Will you remember Bangor University with a gift in your will?

With your support, we can shape the future.

Bangor University Legacy Programme (1884 Circle)

Building on our heritage

“The generous commitments of our legacy donors enable us to plan for the future with confidence.”

Founded in 1884, Bangor University, known then as the University College of North Wales, is one of the UK’s oldest research-led degree-awarding institutions. The University was funded by quarrymen and farmers who wanted to give the people of North Wales the opportunity to access higher education. In what might be described as an early example of a crowdfunding campaign, those who had worked the rock and ploughed the earth for generations donated, via penny subscriptions, towards the formation of a university – a place that would enable inquiring minds to flourish.

Bangor University is a research-led, globally connected institution which provides outstanding education in a wide range of disciplines in arts and humanities, social sciences, education, law, business, environmental sciences, ocean sciences, physical sciences, health and medicine.

Our students are taught by inspirational teaching staff and leading researchers. It is important for our students to have transferable skills to enable them to excel once they leave the University. Creating a positive and life-enhancing environment

for our students is fundamental to their education and it underpins an exceptional wider student experience. Bangor University has an outstanding international reputation while being an institution that is deeply rooted within the local community, and within Welsh culture and language.

I would like you to consider the impact you could have on our ongoing excellence by pledging a bequest. Legacy gifts support various aspects of our work, including scholarships, bursaries, academic equipment, and student support. The generous commitments of our legacy donors enable us to plan for the future with confidence.

Bangor University has a proud history of success, and with your support, our future will be even more promising.

Thank you.

Your investment in our future

Our cutting-edge research informs our teaching and helps advance our collective understanding of the world around us.

The University, home to around 10,000 students and nearly 2,000 members of staff, is renowned in the UK and internationally for both outstanding teaching and research across a spectrum of academic disciplines.

Why leave a gift in my will?

Alumni and friends are asked to consider including a gift to Bangor University in their will for various reasons. You might feel grateful for the financial support that enabled your studies or the education that advanced your career. Perhaps you wish to honour your own or a loved one’s time here, or you may simply have a passion for education. Regardless of your motivation, your gift can profoundly affect current and future students. Including a gift to Bangor University in your will costs you nothing now but will leave a lasting legacy for generations to come.

The University’s financial needs vary from year to year, as it receives funding from many different sources for many areas of work. Unrestricted, general purpose legacies give Bangor the flexibility to invest in the programmes and facilities that are most needed when gifts are received. Your general purpose legacy will help to

ensure Bangor’s future excellence and competitiveness in an ever-changing world. You may have an affinity for a specific area - such as an academic school, a research programme or student support - or you may wish to preserve the memory of your own name or that of a family member by funding a specific award.

Over time, academic schools/colleges and research areas will change; so, it is best to avoid stipulating very specific purposes for your gift that may prevent it from being used. To avoid this situation, you might want to consider including a provision in your will that allows the University to use your legacy in a similar area, or where there is an urgent need for financial support.

The Development and Alumni Relations Office team would be pleased to discuss how Bangor can honour your wishes.

“A lasting legacy for generations to come.”

Legacies at work

“Ms Mair Roberts’ legacy will support early research which is crucial in the ongoing work to develop safe and effective ways to treat and ultimately cure cancer. It will make a significant difference to the efficiency of our work, enabling us to perform experiments on a larger scale more accurately and reproducibly on multiple cancer cell types.

As these pieces of equipment are used in the pharmaceutical industry it will also help our students make the smooth transition from academia to industry should they choose to pursue that career path.”

Dr Jonathan Blank (Senior Lecturer, North Wales Medical School)

“Prof Miles’ scholarship helped fund my graduate studies and some of my postdoctoral work at Bangor University. This work focused on understanding literacy difficulties in children with singular and cooccurring neurodevelopmental disorders. I continue this work today and this work has now also evolved to include intervention research which is already helping children with literacy difficulties across the UK, very much in the same vein as Prof Miles’ work of aligning research and practice. Now, as a Lecturer in the Department of Education at the University of York, I am so very grateful to Prof Miles’ scholarship for providing me with the opportunity to develop and shape my fulfilling work, which might not have been possible otherwise.”

