi points but in effect was opening an octroi point in countless shops and homes across the city and actually handing over the reins to the same corrupt departments who were accused of creating the massive octroi scam which had led to the current situation.

They also alleged that both the Chief Minister and Mr. Sharad Pawar had gone back on their word to appoint a committee comprising both bureaucrats and traders to study the issue and submit a report within a month. Though it was a month since these assurances were given, no committee had been instituted; the one that was proposed comprised only of bureaucrats with no trader representation. They proposed that since businessmen were already subjected to several taxes, LBT could also be collected by the VAT department with a provision to remit the amount to the BMC's coffers. In this way, there would be cohesion in the collection of taxes and traders would not have to spend hours of their time maintaining separate books for different departments collecting tax.

Besides, they argued, if GST was to be imposed within the next 2/3 years, and when the MCGM would anyway need a couple of years to put in the system to collect LBT, why introduce LBT now, why not wait for GST? Responding to these points, Mr. Sachin Sawant contended that the government had accepted all the 27 demands made by the traders. He wondered why only the Mumbai traders were agitating on the issue

and why were they not taking up the cause of other cities if they were so concerned about the issue? He accused the traders’ associations of misleading the public and presenting an unnecessarily alarming scenario. He assured the audience that LBT would certainly not bring in an “Inspector Raj”, as feared by them.

Mr. Garg countered Mr. Sawant by stating that traders from many other cities in Maharashtra were together in this agitation and alleged that the press was being coerced into not reporting fairly. Mr. Gurnani stated that despite the main leaders of the agitation being lodged in Arthur Road jail for a night and the hunger fast that he had undertaken with others on the issue, the press did not bother to even report on the same. He pointed out that while the Azad Maidan Andolan had 40,000 traders present– no media was allowed to cover this movement.

Many members of the audience expressed their views on the subject with some of them wondering why, when only 1% of the people pay octroi now, why the remaining 99% people are were being sought to be brought under the purview of the LBT. Ravi Mehra, businessman from Khar, in an anguished outburst contended that multiple and complicated tax systems were ruining our cities. He said, "No one works as hard as us, even as compared to other lands, nor do they have competent politicians to interact with the public as we do. However, their policies are good and in place – the implementation of these policies is in place, so the country works!! We, with great politicians and hardworking people are failing!"

The meeting ended with the promise to meet again in a couple of months to take stock of the situation as it unfolds. The Federation will hold its next public meeting on 7th July on the issue of Leased Properties.

Bandra’s got its own Bravehearts

The Bandra West Citizen’s Initiative was formed to engage the community on the issue of public safety with the view to making localities safer through citizen involvement and collaboration.

Under the guidance of Deepti Doshi, the founder of Haiyya, a team was formed in Bandra comprising of ordinary citizens who were interested in bringing about change and making a difference. These committed individuals are quite diverse – age groups ranging from 16 to 75, housewives, ALM heads, corporate professionals, students, professors, lawyers and reside between Manuel Gonsalves Rd to Chimbai.

Over the past few weeks, they have been talking to their neighbours and gathering information on safety issues affecting personal lives in their localities. These conversations have revealed a host of problems ranging from chain snatching and mugging, organized bikers who intimidate the public, traffic violations that are growing in number, bogus policemen who appear whenever a failed attempt at robbery takes place, prostitution, drug peddling and addicts who loiter around, strange people hanging around lonely streets during the day who actually are casing their next location for a robbery and many more other issues.

On 18 May, this information was showcased to the community at the De Monte Park (opp Laburnum) where citizens were encouraged to interact with victims who shared their stories and lawyers who gave an insight into the basic rights of citizens. In addition, they were asked to select options for possible actions to improve safety as well as suggest ideas which can be implemented. Some of the actions that are being worked on are neighbourhood watch groups called Bravehearts, training and awareness programmes on basic safety practices, legal rights, etc, using social media and other forms of media to highlight the problems and create awareness.

Last weekend the BWCI organized a workshop on self defence conducted by Joe Rodrigues, the Founder of Breakthrough Communications. Despite the heavy rain, a total of 40 participants attended the workshop where they were taught simple yet effective moves to • Fortify one’s Mind instantly • Amplify one’s physical strength beyond one’s own belief • Develop a ‘don’t mess with me’ walk • Respond with quick and easy moves if you are attacked Everyone had a chance to practise the techniques and walked away feeling confident and empowered.

Bravehearts was another community initiative formed in Bandra in April earlier this year. They believe in being the ‘Eyes and Ears’ of Public safety in and around areas in Bandra. Their first phase started by them having over 150 conversations with people around, gathering information from them regarding the problems.

After a huge success in the initial phase, their second phase was to make the infor-

mation known to the people and ask for volunteers among them would help in providing aid to the victims of safety issues in Bandra. It was done through information fairs where they gave out solutions to the people and they themselves were asked to vote as to which they found to be most appropriate and wanted to be involved in. Bravehearts founder, Elsa says, “Community help will come from people understanding their own problems and solutions for it.”

