Over 130 years of excellence……
A top 50 UK University as listed in the Times and the Sunday Times Good University Guide, 2015. Why study at Bangor?
World leading research
There are numerous ranking systems used in the UK to assess the quality of Universities and it can often be confusing for students when deciding on a University. However, in Bangor’s case it could not be simpler; we are ranked in the top 2% of the World’s universities. This reflects not just the high quality of teaching and research but also student satisfaction ratings, standard of facilities on offer and the considerable investment which we make in supporting each and every student.
Every 5-6 years the UK Government organises an analysis of all research conducted at British universities. This analysis is called the Research Assessment Exercise (RAE). During the most recent RAE, Bangor University proved to be among the very top universities in the UK. The RAE identified world leading research in all of Bangor’s 19 assessed subject areas with nearly 50% given the top grading.
Bangor University is also ranked in the Top 10 for Student Satisfaction (National Student Survey, 2014) which brings us amongst other highly reputed universities like Oxford and Cambridge for this year.
Areas of particular excellence include Accounting and Finance which is ranked No.1 in the UK, and Electronic Engineering which is ranked No.2 in the UK. International Experience Opportunities
As a Bangor student, you’ll have the opportunity to take your studies and experiences further afield by studying or working abroad. Tier 1 (Graduate Entrepreneur) visa scheme The Tier 1 (Graduate Entrepreneur) visa scheme is for those international graduates identified by the University as having developed a genuine and credible business idea that the University would then like to support with further development.
You can learn about all of our opportunities online (www.bangor.ac.uk/studentexchange), but you may be particularly interested in our International Experience Degree, which you will find in more detail below.
International Experience Year The ‘International Experience Year’ is an extra year which you spend studying or working abroad and you can apply to take it between your first and second, second and third or even after your final year. This means you have more time to decide if you want to go abroad and because you still study in Bangor for three years as an undergraduate (or one year if you’re applying for postgraduate), the year abroad doesn’t interfere with your degree in Bangor. This point is really important for two reasons: it means there is more flexibility on where you can go and you have more freedom on what to do: study or work.
We’d always encourage you to explore your home subject area whilst abroad, to benefit from what might be available there that’s not available here, but – in theory – you might be a biology student here in Bangor and when you get to Australia you could take History or Psychology, for example. You could also think about working abroad for a year. Finding a work placement would be your responsibility and we would offer you advice on how to do so. The idea of the ‘International Experience Year’ is to give you the opportunity to have a meaningful international experience – it’s the living and experiencing of a different life abroad that we want you to focus on. We think the International Experience Year is a great opportunity and to support you we won’t charge you any tuition fees whatsoever for that year abroad. We will also add ‘with International Experience’ to your degree title so that future employers will clearly see that you are a globally-aware and globally-experienced student.
Selection process: The university will select the top-20 applicants who are able to demonstrate a robust business case together with real commitment to make a success of this exciting opportunity. Duration of visa: If successful, students will be eligible to apply for a one year Tier-1 Graduate Entrepreneur visa with the possibility of a further year extension or transfer to another visa category.
How to apply Students may complete an application form at any time during the year and there will be three panel meetings each year to assess the applications. Further information: Contact the International Student Support Office at: E: internationalsupport@bangor.ac.uk
06-07

Low cost of living Market research shows that the cost of living in Bangor is much lower than in other parts of the UK. Bangor has been described as “one of the cheapest places in Britain” to be a student. (The A-Z of Universities and Higher Education Colleges). Bangor is consistently ranked as one of the “best value” places to study in the UK in various cost-of-living surveys so you can be sure that you are getting the most from your money in Bangor. As a guide we would recommend that students allow up to £6,000 for undergraduate study and £8,000 for postgraduate study to cover accommodation, food and other personal expenses per year. The figure is a guide and will vary depending on the individual needs and lifestyle of each student.
Working Part-time The University’s JobZone offers a free service to help you find part-time employment. Work opportunities vary. Usual jobs for students include helping out in shops and at events and basic office assistance. International students can work up to 20 hours per week and full-time during the holidays. The University does not recommend you work the full 20 hours during term time because studying in the UK is intensive and you will need to make sure you have enough time to complete all your course work and reading to ensure success in your studies. The UK currently (from 1 October 2014) has a minimum wage of £6.50 per hour if you are aged 21 years and over and £5.13 per hour if you are aged 18-20.

I chose to study here because my degree is unique to Bangor University and therefore could only be taught to me here in Bangor. There is nowhere else in the UK that teaches Islamic Banking and Finance. However I was also aware that the department ranks very highly in the league tables – the business school here is viewed as one of the best within the UK and as a result has an excellent reputation. Both of these factors encouraged me to go for this course. Bistoun Rasoul Iraq Islamic Banking and Finance (Postgraduate)

