Carter Road could soon have a sandy beach We at Bandra Buzz caught up with our Corporator, Asif Zakaria, in his office to learn about an exciting, new development called The Carter Road Beach Project. It is something that the residents of Bandra will appreciate as well as visitors from around.

What is the Carter Road Beach project all about?

It’s a very small project. You know, Bandra doesn’t have any sandy beach; there’s the Chimbai beach but that has a lot of dirt and filth and isn’t too clean. Besides that, we don’t have any other sandy beach except for Carter road; behind the Amphitheatre there is a small section of sandy beach.

Fishermen use it to park their boats in the monsoons. That being said, I had submitted a proposal to the corporation so that maybe we could put it to more use, for the public at large. The amphitheatre and the Carter Road Promenade are frequented by a lot of people, every day. What we’ve planned, is to provide some basic spot facilities for kids where we are installing solar lights & I have already got sanction for it and the work will start very soon.

Besides that, we intend to have Beach Volleyball where we put up the poles and youngsters or kids come with their own nets and play games. We are also planning on having Beach Cricket where we will put up a mat and people can bring in their own stumps and play. Sand pits are also planned for small kids. So it’s a very simple plan which I have proposed to the corporation and also submitted a plan to have a movable stand so that people who come there or students, can sit and watch the game. I have submitted the proposal to the corporation, the commissioner as well and I am hopeful that in the coming days we should get a sanction and we should be able to start this project. What is the target area on which the Beach Project will be constructed?

Basically it is a very small, sandy beach

which is exactly behind the Amphitheatre.

That is the only part that contains sand and no rocks. It is clean, but you know there are a lot of stones and garbage and a lot of debris. We will clean that once and for all and will try to put it to use. Once residents start using it and the sporting facilities, then

maintaining it becomes easier since it comes to the public eye. If we are able to use it consciously, maintenance will be much easier.

Carter Road could soon have a sandy beach Isn’t the Carter Road Beach project especially targeted at the youth and kids?

Definitely! Beach Volleyball is something that kids could play, college students could play and even residents can play. I have been told that at Juhu Beach a lot of people play Beach Volleyball, this is a new trend that is coming up and it’s good and it’s one more sporting facility that we are providing. If we can optimize the results with the limited infrastructure that we have, then it’s a good thing.

I have even submitted a proposal for creating a cycling track on Carter road. The Joint Commissioner of Police was also quite excited about it and was like ‘Let’s do it’. But he had a valid point, you know by doing that we would have to compromise on parking. A lot of people come there including senior citizens. Where will they park? That is a valid point. So then, he put forward an idea which I liked, he said, “Why don’t we try making a cycling track only on one side of the promenade for starters? Just make a cycling track at the side of the promenade so that there will be a clean stretch of almost 2.4 kilometres (1200 metres going & 1200 metres coming).” So we intend to have a cycling track on one side of the road and for that we’ve had a couple of joint meetings with the local traffic police and are waiting for the sanction from them so that the BMC can implement it.

It’s a very simple plan and we are not doing anything fixed. So tomorrow, if the plan fails or there’s any issue of parking then what we can do is put up the barricades that the RTO has & have a thorough paint job on the last leg of the cut touching the promenade wall. This is the one cycling track that we intend on doing, also, a thorough paint job along with some boards and cycling signs. If it kicks off and people have fun and enjoy cycling there, then there will be demand & we will have it on both sides.

Is the Carter Road Beach project your brainchild?

Well, a lot of residents have wanted a cycling track. The Bandra West Residents Association who maintains the promenade were very keen and even in the past we

Cycling is catching up big time; there are a lot of cyclists in Bandra, with groups such as the Bandra Cycle Club and Pro9. We have a lot of cycling groups who promote cycling to work. A lot of these cycling groups wanted me to try & do something for cycling in Bandra.

I met Darryl Abraham of Abraham John Projects, the Urban Planner along with a group of architects, who are all from Bandra and they want to do work for the betterment of Bandra. They are not charging us and are willing to do it free of cost. I appreciate what they are doing. The idea is to

try and do it on Carter road and if it works fine, then we can replicate it on Bandstand.

