Students are strongly encouraged to participate in a wide variety of organizations, student clubs, and other extra-curricular activities available on campus. Field trips and special lectures are regularly organized to provide students with opportunities to explore the dimensions of Thai culture, language, arts, and society that may not be appreciated from books alone.

Admissions

Special Students

Local Students

Students who would like to take some selected courses and receive the credits, but are not seeking a degree at Bangkok University, are categorized as special (visiting) students. Students who register for a course for which no credit will be received are considered auditing students. Overseas students interested in these types of studies can contact BU International.

Every local applicant must: 1. Hold a M.6 certificate or its equivalent issued by the Ministry of Education, or equivalent certificates from local or overseas educational institutions recognized by the Ministry of Education; 2. Not suffer from a communicable disease or mental disorder; and 3. Have a clear and good record of conduct. All candidates are required to pass the written entrance examination in English and Mathematical aptitude. Those who have a SAT score of at least 1000 (Critical Reading and Mathematics) or a TOEFL score of at least 61 (Internet based test score) are eligible for admission without taking the written examination. Overseas Students

To be eligible for admission, overseas students must submit a high school certificate, an original copy of the official transcript and the English proficiency test score. Applicants must complete an online application form and mail their educational credentials to BU International, which acts as the first screening body in the selection process. Transfer Students

Transfer students seeking admission to Bangkok University must have obtained a cumulative GPA of 2.00 or above from previously attended accredited institutions. The grades earned from the previous institutions are valid for only 5 years. The grade received for each course eligible for transfer cannot be lower than “C� or its equivalent. The transcript, course descriptions and one letter of recommendation from a former instructor must be submitted for the purpose of the credit transfer. Student Support Services

BU International provides a wide range of support services for both overseas and Thai students enrolled in the programs. Services include counseling, tutoring advice, and information regarding visa renewal, admission, housing, financial aid and scholarships. BU International also works closely with international visitors, other universities, community offices and agencies.

Scholarships and Student Loans

Off-Campus Housing

Scholarships are available to students with outstanding scholastic achievements. In addition, student loans are available to Thai students who can prove their need for financial aid. About 140 scholarships and outstanding academic achievement awards are granted to students each year. The scholarships cover tuition fees and other related fees. The majority of the scholarships are given by the University itself. Some financial institutions as well as some local business enterprises also participate in making scholarships available to students. Freshmen, transfer, and special (visiting) students, however, are not eligible for the scholarships. Scholarships are also granted to the athletes of the University while student loans are provided by the government as well. All scholarships are annually renewable and are subject to a satisfactory review of the students’ academic records. Awards available are free from any financial and employment obligations.

Bangkok University Apartment occupies the 2nd floor of The Link 2 condominium, offering both private and dorm rooms with a maximum of 3 beds per room. Fully furnished, all rooms are air-conditioned with private bathroom, pantry, wardrobe, and study desks. Located in one of Bangkok’s business districts and only 200 meters away from the Skytrain (On-Nut Station). Another off campus accommodation occupies the 7th floor of The Lumpini Place Rama 4 condominium, offering private rooms. Fully furnished, all rooms are air-conditioned with private bathroom, pantry, wardrobe, and study desks. Swimming pool, fitness center, sauna, restaurant, minimart and laundry are available. Both places are located in Bangkok’s main business district with easy access to the city’s main attractions, Skytrain Station, shopping centers and leisure venues. For more information, please contact buic@bu.ac.th. Accommodation is also available in private apartments near the city campus. Apartments within walking distance from the campus are offered at various prices and styles. A typical studio apartment with basic furniture provided will cost from 6,000 to 12,000 Thai Baht per month, plus additional charges for utilities, such as electricity, water, telephone, and Internet access. A deposit/advance payment equivalent to 2 or 3 months rent is usually required. GENERAL INFORMATION Bangkok University

One of the first and largest private universities in Thailand, Bangkok University is a non-profit institution of higher learning whose goal is to educate and develop students to their highest potential in this competitive and fast-changing world. Founded in 1962 by Mr. Surat and Mrs. Pongtip Osathanugrah, with the mission to provide innovative academic and practical studies in ways that will challenge the student’s all-around abilities, the University remains committed to accomplishing this mission as an institution of higher learning recognized both nationally and internationally. With a total enrollment of over 29,000 students, the University includes 11 schools that offer academic programs leading to a Bachelor’s degree in Accounting, Business Administration, Communication Arts, Humanities and Tourism Management, Law, Economics, Science and Technology, Fine and Applied Arts, Engineering, Architecture and Entrepreneurship and Management. In addition, the Graduate School offers programs of study in ten major fields, namely Business Administration, Business Administration in Small and Medium-Sized Enterprises, Communication Arts, Law, Information Technology and Management, Interior Architecture, Content Management and Value Creation, Entertainment Management and Production, Hospitality and Tourism Industry Management, and Entrepreneurship that lead to Master’s and Ph.D. degrees.

