What exactly prompted you to start a Maruti showroom in Bandra West? My father has been in the automobile industry for about 30 years. We were one of the largest tractor dealers in North India and had a business base in Mumbai. In 2005, we felt Bandra West would be a great place to start a Maruti showroom, as there were no dealers around. We could tap into the huge prime market of Bandra, Khar, Santacruz. So, we set up Autovista Maruti Suzuki. What do your automobile setups offer? Our set-ups are showrooms & workshops. Our showroom formats are Maruti Suzuki, Nexa & Blue Star – all certified showrooms. Our offers include: • Exchange with us • Buy back program • Genuine accessories • Upgrade your car • Sell your car • Attach car to Ola/Uber

UNITED STATES OF DISCONTENT The world is in revolt. We do not have a clue about the depth of distemper that has occasioned this revolt. Nor can we fully comprehend its likely consequences. The honest truth is that almost all the basic assumptions that were brought to bear on understanding American, and perhaps global politics, are being shattered. We pretended that our techniques of analysis captured deep undercurrents. Donald Trump has revealed a form of politics we had not seen and an America we had not understood. He has charted a new chapter in history. It is hard to deny him that. We can now claim to retrospectively understand the causes of this extraordinary victory. They were hidden in plain sight. What prevented us from seeing them were our pre-judgments. Or perhaps, as Trump would diagnose, the bias of the supposed liberal establishment is now so deep that it has warped its cognitive ability to understand the world. But the broad narrative was always clear. The revolt against globalisation was deep and pervasive. The fantasy of a post-racial politics, of a politics not premised on ethnicity, was just that: A

fantasy. The demographic fantasy of a “coloured” coalition standing alongside gender solidarity underestimated the counter resistance the very idea would generate: It unleashed a significant white counter mobilisation. Anti-globalisation and racial nativism powered each other; the former gave the latter a respectable intellectual basis while nativism gave globalisation its emotional edge. We can dwell on Hillary Clinton’s vulnerabilities as a candidate, her identification with a tired and corrupt establishment, a charge levelled against her by both Left and Right. We can now speculate that our reading of American history always mistook a small episode in its identity for the whole: The America of Warren Court liberalism and the Cold War sense of global purpose was an aberration in American history. On the economic front, we can now argue that it was going to be always hard for a centrist liberal, tagged with the brush of elitism, to combat three economic discontents simultaneously: Inequality, plutocracy, and anti-trade. In past elections, these have appeared individually, not together in

a cocktail, as Bernie Sanders had suggested. The perception of these three ills overwhelmed any small consolation that the American economy was not that bad; with a modest recovery under difficult circumstances. But the Left had, in some senses, already damaged the candidate on the credibility of the economy. We can spin all these narratives. But truth be told, they will appear more of a retrospective gloss on the single most improbable electoral achievement in human history. There is still something unfathomable about this victory. Trump is now being described as an agent of enfranchising the disenfranchised. Electorally, it is hard to argue with this assessment. But it is the peculiar alchemy of this election — and perhaps a testament to the widespread support Trump has garnered — that the term “disenfranchised” is more complicated that it looks. It includes sections of the working class. But it also includes college graduates, worried less about class marginalisation, than some anger about America’s direction and its place in the world. The election was a post-modern election in this sense. Some sense of disenfranchisement is structurally clear. This may be true of sections of the working class. But a sense of disenfranchisement can also be created: By conjuring visions of a world overrun by people who are different, by the fear of immigrants and women wielding power. Do people outside the big cities resent the structural privileges of big cities, as seems to be happening, where cities are markers of power. Or do they feel disenfranchised because of the culture and lifestyles those cities represent? Is it the dispossessed sacking Rome because Rome is oppressive? Or are they sacking Rome because Rome seems a symbol of licentious freedom? The answer is not either/or. But it was Trump’s alchemy to fuse both senses of disenfranchisement into an electoral coalition. We thought Trump was vulnerable because he had annoyed so many different racial groups. It turned out that he could, instead, mobilise several different resentments. Donald Trump has shifted the tectonic plates of politics in a way unprecedented in the annals of electoral history. He was an outsider to politics. His party, while never in open revolt, did not quite know what to

