COURSE STRUCTURE
These modules are: • Quantitative Methods • Introduction to Business & Management • Management & Financial Accounting • Introduction to Economics • Business Study Skills • Introduction to Marketing • Financial Markets & Institutions This common syllabus also means that Single Honours students have complete flexibility to switch between any of these programmes any time up to and including the start of Year 2.
All our Single Honours degree courses follow the same compulsory modules in Year 1*, enabling you to build a firm foundation in the core disciplines of business education: accounting, banking, finance, business, management and marketing.
In Years 2 and 3, you will start to follow more course-specific modules, including optional modules, some of which may be taken outside the Business School. Many of our subjects can also be studied in combination with a subject from another academic school, such as a modern language, to form a Joint Honours degree course. See p.24 for further information. *EXCEPT BA Business & Law – see page 22.
BANGOR BUSINESS SCHOOL
bangor.ac.uk/business
8 COURSE STRUCTURE
HOW WILL I BE TAUGHT? Teaching is by mix of lectures, seminars and tutorials. Typically, you will have around 12 hours’ contact time per week. You will need to spend some of your remaining time in private study, doing assignments, preparing for exams or undertaking research. Each semester contains 11 or 12 weeks when lectures and classes take place. These are followed by a short period for revision, and an assessment period, which lasts for 2 weeks at the end of Semester 1, and 3-4 weeks at the end of Semester 2.
HOW WILL I BE ASSESSED?
Most modules are assessed by a mixture of coursework (or other continuous assessment) and examination. Coursework will normally account for 25–40% and examinations for 60–75% of the final mark; however, there may be a few exceptions. The pass mark in all assessments is 40%.
WHAT IS THE DIFFERENCE BETWEEN BA AND BSc? BSc schemes include a weightier quantitative element (e.g. modules in statistics or probability). They may therefore be better suited to students with a mathematical background, but this is not a pre-requisite.
bangor.ac.uk/business
In terms of employability, there is no distinct advantage to choosing one scheme over the other, unless you want to enter a profession which involves quantitative analysis – accountancy or taxation, for example.
9 SINGLE HONOURS DEGREES
SINGLE HONOURS DEGREES
Joint Honours Many of our subjects can also be studied alongside History, Social Policy, Sociology, Psychology, Sport Science or a European language in a Joint Honours programme. See page 24 for further details.

You do not have to be studying a language to undertake one of these exchanges, and Bangor University offers three options which range from summer programmes to a year abroad. International Experience Year
Studying or working abroad as part of your degree is the opportunity of a lifetime. By spending time in another country, you will experience new cultures, make new friends, gain a global perspective on your subject and learn a new language. Best of all, you will enhance your employability by developing new skills and becoming more motivated, confident and independent.
This is our most popular programme, where students add an extra year onto their degree and spend that additional year studying or working abroad. You will not be charged any additional tuition fees by Bangor University and you will not be asked to pay tuition fees abroad either. Students who successfully complete an International Experience Year have ‘with International Experience’ added to their degree title.
Substitute Programme
If you do not want to add a year to your degree, you may be able to go abroad on our ‘Substitute’ programme. The exchange will happen during your second year, and you can choose to spend the entire second year abroad or just one semester. This is a study only option, and the credits you gain abroad will be transferred back to your degree programme at Bangor.
Summer Programmes
If you would like to spend only a short time abroad, you can apply to take part in one of our international Summer Programmes. These are cultural programmes lasting between two and six weeks, which take place at our partner universities in South Korea and China. For further information about our study and work abroad options, visit www.bangor.ac.uk/international/ exchanges/outgoing