There was a unified vote that everybody had for a neighbourhood watch. The decision for every street to have their own teams was finalized as the people from the same street will know the people around very well and there wouldn’t be a problem in helping the needy people in times of distress.

Success was achieved when a victim was accompanied by the neighbors to the police station and the Head cop handled the case himself with immediate effect. They have to put a minimum of five hours in the whole month.

They are soon going to start a Mobile App where the victims can tell the people their problems and those people who have the app will be able to see the problem and if they feel they can volunteer and help they can do so.

Safecity.in is their online site which is a reporting platform which is used for people to report their problems and for others to see what is happening in Bandra.

Editors Letter Dear Reader, June just rocks… yes, the rising tidal waves are lashing our rocky Bandra coastline. This time of the year, the resulting spray is wider and higher. At the Reclamation, Bandstand & Carter Promenades, it is an awesome sight to see the splendor & power of nature.

As cooler temperatures take us to the monsoon season of 2013, the ‘pitter-patter’ of raindrops, the sea of umbrellas of all sizes, shapes and colours are seen on the busy streets of Bandra. The BMC is doing a remarkable pre-monsoon job of tree-trimming and de-silting. Other public utility services too are getting their act together.

The new BMC property tax issue has helped bind all communities in Bandra & the city in their resolve to oppose this ‘Capital Value Based System’ – which is absolutely ridiculous. The Property Owners Association (POA), Mumbai - along with Mulla & Mulla and a team of top ad-

vocates are fighting this issue. They are filing a Writ Petition, challenging the constitutional validity of the new Capital Value Based BMC Property Tax – with the case coming up before the 30th June 2013 BMC deadline. They have the legal support of several thousands of citizens across Mumbai (In Bandra, the drive was spearheaded by the BCS Bandra Deanery, who helped garner around 200 affidavits within a week – more details at: bandrabuzz.com/property-tax.html). UPL, VP Corp Comm. Mr Sundar Bala Subramanium with the womens finalist Bandraites love hockey. They know how to play it in style and give credit to the slaves of the game. UPL Bandra Hockey League under floodlights was started in 2009 at the Fr Donnelly Gym (Grass grounds), St Stanislaus High School. In 2012, it instituted the B. K. Mohite Cup in memory of Balram Krishna Mohite.

‘Bombay Republicans’ is the club Mohite established in the year 1963.

All that he could think of then was hockey... and more hockey. “So passionate was he about the game, that he decided to form his own club”, says Patel who is fondly called ‘Bawa’ by the hockey loving public in the city. “And because the club was launched on January 26, he decided to name it the ‘Republicans’.”

Yes, passion can do many things to many people. Just the way the late Mohite wouldn’t think twice before mortgaging his wife’s jewellery, in order to facilitate his club’s trips to various towns around the countr, so that they could participate in various tournaments. “The Republicans used to travel a lot, thanks to Mohite. Even though we hardly won any big tournament, we were always very competitive,” recalls the 60-year-old

Former International Viren Rasquinha agrees, “Playing for the Republicans helped me a great deal. It’s such a boon for players fresh out of school, because there is big gap after school, until a club selects a player. That void has been filled successfully over the years by the Republicans. Founded in 1963 by the late Balram Krishna Mohite, Bombay Republicans was always meant to give the youth a vent to express their bustling lives. Decades have passed but the agenda has never wavered. I am sure it won’t change for the next 50 years”.

Mumbai hockey suffered a major loss after Balram Krishna Mohite, ex-National hockey umpire passed away at Nashik, due to prolonged illness on 30.5.2005.

He was 75. Mohite’s ultimate dream of opening a Republican Hockey Academy should come true in a couple of years, through the efforts of ex-republican players. This year the groups were clubs, women’s and school boys under 14.

(P.R. ?) Before this, we heard that he was paying his bodyguards to harass and clean up the Chimbai Kolis & their boats.

The Bandra Police had started an unending inquiry (3 months now)... while Alistair Pereira & Nooriya Haveliwala had their hit ‘n’ run cases fast tracked – and have served their sentences for incidents in 2007 & 2009.It is shameful to see that a local Bollywood actor’s hit ‘n’ run case is relaxin’ in the hands of the Bandra Police.

Neil Pereira SPROUTING SLUMS The most exclusive of Bandra addresses - B.J. Road, is set to become a slum. A colony of slum dwellers have fancied the exclusive sea view off B.J. Road, Bandra West (along the periphery of the children's park, opposite Galaxy Apartments) and have decided to usurp the address to make it their permanent abode.

Your very own Bandstand Promenade is under attack.

Evidently, they have found a loop hole, which allows them to set up camp while the BMC and government officials look on and say "There's nothing we can do". A significant portion of the land off B.J. Road (Bandstand, Bandra West) along the sea coast belongs to the Mumbai Port Trust (MPT). The BMC and the government officials therefore say they cannot act against the slum dwellers; who have only recently set up camp at this location, as the land belongs to the MPT. It is important to note, that while a significant portion of the rock beach along B.J. Road may belong to the MPT (which by the way is a government institution) - does that fact give the government and the municipality the right to wash their hands off the issue of multiplying slums at this location? Probably

not!!! No where in the world would squatters be allowed to usurp prime property - and definitely not government property. Why then - in the case of B.J. Road, are these slums being allowed to multiply and destroy one of the few remaining magnificent sea views left in Mumbai.