do with him. His personal record would, in any other world, create a mountain of electoral vulnerabilities. His charisma, if we can retrospectively call it that, is certainly of an unorthodox kind. He did not have any conventional ideological pedigree. He did not have a long run movement or organisation. He has no experience of any public office. He had all of one newspaper endorsement. But he seems to have intuitively tapped into the mood of the moment. For Americans who were feeling inhibited, all that seemed to matter was his utter lack of inhibition. The very thing that should have been his vulnerability: His lack of decorum, his racial and gendered offensiveness, his lack of consistency, his disregard for facts, became his strength. It is hard to guess how much American voters subscribed to these tenets. But the persona seems to have convinced them that he could, to borrow the line from Star Trek, go where no man had gone before. Americans were willing to go to uncharted territory. He had the audacity to promise to take them there. This election will test American institutions like no other. Will the messy and sometimes infuriating system of checks and balances that has been the bulwark of American liberty, survive this impatience with the messiness of politics? Trump described those institutions as rigged. He ran against them. What shape will they now take under a new dispensation? He promised to rewrite the founding ideology of America as a nation of immigrants. What would America without that founding commitment look like? The consensus on global economics — a gradual movement towards freer trade, more global integration — has now been blown to smithereens. What will replace it? The election was nasty and divisive. Even if Trump is enfranchising some of the marginalised, he threatened to disenfranchise others. Will he be able to get rid of the poison his campaign has generated in public discourse, even as he promises new greatness? It is his peculiar achievement that we are now asking all the foundational questions. But there is also a sense of dread, of what lies in the dark spaces, where no man has dared to go before. With Trump, one thing is certain. Never a dull moment. Perhaps that is all that politics was yearning for. Sidhhant Kapai

Is Poverty Tourism a new tourist attraction in Mumbai? Tourism lives on what is different. Its economic implications alone urge it to constantly create new products and open up new segments on the market. Tourism always looks for new places, inventing sights and sites which are then marked and marketed as tourist attractions. The fact that tourism needs innovations for purposes of self-preservation is by no means new. What is interesting, however, is to take a look beyond this pure logic of market mechanisms in order to find out how, why and with what implications places of tourism are socially constructed. One such type of tourism is "Poverty tourism" which is getting a lot of attention today as a practice that should be subject to ethical reflection. It refers to cases in which financially privileged tourists visit impoverished communities for the purpose of witnessing poverty firsthand. Many visitors expect the trip will prove educational and help alleviate poverty. A current example is India, where poverty tourism is noticeably expanding at present. A driving force for this development has been the huge media attention in the wake of eighttimes Oscar-awarded Hollywood Film Slumdog Millionaire (2009), which is acted against the backdrop of Dharavi, the largest slum in Mumbai. In order to study the economic impact of poverty tourism to and its moral and ethical stance, I went around interviewing people staying in slums, Maharashtra Tourism Department officials, Reality Tours and Operators (the pioneers of poverty tourism in Mumbai) and people living in Bandra. Reality Tours and Travels was established in 2005 and were the pioneers of poverty tourism in India. They provide slum tours that not only show people the several industries established in the slums of Dharavi but also pass by the residential areas to provide the tourists a feel of how do people live and the sense of community that exists in the area. 80% of the profits earned by these tours is reinvested into the development of Dharavi slums. Anshka Bagchi, a resident of Bandra who has a slum settlement right outside her building is extremely displeased and annoyed with the menace caused by slum tourism. She does not support this kind of tourism because she believes that rich tourists and foreigners visit these slums in wonder. She goes ahead to say that people residing in these slums are pitied upon and treated like show pieces. Bagchi believes that slums portray an image of poverty and bring down the image of the county in front of foreigners. According to Utkarsh Kanga, if poverty

