Bandra Girls Win Badminton National Championship In India Sports has always been a highlight in Bandra; as Bandra is known to produce some of the top sportsmen and sportswomen who have gone on to represent both state and country at different levels. Bandra’s very own Deanne Rodrigues and Neesha Springett are no different when it comes to proving this fact. Deanne and Neesha recently won ‘The Yes Bank 37th Veterans National Badminton Championship’ held in Mumbai from February 19th to 24th, 2013. The team will now be representing India at the World Senior Badminton Championship at Ankara, Turkey on September 9-14th, 2013. A parishioner from St. Peter’s Parish, Deanne Rodrigues has been playing badminton at club level for a few years now and all the hard work and

dedication to the game has finally paid of. She is often seen practicing and playing at the Bandra Gymkhana Badminton courts and it’s been a sport which has always been her passion and looks forward to playing each and every day after a hard days work. When asked about her success, here’s what Deanne had to say, “Badminton is a great stress buster, it’s been my constant and helped stay healthy and energised. It was early this year when friends prompted me to participate in the All India Nationals for seniors in the 3540 years age group and I thought there’s nothing to lose so why not? I had a torn cartilage for which I had to be operated upon in December 2012 and to win the Nationals within 2 months is a super feeling. I thank and praise God for all mercies as I gear up to represent India

Nisha Springett (left) and Deanne Rodrigues (right)

in Turkey.” At the Championship, Deanne played and won against teams from Tamil Nadu, Andhra Pradesh, Chandigarh, Maharashtra and Uttar Pradesh to name a few. In the process she bagged 2 titles: 1. Winner of the 35+ Women Doubles with Neesha Springett 2. Runners up of the 35+ Mixed Doubles with Vilas Kuvale The Yes Bank website proudly dis-

plays this achievement in the following words - Deanne has only ever competed for her club and this National tournament was her 2nd ever tournament...and she walks away with 2 trophies...Hidden talent in Mumbai. We Hope they make our Country & Bandra proud as both Deanne and Neesha represent India at Turkey for the World Senior Badminton Championship and we wish them all the very best. Dujon Fernandes

Letters to the Editor JAIN MANDIR ROAD REPAIRED IN COAL TAR

After the article, ‘Janta Durbar At Jain Mandir Road’ appeared in the April 2013 issue of BandraBuzz; our Jain Mandir Road got immediately repaired in coal tar – thanks to the efforts of MLC Ashishji & the initiative of BandraBuzz – our favourite local community newspaper. The Pure Block has many disadvantages. During the monsoon, water gets accumulated, resulting in slippery roads that result in people falling down. Also, this is a breeding ground for mosquitoes causing health hazards. Sometimes, pure blocks are removed by anti-social elements or drug addicts; resulting in random holes. This causes accidents to everybody – tripping, spraining and falling with serious injuries. Often, pure blocks are used as weapons during fights. Recently, at National Library Road, a drunken man was hit on his head using a pure block. He was rushed to Bhabha Hospital, where he got seven stitches – and was lucky to survive. Apart from this, if any road repair work is done, because of utilities like electricity, phone or gas pipe line – once the pure blocks are removed; there is great difficulty in placing them back as done originally. This results in an uneven road – like you see in many places of Bandra. Roshan D’Souza After BandraBuzz published the enlightening article, ‘Janta Durbar At Jain Mandir Road in the April 2013 issue, pressure was put by MLC Ashishji and locals from the Jain Mandir-Bazaar Road area on the local Municipal Councillor Tanveer Patel. He then swung into action – and got the entire Jain Mandir Road surface repaired in coal tar. This was done in just 3 days. We are local residents of Jain Mandir Road – and we know that this road is generally used by very heavy vehicles. So, if this road

would have had pure blocks (which comparatively cost cheaper) the blocks would have got dislocated & cracked apart. Also, pure blocks increase the road level – and many shops & houses would get flooded during the monsoon. Hats off to BandraBuzz for spreading local awareness – and giving us correct unbiased news of our wonderful suburb – Bandra. BANDRA CHICKS DON’T SWEAT

