You might ask yourself ‘What makes Bangor so different from other UK universities?’ and the answer is really quite simple.
Over 130 years of excellence…… Why study at Bangor?
There are numerous ranking systems used in the UK to assess the quality of Universities and it can often be confusing for students when deciding on a University. However, in Bangor’s case it could not be simpler; we are ranked in the top 2% of the World’s universities. This reflects not just the high quality of teaching and research but also student satisfaction ratings, standard of facilities on offer and the considerable investment which we make in supporting each and every student.
Bangor University is also ranked in the Top 10 for Student Satisfaction (National Student Survey, 2015) which brings us amongst other highly reputed universities like Oxford and Cambridge for this year.
World leading research
Bangor University’s research has a major impact around the world according to a national assessment of research quality (REF). The 2014 Research Excellence Framework recognised that more than three-quarters of Bangor’s research is either world-leading or internationally excellent. Based on the University submission of 14 Units of Assessment, 77% of the research was rated in the top two tiers of research quality, ahead of the average for all UK universities.

International Experience Year
The ‘International Experience Year’ is an extra year which you spend studying or working abroad and you can apply to take it between your first and second, second and third or even after your final year. Because you still study in Bangor for three years as an undergraduate (or one year if you’re applying for
postgraduate), the year abroad doesn’t interfere with your degree in Bangor. It means there is more flexibility on where you can go and you have more freedom on what to do: study or work. We encourage you to explore your home subject area whilst abroad, but you might be a biology student here in Bangor and when you get to Australia you could take History or Psychology, for example. You could also think about working abroad for a year. Finding a work placement would be your responsibility and we would offer you advice on how to do so.
The idea of the ‘International Experience Year’ is to give you the opportunity to have a meaningful international experience – it’s the living and experiencing of a different life abroad that we want you to focus on. It is, of course, an academic experience too, so any credits you earn abroad will get added to your Bangor credits. We think the International Experience Year is a great opportunity and to support you we won’t charge you any tuition fees for that year abroad. We will also add ‘with International Experience’ to your degree title so that future employers will clearly see that you are a globally-aware and globallyexperienced student.

The best thing about being a student at Bangor is the atmosphere. It can’t be described how wonderful it is, it truly is beyond words. It is something you just feel and can sense around you when you are here. I have never found a place quite like it other than in my home in India. The cost of living in Bangor is lower than in some parts of the UK. Bangor has been described as “one of the cheapest places in Britain” to be a student. (The A-Z of Universities and Higher Education Colleges). As a guide we would recommend that students allow up to £9,000 for undergraduate study and £11,000 for postgraduate study to cover accommodation, food and other personal expenses per year. The figure is a guide and will vary depending on the individual needs and lifestyle of each student.
Working Part-time
Usual jobs for students include helping out in shops and at events and basic office assistance. International students can work up to 20 hours per week and full-time during the holidays. You will need to make sure you have enough time to complete all your course work and reading to ensure success in your studies. The University’s JobZone offers a free service to help you find part-time employment. The UK currently (from 1 October 2015) has a minimum wage of £6.70 per hour if you are aged 21 years and over and £5.30 per hour if you are aged 18-20. The national living wage for those aged 25 years and older will be £7.20.

I chose to study here because my degree is unique to Bangor University and therefore could only be taught to me here in Bangor. There is nowhere else in the UK that teaches Islamic Banking and Finance. However I was also aware that the department ranks very highly in the league tables – the business school here is viewed as one of the best within the UK and as a result has an excellent reputation. Both of these factors encouraged me to go for this course. Bistoun Rasoul Iraq Islamic Banking and Finance (Postgraduate)

