WHY STUDY LAW AT BANGOR? Qualifying Law Degrees Every Bangor LLB Law Degree is a Qualifying Law Degree and is recognised by the Law Society and Bar Council of England and Wales, and also by the Law Society of Ireland and the Bar in Canada. The Bar Council of India recognises the three year LLB Law Degree (M100) for professional purposes. Candidates can enter this degree after they have completed a first undergraduate degree in India.

The Bangor Senior Status Two Year Accelerated LLB is open to applicants possessing either a prior University degree (any discipline) or significant career experience. This accelerated LLB is also recognised by the Bar in other countries, e.g. the Nigeria Bar and the Canadian Bar provided applicants already hold a prior degree (any discipline).

“The lecturers really do go above and beyond when it comes to helping students. I had a fantastic mentor who helped me secure several mini-pupillages with Chambers in Liverpool, Manchester and London. To any prospective law student considering coming to Bangor – just do it – you won’t regret it” AARON CLEGG LLB LAW, MANAGING DIRECTOR, HONEYBURST MARKETING AND LEGAL RECRUITMENT CONSULTANT AT FOURTHLINE IN MANCHESTER 6 Bangor Law School

WHY CHOOSE BANGOR LAW SCHOOL • You will study at a multi-disciplinary school that employs specialists in a broad range of legal subjects including Commercial Law, Company Law, European Law, Criminal Law, Intellectual Property, International Law and Constitutional and Administrative Law. • The Law School’s state-of-the-art Moot Court was officially opened by the Lord Chief Justice of England and Wales, Lord Thomas of Cwmgiedd, in 2014, which further underpins Bangor’s position as a leading UK University Law School that places employability and student skills development at the core of its curriculum. • Class sizes in Bangor are smaller than most UK Law Schools as we place the student learning experience at the heart of your study experience. • You can choose to combine your study of Law with a range of subjects by means of our “Law with…” degree courses including Criminology, Social Policy, Accounting and Finance, Business Studies, History, Media Studies, Chinese, Philosophy or a range of European languages. • Each student is allocated a Personal Tutor who will monitor your academic progress and offer help and support on academic and non-academic matters. • Law School Lecturers have reached the UK final of the Oxford University Press Law Lecturer of the Year in three successive occasions in recent years.

• Our double degree LLB English Law and French Law was awarded the Robertson-Horsington award for Excellence in Transnational Legal Education by the Franco-British Lawyers Society. • A programme of distinguished guest lectures delivered by experts focuses on topical legal issues of the moment. • In the first year students wishing to do so, have the flexibility to take optional modules in a range of other subjects. • Students may participate in legal advice clinics and mooting competitions, offering real life experience of lawyers’ work. • Bangor Law School has a leading employability programme and offers students the opportunity to work in a range of legal and non-legal employers for short work experience internships. • Our International Experience Year programme allows students to add an extra year onto their degree and spend that additional year studying or working abroad. Students who successfully complete an International Experience Year have ‘with International Experience’ added to their degree title. • Welsh students may undertake tutorials and workshops in Welsh in all Law modules where these are offered as part of the curriculum. You can also opt for an LLB in Law with Welsh, and undertake a few modules taught entirely through the medium of Welsh. • Top 30 UK Law School (Guardian Rankings 2019)

LAW DEGREE COURSE STRUCTURE

HOW WILL I BE TAUGHT?

Each degree scheme is valued at 120 credits per year. 60 credits are normally taken in Semester 1 (September December) and a further 60 credits in Semester 2 (January - June). Each Semester contains around 11 weeks when lectures and classes take place. These are followed by a short period for revision, and then examinations at the end of each semester (apart from first year when exams only take place at the end of the academic year).

Teaching is by a mix of lectures, seminars and workshops. Your typical weekly class contact time will add up to around 15-20 hours per week. Students are also expected to spend some time in private study, undertake library-based research and background reading, and preparing for assignments and exams. Every student benefits from individual attention through smaller class sizes and the personal tutor scheme.