The University has two campuses: the City Campus (Kluaynamtai), located on Rama 4 Road in the heart of Bangkok, and the Rangsit Campus, located in Pathum Thani Province. The City Campus, home of Bangkok University International College, accommodates the Central Library, the Computer Center, classrooms, seminar rooms, faculty and administrative offices as well as other student services. International Relations

The University has good and long established relationships with international higher education institutions that lead to mutual collaboration and support in academic and cultural aspects. Examples are faculty and student exchange programs, as well as reciprocal visits by executives. Exchange students are eligible for a tuition fee waiver at participating institutions. Additionally, Bangkok University was the first higher education institution in Thailand to be invited to join the International Association of University Presidents (IAUP), for which Founding President Emeritus Dr. Charoen Kanthawongs and President Emeritus Dr. Thanu Kulachol, have served as General Secretary and Assistant General Secretary, respectively. In 2005, Dr. Thanu Kulachol, our former President and present President Emeritus, was the only delegate from the universities in Thailand who was invited to attend the Secretary-General’s Global Colloquium of University Presidents, held at Princeton University, New York, USA. The Colloquium was and still is an invitation-only meeting of some 25-30 BANGKOK UNIVERSITY INTERNATIONAL COLLEGE 27

university presidents from around the world. The topics of discussions for the year 2005 were “Academic Freedom” and “International Migration”. In 2006, Dr. Thanu Kulachol was invited for the second consecutive year to attend the 2nd meeting of the Secretary-General’s Global Colloquium of University Presidents, under the themes of “The Social Benefits of the Research University in the 21st Century” and “Innovative Sources of Funding Global Public Goods”. The event was hosted by the UN Secretary-General H.E. Mr. Kofi Annan with other 5 world-class university presidents in New York namely Columbia University, New York University, Princeton University, University of Pennsylvania and Yale University. In addition, in 2007, President Dr. Mathana Santiwat was invited by the UN Secretary-General H.E. Mr. Ban KiMoon to attend the Secretary-General’s Global Colloquium of University Presidents, hosted by New York University, New York, USA. The 2007 meeting addressed the themes of the “Global Climate Change” and “Setting the Post-Kyoto Agenda for Climate Policy”. In 2012, President Dr. Mathana Santiwat attended the Sixth Global Colloquium of University Presidents hosted by Columbia University, New York, USA. The 2012 meeting focused on the “Global Effects of the Youth Population Surge: Addressing the Needs of the Largest Generation of Young People the World Has Ever Known”. In terms of quality development in learning, teaching, and personnel, as well as faculty and student exchange, the University currently operates in partnership with the following leading international higher education institutions:

At present, the libraries on both campuses hold 156,415 titles with 352,417 books, including a rare collection of 833 law books, 470 Thai journals, 212 English journals and 5 eJournals. In addition, 10,024 titles of multimedia materials with 18,667 volumes are available. Over 500 computer terminals with internet connection are available. The Library opens seven days a week during 7.30 -21.00 hours from Monday to Saturday, 9.00 – 19.00 hours on Sundays at City Campus and 7.30-19.00 hours at Rangsit Campus. Computer technology is vital to the development of teaching, learning and research. The Computer Center enhances such development by using a central network that relies on the fast multi-gigabit ethernet system which is efficiently accommodating the growing demand of the student users as well as that of the faculty and administrative staff. The computer development and maintenance staff includes technical experts in many sub-fields. They are ready at all times to assist students and users on an individual and group basis. Bangkok University Computer Center has its

very own team of developers to custom design programs that keep enhancing the efficiency and quality of the University’s education as well as the operation of the administrative units. The Computer Center has developed an internet-based student registration service that allows students to register, arrange class schedules, and check grade reports online. Students are welcome to visit the Computer Center on Floor 7 of Dr. Charoen Kanthawongs Building on City Campus or visit the website at compcenter.bu.ac.th Internet Service

Information technology has been one top priority in the University’s development, which includes providing an educational networking resource that is accessible to all students. Every student at Bangkok University has access to Internet, which runs at 1.4 Gbps. More than 100 computer servers and 6,000 computer terminals are available. The URSA Online (University Records System Access) offers services to check courses offered, class schedule, grades and personal information, to register on-line and receive grade report via mobile devices. In addition to teaching, Bangkok University aims to promote academic and social services to students, faculty and public. Seminars, workshops and conferences are organized in the-state-of-the-art seminar facilities. Supporting Student Services Student Counselling and Job Placement

The Counselling Office has experienced personnel who offer confidential consultation on academic planning, course selection, personal and social adjustment problems, and assistance to students in crisis. Each new student is also assigned a faculty advisor with whom academic and personal problems may be discussed. The Career Center, a part of the Counselling Office, gives assistance and advice on job placement, self-preparation for job applications as well as information on availability in the job market. Students may also consult the Center about pursuing further education locally or abroad.