I will be using my corporation fund for this project as I am the Councillor of ward no 95. I have submitted the proposal to the commissioner and even he felt that it’s a good proposal and that we should go ahead with it. As far as the cycling track is concerned, we need the traffic police on board.

We have had a couple of joint meetings and we are waiting for their NOC, once that comes we will go ahead.

The Carter Road Beach Project is going to be open for people from all age groups and even for all the citizens of Mumbai.

They just have to come with their nets and

stumps for their respective sport.

What message would you like to give to the readers of Bandra Buzz?

My message to the youngsters would be, “Please participate and take interest in issues concerning your road, work with the administration and with the councillor, highlight issues of your areas as you all know the issues better than anybody else.

With the help of the local residents, especially the youth and the councillor we can make our roads, our areas and our Bandra a better place to live!”

DANGER SPOT Wrong-side Driving becoming the norm to refill petrol at the HP Petrol Pump on Turner Road

An Audi breaks the traffic rule by entering the HP Petrol Pump on Turner Road from the wrong side (official exit) All Bandraites (at least the pedestrians if not the vehicled-ones who break the traffic rules), will appreciate this. Many of our readers have called in and requested us to take up this issue, as they have been nearvictims of what could have been tragic mishaps.

The ‘Danger Point’ referred to in the header is the HP petrol pump at the signal of the S.V. Road and Linking Road junction, a very central spot in Bandra (West), where five roads fork at the signal. The petrol pump stands on a corner plot at this signal

between the road coming from South Mumbai (from Bandra Talao) and Turner Road (leading towards Carter Road).

The only official entrance for vehicles into this pump is on the road coming from South Mumbai, wherein vehicles need to rightfully enter to get petrol/diesel filled.

Once filled, the exit for these vehicles is on the Turner Road side of the pump, whereby vehicles need to exit the pump premises.

The above is the correct entry and exit procedure. But some vehicle-drivers who

are in a hurry, or who have made it a bad habit, prefer to take short-cuts and make their own rules. Many vehicles coming FROM Turner Road, who would otherwise have to get on to the road coming from South Mumbai to enter the pump, PREFER TO ENTER THE PUMP FROM THE EXIT OF THE PUMP ON TURNER ROAD. They do this by driving on the wrong side of the divider on the road and then entering the pump from what is official the exit.

Naturally this is extremely dangerous for pedestrians walking on that stretch of

the road near the pump’s exit, as they would not expect a vehicle to come from BEHIND them from the wrong side. It is also very dangerous for those vehicles exiting the pump or those vehicles taking the left turn from the South Mumbai road to come on to Turner Road, as none of them would be expecting a vehicle to be coming at them from the wrong side of the road.

Rash driving and immoral activities occurring in the by lanes that connect Carter road to Sherly Rajan

Meant for public recreation, the stretch of Carter Road has of late become a paradise for some miscreant youngsters.

Crossing the road is no less than a nightmare for the residents. Since bikers at times do not even respect the zebra crossing, thus risking many a lives. Many a resident of the area visit the promenade every evening to enjoy fresh air or their walks.

However, some youngsters rather than riding carefully, perform wheelies on their two wheelers and speed away thus scaring the bystanders and kids, and totally unmindful that such playful acts can endanger lives. Besides, many young girls are afraid of visiting Carter road due to a number of youths occupying the entrance to Sherly Rajan gaothan & making them feel uncomfortable by their constant stare.

A senior citizen and resident of Oceanic building said, “Noise factor is the biggest nuisance for us. They have races at midnight especially on weekends. There are youngsters who have drinks in the lane and then fling their bottles in the building.

Some travel on the wrong side and others have double parking which creates a huge commotion. Despite the commissioner of police office being located on the same road there are police officers who get entertained by these miscreants.”

Another resident, Mr. Savio Miranda said, “When there’s a police blockade on the main road, the bikers enter the narrow winding lanes of the village. This is a residential area. There’s a promenade for the visitors of Carter Road.”

Another resident from Seep building said, “We have made several complaints in

the past about the nuisance on the road.

We have written to the police through Stephen Noronha and the local corporator Asif Zakaria. But there has been no difference. Bikes and cars are parked on the entrance of the lane which makes it difficult to get our vehicles inside. And when confronted, these youngsters don’t budge.”