The MPT and the government must immediately work towards removing the slums which have come up along the periphery of the children's park, off B.J. Road, opposite Galaxy Apartments. We must not yet again loose the beauty of Bandra, just because of red tape!

K. Advani To think of the gradual land grabbing these slum dwellers have done on Bandra’s prime coastline between April 2013 and June 2013... and no one brought this up. This is shocking. Thanks for bringing this up. Hope the slums are removed immediately.

X. Gidwani There are too many drivers of cars and two-wheelers in Bandra driving on the reverse side of one way steets. There have already been several accidents because of this. Let us not be silent spectators when we see such wrong doing! Also support those who are rightfully objecting to such wrong doing.

WATCH YOUR WEIGHT!!!

Every soul fancies a perfect body & everyone aims at achieving their dream figure, but how does one get there?

Here are a few easy to abide by guidelines: • Eat to satisfy your waistline, not your emotions. Do not consider food as a comforting tool for your emotional, mental & spiritual problems.

• There are no shortcuts to success.

This hold true for weight loss as well.

Crash dieting may seem to be an easy way to lose all those extra pounds, but it is the water & muscle what one loses in the bargain. Fat still remains and when off crash dieting, one tends to gain back all the weight that he/she lost & more.

• Consume 5-6 small meals a day. Eating frequently prevents hunger pangs & binges that follow, provides consistent energy & is an effective way to maintain your basal metabolic rate. A fruit or 2 biscuits or whole wheat bread sandwich can be a mid meal.

• Never skip a meal, as our threatened with starvation & goes into a survival mode. It conserves the fat & brings weight loss to a halt.

• Eat your meals slowly as it gives our body the time to tell us when we are full before we’ve eaten more than our body needs.

• Include loads of fiber in your diet such as whole grains, legumes, fruits & veg-

etables. It keeps you full for a longer time & prevents excess fat absorption.

• Limit the amount of sugar & processed foods such as pizzas, burgers, refined flours, cakes, doughnuts etc in your diet as it raises your blood sugar levels instantly & promotes fat storage.

• Good quality proteins such as lean chicken, fish. Egg whites, slim milk, slim paneer, Soya, sprouts etc should be a part of your daily meals to help in wear & tear & maintenance of muscles.

• Do no eliminate fats completely from your diet as it is essential for the body’s cells & tissues & for absorption of essential vitamins & minerals. Opt for good fats such as rice bran oil, olive oil etc & reduce the intake of bad fats such as ghee, butter, margarine etc.

• Exercise regularly. Incorporate cardio & weight training along with flexibility training in your routine to tone up your body & increase your metabolism (fat loss).

• Take it easy. Follow a healthy diet & exercise in limits of your capacity. Overdoing may get you discouraged sooner or later thereby abandoning everything.

Weight loss is all about adaptation to lifestyle & behavior modification & regular exercise. No matter what & how u do it, it is all about enjoying the process.

I'M A SCARY BANDRA CHICK Eleanor Roosevelt famously once said "Do one thing every day that scares you."

When she said “scares you”, she was definitely not referring to my hubbyman sneaking-up-behind-me-and-making-mejump-up-in-fright-and-spill-my-coffee-onmy-new-blouse type scariness.

She was referring to the getting-outof-our-comfort-zone type scariness. For our comfort zones are, well, comfortable.

And things outsides are, new. And some people equate new or different with scary.

Not me though.

I for one love doing new things, love

“scaring myself” in true Roosevelt fashion and love finding out if I’m good at new things – which of course like most Bandra chicks, I am.

I’ve newly decided to learn the drums.

“What?!” you ask astounded, “in your late twenties?!” “What’s age got to do with anything?!” I’d reply to you and secretly conceal that I am in fact thirtysomething.

Age however, has everything to do with it. For me, doing new things keeps me young. Makes me realise there’s so much more of life to look forward to, so many

things yet to do, so much more I can become if I apply myself more. All those 'older ladies getting black belts in karate' stories make me realise that there’s probably a good chance I could live to a ripe old age and still not have done or tried everything I want to.

And isn’t that just superb?!

Imagine a world where everyone of every age is content to better themselves, to try out new things, to keep learning, keep trying.

The thrill of learning to ride a cycle for the very first time (I learned post age 30)!

The thrill of learning a new swim stroke in the pool (learned a new one last week).

The thrill of confronting your fears. The resolve to make peace with someone, unsure if they’ll accept it. The decision to do something you wouldn’t normally, even if just to make a loved one happy.

ple who make you unhappy, make new friends, climb a mountain (hubbyman assures me this is *the* season for trekking), join a bridge club, take a course to better learn your faith, learn to use the www, get a facebook account, (or better still, close your facebook account & discover time you thought you didn’t have), learn to cook (yes my m-i-l was thinking I need to do this right when she started reading the article), learn to relax, read a new author, take up a sport. Push yourself.