Bandra Buzz about not getting tanned or sunburned. It’s about protecting your skin from harsh UV rays of the sun. It could be the thing that saves you from skin cancer – and those wrinkles too (non of us Bandra peeps want those!) 2. Embrace your Inner Bandra Aunty, open that Parasol: While we Bandra Chicks must be Chic at all times, the afternoon is a very good time to be like your aunty. Bring out the umbrellas, use them regularly. If you must be trendy (and yes you must try) use a funky colored ‘brella instead of the boring black ones. Bandra boys, use them umbrellas too. Quote David Beckham’s metrosexuality if you’re given grief. If DB can do it, you can too.

good, so it’ll help you feel better too! We’re blessed to be able to buy cotton clothes relatively cheap in our country, so make sure you make full vasool of your clothes. I’ve made a special pile of 100% cottons to make sure anything I just pull and wear without thinking is completely cotton. Also try wearing lighter colored clothes – this is a tough one for me (I’m eerily drawn to black clothes) but I’m trying. Shoes are important too, try keeping the socks & sneakers to a minimum and opting for sandals/open shoes as often as you can. 5. Go to the Gym & have a drink. Or go anywhere, but make sure you drink lots of water! Your body needs to be rehydrated. The more you sweat, the more you need to drink water. Since I was never one to count how many glasses of water I drink in a day (seriously, who remembers these things?!) I’ve instead perfected a system where I hog my one litre drinking bottle to myself. I drink it completely and make sure I drink at least another two full bottles by refilling & emptying. PS: Regardless of the heading of this point, try stay clear from alcohol (& coffee too). They actually dehydrate you rather than helping. Order a juice at the gym. Remember at all times: Bandra people look hot but we don’t sweat!

Does 'Mother India' need a 'Mother's day'? They say that the essence of every woman comes from being a mother. Those who already are and those who are not, at some point every woman plays the role of a mother in some way or the other. But this May 12, Mothers Day is not only a tribute to conventional mothers but to the lesser celebrated ones too. At our last meeting, my Bandra Buzz friend and I were fondly remembering ''the mothers'' who had lost their children in accidents, natural and forceful disasters. There never will be a 'mothers day' for them. ''They say life goes on but in my eyes there maybe no tragedy greater than 'out living' your own child.'' Also this week, I think of ''''the mothers'' who have to bid a reluctant good bye to their loved ones who are leaving for the war front. With an uncertainty whether they will ever make it back home; they have tied their entire life to a thin thread of hope. We can't even imagine the sleepless nights those moms go through. On this day, we need to look with admiration towards 'mother like figures' of our last generation; nuns who selflessly serve in hospices, women who are single handed taking care of a big family without any fi-

nancial support, those who are nursing strangers or mothering someone else's abandoned parents. The serene face of 'Mother Theresa' comes before me, a lady who was an inspiring institution of her own. Though in India the concept of 'Mothers day' has caught on recently, the west is not that alien to it. It's the day in the West where grown up kids who have not seen their parents since Christmas, grace their mother with a call or a visit. I do not judge the western living module but it does make me wonder how different both cultures are. My acquaintances living there(the non Indian ones) plan months in advance to go to their mothers house for a visit, like a 60th birthday or a thanks giving weekend. For weeks their widowed mothers probably stare at their calendars striking off each date till the next happy occasion. That's precisely why I wonder if we Indians, really need a day to celebrate the lady we have pedestalled for centuries? Even if geographically away, Indian parents talk to their children or get visited far more often than any of their western counterparts. Out there, you will seldom hear of a

grown man putting his head on his mothers lap or licking dal off her soft hands. But it's hardly surprising here as no other culture in the world celebrates a mother in so many forms. Kali, Durga, Laxmi, Jai Ambe, Mother Mary, the concept of mother is as entwined in our system as trees are to mother earth. We even have festivals dedicated to each of these mothers. All our 'Mother Gods' signify compassion, strength, endurance, wealth and prosperity, and what can be more 'Mothers day' than this? Of course there are exceptions every where and this is just a generalization and in India too we have heard of several cases of battered mothers leading a solitary existence. But one can hope that this is in the minority. As Mitch Albom in his best seller One more day wisely quoted... ''Behind all your stories is always your mother's story. Because hers is where yours begin.” Kainaz Jussawalla