All our LLB degrees will involve the study of the Foundation Subjects of Legal Knowledge which will ensure their recognition status as Qualifying Law Degrees by the Bar and Law Society:

Support

• Law of the European Union

Bangor Law School provides weekly or fortnightly workshops in every core module studied in addition to weekly lectures. Workshops provide students with additional support and attention and the best opportunity to achieve the highest degree classification possible.

MODULES FOR ALL 3 & 4 YEAR LLB DEGREE SCHEMES The following information applies to all of our LLB degrees (except the 4 year LLB in English Law and French Law and the 2 Year Senior Status Accelerated LLB Degree Scheme. Please refer to our website for details of these programmes). On all of our other 3 year and 4 year LLB programmes, students will take the following compulsory modules in academic Years 1 and 2, and 3:

YEAR 1

YEAR 2

YEAR 3

Introduction to Law

Criminal Law

Company Law

Contract Law

Torts

Land Law

Public Law

European Union Law

2 options in Law or other discipline

2 options in Law or other discipline

2 options in Law or other discipline

Optional Modules If you are taking Law with another discipline, e.g. Criminology/History/Media Studies (see full list of Law with another discipline degrees on page 9), you will take the equivalent of 40 credits (typically two modules) in that other discipline every year, alongside your 80 credits of Law modules each year. For example, an LLB Law with Business Studies student will take 80 credits of Law modules each year and 40 credits of Business modules each year. They will graduate with a LLB Law with Business Studies Degree. If you choose to study the straight Law LLB degree (M100), then alongside your compulsory Law modules each year (see above), you will also choose Law optional modules so that all of your

annual 120 credits are studied purely in Law subjects. However, if you would like to taste another discipline in Year 1, you can choose to study 40 credits (typically equivalent to two modules) from any other Academic School in the University (subject to timetabling). Then in Years 2 and 3, you can drop the other discipline and continue to study Law modules only and graduate with a LLB Law Degree. OR, you can continue with the other discipline (provided it falls within the disciplinary area of one of our Law with Another Discipline degrees see full list on page 9), and graduate with an LLB Law with….degree, e.g. Law with Business.

Bangor Law School 9

ASSESSMENT Most modules are assessed separately by means of course work and end of module examination. In Year 1, course work will account for 25% and examinations for 75% of the final mark, whilst in Years 2 and 3, course work will normally account for 33% and examinations for 67% of the final mark. The pass mark in all assessments is 40%. Second year and final year grades will both contribute to the final degree classification. At the end of Year 3, your final degree classification depends on a weighted average of your Year 2 average mark (onethird weighting) and your Year 3 average mark (two-thirds weighting).

HOW WILL MY FINAL DEGREE CLASSIFICATION BE DETERMINED? Your final degree classification is determined by your overall mark, as follows:

*the third year of this four-year LLB degree is spent studying in the relevant country. **LLB English Law and French Law: This degree is a double degree programme. Unlike the 4 year LLB Law with French which requires students to spend year 3 in Toulouse, and upon return to Bangor in year 4 and completion of that year they graduate with a UK LLB Law with French, the LLB English Law and French Law is a double degree. This means that candidates graduate with two degrees: a UK LLB in English Law and French Law awarded by Bangor University, and a French Masters 1 Degree awarded by University of Toulouse Capitole 1. Students interested in applying for this degree must be highly fluent in French and English. Candidates are selected for entry onto this degree scheme by University of Toulouse Capitole 1 in France. Admitted applicants spend Years 1 and 2 in Toulouse, followed by years 3 and 4 in Bangor. Students only progress to Bangor if their Year 1 and 2 grades are deemed satisfactory by Toulouse. The LLB awarded by Bangor is a Qualifying Law Degree and entry is competitive. For further information, contact the Admissions Tutor at the Law School who can direct you to the Admissions Office in Toulouse.