There’s so much more out there than you're doing already – and you’re not scared of any of it.

Where are my dabbas, Mr. Chunky Pandey?

As a young adult, my taste in silver screen stars was a bit off!

While most of my friends swooned over Aamir khan for his Choco boy looks or Jackie Shroff for his tremendous personality or even Anil Kapoor for his perfect acting skills, I reluctantly admit I liked or lets say 'really dug' none other than,'Chunky Pandey'.

I know I know, most Bandraites called him, 'Chunky the monkey' those days, but he was an absolute fave with me.

So when given an opportunity by a photographer friend to watch him shoot 'C. P.', I jumped to it like an eager beaver.

Dressed in my fluorescent pink trousers( well those days those were in, I swear) matched with shocking pink earrings (pushing the fashion button) I made my way to a small studio in Bandra, to meet my favourite hero....'Chunky Pandey'!

He was friendly and funny just like I thought he would be, we struck up a conversation I can't remember what but somehow I landed his number and my then 'partner in crime' Mona and me, started crazy fan calling him. Not one to fear border line stalkers, he graciously invited us over to his home at Hill Road, and then catching on to my parsi heritage he very sweetly asked me to get some 'dhanshak' for him the next time we came over.

Promptly next Sunday we were at his place with some 'chicken dhanshak' which my mother prepared at gun point.

Following Sunday I charged off again to his place, hot dhanshak in hand, this time my grand moms cook was the victim of my demands.

Few weeks into our Sunday ritual, my family started questioning me about the dabbas they had sent their goodies in, that

never made their way back to our place.

I ignored their queries, all I remember was holding Mona's hand nervously while I rang his door bell, clutching the hot steel tiffin box, hoping he would come to see us at the door. Sometimes if we were lucky we got invited to see the new house he was furnishing next to his old one and a small chat before he bid us good bye.

Pandey was always polite and great at cracking immense one liners and I definitely didn't want to look like a cheap skate for reminding him to return the stainless steel boxes which all mothers, aunts and grandmas are, for some unknown reason, known to be volatilely possessive about. ''The dabbas have our surname and initials inscribed on them.

They have been in our family for years, made of pure stainless steel!''

And then one day I was repri-

BANDRA DIARIES There is a mystery behind the existence of every place; a past that reflects in its present, a culture that makes it unique. There is a certain energy that flows through it, a magnetic force that keeps you attached.

It is this force that makes you call that place, home.

This month was extremely unsettling.

For one, my birthday that falls in May always makes me slightly home sick, and on the other hand the place I came to call my home was changing. The only thing I was sure of this month was that even though ‘change is good’, it shall be made within Bandra! So walking in and out of houses, matchboxes, pigpens and overpriced apart-

ments, I knew this would be quite a task.

And even though I forced myself to go beyond Bandra and look for places that the brokers claimed would be ‘bigger and better at the same price’, I knew money couldn’t buy everything.

This was followed by a series of taunts ‘you’re status conscious’, ‘you should reconsider so you can save more’, ‘why Bandra?’ I had only one answer for all of them- you wouldn’t know, you’ve not lived in Bandra. And as arrogant as I might have sounded, the statement was true in all its spirit. Your comfort space extends beyond just the four walls of your house, and in all the rarity of finding open

spaces in Mumbai; Bandra gives that to you in its best ability. In those moments when you feel alone, this place fills your heart and compensates the lack of anything. So eventually, I felt a sense of reassurance that even though I was shifting; it was into a home away from home.

And when universe knew what I wanted, it didn’t take long for it to conspire and make it happen. So even though the emotion hidden behind each door crept into my heart and the memory stored in every shelf tried to fit into the empty cartons; I was sure that I was clearing clutter and making space for something new.

Change is necessary not for you to forget

That was the last I saw of Chunky for a long long time.

Recently, almost 18 years later, I bumped into him at a work event and though he kindly tried to place me from somewhere, he clearly had forgotten about the scrumptious food he had gorged on.

That day I had half a mind to shout out: ''Where are my dabbas Chunky Pandey?

My folks still ask for them, can I please please have them back?''

Kainaz Jussawalla all that brought you where you are, but for you to let go, to make a beginning without judgement and an opportunity to create new memories. And a shift in house was synonymous to a shift in thinking. As with each thing that I threw out, I also threw out emotional baggage, mental clutter and irrational memories that didn’t need to be a part of my system.

The last ride from my old place to the new one gave me a fresh perspective and a new outlook; but I knew the road that would lead me back to where I came from. So as many steps as I take ahead, I’ve left a trail to go back to exactly where I came from.

Bandra Buzz

Wajood - Bandra’s very own hindi rock band Not often do you come to know about taking an interview, just a few hours before you meet the interviewees; but the challenge is always fun and interesting to look forward to. The meeting was fixed to be at Candies, one of Bandra’s busiest places to hang out from a long time now. I didn’t know what to expect.

