St. Andrew’s Parish to celebrate 400th Anniversary The year 2015 marks the beginning of the 400th anniversary of the formation of the Parish of St. Andrew’s Church in Bandra. The Church of St. Andrew is one of the oldest churches, not only in Bandra but across the city of Mumbai. In fact it is about 50 years older than the Taj Mahal in Agra, with the present structure of the church being built in the year 1600. History and architecture of the church St. Andrew’s Church has a rich history spanning the last four centuries. The stone cross in south section of the church compound is a relic connecting St. Andrew’s with its older sister Church of St. Anne’s, which was destroyed in 1739. It was originally located in the compound of St Anne’s, close to where the present-day Bandra Suburban Railway Station is located and moved by Fr. Francisco de Mello, a vicar of St. Andrew’s around the year 1800. According to local legend, it was said that when some disaster was about to
occur a pink glow would be visible around this cross. The north tower also serves as the belfrey, and houses the three bells that ring out each day at the times of the Angelus, at sunrise, noon and sunset as well as on festive occasions as at the Christmas Mass and the Easter Mass. The bells were also used to sound an alarm and to call the parishioners to assemble. Fairly recently in February 1956, the bells were rung to call for help when there was a fire on the main altar. Numerous parishioners mainly from Chimbai raced to the church and put off the blaze well before the fire brigade arrived. Another interesting feature of the church is the small sun window which has been constructed to permit the rays of the rising sun, at around 7am, to fall directly on the keystone of the sanctuary arch, on two days in the year during the equinoxes, on March 22nd & September 22nd.