BANDRA DAIRIES I spent a better part of the month away from Bandra, in Vancouver. There’s always an excitement about visiting different places, taking in fresh sights and adapting to new cultures; but there is also a sense of insecurity of leaving a place of comfort, a home where you belong. There was one thing I was looking forward to, meeting a dear friend from Bandra who moved to Canada. In fact, it was because of him that I found my love for Bandra! And even with the distance, the time away from his place of birth, he was every bit Bandra. It immediately got me thinking, you are where you come from, you are the people you grow up with and the place you’ve called home for the longest time. Even though you might go where life takes you, meet new people who become your close associates, the foundation of your growing up years stays with you forever. I think this is where I found the Bandra in him. In a foreign environment, you look for familiarity, something that connects you to where you came from. Though you prepare yourself for a fresh outlook, there is a part of you that seeks that little hope that’ll make you feel at home. And this is what my friend was for me. Though the trip was just for a couple of weeks, the beautiful British Columbia awakened all my senses, yet a piece of my heart was left behind in Bandra. And on my return I realized I find calm in the chaos, I revel in the noise, the polluted air lets me breathe clear air into my thoughts, the multitude of people make me feel at home. The countless hours of waiting at traffic signals, the pesky beggars, the bargaining with over priced food vendors, the bumpy rickshaw ride; it is all quite surreal when you look at it from an outsider’s point of view. It is all a matter of perspective, what annoys you one day can become your need on another. The little joys of life exist in accepting where you belong, and ensuring that you play your part in making it better. A place is what people make of it, whether you grew up there or life brought you to it. Each time you pack your baggage, you pack of bit of the place with you, a life that got you where you are, a memory that will stay with you wherever you go. Miles away from home, from family, this is what my friend has kept with him; every day he takes out a bit of Bandra from his luggage and shares it with his new world; bit by bit, piece by piece.

Advantages of visiting a book store: You can go to a book shop alone, read anything you want free of cost over a basic coffee or just sit there all day on the stools provided at every aisle, and browse through various topics without being harassed by store sales men. Crosswords, Turner road and Tidal waves, opp Durello convent are the stores to check out for this.

Lets face it, the heat stinks! Some fortunate ones can get out of the city and avoid the Mumbai summer blush but most just have to cope with what's there around us. Fortunately Bandra always has things to do for adults and kids who need a break from the scorching sun to enjoy vacation time and incorporate it in their daily life. So besides putting on your dark glasses and hats, these are some of the things you can do...... 1) Movie time... Watching a flick, in a cool movie hall, you won't have to put up with the fuming sun for at least two hours of the day. Star trek U/A, Chotta bheem , Gippi, are some fun films you can catch with the family this month. 2) Mall it out Yes we need a good mall in Bandra, unfortunately space being a constraint we have to make do with Shoppers Stop and Globus. But rest assured we can easily spend an afternoon in one of them or both, browsing or simply trying stuff without buying anything if you don't wish to, the hot air wont touch you there.

