Bangor Business School No.1 in the UK for Accounting, Banking and Finance research* Top 15 in the world for Banking research† Bangor Business School offers a full range of business and finance courses, from Accounting and Economics to Management and Marketing. All degrees have been developed by specialists who have vast experience in their fields. Some staff have undertaken consultancy work for governments, the European Commission and financial institutions. Others have joined the School from industry, bringing their wealth of industrial knowledge and experience to Bangor. Our aim is to ensure that all students benefit from the wide range of expertise our School offers - that’s why we offer a common syllabus in the first year. The beauty of this arrangement is that students get a taste of a range of subjects and find out which are of most interest to them. If at the end of the first year a student decides he or she would rather specialise in Banking instead of Business Studies, or vice-versa, they can easily change degree at that point.
We place emphasis on vocational and professional development as well as academic enhancement. That’s why some courses offer a work experience module which involves 10 days in a business organisation on full-time work experience. Students on selected programmes may take part in the annual visits to London and Brussels visiting the various parliaments and see at first hand the courts, committees and other institutions, while students taking the ‘Chinese Business and Language’ module may have the opportunity to participate in a 10-day field trip to some of China’s major cities. Some courses also offer students the opportunity to complete part of their degree at a partner institution in Europe through the Erasmus scheme. Bangor Business School enjoys close links with business and industry. Through these close links we offer an interesting and varied programme of guest lectures which have included the Chief Operating Officer of No.10 Downing Street, the Chief Executive of the Scottish Premier League, and HSBC’s Head of IT Security.
Naturally, we also offer Masters degrees and supervision for research degrees. Indeed, Bangor business school has one of the most impressive PhD schools of any business school in Europe, drawing on the expertise of our staff across a range of disciplines. Teaching and research within Bangor Business School are enhanced by our excellent computing facilities. We have our own dedicated computer teaching laboratories with links to commercial databases and the internet, and all students have access to other computer laboratories throughout the University. Bangor Business School’s specialist facilities include online databases such as Thomson ONE, Datastream, Bankscope, Bloomberg and Amadeus. You will use these resources for project work. This dedicated facility contributes to a learning environment that is highly conducive to top-quality education and training.

My course placed a great emphasis on reconciling theory with practical real-world concerns. Recent developments within the present economic environment require new graduates to possess a good grasp of business ethics, and the direction of the courses at Bangor ensures that all its graduates are trained to meet this demand. Joint Honours Degree Courses In addition to the Single Honours degree courses listed on pages 7–11, it is possible to register to study two subjects from different Schools in equal proportions, to gain a Joint Honours degree. The degree title would reflect your combination of subjects, such as Business Studies and French or Economics and History. If you register for a Joint Honours degree course, you will normally take 6 modules (60 credits) in each of the two subjects in each academic year. There are a few minor exceptions: on some Joint Honours courses you will take 8 modules in one subject and 4 modules in the other subject in Year 1. For the Joint Honours degrees that combine either Business Studies or Marketing with a modern language (French, German, Italian or Spanish): in addition to a half-andhalf combination (i.e. 6 modules in each subject), alternative combinations are also possible whereby one-third of modules (i.e. 4 modules) are taken in one subject and two-thirds (i.e. 8 modules) in the other subject. Degrees that involve one-half or two-thirds of language study are 4 year programmes, with Year 3 spent abroad developing proficiency in the language studied. Degrees that involve one-third of language study are 3 year programmes based entirely in Bangor. Pages 22–26 show the Bangor Business School component of the Joint Honours courses that combine a Business School subject with a subject from another school. Please note that the course structures, lists of modules and other details shown on pages 22–26 are subject to revision from time to time. Some of these details have been updated since the publication of the Bangor University 2014 Undergraduate Prospectus.

A Joint Honours degree allowed me to study the best of both subjects. As part of my degree I studied abroad at universities in the Caribbean and France. It was an amazing experience and allowed me to put my French language skills into practice whilst not forgetting my business studies – I chose subjects such as Caribbean Economics, Accounting, Strategic Management and Tourism.