She also added that, “Quarrels breakout between them. Abuses are hurled. So much so that some residents have inserted sound proof windows because it’s very disturbing. Specially late in the night when the voices amplify.”

Stephen Noronha, Block President of Congress said, “When the residents enter the village or their buildings, there are people standing and blocking the road. When the residents ask them to move they defy them. A signature campaign was held on 4th April 2016 in Rizvi complex, Sherly & Rajan gaothan to fight against these issues.”

Asif Zakaria, the corporator of H-west ward said, “I have received several complaints from the residents of Sherly and Rajan village. Regarding rash driving and cases of illicit and immoral activities occurring in the by lanes that connect Carter road to Sherly and Rajan. We met the senior officer of Khar police station regarding this. So they have promised to look into the matter.”

He also added, “They also said that they will deploy a constable whom the residents can get in contact with.”

Inspector Ramchandra Yadav wasn’t available for comment.

BWFA 2016 kicks off from 26th June

The Bandra West Football League 2016 will kick off at the Dr. Norman Lewis Supari Talao Municipal Grounds from 7.30am on 26th June 2016. This tournament is being conducted by the Bandra West Football Association, under the auspices of the Mumbai District Football Association.

Matches will be played on Sundays only – with the Finals scheduled for August 28th.

The Men - Premier and Division 1; Boys under 14 and Veterans Leagues will be for residents of Bandra West only; while the Women League will comprise of the top Mumbai teams.

Renowned Seamstress passes away Mrs. Jessie D’Abreo from New Kantwadi, off Perry Road, Bandra, who along with her talented son O’Neil – have been responsible for world-class wedding gowns (in fact the entire bridal requirements, along with other accessories), First Holy Communion outfits, etc. for several decades. Generations have relied on their expertise to give their lifetime events that special touch of class. Many of their creations have been air-lifted worldwide, to grace special occasions.

This mother-son team was unique.

Gavin Aguiar, her relative, gave us an insight of how she was as a person, “May her soul rest in peace. Aunty Jessie was a wonderful human being. A person loved by everyone. I will never forget the times I’ve spent with her as a child.”

On 2nd June, Jessie passed away peacefully, while holidaying in Goa. The funeral mass on 4th June, 5pm at St. Andrew’s Church was packed to capacity, with family and friends – many who came

from faraway places to pay their last tributes to someone who was part of their lives, in a lot of ways.

13 year old creates awareness on water conservation in her neighborhood Water is a limited resource. What each of us does in the world, how we live, does make a difference. The Earth’s water supply is fixed: no new water is being made. The existing water supply is continuously recycled. We need to learn the value of clean, safe water and how scarce it truly is, so that we can take steps to protect it and to get it to people who lack access today. Conserving water will help to ensure an adequate supply of usable water for ourselves and for future generations.

They say kids say the darndest things, well 13 year old Ariyana Shah had something really interesting to say. In an essay she wrote for a school assignment, she goes on to elaborate on why water is so precious and why we need to conserve it. Not only that she is determined on creating an awareness in her building and few neighboring buildings and has also written the below short article for the members of the Otters Club since she wants to spread the importance of conservation of water to members.

Her goal was to create awareness and make an impact and her essay has done just that! Her friends have n o w started timing their s h o wers so as to n o t use ex-

cess water. She is also not afraid to point out and pull up someone for wasting water.

Being so young she has decided to spread her message near and far in the hope that people realize how precious and scares water really is. This will help our future generations become more conscious about the environment & become accustom to a sustainable lifestyle. Proving this foundation will make them responsible for their actions and any impact on the environment they may cause while transitioning from children to teenagers and then finally adulthood.

Ariyana’s message to residents I had been reading about the water issues in our State lately and had given a small notice to each flat member in my building with a few easy suggestions on how they could save water in their homes. Since water shortage and conservation is a matter which affects us all, I wanted to share the pointers with you so that we can each make a difference. Simple ways in which we can save water in our homes: • Take a second to completely turn off the tap in the bathroom or kitchen because each drop counts.

• Try to take shorter showers. We have started having bucket baths so we use less water. If you have a shower bath, turn the water off when washing your hair.

• All of us have the fanciest of showers with high-pressure modes which use a lot of water. We aren’t saying stop the usage completely, but we could start of by using those modes on the shower head with lesser pressure.