H

e’s perhaps got the most exciting job of the season. Think of all those times growing up when you watched a live band performance at a wedding or dance or live music show, and watched the drummer steal the show. Then you’ll know precisely why his job is so exciting and energizing. Meet Bandra’s very own Joshua Vaz who is a drummer for the Extraaa Innings T20 during the IPL season, on Sony LIV. I threw ten questions at him and here’s how he smacked them out of the stadium: 1. I have images of you driving you mum mad beating on a stainless steel handi with a spoon from age 2. So to clarify these images in my head, for how long have you been a drummer? (laughing) Those images are actually correct. But to be honest I learnt piano for twelve years through Trinity College, London. After my HSC exams, when I was about 17 years old, some friends from my building started learning how to play the drums and that got me interested. My dad asked if I’d like to learn and I thought I’d try it out. I need to mention here, that I come from a family of drummers. I’m a third generation drummer. Both my grand dads are drummers. Leslie Godinho, my mum’s dad played the drums on all Mohammed Rafi songs, Francis Vaz, my dad’s dad played the drums for R D Burman, Laxmikant Pyrelal, Kishore Kumar, Lata Mangeshkar and Asha Bhosle songs and my dad, Franco Vaz took over, after my grand dad stopped. We are truly a family of drummers, and in hindsight I appreciate the fact that, I was never forced to learn drums. It was not a given, there was no pressure. It was a choice I made. Once I learnt though, I was hooked and switched from the piano, to drums. I haven’t looked back since. When I think about it, while I liked learning the piano I never liked playing it for others, I played for myself. With drums the connection was immediate, I loved it and I wanted to play for others over and over again. 2. How did you get to be a drummer at the IPL studio? Through sheer luck! Last year they had an entire band. This year they were looking for a stand in arrangement for just one day, a fill in really, and after that one day with me, it became my job for the season. Karma, I guess. 3. How distracting are those cheerleaders in the studio? Do you ever miss a beat?

Who do you think will win this 4. Who’s your favourite IPL commenta- year? tor? I think that would be Rajasthan Royals, I think it would be Harsha Bhogle, because Chennai Super Kings, Mumbai Indians he is smart, precise, always diplomatic and and Royal Challengers Bangalore. And the never mean. The most entertaining how- winner? RR all the way! ever, is Navjot Singh Sidhu. When he’s around I have to be extremely alert and 8. What do you do when IPL is not in bring on my A game. season? I normally tour with Sonu Nigam, Vishal 5. Which has been your favourite match Shekhar, Mohini Thakur, Raghav Sachar so far? and Shibani Kashyap. The Chris Gayle innings was mind bogglingly good. And the Chennai Super Kings 9. Anything else interesting about you v/s Rajasthan Royals match, in which that you need the girls to know? Shane Watson scored 70 off 30 odd balls, (laughing) My mantra is to work hard and was another absolute favourite for me this party hard. I spend my entire day on the drums practising and then I start partying year. at 10 pm. 6. Have you met any of the players? Sadly no! Since I am in the studio and not 10. What advice would you give to chilthe stadium, I’ve met retired players, but dren who are considering taking up a

similar profession? I would go out on a limb and say that it would normally be, boys who are getting into college who’d consider asking this question, as they think being a drummer is the ideal way to serenade a girl. So, to them I would say, that a drummer is the last to pack up and the first to reach the show, since the set up time is the most compared to other band members, with all the equipment involved. Those girls they are thinking about, ONLY wait the extra time if you are really, really good. So, only take this up if you are serious about it and if you are willing to spend hours and hours practising, not for the wrong reasons. It is hard work. Nalini Sørensen

Are you counting down, yet? t’s almost like a time bomb in me. I keep looking at the clock and counting down to the next IPL match. Initially, it was only till the next Mumbai Indians match, but as of now, it’s any match. It’s like my night fix, before I can finally retire to bed with a satisfied feeling of an evening well spent. It does not help matters, that I have downloaded the official BCCI app on my mobile and it has a count down clock informing me of how many Hours: Minutes: Seconds, to the next match. So if I’m in doubt or can’t properly estimate how much time to the 4 pm or 8 pm match, I click on my faithful app. The brilliant thing about the IPL is that it’s every Indian’s dream come true. It’s got sacks full of masala at every level and is a win-win satisfier to every Indian. It’s like the best mutton biryani in the world, as you dig deeper, and go past the aromatic rice, you can only get more flavor and of course, the meat, down at the bottom. First there’s the whole Bollywood/ Bigwig business house angle - While SRK has not been as visible this year, as the past years, (after his little “incident” last year) the constant flashes of Juhi Chawla, Shilpa Shetty and Raj Kundra, Preity Zinta, Mukesh and Nita Ambani, Ness Wadia, Subrata Roy, Sid Mallya.. AND all their very famous friends.. (the list goes on and on) are enough to keep the crowds going. It’s like page 3, in real life. Why wait for hours outside Salman Khan’s house at Bandstand, on a Sunday evening, hoping for him to come and wave for a minute, when you have this? Then come the cheerleaders. And the huge variety of what they are wearing – from saris and ghagras with dandiyas clicking in their hands, to very sexy shorts and tank tops strategically cut out at their waists, to show off their very worked out abs. Something never seen before, in any Indian sport. Something we only read about and saw in the US, actually here at our doorstep! (Or in the stadium, really) Let’s not leave out the very attractive young girl interviewers who don’t know much about the game and ask mostly inane questions, but are forgiven anyway for just adding beauty and pizzazz to the scene. They