tourism cannot cause benevolence or raise funds for financial support, it is similar to the ideology of a zoological park the only difference being people travel to watch other people instead of animals. The Bandra citizen also goes ahead to say that if poverty tourism has to become socially acceptable, it has to bring with it financial support and the acceptance of the poor as a part of the society. Rubhen D’sa believes that “Slum tourism is a medium of bringing up the social topics mostly kept in the dark by authorities and the government in the shadow of tall skyscrapers. Most of the world's biggest slums breed just adjacent to prosperous metropolitan cities. Though it lets honesty knock at the doors of the affluent people living in their world of luxuries and comfort remaining ignorant and emphatic, it also serves as a window to sex trade, child labor, prostitution, substance abuse and underworld business. Taking pictures and posing with kids wearing almost nothing psychologically makes those suffering feel poorer and deepens their wound of lack of basic amenities. While some others get the wrong concept that poverty is somewhat glamorous and they begin to embrace it. Slum tourism currently does little to improve the economic conditions and living standards because the monetary help gouged in community education, building projects and medical camps is very less compared to the number of residents. It only lets big organizations and influential individuals to have their eye on such problems, which are then left to be addressed as problems only.” On the other hand Oindrilla Das believes that “poverty tourism helps us experience that side of life which is more often quite unknown to us. More importantly, the money raised from these trips often go to the NGOs and charities, indirectly helping us to contribute a bit to their self-development; and this according to me can be a noble reason to take part in these.” In order to test the fairness or unfairness of slum tours, Maharashtra Tourism Development Corporation (MTDC) official Mr. Sanjay. S. Dhenke put forth three ideals namely compensation justice, participative justice, and recognition justice. These guideposts can be summarized as follows: • Compensation justice: Are compensation schemes free from coercion and sustained by research on the values of those who stand to be compensated? • Participative justice: Have all affected parties given their express or tacit consent to

the compensation scheme, the possible outcomes, and the expected activities? • Recognition justice: Are any cultural terms unjustifiably privileged? Practices that include clear violations of any of these three guideposts may not be viewed as morally legitimate or responsible by vulnerable parties who sense they are being treated unfairly by tourists and tour operators. In contrast, practices that meet the demands of these standards are more likely to support justice and reflect legitimacy and responsibility. I personally feel that in the global, inequitable economy none of us can help but inhabit, paupers and princes are merely at opposite ends of a commercial and cultural transaction. Tours of places like Dharavi or

even for a matter of fact the slums in Bandra - provided they are sensitively conducted with the blessing of locals, and there is direct pecuniary benefit - are a unique opportunity for us Princes of the Western World to see beyond that transaction to the real people, in all their dignity and resourcefulness, on the far side. Understanding - for a few minutes at least how the other half live.

EAT OUT

The Cake Magician at Celebrations Fine Confections “Impossible is in the dictionary of fools,” the famous French military and political leader Napoleon Bonaparte once remarked. It was he who went on to lead his nation to several successful campaigns during the French Revolution. Back here in Mumbai, Mehernosh Khajotia, is a case in point of the famous remark. Barely scraping through his SSC board exams from his boarding school in Panchgani and going to college the next year due to pressure from his parents, the dyslexic Mehernosh found his true calling in the world of confectionery at the prime age of sixteen, when most others are dilly-dallying over whether to choose Arts, Science or Commerce in college. Today, Mehernosh runs his own brand called Celebrations Fine Confections, widely popular across the city for its exquisite cakes and indulgent pastries. But the journey of this magician in cakes can be traced back to humble beginnings where like every other kid Mehernosh loved eating cakes & chocolates much to the dismay of his parents, who would warn him that they wouldn’t fund his habit for long to which he retorted that he would bake his own cake & eat it too. And that is exactly what he did. With the help of his godmother, who was & even today is his confidant, Mehernosh converted his bedroom into a makeshift kitchen, from where he began taking orders from family, friends. So sublime were his preparations that soon he even started dishing out his goods to large MNCs such as Coca Cola, HUL & the like for corporate events. But his passion for the kitchen didn’t stop there. At 19, Mehernosh was the youngest to be admitted t o an elite confectionery course in Switzerl a n d