• Cars can be washed every alternate day instead of everyday.

• If the toilet flush handle gets stuck and water runs constantly, please have it fixed.

• Use the washing machine only when it has a completely full load and only when necessary. Dishwashers also use a lot of water so use only if necessary.

• Every drop counts so don’t leave the tap on while brushing your teeth or washing your hands or dishes etc. Please do inform your kitchen staff regarding this as well.

• Avoid thinking that no damage will be done if I use just a little extra water, imagine everyone in India having the same thought & how much water it can cost us!

Every evening when I am at Otters club, I wonder how much water usage happens here. I then jotted down a few points which I feel would make a difference in my point

of view for the club.

• Something we all have noticed at some point is that some kids and adults as well (!!) take really long showers at the club and don’t realize how much water they are wasting. If we suggest, via a notice posted on each shower door, a time cap on how long one should take in the shower, it would definitely create awareness.

• Check all taps and shower heads for leaks.

• Members should use lesser towels in the gym and in the bathrooms, thereby reducing the number of towels to be washed daily and reducing water wastage.

• The house keeping staff of the club should be instructed to use water selectively while cleaning.

• The club should consider water harvesting.

• There should be a bucket next to every water filter with a notice to pour any excess water from their cups into that bin and this water can be used to water plants.

• Create awareness with the kitchen staff regarding water usage.

• Water should be served in the restaurants only on request. We can have a little notice on each table mentioning the same.

• Put up small notes at strategic places in the club saying save water. The message hits home when you see it more often.

• Encourage members to inform the front desk if they see wastage of water or if they have suggestions to cut down water usage.

• We could also involve the children and ask them to write in a few lines for the Otterite on how they helped save water in their homes. This way they can be our little ambassadors to spread the word. I recollect reading somewhere; man can survive without food for 30 days but without water for only 3. I hope you can all contribute to this in your own way. Hopefully our little personal efforts can make a huge difference TOGETHER.

She began her treatment in Tata Hospital, under the guidance of Dr. Anil D’cruz and a specialized team of doctors. Her biggest asset though, was getting to know Luke Coutinho, a well-known Holistic Nutritionist by profession. She smiles and says that it was a spiritual journey. One door may have been closed, God however, opened many other doors and Luke walked in through one of them. As she explains, doctors take care of the medical part of the treatment and the chemotherapy but nutrition is equally important, since the body and organs have to regain their strength and vigor.

Under Luke’s guidance, Jennifer began a speedy recovery. “He has a very holistic attitude towards knocking out a disease”, she says, “People have to pay attention to what they eat.” She noticed, within a month, that Luke’s treatment was having a very positive effect and making her feel much stronger and better. As for her diet, sugars were knocked out completely since cancer cells love sugar. Natural products like chamomile tea, greek yogurt, cold-pressed coconut oil, curcumin, papaya leaf, safa oil, flaxseeds and chia seeds were now part of her diet. A lot of these natural products are now called ‘superfoods’ and are considered to be especially beneficial for one’s health

and well-being as they de-toxify the system. Luke's recently launched book "The Great Indian Diet" helped to educate her in the different classifications of food. Most importantly, she learnt that the body should be kept in an alkaline state as that helps to fight the cancerous cells.

Within three months, Jennifer was back to running her nursery school, Honey Bee. She used to spend her mornings at the school and go for her medical treatment and radiation in the afternoon. Yes, there were repercussions and strain but she dealt with them perfectly as she was following a brilliant diet which gave her the strength and enhanced her process of recovery.

Family played a very important role and as she says, they were her backbone and sup-

port system throughout this entire ordeal.

Her treatment ended in March, this year; and she bade goodbye to the horrible disease with a smile. Jennifer says timings are very important and it is necessary to live a disciplined life. Keeping in mind nutrition, exercise like yoga or going for walks is also crucial as it helps maintain immunity and bodily functions. She says Luke and his team are wonderful and helped her sail smoothly through this battle.

Founded in 1957 St. Catherine’s home is managed by The Welfare Society for Destitute Children, a trust started by Fr. Anthony Elenjimittam. Till date for around 59 years, the home has been imparting education and providing a physical and pyschological home for the kids.