I only knew that I was going to meet the band members of Bandra’s very own Hindi rock band WAJOOD. Wajood came into existence in early 2010, when Sahil Sharma the lead guitarist of the band and Mohit Gopalani, resident of Chimbai, then table-playerturned-drummer ; along with an ex-band mate began performing at college festivals, particularly at Aakarshan, the annual festival of MMK College. They being ex-MMK students, their music was recognized and loved by all. They started out by playing covers of bands like Jal, Euphoria, etc. - as they believed the college crowd will relate to it. A year later, the band saw the inclusion of Sharukh Makani, the bassist and Faraz SohaIl, rhythm guitarist and vocals. Since then, there has been no looking back for them.

Their genre shifted from Hindi Pop Rock to Hindi Alternative Rock when they realized that this is what the audience really liked in their music.

If these names automatically ring a tune in your ears… then rewind to Car Free Day on 24th February 2013 on Carter Road, when you heard them play their heart out alongside other artists/bands

Their journey spanning over three years, has had not one but many highlights by their performances in the opening for Farhan Saeed, the ex-vocalist of JAL, at D.Y. Patil Grounds in March 2012.

Again, the opening act for the JAL during their India Tour at St. Stanislaus Grounds, Bandra in April, 2012. Wajood was on Radio Mirchi 98.3FM, with RJ Jeeturaaj as the opening band for the 'Klub Mirchi' Season 2 - which got them a definite fan

following among the Mumbai crowd.

They believe in playing for the audience, whether 30 or 300. Numbers do not really matter to them - as long as they know that the crowd enjoys their music.

They go on to tell me an anecdote of a fan from Pakistan, who actually liked their music and sent them a message on their Facebook page. This was really very encouraging for them, and made them realize that they just went International with their fans!

Talking to them more about their music and audience, I am interrupted by Sharukh Makani, their Bassist - who is sprightly and looking to prove- a-point.

He says, “Indian audiences are mostly inclined towards Western music. No doubt, they produce some great music - but they do not realize what they are missing out on, when they take Indian bands lightly!”

He further adds, “Apart from Parikrama, Indian Ocean, Strings and Euphoria there have hardly been any other Indian bands playing Hindi songs that have come to the forefront.”

Witnessing the energy that the band displayed during our chat, I know that they will definitely be successful in proving their point to the Indian audiences in the years to come with their music.

Asking them the usual question that they so often have been asked, about where they see themselves five years from now, Lead Guitarist Sahil Sharma chuckles - saying, “I think the most ideal response would be to see ourselves touring the world.” To which Mohit adds, “Mostly looking forward to performing in Dubai, London and parts of the United States of America.”Their originals ‘Yaad’ which is their flagship song - and ‘Raat’ being the other, can be listened to on Sound Cloud.

They have received widespread recognition for them - and the other covers that they have performed at various college events in the city.

Bambai Street Collective If you’re walking down Carter Road on a Sunday evening and happen to pass TattooStar Studio, you will notice a group of musicians jamming on the sidewalk. Yes, they indeed play some lovely music and well, I can guarantee that you will stop to take a look and pause a while to listen to the music they play. They are called Bambai Street Collective. A group of like minded artists who perform every Sunday from 5:30 to 8pm. They use a variety of instruments ranging from acoustic guitars, electric guitars, bongo’s, flutes, djembes and drums. Their motto, music doesn’t have to be made in a studio or recording room, it has to be from your heart; from within. A mix of cultures and sounds, they collaborate excellently.

Nikhil Thakur, co founder of BSC, says, they music we play is for the people. We enjoy getting together as a group of friends and jamming outdoors. This gives every person a chance to prove them-

selves and discover their talent. They play a variety of music with changing tempo’s and everything falls into sync. Bambai Street Collective plays in an area that is accessible to the people-the streets and they enjoy seeing a large crowd gather and listen to them play. This congregation of spirited artists manages to deliver some great music. Nikhil says, when you’re with your friends jamming up, it’s one of the happiest moments and you always play your best. Music doesn’t have to be in-house, you can get out on the streets and prove yourself because they streets are the best way to prove yourself. Bambai Street Collective haven’t gone professional as of now but they have been playing every Sunday for the past 8 weeks. The Musical Keys of Nadine Jo Crasto Bandra’s very own Nadine Jo Crasto is currently one of Bandra’s finest musicians and truly a rare talent; as she has already achieved so much at a very young age. At the age of 21, Nadine’s Musical journey keeps getting better and better.

Nadine recently got accepted into to The Royal Academy of Music in London, which is one of the top 10 music colleges in the world for a 2 year post graduate course in music. But it hasn’t been a cake walk for her, as hard work and practice from a very young age for 4 to 6 hours a day has got her to where she is today.