I

also provide the important task of keeping social media sites abuzz with a fresh load of ammunition, till the next match. Most people's FB and twitter feeds would be empty without these darling interviewers. What about those guys in all kinds of colours, shapes and sizes beating drums, blowing bugles, generally screaming and adding to the excitement and noise, in an otherwise “silent” country? They actually deserve a write up just for themselves! Lastly, like that succulent piece of mutton at the very bottom of the big biryani handi, there’s the cricket. We do not have a common religion or language that binds us as Indians, but we have cricket. Our IPL lives up to its reputation of generating adrenaline rushes with super overs, Gayle storms, last ball victories and nail biting finishes, better than any other form of cricket, a game we are crazy about anyway. To add to the drama (like there wasn’t

enough) players are interviewed while they are on the field, playing. You feel like you are there, you want to add on to the things he is saying, just because you know he isn’t 100% concentrating, as he has only half his mind on the questions being asked. He needs the other half for the game in progress. Besides, where else also, could the very healthy rivalry between Mumbai-Delhi, Pune-Mumbai, Chennai-Bengaluru, DelhiPunjab, receive a level playing field, so to speak? If you keep in mind the crores of Rupees these players earn from just one season, depending on your Math skills, you go silent while trying to figure out how many zeros go to the figure they are paid. And if you try to calculate this during a match, again depending on your Math skills, you might miss an important catch or six sixes! Is it worth it? Oh definitely! After all why deprive millions like me of their night

fix? So tune in a little early tonight – get on your feet and shake to ‘Jumping Zapak’ and then shout with me, “Three-Two-One Oh Yes Abhi!” at precisely 8 pm. Make the most of tonight’s IPL drama, and try not to think of the withdrawal symptoms you are going to have to deal with after 26 May 2013. Nalini Sørensen

10 Fashion changes for women after kids 6. White wash: everybody who knows me will know that white is my favourite colour which now makes guest appearance with the fear of mud, grease, oil, food, and lots more.

After working in the fashion industry for over a decade ofcourse I love dressing up, following trends, reading fashion magazines even if they promote low self esteem, reading on who, wore, what and shopping. But while running errands this morning and dropping the older one for her gym class I realized wow how much have I changed. From a nice pony or blow dry to a bun, a dress replaced by comfy wear like leggings and a lose top that helps running around with the older one and nursing the younger one! Phew, life’s changed even if its temporary.

7. Perfect polish! So I haven’t painted my finger nails for over 4 years since my nail polish always chips and given that I feed the daughter myself, don’t want any of it in her food. 8. Denims vs. Leggings: Thank God for the leggings coming into fashion and screaming comfort. With all the running around and sitting down. Just feels like the leggings work so well vs the denim where you need to be careful. Skinnies is a distant dream for sure.

So here are 10 fashion changes I have made and ofcourse I miss them 1. Accessories no more! I absolutely love accessorizing each look either with chunky necklaces or bangles. But accessories scream not around babies. I love them so much that I can’t was the last time I carried a clutch or a great satchel. As see them in pieces or even let go off one pearl. moms we now shop on how much can a bag accomodate. 2. 9. Hair bands, clips and funky hair bands: as a mom of two daughters you will find me with colourful clips and sparkle bands. 10. Pocket me please: I always choose pants with lots of pockets as they can accomodate stuff and out of all my pickets I am sure to find change, hair bands & clips, You will also find trash, used tissues as we cant throw things in public so moms pockets are always handy. Then, he requested the Chief Minister of Maharashtra to look into the New Property Tax matter, as it would badly hurt the common man. SENIOR CITIZENS