solely on the basis of his merit, where he shared the classroom with top chefs from around Europe which gave him a steep learning curve. In one of his tests, which involved identifying which company each chocolate belonged to only by tasting, Mehernosh was lauded by his professor for being the only student in the span of the professor’s career to identify that two specimens actually belonged to the same company. Such is the acumen of his taste buds that Mehernosh has used this strength to develop & innovate new flavours & combinations in his cakes with the utmost intricacy, much to the delight of his clientele. Lesser known is the fact that Mehernosh has also featured on Karen Anand’s The Great Food Guideway back in 1998, where he demonstrated his mastery with confectionery in his makeshift kitchen at home. He has also an avid foodblogger, having written numerous expert reviews on Zomato, attracting thousands of followers. Given his childhood struggles with dyslexia, which has never stopped him following his passion, Mehernosh also voluntarily counsels children and their parents at the Maharashtra

Dyslexic Council. Currently, Mehernosh operates from his 2000 sq. ft. bakery cum dessert parlour at Lower Parel, where you could dine and enjoy the sugar-rush from his heavenly assorted confectioneries as also place an order online for the sake of convenience. Here, orders are delivered across the city, right from the individual customer-for a tea-time brownie to a birthday cake, wedding cake et al-to the bulk order for more elaborate occasions such as office get-togethers and corporate parties. His favourite and most-loved preparation is his signature Double Chocolate Nut Torte with Cracked Toffee which comprises three layers of macaroon with a layer of white chocolate mousse and another layer of dark chocolate mousse topped with fresh cream, chocolate curls and cracked toffee which has the ultimate melt-in-your-mouth effect. Besides, a personal favourite is his Black Forest Gateau which gives you an extraordinarily moist and glorious taste. The Schwarzwälder Kirsch torte is as delicious a black forest cake as difficult its name is to pronounce, as also the choco delicious, the chocoholic cake and the nutty hazelnut chocolate which are all literally as sinful as their name suggests.