Can I change my degree course after my studies have begun? Yes. All Bangor Business School Single Honours degree courses have a common compulsory component in Year 1. This means you have complete flexibility to switch between any of these degree courses at any time up to and including the start of Year 2. If you register for any Joint Honours degree course including a Bangor Business School subject, you have the flexibility to switch to the Single Honours degree course in the same subject at any time up to and including the start of Year 2. In most cases, you also have the flexibility to switch onto the Single Honours degree course in the other Joint Honours subject.
How many hours per week will I spend in lectures and classes? Your typical weekly class contact time will add up to around 12 hours. Of course, you will be required to spend some of your remaining time in private study, doing assignments and preparing for exams. At university, it is your responsibility to organise your time when you are not in class. It is important to strike a sensible balance between the time you allocate to your academic and your non-academic activities. Good time management is one of the most important keys to having both a successful academic record and an enjoyable social life as a university student.
Do I need A-level Mathematics? No. A GCSE grade C (or equivalent) is the only essential entry requirement in Mathematics. At Bangor, we will show you how you can apply mathematics to business, economics or finance problems, but we will not teach you mathematics for its own sake. The Quantitative Methods modules in Years 1 and 2 are designed to help you develop your numeracy skills and confidence in mathematics and quantitative methods.
Assessment Most modules are assessed by a mixture of coursework (or other continuous assessment) and examination. Coursework will normally account for 25–40% and examinations for 60–75% of the final mark; however, there may be a few exceptions. The pass mark in all assessments is 40%. At the end of Year 3, your final degree classification depends on your overall mark: a weighted average of your Year 2 average mark (one-third weighting) and your Year 3 average mark (two-thirds weighting).
How is my final degree classification determined? Your final degree classification is determined by your overall mark, as follows: Overall Mark %
Final Degree Classification

First Class honours or 1st
60 - 69
Upper Second Class honours or 2:1
50 - 59
Lower Second Class honours or 2:2

Employability In today’s highly competitive employment market, it is important to take advantage of the academic, recreational and work-related activities available to you as a student. Bangor Business School encourages the development of skills outside the classroom in order to fully prepare students for life after graduation. Careers and Employability Service
Bangor Business Society
Whether or not you know what career path you want to follow, the Careers and Employability Service supports students and recent graduates to make appropriate choices about their futures, by providing high-quality information, workshops, individual advice and guidance as well as offering work-based opportunities such as a student employment bureau, work placements and work shadowing.
The Bangor Business Society aims to foster a sense of community within the School by offering students a variety of academic and social activities throughout the year.

The Business School is unique within the University in that it has a diverse group of students from different countries around the world entering all three years of study. This in turn offers students a chance to broaden their learning experience by interacting with people they may not have had the chance to meet before. Working closely with the staff, the Society aims to facilitate learning experiences for students from all years that can be put on their CVs and to build on what they learn in the classrooms. For budding Marketers, there’s the opportunity to undertake hands-on projects with local companies which are then put into practice. For future investors, there’s the Stock Market Challenge which offers the chance to play the markets in a safe way. The Society also arranges visits to graduate fairs which are an invaluable opportunity to meet with prospective employers of the future.