Nadine first started learning the piano at the age of 9 under the tutelage of Myrna Fernandes. She then went on to complete her LTCL in 2009 at the age of 17. She also received two awards for the ATCL Examination, having achieved the highest marks in Mumbai. Nadine also participated in the All-India Music Quest Competition, achieving gold seals and winning first place in the jazz and popular music section in 2011. She recently gave a piano recital at the NCPA “Stop Gaps Young Talent” which received much acclaim. She has also accompanied Mezzo Soprano Viola Martins and given solo performances at her concert tour of Mumbai, Goa and Ahmedabad.

When asked, if not for music what else would she be doing, She says, “I haven’t really thought about anything else - but music. Ever since I first laid my fingers on the piano, I just knew that this

sister playing the piano, which got me fascinated with the piano - and how amazing an instrument it is. So I just had to learn.

What genre of music you listen too?

I love listening to Classical and Jazz What are your other hobbies besides playing music?

Well, I cook, I’m into art and craft, I love reading and I like attending live performances/Gigs/Concerts.

Nadine has trained, conducted and done vocal arrangements for choirs and prepared them for competitions and performances since the age of 16.

Currently, Nadine teaches music in various schools and gives private piano lessons and prepares students for music exams, competitions and performances, many of whom have already achieved distinctions and won prizes. Nadine has been teaching for about 5 years - and she

says it gives her more joy teaching kids than performing. Nadine also owes a lot to the Bandra Zonals, held every year which has not only taught her how to be a good performer, but also given her the platform to sing, accompany and conduct.

I managed to get up-close and personal with Nadine - and asked her a few questions. Here’s what she had to say: What made you learn the piano?

It all started with the Violin. I started playing the violin at the age of 6 - and at the same time I used to listen to my elder

Is it important to be motivated and encouraged when you’re into a profession like music?

Yes of course, I’ve always had family support that have always encouraged and motivated me. I expect the same with my students and whoever out there who want to take up music as a profession.

Family support and encouragement plays a huge role.

3 qualities a Music teacher should possess and what advice would you like to give aspiring musicians?

Well, every music teacher should possess the qualities of patience, dedication and commitment and my advice would be to say committed and dedicated to whatever instrument you play and let your music bring out your personality.

What initiated you to the hospitality business?

It has been a part of our family lineage.

They owned a family lunch home where my grandmother used to cook and my father and uncle would serve and help out.

In 1960s, they started their first restau-

rant and made a beginning. I was just 24 years old when I started a restaurant of my own called Kocum Curry. A few years later, Corniche- At the Waterfront happened.

What was your vision behind opening Corniche?

Corniche was my own baby, so I took a keen interest in everything to do with it. I wanted to give it a Mediterranean look.

Even the interiors; white and turquoise was a conscious decision keeping the feel of the place in mind. A place that caters to everyone, a place where you can meet clients to discuss business, being your family and come with your friends to chill.

This was also one of the reasons to offer a multi cuisine menu so there is some-

an opportunity to interact with likeminded people. We’ve also just start Sunday Sundowns with great music, drinks and food. Also, we offer Happy Hours every weekday from 4PM to 7PM. With this business running through generations, do you see your children carrying on the lineage?

They’re too young right now! But it’ll be great if they grow up to be as passionate about it as I have been. But of course, I’ll support them in the career option that they believe in.

What makes Bandra special for you?

It’s the place to be. My restaurant is here, I chill with my friends here; I’m just so used to this place. If you’re in Bandra, you have the best of everyone, one doesn’t need to go out anywhere.

What generated your interest in Yoga?

Did you always know that Yoga was your calling?

I have been a national level swimmer as a kid. Fitness has always been my priority. I am also a Commercial Pilot License holder – Flying for me was like attaining Nirvana – I had never felt so exhilarated & detached at that moment amongst the clouds ever before. I didn't know yoga was my calling back then, but as I started to learn yoga, it had a profound, an almost magnetic pull over me and I felt more and more drawn to learn and experience all what yoga has to offer and this was the same way my soul felt when I was flying only this time I didn’t need to be in the air. It does not only focus on external physical appearances but also on the internal body. Yoga is an internal Spa for your mind & soul and has been around for thousands of years and it will continue to be here long after.

How fit are the people in Bandra? Do you think Bandraites take to Yoga well?

People in Bandra are becoming increasingly fitness conscious. Gyms are most people's first option but after a while it tends to get boring and monotonous. I know so many people who follow this exact route and stumble upon yoga.

After that of course there is no turning back.

I think everyone takes to yoga well.

It is about finding your niche. Because the scope of yoga is so vast, it is imperative to have the right trainer to guide you so you can find what suits you best. A good teacher can design your yoga class to specifically what you need and the benefits you feel are instantaneous.

Your suggestions for people who want to do yoga or first timers at Yoga.

Just get into it. Try to establish a deeper connection with it than just the physical level. View it as your friend, your go to stress relieving reliable friend. Cultivate a loving, safe and healthy relationship with the practice for a healthy future.

BJP organises massive muslim minority rally On Sunday, 2nd June 2013, the Transit Camp at Bandra Reclamation witnessed a massive Muslim Minority Rally and Awareness Programme, organized by the BJP (Bandra West – Vidhan Sabha).

