Over 125 years of excellence... A top 40 UK university as listed in the Times Higher Education World University rankings 2012-13 Why study at Bangor?

World leading research

There are numerous ranking systems used in the UK to assess the quality of universities and it can often be confusing for students when deciding which factors to consider. However, in Bangor’s case it could not be simpler, we are ranked in the top 5% of the World’s universities (Times Higher Education World University Rankings). This reflects not just the high quality of teaching and research but also student satisfaction ratings, standard of facilities on offer and the considerable investment which we make in supporting each and every student.

Every 5-6 years the UK Government organises an analysis of all research conducted at British universities. This analysis is called the Research Assessment Exercise (RAE). During the most recent RAE, Bangor University proved to be among the very top universities in the UK. The RAE identified world leading research in all of Bangor’s 19 assessed subject areas with nearly 50% given the top grading.

Areas of particular excellence include Accounting and Finance which is ranked No.1 in the UK, and Electronic Engineering which is ranked No.2 in the UK.

For more than 125 years, students from all over the world have graduated from Bangor and as a result have achieved great success in their chosen careers. Today, the University offers over 250 undergraduate / Bachelor degrees, more than 150 courses at postgraduate level and research in around 40 unique areas.

Investing in your future... IT Support

The Bangor Experience

Our IT Services department provides all students at the University with a range of services, facilities and benefits – to support either your learning activities, your research or your social & family life.

Here at Bangor we perform consistently well in student surveys. We were ranked 14th in the UK in the Times Higher Education Student Experience Survey 2011 and were placed in the top 10 for the WhatUni? Student Choice Awards for Accommodation in 2011.

IT Services provide access to the internet, a University email account and a safe place to store your work (which is backed up every night). The department also provide access to Bangor Portal where you can upload your coursework and see your module marks so you can submit your coursework from anywhere in the world.

The University operates an informal ‘open-door policy’ which enable students to have access to staff so that they feel comfortable and supported. This high level of personal contact is reflected in our student to staff ratio, which at 16:1 makes it one of the most favourable in the UK. As a result of these systems Bangor is rated one of the top universities in the UK for student support. (Times Higher Educational Supplement).

As for your family and social life, we’ll help you stay in touch via email and instant messaging applications which will allow you to conduct ‘conversations’ with those you care for, who aren’t with you here in Bangor!

Learning resources To help you in your studies we provide a range of learning resources supported by experienced staff. We provide Library, Archives, Computing, Media and Reprographics facilities and services. We have eight libraries, purpose built Media facilities and a Printing and Binding Unit. We also have a £3.5 million ocean-going Research Ship, a Natural History Museum, Botanic Gardens, a Centre for Hill and Upland Management, a Multimedia Language Centre, special library collections and one of the largest universitybased archives in the UK. The University’s online secure virtual learning environment ‘Blackboard’ is available on and off campus for all students. The whole Bangor experience has been great – it's the combination of the location, the people and the course. 10

Living in Bangor... When I typed Bangor, North Wales into Google, I found that the city is known as ‘The City of Learning’, I thought to myself, why not be a part of this learning? As my search went on I discovered that Bangor University is well established and was founded in 1884.

I knew I would be studying miles away from home, so I wanted the University to be like a second home and I really felt like it was my home away from home. The warm welcoming culture of the people around, the greenery and the structure, everything was so perfect that I fell in love with the place.

ANTHONY ALBUQUERQUE from India, studying Electronic Engineering

Postgraduate Courses... Postgraduate Taught Programmes Bangor’s teaching and research combined with high-quality facilities offer you world-class research and learning opportunities. Whether studying a taught postgraduate course or a postgraduate research degree, you will contribute to our research excellence. You’ll benefit from teaching of a high standard delivered by true experts in their field and be directly involved with cutting-edge research. Bangor University offers over 150 postgraduate courses. A postgraduate taught course (e.g. MA/MSc) provides you with specialist knowledge and advanced grounding in your chosen field, enhancing your employment and career prospects in today’s increasingly competitive job market.

A Research Masters (MRes) is more research orientated than a normal taught Masters programme and is a good route into PhD level study. A research degree such as a PhD will allow you to explore your chosen field under your own terms, driven by your own questions and intrigue under the guidance of an experienced research professional. Research degrees take one to two years for an MPhil qualification and three to four years for a PhD. More detailed information on all the postgraduate degree programmes offered by a specific department, including research interests, modular detail and admissions details can be found on our website. See www.bangor.ac.uk/courses/postgrad/index

Our Taught Masters programme usually last for one year and start in September. There is a January intake for those who wish to study at Bangor Business School’s London Centre.

Postgraduate research... Information for Postgraduate Research Applicants In this rapidly changing world, a Postgraduate research course can be used to serve many different needs and give you that extra edge that today’s employers are looking for. Whatever your own academic or professional goals, Bangor University’s long tradition of academic excellence will help to get you there.

