Educating Our Whole Community Katherine Hume, Cross Campus Assistant Principal: Continued Professional Learning
T
he role of Assistant Principal for Continued Professional Learning (CPL) focuses predominantly on growing and developing the skills of our teachers to ensure the highest quality learning for our students. Several times each academic year we welcome external educational experts from across the globe to Bangkok Patana School with the primary aim of upskilling our teaching staff. More often, when these experts visit us we recognise that their knowledge and expertise can also benefit our student and parent communities. Therefore, we plan accordingly, to be certain that we maximise the impact of these visits and ensure that we upskill our whole community on the things that really matter to us, whether they take a Well-being, Learning or Global Citizenship focus. Our whole school development objective this year is ‘How do we ensure that we promote, value and nurture Well-being in our community to support students learning?’ You may recall in Term 1 that we welcomed Dick Moore back to Bangkok Patana. During Dick’s visit he facilitated two days of ‘Mental Health First Aid’ training; a globally accredited training programme aimed at professionals who work with young people. Our key welfare teaching staff, including Leaders of Learning and Welfare in the Primary School, Heads of Year in the Secondary School, as well as our School Counsellors had the opportunity to attend this training. Dick also led talks to students across the Primary and Secondary school, as well as an enlightening and informative parent presentation, which was extremely well supported by over three hundred of our parents. Dick left our school community better informed about mental health and well-being issues children and young people are currently facing across around the world, and gave us some great top tips to support our children and each other to maintain good mental health. As we continue to move forward with the whole school Well-Being objective, our professional learning focus does not stop there. In the near future we will be welcoming Natasha Devon MBE, to Bangkok Patana. Natasha is a writer and mental health activist. She tours the world delivering talks as well as conducting research on mental health, body image, gender and social equality. Natasha regularly speaks at the UK Parliament, and gives evidence to the UK Education and Health Select Committees. In 2015, she was awarded an MBE for her services to young people. To find out more about Natasha and her work visit website https://www.natashadevon.com/.

During her time with us, we will be tapping into Natasha’s knowledge and expertise to educate our school community. Natasha will deliver mental health master classes to our teachers and parents providing us with key skills and strategies to promote good mental health and high self-esteem. She will also educate students on issues such as: • Critical thinking: body image and social media • Healthy coping for stress and anxiety • Study skills: Why looking after your mental health can make you clever • How to support each other with our mental health • Social ideals, identify and mental health Recommended reading, Natasha’s books…
The New Hampshire Government sums up nicely the importance of involving and educating the whole school community on the things that really matter, “When schools actively involve parents and engage community resources they are able to respond more effectively to the health-related needs of students. These partnerships result in sharing and maximizing resources. And they help children develop healthy behaviours and promote healthy Well-being.” We know through research that good mental health and Well-being of our children is paramount to their ability to benefit from high quality teaching and learning, as Professor John Almarode (James Madison University, USA) explains so well in this clip here.
By providing opportunities for our whole community to grow and learn together we have a greater chance of ensuring our children achieve their full potential.

Goose and Friends Author Laura Wall Inspires Children to Create Stephen Murgatroyd, Cross Campus Head of Libraries
T
his week we have had the pleasure of hosting Laura Wall, the author and illustrator of the “Goose and Friends” series of books. She shared her books with the children from Nursery and Tiny Tigers through to those in Year 1, and was a huge success with everyone. The inspiration and motivation for writing and artwork she generated was wonderful to see and the groans from the children when their time with her was over was a sound that put a smile on everyone’s face. The best recommendations you can ever have about any visiting author are those which the children themselves give and these were legion this week. My favourites were the sight of a child from Foundation Stage who sprinted across the outside grass area when he knew that Laura was there, so he could go and get the book he had written at home, after listening to her stories, because he wanted to share his work with her. Then there was a Year 1 teacher who told me that his class had independently chosen to continue writing the Goose stories they had started with Laura and that the quality of their writing was excellent, especially from those children who did not always find the writing process an easy one. The key here is ‘inspiration’ and the children have certainly been inspired to read, write and draw as a result of seeing Laura in action. #Honk!
I liked the way she drew Goose and made it look like a cartoon. She is really good at drawing! Aiden, 1T
I liked that she taught us how to draw the Goose and how we wrote Goose and the Beanstalk story because it was funny. Sophia 1T

F
ollowing the recent cancellations, the TigerSharks team made up for lost time with lots of fast swimming on Saturday.

This was an opportunity for swimmers to race new events, gain lots of PB’s and qualify for the upcoming BISAC events. TSA NATIONAL TIME TRIAL With Thailand National Championships less than five weeks away, 40 TigerSharks made their way to Assumption University to get some much needed race practice and add to their National Qualifying times (NQTs).