PhD/Research Courses A research degree is required to develop an academic and research-orientated career worldwide. Bangor has a strong research base across a spectrum of academic disciplines engaging in research at national and international levels. The University provides strong support for research activities including encouraging links with commercial and industrial bodies in the UK and overseas.
Eligibility 1. Academic – Entry onto our PhD/MPhil courses normally requires a postgraduate/ Masters degree of equivalent standard to the British postgraduate/Masters degree. 2. English Language – To be eligible for our PhD/MPhil programmes, international students must satisfy English Language Requirements.
Course options A. PhD Programmes To obtain a PhD you are expected to conduct independent research that will make an original contribution to knowledge about that particular subject and present this in the form of a thesis. At Bangor University you have two routes available;
Route 1: The PhD Programme of Study (3 years and 1 year writing-up) If you satisfy the English language requirements for the PhD program and have already drafted your research proposal, then the programme will normally be of 3 years in duration. Candidates will undertake the research during the three years and submit the final dissertation at the end of the fourth year – which is designated for writing-up.
I have a research proposal
Route 2: Four years – Combined English Language and PhD program If you DO NOT satisfy the English Language requirement for PhD programs AND/OR you need guidance for drafting your research proposal, then the 4-year combined English and PhD program will suit you.
B. MPhil Programmes An MPhil will usually take 2 years to complete on a full-time programme and 3-5 years as a part-time programme. Research at MPhil level should represent an extension of existing knowledge, although the demands of originality are less than that for a PhD.
C. MRes programmes The Research Master’s degree is more research-orientated than a normal taught Masters programme, usually consisting of 120 credits research and 60 credits taught (66%/34%). It is seen to be a good route into PhD level study. Eligibility criteria and application procedures are the same as for the general taught Master’s degree programmes.
PhD/MPhil Subject areas Being a research focused university of international reputation, our academic departments offer research opportunities in more than 25 academic disciplines. To find a suitable research topic or course, please refer to our page: www.bangor.ac.uk/ international/applying/research
Applying for Phd/MPhil programmes 1. Select an appropriate research topic. Refer to: www.bangor.ac.uk/international/applying/ research, for more details
2. Scan the following supporting documents: Bachelor degree certificate and transcript Master’s degree certificate and transcript English language test certificate (if undertaken) Academic reference/support letter Confirmation of funding/sponsorship (if applicable) Passport 3. Submit the online application with the supporting documents listed above using the following link: www.bangor.ac.uk/ onlineapplicationform
The PhD Programme of Study
Once you have found a member of staff whose research interests broadly match your own, you should contact them directly with a concise research ‘brief’ that outlines your proposal and ask whether he/she would consider supervising your project. If the academic expresses his/her interest, you may then further discuss your ideas and develop a full PhD/MPhil research proposal. At this stage, you should formally apply for the PhD/MPhil programme using the form available at www.bangor.ac.uk/courses/ postgrad/apply You should fill the form out thoroughly, including academic references, your research proposal and the name of the academic member of staff under whose supervision you intend the research to be conducted.

Part 1: Year 1/The Preparatory Year. This will include English language tuition, academic study skills, regular meetings with the PhD supervisor and integration with other research students at the Academic School. During Part 1, you will research and write a full PhD research proposal based on the topic selected on the application form. Part 2: 3 year PhD Programme plus 1-year writing-up. The final dissertation is submitted at the end of the 1-year writing-up period. Progression from Part 1 to Part 2 will be conditional on having: Completed a fully developed research proposal that meets the Academic School’s requirement for entry onto a research degree. Achieved the required English language level required for entry onto a research degree. The duration of Part 1 will depend on the English language test score on entry, the English level required to progress onto the research degree/Part 2 and the completion of a satisfactory research proposal. The minimum score required is 4.0/4.5. As a guideline, students require 1 full year to increase by 2 IELTS bands e.g. from 4.5 to 6.5.
Description of your topic (max 300-700 words)
The purpose of your proposal is to show that you have a relevant theme, a viable project and the competence to carry it out. The information is vital when we evaluate your proposed study and decide if we have the right staff expertise to supervise you. The format and length of the proposal is likely to vary according to the type of project. Typically a proposal is no less than 1500 words (3-4 pages) long and will cover the following points.
Provisional title (max 50 words) The title should indicate the central focus of the research and should contain the key words associated with proposed work.
Central question/hypothesis for investigation (max 15-50 words) State the central question/hypothesis of your proposed research. Eg. ‘This thesis asks…’ or ‘This thesis examines the hypothesis that….’.
Explain how your research will address the gap or shortcomings in knowledge, why it is original and why further research in the area is important.
Methodology (max 300 words) Explain how you will obtain the information necessary to write your thesis. Include an explanation of the approach(es) will you be taking to the research (library-based? empirical?) and any relevant quantitative/ qualitative methods (interviews, questionnaires, survey and to whom etc). Outline any ethical concerns (eg interviewing children/prisoners/refugees etc).
Resources and ethical clearance Will your research comply with the agreed international standards for good practise in social research? Using published ethical guidelines show that you are aware of the specific documents and clearances you will need.
Project management
Key aims of the research (max 200 words)
You should map out a schedule for your project, from the start date onwards, showing when you expect to conduct periods of fieldwork (if applicable) and the time required for data analysis and writing up your results.
Set out a number of specific aims (3-5) of the research which indicate the intended contribution and impact of the PhD. They should answer the question: ‘what will the PhD achieve’?
References
Literature review (max 700-1,000 words) This section should situate your chosen topic in the existing research and should show that you are familiar with the key works in the area. Explain how the current literature addresses the issue you have identified, give a summary of recent debates in the area and explain the current shortcomings in the existing scholarship.
You should include a list of the references cited in your proposal, using Harvard notation. This will be useful for potential supervisors to evaluate your knowledge of the research topic.

Professors at Bangor are so helpful and open to any questions I have. There is not a time that I haven’t had a question or needed help on an assignment that my professors haven’t given their undivided attention until I felt confident in finishing the assignment. All of my professors have been in the career field as well, from published poets, to journalists and screenwriters, I get to learn from people who not only are skilled in their subject, but are professionals in it as well.