PhD/Research Courses PhD/MPhil Subject areas
Being a research focused university of international reputation, our academic departments offer research opportunities in more than 25 academic disciplines. To find a suitable research topic or course, please refer to our page: www.bangor.ac.uk/international/ applying/research
Eligibility
1. Academic – Entry onto our PhD/MPhil courses normally requires a postgraduate/Masters degree 2.English Language – To be eligible for our PhD/MPhil programmes, international students must satisfy English Language Requirements.
Course options
A. PhD Programmes To obtain a PhD you are expected to conduct independent research that will make an original contribution to knowledge about that particular subject and present this in the form of a thesis. At Bangor University you have two routes available; route 1 and route 2 (see opposite) B. MPhil Programmes An MPhil will usually take 2 years to complete on a full-time programme. Research at MPhil level should represent an extension of existing knowledge, although the demands of originality are less than that for a PhD.
C. MRes programmes The Research Master’s degree is more research-orientated than a normal taught Masters programme, usually consisting of 120 credits research and 60 credits taught (66%/34%). It is seen to be a good route into PhD level study. Eligibility criteria and application procedures are the same as for the general taught Master’s degree programmes.
Route 1:
The PhD Programme of Study (3 years and 1 year writing-up) If you satisfy the English language requirements for the PhD program and have already drafted your research proposal, then the programme will normally be of 3 years in duration. Candidates will undertake the research during the three years and submit the final dissertation at the end of the fourth year – which is designated for writing-up.
Applying for Phd/MPhil programmes
1. Select an appropriate research topic. Refer to: www.bangor.ac.uk/ international/applying/research, for more details 2. Prepare a research proposal
she would consider supervising your project. If the academic expresses his/her interest, you may then further discuss your ideas and develop a full PhD/MPhil research proposal. 4. Scan the following supporting documents: Bachelor degree certificate and transcript Master’s degree certificate and transcript English language test certificate (if undertaken) Academic reference/support letter Confirmation of funding/sponsorship (if applicable) Passport 5. Submit the online application with the supporting documents listed above using the following link: www.bangor.ac.uk/ onlineapplicationform
Route 2:
Four years – Combined English Language and PhD program If you DO NOT satisfy the English Language requirement for PhD programs AND/OR you need guidance for drafting your research proposal, then the 4-year combined English and PhD program will suit you.
3. Find a member of staff whose research interests broadly match your own. Contact them directly with a research proposal and ask whether he/

The programme will normally be 4 years in duration and will be in two parts:
The purpose of your proposal is to show that you have a relevant theme, a viable project and the competence to carry it out. The information is vital when we evaluate your proposed study and decide if we have the right staff expertise to supervise you.
Combined English Language and PhD Programme of Study
Part 1: Year 1/The Preparatory Year. This will include English language tuition, academic study skills, regular meetings with the PhD supervisor and integration with other research students at the Academic School. During Part 1, you will research and write a full PhD research proposal based on the topic selected on the application form. Part 2: 3 year PhD Programme plus 1-year writing-up. The final dissertation is submitted at the end of the 1-year writing-up period. Progression from Part 1 to Part 2 will be conditional on having: Completed a fully developed research proposal that meets the Academic School’s requirement for entry onto a research degree. Achieved the required English language level required for entry onto a research degree. The duration of Part 1 will depend on the English language test score on entry, the English level required to progress onto the research degree/Part 2 and the completion of a satisfactory research proposal. The minimum score required is 4.0/4.5. As a guideline, students require 1 full year to increase by 2 IELTS bands e.g. from 4.5 to 6.5.
The format and length of the proposal is likely to vary according to the type of project. Typically a proposal is no less than 1500 words (3-4 pages) long and will cover the following points. Provisional title (max 50 words) The title should indicate the central focus of the research and should contain the key words associated with proposed work.

Professors at Bangor are so helpful and open to any questions I have. There is not a time that I haven’t had a question or needed help on an assignment that my professors haven’t given their undivided attention until I felt confident in finishing the assignment. All of my professors have been in the career field as well, from published poets, to journalists and screenwriters, I get to learn from people who not only are skilled in their subject, but are professionals in it as well.