With 34 TigerSharks already qualified for Nationals, a number of other swimmers were keen to claim qualifying times to join them at Songkran. The first to ad their name to the qualifiers list was Year 5 student, Levi Stafford who was on fire with three new qualifying times in 50m, 100m Backstroke and 100m Freestyle. Avel Robinson produced a big PB in the 200m Freestyle to add his name to the roster too. Taku Ishizaki added his name with a great swim in the 100m Freestyle, narrowly missing the 50m and 200m times by a combined 0.5s. Another new qualifier was Tanwaar Taylor, who sprinted his way to the 50m Freestyle qualifying time. Finally, Pon Pingkarawat added a strong 50m Breaststroke time. Friendly Match Keeps Tennis Team Motivated Dan Ahl, Cross Campus Head Tennis Coach
L
ast weekend should have been spent in Phuket competing against FOBISIA schools from around South East Asia, but instead with the event cancelled due to the ongoing travel ban we stripped it all back and settled instead with a friendly match play event against St Andrews School Bangkok. With each school having approximately 20 students each, we concentrated on having fun, enjoying ourselves, developing and practising skills and trying out new techniques whilst still being competitive and doing our best to win the individual matchups. All this led to some excellent matches both in singles and doubles with younger students being able to test themselves against more experienced older students who in turn did their best to repel the challenge. Breaks in play saw the older girls retreat to the Tennis Office to practise their latest tiktok, the boys drift over to watch the Rugby Tens whilst all around them their parents were socialising often with friends they had made from all their time spent watching from the side of the courts. Thanks to all who played and and showed that even though we are going through uncertain times the best policy is to plan ahead and get events/matches in the calendar as things to look forward too keep the motivation going.

Girls’ Varsity Softball in Strong Showing Against RIS Stephanie Davis 13L ast Friday on the 28th of February, the Varsity Girls’ Softball team travelled all the way to Ruamrudee International School for their first match of the season. As we made the long journey from school, rain started pouring. Despite this,, we started our warm-ups as usual and started to get used to throwing and catching the slick ball. Luckily, by the time we finished warm-ups, the rain had subsided into a clear sky perfect for a match.
L
As the away team, we started the match hitting. With lots of nerves and jitters, we had a slow start to the game. Our hitting was quite average and we let two runs slide in our fielding. After finishing the first few innings, everyone felt more at ease which led us to hit very well for the remainder of the match. After going through the batting order multiple times, we went onto the field strong and confident where our defence didn’t let a single run through for the rest of the match. Overall, we won comfortably 38-2 with newly made friendships with the Ruamrudee girls and a stronger team bond than ever before. We are ready to face other teams in preparation for our BISAC later in March.

Heading the Ball Mark Potter, Head Coach Football Academy ome of you may have seen some news in media about a 'ban' on heading the ball in youth football in the UK over the last week or so, therefore I thought this would be a timely opportunity to give our view on heading in youth football.
S
To be clear, there has not been a 'ban' on heading a football, my old boss at the Football Association Les Howie has given guidance to volunteer coaches that heading should not be practiced in training sessions (some would argue this is common sense). In match situations heading is still allowed and will remain a small part of any game. In our sessions here at Bangkok Patana we never actively coach heading the ball with our young players, in fact the ball being in air directly opposes our playing philosophy. Hopefully you will never hear one of our coaches shout "head it" or "boot it" this is because we want excellent technical footballers who are adept at playing with their feet. We also actively encourage our players to pass or dribble through the thirds of the pitch from defense to attack as opposed to lumping the ball from our goal to their goal. So please be assured that your child will not be repeatedly heading a football here at BPS Football Academy. As the great Brian Clough once said "If God wanted us to play football in the clouds, he would have put grass up there"