For the best cost-effective benefits, the University provides students with accident insurance with 24-hour coverage and a low-premium policy. The insurance covers injuries, disabilities and death. Health insurance is also available. Medical Services

The University Clinic on each campus has full-time doctors and nurses ready at all times to attend to minor and intermediate cases. Medicines are available by prescription. Those cases that require hospital consultancy will be referred to one of the contracted hospitals in town at the University’s expense. Should there be an emergency occurring to students while representing the University in any circumstance, all the medical expenses will be borne by the University. Dining on Campus

The University has one larger cafeteria on City Campus and three at Rangsit Campus. The BU Cafeteria is newly opened at the BU Landmark Complex. The cafeterias offer a wide selection of food of good standard as well as good hygiene. The Department of Student Welfare and Services

together with Student Union observe rigid control over the contracted food vendors to guarantee the quality of meals on campus. Students and visitors to Rangsit Campus may choose to dine in a modernly designed and lively atmosphere of BU Restaurant and Cafe, where bakery, beverage and international luncheon are served on weekdays by students of the Hotel Management Department. /

Recreational Facilities Fitness Center & Gymnasium

Bangkok University has long been active in promoting sports and health consciousness among its students, faculty and staff. As a result, Bangkok University dedicates a whole floor connected to its main office building on City Campus to an indoor fitness center and a gymnasium. Rangsit Campus has, apart from an indoor fitness center, a full-scale outdoor football field, basketball, volleyball, sepak takraw and tennis courts, as well as a fitness park where one can enjoy working out on the green. The University’s sports facilities are also often used as the venues of regular intramural and intercollegiate competitions. Bangkok University Gallery

The Bangkok University Gallery is located on the 2nd and 4th floor of BU International Building at the City Campus and the 2nd floor of Surat Osathanugrah Library at the Rangsit Campus. The Southeast Asian Ceramics Museum, located on the underground floor of the Surat Osathanugrah Library has a collection of over 2,500 pieces of Sukhothai, Lanna, Burmese, Vietnamese, Japanese and Chinese ceramics. In addition to the permanent exhibition, special exhibition room, research room, workshop on artifact restoration, souvenir and book shop as well as special collection library are available to curators, students and public. Charity Play

The charity play is an annual play, since 1988, organized by the student committee of the School of Communication Arts. Performers and staff are recruited from the students of this school. Students in the School of Law have an office on City Campus to offer legal consultation to the community without any charge. The advantages are for the students to practice law and serve the people and for the public to have access to free legal assistance in the neighborhood. To ensure quality consultancy, law faculty experts closely supervise the students’ counseling service. Student Development

For personal development and career advancement, the University organizes a seminar each year to train student leaders in leadership skills and the spirit of teamwork. Alumni Association

The Alumni Association has operated officially since August 26, 1974. The main purpose of the association is to enable former students to remain in contact with the University and to further nurture the friendships of their years at Bangkok University. ACADEMIC REGULATIONS AND PROCEDURES Academic System

Readmission Requirements

Bangkok University offers classes to students with two major semesters (14 weeks each) and one summer session (five weeks for day students, and eight weeks for evening students) per academic year. The summer session for day students is optional. It is normally offered to students who wish to repeat their failed courses in regular programs, or to those who fail to take courses offered only in a certain semester as indicated in the study plan of their major.

Former students seeking readmission to Bangkok University must have good academic and conduct records and contact the University one month before the upcoming academic year. They must not have left the University for a period longer than five years.

Readmission of Students

Any student who withdraws or leaves before the completion of the course of study may be readmitted by notifying the Records Office before the opening of the new academic year. Students have to give their grounds for readmission to the Director of the Records Office for approval. Readmitted students must complete the University’s current curriculum. The previously earned credits will be evaluated only on those relevant or applicable to the credits of the practical courses. Further readjustment to the present curriculum will be considered by the Dean of Bangkok University International College or Vice President for Bangkok University International College.