The kids of St. Catherine's Home are quite independent as once they start working, they manage their living on their living. Ravi, a student of the home, is a professional Capoeira trainer today and earns a good living by imparting what he learnt at the home in his childhood. Whereas, another student Satish is working & studying animation as he inculcated an inclination towards drawing and painting at the home.

Various corporates, social workers and teachers have extended their help and support to the home. But, there so many less fortunate kids who are still searching for a home. "We currently have around 200 kids in our inhouse school and around 325 kids in our home at Bandra. We want to reach out to more children and help make better lives," Brother Joseph wishes.

Every year the admission process for St. Catherine's Home takes place on 28th February with regular follow-ups on the 28th of the following months.

Kiddie Carnival at Khar Gymkhana enthrals all An innovative kiddie carnival brought joy to all those present at Khar Gymkhana on 5th June evening. The event started with a Junior Sports Day & Recreation Camp. This was a Khar Gymkhana event - presented by Eager Beavers, one of the fastest growing pre-school chains.

A bright and cheerful puppet show, one of the highlights of the evening saw, children shout with glee. Children were bright eyed to see their favourite characters as naughty puppets and were completely involved in the story. And... their parents were equally involved. Letters to the Editor BJP WASTING MONEY ON USELESS PROJECTS A pamphlet in circulation through newspapers, mentions initiative by BJP in and around Bandra, to improve 42 roads, footpaths, beautification of side strips and reconstruction of storm water drainage. The list does not mention "other" arterial roads which are in worse condition. Why such step motherly treatment to these localities?

Anybody going behind Lucky's or Behrampada will be shocked to know Bandra is called Queen of Suburbs. There are slums in other areas too. First beautify these localities. Develop proper housing.

In Behrampada shanties are six floor high. Demolish and develop. Is the BMC listening? This is urgent. BJP is doing what Cong-NCP did, wasting money on useless projects.

Recently Maharashtra CM cleared development plans for Manori and Gorai to make good picnic spot. Why bother about these enclaves when the locals themselves do not want it? Think about Mumbaikers, struggling with infrastructure falling to pieces, deplorable condition of roads and crumbling old buildings. Focus on these issues to make Mumbaikers feel enlightened.

The Modi government increased petrol and diesel prices for the third time in last one month and put the heavy burden on the common people with raising the service tax to 15% also.

This insensitive government has not even spared the women of the household who already reeling under high prices of dal and vegetables and has dealt a double blow by increasing the cost of non-subsidised LPG cylinder by Rs 21 & commercial cylinder by Rs 37. As per report the ATF fuel for air travel has been hiked by a steep 9.2% making it difficult for families to travel in these summer holidays.

Bhagwan Thadani RISING SLUMS LEADING TO WATER SHORTAGE In view of the court directions, leakages and rampant water thefts, the BMC submitted a proposal to provide water to the slums built post 2000 in Mumbai.

provided water at the enhanced rate of Rs 4.66 per 1,000 litres of water, so that a sizable amount of revenue could be generated.

It has been observed that the Mumbai city has been losing 25 per cent water to leakage & thefts. Mumbai receives 3,650 million litres daily (MLD) as against a growing demand of 4,500 MLD and loses 900 MLD to leakage and theft.

Earlier proposal was rejected not to provide water to post-2000 slums twice, on the ground that it would encourage further encroachment and unauthorized hutments and will give opportunity to create proofs in support of their claim for the house under the slum rehabilitation scheme.

Sushma Kadam POWER TARIFF HIKE After having promised Mumbaikars of uniform power tariff rates earlier in January this year for consumers from low income households consuming up to 500 units of power, the Maharashtra government argued that it cannot have a uniform reduced power tariff rates for those consuming less than 500 units at one go for about 19 lakh consumers consuming between 0 units to 100 units per month.

It may be recalled that the government was forced to take cognizance of the rising electricity bills in Mumbai, especially after Congress vice president Rahul Gandhi in last week of January this year protesting against the high power tariff rates in Mumbai and the government was forced to ask the power distribution companies supplying power in the city to show their power tariff proposals to the state government before submitting them to the Maharashtra Electricity Regulatory Commission (MERC) for approval.