MPhil/PhD study A PhD usually takes 3 years to complete on a full-time basis and 4-5 years if studied as a part-time programme. To obtain a PhD you are expected to conduct independent research that will make an original contribution to knowledge about that particular subject and present this in the form of a thesis. A MPhil will usually take 2 years to complete on a full-time programme and 3-5 years as a part-time programme. Research at MPhil level should represent an extension of existing knowledge, although the demands of originality are less than that for a PhD.

MRes The Research Masters degree is more researchorientated than a normal taught Masters programme, usually consisting of 120 credits research and 60 credits taught (66% / 34%). It is seen to be a good route into PhD level study. Bangor has a strong research base across a spectrum of academic disciplines engaging in research at national and international levels. The University provides strong support for research activities including encouraging links with commercial and industrial bodies in the UK and overseas. Applying for a PhD or MPhil If you are applying for a PhD /MPhil you need to have a good idea of the specific area or theme that you want to research. Before applying check the specialist area you wish to study is covered by a member of staff at Bangor by looking at our staff web pages at: www.bangor.ac.uk/courses/postgrad/research/ specialisms This will provide you with a breakdown of each staff members area of academic focus. Once you have found a member of staff whose research interests broadly match you own, you should contact them directly with a concise research ‘brief’ that outlines your proposal and ask whether he/she would consider supervising your project. If the academic expresses his/her interest, you may then further discuss your ideas and develop a full PhD/MPhil research proposal. At this stage, you should formally apply for the PhD/MPhil programme using the form available at www.bangor.ac.uk/courses/postgrad/apply You should fill the form out thoroughly, including academic references, your research proposal and the name of the academic member of staff under whose supervision you intend the research to be conducted.

Writing a good research proposal The purpose of your proposal is to show that you have a relevant theme, a viable project and the competence to carry it out. The information is vital when we evaluate your proposed study and decide if we have the right staff expertise to supervise you. The format and length of the proposal is likely to vary according to the type of project. Typically a proposal is no less than 1500 words (3-4 pages) long and will cover the following points.

Title

Methodology In this section describe your approach to collecting and analysing data. A proposal may plan to use existing data, gather primary data or do both. Explain the procedures and techniques you plan to use; the nature of the data; the methods of data sampling and collection; sources of information. Here you will demonstrate your knowledge of alternative social scientific methods and make the case that your approach is the most suitable for your research question. Consider questions of access to data sources and the skills that you will need to carry out the research.

This should be concise and descriptive.

Resources and ethical clearance

Background

Will your research comply with the agreed international standards for good practice in social research? Using published ethical guidelines show that you are aware of the specific documents and clearances you will need.

You should explain the context for your research, the issues it is concerned with, and the reasons why the research is important and original. You may need to describe how it builds on your previous academic work or professional experience. You must include references to the existing research and scholarly literature in your field of research. Statement of the problem or research questions. Clearly formulate the problem you propose to research. This should be expressed as an answerable question, or set of questions. The problem should be substantial but manageable within the timescale of a research degree and it should have originality.

Design of the project Describe how the project will be structured and where it will take place. Key design decisions (say between experimental, comparative, longitudinal or case study approaches) should be justified according to the way in which you have defined the research problem. If your project will be testing hypotheses you should state them here.

Project management You should map out a schedule for your project, from the start date onwards, showing when you expect to conduct periods of fieldwork (if applicable) and the time required for data analysis and writing up your results.

References You should include a list of the references cited in your proposal, using Harvard notation. This will be useful for potential supervisors to evaluate your knowledge of the research topic.

Low cost of living

Working Part-time

Market research shows that the cost of living in Bangor is much lower than in other parts of the UK. Bangor has been described as “one of the cheapest places in Britain” to be a student. (The A-Z of Universities and Higher Education Colleges)

The University’s JobZone offers a free service to help you find part-time employment. Work opportunities vary. Usual jobs for students include helping out in shops and at events and basic office assistance. International students can work up to 20 hours per week and full-time during the holidays. The University does not recommend you work the full 20 hours during the term because studying in the UK is intensive and you will need to make sure you have enough time to complete all your course work and reading to ensure success in your studies. The UK currently (from 1 October 2012) has a minimum wage of £6.19 per hour if you are aged 21 years or older and £4.98 per hour if you are aged 18-20.

Bangor is consistently ranked as one of the "best value" places to study in the UK in various cost-of-living surveys so you can be sure that you are getting the most from your money in Bangor. As a guide we would recommend that students allow up to £5,400 for undergraduate study and £7,200 for postgraduate study to cover accommodation, food and other personal expenses per year. This figure is a guide and will vary depending on the individual needs and lifestyle of each student.