Over 1000 people from BandraKhar-SantaCruz, came to listen to MLC Adv. Ashish Shelar speak on various burning local issues that affected minorities.

The first issue that Ashish spoke about, was the matter of Muslim Kabrastan (grave yard). He said that inspite of the local area MP, MLA & local MC’s being Congress, there are not enough public Kabrastans in the Bandra-Khar-SantaCruz area for the growing Muslim population. The first visit was to Rewale Engineering, where the company has grown to a turnover of over Rs 850 crores from humble beginnings under the leadership of Mr. Rewale, who came from a simple background - and without any formal education.

The next visit was to Autoline Industries. In his presentation, Mr. M. Radhakrishnan - Deputy Managing Director stated that the company began it s operations on a humble scale in the year 1995. In the year 1996, the company recorded a turnover of a mere Rs 11 lakhs - with only 7 employees and in an area admeasuring just 500 square feet. Today, the company has a turnover of over Rs 800 crores, over 4000 employees and 11 manufacturing facilities, spread all over India and abroad. Bandra's Babies! The In-Dog and The In-Cat The adoption of the Indian breed dog or cat is getting popular by the day. Compassion to these homeless beings is the new trend! Here are some awesome stories of how some of our Bandra based residents found love in Indian rescued pets.

Animal lovers tell us, "Indian breed pups and kittens are easy to care for and are low maintenance. They are accustomed to our climate and hence do not smell and also do not come with any genetic ailments. They are sturdier than breeds and with awareness, many are now adopting Indian animals into their homes."

Ritu, Nilesh and Kitty, Tiny and Chintu Ritu and her husband Nilesh Sardesai live in Bandra - and were not cat-people to begin with. On a rainy day, watching a movie playing loud on their home-theatre, Nilesh thought he heard loud mews of a kitten in distress. He peeped out of the window and noticed a little kitten trying to cross the busy street, howling in distress at the same time. Ritu rushed with a towel and picked up the little kitten, bringing her home and naming her "Kitty". Kitty was drenched, exhausted and hungry. After wiping her dry and feeding her, they put her back in the building compound; where they assumed her mother would be. Nilesh felt they couldn't keep her home, as they believed they were not cat-people at all - and would not be able to adjust with one at home.

Within 20-minutes, Nilesh changed his mind, rushed out and got the kitten back home, announcing she will stay. To give her company, Ritu and Nilesh later adopted a little kitten named Tiny from the NGO-‘World For All’, who is now best friends with Kitty. They also adopted another kitten named Chintu - and feed and care for other cats in their building premises.

Ritu Kumar Sardesai is the owner of “O Layla” stores in Delhi and Goa. She is a Bandra-based fashion stylist and also the designer for the in-house label O LAYLA. Chris with Puddles and Donny Chris Mendes and his family live both in Bandra and in the US. They have always had dogs throughout their life.

Recently, Chris’s dog a 3 legged hound in the US passed away - and Chris was keen on giving another homeless dog a home. He decided to adopt an Indian breed.

Chris called in at NGO ‘World For All’ and discussed the

same. He was informed about a 3-legged dog named Donny, rescued by ‘Save Our Strays’ - a Bandra based NGO. Donny was rescued when he was 3 months old - a vehicle had run over his leg. With complications after his leg was amputated, Donny was fading away, but with intensive treatment and the love and care of a foster home; he was brought back to life. Donny struggled but soon learnt to walk on 3 legs. Chris was ready to take home Donny and also agreed to adopt another pup. He was informed about Puddles, a female Indian dog who was not finding a home in Mumbai. Puddles and her 6 siblings were tick-infested, malnourished pups abandoned in a carton at JVLR and rescued by NGO – ‘World For All’. While all siblings got adopted, Puddles wasn’t finding a home. Soon with the news of a possible home in the US, Puddles was sent to live with Donny at his foster and the two became good friends. All formalities were completed by the two NGOs and then Chris came down to Mumbai to take the two pups back with him to New York. “It is my gain, more than theirs” commented Chris.

Sanam and Shylo One evening, Sanam got a call to foster a little 30 day old pup, who was rescued by a friend. Shylo came wrapped in towels in a grocery basket, covered with fleas, burn marks - and she was extremely malnourished. She immediately decided to foster the little one and bring her back to health. Shylo was detected with Gastro, which can be lethal in puppies.

Miraculously after 10 days of drips and medication and a near-death experience, Shylo came back to life.

For 2 months, Sanam put her heart and soul into trying to find a good home for her, and finally found a suitable adopter for her. At the adopter’s home, Sanam realized she wouldn’t be able to spend a minute of her life without Shylo - and in that split second, she apologized to the family, picked her up and left their house and decided Shylo would stay with her forever.

“Today Shylo is a year and a half, and I can proudly say she is “My Life”. I can’t imagine a day without her by my side. This Happiness & Love we can only get from our Animals. Deciding to adopt a little homeless puppy has given me a lifetime full of Happiness & Beautiful Memories with my Girl”, says Sanam.