Old age is a Curse They say that old age is the ‘curse’. It is the most unwanted phase of the life as in most cases it is burdened with social, psychological, physical and biological problems. As one advances in he age particularly when one crosses 70 years. Some of the aforesaid problems become accentuated and in some cases these result in permanent/partial disability. The ‘independence’ in such cases gradually vanishes, opening the door for ‘dependence’. Such critical phase of life induces “loneliness” as a result of desertion by kith and kin. And yet (although it sounds paradoxical but it is true) that in some such cases, senior citizens do not wish to ‘depart’ for heavenly abode (if there is one). This is basically attributed to the deep-rooted attachment to materialistic things around and also in some cases family ties which may also, include women folk. Strong urge to see the face of a grand child if there is none at the moment, before death. There are numerous cases of ‘desertion’ at an advanced age particularly when the member is suffering from chronic disease/ailment or has permanent/ partial disability. IMPORTANT: The younger generation in most cases is unable to perceive their future at this stage and thus realize that old age is the inevitable cycle of life and when they themselves reach that unwanted phase of life, their children will pay them in same coin. We read a lot of literature on ‘suffering’ in old age. Also, there are good movies on this subject the latest being “Baghbaan”. But unfortunately all these create a momentary or short lived impact and rely on chances which in reality people do not encounter. One distinct disadvantage of present day ‘generation cap’ is invariably degeneration of traditional values of family ties. The due respect for elderly members of the family and ‘tolerance’ which were a part of joint family system take the back seat. Almost all religious scriptures have emphatically ordained to faithfully

serve and respect the elderly members of the family and yet, the elderly members are considered ‘burden’ and thus they are either ‘isolated’ or packed off to ‘Budha Ashram’ (Home for aged). They are kept away from kith and kin and they suffer in silence. There is no one to wipe their tears. Do they deserve this kind of ‘existence’ at the fag end of their life? I have visited a few such ‘Homes for Aged’ and have met some inhabitants who have narrated woeful and pathetic tales about their existence and how they were dumped there. The object of this article is to awaken and provoke the ‘Younger Generation’ and ask them how will they ‘REACT’ if they were placed in the similar situation. This article is not written to evoke ‘sympathy’. Sympathy may have ‘charitable’ characteristics and may not fit into the main objective of voluntary accepting the ‘responsibility’ to faithfully serving and caring the senior members of the family in the sunset of their life. If this realization dawns on this generation, I can assure them they will be earning millions of blessings of their elders which will stand them in good stead. Our scriptures have laid down that ‘one can visualize heaven’ in the lotus feet of mother or father. SUGGESTIONS/ADVICES I am a senior citizen myself (78 years), fortunately for me I am still quite active and fit. For this, I do physical exercises, etc., regularly twice a day. I would like to share this with you for your benefit. Also render some practical advice: 1. First and foremost advice I would like to give is: Do not ever part with your hard earned savings and/or property to children in your lifetime. The emotions that induce parting with savings, etc., had to be kept under strict control. I can cite several cases of senior citizens who had suffered irreparable damage after parting with their savings, etc., whilst they were still alive. Without parting

with your savings, etc., you will be better off and you will get due respect and attention from your siblings, because they are kept guessing as to who will get what share of your wealth. Also, when you make a WILL do not do it in their presence. Do it either at your Advocate’s office or elsewhere. Siblings should not get inkling about it nor their share. Try this and you will see the difference in their attitude and behaviour. (hopefully). This is a famous saying: “A fact kept secret is worth millions, post revelation, it becomes valueless”. 2. Walk but slowly: Both in the morning and evening for about 15 – 30 minutes is the BEST exercise. In this exercise, whole body gets activated and keeps you fit and fresh. Form this as a habit and as far as possible do not MISS this exercise. 3. Physical Exercise Simple exercises twice everyday when every limb of the body gets activated particularly, the back, legs, knees, etc. By doing these exercises, you will be slowing down the process of degeneration of bones. These exercises can be learnt either through knowledgeable friends or you can visit Physiotherapy Dept. of any hospital nearby and learn these exercises within a week’s time and then practice it regularly . I can assure you this is not expensive. 4. Do not fall For God’s sake, whilst walking or elsewhere you have to have extraordinary patience particularly, when you are crossing the road, etc. The mushroom growth of all kinds of vehicles, (autos, motor cycles, cars, etc.) and with their haphazardous speed, sure enough if you are knocked down, you will land in hospital. Despite best of attention in hospital, you may be heading for a permanent/partial disability. At this age operation becomes difficult, if not impossible. My friend who was Commander in Air-India, (died recently) used to say that at this age you cannot get ‘SPARE PARTS’. Therefore, there