YOUR FUTURE CAREER Bangor University Law School and Bangor Students’ Law Society work hand in hand to provide a dynamic learning environment that accelerates students development and prepares them for life after graduation, be it in the legal profession, further study or in non-legal careers. For further information about these and other activities at the School, go to: www.bangor.ac.uk/law/development

Careers and Employability Service In today’s highly competitive employment market, it is important to take advantage of the academic, recreational and work-related activities available to you as a student. Whether or not you know what career path you want to follow, the Careers and Employability Service supports students and recent graduates to make appropriate choices about their futures, by providing high quality information, workshops, individual advice and guidance, as well as offering work-based opportunities such as a student employment bureau, work placements and work shadowing. www.bangor.ac.uk/ careers

Work Placements Through our continuous work in developing contacts with legal practitioners across the UK, Bangor Law School is able to offer students an impressive programme of work placements and marshalling schemes (e.g. shadowing a judge). Placements enable students to make informed decisions about what to do after graduation, be it to continue with their legal studies, pursue research in a particular field, or choose a career path that is right for them.

Law Careers Fair The Law School’s Annual Law Careers Fair takes place in November of each year and enables students to meet with prospective employers. It is an excellent networking opportunity, which is attended by a wide variety of exhibitors who are able to offer work placements in both traditional and non-legal careers.

Bangor Students’ Law Society The award-winning Bangor Students’ Law society is actively involved in organising a wide variety of activities and events for Law students, creating a more social atmosphere in which to study law. Regular ‘legal’ activities help students develop skills and fill the gaps between what is learnt in lectures, and what is needed to succeed in a highly competitive industry. Bangor’s Partnership With Barristers’ Chambers Bangor Law School has a well-established partnership with Linenhall Chambers in Chester, one of the UK’s most respected Barristers’ Chambers.

Mooting Every year, Bangor Students’ Law Society runs the McLaren Moot Court Competition, named in honour of Magistrate and retired Bangor Law School lecturer, Ann McLaren. The contest is an opportunity for students to simulate court proceedings and to apply their knowledge in a practical, hands-on environment, with the final taking place in Caernarfon Crown Court. A state-of-the-art Moot Court facility was officially opened at Bangor University by the Lord Chief Justice of England and Wales, Lord Thomas of Cwmgiedd, in 2014, which further underpins Bangor’s position as a leading UK University Law School that places employability and student skills development at the core of its LLB Law Degree curriculum.

Street Law Street Law is a community-based, student-run project that aims to improve legal understanding amongst local people. The venture, which was originally established by two Bangor University Law School students, aims to distribute useful legal knowledge to people in the local communities who would not normally have easy access to information about legal issues and information that might affect them. The project sees Bangor Law students delivering interactive presentations on topics including Criminal Law, Consumer Law and Employment Law, free of charge, to organisations such as Youth Clubs and secondary schools

As part of the relationship, Bangor Law School students get to experience the sharp end of legal practice by shadowing barristers through a scheme of week long internships, or ‘mini-pupillages’. Mini-pupillages are an impressive addition to any Law student’s CV. They are particularly important to aspiring barristers, as they are seen as a key part of getting to know about a career at the Bar.

Undergraduate Internship Scheme Bangor University’s Undergraduate Internship Scheme provides opportunities to help enhance the employability of its students. All undergraduate students are eligible to apply for these internships, which are paid placements in various departments within the university.

Bangor Employability Award The Bangor Employability Award (BEA) is designed to enhance the immediate and longer-term career prospects of our students. BEA graduates get a certificate, a transcript and formal verification of their extracurricular activities from Bangor University. The Award also offers free training courses, interview preparation, access to online careers software and helps develop a skills portfolio of evidence for employers. Find out more about how the BEA can help: www.bangor.ac.uk/employability

STUDY OR WORK ABROAD Studying or working abroad as part of your degree is the opportunity of a lifetime. By spending time in another country, you will experience new cultures, make new friends, gain a global perspective on your subject and learn a new language. Best of all, you will enhance your employability by developing new skills and becoming more motivated, confident and independent. You do not have to be studying a language to undertake one of these exchanges, and Bangor University offers two options to law students, which range from summer programmes to a year abroad.

International Experience Year

Summer Programmes

This is our most popular programme, where students add an extra year onto their degree and spend that additional year studying or working abroad. You will not be charged any additional tuition fees by Bangor University and you will not be asked to pay tuition fees abroad either. Students who successfully complete an International Experience Year have ‘with International Experience’ added to their degree title.

If you would like to spend only a short time abroad, you can apply to take part in one of our international Summer Programmes. These are cultural programmes lasting between two and six weeks, which take place at our partner universities in South Korea and China.