Le Rêve Cinema, revving dream-escapades!! Bandra is the Buzz's muse, therefore our prying eyes are always scanning for concerns which make our home a better or worse place. Luckily this article brings to the fore a story which is bound to make Bandra a better place. The Queen of the Suburbs has always been bountiful with regards to amenities, barring a fully-fledged multiplex. So, when Globus shut its doors we anticipated the inclusion of the same, however due to space constraints our hopes could not break the shackles of realty. Le Rêve cinema which is a part of the imminent South Indian based chain, justifies its name by indeed offering a dream like experience for its patrons. Le Rêve which means ‘The Dream’ in French successfully paints an unique experience for the cinemagoer. With a stark monochromatic composition the foyer is extensive. Le Rêve has no Box Office counters, as soon as you enter the fourth floor lobby there are 4 automated screens to book tickets. Time is of the essence especially in a metro like Mumbai, therefore the management wanted to make it a seamless affair. The experience starts way before one enters the premise, the mobile app and website makes life simple. Features such as online booking of tickets (via their website www.spicinemas.in or downloading their app SPI Cinemas Movie Tickets), ordering from the menu or even intimating the staff about wanting a pillow and blanket can be done with ease. In terms of projection, state of the art 4K RDX screen with digital projection eliminates any sorts of glitches during screen time and the Dolby Atmos sound quality is unparalleled, completing the big screen experience. Le Rêve’s consultant Michelin star chef Mickaël Besse introduces savouries for the palates of Mumbaikars and all the items are prepared in the kitchen as soon as the order is placed and served fresh. The dessert menu is uniform and served across their 38 locations operation, considering they are perfect to play with. The popcorn is imported from Nebraska in the United States and popped to perfection. The flavour is not only chosen by the customer but even the amount is left up to them. In the corner a self-service counter sprinkles the flavour, making it possible to make the perfect helping of corn. The management have strived hard to create a holistic and well refined user experience; the feedback provided is executed instantly. For instance tablets are installed outside the washroom space, in case any attention is required the visitor can leave a comment and it gets sent straight to the manager, who gets the matter resolved. The fifth floor will soon be made open to public, which will have a quant Parisian themed café. The cinema definitely provides an unique dreamlike experience for its patrons, right from the popcorn to the delightful desserts attention and effort is unparalleled. However the best part about a trip is the fact that one does not have to wait in a line, especially after the recent increase in visits to the banks, be it the tickets or snacks everything can be ordered on the way to the movie or right from the theatre seat. 08 NOVEMBER 2016 DENGUE – THE ‘NEW PLAGUE’ Contd. from Page 1 Any effective natural remedies? Most people who have been affected, swear by drinking the juice of papaya leaves. The complex mix of nutrients and organic compounds in papaya leaves can cause a rise in your platelet count, the high levels of vitamin C help stimulate the immune system, and the antioxidants help to reduce oxidative stress and eliminate excess toxins in the blood. The leaves can be crushed & then strained with a cloth to drink the pure juice. However, it is best to seek professional medical attention, at the earliest. Remember to drink plenty of water and fresh fruit juices. Take complete rest. Keep exposed skin to a minimum, at all times. Boost your immune system with a healthy diet, regular exercise and a positive mindset. LOCAL EXPERIENCES: We spoke to Bandraites, to get their personal experiences about dengue. - A domestic help, Madhu told us how she sat down to eat, when suddenly her legs got stiff and she could not get up. Fever followed for several days. Many of her neighbours in Chinchpokli (Gonsalves wadi), off Hill Road, have similar symptoms which continue for more than two months, in spite of being hospitalised.

BANDRA BUZZ Yusuf Bharmal, shop owner of Hilton Stores, on Hill Road, opposite Bandra Medical, stays at D’Monte Street. He told us how his 88 yrs old dad felt a sudden loss of strength and his bones became painful. When he sat down, it was very difficult to stand up again. Doctors diagnosed this as chikungunya – and the cause to eating infected curds. He elaborated the many of his neighbours were hospitalised for similar health problems. Dialen D'souza from Chimbai was diagnosed by Dr. P.P. Shroff for dengue, after coming back from a cycling trip to Khopoli. His body ached and he started getting fever. A blood test at Holy Family Hospital, confirmed dengue. Luckily, he took action in time & did all the right things. Now, he is recovering and gave us some practical advice for dengue patients. His father Herman, told us that he has noticed a reduction in the frequency of BMC fumigation rounds in his neighbourhood.

Kamla Palkhiwala from Linking Road, told us that when her regular carpenter did not turn up for almost two weeks; to complete some household carpentry job, he had started; she managed to trace his home in Danda. She was aghast to learn, that her carpenter, Ram Sharma had just died of dengue. An activist & social worker, Sheryl Fonseca told us how the tiles on the open nalla (drain water) parallel to Bazaar Road, crossing Ice Factory Lane were removed around June 2016 – and the cementing was done by the BMC, even as the open drain water was flowing; thus wasting public money – as the wet cement is washed away. David Cardoz, who also stays in this area – told us how the original sluice gates, built by the British, were either not functioning now – or have been removed, causing a back flow of water. This has added to Bandra’s water-logging problems.