Snoozy Sunday back with a splash Necessity is the mother of invention. In our case, a house party is where it all began. During one of the house parties on our way back home, my friend and I were exchanging ideas on what more we could possibly do in life. At that time both of us were already working. She was working in an advertising agency and I was (still am) running a small PR company. One thing common between both of us: our incessant need to shop.

We wanted to start a concept where you could shop how much every you want without drilling a fashionable hole in you pocket. Sip on some margarita or wine or in our case beer. Get your better half too for we didn’t want to restrict it

to an all woman affair. Sundays are boring if spent alone.

Snoozy Sunday came into the picture. We were working on a very stringent budget and made a total of 5 media invitations. Yes, we made them from scratch with our own hands and a few borrowed ones from our artistic friends.

The logo was designed by a few cousins. Everyone improvised on everything. And we were all set to launch Snoozy Sunday – Shop. Sip. Splurge at Lagerbay, Bandra on February 24. We expected our immediate family and friends to come and support us. We were wrong. Everyone we knew,

right from old school friends and distant relatives to barely kept in touch with friends, came along to support us.

The response and turnout was overwhelming. We couldn’t have asked for a better beginning.

Proud smiles and pats on the back were the signs from the universe that we were incredibly lucky and blessed.

We took this upon ourselves to come back bigger and better. Snoozy Sunday came back for its round 2 on June 9th at Shockk, Linking Road with 33 participants (we had 11 at our first one) However this time the rains decided to join us too. We were prepared for light shower or a drop here and there.

We were hardly prepared for the big mighty rain. We were almost prepared for low turnout, what with water logging and traffic jams. But as I mentioned earlier, universe had blessed us.

People started pouring in drenched and soaked. They kept their umbrellas aside and happily shopped. Some even

bought a pair of fresh clothes. They drank , indulged in some mouth watering cupcakes and cookies, and treated themselves to hand and foot massage or took a sneak peek into their future with tarot readings. It was a good day.

Someone wise advised to save for a rainy day. Well, we literally did. We saved the best of clothes, shoes, bags, accessories, décor, art, gifting ideas, stationary et al for all those who made it to Snoozy Sunday Round 2.

We will be coming back for our third one very soon.

Pet care during monsoon

Its that time of the year again, where the only thing that is appreciated are the 'garam chai and bhajiya combos' that you will see even the weight watchers feasting on. Where raindrops look better on roses than your new white blazer. The rains cause messy roads which in turn cause dirty clothes, mucky shoes, perpetual bad-hair days, water logged mobiles and a whole lot more.

But that is nothing you haven't already experienced living in our lovely city, even though the temperatures have dipped which is quite the respite from the hot - hot summer we had last month this weather still leaves us with a lot to complain about.

Here are a few handy tips to keep you stylish and trendy through out these torturous rains. I'd obviously advise you to keep it short as its much easier to dry your legs off rather than trying to save your clothes from getting wet and muddy. But not all occasions will allow you to, so make sure you wear trousers etc. made of fabric that will dry easily. Polyester and nylons dry quicker than cotton and would definitely be the better bet for this season.

Shelve your denims and opt for denim printed leggings instead that will be super quick to dry and keep your woes at bay.

Try and stay away from white and

While the showers are a welcome break from the soaring temperatures, the season sometimes turns out to be a problem for pets. Be it your dogs and cats or fish and birds, monsoon is the time when they are often affected with skin infections, digestive disorders, and a host of other health problems. Humidity is high in the air so the fur starts smelling badly. Foot pads of dogs and cats are wet when they come back from their walks. It is important to clean their paws thoroughly and for dogs with long hair i would strongly suggest to even blow-dry their coat. It is also important to clean in between their paws to avoid fungal infections. Ticks and fleas tend to attack pets more during the monsoon causing allergies and fever. Treat your pets regularly with worm medicines and use spot on medicines regularly to avoid further infestation.

Be careful what you feed your pet Contamination of food and water is possible in monsoon. Contaminated food can result in food poisoning ad serious gastroenteritis in pets; it is therefore advisable to provide only clean safe drinking water, cooked home food or manufactured pet food that is reputed.

Overweight dogs are more likely to suffer injury and illness, so make sure you

Earthy colours like mocha brown, olive green, charcoal grey or pretty plum and aubergine shades will go well with the season's dual weather of rain and shine. And you can always add in more colour while accessorizing. Rain boots seem to be the most fun to wear and you can get them in different colours and prints. Its also the best way to keep your toes clean. But if you prefer, the stores are stocked with all sorts of styles of rainy footwear with peep toes or straps that promise to keep your feet fashion forward all through the season.

If you will be commuting a lot in this weather you must invest in a trendy rainproof jacket that you can throw over any outfit. Large shoulder bags in easy to clean material will help house your umbrella and rain coat to save you from those unexpected outbursts from the sky above.

As long as you can stay dry I'm sure you will start to enjoy the monsoon and the roasted corn with chilly and lime as you watch the waves lash out from the waterfront.

Don't let the monsoons weigh down on your wardrobe; keep it chic and easy as you cruise through the puddles around!
