BANGOR BUSINESS SCHOOL Bangor Business School at Bangor University is a leading teaching and research focused business school offering a full range of disciplines from undergraduate to doctoral level. We have been described as ‘The School that means Business’ and as a ‘Centre of Specialised Excellence’. Students worldwide are attracted to Bangor Business School by our reputation for high quality and expertise, particularly in the area of Banking and Financial Services, in which Bangor is a leading European centre. Staff research papers and articles are published regularly in leading journals and their books published to a worldwide audience. In recent years, staff have conducted high level consultancy work including major policy studies for many leading organisations like the European Commission, the World Bank and the UK Treasury. All of this has contributed to the School has being ranked as one of the top 25 in the world for Banking research (RePEc).

COURSE STRUCTURE

HOW WILL I BE TAUGHT?

All our Single Honours degree courses provide a broad base across all of the disciplines studied in the School Accounting, Banking, Economics, Finance, Management and Marketing - together with a more in-depth study of the programme’s core topics. They also provide a comprehensive introduction to the analytical skills that are required in each of the School’s subject areas.

Teaching is by mix of lectures, seminars and tutorials. Typically, you will have around 12 hours’ contact time per week. You will need to spend your remaining time in private study, doing assignments, preparing for exams or undertaking research.

This common base means that Single Honours students have complete flexibility to switch between any of these programmes at any time up to the end of the first semester and switching is also possible, subject to a limited amount of catch-up work, up to the beginning of the second year. In Years 2 and 3, you will progressively specialise in your course’s core field of study. However, you will retain the opportunity to select optional modules either within your main discipline or in alternative subject areas.

Each semester contains 11 or 12 weeks when lectures and classes take place. These are followed by a short period for revision, and an assessment period, which lasts for 2 weeks at the end of Semester 1, and 3-4 weeks at the end of Semester 2.

HOW WILL I BE ASSESSED? Most modules are assessed by a mixture of coursework (or other continuous assessment) and examination. Coursework will normally account for 25–40% and examinations for 60–75% of the final mark; however, there may be a few exceptions. The pass mark in all modules is 40%.

Many of our subjects can also be studied in combination with a subject from another academic school, such as a modern language or law, to form a Joint Honours degree course. Bangor Business School 5

ECONOMICS Economics is the study of how society uses its resources. It seeks to understand how people interact with each other and with their environment in producing their livelihoods. It is the social science that examines the production, distribution and consumption of goods and services. All of our programmes in economics consider the core theories of microeconomics – the study of how consumers and firms interact – and macroeconomics – the study of the behaviour of entire economies. Your course will apply these theories in understanding a variety of contemporary economic phenomena.

INTERNATIONAL STUDENTS Students from countries worldwide choose to study at Bangor University every year, and make up 10% of the student population. The lower cost of living and relative safety of Bangor makes it a popular choice for both students and their families. The UK is an ideal destination for bachelor degree study, as you can complete your degree in three years, and either continue with your studies or start working sooner.

Multicultural Community

Airport pick-up

We welcome applications from students from all over the world, and are proud to have a multinational student body with representation from Nigeria, Saudi Arabia, Bahrain, Canada, China and a number of other countries. International students bring an added dimension to the classroom, drawing from their knowledge of their home countries and contributing to a comparative study of systems and practices worldwide.

In order to take some stress away from students arriving in a new country for the first time, Bangor University offers an airport pick-up service from Manchester International Airport for students arriving at ‘peak’ times.

Support We are highly aware of the challenges that face international students in moving away from home to study. The University’s dedicated International Student Support Office offers support to students prior to arrival and throughout their time at Bangor. www.bangor.ac.uk/international/support

ENGLISH LANGUAGE International students are generally required to provide evidence of their English language proficiency, and we normally require IELTS 6.0 or equivalent. If you have not yet achieved the level required by Bangor University, you can do so by undertaking Pathway to Study course (IELTS 2.5 - 4) or a Pre-sessional course (IELTS 4 - 6) at our English Language Centre before starting your academic programme. The Pathway to Study and Pre-sessional courses at our English Language Centre for Overseas Students (ELCOS) are intensive academic English and study skills programmes suitable for international students who wish to study undergraduate or postgraduate degree courses at Bangor University. ELCOS aims to facilitate students’ improvement of their academic English language and study skills, including writing in appropriate academic styles, lecture listening, reading, note-taking and speaking & presentation skills. ELCOS Pathway to Study courses are designed to help you improve your English language ability from IELTS 2.5 - 4 (CEFR A2 - B1). Progress to the Pre-sessional course depends on assessment. You cannot join a degree programme directly from this course, but you can when you have successfully completed a Pre-sessional course.

