8 HOW WILL I BE TAUGHT
HOW WILL I BE ASSESSED? AT THE END OF YEAR 1 students must achieve marks of 40% or more in modules worth at least 80 credits (with no mark in any module below 30%) in order to progress to Year 2. If you fall short of this overall pass requirement, it is normally possible to take supplementary assessments in August to bring you up to the required standard. However, there is a minimum threshold, below which supplementary assessment is not permitted.
Most modules are assessed by mixture of coursework and examination. The pass mark in all assessments is 40%.
AT THE END OF YEAR 2 a similar set of rules determines progression to Year 3. AT THE END OF YEAR 3 your final degree classification depends on your overall mark: a weighted average of your Year 2 average mark (one-third weighting) and your Year 3 average mark (two-thirds weighting).
HOW WILL MY FINAL DEGREE CLASSIFICATION BE DETERMINED? Your final degree classification is determined by your overall mark as follows: OVERALL MARK %
FINAL DEGREE CLASSIFICATION
70+ 60 - 69 50 - 59 40 - 49 35 - 39
First Class honours or 1st Upper Second Class honours or 2:1 Lower Second Class honours or 2:2 Third Class honours or 3rd Ordinary degree or Pass degree

30 STUDY OR WORK ABROAD
STUDY OR WORK ABROAD Studying or working abroad as part of your degree is the opportunity of a lifetime. By spending time in another country, you will experience new cultures, make new friends, gain a global perspective on your subject and learn a new language. Best of all, you will enhance your employability by developing new skills and becoming more motivated, confident and independent. You do not have to be studying a language to undertake one of these exchanges, and Bangor University offers three options which range from summer programmes to a year abroad.
bangor.ac.uk/education
International Experience Year
This is our most popular programme, where students add an extra year onto their degree and spend that additional year studying or working abroad. You will not be charged any additional tuition fees by Bangor University and you will not be asked to pay tuition fees abroad either. Students who successfully complete an International Experience Year have ‘with International Experience’ added to their degree title.
31 STUDY OR WORK ABROAD
Alumni profile “In the years since qualifying as a teacher, I have experienced many changes in education. The advent of e-learning has brought about huge pedagogical shifts. Bangor prepared me to handle these changes as the course highlights the importance of adaptability in education. I love my career, it is a privilege to work alongside so many wonderful educators and children.”
Substitute Programme
If you do not want to add a year to your degree, you may be able to go abroad on our ‘Substitute’ programme. The exchange will happen during your second year, and you can choose to spend the entire second year abroad or just one semester. This is a study only option, and the credits you gain abroad will be transferred back to your degree programme at Bangor.
ALOMA WILLIAMS Deputy Principal at James Hargest College, Invercargill, New Zealand
Summer Programmes
If you would like to spend only a short time abroad, you can apply to take part in one of our international Summer Programmes.