Dr. Cameron Downing (former PHD scholar of the Prof. Tim Miles’ legacy)

If you prefer to leave your legacy for a specific purpose, please consider supporting one of the following priority areas of need:

North Wales Medical School

Bangor University has established a new independent Medical School, the North Wales Medical School. Developed from a shared vision with Betsi Cadwaladr University Health Board (BCUHB) the School builds on a world leading foundation of impact-based research and scientific progress that delivers first class education, robust skills portfolios and service development, improving health outcomes and driving economic ambition. The North Wales Medical School will grow to recruit 140 students each year, providing a major boost to regional medical staffing needs and NHS Wales. Our ambition is to establish a new facility for the School bringing provision to a single high-quality location which delivers an excellent student experience, effective interprofessional collaboration, and an environment which transforms our research and life sciences capacities.

Legacies supporting the North Wales Medical School will help the university train its students to be excellent doctors for Wales and beyond by providing highquality teaching and an inspiring learning experience based on increased clinical contact and award-winning clinical teaching at the University Health Board.

Student support – both undergraduate and postgraduate

Bangor University is committed to enrolling talented students and ensuring that they can explore all the opportunities available to them, irrespective of their financial circumstances. Generous scholarship and bursary awards provision helps Bangor both to attract outstanding undergraduate and postgraduate students and to ensure that they thrive during their time here.

Legacies in support of student awards will help to transform the lives of future generations of Bangor students.

Research support

Bangor’s academic schools demonstrate world leading expertise in a diverse range of subjects. The success of Bangor’s academic environment hinges on top quality research, supported by excellent resources. Many donors support academic posts and programmes, giving schools the flexibility to explore new areas of research.

Legacies in support of Bangor’s research mission will help to ensure that this work continues to be of national and international significance, providing innovative solutions for the challenges of tomorrow.

When

should I make a will? A will is an effective legal document, which can help to safeguard those people and organisations that you wish to support.

Making a will is an important act. It’s an opportunity for you to do something exceptional and make a lasting difference. Without a will, the law sets out clear intestacy rules as to how your estate is distributed, which may not be in line with your wishes.

When you decide to make a will you should consult a solicitor, who will provide you with professional help to ensure that your plans maximise the amount your beneficiaries receive. It is important that you keep your will updated to take account of changing circumstances.

The following pages contain information about types of legacies, directing your support, amending existing wills and the University’s charitable status.

What type of gift can I leave in my will:

When making a gift in your will, you can specify what type of gift you would like to leave. The four main types of legacy gifts are:

Pecuniary - a gift of a specific sum of money

Such a gift decreases in value with inflation from the time the will is written. This can be avoided by linking it to the Retail Prices Index or setting aside a percentage of your estate (see Residuary Legacy below).

Specific - a gift of a specific property or asset

Examples include: property, stocks and shares, paintings or other valuables.

Residuary - a gift of the residue of your estate or a share of it

Once you have made your pecuniary and specific gifts you will be left with the residue of your estate. You may give the whole of the residue to a particular person or organisation, or you may divide it between several beneficiaries. The advantage of this type of legacy is that it will not be eroded by inflation.

Reversionary - the giving of assets to a chosen beneficiary, whilst giving a named person the benefit of them during her or his lifetime. For example, this type of gift could enable a spouse to continue living in a house which you own until he or she dies, with the capital then passing to the University.

By making a will, you ensure that your

lifetime’s

wealth continues to provide for others.

Suggested wording for your legacy

The following paragraphs provide examples of the wording you may wish to use in your will. The Development and Alumni Relations Office would be pleased to provide further advice and answer any questions you might have. In all cases, we recommend that the wording is carefully reviewed by you and your solicitor in the context of your will.

This text is provided for guidance purposes only and is not intended to replace legal or other professional advice.

*Please contact the Development and Alumni Relations Office, DARO, for suggested wording should you wish to protect your Pecuniary Legacy from inflation, by linking it to the Retail Prices Index.

Reversionary

The tax treatment of reversionary bequests is complicated so, you should discuss your plans with finance and legal professionals, who can advise you on the necessary wording for your will.

Amending existing wills — writing a codicil If you already have a will, a member of the Development and Alumni Relations Office would be happy to explain how a simple change may be made using a codicil.

What are the tax advantages of leaving a gift in my will?

By leaving a legacy to Bangor, you can reduce the taxable value of assets in your estate and therefore cut the amount of inheritance tax due.

Bangor University has full charitable status and all gifts and bequests to the University are completely exempt from UK inheritance tax. Bangor University’s Charity Commission Number is 1141565. If you live outside of the United Kingdom, please consult your adviser for further information on the tax status of bequests made to UK charities.