is no substitute to have patience whilst crossing the road, etc. You must be reading in newspapers (hit and run cases) almost every day. No one bothers to come to your aid in many cases, even the driver of the vehicle concerned disappears when it is late in the evening. 5. Take your siesta regularly. Now that you have retired ( I am assuming) you must have about 30 to 45 minutes rest after lunch. This will relax your muscles and energize the limbs and prepare you for the evening walk. 6. Dependence: Do not over depend on your family members when you are suffering. You will unnecessarily feel disappointed. Therefore, be on your own as long as you can till end comes. This will be the best ‘Gift’ of God. I have known number of cases (quite a few amongst my close friends) who were bedridden for years due to some problem like arthritis, degeneration of the vital bones of body, etc.. They were heavily dependent on their family or they were dumped in “budhaashram” where ‘God above earth below’ is the kind of living. I have seen number of cases in “budhaashram” who have pathetic tales about their children and other family members. I may repeat what I have said above ‘Do not part with your money/wealth to your siblings as long as you are alive’. Also do not give them any inkling as to what share of your wealth they will be receiving after you are ‘gone’ to heavenly bode (if there is one). In conclusion, I would like to oftrepeated small prayer of Dada Prof. Ram Panjwani. This is with love for all senior citizens. ‘O God enable me to be on my own lest I become dependent on someone else’. Rtn. Bhagwan Bhagchandani Former GM, Crompton Greaves Ltd.

MLC Ashish Shelar takes up Holy Cross & Temples Issue across ‘H’ West Ward The Bandra Hindu Association, just off Linking Road; was the venue for a well attended meeting conducted by MLC Adv. Ashishji, regarding the list published by the BMC - about many structures of Holy Crosses & Temples across ‘H’ West Ward. Over 500 eager people wanted to know the status quo of their crosses & temples across Bandra. Sentiments were seen on the faces and in the body language of the alert crowd. When Municipal Councillor Alka Tai invited MLC Adv. Ashishji to speak on the dais; he put it across to the audience that, be it Property Tax, the Society Act – or the BMC List regarding the holy crosses & temples; it was he who always fought for the common man. He elaborated how he had put these matters across to the CM of Maharashtra – and said, “I am secular – and never won an election on religious sentiments”. Elaborating on the BMC List of Religious Structures, he explained the concept of 2 categories – A & B, according to the BMC. Category A are legal structures, that should be – or can be protected. Category B are illegal structures which should be demolished. The parameters for A & B Category are as

follows: Category A: 1. How old is the structure / people’s faith – how do we evaluate this? 2. Positive Police Report of Structure. 3. Positive Report by BMC / MMRD / MHADA about the structure. 4. If the structure is on private land, will the landlord give it an N.O.C.

Here is a Tabulated List of Crosses / Temples / Buddha Mandirs in H-West Ward: ADD cross list TABLE IMAGE HERE – important……… Adv. Ashishji continued that, totally, there are more than 80 religious structures which are in danger of demolition in H ‘West’ Ward – and

Category B: 1. Does the structure create a law & order problem? 2. Does it block vehicular traffic ? 3. Does it oppose any development? 4. Any other dangerous reason that the government points out, that does not permit the structure to be protected.