IBM Universities Challenge In recent years Bangor Business School students have had great success in the IBM Universities Business Challenge, a prestigious and highly competitive event in which undergraduates from universities throughout the UK participate in a series of realistic, simulated business scenarios. As well as enabling students to develop their employability, team-work and leadership skills, the Challenge is a valuable opportunity for students to network with and to be head-hunted by recruiters.
CIM Student Chapter Students of Bangor Business School run a CIM (Chartered Institute of Marketing) student chapter association which organises a range of marketing events and activities, enabling students to put into practice what is learnt in lectures.
Did You Know? 87.7% of graduates from Bangor Business School were in employment or further study/training within six months of graduating, according to the most recent ‘Destination of Leavers in Higher Education Survey’.
Employability
Undergraduate Internship Scheme Bangor University’s Undergraduate Internship Scheme provides opportunities to help enhance the employability of its students. All undergraduate students are eligible to apply for these internships, which are paid placements in various departments within the university. Past placements have included: Research Support Role, School of
Linguistics and English Language Marketing, Bangor Business School Event Co-ordinating, Bangor Law
School Social Media Development,
School of Medical Sciences Campaign Promotion and Web
Development, Welsh Institute for National Resources
Workshop Development, Technocamps
(School of Computer Science)
Consultation Project, Estates Public Consultation, Maes Glas
Alexander Aldred, who is studying BA Business Economics, obtained a placement as a Project Support Officer within Bangor Law School…
This was the best internship anyone could possibly have: I was given meaningful and challenging tasks, and I was paid a decent wage. I had responsibility for managing all the nominations for the School’s inaugural Welsh Procurement Awards, acquiring sponsors for the event, and writing the speeches. I was also thrilled to be given the opportunity to write the speech for a video presentation by Jane Hutt (Finance Minister and Leader of the House, Welsh Assembly).
I feel I have benefitted greatly from this opportunity and it really shows that Bangor University has a firm commitment to enabling its students to enter the workforce skilled, ready and competent, placing a high value on employability. This internship has been the highlight of my university experience so far.
Bangor Business School provided me with a solid academic grounding in economics and business. What I learned at Bangor I still use today in my position as Chief UK Economist at Deutsche Bank in London. The standard of teaching was excellent. Business Students Help Market and Promote Sell-Out Event Bangor Business School students have been involved in a project to promote the first TEDx event in Wales. TEDx is an independently organised event created in the spirit of TED, a global set of conferences devoted to “ideas worth spreading”. The task of marketing the event fell to a team of Bangor students, who worked closely with the event organisers to help achieve their aims. Testament to the students’ work, the event was a sell-out and very well received. The students participated in a number of marketing activities, including the design of promotional literature, social media campaigns, and writing and distributing a press release.

Student Accommodation
University Managed Accommodation & Halls of Residence Moving away from home can be a big step so you don’t want to be worrying about finding a place to live. That’s why first-year students who choose to study at Bangor University are guaranteed a place in one of the 2,000 rooms available in our halls of residence. Living in student accommodation is a great opportunity to meet new people from different backgrounds and make friends for life. There’s always a warden on call 24 hours a day. You’ll get your own private space because all our rooms are single study bedrooms, and you’ll be asked to indicate whether you prefer a standard or en-suite room. You can also hook up to the internet using your own PC, as internet access is available in all single study bedrooms. The University’s location is superb and although we can’t guarantee you a room with a view, many of our students wake up every morning to see the Snowdonia mountains or the sea. If you wake up late you don’t have to worry about missing your lecture, because all halls are within walking distance of the main University departments and city centre. All accommodation is self-catered, and kitchens are shared with fellow students. Equipment provided in the kitchens varies from residence to residence, but all will
have basic facilities, such as cookers, fridges and freezers. Students need to bring their own cutlery, pots, pans and crockery.
Standard Accommodation (Shared Facilities) Standard self-catered accommodation has private bedrooms and shared bathroom and kitchen facilities. There are always baths and showers available. The bedrooms in the standard accommodation are usually larger than the en-suite accommodation.
En-Suite Accommodation Self-catered en-suite rooms feature bedrooms with a private shower and toilet in a more recently built residence. You will share your kitchen facilities with fellow students from the same corridor.
Fees Bangor has a lower cost of living than many parts of the UK and the University’s accommodation fees reflect this. Fees are calculated for the full academic session. As a guide, the rent for universitymanaged accommodation for the 2013-14 session was between £2,832 (approx.
£71 per week) and £4,439 (approx. £111 per week) for a 40 week period. The rent covers water, electricity and basic contents insurance. For further information about accommodation fees and how to apply for halls: www.bangor.ac.uk/accommodation

