postgraduate research… MPhil/PhD Study A PhD usually takes 3 years to complete on a full-time basis and 4-5 years if studied as a part-time programme. To obtain a PhD you are expected to conduct independent research that will make an original contribution to knowledge about that particular subject and present this in the form of a thesis. A MPhil will usually take 2 years to complete on a full-time programme and 3-5 years as a parttime programme. Research at MPhil level should represent an extension of existing knowledge, although the demands of originality are less than that for a PhD.

MRes The Research Masters degree is more researchorientated than a normal taught Masters programme, usually consisting of 120 credits research and 60 credits taught (66% / 34%). It is seen to be a good route into PhD level study.

At this stage, you should formally apply for the PhD/MPhil programme using the form available at www.bangor.ac.uk/courses/postgrad/apply You should fill the form out thoroughly, including academic references, your research proposal and the name of the academic member of staff under whose supervision you intend the research to be conducted.

You can view a full list of research opportunities by subject area at: www.bangor.ac.uk/ international/courses/postgrad/research

Applying for a PhD or MPhil

Combined English Language and PhD Programme of Study

If you are applying for a PhD/MPhil you need to have a good idea of the specific area that you want to research. Before applying check the specialist area you wish to study is covered by a member of staff at Bangor by looking at our staff web pages at: www.bangor.ac.uk/ courses/postgrad/specialisms This will provide you with a breakdown of each staff members area of academic focus.

The programme will normally be 4 years in duration and will be in two parts: Part 1: Year 1 / The Preparatory Year. This will include English language tuition, academic study skills, regular meetings with the PhD supervisor and integration with other research students at the Academic School. During Part 1, you will research and write a full PhD research proposal based on the topic selected on the application form.

There are two routes for entry into postgraduate research study. 1. The PhD Programme of Study (3 years) 2. Combined English language and PhD Programme of Study (4 years)

Part 2: Years 1,2, and 3 of the PhD programme. Candidates undertake the research and submit the final dissertation at the end of Year 3.

Here you will demonstrate your knowledge of alternative social scientific methods and make the case that your approach is the most suitable for your research question. Consider questions of access to data sources and the skills that you will need to carry out the research.

Resources and ethical clearance Will your research comply with the agreed international standards for good practise in social research? Using published ethical guidelines show that you are aware of the specific documents and clearances you will need.

Project management You should map out a schedule for your project, from the start date onwards, showing when you expect to conduct periods of fieldwork (if applicable) and the time required for data analysis and writing up your results.

References You should include a list of the references cited in your proposal, using Harvard notation. This will be useful for potential supervisors to evaluate your knowledge of the research topic.

Design of the project

Which route should I choose?

I have a research proposal

The purpose of your proposal is to show that you have a relevant theme, a viable project and the competence to carry it out. The information is vital when we evaluate your proposed study and decide if we have the right staff expertise to supervise you.

Methodology

Progression from Part 1 to Part 2 will be conditional on having: Completed a fully developed research proposal that meets the Academic School’s requirement for entry onto a research degree. Achieved the required English language level required for entry onto a research degree. The duration of Part 1 will depend on the English language test score on entry, the English level required to progress onto the research degree / Part 2 and the completion of a satisfactory research proposal. The minimum score required is 4.0/4.5. As a guideline, students require 1 full year to increase by 2 IELTS bands e.g. from 4.5 to 6.5.

Describe how the project will be structured and where it will take place. Key design decisions (say between experimental, comparative, longitudinal or case study approaches) should be justified according to the way in which you have defined the research problem. If your project will be testing hypotheses you should state them here.

Bangor University International Guide 2014/15 www.bangor.ac.uk/international

A research degree is required to develop an academic career worldwide. Whatever your own academic or professional goals, Bangor University’s long tradition of academic excellence will help to get you there.

Bangor has a strong research base across a spectrum of academic disciplines engaging in research at national and international levels. The University provides strong support for research activities including encouraging links with commercial and industrial bodies in the UK and overseas.

Once you have found a member of staff whose research interests broadly match your own, you should contact them directly with a concise research ‘brief’ that outlines your proposal and ask whether he/she would consider supervising your project. If the academic expresses his/her interest, you may then further discuss your ideas and develop a full PhD/MPhil research proposal.

The PhD Programme of Study

postgraduate research… MPhil/PhD Study A PhD usually takes 3 years to complete on a full-time basis and 4-5 years if studied as a part-time programme.

Candidates undertake the research and submit the final dissertation at the end of Year 3.

living in Bangor…

A location fit for a prince… The Duke and Duchess of Cambridge have just recently moved back to Kensington Palace after living in Anglesey for the last three years, where the Prince was based as an RAF Search and Rescue Pilot. Anglesey is just five minutes away from Bangor and during the Prince’s visit to the annual ‘Anglesey Show’ the prince bid a final farewell to Anglesey.

Bangor is a beautiful city, it is situated on the coast of north Wales, the scenery is quite natural and beautiful – mountains, coastline and the snowdonia national park are all around me. it is just like paradise and an ideal place to study. that is why i am here.

i have never in my life known somewhere as beautiful and as welcoming as anglesey. catherine and i look forward to returning again and again over the coming years with our family. The Duke of Cambridge

living in Bangor…