Classification of Students

1. Students are obliged to register within the preregistration period and pay for tuition and fees before the deadline indicated on the registration receipt. 2. Registration in a course with pre-requisite requirements must meet the requirements, otherwise the registration will be cancelled. 3. Students may register for up to 22 credits, but not less than 12 credits in the first and second semesters. For summer term, students may register for up to 9 credits. 4. Students who cannot register for courses within the pre-registration period by themselves are advised to authorize a guardian or a friend to register at the Records Office on their behalf during the pre-registration period. 5. Students who fail to register during the pre-registration period can seek an approval from the Dean of BU International for late registration within the first week of each semester. However, late registration is subject to the availability of courses. 6. Probationary students must receive an approval from a counselor at the Counseling Department prior to registration. 7. Students who do not want to register in the first or second semester must apply for an academic leave or their student status will be terminated.

An “I” grade must be changed to a completed grade within three weeks after the grade is announced. Otherwise, the grade will automatically become an “F”. U indicates unsatisfactory (the particular course must be repeated to attain grade “S”). NC indicates non-credit registration (the student is granted special permission to attend class with no credits earned). Grade Point Average Computation

Both the grade report and the transcript indicate the academic record for each semester. The grade point average is computed by dividing the total number or grade points by the total number of credits attempted. All failures will be recorded on the student’s permanent record and wil be used in calculating the cumulative grade point average. The following diagram illustrates the GPA computation.

Attendance

Students are expected to attend classes regularly since their attendance will be checked and recorded in every class period. Absence of no less than 20% of the total class time will be tolerated. In case of ailments, students must submit a doctor’s certificate to the instructor for verification. Students ignoring the rules and processes will not be permitted to sit for the final examination in that particular course and will have to repeat the course. Plagiarism Policy

The University has a strict policy laid down to stress the paramount need for discipline while in the quest for knowledge. Any student found deliberately violating the set regulations will have more than 20 points deducted from his/her credit. This may result in disqualification from the examination. Students who fail in core courses must repeat the courses until they pass. Failure in free electives gives the students a choice of repeating them or enrolling in other free electives. Repetition of courses is permitted for courses marked with “D” or lower.

Academic Evaluation

Academic Leave

The academic evaluation of students is normally undertaken at the end of each semester, except for first year students whose assessment will be done at the end of the second semester. Credits earned during a summer session will be calculated in the following semester. Regular students are expected to attain a GPA of not less than 1.75. Probationary students are those who obtain a GPA of less than 1.75.

Students eligible for academic leave must complete at least one semester and obtain a GPA of not less than 2.00. Two consecutive semesters are the maximum period for each particular leave. Students must pay fees to maintain their educational opportunities. Students on academic leave may apply for readmission by reporting to the Records Office before the day of actual registration. Any academic leave effective after the first two weeks from the first day of each semester will result in a letter symbol “W” recorded in the transcript.

Failure and Repetition

Termination of Student Status

Students are subject to termination from the program in the following instances: 1. Students with a cumulative grade point average of less than 1.50 assessed at the end of each semester (with the exception of the first semester of first year students) 2. Probationary students with a cumulative grade point average of less than 1.75 evaluated at the end of each academic year

Transfer of School/Field of Study

A student who wishes to transfer from his/her current school to a new school must have completed a minimum of two semesters in his/her former school. To qualify for a transfer, the student must submit a request form giving reasons to get the committee’s approval. He/she has to make sure that all the procedures have been followed to ensure registration in the next semester. Completed

courses in which credits can be transferred must have a course content equivalent to that required in the curriculum of the new school. Preparatory English Course (IEN 001)

Both overseas and Thai students who have good command of English may request exemption from IEN 001. Their scores on an English Proficiency Test (TOEFL, IELTS) must prove satisfactory; however, a placement test can also be arranged. Applicants who are unable to show a sufficient minimun score on a recognized English proficiency test such as TOEFL, SAT, or IELTS are required to take IEN 001. This course is designed to improve the student’s English proficiency and to prepare him or her for the program. The regular academic length of the course is 10 weeks. Students who do not perform satisfactorily will not be admitted into the regular academic program. Re-enrollment in IEN 001 will be required. Students who fail IEN 001 twice will be suspended from the program. Preparatory Mathematics Course (IMA 001)

Students who already have sufficient background knowledge in mathematics at the high school level and/or have obtained satisfactory scores in the Mathematics part of the Entrance Examination as well as in other achievement tests will be exempted from IMA 001. Bangkok University International College students who fail to prove their mathematics knowledge are also required to

take IMA 001 in order to prepare for their academic studies at the university level. Those who do not pass IMA 001 will be admitted into Bangkok University International College under provisional status. The re-enrollment in IMA 001 will be required and there will be a restriction on the size of the academic load. Academic Dishonesty

Academic dishonesty includes such practices as cheating in the examination or doing any act proved to be dishonest. Any student proved dishonest will receive “F” for the course in which cheating was discovered, and W for remaining courses in that semester. He/she is liable to be suspended for one academic year. This period includes the summer session. In a serious case, the student will be dismissed. Graduation

All students eligible to apply for graduation must be able to maintain a minimum GPA of 2.00 within the time limit. Diploma

Students who have completed the program and earned a GPA ranging from 1.50 - 1.99 can only apply for a diploma.