anCURE is a newly-established student-led CAT club which aims to raise funds for the Queen Sirikit Centre for Breast Cancer Foundation and to increase awareness of breast cancer within our local community. To meet our goals, which includes raising THB40,000 for the foundation, we have carried out bake sales and breast cancer talks to school cohorts. This CAT club is campaigning for the SDG (sustainable development goal) 3 - good health and wellbeing. Demonstrated by statistics showing that the chances of surviving breast cancer increase by 98 percent with early detection, we strongly believe that funding the check-ups that Queen Sirikit Centre holds will make a big difference to the lives of many underprivileged women. Achieving our goal of 40,000 baht is just around the corner; CanCURE has raised over THB35,000 as of the end of February. Breast cancer awareness is ever-increasing in our school community. Back in October, during Breast Cancer Awareness month, the PTG and SILC hosted the Pink Tennis Charity tournament. During this event, 64 players took part and raised an incredible amount of THB140,640. Nevertheless, beyond the opportunity to raise awareness and funds in support of Queen Sirikit Center for Breast Cancer Foundation, SILC and the PTG also promoted the benefits of tennis as a healthy life sport for all ages.
well as provides them with breast and cervical cancer screening. Firstly, teams consisting of specialist nurses, volunteers and breast cancer survivors offer teaching programmes to the poorest women during the weekend every four months. After the teaching sessions, the women who are genuinely in need are registered to come to the QSCBC for free breast cancer screening, including digital mammography, ultrasound and full medical examinations, as well as cervical pap smears. To make the experience non-threatening and an enjoyable day out, the women and their children are given meals, ‘make-overs’ and gifts. If a woman is found to need treatment, they are followed up and brought back to the QSCBC for care. Essentially, it is hoped that the treated women spread the word in their communities about the value of these teaching events. Over the years, this has led to the build-up of relationships with these communities so that now the women know they can contact the QSCBC directly if themselves, their friends or neighbours are in need of urgent treatment.
Additionally, the funds received from the PTG and SILC will support the Pink Park project; which will build a centre for the most underprivileged patients to recover from breast cancer and receive treatment as well as physical and emotional rehabilitation. For others, Pink Park will be a sanctuary for patients who are near the end of their lives and need a place to pass away with dignity and in a The funds received from both CanCURE and Pink Tennis clean environment. will go on to support and ensure that unprivileged women in Bangkok have the access and the education to get tested On behalf of CanCURE, the PTG, and SILC, we would and treated regardless of their gender, age, background, like to say a big thank you to all the individuals that have financial situation and location. UNI OFFERS...
Arnav Jhaveri, Year 13
Congratulations on offers to study Computer Science from
• University of Pennsylvania • King’s College London
I
have been a student at Bangkok Patana for the past 13 years (since Year 1). The first offer I received was from the University of Pennsylvania. Shortly after, I received an offer from King’s College London for Business Management, after which I rescinded all my UCAS and US applications. As per the Early Decision agreement, I have been enrolled in the 268th class at the University of Pennsylvania (studying Computer Science at the School of Engineering (SEAS). I have always had a deep passion for computing and programming - from basic scratch programs to more complex specialised programs. Studying this course will not only allow me to enhance my problem solving and programming skills but also learn practically applicable skills for the real-world. Ultimately, computing and engineering are passions of mine, which I wish to pursue and thrive in, in the future. I have been involved in Habitat for Humanity as a board member (Secretary) since Year 11, helping liaise and communicate within the club. Furthermore, I was the co-founder of the Computer Science Enrichment Program, in which we organised the Fobisia Coding Competition. I also co-founded Patanomics, a student lead Economics and Business editorial, and am one of five Senior Delegates.

#147: Eat, Sleep, Revise, Repeat?
I
n the ‘Eat, Sleep, Revise, Repeat’ Year 11 tutorial session on Thursday I presented to the students on how to support their revision sessions both with and without technology. However, the majority of the tips are not revision specific, they are best practice for learning on a day-to-day basis. For example, take the Cornell Notes taking method augmented with Sketchnoting Techniques in the video above, or the Lietner System when using flashcards. If you are interested in taking a look at some of the other items in the presentation then you can find a copy of it here. Have a great weekend.

It’s not about dieting. Eating well is just a piece of the puzzle, of an overall healthy lifestyle. Learning to lead a life that’s balanced, understanding our body’s uniqueness and creating a life time of habits with moderation and variety. Protein, Carbohydrates, and Fats; what are they, why we need them, and which ones are good and which ones we should eat and others we should avoid. Sugar addiction is a real thing, Where sugar hides, how much sugar are we really getting in a day. Advertising, what we see and read isn't necessarily true, it's important to educate ourselves. Sports and Nutrition: How much extra do we need and what are the best ways to help fortify our bodies before and after sport. • Benefits of a healthy well balanced diet, side effects of a poor diet • Educating the students that they are all unique (of course physically) but how their body reacts to foods etc. what feels good for one person, may not be ok for someone else. • Foods should not be considered bad or good, but there are foods to avoid and only eat once in a while because of the way they make us feel, not the way they might make us look. • How we can improve our eating habits and why we should • Creating small healthy nutrition goals each week instead of choosing a restrictive diet like keto or vegan. This helps to create habits that are sustainable long term, creating balance Families sign up online here 06/03/2020