ELCOS Pre-sessional courses are designed to help you to improve your English language ability to at least IELTS 6.0 (CEFR B2). You must reach this level by the end of your course in order to progress onto your chosen degree course. Further English language support is available throughout the year in specially prepared courses for international students, including academic writing classes. STUDY OR WORK ABROAD Studying or working abroad as part of your degree is the opportunity of a lifetime. By spending time in another country, you will experience new cultures, make new friends, gain a global perspective on your subject and learn a new language. Best of all, you will enhance your employability by developing new skills and becoming more motivated, confident and independent. You do not have to be studying a language to undertake one of these exchanges, and Bangor University offers three options, which range from summer programmes to a year abroad.

International Experience Year This is our most popular programme, where students add an extra year onto their degree and spend that additional year studying or working abroad. You will not be charged any additional tuition fees by Bangor University and you will not be asked to pay tuition fees abroad either. Students who successfully complete an International Experience Year have ‘with International Experience’ added to their degree title.

Substitute Programme If you do not want to add a year to your degree, you may be able to go abroad on our ‘Substitute’ programme. The exchange will happen during your second year, and you can choose to spend the entire second

year abroad or just one semester. This is a study only option, and the credits you gain abroad will be transferred back to your degree programme at Bangor.

Summer Programmes If you would like to spend only a short time abroad, you can apply to take part in one of our international Summer Programmes. These are cultural programmes lasting between two and six weeks, which take place at our partner universities in South Korea and China. For further information about our study and work abroad options, visit: www.bangor.ac.uk/international/ exchanges/outgoing

EMPLOYABILITY In today’s highly competitive employment market, it is important to take advantage of the academic, recreational and work-related activities available to you as a student. Bangor Business School encourages the development of skills outside the classroom in order to fully prepare students for life after graduation.

Careers and Employability Fair

IBM Universities Challenge

Bangor Business School runs a Careers and Employability Fair during semester one. The Fair provides an excellent opportunity to meet recruiters, learn more about internships, graduate schemes and career vacancies, and gain an insight into what employers are looking for. A drop-in CV clinic offers invaluable advice into how to strengthen your CV.

In recent years, Bangor Business School students have experienced great success in the IBM Universities Business Challenge, a prestigious and highly competitive event in which undergraduates from universities throughout the UK participate in a series of realistic, simulated business scenarios. The IBM Challenge also offers a valuable opportunity for students to network with recruiters.

Careers and Employability Service Whether or not you know which career path you want to follow, the Careers and Employability Service supports students and recent graduates to make appropriate choices about their futures, by providing high-quality information, workshops, individual advice and guidance, as well as offering work-based opportunities such as a student employment bureau, work placements and work shadowing.

Bangor Business Society Working closely with the staff, the student-led Bangor Business Society aims to facilitate learning experiences for students from all years to build on what they learn in the classroom. The Society also arranges visits to graduate fairs, which are an invaluable opportunity to meet with prospective employers.

Undergraduate Internship Scheme Bangor University’s Undergraduate Internship Scheme provides opportunities to help enhance the employability of its students. All undergraduate students are eligible to apply for these internships, which are paid placements in various departments within the university. Past placements have included Event Co-ordinating, Social Media Development, Campaign Promotion, Web Development and a Consultation Project.

“In an increasingly competitive graduate job market, it’s never too early for students to begin considering their career options. Attending university is now about more than lectures and essays: it’s also about preparing for the world of employment, and networking, work experience and a strong CV are all key tools for any student seeking a successful career.” DR SIWAN MITCHELMORE SENIOR LECTURER IN BUSINESS AND MANAGEMENT BANGOR BUSINESS SCHOOL EMPLOYABILITY OFFICER 18 Bangor Business School

In addition, you must demonstrate an English language level of at least IELTS 6.0 or equivalent. By passing the foundation course, you will automatically satisfy this requirement.

Mature Students

The International Education Centre also offers scholarships worth between £2,000 and £5,000 per year.

We welcome applications from mature students and greatly value the contribution they have to make to the University. We aim to offer as much assistance and support as possible, and appreciate that mature students’ needs are different to those of students coming straight from school.

For further details about all scholarship schemes, see: www.bangor.ac.uk/business/ study-with-us/undergraduate-funding

Each application is considered on its merit. An access qualification or evidence of recent study to a standard equivalent to A-level are welcome. We realise that mature students may not have followed the traditional academic routes, and we are therefore flexible in our academic entry requirements.
