New International Scholarships... Bangor University is offering a new generous scholarship package for students applying for 2014/15 entry:

Bangor - Chevening Scholarships In a new partnership between Bangor University and Chevening, the UK Government’s Scholarship programme, 3 prestigious scholarships have been established to support the study of any Masters degree at Bangor University (excluding MBA) in 2014/15. The scholarship includes a full tuition fee waiver valued at up to £14,000 and a living and travel allowance valued at close to £12,000. Candidates should submit an application for admission to Bangor University and also a scholarship application to Chevening. Please refer to the Chevening website for details of eligibility, how to apply and regional deadlines for applications: www.chevening.org

• Every successful Undergraduate candidate will be considered for a scholarship of between £2,000 - £5,000 per year of study, which ultimately will be valued between £6,000 - £15,000 for the total duration of undergraduate study. • Every successful Postgraduate Taught candidate will be considered for a scholarship of £2,500 or higher, there are also full fee waiver scholarships available for Postgraduate taught candidates. • Every successful Postgraduate Research candidate will be considered for a scholarship of between £2,500 - £5,000 per year of study, which ultimately will be valued between £7,500 - £15,000 for the total duration of study.

China Scholarship Council (CSC) Bangor Scholarship Scheme Bangor University is working with the China Scholarship Council (CSC) to offer 5 scholarships to enable talented Chinese students to undertake fully funded PhD programmes at Bangor University. Bangor’s International Footprint Strengthening Links in the USA... In September, a delegation from Bangor University including Vice Chancellor Professor John Hughes, Professors Colin Jago, Chris Richardson, Carol Tulley and Maggie Parke from the International Education Centre travelled to Williamsburg, Virginia USA.

January intake at Bangor, new for 2014... Bangor University are pleased to announce that there is now a January intake for various Masters degrees within the following schools at Bangor University:

• Bangor Business School • School of Law

There, they celebrated 12 years of student mobility and academic cooperation between Bangor's School of Ocean Science, and the college of William and Mary's Virginia Institute of Marine Science (VIMS).

A busy week in China... Vice Chancellor, Professor John Hughes had a busy week in China in September. He was a guest speaker at the Asia Europe Economic Forum held in Xi’an city. He gave a keynote speech on sustainability development sharing Bangor’s experiences in working with some of the most prestigious Chinese Universities and Research Institutes. Taking advantage of being in China, Professor Hughes also met with Mr BAI Zhangde, Director-General of Chinese Service Centre for Scholarly Exchange (CSCSE) in Beijing. Bangor University has been in partnership with CSCSE since 2011, working with a number of Study Abroad Centres in China. A small number of students progress into their 2nd year at Bangor Business

School from Beijing Foreign Studies University, Southwesten University of Finance and Economics and Tianjin Normal University. Two exciting joint workshops are planned between Bangor and CSCSE – a workshop on “Working in Partnership” during the American International Education Association (AIAE) annual conference in Washington DC in February 2014, and “Preparation for Success” during the China Study Abroad Forum in March 2014. Professor Hughes also had productive meetings with the President of Huanghua University, a long-standing partner of Bangor Business School and the President of Xi’an Foreign Studies University.

New Science Park Development led by Bangor University... The Deputy Head of Mission to the German Ambassador to the UK, Dr Rudolf Adam visited the University recently, along with Dr Bernd Atenstaedt, Chairman and Chief Executive of German Industry UK.

New research links in Indonesia

The main purpose of the visit was to explore the potential for German Industry Collaboration in relation to the Menai Science Park development. The concept of the ‘Science Park’ essentially involves the creation of a dedicated site linking leading-edge academic research and commercial development to the benefit of the local and national economy. Menai Science Park aims to make a contribution to improving and strengthening the economy of North Wales and to stimulate the creation of high value jobs. Vice-Chancellor, Professor John G Hughes, said:

“This is an outstanding opportunity, and the University is delighted to play a full and active part. Economic regeneration is vitally important for this area of Wales, and the University will do everything possible to make this venture a major success.” Current major employers in North West Wales include Siemens and RWENpower with opportunities for new companies to be introduced to the region and located on the Science Park.

Bangor’s MSc Forestry students head to Uganda...

Following on from a very successful field course in Tanzania last summer (2012), July-August 2013 saw Bangor University’s second cohort of Commonwealth Scholarship Commission (CSC) funded distance-learning MSc Forestry students attend this year’s version in Uganda’s Budongo Forest Reserve. Thirteen CSC scholars hailing from South Asia, Africa, and the Caribbean, were joined by the first student on our new MSc Tropical Forestry by distance learning programme, delivered in conjunction with Copenhagen University (picture above). In addition, seventeen other MSc students and seven staff from Bangor and its partner universities in the Erasmus Mundus Sustainable Tropical Forestry (SUTROFOR) Programme – Copenhagen, Dresden, Montpellier and Padua – took part in the twoweek-long event. Budongo Forest Reserve is located in the west of Uganda, close to the shores of Lake Albert. It lies at the northern extent of the Albertine Rift – a globally-important area for conservation given the rich diversity of its flora and fauna, with many species endemic to the region.

Dr Morag McDonald from the School of Environment, Natural Resources and Geography and Lindsy Jones from the Research and Enterprise Office at Bangor University attended the British Council Research and Innovation conference in Jakarta in September. A partnership with a research proposal on mine reclamation was formed during the conference between Bangor University, a consortium of Indonesian universities and Bukit Amas, which is a major Indonesian company. Potential research collaboration on tackling Tuburculosis with Indonesia Universities will also be the focus of the research. HRH Prince Andrew, Duke of York also attended the three day conference.