surprisingly there is ‘No Masjid’ in either A or B Category. How is it so? While on the topic, he said that the Maharashtra Government gave 30 days for suggestions & objections along with evidence submission regarding the cross/temple issue. He requested the government to extend the time to at least 60 days, as documents had to be

obtained & awareness had to be spread. He added that around 30 crosses may face demolition. These are situated at Chapel Road, Carter Road, Sherly Rajan Road, Chimbai Road, Bazaar Road – one just opposite his house. He told the audience that he would raise this important issue in the Vidhan Parishad – that if slums before 1995 can be legalized (SRP), then all religious structures before 1995 should be exempted from demolition. He therefore requested all present to help get evidence of all religious structures before 1995 – by producing documents, photos, govt. letters, proof of public faith (where any religious prayer service have happened with group gathering), any police complaint or BMC Notice to the structure prior to 1995, N.O.C. from the landlord on private land. Adv. Ashish Shelar said that he would give the concerned trustees / owners all necessary legal forms. They should attach these documents and get it sent to him after a week, when he would have another meeting. He promised the audience that he along with all BJP MLA’s MLC’s & Municipal Councillors would take up the matter with the CM Prithviraj Chavan, Mayor of Mumbai, BMC Commissioner and other concerned authorities. Ashishji concluded that he would try his level best to save the Crosses, Temples & Buddha Mandirs from the demolition squad. Sunil Parab (Adv. Ashish Shelar P.A.)

SPORTS pril, every year jump-starts the Summer vacations of many students who have accomplished their respective academic years ; but for the children of St Catherine of Sienna, ASHRAY and many street children, mid-April attempts to forge new bonds with one another in the high-spirited atmosphere of competitive sports. This Free Summer Camp started in 2011 as a way to providing free sports to the underprivileged and today it trains and nurtures these destitute children in many unparalleled ways. If you look into the lives of these destitutes who include orphans, street children etc, we frequently see that they lack the basic insight of what it takes to become highly successful in life. This is but natural, owing to the unstable conditions in which they have been brought up. Although some children have parents, they practically lack the time to impart such values to them because they constantly work in meagre conditions. Even yet, these children wear vibrant smiles on their faces and have ambitious dreams but seldom have any productive means to fulfill them. This summer camp initiated since a few years at St. Stanislaus School has fostered in them an idea of team-spirit , brotherhood and spirituality thus steering them off a potentially bad life style. This year from the 15th April through the 30th of April, more than 200 children have actively participated in this Summer Camp which has been wholeheartedly sponsored by many willing benefactors. Inaugurated by Rev. Fr. Errol Fernandes, Fr. Francis Juan and Fr. Conrad, it has been a thriving source of inspiration to all. Sports ranging from football, basketball, athletics, etc. are some of the free opportunities that many underprivileged children can easily benefit from this camp. A routine day starts by whispering a prayer to God and winds up some refreshments especially made for them. Friday, the 26th of April, was a special day as both school and underprivileged children received a crash course in basketball basics, by none other than NBA guru Troy Justice. This wasn’t any ordinary basketball clinic; Troy having been introduced to the “Sports For Peace dice prior to the workshop, went one step further and introduced it at the clinic. Some of these children who have never had the opportunity to play basketball were holding a basket-ball for the first time and being trained by a basketball pro-Yes! This was certainly a break-through. Ms. Gaelyn Mendonca too, Actress of Nautanki Saala

fame belted out some Dhak-Dhak moves with the children and seconded Fr. Andrew Rodrigues message on the last day, which stirred the entire gathering urging them to look at life optimistically in totalitarian service to all, along the lines of preserving water, preventing wastage of electricity and more importantly to be good human beings. Moreover, active support rendered by St. Peters parish team, sports coaches and many volunteers has helped making this positive venture a reality. AbMrs. Patricia Furtado, the Chief co-ordinator and Benefactor, along with her team of coaches and professionals

who volunteered- staunchly believes that by organizing such camps for the underprivileged, it helps shape for themselves a better tomorrow which gives a sense of fullness and joy not only to the children but also to each and everyone involved. Having proved to be a tremendous benefit and a humanitarian undertaking to improving the quality of life of numerous impoverished areas, it is in the best interest of all to propagate such ideologies to ensure that everyone lives life to the fullest!