Introduction to the fundamental tools of digital media production. This course will cover the technical processes of the variety of Vector formats, their particular functions and their creation and manipulation for effect. HRI 353 Basic Flower Arrangement

This course covers theories, components, principles and basic knowledge of flower arrangement, characteristics, maintenance and equipment, as well as selections of proper vases for flower designs and eastern and western arrangements. Emphasis is on an integration of theories and practice to provide students with essential knowledge for creating different styles of flower arrangements. HRI 355 Recreation and Entertainment Management

This course covers principles of recreation and entertainment businesses and practice of the leadership skills necessary to enhance operational efficiency responding to the tourists’ needs. HRI 356 MICE Management

Professional English Courses (15 Credits) HRI 371 English for Hotel

This course studies an intermediate level English used in hotel departments such as reception, banquet, housekeeping, public relations, sales and marketing through the practice of writing correspondence and internal memos, and the practice of communicative skills. This course studies English structure and vocabulary used in the service industry such as hotel, cruise, restaurant, and spa. The course encourages students to practice listening, speaking, reading, and writing skills relating to daily conversation. Students will also practice working in simulated situations. HRI 372 English for Hospitality Industry

HRI 373 English for Room Division Operations

This course provides students with essential English knowledge required to work in room division operations. Students will become more familiar with English expressions practiced in daily work routines as well as technical terms of the industry. Students will have opportunities to sharpen their listening and speaking skills by practicing simulated situations and reinforce writing and reading skills by dealing with relevant hotel documents. The aim of this course is to provide students with the skills needed to understand foreign guests and interact with them in a proper manner.

The course aims to introduce students to techniques and methods of food carving, especially vegetables and fruits. Students learn how to prepare materials and gain hands-on knowledge of equipment, as well as the application of art in food carving. Theoretical and practical study allow students to employ the skills and knowledge obtained from class to real-life dish decorations.

HRI 386 Hotel and Tourism in ASEAN

The course enhances understanding of the hotel and tourism business operations in ASEAN nations, environmental factors and changes affecting the business successes, opportunities and obstacles encountered in the business in each country, and business trends in this region. Business case studies are also included. The course emphasizes a thorough study of relevant topics and matters in the hotel and restaurant business. Students are able to study and conduct research at any overseas or local academic institution. Individualized study is carried out under faculty supervision. HRI 382 Food Styling

This course provides knowledge of food styling methods and techniques used in various cultures and the application of edible and inedible materials to garnish the food and decorate the dining table. Both theoretical and practical learning methods will be emphasized. HRI 383 Fusion Food

This course combines theory and practice to teach about the uniqueness of foods from various cultures, with the aim of developing an understanding of how to combine foods from different cultures to become fusion food. HRI 384 Verrines and Plated Dessert

This subject offers tips and techniques for verrines and plated desserts. Students will also learn how to use different types of sauces to draw a decorative plate. The course will cover both theory and practice.

Professional Internship Courses HRI 265 Internship 1

(6 Credits)

Students are allowed to do an internship either in Thailand or overseas. Internship based study enables students to adapt theoretical knowledge to real life situations in hotel, restaurant, cruise, spa business. The Thai Hotel Association, Thai Chamber of Commerce and other service-related work placements. Students are required to complete at least 400 working hours. The internship is monitored and evaluated under cooperation between the Department of Tourism and Hotel Studies and the work placement accepting organization.

The course covers a development of communicative English skills (listening, speaking, reading, and writing) to prepare students to successfully study the principles of management and operations of the international hotel and restaurant industry in English.

HRI 466 Cooperative Education in Hotel and Restaurant Industry

Prerequisite: CO 301 Pre-Cooperative Education Students study the practical working system in a workplace through being an employee. The course is designed to prepare students to be ready for professional careers by working in principle and systematic operations. Students are required to work full time for at least a semester of 16 weeks. The assigned work must be of high quality or work that provides practical experience in the students’ major fields of study or a proposed project or work that benefits an organization as a whole. The Cooperative education will be monitored and evaluated under cooperation between the school departments and the work placements. Students are required to submit an evaluation report at the end of the placement.