Now the government have taken Uturn and the Minister for Power said that the state government cannot interfere in the tariff proposals decided by the MERC, which is nothing but betrayal of faith. It is high time the Mumbaikar who have been back stabbed by the Fadnavis government should not spare them and reject them in near future elections.

Even as I write this letter to you, there are several strong pressure groups that are conniving; each having their own hidden agenda. They strike at

unsuspecting people, with sophisticated smooth talk, that has a fine line with hypnotism – and rope them in. It is time, we do not take them at face value. It is time we learn to recognize their evil schemes. It is time to react and act - now.

Has Bhamla Foundation succeeded in creating awareness about our Environment?

World Environment Day 2016 – was one of the largest events ever held on Carter Promenade, with a massive crowd of over 8,000 people from all walks of life. There were neighbouring ALM Presidents, environmentalists, activists (including youth), political leader across party lines – on a common platform, celebrities, etc. - who gave their take on ‘saving our environment’ and how important this issue is to everyone. From the sports fraternity, Sachin Tendulkar (Brand Ambassador) expressed his solidarity via a video clip, shown on the giant screens. Their messages were hard hitting and brought about a greater awareness about our environment – and the fact that it is all we have. The event had cycling, skating, dance performances (Shiamak Davar Group), skits (Chaka Chak Bandra) with a message, felicitations, awards, an environment quiz with prizes, etc. Many saplings were given to represent Mother Earth. Most importantly, this event had a common cause – our environment.

Among those who attended were: MLA Ashish Shelar, Dy Mayor Alka Kelkar,

Deepak Sawant, Priya Dutt, Sanjay Dutt, Jacky Shroff, Sanjay Nirupam, Vidya Chavan, Zarine Khan, Raveena Tandon, Majid Memon. Thousands of youth were involved – thus ensuring our future generations have the right thought process.

The event was ably anchored by Meraj Husain and Ruby Bhatia. Meraj’s close interactions with most of those who came on stage, gave a personal touch to his comments – and added colour to the event.

ALM heads were felicitated for their great civic initiatives. Awards were presented to activists Madhu Popley, Maria D’Souza and Lillian Pais to make Bandra clean and green, with a fanfare. Madhu responded by thanking BMC’s H-Ward AMC Sharad Ughade for his superb support.

The response was very good, but many knowledgeable entrants got stuck in some tricky options. The five winners (lucky draw at the event) from the eleven all-correct entries are: Sagar Rathi, Raymo Pereira, David Cardoz, Sheila Pereira & Maxwell Mascarenhas. Congratulations! The other all-correct entries were: Ethen Costa, Marianne Karmarkar, Kenneth D’Souza, Leslie Almeida, Laurelle Dias & Sabrina Young.

The main messages at this event were: Activist Shyama Kulkarni: “I was very happy to see youth groups like ‘Chaka Chak Bandra’ and ‘Swachhalay’ perform.

We need to affirm that the child is the father of man – they’re teaching us how to keep our area clean. Let’s acknowledge two people who have helped keep Bandra East clean – the Station Master Mr. Dennis Gonsalves and the H-East Ward Officer Mr. Gaikwad. I would like to especially point out to MP Ms Poonam Mahajan that Bandra West Railway Station (which is in her constituency) is relatively well maintained since it is a heritage structure – while Bandra East needs a lot of cleaning up. So, Madam please look into this.

My message to MLA Adv Ashish Shelar – Please have a bio-gas plant in your ward, so that waste is de-centralised. My message to Minister of State for Power, Shri Piyush Goyal – is to help us convert our waste into electricity, so that our nation goes forward.”

Activist Darryl D’Monte: “We have recently formed the Apna Mumbai Abhiyan – where 37 organizations from the southernmost tip of Mumbai, which is Cuffe Parade; to the northernmost part of Mumbai, which is Dahisar; have come together. We have three demands. One is to scrap the proposed coastal road. The second is to make Metro 2 – which is from Kandivali to

Bandra to Mankhurd, underground – and not over ground. Thirdly, is to see that Aarey Colony does not get a Metro Depot.