NEWS

Besides, the silt from the drain is dumped behind the cross, so people think it is a garbage area and come to dump their garbage here, at Bazaar Cross Road. Although the BMC van comes in the morning, garbage continues to be dumped here throughout the day, causing very bad odour and an ideal breeding ground for mosquitoes, resulting in dengue, malaria, etc. Sheryl suggests to have a BMC bin placed here and garbage clearance twice a day, to improve hygienic conditions. Visit bandrabuzz.com/dengue.html for more details. Your comments are important to the vitality of Bandra & surrounding suburbs. Any stagnant water and areas where garbage is not taken away regularly by the BMC are breeding grounds for dengue. Don’t let this new plague start and spread. Fight it. Let us improve our civic sense and do our part, to keep our surroundings DENGUE-FREE.

This is how Modi’s surgical strike on black money will affect Bandraites

Bandra resident Eric Miranda wrote a letter to the TOI regarding the government's demonization drive, saying, “people might be allowed to smoke a cigarette made of one of these (banned) notes...as some consolation.” Miranda’s letter was a tongue-in-cheek comment on the black money hoarders across the city. What’s surprising is that the letter was not written over the past few days, it was sent to the TOI office in 1946. That was a year after the end of the Second World War & a year before Independence. The government of India had just passed an ordinance that demonetized high denomination currency, in a similar effort to weed out unaccounted cash from the system. It was the first time India had demonetized its currency this way. The results of this experiment from 70 years ago should explain what the government expects to see this time around. By the time the collections and exchange of currency was over, Rs. 47 crore had been declared across the country. Mumbai was in the lead, with Rs. 27 crore declared altogether. The collections will, no doubt, be higher this time, but in the short term it’s the working class that suffers. A lot has been said about the long queues at banks & post offices in Bandra. Day labourers have been unable to go to work since they’ve been stuck in line trying to get money changed. Housewives have waited in line since early-morning just to get enough cash to buy groceries. It’s likely to be a painful ordeal for the common citizen for the next few days.

But the average Bandra-resident realises the importance of such a move. Many appreciate the government’s efforts to purge the money system. The surgical strike on black money may be a national move, but the effects are likely to be seen in Bandra over the next year. In the short term, office-goers and blue collar workers could expect a windfall of cash. Many have been paid for the whole year in advance, as their bosses try desperately to offload cash. Fruit vendors, chaiwalas, and cigarette shops have been accepting cash advances gladly. This could stop as the deadline to change cash ap-

is a risky move, considering how closely the IT department has been watching the sector recently. There’s no doubt jewellery stores could find themselves audited for such transactions. Chartered accountants have been helping people with black money get creative. They’ve assisted them with pre-dated invoices & other schemes to legitimize the cash. One such scheme involved buying 1st class railway tickets with the discontinued cash & cancelling them after a few days to get a refund in valid currency. However, the government was quick to catch onto this & instructed rail authorities to issue refunds

“Mumbai already has 46 months worth of unsold inventory in the real estate sector. The common man has been priced out for too long. Young families and single professionals who’ve spent their entire life in Bandra find the property prices unaffordable. A correction in prices should lower the bar and make real estate more accessible over the coming year.” proaches. Businessmen and professionals with unaccounted cash face a genuine dilemma. The larger the cash hoard, the more difficult it become to get rid of it. There’s only so much cash that can be paid to maids and labourers in advance. The rest could be used to buy jewellery from any one of Bandra’s numerous jewellery stores. PAN card details are mandatory for all cash transactions worth more than 2 lakhs. Some jewellers could offer backdated invoices for gold purchases over the next few days. This

exclusively through the banking system. In the short-term, local businesses in Bandra will see an impact on sales. Retail shops, bars, eateries, and even theaters will see fewer customers as people hoard cash & spend exclusively on essentials. Meanwhile, Bandra residents can celebrate the effects of this move on real estate prices. Bandra is already a prime destination for real estate investors. At current market prices, a square foot in Bandra costs somewhere between Rs. 30,000 to Rs. 50,000. Experts including CLSA Asia-Pa-