Bangor & North Wales
Bangor is very much a University city. The entertainment and nightlife is student-oriented and student-led.
The cost of living is lower than in most UK cities, so you can make the most of your money in what is a very pleasant environment in which to work and study. The opportunity to find part-time work is important to some students, and the student employment bureau within the Careers and Employability Service can help you find suitable work. Also worth bearing in mind is the fact that, compared to many other university cities, Bangor is a safe place to be a student. The crime rate for North Wales is one of the lowest in the UK. While Bangor itself is compact and convenient, the surrounding area offers plenty of wide open spaces. The mountains and coastline of Snowdonia provide an area of outstanding natural beauty, offering you wonderful recreational opportunities whether you’re interested in outdoor activities or just want to enjoy the scenery. Bangor is exceptionally well-situated and well-equipped for students interested in sport – especially those involving the great outdoors. Rock climbing, sailing, diving, mountain biking, canoeing and surfing are just some of the activities available, as well as team sports such as rugby, hockey and football. Indoor sports are also well catered for.
However, don’t think you need to be sporty to come here – many of our students just like the fact that Bangor is in such a scenic location: safer, cleaner and far friendlier than many larger places. There is easy access to both the sea and some spectacular beaches as well as to the mountains, and there is plenty to do in and around Snowdonia. Historical towns such as Beaumaris, Conwy and Caernarfon (which all have their own castles) or picturesque places such as Beddgelert, Llanberis and Betws-y-Coed are well worth a visit. As a popular holiday destination, North Wales has much to offer in terms of tourist attractions and sights such as the Snowdon Mountain Railway and Thomas Telford’s famous Suspension Bridge. For day trips, the Victorian resort town of Llandudno and historical Chester are both easy car or train journeys away, while the fast ferry service from Holyhead to Ireland means a day trip to Dublin is also a popular option.

If you are already interested in outdoor pursuits, you will be spoilt for choice by the full range of opportunities available right on your doorstep, from climbing and hill walking to paragliding and watersports. Even if you’re not that energetic, you can enjoy the North Wales scenery at a more leisurely pace. We are sure you will be thrilled with the excellent sports and physical recreation facilities we have to offer. Maes Glas, our main sports and recreation centre, is situated next to the main student residential site. It has two main sports halls, three well-equipped rooms for cardiovascular exercise and weights training, a gymnasium, a climbing wall with varying ascents, a bouldering wall, and four squash courts.

Outdoors, we have grass pitches for football and rugby, a synthetic pitch for hockey and training, and a modern athletics track and field sports facility (shared with the municipal council). Nearby there is yet another sports hall and two gymnasiums which are used in the evenings and weekends by the Athletic Union clubs for training and group activities.
The Students’ Union
www.bangor.ac.uk/studentlife/sporting
The Students’ Union exists to promote your interests and welfare and to provide a channel of communication between you and the University. Being part of your Union is free, and gives you access to a wide range of services and discounts. The Union runs a welfare advice centre where students’ problems are dealt with in confidence. During the day, there’s a busy welcoming atmosphere to the Students’ Union building. But it’s at night the Students’ Union comes alive, offering top-class entertainment most nights of the week. The Students’ Union also organises one of the biggest nights of the year, the annual Summer Ball, when the entertainment and end-of-academic year celebrations continue well into the next day. www.undeb.bangor.ac.uk

Representation, personal support and advice on a variety of problems is available through the Students’ Union Advice and Representation Centre.
Health care is available via daily surgeries where no appointment is required (you will need to register with a local doctor). We also have a nurse who can see you on a ‘drop in’ basis and who makes visits to students in their accommodation when necessary. There is a confidential Nightline support service run by students for students. Our Chaplains provide support for all members of the University, regardless of their religious beliefs. As well as many Christian churches, there is a mosque located in Bangor High Street, within easy walking distance of the University buildings and accommodation.
After graduating with First Class Honours, I intend to stay at Bangor to pursue a Masters in Consumer Psychology. I couldn’t see myself at any other university after such a fulfilling undergraduate experience at Bangor.
