Research News Chinese Mitten Crab... A teaching fellow based in the School of Ocean Sciences in Bangor University who’s main field of research concerns marine biological invasions currently has work in progress regarding the invasion of the Chinese mitten crab in UK waters. This crab species is cause for major concern worldwide due to its burrowing behaviour, which compromises the stability of riverbanks and levies, as well as flood retention mechanisms, thus affecting biosecurity. This species of crab is however an extremely popular delicacy in the Far East, where they are sold in vending machines for instant live consumption!

Snowdonia walking ‘app’ launched... A Bangor graduate has recently developed his first mobile ‘app’ Walking in Snowdonia. Andy Harbach, 34, from Bangor, graduated in 2000 with a Computer Systems Engineering masters degree, and has been running his own IT business, Snowdonia IT Services, for 7 years. Andy’s business develops web based applications and e-commerce systems. This is a direct result of his university education, as he needed a computer science degree to begin his career as a programmer at Bangor based, Secure Trading – one of the first independent internet payment service providers in the UK. Andy, a keen mountaineer, said: “I’ve had my own website about walking in Snowdonia for over 15 years. With changes in technology, and the popularity of iPhones it seemed to be a natural extension to write a companion iPhone app that people could carry around with them. The app was my first one after a course on iPhone software development run by Software Alliance Wales (SAW) at Bangor University. “The app is aimed at anyone who would like to go walking in the mountains of Snowdonia, but do not know the routes particularly well. Of course people should not rely on the app for navigation purposes, and they must have appropriate map and compass skills before venturing out into the mountains.” To download the ‘Walking in Snowdonia’ app, visit the App Store on your iPhone.
To follow in Andy’s footsteps view the courses available in the School of Computer Science at www.bangor.ac.uk/cs Shanti Shanker, 32, from Andheri (W), Mumbai, India is studying for a PhD in Psychology at Bangor University and hopes to continue her career in research and academia after graduation. Shanti thinks that the best thing about Bangor is the location “You have rivers, mountains and the sea within walking distance. the people here are really friendly and the University makes you feel at home!” To view Shanti’s full profile please visit - www.bangor.ac.uk/studentlife/studentprofiles/shanti
Launch of the School of Philosophy & Religious Studies... The new school of Philosophy and Religion was launched on October 12th in Bangor University’s council chamber, various Members of the council attended and the Vice-Chancellor welcomed all who had been able to Vice-Chancellor Prof. John G Hughes and Dr. Eryl Davies come to the event. Dr Eryl W Davies, Head of the new School, said that although this was a new initiative the School was being built on sturdy foundations, since religion (under various guises) had been taught at Bangor for well over a century, and philosophy had been taught here until the early 1980’s, so there was a long and distinguished tradition of teaching both subjects at the University. Research News Link Between Dry Eye Disease & dehydration established...
Bangor Law School has happily welcomed Damian Etone of Cameroon as its first ever Chevening student. The School of Electronic Engineering welcomes students from Kuwait... The School of Electronic Engineering welcomed new students from Kuwait and gratefully received some beautiful hand carved model replicas of one of Kuwait’s traditional boats. The School of Electronic Engineering has been teaching students from Kuwait for two years now and the collaboration has been working well. Bangor University now has 10 students from Kuwait in years 1 and 2. Dr Mohammed Mabrook of Bangor University said, “Students from Kuwait are extremely hard working and a delight to teach. At the end of last year we presented Saad Alkhatas with an award for best student in an engineering subject
in the second year, a very well deserved award and Fareed Mohammad has been put forward for an IET award for best mature student.” Yousuf Alkgot from Michref in Kuwait has said, “The city of Bangor is a nice compact size and it feels very safe living here. I have found the standard of teaching to be very high here at Bangor and I am enjoying my course very much.”
Health scientists at Bangor University have for the first time established a link between dry eye disease and dehydration. Dry eye disease (DED) is a condition which can cause extreme discomfort and lead to eye damage. This new link suggests that ensuring DED sufferers are fully hydrated could alleviate DED symptoms. Prof. Neil Walsh of the School of Sport, Health & Exercise Sciences explained: “We’ve been researching hydration in a number of groups of individuals, from athletes to the military. Having proven that a test for dry eye disease was effective in assessing hydration in normal healthy participants, it was a small step to turn the research on its head and wonder whether hydration was involved in dry eye disease. We were surprised to realise that no published research had investigated any connection between dry eye disease and hydration. From our work so far, we believe that hydration is involved in dry eye disease and believe that increasing fluid intake might reduce symptoms in patients with dry eye disease.” The group worked with Prof. Christine Purslow from Plymouth University and Dr Marieh Esmaeelpour from the Medical University of Vienna.