cific Markets, Credit Suisse Group AG and Nomura Holdings Inc, all expect to see a ‘drastic’ correction in real estate prices. Mumbai-based Liases Foras Real Estate Rating & Research Pvt. estimates that 1015% of transactions in the real estate sector are done in black money. The company expects luxury real estate & land prices to fall (almost 20% to 40%) over the next year & then stagnate at that level. There’s no data on the percentage of sales in Bandra that were completed with black money, but there’s enough evidence to suggest the proportion was relatively high. Builders openly ask for cash ‘under the table’ to complete real estate deals in the city & Bandra has been a hotspot for such investments for decades. Mumbai already has 46 months worth of unsold inventory in the real estate sector. The common man has been priced out for too long. Young families & single professionals who’ve spent their entire life in Bandra find the property prices unaffordable. A correction in prices should lower the bar & make real estate more accessible over the coming year. There’s been a lot of debate over the impact of this move. Overall, it seems history will repeat itself. $30 billion has already been deposited in bank accounts across the nation. Modi promises a crackdown on 'benami' properties soon, which could further impact the real estate sector. For first-time homebuyers in Bandra, this could mean lower prices & more transparency over the coming year. A great time to get on the property ladder. Vishesh Raisinghani

Letters to the Editor BMC ELECTIONS Come February 2017 Mumbai will have its BMC elections. The civic body will elect it new representatives for the 227 wards in the city. The delimitation process of reducing  and  increasing  wards  will  not  make much of an impact. However, the reservation quota has disturbed the piece of mind of the regular candidates who through the years have built their own nests and vote banks, all for the sake of money and not for any public good. The State Election Commission should also make one important change and that is to permit each corporator for only one term because familiarity breeds contempt. We have not seen our corporator since the past 4 years, which itself shows his report as being absolutely dismissal. So also is the case of practically all Bandra corporators. The  Election  Commission  should  check their performance records whether they deserve to be given chance to stand again as public servants. One woman corporator from  Bandra  has  audacity  to  say  in  the newspaper  that  she  is  educating  the masses on how to keep the city clean. She should take up the job as a teacher rather than waste our time as a corporator. Such candidates should be barred from standing again along with the absentees. It  is  high  time  the  public  realise  that casting their precious vote to candidates belonging to political parties will do nothing to improve our roads, sanitation, health and  well-being.  Better  to  vote  for  independent  candidates  who  have  character and  integrity  which  our  political  parties lack. This is the main reason why BMC has become  the  most  corrupt  body  in  the country. BMC & Bhamla Foundation ropes in Akshay Kumar as the ambassador of ‘Jaan Bachao’ campaign From the driver's seat to the office chair & then the comfy couch, sedentary lifestyle could well be the killer, avers a new Mayo Clinic study. Sitting could well be more dangerous than smoking, as it kills more people than HIV & is more treacherous than parachuting. Recent researches tag global figures on account of sedentary lifestyle deaths are an alarming 5.3 million, terming it pandemic, equating to about one in 10 deaths from diseases such as heart disease, diabetes & breast & colon cancer. Habitual inactivity raises risks for obesity, diabetes, cardiovascular disease, deep-vein thrombosis, & metabolic syndrome among many others. Prolonged sitting adds up to six percent of all cases of coronary heart disease, about 7 percent of type 2 diabetes & 10 percent of breast & colon cancer; that is 5.3 million deaths per year, more than the 5 million lives lost annually to smoking. A new way of thinking, suggesting the public needed to be warned about the dangers of inactivity rather than just reminded of the benefits of being active seems to be the only possible solution in sight, aver researchers drawn from centres across the world, who feel that governments needed to look at ways to make physical activity more convenient, affordable & safer. Keeping this in mind, Asif Bhamla, President, Bhamla Foundation, has roped in Akshay Kumar as the MCGM’s good health ambassador by getting the superstar to bring to life, ‘Jaan Bachao’ campaign & wants every citizen not to be his own enemy & protect himself against diseases. Directed by Rajkumar Hirani, & also starring renowned Marathi actor Nikhil Ratnaparkhi, the campaign is a unique initiative by the foundation & MCGM. This good health campaign followed the ' TB Harega Desh Jeetega' campaign with Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation, featuring Amitabh Bachchan to essay character of the common man. Bhamla, who is known for his philanthropic activities, is known for his support to environmental & humanitarian causes.

