A student on a part-time degree will do the same amount of studying as a full time student, but spread over a longer period of time. There are three levels of study, each worth 120 credits and equivalent to first, second or third year study at degree level. At each stage students may exit with Higher Education qualifications. Futher details on page 53.

We have a range of postgraduate courses, aimed both at working people looking for career development and those wishing to study a subject at a more advanced level. Applicants must have either an initial degree, a recognised equivalent qualification or be over 25 years of age with at least two years relevant experience. For advice and guidance, or details on how to apply for any of the programmes, contact us today!

Part-time degrees have a modular structure, which means that you can work at your own pace. Undergraduate Degrees BA Combined Studies This degree allows students a great deal of flexibility in choosing what they wish to study. There are various established pathways through the degree, and students are given detailed advice on how to plan their scheme of study so that their combination of subjects is academically coherent and well structured, but within those parameters there is a good deal of choice over which modules to take. There are also opportunities to develop particular interests of your own in more detail through researching and writing dissertations at levels 5 and 6. This degree often appeals to potential students who already have some Higher Education qualifications such as a foundation degree or credits earned as part of an uncompleted degree at either Bangor or another University, and who wish to top them up to a full degree.

BA Humanities This Humanities degree programme provides students with the opportunity to study three main subjects areas – English Literature, History and Philosophy. It will do this through a combination of themed, interdisciplinary and subject specific modules. The study of the humanities provides excellent training for the development of transferable skills such as critical thinking and

communication which are valuable both for personal development and employability. Students will also have an unique opportunity in Year 2 to opt into a full time History or English course at the University if desired.

BA Fine Art The BA (Hons) Fine Art degree engages with a very broad range of creative interests on the basis that professional practitioners today benefit from expertise in a range of media. The early stages of the course are designed to build skills and knowledge ready to develop an increasingly independent approach to creative thinking and making. The degree is practice based and normally takes six years of part time study to complete with exit awards at each level. For admission, you may be called on to attend a brief informal interview bringing with you a portfolio of recent work. Normally students admitted to the course have completed our Preparation course or equivalent.

POSTGRADUATE PROGRAMMES 2014

MA (PG Cert/Dip) Community Development

MA Women’s Studies

MA Fine Art NEW

This highly successful programme is designed for those working/planning to work in the community, public and voluntary sectors to develop and enhance their understanding of the theories, processes and practice of community development.

Women’s Studies is in many ways a unique subject which challenges traditional structures of knowledge about gender and about the usual ways in which we learn. It has a reputation for being both intellectually stimulating and practically relevant, as well as being accessible to women from varying backgrounds and interests.

The MA Fine Art degree builds on the successful existing undergraduate programme enabling you to progress to an advanced level through modular part-time study.

The programme has critical reflection and practice based research at its core. It reflects the National Occupational Standards and is delivered by academic and practitioner tutors, including a series of seminars by key figures in the field of community development. Study visits to Ireland, Mallorca and Portugal, as well as all parts of Wales, form a vital element of the learning and network building process.

It draws on many disciplines including sociology, literature, history, psychology and politics. It recognises the value of women’s lived experiences and encourages reflection on these in relation to theoretical insights that cross discipline boundaries. It enables women to make sense of their lives/life and to seek solutions to the barriers they face.

The programme is designed to enable you to engage in a substantial period of study to help you review, change, develop and strengthen your position as an artist with reflective practice based research as the central strategy of learning. Your research will be supported by supervisory guidance, tutorials, mentoring, seminars, visiting lectures, case studies and peer group learning, all combining to create a critical environment in preparing you for further professional practice in the creative industries.

Module code: Tutor: Duration: Starts:

YSE-1109 Endaf Evans Once a week for 6 weeks Weds 02/10/13 09.30-16.30 Location: Colwyn Bay, CAIS Dawn Centre Level / Credits: Level 4/20 credits

Module code: Tutor: Duration: Starts:

The module will enable individuals to increase their knowledge and awareness of contemporary and emerging substances and to gain an understanding of national legislation in this area. The module will discuss terms such as ‘smart’, ‘designer’ ‘cognitive enhancers’ and ‘multiple substance use’ in terms of legal/illegal issues and the biopsychosocial impact on the individual. Attention will be paid to the National Occupational Standards relating to Drugs and Alcohol (DANOS) and the various agencies involved with treatment services will be identified and discussed.

According to the Trades Union Congress (May 2010), “the use of drugs and alcohol can be a serious workplace issue. Not only can their use lead to significant health problems but anyone under the influence of drugs or alcohol can be a hazard to themselves and others. Many drugs can also have psychological effects that can affect performance or mental wellbeing, especially after long-term use or if a dependency develops. There are also legal issues to consider.”

