Unique Confucius Institute for Law School

Budding Bankers Choose London Centre... We are delighted to announce that in only it’s second year of opening that Bangor Business School London Centre has reached its full capacity for this academic year.

The first Confucius Institute anywhere in the world to have a focus on Law, was opened officially at Bangor University on the 10th September. Confucius Institutes spread understanding about Chinese language and culture. The Confucius Institute was launched by the First Minister Carwyn Jones, in the presence of Mr SHEN Yang, Minister-Councellor of the Chinese Embassy.

A delegation from Bangor University’s partner institution, the China University of Political Science & Law led by its President, Professor HUANG Jin visited Bangor especially for the opening ceremony. The event included performances of Chinese folk song

and dance by Yuannan University of Nationalities, Calligraphy performance by Professor SUN He of the China University of Political Science & Law, a well-known calligrapher in China, and a special performance by the renowned Male Voice Choir, Hogia’r Ddwylan.

Professor John Thornton, Head of Bangor Business School commented: “The early success of the London Centre reflects the strong academic reputation of the Business School in the areas of accounting, banking and finance and outstanding efforts by the team at Bangor. The challenge now is to build on our success and make Bangor Business School the place to study accounting, banking and finance in London." Based at the impressive Broadgate Tower, close to Liverpool Street station, Bangor Business School’s London Centre delivers a portfolio of cutting-edge financial qualifications at MBA and MSc level to busy executives and full-time students who wish to study and live in London. Research News... Food Dudes win international acclaim Dr Pauline Horne and Professor Fergus Lowe of Bangor University have been presented with an award for their pioneering work on childhood obesity in front of 4,000 academics from many different countries, at a conference held in Seattle recently. “This is a project, initiated at Bangor University, that can make a real impact on the health of people in those societies worldwide that are now faced with such a major obesity challenge. I’m very pleased that the academics involved have received the recognition of their professional peers for their contribution” said Vice-Chancellor Professor John G. Hughes. The Food Dudes programme influences children to eat more fruit and vegetables and less junk food. It has been introduced nationally in Ireland, the UK and there are also successful projects running in Milan, Italy and in both Utah and California in the USA.

Students nominate Law School lecturer to carry Olympic Torch An ‘inspirational’ lecturer from Bangor Law School was selected to carry the Olympic Flame after being nominated for the honour by her students. Law lecturer Sarah Nason was nominated in the ‘Inspiring Others through Education’ category.

Bangor University hosts prestigious Fulbright Summer School... Bangor University has said a fond farewell to eight Fulbright Scholars, who are among the USA’s brightest students, who visited the University as part of their study of Wales’ culture, history, politics and landscape. Bangor Business School tops rankings

“Banking research at Bangor is placed highest in the UK”

Bangor Business School has been rated as the top institution in the UK and amongst the world’s top 30 for Banking reaserch, according to recent rankings. Bangor is placed 27th in the table, the highest placed UK institution, ahead of Oxford University and the London School of Economics. It is also currently ranked as the No.1 Business School in the UK for research in the field of Accounting and Finance, according to the latest Research Assessment Exercise (RAE) by the UK government.

From the mountains of Colorado to the coast of Wales... As part of a new Study Abroad partnership with the University of Denver, Colorado Bangor welcomes our first group of students this semester. The students will study at Bangor for one semester in a range of schools including Psychology, Social Sciences, Education and English before returning to their home institution at Christmas. The Vice-Provost for Internationalisation of the University of Denver, Luc Beaudoin visited Bangor just prior to the arrival of the students to view our facilities and discuss the new partnership. Bangor has been selected as only one of a few Foundation partners around the world and will see a growing number of students from the University over the next couple of years.

Bangor’s International Student Ambassadors scheme has been successful running for a number of years. The scheme was set up to support international students during the application process right up to graduation day.

Insight into snake venom evolution could aid drug discovery....

This year 22 students have been chosen to represent the University as ambassadors and will play a key part in recruitment activities both within Bangor and on overseas visits as well as contributing to the support programme offered to students during their studies at Bangor University. Bangor victorious on University Challenge Bangor University took on the University of St Andrews in Scotland in the ultimate TV quiz show on Monday 24th September and won! Bangor University are now through to the next round of University Challenge. Representing Bangor are Nina Grant, Simon Tomlinson, Mark Stevens and Adam Pearce.

Researches have discovered that the toxins that make snake and lizard venom deadly can evolve back into completely harmless molecules, raising the possibility that they could be developed into drugs.

Students appear on TV quiz show

Dr Wolfgang Wuster, Bangor University among other UK-led scientists have made a discovery about snake venom that could lead to the development of new drugs to treat a range of lifethreatening conditions like cancer, diabetes and high blood pressure.

Dr Wolfgang Wuster, Bangor University, co-author of the study says: “Many snake venom toxins target the same physiological pathways that doctors would like to target to treat a variety of medical conditions. Understanding how toxins can be tamed into harmless physiological proteins may aid development of cures from venom”.