The current campaign sees Akshay Kumar bring out the fitness consciousness is the common man, & was launched by Devendra Fadnavis, Hon'ble Chief Minister of Maharashtra in the presence of Ajoy Mehta, Municipal Commissioner, Mumbai, Additional Commissioner Sanjay Deshmukh, Adv. Ashish Shelar, Shalini Thackeray, and eminent cardiologist Dr. Ramakanta Panda of Asian Heart Institute & Sonu Walia among others. Shekhar Suman was the Master of Ceremonies. Devendra Fadnavis was vocal in his appreciation. “A true celebrity is one who does not just deliver hit films but also takes out time to stand up for causes that matter. Akshay has not just taken out time for the ‘Jaan Bachao’ campaign but is also here for the launch. This, in my mind, makes him a true ‘hero, a true ‘superstar’. Asif Bhamla has a social bent of mind & through Bhamla Foundation has done a commendable initiative with MCGM,” he stated. Added Asif Bhamla, “We lose health for half our lives earning wealth, and the other half we lose wealth to get good health. This campaign aims to shake us from our couch potato roots & get us to get out there and do something now. Who else could be a perfect ambassador than Akshay Kumar? And when it came to direction, we could think of no one better than Rajkumar Hirani. I am glad, both agreed and the Chief Minister is gracious enough to give the nod to launch the same. We hope this campaign goes a long way in helping not just Mumbaikars but each global citizen stay healthy.” Akki had a word of advice. “For good health, all you need to do is to not eat anything after 6:30 pm… if you follow this simple rule, diabetes, hypertension & any such disease can be kept at bay.” “India is burdened with a twin epidemic of infectious & non-communicable diseases (NCDs). Even as we tackle diarrhea and tuberculosis as causes of large scale death, we face the dubious distinction of being the heart disease & diabetes capital of the world. Unhealthy eating habits, lack

of exercise, smoking, alcohol consumption and stress along with poor health seeking behavior puts Indians at high risk for NCDs. The brunt of NCDs is borne by most people in their most productive years & it affects their families & the nation at large," avered Dr. Ramakanta Panda, Cardiac Surgeon and Vice Chairman & Managing Director, Asian Heart Institute, Mumbai. “According to the WHO Global action plan, if these risk factors are addressed by changing lifestyle, it can reduce NCD related premature deaths

by 50%. It is very important to adopt a healthy lifestyle which includes regular exercise & healthy diet,” he added. Considering that researchers estimate that if only 10 per cent of those who are currently inactive started to exercise, 533,000 lives would be saved; if 25 per cent began moving, 1.3 million deaths could be averted, with just 30 minutes of brisk walking or cycling five days a week, we would like this initiative to surely make a difference.

hood experiences of Bandra Station. Bandra Railway Station was centrestage that day. After brief speeches by the dignitaries, NGOs had wonderful road-skits with the theme of Gandhi Jayanti. It was a sight to see young kids dressed as Mahatma Gandhiji, Pandit Nehru and ‘Mother India’ – shouting slogans of Indian nationalism. This was patriotism in action. Then, to add colour and sound to the event, ‘Morya Dhol Tasha Pathak’, comprising of more than 30 youth (boys and girls), gave us a good measure of the ‘Dhol’ beats, that re-vibrated the entire station. Everywhere, high energy was flowing.