This course is designed for those who are new to digital photography or who wish to improve their skills. You will learn the elements of digital photography technique, all the way from how to take digital photographs to printing and publishing via Adobe Photoshop and online. During this module, you will also gain the essential basic skill set for the creative digital manipulation of your images with Photoshop. The aim is to equip you with the skills and confidence to produce a small portfolio of your own work that you feel reflects how you have progressed as a photographer during the course.

This module will provide an introduction to digital imaging and manipulation using the industry-standard software Adobe Photoshop. You will study the major Photoshop tools and work with layers and selections, making design compositions suitable for both screen and print output. Pa Lefel?

Which level?

Cynigir y cyrsiau hyn ar y cyd rhwng Dysgu Gydol Oes a’r Ysgol Ieithoedd Modern yn y Brifysgol. Mae’r modiwlau 12-wythnos yma wedi’u seilio ar ddull cyfathrebol ac maent yn helpu myfyrwyr i ddatblygu ymhellach yr holl sgiliau iaith allweddol: darllen, ysgrifennu, siarad a gwrando. Â’r pwyslais ar siarad, gwrando a deall, bydd y modiwlau o ddiddordeb penodol i’r rhai sy’n dymuno ymweld â’r gwahanol wledydd.

Dechreuwyr: Rydych yn ddechreuwr llwyr, yn gwybod y nesaf peth i ddim am yr iaith. Byddwch yn datblygu sgiliau mewn amrywiaeth o dasgau iaith syml bob dydd. Bydd y cwrs yn rhoi gwybodaeth sylfaenol iawn am ffurfiau a geirfa'r iaith. Dechreuwyr Estynedig: Efallai eich bod wedi astudio'r iaith yn yr ysgol flynyddoedd yn ôl neu eich bod wedi mynychu cwrs i ddechreuwyr. Mae gennych eirfa gyfyngedig iawn a pheth dealltwriaeth o ffurfiau'r iaith. Bydd y cwrs yn cyflwyno amser berf newydd i chi a'ch helpu i gyfathrebu mewn sefyllfaoedd cymdeithasol neu waith bob dydd. Canolraddol Estynedig: Mae gennych sylfaen resymol yn yr iaith ar lefel ysgol, efallai lefel O/TGAU neu gyffelyb. Gellwch ddelio'n hyderus â'r rhan fwyaf o sefyllfaoedd arferol o ddydd i ddydd. Rydych nawr eisiau symud ymlaen y tu hwnt i gyfarchion syml yn ystod eich gwyliau dramor, gan ddysgu sut i ymdopi â sefyllfaoedd mwy annisgwyl a chyfrannu at sgyrsiau ar faterion o ddiddordeb cyffredinol. Uwch Estynedig: Mae gennych eirfa dda ynghyd â dealltwriaeth dda o reolau gramadeg. Mae’ch sgiliau siarad a gwrando yn caniatáu i chi fod yn gymharol hyderus mewn sefyllfaoedd gwaith neu rai cymdeithasol. Gallwch ddeall ystod eang o destunau hir, heriol, gan gynhyrchu testunau clir, wedi’u strwythuro’n dda. Yn awr hoffech fynegi’ch hun yn rhugl ac yn ddigymell, heb orfod chwilio llawer am ymadroddion, gan ddefnyddio’r iaith yn hyblyg ac yn effeithiol i ddibenion cymdeithasol, academaidd a phroffesiynol.

Beginners: You are a complete beginner, knowing virtually nothing of the language. You will develop competence in a range of predictable simple everyday language tasks. The course will provide a very basic knowledge of the structure and vocabulary of the language. Beginners Plus: You may have studied the language at school some years ago or attended a beginners’ course. You have a very limited vocabulary and some understanding of basic structures. The course will introduce new tenses and help you to communicate in everyday social or work situations. Intermediate Plus: You have a reasonable foundation in the language at school level, possibly to ‘O’/GCSE level or equivalent. You can deal with most common ‘survival’ situations confidently. You now want to start moving beyond merely practising simple exchanges during your holiday abroad, learning to cope in non-routine situations. Advanced Plus: You have acquired a good vocabulary and a good understanding of grammatical rules. Your speaking and listening skills allow you to be relatively confident in most social or working settings. You can understand a wide range of demanding and long texts and produce clear and well structured texts. You now want to express yourself fluently and spontaneously without much obvious searching for expressions, and use the language flexibly and effectively for social, academic and professional purposes.

Er mwyn ysgafnhau’r gwaith gweinyddol a dechrau’r dysgu ynghynt, gofynnwn yn garedig i chi gofrestru ymlaen llaw ar gyfer yr holl fodiwlau hyn.

Languages These courses are offered jointly between Lifelong Learning and the School of Modern Languages in the University. These 12-week modules are based on a communicative approach and will help you to further develop all the key language skills: reading, writing, speaking and listening. With the emphasis on speaking, listening and understanding, the modules will be of particular interest to those who wish to visit these countries. To ease the administrative work and in order to start teaching promptly, we would kindly ask you to pre-register for all of these modules.