We (thousands are in this Abhhiyan) make this appeal to everybody and hope that we who look after this promenade – the Bandra West Residents Association is specially concerned that the coastal road is coming only two hundred yards from where we are sitting & in between will be reclaimed. So, we are talking about a World Environment Day – but I am afraid that politicians and bureaucrats are going ahead and building this road. I appeal to please keep our coast clean and accessible to all.”

MP Poonam Mahajan: “I welcome Shri Piyush Goyal & thank Bhamla Foundation for having me here. Thanks Mr. D’Monte for your suggestions – we will fight together for the people of Bandra & Mumbai. Shyama aunty, you’ve always asked me questions on stage. H-West Ward has a wonderful AMC in Mr. Sharad Ughade.

I love working with such people.

Our local youth activists: Chaka Chak Bandra and Swachhalay are doing great work here.

Swachhalay has been recognized at the PM’s office & is being tweeted. Arsh Mogre joined us when he was 14 yers. He & his team’s effort are simple superb.

Aunty Shyama, regarding your remarks on Bandra East – I’ve just come from there. In Kurla, we’ve started a zerogarbage project in small ‘zopadpattis’, where garbage is being converted to compost. However, it is difficult. In Bandra you are lucky – as you have literate & committed people here.

As per our PM’s dream, we plan to do a thousand Ghar Ghar Swachhalays in Bandra East in the coming months. As your elected represented, we’re working 24x7 towards this for a better today that leads to a best tomorrow.”

ENVIRONMENT Keynote speech by Minister for Power Piyush Goyal: “I thank the Bhamla Foundation for this outstanding initiative to create awareness about our environment and the impact it has on our lives. I am glad that you’ve been able to bring so many youngsters here. This platform across party lines is incredible.

Poonam is one of the youngest & finest MP’s - and is really working hard. She is focused on the outcomes of her good works.

While we are all working towards a corruption-free India, I’ve learned three lessons: - First - There is no free lunch. I’ve got a list of demands and will look into them. However, one demand can be acknowledged and left behind as a presentation for Poonamji. I’ll be happy to take up the Bandra East Railway Station (an applause from Shyama) as a CSR of NTPC; who will take it up as rehab with co-ordination by Poonam.

So, Poonam please work it out with the officials and see that the bad politicians and

BANDRA BUZZ bad bureaucrats work together. By and large we tend to criticize politicians and bureaucrats, all our lives. Now, let’s all work together in the spirit of Team India. Let’s not talk about failure in India – get that cynicism out. Let’s move mountains. With the government subsidy, I see Bandra becoming 100% LED, very soon. Imagine the impact on our environment.

- The second lesson is that there is politics everywhere. We’ve heard the pros and cons of the Coastal Road, Metro underground or over the ground. I think these are relatively small issues and look at the outcome. We should move ahead and look at the bigger picture. Understand the outcomes that are expected. Understand that there will always be some trade-offs between environment issues & development. We still around 30% Indians living in poverty and we need to create job opportunities for them. So we need not be apologetic about this trade off. Even the US used low cost en-

ergy (carbon fuel – fossil based). Till today, the consumption of coal in the US is 7 times what India consumes on a per capita basis. Even today, India consumes as much coal on a per capita basis as the US did in 1865. That’s 150 years ago. So environment issues should transcend all boundaries of politics – it’s about India’s welfare and our future generations.

- The third lesson I’ve learned: Ideally we should not have politicians here on stage now, as people in the audience want some entertainment.

My message is that environment is important, and this government has embarked on the world’s largest renewable energy programme. Sustainable lifestyle should be implemented to fight against climate change. Let’s make it a collective effort. We have not inherited this earth from our ancestors – we are just holding it in trust, for the next generation.”

JUNE 2016 15 Asif Bhamla, Founder President of Bhamla Foundation thanked everyone present for their co-operation and efforts in making this event a grand success. He especially thanked all those working behind the scenes, for making things happen & go smoothly. He promised to take this event to greater heights in the coming years, with much more community involvement.

This was indeed an event to remember.

However, the crux of the matter is: Has Bhamla Foundation succeeded in creating awareness about our environment? Honestly, the answer is both “Yes” and “No”.

No – because we need to have a much more outreach programme to be effective. After all we have a vast country. And... Yes – because this is a great start (considering the assurances and support given by some leaders, at this event) towards creating awareness. After all, all great things, start small!
